Nutrition and burrowing energetics of the Cape mole-rat Georychus capensis   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Summary At 22°C the resting oxygen consumption of G. capensis is 1.13±0.05 cm3O2·g-1·h-1 (mean± S.E.). In loose sandy soil the burrowing metabolic rate was approximately three times that of resting (3.41±0.19 cm3O2·g-1· h-1). Rate of oxygen consumption while burrowing bears a linear relationship with rate of burrowing. The equation of the regression line describing this relationship was used to construct a model for calculating energy expenditure of burrowing in free-living mole-rats. The diet of G. capensis consists of some green plant material and geophyte corms. The latter has a mean gross energy content of 16.36 kJ·g-1 dry weight. The digestibility coefficient for captive G. capensis fed on sweet potato, was 97.42±0.41%. Data collected from an excavated burrow system revealed that the total energetic cost of constructing the burrow amounted to 79% of the estimated digestible energy available from geophyte corms in the area. A food store in the same burrow system was sufficient to meet the maintenance requirements of an adult G. capensis, resting at 22°C, for approximately 80–85 days. Soil samples taken at random adjacent to the burrow contained corms with a mean estimated digestible energy value of 2084 kJ per m3 of soil. A comparison of energetic cost of burrowing and randomly available digestible energy in the field suggests that foraging patterns are not random.  相似文献

Summary Both seismic and auditory signals were tested for their propagation characteristics in a field study of the Cape mole-rat (Georychus capensis), a subterranean rodent in the family Bathyergidae. This solitary animal is entirely fossorial and apparently communicates with its conspecifics by alternately drumming its hind legs on the burrow floor. Signal production in this species is sexually dimorphic, and mate attraction is likely mediated primarily by seismic signalling between individuals in neighboring burrows. Measurements within, and at various distances away from, natural burrows suggest that seismic signals propagate at least an order of magnitude better than auditory signals. Moreover, using a mechanical thumper which could be triggered from a tape recording of the mole-rat's seismic signals, we established that the vertically-polarized surface wave (Rayleigh wave) propagates with less attenuation than either of the two horizontally-polarized waves. The feeding habits and reproductive biology of the Ghana mole‐rat, Cryptomys zechi (Matchie), were studied in a Guinea savanna woodland in Ghana. Both tunnel contents and stomach content analysis indicated that bulbs and tubers constituted the commonest and most preferred food items, although some animal food materials were also consumed. Five plant species, Urgenia altissima, Manihot utilisima, Curuligo sp., Oxalis corniculata and Archis hypogea, were the most popular plant food source. Breeding occurred during the rainy season (March–August) and was at its peak in July. There is evidence that the species is capable of producing two litters in a year. In a colony, reproduction is restricted to one female and one male. Males reached sexual maturity at a lower body weights (105 g) than females (155 g). Estimated mean litter size was 1.5 (range 1–2), the smallest among the bathergids. Available data on birth weights of three other species of social Cryptomys indicate that C. zechi has the highest birth weight, which is comparable to that of solitary bathyergids.  相似文献

Cryptomys darlingi is a social subterranean rodent mole which inhabits the mesic regions of south-eastern and central Africa. Mashona mole-rats live in small colonies (5-9 animals) in which reproduction is normally restricted to the largest male and female in the colony. The non-reproductive members in a mature colony cannot be placed into clearly defined work-related groups based on body mass.
The dominance hierarchy of a young colony was found to be linear, with a value of 1.00 calculated from Landau's linearity index, while that of a mature colony of nine mole-rats was almost linear (0.77). Dominance was found to be related to gender in the mature colony, with males more dominant than females, and to age in the young colony. The reproductive mole-rats are the dominant animals within their respective genders. Dominance appears to correlate positively with body mass (rs = 0.77 in the mature colony and rs = 0.93 in the young colony).
Popularity studies show that smaller animals and females tend to be more popular than the larger massed individuals or males. In the mature colony which contained predominantly adult animals, the reproductive pair was among the least popular. While in the young colony, composed predominantly of sub-adult and juvenile animals, the reproductive pair was the most popular.

Cryptomys damarensis is one of the few subterranean rodents which is social. This species is found in the semi-arid regions of southwestern and central Africa. The Damaraland mole-rat occurs in coloniesof up to 25 individuals, in which reproduction is limited to one or two of the largest males and the largest female in the colony.
The mean colony size is 18 mole-rats ( n =6 colonies). The mean colony biomass is 2.32 kg and the sex ratio is female biased (0.71–0.78). The number of mole-rats in each colony, the mean body mass and the sex ratio are described for six field-captured colonies, three of which were captured in their entirety.
The dominance hierarchy of two colonies of C. damarensis was found to be linear with a value of between 0.94 and 1.00 calculated from Landau's linearity index. Dominance was found to be related to gender, with the males more dominant than females. The reproductive individuals are the dominant animals within each respective gender. The non-reproductive females rank lowest in the hierarchy.  相似文献

When acclaimated for two months at 26 C the social Mashona mole-rat Cryptomys hottentotus darlingi (±S.D.) resting metabolic rate (RMR) of 0·98±0.·14cm2O2g -1 h-1 ( n =21), within a thermal neutral zone (TNZ) of 28 31·5 C ambient temperature (Ta). The body temperature (Tb) of the mole-rat is very low. 33·3±0·5 C, and remained stable between 25 31·5 C ( n =28). Above 33 C. Tb increased to a mean of 34·±0· C (n=28) (Ta range 33 39 C). Below Ta 25 C. Tb showed strong poikilothermic tendencies, with Tb dropping to a mean of 26·8±1·16 C. whereas above Ta25 C. Tb varied in a typically endothermic pattern. The conductance is high 0·19±0·03 cm2 O2g1 C 1 (n=28) at the lower limit of thermoneutrality. The mean RMR at 18 C (the lowest Ta tested) was 2·63 ± 0·55 cm3 O2g 1 h 1 (n=7) which is 2·6 times that of the resting metabolic rate in the TNZ.  相似文献

The skull of most subterranean tooth-digging rodents is markedly affected by their digging mode. In the present study, we investigated the cranial variation in a strictly subterranean, highly specialized Afrotropical tooth-digger, Heliophobius argenteocinereus (Bathyergidae, Rodentia), using a geometric morphometric approach and evaluated the effect of different factors on size and shape differences among four populations. No evidence for sexual dimorphism was found in skull size or shape. The cranial shape variation was large and influenced mainly by the type of habitat (miombo woodland versus farmland and grassland) and the latitudinal gradient. The dorsal side of the skull appears to be more plastic and adaptable to local environments, as well as more independent of size, than the ventral side. Only the shortening of the rostrum is presumably an adaptive process independent of size that leads to an increase of efficacy of the tooth-digging apparatus in Heliophobius , whereas the increase in the in-force and the more procumbent incisors both comprise size-related changes caused by ontogenetic allometric growth.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 822–831.  相似文献

African mole-rats are subterranean rodents, which rarely if ever leave the safety of their burrow systems. The environment of the burrows is humid, with relatively stable temperatures, and may have a hypoxic and hypercapnic atmosphere. One of crucial problems related to the subterranean way of life in mammals is avoidance of overheating, because traditional mammalian cooling mechanisms are not effective under high humidity. In African mole-rats, a variety of adaptations have evolved in response to this and other challenges of the underground ecotope. Traditionally, attention has been devoted mainly to the naked mole-rat Heterocephalus glaber, which became popular as a result of its eusociality and absence of fur, both being unique phenomena in small mammals. Despite more recent research, information on other species is still relatively limited and patchy. I review the results of studies on African mole-rats that are relevant for the understanding of their energetics and thermal biology. Attention is paid to the parameters of the burrow environment, which represent the main selection pressures shaping their physiology. In addition, an overview is given of the morphological, physiological and behavioural adaptations helping mole-rats to face temperature extremes, mechanisms by which they deal with a surplus of metabolic heat and how changes in ambient temperature influence their daily activity. The naked mole-rat is compared to its furred relatives to determine whether this species is really exceptional from the point of thermal biology. An ordination analysis was conducted using published data on mole-rat body temperature, thermoneutral zone, resting metabolic rate and thermal conductance. Most of the variability in these characteristics was found to be explained by body mass, followed by temperature characteristics of climate, but not precipitation, of the species distributional ranges. This analysis shows that the naked mole-rat is comparable to the other mole-rat species in these physiological characteristics.  相似文献

In response to reports claiming that part of the ability of mole-rats (Bathyergidae) to orientate with respect to the geomagnetic field involves orientation of their burrow systems in a southward direction, we measured the orientation of burrows of the Damara mole-rat, Cryptomys damarensis , in the Kalahari Desert. The Cape mole rat Georychus capensis is a solitary mole rat that inhabits the winter rainfall region of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Circulating basal concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) were found to be significantly higher in the breeding season in both sexes. During both the breeding and non-breeding season, administration of exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) increased circulatory LH levels. The magnitude of the LH response to an overdose of exogenous GnRH both in and out of the breeding season in males and females was not significantly different. Typically, seasonally breeding species exhibit a down-regulation of the pituitary and reproductive functions out of the breeding season. It appears that there is no down-regulation of GnRH receptors at the level of the pituitary out of the breeding season, because the pituitary responds to an exogenous GnRH challenge equally both in and out of the breeding period. The Cape mole rat exhibits the potential for opportunistic breeding out of the breeding period, provided that environmental factors are favourable. This finding questions whether this mole rat is actually a seasonal breeder or whether reproduction is hindered by the ecological constraint of the lack of opportunities to burrow and find mates at certain times of the year.  相似文献

Cryptomys darlingi occurs in the mesic Miombo woodland of north-eastem Zimbabwe. It occurs in colonies of up to nine individuals, in which reproduction is limited to one of the largest males and the largest female in the colony.
Reproduction and details of colony size and number of breeding animals in a colony are described for five complete field-captured colonies.
In captivity, mating is not confined to a particular season, and up to three litters of pups are orn per annum. The reproductive female initiates the pre-copulatory behaviour. The gestation lengti is 56–61 days ( n = 2 ). The new-born pups are altricial and litter size is small = 1.7 ± 0.5 ( n = 6). In this case, the pups first left the nest 10 days after birth, began to eat solids when 14 days old, and were fully weaned at five weeks. They began to spar with each other when 36–40 days old, but did not disperse and were incorporated into the colony. This suggests that the Mashona mole-rat colonies are composed of a founding pair and at least three successive litters of pups.  相似文献

Reproduction and details of colony size and the number of breeding animals in a colony are described for one complete and two incomplete field-captured colonies. One incomplete colony was kept in captivity for more than 3 years, whereas the complete colony was autopsied.

The reproductive mole-rats are the dominant animals within the colony. The non-reproductive females rank lowest in the hierarchy.
Mating was not confined to a particular season, but occurred more frequently during the summer months. The alpha male initiated pre-copulatory behaviour. The gestation length is 55 to 66 days (n = 2). Two litters each of three pups were born to the colony during captivity. The pups were relatively altricial. They wandered out of the nest 5 days after birth, began to eat solids when 10 days old, and were fully weaned at 4 weeks. When 2 weeks old the pups began to spar with each other and with some of the adult colony members, but levels of aggression were never high. The pups did not disperse but were incorporated into the colony, this suggesting that C. h. hottentotus colonies are largely composed of related individuals.  相似文献
