Previous studies of endurance exercise training in older men and women generally have found only minimal skeletal muscle adaptations to training. To evaluate the possibility that this may have been due to an inadequate training stimulus, we studied 23 healthy older (64 +/- 3 yr) men and women before and after they had trained by walking/jogging at 80% of maximal heart rate for 45 min/day 4 days/wk for 9-12 mo. This training program resulted in a 23% increase in maximal O2 consumption. Needle biopsy samples of the lateral gastrocnemius muscle were obtained before and after training and analyzed for selected histochemical and enzymatic characteristics. The percentage of type I muscle fibers did not change with training. The percentage of type IIb fibers, however, decreased from 19.1 +/- 9.1 to 15.1 +/- 8.1% (P less than 0.001), whereas the percentage of type IIa fibers increased from 22.1 +/- 7.7 to 29.6 +/- 9.1% (P less than 0.05). Training also induced increases in the cross-sectional area of both type I (12%; P less than 0.001) and type IIa fibers (10%; P less than 0.05). Capillary density increased from 257 +/- 43 capillaries/mm2 before training to 310 +/- 48 capillaries/mm2 after training (P less than 0.001) because of increases in the capillary-to-fiber ratio and in the number of capillaries in contact with each fiber. Lactate dehydrogenase activity decreased by 21% (P less than 0.001), whereas the activities of the mitochondrial enzymes succinate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase, and beta-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase increased by 24-55% in response to training (P less than 0.001-0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study examined the effects of dietary manipulation upon the respiratory exchange ratio (R = VCO2/VO2) as a predictor of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). Seven healthy males performed fixed term maximal incremental treadmill exercise after an overnight fast on three separate occasions. The first test took place after the subjects had consumed their normal mixed diet (45 +/- 5% carbohydrate (CHO] for a period of three days. This test protocol was then repeated after three days of a low CHO diet (3 +/- 2% CHO), and again after three days of a high CHO diet (61 +/- 5% CHO). Respiratory gases were continuously monitored during each test using an on-line system. No significant changes in mean exercise oxygen uptake (VO2), VO2max or maximum functional heart rate (FHRmax) were found between tests. Mean exercise carbon dioxide output (VCO2) and R were significantly lower than normal after the low CHO diet (both p less than 0.001) and significantly higher than normal after the high CHO diet (both p less than 0.05). In the transition from rest to steady-state exercise, O2 uptake from the lungs (VO2) depends on the product of pulmonary blood flow and pulmonary arteriovenous O2 content difference. The kinetics of pulmonary blood flow are believed to be somewhat faster than changes in pulmonary arteriovenous O2 content difference. We hypothesized that during CO breathing, the kinetics of CO uptake (VCO) and diffusing capacity for CO (DLCO) should be faster than VO2 because changes in pulmonary arteriovenous CO content difference should be relatively small. Six subjects went abruptly from rest to constant exercise (inspired CO fraction = 0.0005) at 40, 60, and 80% of their peak VO2, measured with an incremental test (VO2peak). At all exercise levels, DLCO and VCO rose faster than VO2 (P less than 0.001), and DLCO rose faster than VCO (P less than 0.001). For example, at 40% VO2peak, the time constant (tau) for DLCO in phase 2 was 19 +/- 5 (SD), 24 +/- 5 s for VCO, and 33 +/- 5 s for VO2. Both VCO and DLCO increased with exercise intensity but to a lesser degree than VO2 at all exercise intensities (P less than 0.001). In addition, no significant rise in DLCO was observed between 60 and 80% VO2peak. We conclude that the kinetics of VCO and DLCO are faster than VO2, suggesting that VCO and DLCO kinetics reflect, to a greater extent, changes in pulmonary blood flow and thus recruitment of alveolar-capillary surface area. The effect of dynamic exercise on the NADH content of human type I (slow-twitch) and II (fast-twitch) muscle fibres was investigated. Muscle biopsy samples were obtained from the quadriceps femoris of seven healthy subjects at rest and after bicycle exercise at 40, 75 and 100% of the maximal oxygen uptake [VO2(max.)]. At rest and after exercise at 100% VO2(max.), muscle NADH content was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) in type I than in type II fibres. After exercise at 40% VO2(max.), muscle NADH decreased in type I fibres (P less than 0.01), but was not significantly changed in type II fibres. After exercise at 75 and 100% VO2(max.), muscle NADH increased above the value at rest in both type I and II fibres (P less than 0.05). Muscle lactate was unchanged at 40% VO2(max.), but increased 20- and 60-fold after exercise at 75 and 100% VO2(max.) respectively. The finding that NADH decreased only in type I fibres at 40% VO2(max.) supports the idea that type I is the fibre type predominantly recruited during low-intensity exercise. The increase of NADH in both fibre types after exercise at 75% and 100% VO2(max.) suggests that the availability of oxygen relative to the demand is decreased in both fibre types at high exercise intensities.  相似文献

A short-term training program involving 2 h of daily exercise at 59% of peak O2 uptake (VO2max) repeated for 10-12 consecutive days was employed to determine the significance of adaptations in energy metabolic potential on alterations in energy metabolism and substrate utilization in working muscle. The initial VO2max determined before training on the eight male subjects was 53.0 +/- 2.0 (SE) ml.kg-1.min-1. Analysis of samples obtained by needle biopsy from the vastus lateralis muscle before exercise (0 min) and at 15, 60, and 99 min of exercise indicated that on the average training resulted (P less than 0.05) in a 6.5% higher concentration of creatine phosphate, a 9.9% lower concentration of creatine, and a 39% lower concentration of lactate. Training had no effect on ATP concentration. These adaptations were also accompanied by a reduction in the utilization in glycogen such that by the end of exercise glycogen concentration was 47.1% higher in the trained muscle. Analysis of the maximal activities of representative enzymes of different metabolic pathways and segments indicated no change in potential in the citric acid cycle (succinate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase), beta-oxidation (3-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase), glucose phosphorylation (hexokinase), or potential for glycogenolysis (phosphorylase) and glycolysis (pyruvate kinase, phosphofructokinase, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase). Humoral factors play an important role in the control of exercise hyperpnea. The role of neuromechanical ventilatory factors, however, is still being investigated. We tested the hypothesis that the afferents of the thoracopulmonary system, and consequently of the neuromechanical ventilatory loop, have an influence on the kinetics of oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide output (VCO2), and ventilation (VE) during moderate intensity exercise. We did this by comparing the ventilatory time constants (tau) of exercise with and without an inspiratory load. Fourteen healthy, trained men (age 22.6 +/- 3.2 yr) performed a continuous incremental cycle exercise test to determine maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max = 55.2 +/- 5.8 ml x min(-1) x kg(-1)). On another day, after unloaded warm-up they performed randomized constant-load tests at 40% of their VO2max for 8 min, one with and the other without an inspiratory threshold load of 15 cmH2O. Ventilatory variables were obtained breath by breath. Phase 2 ventilatory kinetics (VO2, VCO2, and VE) could be described in all cases by a monoexponential function. The bootstrap method revealed small coefficients of variation for the model parameters, indicating an accurate determination for all parameters. Paired Student's t-tests showed that the addition of the inspiratory resistance significantly increased the tau during phase 2 of VO2 (43.1 +/- 8.6 vs. 60.9 +/- 14.1 s; P < 0.001), VCO2 (60.3 +/- 17.6 vs. 84.5 +/- 18.1 s; P < 0.001) and VE (59.4 +/- 16.1 vs. 85.9 +/- 17.1 s; P < 0.001). The average rise in tau was 41.3% for VO2, 40.1% for VCO2, and 44.6% for VE. The tau changes indicated that neuromechanical ventilatory factors play a role in the ventilatory response to moderate exercise.  相似文献

This study determined maximal O2 uptake (VO2max), maximal O2 deficit, and O2 debt in the Thoroughbred racehorse exercising on an inclined treadmill. In eight horses the O2 uptake (VO2) vs. speed relationship was linear until 10 m/s and VO2max values ranged from 131 to 153 ml.kg-1.min-1. Six of these horses then exercised at 120% of their VO2max until exhaustion. VO2, CO2 production (VCO2), and plasma lactate (La) were measured before and during exercise and through 60 min of recovery. Muscle biopsies were collected before and at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, and 60 min after exercise. Muscle concentrations of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), phosphocreatine (PC), La, glucose 6-phosphate (G-6-P), and creatine were determined, and pH was measured. The O2 deficit was 128 +/- 32 (SD) ml/kg (64 +/- 13 liters). The O2 debt was 324 +/- 62 ml/kg (159 +/- 37 liters), approximately two to three times comparative values for human beings. Muscle [ATP] was unchanged, but [PC] was lower (P less than 0.01) than preexercise values at less than or equal to 10 min of recovery. [PC] and VO2 were negatively correlated during both the fast and slow phases of VO2 during recovery. Muscle [La] and [G-6-P] were elevated for 10 min postexercise. Stroke volume (SV) increases above the resting level during exercise and then declines at higher intensities of exercise in sedentary subjects. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an attenuation of the decline in SV at higher exercise intensities contributes to the increase in maximal cardiac output (Qmax) that occurs in response to endurance training. We studied six men and six women, 25 +/- 1 (SE) yr old, before and after 12 wk of endurance training (3 days/wk running for 40 min, 3 days/wk interval training). Cardiac output was measured at rest and during exercise at 50 and 100% of maximal O2 uptake (Vo2max) by the C2H2-rebreathing method. VO2max was increased by 19% (from 2.7 +/- 0.2 to 3.2 +/- 0.3 l/min, P less than 0.001) in response to the training program. Qmax was increased by 12% (from 18.1 +/- 1 to 20.2 +/- 1 l/min, P less than 0.01), SV at maximal exercise was increased by 16% (from 97 +/- 6 to 113 +/- 8 ml/beat, P less than 0.001) and maximal heart rate was decreased by 3% (from 185 +/- 2 to 180 +/- 2 beats/min, P less than 0.01) after training. The calculated arteriovenous O2 content difference at maximal exercise was increased by 7% (14.4 +/- 0.4 to 15.4 +/- 0.4 ml O2/100 ml blood) after training. Before training, SV at VO2max was 9% lower than during exercise at 50% VO2max (P less than 0.05). In contrast, after training, the decline in SV between 50 and 100% VO2max was only 2% (P = NS). Furthermore, SV was significantly higher (P less than 0.01) at 50% VO2max after training than it was before. Left ventricular hypertrophy was evident, as determined by two-dimensional echocardiography at the completion of training. The results indicate that in young healthy subjects the training-induced increase in Qmax is due in part to attenuation of the decrease in SV as exercise intensity is increased.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the lactate threshold (Tlac) during incremental exercise could be increased significantly during the first 3 wk of endurance training without any concomitant change in the ventilatory threshold (Tvent). Tvent is defined as O2 uptake (VO2) at which ventilatory equivalent for O2 [expired ventilation per VO2 (VE/VO2)] increased without a simultaneous increase in the ventilatory equivalent for CO2 (VE/VCO2). Weekly measurements of ventilatory gas exchange and blood lactate responses during incremental and steady-rate exercise were performed on six subjects (4 male; 2 female) who exercised 6 days/wk, 30 min/session at 70-80% of pretraining VO2max for 3 wk. Pretraining Tlac and Tvent were not significantly different. After 3 wk of training, significant increases (P less than 0.05) occurred for mean (+/- SE) VO2max (392 +/- 103 ml/min) and Tlac (482 +/- 135 ml/min). Tvent did not change during the 3 wk of training, despite significant (P less than 0.05) reductions in VE responses to both incremental and steady-rate exercise. Thus ventilatory adaptations to exercise during the first 3 wk of exercise training were not accompanied by a detectable alteration in the ventilatory "threshold" during a 1-min incremental exercise protocol. The mean absolute difference between pairs of Tlac and Tvent posttraining was 499 ml/min. Despite the significant training-induced dissociation between Tlac and Tvent a high correlation between the two parameters was obtained posttraining (r = 0.86, P less than 0.05). Chronic heart failure (CHF) may impair lung gas diffusion, an effect that contributes to exercise limitation. We investigated whether diffusion improvement is a mechanism whereby physical training increases aerobic efficiency in CHF. Patients with CHF (n = 16) were trained (40 min of stationary cycling, 4 times/wk) for 8 wk; similar sedentary patients (n = 15) were used as controls. Training increased lung diffusion (DlCO, +25%), alveolar-capillary conductance (DM, +15%), pulmonary capillary blood volume (VC, +10%), peak exercise O2 uptake (peak VO2, +13%), and VO2 at anaerobic threshold (AT, +20%) and decreased the slope of exercise ventilation to CO2 output (VE/VCO2, -14%). It also improved the flow-mediated brachial artery dilation (BAD, from 4.8 +/- 0.4 to 8.2 +/- 0.4%). These changes were significant compared with baseline and controls. Hemodynamics were obtained in the last 10 patients in each group. Training did not affect hemodynamics at rest and enhanced the increase of cardiac output (+226 vs. +187%) and stroke volume (+59 vs. +49%) and the decrease of pulmonary arteriolar resistance (-28 vs. -13%) at peak exercise. Hemodynamics were unchanged in controls after 8 wk. Increases in DlCO and DM correlated with increases in peak VO2 (r = 0.58, P = 0.019 and r = 0.51, P = 0.04, respectively) and in BAD (r = 0.57, P < 0.021 and r = 0.50, P = 0.04, respectively). After detraining (8 wk), DlCO, DM, VC, peak VO2, VO2 at AT, VE/VCO2 slope, cardiac output, stroke volume, pulmonary arteriolar resistance at peak exercise, and BAD reverted to levels similar to baseline and to levels similar to controls. Results document, for the first time, that training improves DlCO in CHF, and this effect may contribute to enhancement of exercise performance.  相似文献

Extreme endurance training and fiber type adaptation in rat diaphragm   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Extreme endurance training was used to investigate the adaptability of the rat diaphragm muscle fibers. During the final phase of the 14-wk training program, the animals were running for 240 min/day at an estimated requirement of 80% of pretraining maximal O2 consumption. Analysis of a sample of the costal diaphragm indicated that training resulted in a 34% reduction (P less than 0.05) in the percent distribution of type IIa fibers [27.7 +/- 1.1 vs. 18.3 +/- 2.6 (SE)] and a 15% increase (P less than 0.05) in the percent of type IIb fibers (40.0 +/- 1.2 vs. 46.1 +/- 2.4). No change (P greater than 0.05) was found in the distribution of the type I fibers (32.3 +/- 1.2 vs. 35.7 +/- 1.3). Oxidative potential as assessed with NADH-tetrazolium reductase and measured microphotometrically increased (P less than 0.05) by 19% in type I fibers but did not change in either the type IIa or type IIb fibers. No effect of training was found when a different oxidative marker, succinic dehydrogenase, was employed. Similarly glycolytic potential based on the activity of alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase was not affected by training. Glycogen concentration was elevated by 60% (P less than 0.01) in type I fibers and 77% (P less than 0.01) in type IIb fibers with training but was not altered (P greater than 0.05) in type IIa fibers. To evaluate the effect of endurance training on ventilatory function in older individuals, 1) 14 master athletes (MA) [age 63 +/- 2 yr (mean +/- SD); maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) 52.1 +/- 7.9 ml . kg-1 . min-1] were compared with 14 healthy male sedentary controls (CON) (age 63 +/- 3 yr; VO2max of 27.6 +/- 3.4 ml . kg-1 . min-1), and 2) 11 sedentary healthy men and women, age 63 +/- 2 yr, were reevaluated after 12 mo of endurance training that increased their VO2max 25%. MA had a significantly lower ventilatory response to submaximal exercise at the same O2 uptake (VE/VO2) and greater maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximal exercise ventilation (VEmax), and ratio of VEmax to MVV than CON. Except for MVV, all of these parameters improved significantly in the previously sedentary subjects in response to training. Hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR) at rest and the ventilatory equivalent for CO2 (VE/VCO2) during submaximal exercise were similar for MA and CON and unaffected by training. We conclude that the increase in VE/VO2 during submaximal exercise observed with aging can be reversed by endurance training, and that after training, previously sedentary older individuals breathe at the same percentage of MVV during maximal exercise as highly trained athletes of similar age.  相似文献

To assess the effects of endurance training on plasma glucose kinetics during moderate-intensity exercise in men, seven men were studied before and after 12 wk of strenuous exercise training (3 days/wk running, 3 days/wk cycling). After priming of the glucose and bicarbonate pools, [U-13C] glucose was infused continuously during 2 h of cycle ergometer exercise at 60% of pretraining peak O2 uptake (VO2) to determine glucose turnover and oxidation. Training increased cycle ergometer peak VO2 by 23% and decreased the respiratory exchange ratio during the final 30 min of exercise from 0.89 +/- 0.01 to 0.85 +/- 0.01 (SE) (P less than 0.001). Plasma glucose turnover during exercise decreased from 44.6 +/- 3.5 mumol.kg fat-free mass (FFM)-1.min-1 before training to 31.5 +/- 4.3 after training (P less than 0.001), whereas plasma glucose clearance (i.e., rate of disappearance/plasma glucose concentration) fell from 9.5 +/- 0.6 to 6.4 +/- 0.8 ml.kg FFM-1.min-1 (P less than 0.001). Oxidation of plasma-derived glucose, which accounted for approximately 90% of plasma glucose disappearance in both the untrained and trained states, decreased from 41.1 +/- 3.4 mumol.kg FFM-1.min-1 before training to 27.7 +/- 4.8 after training (P less than 0.001). This decrease could account for roughly one-half of the total reduction in the amount of carbohydrate utilized during the final 30 min of exercise in the trained compared with the untrained state.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of intense interval training on erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) levels at rest and after maximal exercise. Eight normal men, mean +/- SE = 24.2 +/- 4.3 years, trained 4 days X week-1 for a period of 8 weeks. Each training session consisted of eight maximal 30-s rides on a cycle ergometer, with 4 min active rest between rides . Prior to and after training the subjects performed a maximal 45-s ride on an isokinetic cycle ergometer at 90 rev X min-1 and a graded leg exercise test ( GLET ) to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. Blood samples were obtained from an antecubital vein before, during and after the GLET only. Training elicited significant increases in the amount of work done during the 45-s ride (P less than 0.05), and also in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max: Pre = 4.01 +/- 0.13; Post = 4.29 +/- 0.07 1 X min-1; P less than 0.05) during exercise and total recovery VO2 (Pre = 19.14 +/- 0.09; Post = 21.45 +/- 0.10 1 X 30 min-1; P less than 0.05) after the GLET . The purpose of this study was to determine whether a program of regular sprint exercise training alters the functional properties or protects against the development of fatigue in fast- and slow-twitch rat skeletal muscle. The training program consisted of 6 sprints of 4.5-min duration at 40 m/min and 15% slope with 2.5-min rest intervals, performed 5 days/wk for 6 wk. The exercise program significantly increased (P less than 0.05) citrate synthase activity (mumol X g-1 X min-1) in the predominantly type I soleus (SOL) from 28 +/- 2 to 44 +/- 2; the type IIb superficial region of the vastus lateralis (SVL) from 10 +/- 1 to 16 +/- 1; and the type IIa deep region of the vastus lateralis (DVL) from 34 +/- 2 to 53 +/- 2. Phosphofructokinase activity (mumol X g-1 X min-1) also increased with training in the SOL (17 +/- 1 vs. 23 +/- 1) and the DVL (64 +/- 5 vs. 79 +/- 5). Sprint training reduced (P less than 0.05) the contraction time (CT) (111 +/- 7 vs. 92 +/- 3 ms) and the one-half relaxation time (118 +/- 3 vs. 104 +/- 2 ms) in the slow-twitch soleus. The exercise program also induced a decreased CT in the fast-twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL), but significance was limited to the P less than 0.1 level. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of continuous and interval training on changes in lactate and ventilatory thresholds during incremental exercise. Seventeen males were assigned to one of three training groups: group 1:55 min continuous exercise at approximately 50% maximum O2 consumption (VO2max); group 2: 35 min continuous exercise at approximately 70% VO2max; and group 3: 10 X 2-min intervals at approximately 105% VO2max interspersed with rest intervals of 2 min. All of the subjects were tested and trained on a cycle ergometer 3 day/wk for 8 wk. Lactate threshold (LT) and ventilatory threshold (VT) (in addition to maximal exercise measures) were determined using a standard incremental exercise test before and after 4 and 8 wk of training. VO2max increased significantly in all groups with no statistically significant differences between the groups. Increases (+/- SE) in LT (ml O2 X min-1) for group 1 (569 +/- 158), group 2 (584 +/- 125), and group 3 (533 +/- 88) were significant (P less than 0.05) and of the same magnitude. VT also increased significantly (P less than 0.05) in each group. However, the increase in VT (ml O2 X min-1) for group 3 (699 +/- 85) was significantly greater (P less than 0.05) than the increases in VT for group 1 (224 +/- 52) and group 2 (404 +/- 85). For group 1, the posttraining increase in LT was significantly greater than the increase in VT (P less than 0.05). The influence of work intensity and duration on the white blood cell (WBC), lymphocyte (L) and platelet (P) count response to exercise was studied in 16 trained subjects (22 +/- 5.4 years, means +/- SD). They performed three cyclo-ergospirometric protocols: A) 10 min at 150 W followed by a progressive test (30 W/3 min) till exhaustion; B) constant maximal work (VO2max); C) a 45 min Square-Wave Endurance Exercise Test (SWEET), (n = 5). Arterial blood samples were taken: at rest, submaximal and maximal exercise in A; maximal exercise in B; 15th, 30th and 45th min in the SWEET. Lactate, [H+], PaCO2, PaO2, [Hct], Hb, cortisol, ACTH, total platelet volume (TPV), total blood red cell (RBC), WBC, L and P were measured. At 150 W, WBC, L, P, and TPV increased. VO2max did not differ between A and B, but a difference was found in total exercise time (A = 25 +/- 3 min; B = 7 +/- 2 min, p less than 0.001). In A, at VO2max, the increase was very small for Hct, [Hb], and RBC (10%), in contrast with large changes for WBC (+93%), L (+137%), P (+32%), TPV (+35%), [H+] (+39%), lactate (+715%), and ACTH (+95%). At VO2max there were no differences in these variables between A and B. During the SWEET: WBC, L, P, TPV and ACTH increased at the 15th min as much as in VO2max, but no difference was observed between the 15th, 30th and 45th min, except for ACTH which continued to rise; the lactate increase during the SWEET was about half (+341%) the value observed at VO2max, and [H+] did not vary with respect to values at rest.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Forty-eight sedentary and 39 quite active or well-trained men participated in this study. Muscle biopsy samples were taken from the vastus lateralis for the determination of fiber type composition (I, IIa, IIb), fiber type area, and assay of the following enzymes: malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 3-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (HADH) and oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (OGDH). Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was determined with a progressive cycle ergometer test, while endurance performance or maximal aerobic capacity (MAC) was defined as the total work output during a 90-min cycle ergometer test. Correlation analysis revealed no evidence of association between fiber type composition and VO2max kg-1 or MAC kg-1 in sedentary subjects, while active men exhibited significant correlation between % type I (r = 0.52), % type IIb (r = 0.31) and VO2max kg-1. Enzyme activities were not significantly correlated with MAC kg-1 and VO2max kg-1 in sedentary men while active men exhibited significant correlation for the three enzymes (0.37 less than or equal to r less than or equal to 0.51) with VO2max kg-1. These results show that the contribution of muscle fiber type and enzyme activities to aerobic performance may be inflated from a statistical point of view by the training status heterogeneity of subjects. They also suggest that variation in these muscle characteristics does not account for the individual differences in aerobic performance of subjects who have never trained before. Therefore, the assessment of muscle characteristics is not as useful as originally thought for the detection of individuals with a high potential for endurance performance among untrained subjects.  相似文献

To compare the results obtained by incremental or constant work load exercises in the evaluation of endurance conditioning, a 20-week training programme was performed by 9 healthy human subjects on the bicycle ergometer for 1 h a day, 4 days a week, at 70-80% VO2max. Before and at the end of the training programme, (1) the blood lactate response to a progressive incremental exercise (18 W increments every 2nd min until exhaustion) was used to determine the aerobic and anaerobic thresholds (AeT and AnT respectively). On a different day, (2) blood lactate concentrations were measured during two sessions of constant work load exercises of 20 min duration corresponding to the relative intensities of AeT (1st session) and AnT (2nd session) levels obtained before training. A muscle biopsy was obtained from vastus lateralis at the end of these sessions to determine muscle lactate. AeT and AnT, when expressed as % VO2max, increased with training by 17% (p less than 0.01) and 9% (p less than 0.05) respectively. Constant workload exercise performed at AeT intensity was linked before training (60% VO2max) to a blood lactate steady state (4.8 +/- 1.4 mmol.l-1) whereas, after training, AeT intensity (73% VO2max) led to a blood lactate accumulation of up to 6.6 +/- 1.7 mmol.l-1 without significant modification of muscle lactate (7.6 +/- 3.1 and 8.2 +/- 2.8 mmol.kg-1 wet weight respectively). Eight healthy volunteers performed gradational tests to exhaustion on a mechanically braked cycle ergometer, with and without the addition of an inspiratory resistive load. Mean slopes for linear ventilatory responses during loaded and unloaded exercise [change in minute ventilation per change in CO2 output (delta VE/delta VCO2)] measured below the anaerobic threshold were 24.1 +/- 1.3 (SE) = l/l of CO2 and 26.2 +/- 1.0 l/l of CO2, respectively (P greater than 0.10). During loaded exercise, decrements in VE, tidal volume, respiratory frequency, arterial O2 saturation, and increases in end-tidal CO2 tension were observed only when work loads exceeded 65% of the unloaded maximum. There was a significant correlation between the resting ventilatory response to hypercapnia delta VE/delta PCO2 and the ventilatory response to VCO2 during exercise (delta VE/delta VCO2; r = 0.88; P less than 0.05). The maximal inspiratory pressure generated during loading correlated with CO2 sensitivity at rest (r = 0.91; P less than 0.05) and with exercise ventilation (delta VE/delta VCO2; r = 0.83; P less than 0.05). Although resistive loading did not alter O2 uptake (VO2) or heart rate (HR) as a function of work load, maximal VO2, HR, and exercise tolerance were decreased to 90% of control values. We conclude that a modest inspiratory resistive load reduces maximum exercise capacity and that CO2 responsiveness may play a role in the control of breathing during exercise when airway resistance is artificially increased.  相似文献
