Reproductive performance in Ohio dairy herds in the 1990s   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The objective of this study was to evaluate trends in reproductive performance in Ohio dairy herds during the 1990s. Stringent criteria for herd inclusion were applied to DHI records to ensure high quality and reliability of the data. The final data set contained 44,425 monthly herd summary records from 1772 herds from years 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998. Outcomes of interest were calving interval length, calving-to-conception interval, days to first breeding, services per conception and first service conception rate. PROC MIXED in SAS (version 8.1) was used and the monthly records were treated as repeated measures nested within years and herds. First-order autoregressive covariance structure was used to model the covariance between the repeated measures within herds. The data were analyzed for the entire herd as well as for the first lactation cows separately. During the 1990s reproductive performance declined in Ohio dairy herds. Herd average calving interval lengthened from 13.6 to 14.1 months and calving-to-conception interval increased from 136 to 150 days between 1992 and 1998, respectively. Days to first service and number of services increased while first service conception rate declined on a herd level. The reproductive performance of first lactation cows, however, remained constant during this same period. Overall herd reproductive performance was associated with herd size and fat-corrected rolling herd average milk production (FCM). As milk yield increased, first service conception rate decreased and services per conception increased. Larger herds had lower first service conception rate and needed more services per conception, but they started breeding their cows earlier resulting in a slightly shorter calving interval and calving-to-conception interval compared to smaller herds.  相似文献

The overall reproductive performance has decreased over the last decades, involving changes in cyclicity, oestrous behaviour and fertility. High milk yield (MY), low body condition score (BCS) and large body condition (BC) loss have been identified as risk factors. However, these effects are often confounded, as high MY and body lipid reserve mobilization are correlated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the respective effects of MY and BC on post-partum ovarian cyclicity, oestrus and fertility of Holstein cows. This study provides novel information, as MY and BC change were uncoupled in the overall dataset that included 98 lactations and milk progesterone profiles. Cows were assigned to two feeding-level groups: high feed, which achieved high MY and moderate BC loss throughout lactation (8410 kg, -1.17 unit from calving to nadir BCS), and low feed, which limited MY and triggered a large BC loss (5719 kg, -1.54 unit). MY and BC had different effects at different stages of the reproductive process. Cyclicity as well as non-fertilization and early embryo mortality were mainly driven by body lipid reserves, whereas oestrous behaviour and late embryo mortality were related to MY. The results point to possible uncoupling between cyclicity, oestrus and early and late embryo survival allowing compensation along the reproductive process and leading to similar final reproductive performance. In compact calving systems, which require high pregnancy rates within a short period, higher MY strategies appear unsuitable even where BCS is maintained, owing to depressed oestrous behaviour and probably increased late embryo mortality, which delays rebreeding. Similarly, strategies that compromise cyclicity and fertility by excessively low BCS are unsuitable.  相似文献

The relationship between fatty liver and reproductive performance was investigated in a commercial herd of Guernsey dairy cattle. Forty-two cows were sampled by liver biopsy at 1 week after calving, and divided into two groups, a fatty liver and a non-fatty liver group, on the basis of the level of liver fat. The cows in the fatty liver group had a milk yield of 5267 kg and a calving interval of 428 days compared with 4407 kg and 369 days for the cows in the non-fatty liver group. The reduced fertility was associated with an elongation in the interval from calving to first service of 20 days and with a reduced conception rate. The occurrence of fatty liver significantly impaired the reproductive performance of the cows.  相似文献

Predicting the grass dry matter intake (GDMI), milk yield (MY) or milk fat and protein yield (milk solids yield (MSY)) of the grazing dairy herd is difficult. Decisions with regard to grazing management are based on guesstimates of the GDMI of the herd, yet GDMI is a critical factor influencing MY and MSY. A data set containing animal, sward, grazing management and concentrate supplementation variables recorded during weeks of GDMI measurement was used to develop multiple regression equations to predict GDMI, MY and MSY. The data set contained data from 245 grazing herds from 10 published studies conducted at Teagasc, Moorepark. A forward stepwise multiple regression technique was used to develop the multiple regression equations for each of the dependent variables (GDMI, MY, MSY) for three periods during the grazing season: spring (SP; 5 March to 30 April), summer (SU; 1 May to 31 July) and autumn (AU; 1 August to 31 October). The equations generated highlighted the importance of different variables associated with GDMI, MY and MSY during the grazing season. Peak MY was associated with an increase in GDMI, MY and MSY during the grazing season with the exception of GDMI in SU when BW accounted for more of the variation. A higher body condition score (BCS) at calving was associated with a lower GDMI in SP and SU and a lower MY and MSY in all periods. A higher BCS was associated with a higher GDMI in SP and SU, a higher MY in SU and AU and a higher MSY in all periods. The pre-grazing herbage mass of the sward (PGHM) above 4 cm was associated with a quadratic effect on GDMI in SP, on MY in SP and SU and on MSY in SU. An increase in daily herbage allowance (DHA) above 4 cm was associated with an increase in GDMI in AU, an increase in MY in SU and AU and MSY in AU. Supplementing grazing dairy cows with concentrate reduced GDMI and increased MY and MSY in all periods. The equations generated can be used by the Irish dairy industry during the grazing season to predict the GDMI, MY and MSY of grazing dairy herds.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of nutrition and management practices on reproductive performance in 31 Irish dairy herds participating in the Moorepark Dairy Management Information System (DairyMIS) during the period 1991-1998. Fifty variables relating to herd reproductive indices, calving events, stocking rate, disease, concentrate feeding, fertiliser usage, milk production and economic performance were studied using factor analysis. A factor analysis, followed by varimax rotation, identified 13 factors, which accounted for 83% of the total variance of the original variables. A regression model was used to predict calving rate from the orthogonal factor scores identified by factor analysis. Calving rate was defined as the proportion of services, for which an outcome was known, which resulted in a subsequent calving. Year, farm code and factor 3 (labelled herd size) together accounted for 40% of the observed variation in calving rate. The factor scores for factor 3 (herd size) were plotted against calving rate and because the plot was not linear, it was decided that dividing the factor scores into quartiles would produce a better fitting model. The factor scores for herd size were sorted and assigned to four equal categories (n = 47 per category), from lowest to highest. The ranges in herd size according to category were as follows: category 1 (34-96), category 2 (47-103), category 3 (66-152) and category 4 (108-359). The calving rate (%), (+/-S.E.) was 67.0 +/- 2.5 for category 1, 61.8 +/- 1.8 for category 2, 56.9 +/- 1.5 for category 3 and 53.2 +/- 2.85 for category 4. Using pair-wise comparisons, calving rates differed significantly (P < 0.05) between all categories except between categories 3 and 4 (P > 0.05). Herd-level milk production was not associated with calving rate indicating that good management may overcome any adverse effects of high milk production on reproductive performance. Larger herds, in combination with other associated herd characteristics, are likely to have poorer calving rates than medium or small herds.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the effect of neosporosis on productive and reproductive parameters in dairy cows. Cows (n=2743) from 94 farms located in the most important dairy areas in Costa Rica were used in the study. The size of the herds ranged from 32 to 379 females (mean=110, median=125). An indirect ELISA was used to determine the serostatus of the cows towards Neospora caninum. The effect of neosporosis on milk production was analysed by a mixed linear model. In addition, the effects on calving interval (days) and calving to conception interval (days) were analysed by survival analysis. The risk of abortion in relation to N. caninum serostatus was assessed by logistic regression, with herd as a random effect. Overall, 1185 of 2743 cows (43.3%) were seropositive for Neospora. Eighty-nine of 94 (94.7%) farms were classified as Neospora-seropositive. It was estimated that cows seronegative to Neospora produced an additional 84.7L of milk (P=0.6). Serostatus did not have a significant effect on the length of the calving interval in the Cox proportional hazard survival analysis (Hazard ratio=1.2, 95% CI: 0.9, 1.4). The logistic regression model had a weak positive association between serostatus and abortion (OR 1.7, 95% CI: 0.8, 3.9), but did not show a strong association between serostatus and the number of services per conception (OR=0.95, 95% CI: 0.7, 1.3). In conclusion, there were no significant effects of Neospora serostatus on production and reproductive performance in this study.  相似文献

This study was performed in two large dairy units (with 130 and 213 calving cows each) during one year. The objectives were to investigate 1) epidemiological patterns of main post-partum reproductive disorders (metritis, post-partum and post-service anestrus, repeat breeding and embryonic death) and 2) the impact of herd, calving season, milk yield and parity on these patterns. Approximately 20% of the cows in both herds were not affected by any of the disorders. Prevalence of metritis was high (32 to 44%) and appeared influenced by the herds' conditions interacting with calving months and milk yield effects. Cyclic post-partum anestrus incidence was also essentially affected by the herd effect with an added seasonal interaction. Other disorders in both herds were also primarily subjected to the seasonal effect. Individual milk yield and parity only marginally affected the epidemiological patterns. We concluded that even in similar environmental conditions, no general patterns of incidence of reproductive disorders can be drawn and that they are essentially dependent on the characteristics of each herd management.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate factors associated with resumption of postpartum estrous cycles and embryonic survival in lactating dairy cows. Holstein cows, 6396 from four dairy farms were evaluated to determine the relationships among parity, body condition score (BCS) at calving and at AI, season of year when cows calved, and milk yield on resumption of postpartum estrous cycles by 65 days postpartum, and all the previous variables, estrual or anestrus and AI protocol on conception rates and embryonic survival at the first postpartum insemination. Cows had their estrous cycle pre-synchronized with two PGF injections given 14 days apart and were inseminated between 69 and 82 days postpartum following either an estrous or ovulation synchronization protocol initiated 12–14 days after the presynchronization. Blood was sampled and analyzed for progesterone twice, 12–14 days apart, to determine whether cows had initiated onset of estrous cycles after calving. Cows were scored for body condition in the week after calving, and again at AI, between 69 and 82 days postpartum. Pregnancy was diagnosed at 30 ± 3 and 58 ± 3 days after AI. Farm influenced all reproductive outcomes evaluated. More (P < 0.0001) multiparous than primiparous cows had initiated estrous cycles. Onset of estrous cycles was also influenced (P < 0.01) by BCS at calving and at AI, BCS change, season, and milk yield. More (P < 0.001) cows that had initiated estrous cycles than anestrous cows were pregnant at 30 and 58 days after AI, but anestrus did not affect pregnancy loss. Conception rates were also influenced (P < 0.01) by parity, BCS at calving and AI, BCS change, and season; however, milk yield and insemination protocol were not associated with conception rates at 30 and 58 days after AI. Factors that reduced conception rate on day 30 after AI also increased pregnancy loss between 30 and 58 days of gestation. Improving BCS at calving and AI, minimizing losses of BCS after calving, and hastening onset of estrous cycles early postpartum are all expected to increase conception because of enhanced embryonic survival.  相似文献

Dairy farms in southern Norway were surveyed to obtain information regarding reproduction management in tied herds. A total of 1613 farms were included in the analyses. Reproductive performance during the main breeding period of the year (November 1 to February 28) was measured using the following dependent variables: calving to first service and last service interval, number of artificial inseminations per cow, non-return rate at 60 days, and calving interval. Culling for failure to conceive was found to be associated with longer calving to first service interval, more inseminations per cow and lower non-return rate. More inseminations per cow and lower non-return rate were also recorded in herds where breeding was close to calving. Oestrous checks late in the evening and frequent observations were associated with shorter calving to last service interval and shorter calving interval. Calving to last service interval was prolonged if the farmers were occupied with routine work while conducting oestrous checks. Manual rectal pregnancy testing was of little importance for reproductive efficiency in dairy herds with good breeding performance. More inseminations per cow occurred in herds where oestrous checks were conducted systematically 3 and 6 weeks after service. Calving to last service interval and calving interval were shorter when only one person was responsible for the herd breeding management.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify factors affecting variation in conception rate to first artificial inseminations (AI) (CR: number of pregnant cows on D80-100/inseminated cows) and the incidence of embryonic/foetal loss (LEM) between 21 and 80 days of pregnancy (number of cows non-pregnant on D80-100/pregnant on D21) in 44 low fertility dairy herds of the west-central region of France. Reproductive status was assessed using progesterone milk concentration on D0 = Day of AI and D21-24, plasma PSPB concentration on D30-35, rectal palpation on D80-100 and observed return to oestrous. The final data set contained 1285 Prim'Holstein cows, 5.0% (64/1285) were inseminated in the luteal phase (progesterone > or = 3 ng/ml on D0), 61.3% (787/1285) were pregnant on D21-24 (progesterone < 3 ng/ml on D0 and > or = 5 ng/ml on D21-24), 15.4% lost their embryo/foetus between D21-24 and D80-100 (198/1285) and 45.8% (589/1285) were pregnant on D80-100. The incidence of late embryonic/foetal loss (LEM) was 25.2% (198/787). Multivariate logistic regression models including the random herd effect were used to analyse the relationship between AI centre, AI sire, cow's sire, parity, interval between calving and AI, milk production, milk protein content, body condition score (BCS) on D0, season of calving, season of AI, estimated genetic index on CR and LEM incidence. CR was significantly related to parity (p < 0.05), milk production after calving (p < 0.05) and estimated genetic value (p < 0.01). A significant difference in CR was observed for calving to AI interval > or = 70 days versus > or = 90 days, but the overall effect of the interval was not significant (p = 0.11). LEM incidence was affected by period of AI (p < 0.05), milk production (p < 0.05) and BCS (p < 0.05), but was not related to estimated genetic index. In conclusion, in these low fertility herds, the incidence of LEM was high and 25% of the cows lost their embryo after 21 days of pregnancy. LEM was affected by specific factors (season, BCS), which were not related to CR. The absence of a relationship between estimated genetic index and LEM in spite of its effect on CR indicates that estimated genetic merit has a greater effect on early embryonic loss or fertilisation failure than on later stages of embryo development.  相似文献

Background

Overall reproductive performance of dairy herds is monitored by various indicators. Most of them do not consider all eligible animals and do not consider different management strategies at farm level. This problem can be alleviated by measuring the proportion of pregnant cows by specific intervals after their calving date or after a fixed time period, such as the voluntary waiting period. The aim of this study was to evaluate two reproductive performance indicators that consider the voluntary waiting period at the herd. The two indicators were: percentage of pregnant cows in the herd after the voluntary waiting period plus 30 days (PV30) and percentage of inseminated cows in the herd after the voluntary waiting period plus 30 days (IV30). We wanted to assess how PV30 and IV30 perform in a simulation of herds with different reproductive management and physiology and to compare them to indicators of reproductive performance that do not consider the herd voluntary waiting period.

Methods

To evaluate the reproductive indicators we used the SimHerd-program, a stochastic simulation model, and 18 scenarios were simulated. The scenarios were designed by altering the reproductive management efficiency and the status of reproductive physiology of the herd. Logistic regression models, together with receiver operating characteristics (ROC), were used to examine how well the reproductive performance indicators could discriminate between herds of different levels of reproductive management efficiency or reproductive physiology.

Results

The logistic regression models with the ROC analysis showed that IV30 was the indicator that best discriminated between different levels of management efficiency followed by PV30, calving interval, 200-days not-in calf-rate (NotIC200), in calf rate at100-days (IC100) and a fertility index. For reproductive physiology the ROC analysis showed that the fertility index was the indicator that best discriminated between different levels, followed by PV30, NotIC200, IC100 and the calving interval. IV30 could not discriminate between the two levels.

Conclusion

PV30 is the single best performance indicator for estimating the level of both herd management efficiency and reproductive physiology followed by NotIC200 and IC100. This indicates that PV30 could be a potential candidate for inclusion in dairy herd improvement schemes.  相似文献

A retrospective study involving 2756 pregnancies from two commercial dairy herds in northeastern Spain determined relationships between management, production and reproductive data, and high fertility (conception before 90 days in milk) in high-producing dairy cows. High fertility was registered in 989 (35.9%) cows. The following data were recorded for each animal: herd, repeated animal (cows included two or more times within the study in which data were obtained from different lactational periods), parity (primiparous versus multiparous), previous twinning, reproductive disorders following calving (retained placenta, primary metritis) and at postpartum gynecological examination (incomplete uterine involution, pyometra and ovarian cysts), days in milk at conception, previous estrous synchronization and season of calving and conception. In order to evaluate the possible effect of high production during the peak milk yield on subsequent fertility, daily milk production at Day 50 postpartum was also recorded and cows were classified as high (> or = 50 kg) and low (< 50 kg) producers. Logistic regression analysis indicated no significant effects of herd, repeated animal, previous twinning, reproductive disorders such as primary metritis, incomplete uterine involution, pyometra and ovarian cysts, previous estrous synchronization and season of calving and insemination. Based on the odds ratio, the likelihood of high fertility increased in high-producer cows by a factor of 6.8. High fertility was less likely for multiparous cows (by a factor of 0.35) and for cows suffering placenta retention (by a factor of 0.65). High fertile cows produced a mean of 49.5 kg milk at Day 50 postpartum, in contrast to that 43.2 kg milk of the remainder cows. These findings question the negative effect of high production on fertility. Our results indicated that high individual cow milk production can be positively related to high fertility.  相似文献

Cows in severe negative energy balance after calving have reduced fertility, mediated by metabolic signals influencing the reproductive system. We hypothesised that transition diet could alter metabolic status after calving, and thus influence fertility. Multiparous dairy cows were assigned to four transition groups 6 weeks pre-calving and fed: (a) basal control diet (n = 10); (b) basal diet plus barley (STARCH, n = 10); (c) basal diet plus Soypass (high protein, HiPROT, n = 11); or (d) no transition management (NoTRANS, n = 9). All cows received the same lactational diet. Blood samples, body weights and condition scores (BCS) were collected weekly. Fertility parameters were monitored using milk progesterone profiles and were not affected by transition diet. Data from all cows were then combined and analysed according to the pattern of post-partum ovarian activity. Cows with low progesterone profiles had significantly lower insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin concentrations accompanied by reduced dry matter intakes (DMIs), BCS and body weight. Cows with prolonged luteal activity (PLA) were older and tended to have lower IGF-I. Analysis based on the calving to conception interval revealed that cows which failed to conceive (9/40) also had reduced IGF-I, BCS and body weight. Fertility was, therefore, decreased in cows which were in poor metabolic status following calving. This was reflected in reduced circulating IGF-I concentrations and compromised both ovarian activity and conception. There was little effect of the transition diets on these parameters.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of reproductive performance on profitability and optimal breeding decisions for Finnish dairy herds. We used a dynamic programming model to optimize dairy cow insemination and replacement decisions. This optimization model maximizes the expected net revenues from a given cow and her replacements over a decision horizon. Input values and prices reflecting the situation in 1998 in Finland were used in the study. Reproductive performance was reflected in the model by overall pregnancy rate, which was a function of heat detection and conception rate. Seasonality was included in conception rate. The base run had a pregnancy rate of 0.49 (both heat detection and conception rate of 0.7). Different scenarios were modeled by changing levels of conception rate, heat detection, and seasonality in fertility. Reproductive performance had a considerable impact on profitability of a herd; good heat detection and conception rates provided an opportunity for management control. When heat detection rate decreased from 0.7 to 0.5, and everything else was held constant, net revenues decreased approximately 2.6%. If the conception rate also decreased to 0.5 (resulting in a pregnancy rate of 0.25), net revenues were approximately 5% lower than with a pregnancy rate of 0.49. With lower fertility, replacement percentage was higher and the financial losses were mainly from higher replacement costs. Under Finnish conditions, it is not optimal to start breeding cows calving in spring and early summer immediately after the voluntary waiting period. Instead, it is preferable to allow the calving interval to lengthen for these cows so that their next calving is in the fall. However, cows calving in the fall should be bred immediately after the voluntary waiting period. Across all scenarios, optimal solutions predicted most calvings should occur in fall and the most profitable time to bring a replacement heifer into a herd was in the fall. It was economically justifiable to keep breeding high producing cows longer than low producing cows.  相似文献

Effects on reproduction in a total of 135 dairy cows managed for calving intervals of 12, 15 or 18 months (72, 38 and 25 cows respectively) were studied. The cows were of the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) and the Swedish Freisian Breed (SLB) and were housed in 2 different herds with 3 different management systems (tied, loose, and tied but milked in a milking parlour; mixed). The cows in one of the herds (48 cows) were assigned for milking either 2 times or 3 times a day. When comparing conception rate at 1st insemination (AI) and the percentage of cows finally pregnant, we found no significant differences between the 3 calving interval groups, however, a tendency for a higher conception rate with a 15 months' interval compared with a 12 months' interval was found in one of the herds (50% vs 41.5%). The percentage of finally pregnant animals varied between 81% and 100%, but this variation was mainly attributed to the herd rather than calving interval group. A significantly higher percentage of cows was treated for anoestrous in the 12-month group than in the 15-month group in one of the herds (28.6% vs. 5.3%). The frequency of ovulations with external heat signs increased with ovulation number up to the 4th ovulation and thereafter remained stable. No significant difference was found in number of AIs required per conception with respect to calving intervals, breeds, or milking frequency groups. However, cows milked 3 times a day had a significantly longer interval from the 1 st AI to conception compared with cows milked 2 times a day (45.8 days vs 17.6 days, p<.01). Cows kept loose exhibited 1st ovulatory oestrous, approximately 2 weeks earlier (55.9 days vs 69.7 days, p<.05) than their herd mates kept tied. In conclusion, our study shows that lengthening the calving interval to 15 or 18 months may have a positive influence on reproduction in terms of less need for treatments of ovarian disorders and higher conception rates. Dairy herd size is expected to increase in many European countries, given the recent policy changes within the European Union. Managing more cows may have implications for herd performance in the post-quota era. The objective of this study was to characterise spring-calving herds according to size and rate of expansion, and to determine trends in breeding policy, reproduction and production performance, which will inform industry of the likely implications of herd expansion. Performance data from milk recording herds comprising 775,795 lactations from 2,555 herds for the years 2004 to 2008 inclusive were available from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. Herds were classified into Small (average of 37 cows), Medium (average of 54 cows) and Large (average of 87 cows) and separately into herds that were not expanding (Nil expansion), herds expanding on average by three cows per year (Slow expansion) and herds expanding on average by eight cows per year (Rapid expansion). There was no association between rate of expansion and 305-day fat and protein yield. However, 305-day milk yield decreased and milk protein and fat percentage increased with increasing rate of expansion. There were no associations between herd size and milk production except for protein and fat percentage, which increased with increasing herd size. Average parity number of the cows decreased as rate of expansion increased and tended to decrease as herd size increased. In rapidly expanding herds, cow numbers were increased by purchasing more cattle. The proportion of dairy sires relative to beef sires used in the breeding programme of expanding herds increased and there was more dairy crossbreeding, albeit at a low rate. Similarly, large herds were using more dairy sires and fewer beef sires. Expanding herds and large herds had superior reproductive performance relative to non-expanding and small herds. Animals in expanding herds calved for the first time at a younger age, had a shorter calving interval and were submitted for breeding by artificial insemination at a higher rate. The results give confidence to dairy producers likely to undergo significant expansion post-quota such that, despite managing more cows, production and reproductive performance need not decline. The management skills required to achieve these performance levels need investigation.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study a new mathematical model based on dynamic indexes designed to evaluate reproductive efficiency in dairy herds and to correlate the new index with the body condition score (BCS) in order to evaluate the reproductive state of the cows post partum. Four groups of dairy cows were used: 1) loose-housed Italian Friesian (loose Friesian, n = 190); 2) stanchioned Italian Friesian (stanchioned Friesian, n = 121); 3) stanchioned Italian Simmental (stanchioned Simmental, n = 120); and 4) loose-housed selected Italian Friesian cows (BCS test, n = 117). The first 3 herds were used to develop the new mathematical model while the fourth was used to correlate the method with the BCS. The new model was developed from the analysis of progesterone (P4) concentrations in whey and the frequency distribution of the cows in 3 reproductive states: cyclicity, acyclicity and pregnancy. The frequency distribution generated 3 curves, the intersections of which form a closed area. The barycenter of this closed area gives a simple static representation of the reproductive efficiency of each herd. We also studied the movement of the barycenter with time (dynamic index) for each reproductive status curve. The dynamic index allowed for evaluation of the reproductive efficiency of a group of cows at 40 d after calving, by analyzing the evolution of the different reproductive states post partum. A reproductive index called Cycle Time was characterized in a 240-d period of observation as the interval needed to bring all the animals from acyclic to pregnant status. The loose Friesian cows had the best reproductive efficiency. The BCS test was used to divide cows into 3 groups depending on the percentage loss of BCS due to the negative energy balance at 30 d post partum. Cows which lost more than 20% in BCS had the lowest reproductive efficiency. The following protocol was devised to monitor herds in order to identify cows that were likely to have reproductive problems: 1) measure BCS 10 d before calving; 2) monitor progesterone in whey starting 5 d after calving; 3) measure BCS 30 d after calving; 4) isolate cows that lost more than 20% of BCS; 5) measure progesterone only in the cows that lose more than 20% of BCS; 6) activate appropriate feeding strategies to help prevent excessive mobilization of body fat reserves.  相似文献

The effect of a routine postpartum intrauterine infusion of 50 to 100 ml 2 % polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) -iodine solution on the reproductive performance of dairy cows was investigated in field trials. At a regular herd visit, alternate cows (n = 531) at around one month after calving (maximum 50 and minimum 20) were treated in utero with PVP-iodine. Additional cows (n = 474) were left untreated or were infused in utero with physiological saline and served as controls. The first service conception rate, overall conception rate within 180 d after calving, and average interval in days from parturition to conception were 48.5 and 74.5 %, 98 ± 36 d in the treated group and 54.9 and 75.9 %, 90 ± 34 d in the controls. Thus, the routine postpartum treatment with 2 % PVP-iodine solution was not effective in improving the reproductive efficiency of cows. The results were nearly the same in all groups, across herd, year of trial, parity, interval from parturition to treatment and dose of PVP-iodine solution. Besides, for cows with endometritis, an intrauterine infusion of PVP-iodine solution was not only ineffective but it was detrimental to fertility.  相似文献

The objective was to evaluate if uterine sampling by low-volume uterine lavage, done shortly before the end of the voluntary waiting period, affected reproductive performance, milk production, or culling. Approximately 20 cows (40 and 60 d postpartum) were sampled in each of 38 herds (total, 752 cows), whereas all remaining cows concurrently between 40 and 60 d were a non-sampled reference cohort (n = 2,252 cows). There was an interaction between parity and sampling for first-service conception, calving to conception interval, and milk production. When stratified by parity, there was a tendency for impaired reproductive performance in sampled primiparous cows compared with non-sampled primiparous cows (Odds Ratio for pregnancy to first-service = 0.78 (95% C.I. 0.58-1.04). The Hazard Ratio for pregnancy in sampled primiparous cows was 0.89 (95% C.I. 0.77-1.04) compared to non-sampled primiparous cows. Sampling did not affect first-service conception rate (Odds Ratio for pregnancy Odds ratio (OR) for pregnancy = 1.03; 95% C.I. 0.80-1.33) or calving-to conception interval in multiparous cows (Hazard Ratio = 1.04; 95% C.I. 0.91-1.18). Sampling did not affect culling risk (Hazard Ratio HR = 0.92; 95% C.I. 0.77-1.11) after accounting for covariates. After stratification by parity, milk production was not affected by sampling except in fourth- and fifth-parity cows where sampled cows produced more milk than non-sampled cows after controlling for first test-day milk production and days-postpartum at first test-day. In conclusion, sampling by low-volume uterine lavage did not have significant detrimental effects on reproduction, culling, or milk production. However, there was a tendency for lower first-service conception in sampled primiparous cows, but the procedure appeared to be benign in multiparous cows.  相似文献
