The cortical activation was estimated by the event-related potential (ERPs) methods during selection tasks of lateralized visual stimuli requiring different forms of attention: 1) form of stimuli, 2) stimuli position, 3) combined attention of form and position. The ERPs were recorded in 15 young healthy adults in 6 leads P3, P4, T3, T4, T5, T6, and endogenous ERPs components: CNV (contingent negative variation), N1, P3 and the complex [N1-P3]. Differences between the ERPs at "attended" and "non-attended" stimuli were considered as indices of selection attention of particular feature of visual stimuli. Such indices of form and position were revealed selectivity in parietal leads. The most eminent ERPs components, the pronounced activation gradient during increase of attention demands were revealed in parietal regions (vs. temporal ones). In our opinion, parietal cortex has a high priority in selection attention system. 相似文献

Long-term facilitation (LTF) is a prolonged increase in ventilatory motor output after episodic peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation. We have previously shown that LTF is activated during sleep following repetitive hypoxia in snorers (Babcock MA and Badr MS. Sleep 21: 709-716, 1998). The purpose of this study was 1) to ascertain the relative contribution of inspiratory flow limitation to the development of LTF and 2) to determine the effect of eliminating inspiratory flow limitation by nasal CPAP on LTF. We studied 25 normal subjects during stable non-rapid eye movement sleep. We induced 10 episodes of brief repetitive isocapnic hypoxia (inspired O(2) fraction = 8%; 3 min) followed by 5 min of room air. Measurements were obtained during control and at 20 min of recovery (R(20)). During the episodic hypoxia study, inspiratory minute ventilation (Vi) increased from 6.7 +/- 1.9 l/min during the control period to 8.2 +/- 2.7 l/min at R(20) (122% of control; P < 0.05). Linear regression analysis confirmed that inspiratory flow limitation during control was the only independent determinant of the presence of LTF (P = 0.005). Six subjects were restudied by using nasal continuous positive airway pressure to ascertain the effect of eliminating inspiratory flow limitation on LTF. Vi during the recovery period was 97 +/- 10% (P > 0.05). In conclusion, 1) repetitive hypoxia in sleeping humans is followed by increased Vi in the recovery period, indicative of development of LTF; 2) inspiratory flow limitation is the only independent determinant of posthypoxic LTF in sleeping human; 3) elimination of inspiratory flow limitation abolished the ventilatory manifestations of LTF; and 4) we propose that increased Vi in the recovery period was a result of preferential recruitment of upper airway dilators by repetitive hypoxia. 相似文献

To establish a valid animal model of the effects of olfactory stimuli on anxiety, a series of experiments was conducted using rats in an open-field test. Throughout, effects of lavender oil were compared with the effects of chlordiazepoxide (CDP), as a reference anxiolytic with well-known effects on open-field behaviour. Rats were exposed to lavender oil (0.1-1.0 ml) for 30 min (Experiment 1) or 1h (Experiment 2) prior to open-field test and in the open field or injected with CDP (10 mg/kg i.p.). CDP had predicted effects on behaviour, and the higher doses of lavender oil had some effects on behaviour similar to those of CDP. In Experiment 3, various combinations of pre-exposure times and amounts of lavender oil were used. With sufficient exposure time and quantity of lavender the same effects were obtained as in Experiment 2. Experiment 4 demonstrated that these behavioural effects of lavender could be obtained following pre-exposure, even if no oil was present in the open-field test. In Experiments 2-4, lavender oil increased immobility. Together, these experiments suggest that lavender oil does have anxiolytic effects in the open field, but that a sedative effect can also occur at the highest doses. 相似文献

AimThe inhalation of Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) essential oil has anxiolytic-like effects in animal models and humans, but its mechanism of action is still not fully understood. The inhalation of essential oils can induce anxiolytic effects through the central nervous system (e.g., lung absorption and bloodstream transport) or stimulation of the olfactory system and secondary activation of brain regions. Thus, the main objective of the present study was to evaluate whether the perception of lavender essential oil aroma, when inhaled, is necessary to obtain its anxiolytic-like effects in mice tested in the marble-burying test.Main methodsAnosmia was induced by irrigating the nasal cavity with zinc gluconate + zinc acetate so that the mice could not detect odors in the olfactory discrimination test. The marble-burying test was used to evaluate the anxiolytic-like effects of inhaled lavender essential oil.Key findingsAnosmia did not interfere with the anxiolytic-like effect of lavender essential oil inhalation in the marble-burying test at concentrations of 2.5% (number of marbles buried: vehicle, 4.7 ± 1.0; zinc, 6.2 ± 2.2; p > 0.10) and 5% (number of marbles buried: vehicle, 3.4 ± 0.8; zinc, 4.3 ± 0.9; p > 0.10). Lavender essential oil at a concentration of 0.5% was ineffective.SignificanceThese results suggest that olfactory system activation is unlikely to participate in the anxiolytic-like effect of lavender essential oil inhalation. 相似文献

Results from studies of nitrogenous exchange in a man during long exposure to the hyperbaric conditions (4.1, 4.6, 5.1 MPa, that corresponds to 400, 450 and 500 m) have shown that catabolism of proteins in man under conditions of high pressure of gas and aquatic environments is intensified due to the primarily intensive muscular work. A feeding study was performed to monitor the effect of chitosan intake on the fecal microbiota of ten healthy human subjects.
Diversity of microflora was monitored during 8 weeks including 4 weeks of chitosan supplementations. Using denaturing gradient
gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of 16S rRNA gene amplicons and quantitative PCR method we revealed possible changes originating
in the overall bacterial composition and also in the subpopulation of Bifidobacterium group. DGGE profiles displayed high complexity and individuality for each subject. Considerable variations in the composition
of band patterns were observed among different persons. A raised level of fecal Bacteroides in response to chitosan intake was found in all samples. Bifidobacterium levels following chitosan intake increased or remain unchanged. Non-significant increase was, surprisingly, found in the

The use of stimulants (methylphenidate and amphetamine) as cognitive enhancers by the general public is increasing and is controversial. It is still unclear how they work or why they improve performance in some individuals but impair it in others. To test the hypothesis that stimulants enhance signal to noise ratio of neuronal activity and thereby reduce cerebral activity by increasing efficiency, we measured the effects of methylphenidate on brain glucose utilization in healthy adults. We measured brain glucose metabolism (using Positron Emission Tomography and 2-deoxy-2[18F]fluoro-D-glucose) in 23 healthy adults who were tested at baseline and while performing an accuracy-controlled cognitive task (numerical calculations) given with and without methylphenidate (20 mg, oral). Sixteen subjects underwent a fourth scan with methylphenidate but without cognitive stimulation. Compared to placebo methylphenidate significantly reduced the amount of glucose utilized by the brain when performing the cognitive task but methylphenidate did not affect brain metabolism when given without cognitive stimulation. Whole brain metabolism when the cognitive task was given with placebo increased 21% whereas with methylphenidate it increased 11% (50% less). This reflected both a decrease in magnitude of activation and in the regions activated by the task. Methylphenidate's reduction of the metabolic increases in regions from the default network (implicated in mind-wandering) was associated with improvement in performance only in subjects who activated these regions when the cognitive task was given with placebo. These results corroborate prior findings that stimulant medications reduced the magnitude of regional activation to a task and in addition document a "focusing" of the activation. This effect may be beneficial when neuronal resources are diverted (i.e., mind-wandering) or impaired (i.e., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), but it could be detrimental when brain activity is already optimally focused. This would explain why methylphenidate has beneficial effects in some individuals and contexts and detrimental effects in others. 相似文献

The composition of the main constituents of the essential oil of two different chemotypes of Mentha suaveolens has been investigated during development. In the first chemotype (6) a definite increase of 1,2-epoxymen-thylacetate was observed, but piperitone oxide was always the main constituent. In the second chemotype (12) an increase of neo- and dihydrocarveol and their corresponding acetates was observed and dihydrocarvone was the main constituent. The results have been used to formulate a new biosynthetic scheme for the cyclic oxygenated monoterpenes found in essential oils of the genus Mentha. 相似文献

During wakefulness, increases in the partial pressure of arterial CO(2) result in marked rises in cortical blood flow. However, during stage III-IV, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and despite a relative state of hypercapnia, cortical blood flow is reduced compared with wakefulness. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that, in normal subjects, hypercapnic cerebral vascular reactivity is decreased during stage III-IV NREM sleep compared with wakefulness. A 2-MHz pulsed Doppler ultrasound system was used to measure the left middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAV; cm/s) in 12 healthy individuals while awake and during stage III-IV NREM sleep. The end-tidal Pco(2) (Pet(CO(2))) was elevated during the awake and sleep states by regulating the inspired CO(2) load. The cerebral vascular reactivity to CO(2) was calculated from the relationship between Pet(CO(2)) and MCAV by using linear regression. From wakefulness to sleep, the Pet(CO(2)) increased by 3.4 Torr (P < 0.001) and the MCAV fell by 11.7% (P < 0.001). A marked decrease in cerebral vascular reactivity was noted in all subjects, with an average fall of 70.1% (P = 0.001). This decrease in hypercapnic cerebral vascular reactivity may, at least in part, explain the stage III-IV NREM sleep-related reduction in cortical blood flow. 相似文献

The asymmetry was revealed in right hemisphere in all kinds of attention forms. The level (amplitude) of right-side asymmetry was depended on the level of attention: The significant relation between the right-side asymmetry and subjects' reaction time was also revealed. It is proposed that such an asymmetry is the evidence of better spatial differentiation of visual stimuli in right hemisphere in humans. 相似文献

Movement-related potentials (MRPs) recorded from the brain are thought to vary during learning of a motor task. However, since MRPs are recorded at a very low signal-to-noise ratio, it is difficult to measure these variations. In this study we attempt to remove most of the accompanying noise thus enabling the tracking of transient phenomena in MRPs recorded during learning of a motor task. Subjects performed a simple motor task which required learning. A modified version of the matching pursuit algorithm was used in order to remove a significant portion of the electroencephalographic noise overlapping the MRPs recorded in the experiment. Small groups of MRPs were then averaged according to experimental parameters. Our results show that the power of the MRPs does not decay uniformly during learning. Instead, there is a significant peak in their power after 4 or 5 repetitions of the task. This peak is noticeable especially in electrodes placed over the prefrontal region of the cortex at times subsequent to the actual movement. The observed pattern of activity may indicate problem solving related to comprehension of the force against which the user performed the task. The origin of rhythmic synchronization or entrainment to a musical beat in animals has been widely discussed. Parrots are suitable animals to exami ne the relati on ship betwee n the capability of vocal learning and spontaneous rhythmic synchronization. In this study, budgerigars Melopsittacus undulatus learned to tap (peck) 2 keys alternately at a self-paced rate. Then, the metronomic sounds were played in the background during test sessions while the birds were performing the key pecking task, although they were not required to synchronize tap timing with the metronome. We found modest but significant effects of the metronome rhythms on the tap timing in some subjects. We also tested humans Homo sapiens using almost the same method. In contrast to the birds, a number of huma n subjects synchr on ized tap timing to the on set of the metronome without verbal or documented instructions. However, we failed to find an effect of the metronome on self-paced tap timing in some human subjects, although they were capable of rhythmic synchronization. This is the first report describing the effects of metronomic sounds on self-paced tapping in nonhuman vocal learners. This study introduces a new method that can be used in future research comparing birds that differ in vocal learning capacities, social structure, age, sex, hormonal status, and so on as part of exami nations of the evolutionary foun dati ons of beat processing. 相似文献

Spatial visual attention modulates the first negative-going deflection in the human averaged event-related potential (ERP) in response to visual target and non-target stimuli (the N1 complex). Here we demonstrate a decomposition of N1 into functionally independent subcomponents with functionally distinct relations to task and stimulus conditions. ERPs were collected from 20 subjects in response to visual target and non-target stimuli presented at five attended and non-attended screen locations. Independent component analysis, a new method for blind source separation, was trained simultaneously on 500 ms grand average responses from all 25 stimulus-attention conditions and decomposed the non-target N1 complexes into five spatially fixed, temporally independent and physiologically plausible components. Activity of an early, laterally symmetrical component pair (N1aR and N1aL) was evoked by the left and right visual field stimuli, respectively. Component N1aR peaked ca. 9 ms earlier than N1aL. Central stimuli evoked both components with the same peak latency difference, producing a bilateral scalp distribution. The amplitudes of these components were no reliably augmented by spatial attention. Stimuli in the right visual field evoked activity in a spatio-temporally overlapping bilateral component (N1b) that peaked at ca. 180 ms and was strongly enhanced by attention. Stimuli presented at unattended locations evoked a fourth component (P2a) peaking near 240 ms. A fifth component (P3f) was evoked only by targets presented in either visual field. The distinct response patterns of these components across the array of stimulus and attention conditions suggest that they reflect activity in functionally independent brain systems involved in processing attended and unattended visuospatial events. 相似文献

Dynamics of the EEG activity — during the performance of a mental task — was investigated by the nonstationary power spectrum method. The performance of the mental arithmetic is associated with suppression of the alpha wave. The suppression of the alpha wave is not as marked as the alpha blocking accompanying opening of the eyes. Alpha wave suppression during the mental task was nonsymmetric around the center frequency of the alpha wave, and lower frequency components were suppressed more than high frequency components. An explanation of these observations is proposed in terms of decrease in the periods of alpha prevalence during performance of mental tasks. 相似文献
