Summary Thirteen species of antarctic asteroids were collected in McMurdo Sound during the austral spring and summer of 1984–1985 and 1985–1986. Variability in the energetic composition of the body wall, pyloric cecum, and gonad was directly related to differences in levels of protein, carbohydrate, lipid and ash in these tissue types. Reproductive output was generally similar between males and females when expressed in gravimetric units. When considered in energy units, females generally had greater reproductive output than males. Reproductive output values of antarctic asteroids were similar to published values for temperate, tropical, and subpolar species. In a given year, the majority of antarctic asteroids have the greatest energy resources in the body wall, a tissue representing a long-term energy investment. Lesser amounts of energy are devoted to annual nutrient storage (pyloric ceca) and reproduction (gonads).  相似文献

Abstract. The oral surface and mouth of juvenile asteroids and echinoids with indirect development forms on the lower left side of the larval body, thus establishing a new axis of body symmetry. In contrast, the juvenile mouth of ophiuroids and holothuroids develops from the larval one, and the larval and adult body axes roughly coincide. Explaining how two such disparate modes of development arose in evolution has been a perennial problem for echinoderm biologists, but recent observations on larval budding in asteroids may provide an answer. The juvenile mouth of asteroids forms near the base of the left posterolateral lobe. The posterolateral lobes are also the principal site of bud formation in asteroid larvae that propagate asexually, and buds form mouths. By accelerating the development of oral and ectodermal structures belonging to the bud, and combining these with internal organs derived from the parent larva, a composite individual could be constructed with the same orientation and positioning as the juvenile rudiment in asteroids. Whether this also explains the position of the juvenile rudiment in echinoids is a more complex question, depending in part on whether asexual propagation is derived, and restricted to asteroids and ophiuroids, or is more primitive and hence widespread among stem echinoderms.  相似文献

The mitochondrial genetic code is much more varied than the standard genetic code. The invertebrate mitochondrial code, for instance, comprises six initiation codons, including five alternative start codons. However, only two initiation codons are known in the echinoderm and flatworm mitochondrial code, the canonical ATG and alternative GTG. Here, we analyzed 23 Asteroidea mitogenomes, including ten newly sequenced species and unambiguously identified at least two other start codons, ATT and ATC, both of which also initiate translation of mitochondrial genes in other invertebrates. These findings underscore the diversity of the genetic code and expand upon the suite of initiation codons among echinoderms to avoid erroneous annotations. Our analyses have also uncovered the remarkable conservation of gene order among asteroids, echinoids, and holothuroids, with only an interchange between two gene positions in asteroids over ∼500 Ma of echinoderm evolution.  相似文献

Evolution of the echinoderm Hox gene cluster   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY Extant echinoderms are members of an ancient and highly derived deuterostome phylum. The composition and arrangement of their Hox gene clusters are consequently of interest not only from the perspective of evolution of development, but also in terms of metazoan phylogeny and body plan evolution. Over the last decade numerous workers have reported partial Hox gene sequences from a variety of echinoderms. In this paper we used a combined methods approach to analyze phylogenetic relationships between 68 echinoderm Hox homeodomain fragments, from species of five extant classes—two asteroids, one crinoid, one ophiuroid, one holothuroid, and three echinoids. This analysis strengthens Mito and Endo's (2000) proposition that the ancestral echinoderm's Hox gene cluster contained at least eleven genes, including at least four posterior paralogous group genes. However, representatives of all paralogous groups are not known from all echinoderm classes. In particular, these data suggest that echinoids may have lost a posterior group Hox gene subsequent to the divergence of the echinoderm classes. Evolution of the highly derived echinoderm body plan may have been accompanied by class-specific duplication, diversification and loss of Hox genes.  相似文献

Activities and characteristics of digestive enzymes of polar and subtropical echinoderms are similar. Specific adaptations to facilitate digestion at low temperature were not observed. Levels of chymotrypsin and β-glucosidase of digestive tissues of the Antarctic asteroids Odontaster validus and Odontaster meridionalis, and the Antarctic echinoid Sterechinus neumayeri, are comparable to levels of the asteroids Henricia downii and Astropecten articulatus from the Gulf of Mexico. α-Glucosidase activities are similar for S. neumayeri and A. articulatus. The pH of maximal activity is 7.5 for disaccharidases and 8.5–9.5 for chymotrypsin for both polar and subtropical species. Affinities for substrates were higher at 25°C than at 0°C for disaccharidases of all species. However, Km values for chymotrypsin increased from 0 to 25°C. Lack of sufficient adaptation by polar echinoderms to facilitate digestion at low temperature may reduce their capacity to digest food. Received: 24 July 1996 / Accepted: 31 January 1997  相似文献

Abstract

Fifty-eight species of echinoderms (excluding holothurians) are newly recorded from the southern Norfolk Ridge and the Three Kings Rise to the north of New Zealand. Two species of Asteroidea, in the genera Ceramaster and Pseudoceramaster, ceramaster are described as new. A total of 115 species of echinoderms, not counting the holothurians, are now known from this area. They include 14 crinoids, 35 asteroids, 41 ophiuroids, and 25 echinoids.  相似文献

Echinaster (Echinaster) sepositus is one of the most abundant sea stars in western Mediterranean rocky bottoms, yet its reproductive biology remains virtually unknown. Here we report the ultrastructure of its gametogenesis over 2 consecutive years. It is a gonochoric species with an annual reproductive cycle spawning gametes in late summer and early autumn. Each arm of every individual contained two gonads (dark red in females and yellow in males). In both sexes, the gonad was a single, large sac composed of several smaller sacs. The gonad wall consisted of two multilayered sacs, outer and inner, separated by the genital haemal sinus. The histology of the gonad wall was consistent with that found in other asteroids. Oogenesis was continuous during the year, but eggs were spawned only in late summer. Oocytes were in close relationship with follicular cells that are suggested to transfer nutrients to the oocytes. Spermatogenesis was restricted to 5–6 months in spring-summer. It occurred in columns with an axial interstitial cell supporting each column, and producing processes towards the lumen that remained connected to spermatogenic cells by intercellular junctions. Developing sperm cells were found along the length of the column, while spermatozoa were found free in the testis lumen. Spermatogenesis followed the pattern described for echinoderms, to give rise to an acrosome-bearing, round-shaped spermatozoon. The histology and cytology of the reproductive process in E. sepositus followed the general pattern found for asteroids.  相似文献

Summary Aqueous extracts of the mantle tissues of the opisthobranchs Austrodoris kerguelensis and Tritoniella belli and the lamellarid gastropod Marseniopsis mollis were cytotoxic to the sperm of the antarctic sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri, and caused behavioral responses (sustained terminal sensory tube-feet retractions) in five species of antarctic sea stars. Pieces of mantle tissue of all three species were noxious to two species of antarctic fish. Primary body components (mantle, foot, viscera) of the three gastropod species contained high levels (% dry wt) of NaOH-insoluble protein (40–59%), moderate levels of NaOH-soluble protein (7–25%) and lipid (6–18%), and low levels of carbohydrate (< 1%). The energetic composition of the tissues reflected their organic make-up, with most energy (11–17 kJg–1 dry wt) associated with protein. Total energy contents of representative adult individuals were 192,26 and 69 kJ for A. kerguelensis (93 g wet wt), T. belli (22 g wet wt) and M. mollis (114 g wet wt), respectively. Although these sluggish gastropods lack an external shell and are nutrient-and energy-rich and therefore high quality prey, like many of their temperate and tropical counterparts, they appear to be protected by chemicals.  相似文献

All adequately known post-Paleozoic asteroids are either assignable to surviving families or closely related families whereas no Paleozoic species assignable to a surviving order has been recognized. The Mississippian speciesCompsaster formosus is similar enough to various Recent taxa in overall form as well as in the form and arrangement of body wall ossicles to raise the issue of affinities: IsC. formosus nested within a phylogenetic branch hitherto known only from post-Paleozoic strata or is it only homeomorphic? The nature of the ambulacral system is critical to interpretation of echinoderms, and post-Paleozoic asteroids share three fundamental ambulacral characters or character suites: dorsal podial pores, staggered positioning of ambulacrals and adambulacrals, and complex articular structures between these two ossicular types.Calliasterella americana, a Carboniferous asteroid, shares the three ambulacral features, although it is distinctive from post-Paleozoic asteroids in other ways.Compsaster formosus exhibits at least two of the three ambulacral characters, although presence of staggering has not been finally established. LikeC. americana, C. formosus differs from post-Paleozoic species in details of ambulacral anatomy as well as aspects of ventral body surface ossicular arrangement. Although approaching crown-group organization,C. formosus nevertheless represents a branch basal to the crown group.Because asteroids are generalists, understanding of life habits ofCompsaster is sketchy in spite of morphological similarities between it and younger genera.Compsaster probably was epifaunal and its overall form is strongly reminiscent of that of Recent predatory asteriids but it is also similar to small-particle feeding echinasterids.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The biochemical and energetic compositions of the somatic body components of seven species of asteroids, one ophiuroid, and four echinoids from the northern Gulf of Mexico (30–95 m depth) were ascertained.
  • 2.2. Levels of ash were high (68.5–90.8% dry wt) in all body-wall tissues, with the exception of the asteroid Echinaster modestus (51.6% dry wt). Levels of ash were low in the pyloric cecae (nutrient storage organ) of asteroids (4.6–30.8% dry wt).
  • 3.3. Levels of lipid (8.1–34.5% dry wt), soluble protein (15.9–28.7% dry wt), and insoluble protein (18.1–48.6%, dry wt) were high in the pyloric cecae of all asteroids, but generally low in ophiuroid and echinoid body-wall tissues. High protein levels (28.5–44.5% dry wt) in the body-wall of the asteroids Echinaster modestus and Anthenoides pierceisuggest it may play a role in nutrient storage.
  • 4.4. All somatic tissues contained low levels of carbohydrate (0.2–1.4% dry wt).
  • 5.5. Levels of energy in pyloric cecal tissues (12.99–26.05 kJ/g dry wt) were 4–8 times higher than in echinoderm body-wall tissues (2.92–11.91 kJ/g dry wt).
  • 6.6. The biochemical and energetic compositions of echinoderms from the northern Gulf of Mexico are similar to those of species from other latitudes and depths.

Phylogeny of Holothuroidea (Echinodermata) inferred from morphology   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Holothuroids, or sea cucumbers, are an abundant and diverse group of echinoderms with over 1400 species occurring from the intertidal to the deepest oceanic trenches. In this study, we report the first phylogeny of this class, based on a cladistic analysis of 47 morphological characters. We introduce several previously unconsidered synapomorphic characters, examine the relationships between representatives from all extant families and assess the assumptions of monophyly for each order and subclass. Maximum-parsimony analyses using three rooting methods recovered well-supported and identical topologies when two small and apparently derived families, Eupyrgidae and Ge-phyrothuriidae, were removed. The results suggest that the higher-level arrangement of Holothuroidea warrants a considerable revision. Apodida was sister to the other holothuroids. The monophyly of Dendrochirotida was not supported and the group may be paraphyletic. A randomization test using Wills' gap excess ratio found significant congruence between the phylogeny and the stratigraphic record of fossil members, suggesting that the fossil record of holothuroids is not as incomplete as is often stated. The fossil-calibrated tree indicated that several groups of holothuroids survived the end-Permian mass extinction and that the clade composed of Dendrochirotida, Dactylochirotida, Aspidochirotida and Molpadiida rapidly radiated during the Triassic.  相似文献

New species of the obligately marine Thraustochytriaceae Sparrow were discovered in subantarctic and antarctic waters of the southeastern Indian Ocean, the southwestern Pacific Ocean, and the antarctic Ross Sea during two cruises of the research vessel USNS ELTANIN. The life cycles of four species of Thraustochytrium in seawater-pollen and/or seawater-brine shrimp larvae cultures are described. Thraustochytrium antarcticum sp. nov. develops sporangia that may proliferate from a single basal rudiment. Flagellated zoospores are liberated from the sporangium upon complete disintegration of the sporangial wall at maturity. Thraustochytrium rossii sp. nov. and T. kerguelensis sp. nov. are both similar in that they develop sporangia that may proliferate from more than one basal rudiment. The latter species releases flagellated zoospores upon complete disintegration of the sporangial wall, but the former species liberates a mass of individually immobile zoospores from the sporangium. These remain quiescent for several hours before they swim away one after another. The protoplast of Thraustochytrium amoeboidum sp. nov. leaves the sporangium through a pore as an amoeboid body which then gives rise to nonflagellated amoebospores by successive bipartitioning. Laterally biflagellate thraustochytrioid zoospores were also observed, but the way in which they are formed remains to be determined. Zoosporic and aplanosporic phycomycetes were recovered from water samples collected in the Subtropical, Subantarctic, and Antarctic Zones of the Southern Ocean. Highest numbers of phycomycete propagules were found in antarctic waters near the Antarctic Convergence during ELTANIN's Cruise 51. In the Subtropical and Subantarctic (but not in the Antarctic) Zones fungal population densities increased with proximity to continents or islands. At each station where phycomycetes were recovered, highest numbers of propagules were generally found in the surface layers (25–250 m) of the ocean below the photic zone (lower limit 30–60 m). This peculiar distribution may indicate that phycomycetes are engaged in decomposing substances derived from the photic zone.  相似文献

A total of 25 species of echinoderms (four asteroids, six ophiuroids, five echinoids and ten holothurians) were recorded at Marino Ballena National Park, using 25 m2 quadrants, parallel to the coast, at seven sites. The ophiuroids were the most abundant group with 581 individuals and the asteroids the less abundant (48 individuals). Echinoderms densities were low, with the exception of the ophiuroids. Diversity, density and the number of groups were higher where sedimentation was lower. We suggest that sedimentation is having a negative effect on the diversity of echinoderms and on the development of the coral reefs in this park.  相似文献

A search for antibacterial activity in different body parts of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, the common starfish Asterias rubens, and the sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa was conducted. Antibacterial activity was detected in extracts from several tissues in all species tested, but mainly in the coelomocyte and body wall extracts. Relatively high antibacterial activity could also be detected in gastrointestinal organs and eggs from A. rubens and in eggs from C. frondosa. Differences between active extracts regarding hydrophobicity and sensitivity to heat and proteinase K treatment indicated that several different compounds were responsible for the antibacterial activities detected. Lysozyme-like activity could be detected in several tissues from A. rubens. Haemolytic activity could be detected in all species tested, especially in the body wall extracts. Results from the current study suggest that marine echinoderms are a potential source for the discovery of novel antibiotics.  相似文献

Complete DNA sequences have been determined for the mitochondrial genomes of the crinoids Phanogenia gracilis (15892 bp) and Gymnocrinus richeri (15966 bp). The mitochondrial genetic map of the stalkless feather star P. gracilis is identical to that of the comatulid feather star Florometra serratissima (Scouras, A., Smith, M.J., 2001. Mol. Biol. Evol. 18, 61-73). The mitochondrial gene order of the stalked crinoid G. richeri differs from that of F. serratissima and P. gracilis by the transposition of the nad4L protein gene. The G. richeri nad4L mitochondrial map position is unique among metazoa and is likely a derived feature in this stalked crinoid. Nucleotide compositional analyses of protein genes encoded on the major sense strand confirm earlier conclusions regarding a crinoid-distinctive T over C bias. All three crinoids exhibit high T levels in third codon positions, whereas other echinoderm classes favor A or C in the third codon position. The nucleotide bias is reflected in the relative synonymous codon usage patterns of crinoids versus other echinoderms. We suggest that the nucleotide bias of crinoids, in comparison to other echinoderms, indicates that a physical inversion of the origin of replication has occurred in the crinoid lineage. Evolutionary rate tests support the use of the cytochrome b (cob) gene in molecular phylogenetic analyses of echinoderms. A consensus echinoderm tree was generated based on cytochrome b nucleotide alignments that placed the asteroids as a sister group to a clade containing the ophiuroids and the (echinoids+holothuroids) with the crinoids basal to the rest of the echinoderm classes: [Crinoid,(Asteroid,(Ophiuroid,(Echinoid,Holothuroid)))].  相似文献

The presence of sclerites in different mesodermal tissues was studied in thirteen species of Mediterranean echinoderms representing the five living classes. In the species of Asteroidea and Crinoidea examined, sclerites were present only in specific tissues. In the species of Ophiuroidea and, especially, Echinoidea and Holothuroidea examined, sclerites were present in almost every tissue, but with considerable variation among species and tissues. Data on sclerite shape, size, and relative abundance (measured as tissue abundance) are presented. The data support the possible functional role of sclerites as reinforcing structures, as well as their possible use as taxonomic characters. Finally, the need of more studies to elucidate the ontogenetic and phylogenetic implications of sclerites is discussed.  相似文献

The feeding deterrent effects of echinoderm body-wall tissues and ethanolic extracts containing mid-polarity compounds were evaluated utilizing generalist fish and crabs as model predators. The body-wall tissues of the echinoderms examined ranged 10-fold from 0.9–9.4 mm in thickness, and four and a half-fold in level of mineralization (17.8–82.7% ash content). Holothuroids had the thickest body-wall tissues and contained the lowest levels of mineralization in their body-walls. Crinoids and ophiuroids had high levels of mineralization in their arms. Asteroid body-wall tissues varied the most in thickness and ash content (0.9–3.9 mm in thickness and 29.2–55.5% in ash content). Body-wall tissues of 19 species of echinoderms were tested for their feeding deterrent properties against the marine fishes Lagodon rhomboides (Linnaeus) and Cyprinodon variegatus (Lacepede), as well as the decapod crustacean Libinia emarginata (Leach). Equivalent sized pieces of fresh body-wall tissue of 16 species of echinoderms caused observable feeding deterrence responses in at least two of the three model predators. There was no significant correlation between body-wall thickness or percent ash and its palatability to any of the three model predators. Agar pellets containing ethanolic body-wall extracts of 12 of 18 echinoderm species caused observable feeding deterrence responses in the fish L. rhomboides. In similar experiments with the arrow crab Stenorhyncus seticornis (Herbst), using carrageenan fish-meal blocks as food models, no differences in consumption of control fish-meal and experimental body-wall extract blocks were detected. Our findings indicate that invertebrate and vertebrate predators may respond quite differently to echinoderm body-wall extracts.  相似文献

The Keweenaw Peninsula in northern Michigan was once a major copper mining area and these mining activities were responsible for depositing tons of tailings in and around the Keweenaw Waterway. In recent years there has been concern about possible toxic effects of the contaminated sediments on aquatic communities in the system. In the fall of 1990, sediments were collected from various locations along the Waterway. Ten-day tests were conducted with the samples using three species of benthic invertebrates that have been proposed as suitable for evaluating the toxicity of freshwater sediments: Hyalella azteca (amphipods), Chironomus tentans (chironomids) and Lumbriculus variegatus(oligochaetes). A number of sediments were toxic to one or more of the three species and, in general, there was good agreement among the tests with regard to identifying toxic samples. Unexpectedly, the relative sensitivity of the three species to the test sediments was not accurately predicted from water-only copper exposures. This indicates that factors modifying exposure, such as different lifestyles and/or varying sensitivity to physico-chemical characteristics of sediments can influence results of sediment toxicity tests.  相似文献
