The complete list of prosobranch gastropods comprising 195 species classified in 97 genera and 38 families was compiled for Peter the Great Bay (northwest of the Sea of Japan) and the adjacent water areas. In general, in the bay low boreal species prevail, which supported its assignment to the Manchurian (North Japanese, Sea of Japan, Asian) Low Boreal Pacific Subregion of the Boreal Pacific Region. Shallow water thermotropic species mostly prevailed in the littoral and upper sublittoral (to a depth of 50 m) zones of the bay; psychrotropic species were found in the lower sublittoral and upper bathyal (50–500 m) zones; and bathyal thermotropic species inhabited the lower (more then 500 m) bathyal zone.  相似文献

A major turnover in planktonic foraminifera occurred across the Eocene/Oligocene (E/O) boundary. New drill holes through the E/O boundary in southern Tanzania contain extremely well-preserved and diverse assemblages of planktonic foraminifera. Here we document a 1.2 million year record of assemblages, diversity and stable isotope fluctuations through this critical interval, which is often dissolved and/or recrystallised in carbonate-rich facies. The E/O boundary is marked by the abrupt extinction of all five remaining species of the family Hantkeninidae and a distinct size reduction in the genus Pseudohastigerina. The boundary is preceded over a short stratigraphic interval by the extinction of Turborotalia cerroazulensis, Turborotalia cocoaensis and Turborotalia cunialensis. Quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages reveals significant changes in the abundance of certain species and the composition of the assemblages. We compare diversity fluctuations to the stable isotope record of Pseudohastigerina naguewichiensis and use multispecies stable isotope analyses to determine the life habitats of the most important species. A major shift in the evenness occurs at ~ 33.8 Ma associated with the extinction of the T cerroazulensis group suggesting acute ecological disturbance. We propose that the extinction of the T. cerroazulensis group at ~ 33.8 Ma was directly related to cooling of sea surface temperatures, while the extinction of Hantkeninidae was due to modifications in the thermal structure of the oceans and associated productivity changes. After the extinctions, renewed origination and diversification occurred, leading to a characteristic Oligocene planktonic foraminifer assemblage.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the lithostratigraphic features and ostracod associations of the Pliocene deposits located in the western sector of the Guadalquivir basin (SW Spain). A regressive cycle is defined by the vertical distribution of five main facies (FA-1 to FA-5), which were deposited in upper bathyal to fluvial palaeoenvironments. The broad palaeontological record is utilized to draw a general outline of the food chain in each palaeoenvironment. A comparison with the Pliocene ostracod distribution of southeastern Spain, southwestern France and Portugal permits to define a common ostracod biozonation for southwestern Europe during this period. Four main marine biozones are distinguished: (a): Pontocythere elongata biozone (infralittoral); (b): Costa edwardsii biozone (shallow circalittoral); (c): Bosquetina carinella biozone (deep circalittoral); and (d): Henryhowella asperrima biozone (upper bathyal). Freshwater, brackish and lower bathyal/abyssal species are very scarce in this area during this period.  相似文献

Major changes in ostracod assemblages have been recorded in the Lower Jurassic of Western Tethys related to biotic crises of the Pliensbachian-Toarcian boundary and the Polymorphum-Levisoni boundary (Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event). The study is focused on the ostracods assemblages from Benzerka section (Traras Mountains, Algeria) and their comparison with sections from External Subbetic and Algarve Basin (South Iberian Palaeomargin). Three stratigraphic intervals coincident with the ammonite zones have been differentiated with important fluctuations in the composition of ostracod assemblages. In the ostracod assemblages from the Traras Mountains the turnover related to this benthic biotic crisis is shown by assemblages previous to the biotic crisis (uppermost Pliensbachian) mainly composed by families Healdiidae and Cytherellidae to assemblages just after the T-OAE (upper part of the Levisoni Zone) with assemblages dominated by families Protocytheridae and Polycopidae and the extinction of family Healdiidae (suborder Metacopina). The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) probably resulted in restricted conditions but a barren interval due to oxygen-depleted conditions in this setting is not recorded. In this context, the change of components of ostracod assemblages looks gradual. In the Southiberian Palaeomargin, represented by the External Subbetic the turnover of ostracods assemblages is also recorded but the families involved are different than in Traras Mountains. Therefore, different phases have been differentiated in the ostracod turnover occurring from Upper Pliensbachian (assemblages dominated by families Pontocyprididae, Healdiidae and Bairdiidae) to end of Lower Toarcian (assemblages dominated by family Cytherellidae and the extinction of family Healdiidae). In the Algarve Basin the families Healdiidae and Bairdiidae were dominant previously to the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. Differences in the composition of ostracod assemblages between Traras Mountains and External Subbetic may be related to the fragmentation of these palaeomargins related to early stages of rifting in the Western Tethys. Moreover, the incidence of oxygen-depleted conditions was higher in External Subbetic than in Traras Mountains where some ostracod genera survive during the biotic crisis.  相似文献

The Pha Kan Formation that crops out at the Phra That Muang Kham section, south of Lampang city, was measured and sampled for ostracod analysis. We here report the occurrence of 29 species distributed among 14 genera. Four new species are described: Triassocypris phakanella Forel nov. sp., Leviella lampangensis Forel nov. sp., Bektasia yawella Forel nov. sp. and Hungarella poli Chitnarin nov. sp. The present data represent the first detailed report of Middle Triassic (Anisian) ostracods from the Sukhothai terrane and the first insight into diversity dynamics following the end-Permian extinction in this area. The ostracod assemblages of the Phra That Muang Kham section are discussed and document an important shift from siliciclastic to carbonate conditions, from a protected to an open marine environment, followed by a slight regressive trend up-section associated with repeated salinity fluctuations. This fauna illustrates the post-crisis recovery during the Middle Triassic and some hypothesis are issued on the distribution pathways of several taxa.  相似文献

Dickinsonia is an iconic fossil of the Ediacara biota (~575–539 Ma). It was previously known from siliciclastic successions of the White Sea assemblage in Australia, Baltica, and possibly India. Here we describe Dickinsonia sp. from the terminal Ediacaran Shibantan Member limestone (ca. 551–543 Ma) of the Dengying Formation in the Yangtze Gorges area of South China. The stratigraphic distribution of Ediacara-type fossils in the Shibantan Member indicates that this biota uniquely preserves both the White Sea and Nama assemblages in stratigraphic succession. The new data presented here suggests that Dickinsonia had wider paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental distributions, implying its strong dispersal capability and environmental tolerance.  相似文献

One hundred and seventy collected samples from Jebil section have been carefully studied for their ostracod content and referred to 41 species belonging to 20 genera. Their vertical distribution allowed to distinguish five successive associations of ostracod assemblages; two of which are correlated with the Early Lutetian, one with the Late Lutetian, another association with the Bartonian and the last one with the Priabonian. Community structure of the collected ostracod fauna has been studied; three indices have been calculated for each sample: Shannon (diversity), Margalef (richness) and Equitability indexes. In the lower and the middle part of the Formation, they indicate a stable environment supporting high diversity ostracod communities; whereas in the upper portion the environmental conditions were unstable characterized by low diversity. The results of a multivariate statistical method, using the cluster analysis and the Detrended Correspondence Analysis of the 41 ostracod species and the 170 samples, have led to conclude that the most effective environmental factor in the study area is the paleodepth and of less importance oxygenation and salinity. Thus, it allowed to distinguish four palaeoenvironmental intervals within the Cherahil Formation: the first one represented by taxa that are known from the shallower parts of the shelf; the second interval includes the majority of the encountered species of inner neritic shelf with normal salinity; the third one, corresponding to an outer neritic domain; and the last interval refers to a circalittoral environment, is comprised mainly of Cytherella angulata and of Soudanella laciniosa triangulata.  相似文献

The ostracod fauna collected from the Cherahil formation that crops out at the Jebel Serj section (central Tunisia) contains 24 species belonging to 12 genera. These ostracods are associated with 9 genera of benthic Foraminifera (including 4 Nummulites species) and 7 genera of planktonic Foraminifera. The biostratigraphic study of ostracod assemblages results to the recognition of 6 biozones which are correlated with Lutetian-Priabonian. The Shannon Weaver, Margalef and equitability indices point to internal platform netritic conditions, with minor fluctuations in depth and oxygenation. The palaeobiogeographic distribution of ostracod species found in the study area of Central of Tunisia establishes a good connexion with the basins developed in Northern Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Mauritania) and the Middle East (Egypt and Jordan).  相似文献

In the late Pliocene–middle Pleistocene a group of 95 species of elongate, cylindrical, deep-sea (lower bathyal–abyssal) benthic foraminifera became extinct. This Extinction Group (Ext. Gp), belonging to three families (all the Stilostomellidae and Pleurostomellidae, some of the Nodosariidae), was a major component (20–70%) of deep-sea foraminiferal assemblages in the middle Cenozoic and subsequently declined in abundance and species richness before finally disappearing almost completely during the mid-Pleistocene Climatic Transition (MPT). So what caused these declines and extinction?In this study 127 Ext. Gp species are identified from eight Cenozoic bathyal and abyssal sequences in the North Atlantic and equatorial Pacific Oceans. Most species are long-ranging with 80% originating in the Eocene or earlier. The greatest abundance and diversity of the Ext. Gp was in the warm oceanic conditions of the middle Eocene–early Oligocene. The group was subjected to significant changes in the composition of the faunal dominants and slightly enhanced species turnover during and soon after the rapid Eocene–Oligocene cooling event. Declines in the relative abundance and flux of the Ext. Gp, together with enhanced species loss, occurred during middle–late Miocene cooling, particularly at abyssal sites. The overall number of Ext. Gp species present began declining earlier at mid abyssal depths (in middle Miocene) than at upper abyssal (in late Pliocene–early Pleistocene) and then lower bathyal depths (in MPT). By far the most significant Ext. Gp declines in abundance and species loss occurred during the more severe glacial stages of the late Pliocene–middle Pleistocene.Clearly, the decline and extinction of this group of deep-sea foraminifera was related to the function of their specialized apertures and the stepwise cooling of global climate and deep water. We infer that the apertural modifications may be related to the method of food collection or processing, and that the extinctions may have resulted from the decline or loss of their specific phytoplankton or prokaryote food source, that was more directly impacted than the foraminifera by the cooling temperatures.  相似文献

The trace fossil Zoophycos in the upper Pliocene deep-sea deposits (Shiramazu Formation) distributed in the southernmost part of Boso Peninsula, central Japan, appears to be a product of feeding and excretory behavior by surface deposit-feeders inhabiting middle bathyal depths. Ecology and anatomy of modern deep-sea echiurans are consistent with those of the Zoophycos producers based on the Pliocene examples. Consequently, deep-sea echiurans may be producers of Zoophycos . Systematic lamellae structures of the spreite reflect excretory behavior in sediment resulting from deposit-feeding on the sea-floor. The causes of the appearance of large blue king crabs (Paralithodes platypus) in Peter the Great Bay for the last decade are discussed. This species is an important commercial resource in the waters of Russian Far Eastern seas, and its general concentrations are related mainly to the sublittoral and upper bathyal zones of the northwestern Bering Sea and the northern Sea of Okhotsk. Until recently, this species has been observed in areas along the continental coast of the northwestern Sea of Japan up to the Peter the Great Bay, where it incidentally showed up in red king crab (P. camtschaticus) and snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) catches but was also commercially used. This area was considered as the southern periphery of the species range. Since the late 1990s, both male and female blue king crabs have been recorded in trawl and trap catches during research works conducted within the Peter the Great Bay. Since 2002, any commercial catches of shelf crab species are prohibited in the waters south of 47°20′ N because of a dramatic decline in their populations. Since then all the illegally caught crabs, including blue king crabs that are seized live from poachers, are released back into the water in certain places of the bay. In total, at least 29 503 blue king crabs, including egg-bearing females, were released within the period from 2002 to November 2009. At present, the overall blue king crab abundance in Peter the Great Bay, estimated based on the trap catches over an area of 7048 km2, is 50500, the abundance of commercial-size males (with a carapace width over 130 mm) is 7500, and the male to female ratio is 1.00: 1.35. The increase in the blue king crab population observed in the bay is the result of the immigration of mature and viable individuals from other areas of its range. After this “uncontrolled introduction” blue king crabs adapted to new conditions, and then began breeding and spreading over the entire area of the bay.  相似文献

A study of the stable isotope composition (δ18O, δ13C) of biogenic (ostracod, mollusc) and authigenic carbonates in the Ballagan Formation, Lower Carboniferous of Scotland, coupled with evidence from sedimentology and associated fossil fauna and flora, supports the argument that this formation was deposited in a coastal flood plain setting, in brackish (0.5 < 30‰ NaCl) and hypersaline (> 40‰ NaCl) waters, but in the absence of persistent normal marine conditions. The oxygen isotope data from the Ballagan Formation divide into three clusters: a diagenetic field defined by low δ18O (< − 11‰ VPDB); an intermediary field (δ18O − 11‰ to − 9‰) composed of a mixture of known primary and secondary (diagenetic) carbonates; and samples within the range of − 9‰ to − 4‰ which, as far as we can ascertain, are largely unaltered. No samples give typical Early Carboniferous δ18O marine values. Average marine carbonates from Europe have δ18O between − 4‰ to − 3‰. The Ballagan Formation carbonates were probably deposited in evaporated freshwater and/or brackish water. This conclusion is supported by the presence of evaporites (gypsum, anhydrite, halite pseudomorphs) and common desiccation-cracked mudstone surfaces throughout the Ballagan Formation, suggesting conditions of fluctuating salinity in ephemeral bodies of water. The stable isotope data support the notion that the ostracod assemblages of the Ballagan Formation were colonising brackish water and hypersaline ecologies on a coastal flood plain during the Early Carboniferous, a stage of development that may have encouraged their colonisation of fully non-marine (limnetic) environments during the later Carboniferous. The ostracods include cytherellacean and kloedenellacean species known from marginal marine sites elsewhere, but probably tolerant of brackish water, podocopid species such as ‘Bythocyprisaequalis that may have been adapted for brackish water settings on coastal flood plains (ephemeral lakes and lagoons), and paraparchitacean-dominated assemblages that may signal harsh (hypersaline or desiccating) environments.  相似文献

A comparative study of recent epiphytal ostracod and benthic foraminiferal populations was conducted in August 2001, at two gulfs (Korthi and Kastro) located at the southeastern part of Andros Island (middle Aegean Sea, Greece). Thirty samples (representing living macro-benthic algae and seagrasses) from both gulfs were studied and a total of 34 ostracod species and 60 benthic foraminiferal species were identified. In the gulf of Korthi both benthic foraminiferal and epiphytal ostracod assemblages were characterized by high abundances of Amphistegina lessonii and Xestoleberis spp., respectively, therefore the performed Q-mode cluster analysis verified the presence of a Normal Environment Biofacies (NE). Declined Environment (DE) and Stressed (SE) Environment Biofacies were recognized in the gulf of Kastro, an area more affected by anthropogenic activities. Several deformed foraminiferal specimens have been documented in the assemblages from both gulfs, but malformed tests are significantly increased in SE Biofacies of Kastro gulf. This study suggests that great accumulations of A. lessonii (35-60%) associated with high frequencies of Xestoleberis communis and/or Xestoleberis decipiens and high species diversities can be used as bioindicators of coastal health.  相似文献

The ecology of ostracods in the northern Japan Sea is well documented. These ostracods can be grouped in two assemblages: (1) the Tsushima Warm Current Surface Water Assemblage (TWSA, northern), which lives in an environment where summer temperatures reach up to about 20 °C, winter temperatures up to about 5 °C. Several species in this assemblage, e.g., Loxoconcha optima and Pontocythere subjaponica tolerate seasonally low temperatures, and lived in the region since the early Pleistocene; (2) the Japan Sea Intermediate Proper Water Assemblage (JSI-PA), which lives at greater depths (lower shelf to upper slope). This assemblage lives under stable conditions, with a small annual range in temperature (0–5 °C). The assemblage has a relatively low diversity, contains species such as Acanthocythereis dunelmensis and Robertsonites spp., and has been present in the area since the Pliocene. These data indicate that the presently living species either tolerate seasonally low temperatures (TWSA, northern) or tolerate stable, but very low temperatures (near 0 °C), and therefore, they could survive the Pleistocene environmental fluctuations in the Japan Sea caused by glacio-eustatic changes in sea level. Our data document the survival of ostracod species during past climate change, and thus can be used to speculate on the effect of possible future climate change on the faunas. We predict that some of the cryophilic species in the Japan Sea cannot be expected to survive global warming for more than 2 centuries.  相似文献

The development of benthic foraminiferal assemblages from the Paleocene outcrops of the El Haria Formation near El Kef, Tunisia is discussed qualitatively and quantitatively. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental evolution between the K/Pg boundary interval and the late Paleocene event, and to compare this evolution with results from other sites along the southern Tethyan margin. Eighty-four samples, covering virtually the entire Paleocene, provide a dataset that allows detailed qualitative and multivariate analysis. The benthic foraminiferal faunas indicate a complex pattern of environmental changes during the Paleocene, marked by the succession of different benthic associations. Following the K/Pg boundary event, community restoration was characterized by the gradual build-up of faunal diversity. Decreasing dominance and the entry of taxa common to normal marine, outer neritic to upper bathyal environments indicate the completion of the ecosystem restoration in Zone Plb. A highly diverse benthic foraminiferal assemblage persisted throughout the remainder of the early Paleocene into the earliest late Paleocene. At the P3a-P3b zonal transition relative sea-level lowering is evidenced by the sudden disappearance or decreasing abundance of deeper-water taxa (e.g. Anomalinoides affinis, A. susanaensis, Gavelinella beccariiformis). Neritic deposition continued into Zone P4, when trophic levels at the seafloor increased as indicated by the entry and increasing dominance of species such as Anomalinoides cf. aegyptiacus, Bulimina midwayensis, and B. strobila, which we consider to be sensitive to eutrophication. The combined effect of shallowing and the subsequent eutrophication led to the establishment of assemblages similar to late Paleocene benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Egyptian sections, some of which record the latest Paleocene extinction event. These assemblages were interpreted to be indicative of a middle neritic, highly eutrophic environment. Enhanced vertical fluxes of organic matter along the southern Tethyan margin may have resulted from intensified upwelling. This eventually led to oxygen deficiency at the seafloor. It appears that oxygen-deficient, high-productivity shelves were a common feature of the southern Tethyan margin during the latest Paleocene.  相似文献

This paper describes three new species of Pisidiidae, Pisidium (P.) zhushutangense, Sphaerium(S.) pyrum and Sphaerium (S.) fujianense, assoeiated with very abundant Plicatounio (P.) naktongensis Kobayashi et Suzuki, Plicatounio (P.) fujianensis Gu et Ma and Trigonioides (T.) quadratus Gu et Ma from the Lower Cretaceous upper Hekou Formation of Zhushutang, Hekou Basin, Ninghhua, Fujian. In Japan, the last two species, Sphaerium (S.) pyrum and Sphaerium (S.) fujianense, or their affinis coexist with each other in the upper Wakino Subgroup, the lower Wakamiya and upper Wakamiya Formations, and the lower Inakura Formation, Yamaji Shale, which very probably can be correlated with the upper Hekou Formation yielding these two species.The distinction between Pisidium and Sphaerium is summarized in Table I.  相似文献

The location of the Pohang Basin near the Korea Strait in the southwest of the Sea of Japan (East Sea) makes this area appropriate for providing a record of paleoenvironmental/biotic changes associated with the early Neogene (16.5 Ma) opening of this gateway to the Pacific Ocean. Stable isotopic and planktonic foraminiferal records are presented that assist with the understanding of paleoenvironmental changes in the Sea of Japan resulting from the opening of the Korea Strait. The oldest sediments of early Neogene age of the Pohang Basin overlie Cretaceous basement and are Early Miocene (>16.5 Ma) shallow, estuarine facies containing a benthic foraminiferal assemblage dominated by Ammonia beccarii (L.). The oldest early Neogene planktonic foraminiferal assemblages in the basin are 16.5 Ma in age (latest Early Miocene foraminiferal zone N8). The migration of these planktonic assemblages to the Sea of Japan at that time appears to have resulted from the initial opening of the Korea Strait. The overlying early Neogene marine sequence of the Pohang Basin extends from 16.5 Ma (Zone N8) through 14 Ma (Zone N10). Change in the oxygen isotopic record of the Pohang Basin sequence suggests strong local paleoenvironmental control related to the early opening of the Korea Strait. Early Middle Miocene isotopic temperatures of planktonic foraminifera are relatively cool at 15 Ma at a time when global temperatures were high in the middle/low latitude regions. It was not until 14.8 Ma that isotopic temperatures of planktonic foraminifera increased markedly. This distinct warming is inferred to reflect the major intrusion of the Kuroshio Current into the Sea of Japan probably as a result of further critical opening and deepening of the Korea Strait. At this time planktonic foraminifera increased in abundance reflecting expanding oceanic influence. A cooling that followed at 14.5 Ma, when the strait was well open is unlikely to reflect local tectonic control on the paleoceanography, but global cooling during the early Middle Miocene associated with the expansion of the East Antarctic ice sheet.  相似文献
