Factor analysis of the linear dimensions of 92 species of kingfisher indicated that morphological differences were associated with four diet categories (aquatic, littoral, terrestrial and fossorial animals). Analysis of covariance confirmed the significance of these differences for culmen, tarsus and tail length but not for wing length. Habitat factors resulted in some significant differences but these were less easy to interpret. One case of intraspecific variation showed similar trends for culmen length.  相似文献

Centris aenea Lepeletier is a solitary bee that has raised interest in management to pollinate crops, such as acerola, Malpighia emarginata. This study investigated the level of morphometric variability among populations of C. aenea from Northeastern Brazil. Traditional and geometric morphometric analyses were used. Head length, leg length, wing length, and wing shape were measured in samples (5-10 females) from eight localities. We did not find statistically significant differences among the populations (P > 0.01). The partial wing warps were similar in the populations and indicated that the bees were not morphometrically different. Our results suggest that C. aenea shows low population morphometric variability and highlight the need for further investigations on population variation in this species, preferably including populations sampled at the extremes of their geographic distribution. Significant insight into the population variation of C. aenea will probably require the use of molecular markers to allow a comparative approach between morphometric variability and genetic variability.  相似文献

Summary The elephant seal populations breeding on the Crozet and Kerguelen Archipelago were surveyed during the eighties. Elephant seals were observed moving between Kerguelen, Amsterdam, Heard Islands and Vestfold Hills and between Crozet and Prince-Edward Archipelagos. No exchanges were observed between Crozet and Kerguelen Archipelagos suggesting that the two populations are more isolated than previously stated. On the Crozet Archipelago, since 1966, the Possession Island population showed at 70% reduction in numbers of cows ashore and the population is still decreasing. On Kerguelen Island there has been a decline of 44% from 1956 to 1989 but the population appears to have stabilized since 1984. It is suggested that elephant seal populations in the Southern Indian Ocean may have been affected by a change at the trophic level over the last four decades. But the highest rate of decrease observed on the Crozet Archipelago and the fact that the population is still decreasing may be explained by additional factors, in particular by killer whale predation.  相似文献

The effects of temporal, spatial, environmental and operational effects on seabird incidental mortality in the legal Patagonian toothfish longline fishery operating, between 2003 and 2006, in French exclusive economic zones of Crozet and Kerguelen Islands were analysed. During the study period, the mean bycatch rate varied from 0.05 to 0.12 birds per 1,000 hooks. Two species were concerned by incidental mortality: white-chinned petrels (88%) and grey petrels (11.5%). Males of white-chinned petrel seemed more at a risk than females. Logbooks data tended to underreport mortality when compared with dedicated fishery observers. The results indicate that temporal (season or phenology) and spatial (area) factors reflecting mortality risk for seabirds played the most significant role in the incidental mortality of the two species. Operational (integrated weight mainline, number of scaring lines and number of hooks hauled) and environmental factors (wind/vessel angle, moon brightness) were also influential, although less significantly, in increasing this mortality risk. Our two steps analyses by separately modelling the probability of presence and the abundance given presence suggest that the decrease in seabird bycatch over the period was mainly due to an important decrease in probability (occurrence) of mortality.  相似文献

Although there is increasing evidence that climatic variations during the non-breeding season shape population dynamics of seabirds, most aspects of their winter distribution and ecology remain essentially unknown. We used stable isotope signatures in feathers to infer and compare the moulting (wintering) habitat of subantarctic petrels breeding at two distant localities (South Georgia and Kerguelen). Petrels showed species-specific wintering habitat preferences, with a similar pattern of latitudinal segregation for all but one taxon. At both localities, delta13C values indicated that blue petrels (Halobaena caerulea) moult in Antarctic waters, South Georgian diving petrels (Pelecanoides georgicus) in the vicinity of the archipelagos and/or in the Polar Frontal Zone and Antarctic prions (Pachyptila desolata) in warmer waters. In contrast, common diving petrels (Pelecanoides urinatrix) showed divergent strategies, with low and high intrapopulation variation at South Georgia and Kerguelen, respectively. Birds from Kerguelen dispersed over a much wider range of habitats, from coastal to oceanic waters and from Antarctica to the subtropics, whereas those from South Georgia wintered mainly in waters around the archipelago. This study is the first to show such striking between-population heterogeneity in individual wintering strategies, which could have important implications for likely demographic responses to environmental perturbation.  相似文献

Although polyamine (PA) metabolism in plants responds to abiotic stresses, few studies have investigated this response in plants under natural conditions. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, we studied the amine composition of the subantarctic crucifer Pringlea antiscorbutica R. Br. both in the field (Crozet and Kerguelen Islands) and under controlled temperatures in the laboratory. Plants collected from different sites showed a large variability of amine composition and contents. The aliphatic and acetylated amine composition of leaves allowed to statistically identify two groups. The first group, composed of Kerguelen coastal plants, was characterized by high levels of acetylspermidine and acetylspermine, showing the presence in P. antiscorbutica of this uncommon regulation pathway. PA acetylation may be induced in P. antiscorbutica under conditions of low water availability. The second group, composed of plants from Kerguelen altitude sites and plants from Crozet sites, showed high levels of free spermidine (Spd). In these plants, the ratio Spd/putrescine did not positively correlate with plant size as was found in developmental studies, suggesting that free Spd may be devoted to other aims, such as cold tolerance. Some differences between Crozet and Kerguelen plant responses suggested the possibility that different regulations of amine metabolism could take place in plants from these two islands. Agmatine accumulation pattern was diverse and suggested this amine to be sensitive to combinations of environmental factors. Studies on amine variation patterns in P. antiscorbutica provide insights into the roles of rarely reported amines, such as acetylated amines, in plant metabolic adaptation to abiotic stresses.  相似文献

Data on growth of 276 young Barn Owls were analysed with respect to the effects of year and month of hatching, hatch order and brood order. Growth characteristics considered were weight; lengths of culmen, tarsus, central tail feathers and quill of third outermost primary; standard wing length; and wing span. For weight the growth constant K was 0151 and time t 10- t 90 was 32-2 days. Least-squares analyses showed that gain in weight and culmen and tarsus length were affected by month of hatching with young hatched in the middle part of the breeding season showing the most rapid growth. Hatch order affected gain in weight. Differences in growth rates of all these characters were not, however, reflected in differences in weight or length at fledging except for the effects of brood on weight with second broods fledging at significantly lighter weights than first ones. Predictive equations for character against age are provided for all linear measurements. All characters examined attained apparent asymptotes before fledging except tail and standard wing length.  相似文献

The gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is one of the most widespread penguin species and has been proven to be highly plastic in many aspects of its ecology. However, data from their sub-Antarctic range suggest an unexplained decline of their populations over the last 10–20 years, stressing the need for additional knowledge on their breeding ecology and demography. The present study provides insights into the breeding ecology of the gentoo penguin at a major breeding site, Kerguelen Archipelago, over three breeding seasons (1987, 2002 and 2003). Similarly to other northern populations, gentoo penguins breeding at Kerguelen exhibited winter laying, slow provisioning rate, slow growth rate associated with an extended rearing period and relatively low breeding success compared to southern populations. Our study also revealed interannual differences in the timing of laying and growth parameters as well as unusual sex differences in parental investment. Despite their high plasticity, there are indications that gentoo penguins at the northern edge of their range might work at the upper limit of their capacities. Sub-Antarctic populations would, therefore, be more sensitive to environmental changes than more southerly ones and need to be closely monitored.  相似文献

树麻雀(Passer montanus)分布范围广、海拔梯度大,也是人类活动的伴随物种。对中国837个样本的10个形态特征与温度、日照、海拔和风速等4个主要环境因子进行相关分析,结果显示:树麻雀的体重、嘴裂、翅长、尾长、跗跖长、脑骨宽、眼间距与日照因子显著相关(P0.05),体重、体长、翅长、尾长、跗跖长与海拔因子显著相关(P0.05),体重、嘴峰、翅长、脑骨长与温度因子显著相关(P0.05),表明树麻雀的形态指标易随环境因子的变化而变化。通过控制经度和海拔两个变量,对形态指标与纬度的偏相关分析表明,体重、翅长、脑骨长和脑骨宽与纬度呈显著正相关(P0.05),体表突出部分嘴峰、嘴裂与纬度呈显著负相关(P0.05),即随着纬度的升高,树麻雀身体逐渐变大,符合贝格曼规律;体表突出部分嘴峰和嘴裂随纬度升高变短,符合阿伦规律。飞行能力与海拔因子呈极显著正相关(n=92,r=0.217,P=0.038),表明树麻雀在高海拔地区具有更强的飞行能力,这也许是它成为广布种的重要原因。  相似文献

Breeding success is often correlated with climate, but the underlying bottom-up mechanisms remain elusive—particularly in marine environments. Consequently, conservation plans of many species often consider climate change as a unilateral threat, ignoring that even nearby populations can show contradicting trends with climate. Better understanding the relationship between climate and environment at different scales can help us interpret local differences in population trends, ultimately providing better tools to evaluate the global response of a species to threats such as global warming. We studied a growing king penguin population nesting at Kerguelen island (Southern Indian Ocean), hosting one of the largest colonies in the world. We used a unique dataset of foraging, breeding success, and climate data spanning over 25 years to examine the links between climate, marine environment, and breeding success at this colony. The results were then compared to the neighboring population of Crozet, which experienced the steepest decline for this species over the past few decades. At Crozet, penguins experienced lower breeding success in warmer years due to productive currents shifting away from the colony, affecting foraging behavior during chick rearing. At Kerguelen, while chick mass and survival experienced extreme variation from year to year, the annual variation was not associated with the position of the currents, which varied very little compared to the situation in Crozet. Rather than being affected by prey distribution shifts, we found evidence that chick provisioning in Kerguelen might be influenced by prey abundance, which seem to rather increase in warmer conditions. Furthermore, warmer air temperature in winter increased chick survival rate, likely due to reduced thermoregulation cost. Investigating the mechanisms between climate and fitness allowed us to predict two different fates for these populations regarding ongoing global warming.  相似文献

We present morphometric data for the pink-footed shearwater (Puffinus creatopus) from both Chilean breeding colonies on Isla Mocha and Juan Fernández: weight, total length, wing length, tail length, head length, three bill and three tarsus size measurements and length of middle toe. Significant differences were found for most measurements between males and females as well as between birds from the two different breeding localities. In general, males were bigger than females, and birds from Juan Fernández were bigger than those from Isla Mocha. Geographic differences most likely reflect some kind of ecomorphological adaptation. Some variables, especially the total length of head, seem to be useful for sex determination in the field.  相似文献

Summary The growth ofNotothenia squamifrons is analysed using scale reading of specimens from various isolated areas of the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean (Kerguelen, Crozet and Marion Islands; Ob, Lena and Kara-Dag seamounts). Studying reproductive biology reveals that spawning is annual and occurs during austral spring. Hatching takes place in summer. Scaling is set during the autumn. The smallest scaled fish measure 3.8 cm in total length. The data mentioned above, the check number on the scales and the sampling dates lead to the identification of the different age groups. Differences in growth rate appear between the studied areas. The fastest growth is observed around the Kerguelen Islands where the oldest specimens are 19 years old and reach 52 cm in total length. On the other hand, in the Crozet population,N. squamifrons does not live more than 12 years for a maximum length of 30 cm. Scale reading in fish from the Ob and Lena seamounts shows a minor decrease in growth during the winter season when compared to that in the other areas. The hydrographical conditions of this sector of the Southern Ocean may, in part, explain these differences: especially temperature and plankton biomass seem to effect growth rate. The cold antarctic waters and the highest plankton productivity, inducing the optimal growth rate, are found in the Kerguelen Islands.  相似文献

Gender was determined by laparoscopic visualization of the gonads for 38 adult American flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber L.) and 36 adult Chilean flamingos (P. chilensis L.). Concomitant body weight (kg) and linear measurements (mm) of the culmen (bill), tarsus (tarsometatarsus), middle toe, and wing were taken. Statistical comparisons of body weight and linear measurements for male vs. female were made for each species. Also, the same-sex statistical comparisons were made between these two species, and between each of these two species and with data for greater flamingos (P. r. roseas L.) from a previous publication. As previously published for greater flamingos, an overlap between sexes existed in all measurements with males on average larger than females for both American and Chilean flamingos. However, Students' t-test indicated a significant sexual difference for all measurements between males and females of each species except for culmen length in Chilean flamingos. Students' t-test also indicated a significant difference when species were compared (Chilean vs. greater, and American vs. Chilean) and subspecies (American vs. greater) were compared for most of the 5 measurements. Thus, despite limitations imposed by between-sex overlap, weights and linear measurements, especially tarsus, middle toe, and wing length, appear to be useful in determining an individual's gender when species or subspecies identification is considered.  相似文献

This study investigated the level of morphometric and genetic variability among populations of Anastrepha pickeli Lima from several localities in Brazil, one locality in Bolivia and one in Paraguay. Traditional and geometric morphometric analyses were used, as well as sequencing of a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase gene (COI). Six variables were measured from the aculeus for traditional morphometric analysis and 14 landmarks from the right wing were used for geometric analysis, using 10 specimes/population. The aculeus tip length, aculeus width at the end of the cloaca opening, and the serrate part length contributed with 62.7% for grouping. According to the results from traditional morphometry, there was no significant difference, but the multivariate tests showed that the canonical variables were statistically significant, indicating a difference in the wing conformation among populations. Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicated that the populations clustered into three clades and revealed a high level of genetic variation within A. pickeli populations from various geographic regions. Anastrepha pickeli populations differed among them according to the methods used in this study, showing incongruence among the methods used.  相似文献

Age and sex dependent spatial segregation has resulted in limited knowledge of the ecology and demography of sperm whale adult males feeding seasonally in high latitudes. This study focused on adult males interacting with the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) fishery operating off the Kerguelen and Crozet Archipelagos. Demographic parameters were estimated using a 10‐yr‐long photo‐identification data set paired with multistate closed robust design capture‐mark‐recapture models. The examination of a set of 29,078 photographs taken from fishing vessels during sperm whale depredation events resulted in identification of 295 individuals with nine visiting both study areas. Dispersal between both study regions was estimated to be 1% per year. The mean annual number of interacting sperm whales was estimated to n = 82 (95% CI 58–141) in Crozet and n = 106 (95% CI 76–174) in Kerguelen. Transient proportions were 13% in Crozet and 26% in Kerguelen. Corrected for transience, apparent survival estimates were 0.953 (95% CI 0.890–0.993) in Crozet, and 0.911 (95% CI 0.804–0.986) in Kerguelen. These survival and population size estimates are the first for depredating adult males in high latitudes, and can be used in evaluating the current conservation status of this historically harvested stock and to investigate depredation trends in 35 both Crozet and Kerguelen Islands.  相似文献

Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) are found across the Southern Ocean with a circumpolar distribution and notable genetic and morphological variation across their geographic range. Whether this geographic variation represents species‐level diversity has yet to be investigated in an integrative taxonomic framework. Here, we show that four distinct populations of gentoo penguins (Iles Kerguelen, Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and South Shetlands/Western Antarctic Peninsula) are genetically and morphologically distinct from one another. We present here a revised taxonomic treatment including formal nomenclatural changes. We suggest the designation of four species of gentoo penguin: P. papua in the Falkland Islands, P. ellsworthi in the South Shetland Islands/Western Antarctic Peninsula, P. taeniata in Iles Kerguelen, and a new gentoo species P. poncetii, described herein, in South Georgia. These findings of cryptic diversity add to many other such findings across the avian tree of life in recent years. Our results further highlight the importance of reassessing species boundaries as methodological advances are made, particularly for taxa of conservation concern. We recommend reassessment by the IUCN of each species, particularly P. taeniata and P. poncetii, which both show evidence of decline.  相似文献

The land snail Notodiscus hookeri, widely distributed in subantarctic islands, shows a large intraspecific variation in shell morphology. In the present work, shell size and form of individuals from populations located in Crozet and Kerguelen archipelagos were investigated by means of multivariate statistics. Variation in shell morphometrics was analysed after the partitioning of the overall variation into size and shape components by means of a principal component-based approach. Shell size shows a significant spatial heterogeneity, which seems essentially related to environmental pressures. Previous works pointed to a greater conchological variation between populations from Kerguelen but present observations show that intra-island variances are not significantly different in the two islands studied. Variation in shell shape splits the populations into two main entities because of different allometric relationships between two shell height components and all other measurements. However, using geographical affinities of populations as instrumental variables shows that more complex environmental features interfered in population clustering.  相似文献

Global location sensors (GLS) are increasingly being used to determine animal position at sea. Their small size and weight means that they can be attached to the leg of volant birds with supposedly little impact on the flight ability. However, very few studies have investigated the impact that foot-attached devices may have on the diving ability of foot-propelled seabirds. We compared the diving activity of two groups of free-ranging great cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo carbo , both groups carrying identical time-depth recorders attached to the tail, and one group also having leg-attached GLS. Our results showed that there were no differences between the two groups in any of the diving parameters investigated, at least over the short term. Caution should be exercised when extrapolating to other species, especially those smaller than great cormorants, and also when deploying GLS over longer periods.  相似文献

The sex of 59 adult Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus L.) was determined by laparoscopic exam of the gonads. Concomitant body weight (kg) and linear measurements (mm) of the culmen (bill), tarsus, middle toe, and wing were taken and compared for males vs. females. Although an overlap between sexes existed in all measurements, males on average were larger than females. Student's t-test indicated significant sexual differences for all five measurements. Thus, weights and linear measurements—especially tarsus, middle toe, and wing length—appear to be a useful parameter in determining an individual's sex in lieu of laparoscopic, feather pulp, blood chromosome, or fecal steroid analysis.  相似文献

Benthic divers are dependent on local resources and may therefore adopt different foraging strategies to cope with their energetic requirements in varying situations. We investigated the diet of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) at Kerguelen Islands, comparing its spatial and temporal variations with the general prey distribution. The study was conducted at four sites over 2 years. In total, 212 stomach contents were collected over the entire breeding season. The diet was composed mainly of neritic fish and crustaceans, with important spatial and seasonal variations. Fish dominated the diet at localities facing the open sea (from 38.0% to 94.6% by mass), whereas crustaceans dominated at the more protected site (84.3% by mass). Fish were more abundant in the winter diet and Euphausia vallentini, the major crustacean species, was more abundant in the summer diet. No inter-year variations were detected. These results are consistent with local prey availability, and highlight the large plasticity of the gentoo penguin diet and foraging behaviour.  相似文献
