Bark/phloem disk sandwiches (100 cm2) were colonized with one to six mating pairs of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., to observe gallery construction and evaluate if avoidance behavior occurs between beetles. Frequencies of turn aways, touches, and crosses (three characteristics used to describe conspecific interaction) all increased significantly with beetle density. A threshold of three mating pairs within the 100- cm2 phloem area was the density at which avoidance behavior became evident. At a threshold of five mating pairs the number of gallery crossings was significantly greater than at lower densities. Single and paired female beetles introduced into artificial galleries crossed empty neighboring galleries significantly more often than when neighboring galleries were occupied with other D. frontalis. The data suggest that D. frontalis females can regulate gallery spacing within the host through their ability to detect nearby beetles and their galleries. Possible spacing mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

Timing of arrival at a resource often determines an individual’s reproductive success. Tree-killing bark beetles can reproduce in healthy trees by attacking in adequate numbers to overcome host defences that could otherwise be lethal. This process is mediated by aggregation and antiaggregation pheromones. Beetles that arrive early in such a “mass attack” must contend with undiminished tree defences, and produce enough pheromones to attract more beetles, but have a head start on gallery construction and egg-laying. Beetles that arrive late may be impeded by competition and diminishing availability of phloem, but should experience fewer costs associated with pheromone production and battling tree defences. We investigated relationships between timing of arrival, body size, pheromone production and fitness in the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis. In field experiments, we captured beetles that arrived early (pioneers) and late on slash pine trees, Pinus elliottii, and measured pheromone amounts in their hindguts. We marked gallery entrances of beetles as they landed on a tree and measured their reproductive success after the attack terminated. We found no difference in body size or pheromone amounts between early and late arrivers. Most beetles arrived at the middle of the attack sequence, and excavated longer galleries per day than early arrivers. The number of offspring produced per day by beetles that established galleries midway through mass attack was higher than those that arrived early or very late in the sequence. Our results suggest that beetles do not exhibit adaptive phenotypic plasticity in pre-landing pheromone production, depending on the extent of previous colonisation of a host. Rather, it appears that stabilising selection favours beetles that attack in the middle of the sequence, and contributes to attack synchrony. Synchronous attack on trees is essential before population booms characteristic of tree-killing bark beetles can occur in nature.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The bole of a Norway spruce, Picea abies (L.) Karst., was cut in 25 cm sections and infested in the laboratory with 2 or 8 females/dm2 of Ips typographus (L.) and an equal number of males.
2. One log of each beetle density was dissected every second day, beginning 2 days after female introduction.
3. The oviposition rate was highest at the beginning of the breeding period for both densities and then declined, especially at the high density. Residence time is a useful approximation for the number of laid eggs in the beginning of the oviposition period or when the density is low.
4. Final gallery length and egg number per gallery were on average significantly smaller at density 8 than at density 2.
5. Linear relationships between total gallery length and number of egg niches were found to be similar for the two densities.
6. An estimate of the egg to adult mortality at different densities was found by using data from a field study that related gallery length to breeding density in attacked living trees, together with published relationships between density and egg niches or emergence of new adults.
7. It was concluded that both decreased oviposition rate and earlier re-emergence at higher densities contribute to a declining oviposition with increasing density. The final offspring production is futher reduced by lower survival due to larval competition as density increases.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The diversity of mating systems in bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) is poorly understood. Ips latidens (LeConte) is a small-bodied species of a harem polygynous genus whose mating system in nature had not been established previously. This study examines the breeding biology of I. latidens breeding in recently dead ponderosa pine ( Pinus ponderosa ) in California. It was expected that both the heterogeneous habitat quality inherent in dead trees and small body size would favour polygyny.
2. Contrary to expectations, I. latidens was found to be monogamous on the basis of excavations of 131 galleries conducted throughout the oviposition period at two wind-felled trees and at four sites composed of freshly-cut logs. Males left the galleries much sooner than females (50% gone by 24 and 36 days, respectively).
3. Individual females made up to four egg gallery arms extending from the male nuptial chamber, with the number of arms and the length of individual arms increasing with the age of the gallery. The relationship between total gallery length and gallery age was consistent among the trees and log sites, and did not depend on the presence of the male.
4. Ips latidens bred in a wide range of tree diameters (10–24 cm), and occurred in both pure aggregations and in aggregations with two other bark beetle species, Dendroctonus brevicomis and I. paraconfusus . The presence of the other species did not appear to influence negatively the density of I. latidens .
5. Monogamy in I. latidens may be due to lower male mortality during dispersal associated with a greater range of suitable breeding habitat than occurs for other Ips species, resulting in an even sex ratio at breeding sites.  相似文献

The study of life history dynamics of the pine sawyer beetle Monochamus carolinensis (Olivier) is of interest because the beetles are vectors for the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle, the causal agent of pine wilt in susceptible pine trees. Previous observation of a laboratory colony of M. carolinensis suggested numbers of adult beetles reared from logs varied little in relation to oviposition densities among individual logs. Logs in laboratory colonies are routinely subjected to artificially high oviposition rates. The objectives of this study were to examine the relationship between initial oviposition rate, holding time (time between log cut and oviposition), log volume and area and adult survivorship in laboratory colony. This study examined the number of eggs, larvae, adults and generation survivorship in logs over a 2‐year period. The number of adults emerged per log was not related to the number of eggs laid. Late larval and adult numbers were significantly correlated with log size. Only 12% of the initial cohort completed development and emerged as adults. We attribute the high within‐log mortality of beetles to intraspecific competition and cannibalism.  相似文献

Abstract  1. Bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) accept or reject host conifers based partly on concentrations of phloem monoterpenes. They colonise trees in aggregations, in response to pheromones that attract flying beetles to trees undergoing colonisation. A series of entry and gallery construction assays was conducted to determine whether responses by individual beetles to monoterpenes are altered by pheromones and/or the presence of other beetles.
2. Entry into the amended media by Ips pini and the length of time until entry were not influenced by the presence of aggregation pheromones.
3. Entry into amended media was influenced by the presence of other beetles on the surface of, or constructing galleries in, the substrate. The effects of alpha-pinene and limonene on host entry behaviour were mediated by the density of beetles on the surface of the assay arena, and by the density of beetles constructing galleries within the medium.
4. The percentage of beetles entering medium amended with higher concentrations of monoterpenes increased with increased density of beetles on the surface of the assay arena, until a threshold density of three or four beetles per assay arena, after which entrance rate declined.
5. The presence of other beetles constructing galleries elicited more rapid entry by the test beetles.
6. Gallery lengths were generally higher in the presence of aggregation pheromones.
7. Gallery lengths increased with increased density of beetles within the assay arena.
8. These results suggest a link between the density of bark beetles and responses of individuals. This linkage may partially explain behavioural changes observed during population eruptions.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The univoltine leaf-mining moth, Lithocolletis quercus Ams., is endemic to Israel, where it spends its 10.5 month larval period feeding only in the leaves of Quercus calliprinos Webb.
2. We compared patterns of egg deposition and sources of larval mortality to test whether oviposition patterns and site preferences confer an enhanced likelihood of larval survival.
3. Dominant sources of larval mortality were premature leaf abscission and death from unknown causes, whereas predation, parasitism and intraspecific interference accounted for relatively little larval mortality.
4. Eggs, and thus mines, were aggregated among leaves of host trees even though premature leaf abscission was positively correlated with density of mines per leaf. Interference competition among larvae was the only other density-dependent mortality factor.
5. Oviposition patterns within leaves mitigated the probability of death from larval interference, and probably also from early leaf abscission.
6. Despite these density-dependent mortality factors, overall probability of larval survival to pupation was independent of initial density of mines on a leaf.
7. The long larval period allows synchrony between oviposition flights and times of predictable resource availability.  相似文献

Hierarchical structured models for scramble and contest intraspecific competition are derived. The dynamical consequences of the two modes of competition are studied under the assumption that both populations divide up the same amount of a limiting resource at equal population levels. A comparison of equilibrium levels and their resiliences is made in order to determine which mode of competition is more advantageous. It is found that the concavity of the resource uptake rate is an important determining factor. We examined the effect of age differences on competition type in individuals of a scramble‐type strain of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.). When oviposition of two individuals on a bean was manipulated to introduce time intervals using two lines with different adult body colors, the frequency of two‐adult emergence decreased with the introduction of sequential oviposition. This result indicates that an age difference between two individuals induces contest competition. The frequency of adult emergence in older individuals decreased, whereas in younger individuals it increased with the introduction of sequential oviposition. Using a dissecting microscope, we observed that bodies of older individuals that died in the bean during the 4‐day oviposition interval were crushed at the pupal stage under the pupal chambers of younger individuals. These results show that an age difference between two larvae in a bean causes contest competition due to one‐sided interference by a younger individual during pupation of an older individual. Based on these experimental results, we discuss the ecological cause of contest competition and the population‐level consequences of identified interactions in scramble‐type C. maculatus.  相似文献

Understanding the ability of species to shift their geographic range is of considerable importance given the current period of rapid climate change. Furthermore, a greater understanding of the spatial population dynamics underlying range shifting is required to complement the advances made in climate niche modelling. A simulation model is developed which incorporates three key features that have been largely overlooked in studies of range shifting dynamics: the form of intraspecific competition, density dependent dispersal and the transient dynamics of habitat patches. The results show that the exact shape of the response depends critically on both local and patch dynamics. Species whose intraspecific competition is contest based are more vulnerable than those whose competition is scramble based. Contesters are especially sensitive when combined with density dependent dispersal. Species living in patches whose carrying capacity grows slowly are also susceptible to rapid shifts of environmental conditions. A complementary analytic approach further highlights the importance of intraspecific competition.  相似文献

Competition between contest and scramble strategists was examined using two strains of Callosobruchus maculatus, the contest strain (iQ) and the scramble strain (tQ). The direct larval interference experiment within each strain showed that the contest strain performed strong direct interference throughout its larval stage against the conspecific opponent(s). The scramble strain also performed its interference, but only during the 3rd and the 4th larval stages. The inter-strain larval competition experiments inside a large and small mung bean (Vigna radiata) showed that the contest strain was, in general, superior to the scramble strain in competition, but the competition results were density- and frequency-dependent. In the large beans, the proportion of adult emergence of the contest strain increased with the increase of its own initial density but decreased as the initial density of the scramble strain increased. The shape of the proportion of adult emergence became nonlinear in the small beans. The cause of the complexity of inter-strain competition results was discussed in the light of the difference in larval interference ability between the two strains.  相似文献

The seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus larvae exhibit two types of resource competition: scramble, in which a resource is shared, and contest, in which the resource is monopolized. This difference in larval behavior results in different adult densities. Under contest competition, adult density remains constant regardless of larval density, but under scramble competition, adult density increases with larval density. This in turn affects mating frequency during adulthood, and thus, the intensity of sexual selection operating on males. In this study, we examined the relationship between larval competition types and male reproductive investment in mating. We assessed the male ejaculate expenditure per mating across geographic strains of C. maculatus. The male investment (ejaculate expenditure) increased with the degree of scramble competition and decreased with the degree of contest competition. We therefore suggest that males experience different selective pressures depending on the type of larval competition: scramble type males are selected for increased reproductive investment.  相似文献

We analyze a general time-discrete mathematical model of single species population dynamics with the intraspecific density effect and the harvesting/thinning effect. We harvest a portion of the population at a moment in each year. We investigate the condition under which the harvesting/thinning causes an eventual increase of its population at the equilibrium, and show that such a paradoxical increase could occur for the discrete single species population dynamics with a large family of density effect functions. Some typical models are analyzed in detail according to the possibility of the paradox emergence. Our result implies that the contest competition would never cause the paradox, while the scramble competition would be likely to cause it.  相似文献

Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) is the most important insect pest in southern Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests. Tree mortality is hastened by the various fungal pathogens that are symbiotic with the beetles. The phenylpropanoid 4-allylanisole is an antifungal and semiochemical for some pine beetle species. We analyzed 4-allylanisole and monoterpene profiles in the xylem oleoresin from a total of 107 trees at six sites from two chemotypes of ponderosa pine found in Colorado and New Mexico using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Although monoterpene profiles were essentially the same in attacked and nonattacked trees, significantly lower levels of 4-allylanisole were found in attacked trees compared with trees that showed no evidence of attack for both chemotypes.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Variations in developmental conditions of bark beetles, particularly intraspecific competition, can induce morphological and physiological modifications in the offspring. It is hypothesised that intraspecific competition could also affect host selection behaviour. Such behavioural changes might be manifested in response to host (alpha-pinene) or beetle (verbenone) compounds.
2.  Ips pini were bred at different densities. The offspring were measured for size, weight, and lipid concentration, and then subjected to tunnelling bioassays in agar media amended with varying amounts of alpha-pinene or verbenone.
3. High parental colonisation densities reduced emergence time of parents and offspring. Increasing colonisation density and emergence time had a negative influence on offspring vigour, resulting in a reduction of the distance tunnelled by the beetles.
4. Both alpha-pinene and verbenone were repellent. Surprisingly, verbenone was also toxic at high concentrations, with its effect being greater on beetles arising from high densities. The repellent effect of these compounds did not vary according to colonisation density, but for both compounds, at a 1.5 mg g–1 concentration, it increased with emergence time.
5. The consequences of varying vigour and behaviour in relation to developmental conditions and emergence patterns on population dynamics of I. pini are discussed.  相似文献

Bark beetle outbreaks and wildfire are important disturbances in conifer ecosystems, yet their interactions are not well understood. We evaluated whether fire injury increased susceptibility of lodgepole pines (Pinus contorta) to mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins), how it influenced beetle reproductive success, and whether beetle population phase altered this interaction. Eight sites that experienced wildfire and eight unburned sites were examined in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (USA). Half were in areas where D. ponderosae was undergoing outbreaks, and half were in areas with low populations. We examined 2056 trees one year after fire for burn injury and beetle attack. We quantified beetle reproductive success in a random sample of 106 trees, and measured gallery areas of D. ponderosae and competing subcortical herbivores in 79 additional trees. Baited flight traps sampled stand-level populations of subcortical herbivores and predators. Wildfire predisposed trees to D. ponderosae attack, but nonlinearly, with moderately injured trees being most preferred. This tree-level interaction was influenced by stand-level beetle population size, in that both healthy and fire-injured trees of all classes were attacked where populations were high, but no healthy trees, and only low and moderately injured trees were killed where populations were low. The number of adult brood produced per female was likewise curvilinear, being highest in moderately injured trees. This reflected an apparent trade-off, with high intraspecific competition arising from the large number of beetles needed to overcome defenses in healthy trees, vs. high interspecific competition and low substrate quality in more injured trees. These results suggest that fire-injured trees can provide a reservoir for D. ponderosae during periods when populations are too low to overcome defenses of healthy trees, and might otherwise face localized extinction. However, the likelihood of populations increasing from endemic to outbreak levels in response to increased susceptibility is offset by the opposing constraints of lower substrate quality and higher competitor load in severely injured hosts, and the relative scarcity of moderately injured trees. Wildfire may confer some reproductive increases to populations already outbreaking. We present a conceptual model of how these disturbances and inherent feedbacks interact to affect beetle population dynamics.  相似文献

A mathematical function describing the various kinds of survivorship curve is formulated with the useful parameter, environmental capacity. Three types of the survivorship curve illlustrated byDeevey can be obtained from changing the value of this function. When a cohort is large and the competition occurs in the scramble type, this function shows the third type ofDeevy 's and this to the first type in the case of low density and the contest type of competition. We collected, identified, and quantified volatiles arising from individual gallery entrances of the monogamous bark beetle Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann. Samples were collected while the insects were mass attacking mature loblolly pines (Pinus taeda L.) in an established infestation in western Mississippi, 1 August through 3 October 2005. Following volatile sample collection, the entrances were dissected and categorized according to those that 1) contained a solitary female (the gallery initiating sex), 2) contained a pair that had not yet produced an egg gallery, 3) led to an egg gallery with niches and/or eggs, or 4) represented failed attacks (either abandoned or containing dead beetles). The greatest mean release rate of the female-produced aggregation pheromone components frontalin (74 ng/h) and trans-verbenol (0.35 microg/h) was detected from entrances of solitary females, whereas the highest mean quantities of the male-produced multifunctional pheromone components endo-brevicomin (18 ng/h) and verbenone (0.15 microg/h) were detected from entrances of preoviposition beetle pairs. Alpha-pinene, a host-produced monoterpene that functions as a synergist for the aggregation attractant for D. frontalis, was detected from entrances of solitary females and preoviposition pairs at a rate of 0.6 mg/h, or 3-4 orders of magnitude greater than the insect-produced components of the attractant. Our results indicate that the release rates of pheromone components used in published field studies of the chemical ecology of D. frontalis (generally > 0.1 mg/h) represent thousands of 'attack equivalents' or production rates on the scale of a beetle mass attack on a single host. Additionally, our data suggest that the loss in attractiveness of host tissue fully colonized by D. frontalis is because of the disappearance of attractants rather than an increase in inhibitors.  相似文献
