Low pasture allowance during gestation affects ewes’ BW at parturition, the bond with their lamb, lamb development, and thus also may affect their responses to weaning. The objectives were to determine if native pasture allowance from before conception until late pregnancy affects ewe–lamb behaviours at lambing, ewes’ milk yield, lambs’ BW, and the behavioural and physiological changes of ewes and lambs at weaning. From 23 days before conception until 122 days of pregnancy, 24 ewes grazed on two different native pasture allowances: high (10 to 12 kg of dry matter (DM)/100 kg of BW per day; HPA treatment; n=12) or low (5 to 8 kg of DM/100 kg of BW per day; LPA treatment; n=12). Thereafter, all ewes grazed on Festuca arundinacea and received rice bran and crude glycerine. Ewes’ body condition score (BCS) and BW were recorded during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Milk yield was determined on days 32, 41 and 54 after lambing. Lambs’ BW was recorded from birth until 72 days after lambing. Latency from parturition until the ewe licked her lamb, maternal behaviour score (a test that evaluates maternal attachment to the lamb) and latency for lamb to stand up and suckle were determined. The behaviour of the lambs and ewes was recorded before and after weaning (at 65 days). The ewes’ serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The HPA ewes presented greater BW (P<0.005) and BCS (P<0.005) than the LPA ewes during pregnancy and postpartum (P<0.04), and had a greater milk yield than the LPA ewes (P<0.03). Treatments did not influence any behaviour at lambing, lambs’ BW, neither the ewes’ behavioural and physiological changes at weaning. HPA lambs paced and vocalized more than LPA lambs (P<0.0001). The variation of albumin concentration before and after weaning was greater in the HPA lambs than in the LPA lambs (P<0.0001). In conclusion, although ewes’ BW, BCS and milk production were affected by pasture allowance until late pregnancy, this did not affect the behaviours that lead to the establishment of the mother–young bond, nor the ewes’ behavioural responses at weaning. Lambs reared by ewes that grazed on low pasture allowance during pregnancy presented fewer behavioural changes and a lower decrease of albumin concentration after weaning. Lambs’ BW was not affected by the feeding received by their mothers.  相似文献

The use of mid prepartum shearing has been described as a possible tool to increase the weight of the lambs at birth and at weaning. The effect of prepartum shearing (53 days of gestation) on production and chemical composition of milk, weight of the lambs at birth and weaning and growth rate were evaluated in this trial. Twenty Polwarth ewes were inseminated with rams of the same breed in May (autumn), 2009. All ewes bore singletons and were maintained together under cultivated grazing conditions, during the experimental period. The ewes were allocated to two treatments groups, based on expected day of parturition, body weight and BCS of the dams. Ten ewes were shorn at 53 days of gestation (S53) and 10 ewes were kept unshorn during gestation (US). Milking of the ewes was recorded 7 days after parturition, and this was repeated weekly for 15 weeks. Milk production of the S53 ewes was 22.2% higher (P < 0.05), when compared to US control ewes - with no change in the milk composition. At lambing, the lambs born to the S53 ewes were 1.41 kg (P < 0.05), and at weaning 4.5 kg heavier (P < 0.05), than lambs born to US ewes. In conclusion, it can be said that the higher weaning weight of the S53 lambs was the result of both a higher birth weight and an increased growth rate up to weaning in part, due to an improved milk production of the ewes.  相似文献

Twenty-four Rambouillet ewe lambs (average weight=43.7+/-1.2 kg, approximately 6 months of age) were used to examine the effect of thyroid suppression before the onset of puberty on serum thyroid hormones, body weights (BW), and reproductive performance. Beginning in early September, ewe lambs were randomly assigned to three treatments (n=8 lambs/treatment). All animals remained in a single pen (4 x 12 m) with access to salt, water, shade and alfalfa hay (2.5 kg per animal per day) throughout the experiment. Beginning on Day 0 (first day of treatment), all ewe lambs received daily treatments (gavage) for 15 days consisting of 0, 20, or 40 mg 6-N-propyl-2-thiouracil(PTU)/kg BW per day. Beginning on Day 15, the 20 and 40 mg treatments were lowered to 10 and 20 mg PTU/kg BW, respectively. All animals were treated for 28 days. Ovarian cyclicity was determined by twice weekly progesterone (P(4)) analysis. Thyroxine (T(4)) concentrations were similar on Day 0 (61.6, 54.8 and 56.9+/-2.5 ng/ml, P=0.17) in ewe lambs receiving 0, 20 and 40 mg PTU/kg BW, respectively. By Day 7, both PTU-treated groups had T(4) values less than 20 ng/ml (9.0 and 15.4+/-2.5 ng/ml) compared with 78.5 ng/ml in controls (P<0.01). By 7 days after termination of PTU treatment, serum T(4) had risen to 29.1 and 26.9 (+/-2.9)ng/ml in the 20/10 and 40/20 PTU groups, respectively. On Day 66, control ewes had 55.0 ng T(4)/ml compared with 43.1 and 39.0 (+/-2.6 ng/ml) for ewes in the 20/10 and 40/20 groups, respectively (linear, P<0.01). Serum triiodothyronine (T(3)) followed a similar pattern to that observed for T(4). Ewe lamb BW were similar (P>0.50) among groups throughout the treatment period. However, following the treatment, PTU-treated ewes tended (P<0.10) to weigh less than controls. Average Julian day of puberty was also similar (P>0.50) among treatments (286, 288 and 288+/-5 days; control, 20/10 and 40/20, respectively). Control ewes had a pregnancy rate of 75%, while both PTU-treated groups had pregnancy rates of 88% (P>0.20). The administration of PTU resulted in a rapid decline in serum T(4) and T(3) but neither time of puberty nor pregnancy rates were affected by lowered thyroid hormones.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of buserelin or saline treatment on ovarian function (Experiment 1), plasma PGFM concentrations and oxytocin stimulated prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) release (Experiment 2) in ewe lambs and ewes. Welsh Halfbred ewes (n=26) and ewe lambs (n=24) were mated to vasectomised rams at synchronised oestrus and on Day 12 post-mating each animal was injected intramuscularly either normal saline or 4 microg buserelin. In Experiment 1, plasma progesterone and oestradiol concentrations were determined in samples collected by jugular venepuncture 1h before and at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment (n=7 per treatment group). Progesterone concentrations increased (P<0.05) from 2 to 8h after buserelin treatment and returned to basal levels after 72 h, whereas oestradiol concentrations were maximal at 2h post-treatment and returned to basal levels after 24h (P<0.05). Oestradiol concentrations were lower (P<0.05) in buserelin-treated animals than controls at 72 h post-treatment. Basal and post-treatment progesterone concentrations were greater (P<0.05) in ewes than in ewe lambs but oestradiol levels were similar for both age groups. Ovulation rate, determined by laparoscopy on Day 14, was similar for both age groups (ewes 1.1; ewe lambs 1.0). Buserelin treatment induced accessory corpora lutea in ewes (4/7; 57%) but not in ewe lambs (0/7; 0%). In the Experiment 2, plasma PGFM concentrations were determined in samples collected at 20-min intervals for 6h on Day 14 and at 20-min intervals for 1h before and at 10-min intervals for 1h and then at 20-min intervals for a further 3h period after an intravenous injection of oxytocin (1IU/kg body weight) on Day 15 post-oestrus. In this experiment there were five ewe lambs and six ewes per treatment group. There was no effect of buserelin treatment or age on basal PGFM concentrations on either Day 14 or 15. Although peak PGFM concentrations tended to be lower in buserelin-treated animals, the difference was not significant (P>0.05). However, peak duration following oxytocin challenge on Day 15 post-mating was shorter (P<0.05) in control ewes compared with control ewe lambs. In conclusion, buserelin treatment given on Day 12 post-oestrus enhances luteal function more in ewes than ewe lambs and after a transitory increase, reduces oestradiol concentrations in both ewes and ewe lambs. However, buserelin treatment does not significantly attenuate the luteolytic signal.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in consecutive years in which recently (Experiment 1) or temporarily (Experiment 2) weaned ewes and matched post-partum non-lactating flockmates (DRY) were exposed to a stimulus group of rams and oestrous ewes (10 and 20 in Experiment 1, 20 and 20 in Experiment 2) for 28 days in spring. Lactating ewes (n = 130) in Experiment 1 were isolated from their lambs 4 (W-4), 2 (W-2), 1 (W-1) or 0 (W-0) days in advance and exposed along with a group of 32 DRY flockmates. Lactating ewes in Experiment 2 (n = 230) were allocated to an unreplicated factorial of two levels of temporary weaning before stimulation (B0: control; B24: lambs removed 24 h before stimulation) by four levels of ewe-lamb contact imposed at the start of the stimulation (A0: control; A12, A24 and A36: lamb-ewe separation during the initial 12, 24 or 36 h of exposure); DRY ewes (n = 54) acted as an augmented factorial control. Oestrus (rump marks) and ovulation (laparoscopy on day 5 and on day 28 (Experiment 1) or day 32 (Experiment 2)) were recorded. Ovulation and oestrous responses in Experiment 1 were similar for DRY (90.6% and 55.2%, respectively) and recently weaned ewes (83.8% and 53.7%, respectively). Amongst recently weaned ewes, the immediate ovulation response to the rams and the proportion of ewes still cycling by day 28 tended to be lower (P = 0.065 and P = 0.011) in ewes weaned on the day of ram exposure (71.9% and 54.8% v. 87.8% and 80.0%, respectively). Ovulation rate was lower (P < 0.003) in W-2 ewes (1.3 ± 0.10) than in the other recently weaned groups. In Experiment 2, ovulation (83.3%) and oestrous (68.9%) responses in DRY ewes were higher (P = 0.022 and P = 0.053, respectively) than in lactating ewes (66.2% and 51.0%, respectively). More ewes ovulated (P = 0.036) in B24 (70.5%) than in B0 (61.8%). Ewes having their lambs returned 12 h after the onset of stimulation (A12) had poorer ovulation responses (54.9%) than control ewes (A0, 72.9%, P < 0.05); this was probably associated to lamb restitution after the sunset. Main conclusions were that (i) the presence of the lambs is a depressing factor of both ovulation and oestrous responses to the ram effect in lactating ewes, (ii) the ovulation response of lactating ewes will probably benefit from removing lambs for a period of 24 h before the onset of stimulation, (iii) until additional information becomes available, temporary weaning protocols should be designed avoiding lamb restitution during the night.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of crossbreeding Awassi ewes with either Charollais or Romanov sires, on pre-weaning lamb production as reflected by reproductive performance and milk production in the ewes. Two hundred and five, 3- to 6-year-old multiparous ewes of three breeds were allocated to three groups [Awassi (A; n = 56), F1 Romanov × Awassi (RA; n = 78) and F1 Charollais × Awassi (CA; n = 71)]. Upon lambing, ewes and their offspring were placed in a large pen in which they remained until the end of the trial. Body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) of the ewes and the BW of the lambs were recorded weekly from birth to weaning at 70 days of age. Milk production was recorded weekly from parturition to weaning. Pregnancy rates were not influenced by breed-type. Multiple births and the fecundity of ewes were greater (P < 0.05) in the RA group, compared to the A and CA groups—while the weaning percentage was similar between the breeds. Lamb birth and weaning weights were similar, while the kg lamb born per kg ewe lambed was greater (P < 0.05) in the RA group, compared to the CA group. The CA ewes recorded a higher BW (P < 0.01) and BCS (P < 0.01) than the other breed groups. Awassi ewes produced more milk (P < 0.01) throughout the observation period. Milk ash percentage was higher (P < 0.05) in the CA group, while the percentage of crude protein and dry matter was similar for the different groups. Results of the present study indicate that crossbreeding of Awassi ewes with Charollais and Romanov breeds decreased milk production in the progeny, without affecting lamb growth. The crossbreeding of Awassi with Charollais resulted in improved BW and BCS, while the crossbreeding of Awassi ewes with Romanov resulted in improved reproductive performance of the crossbreds. Crossbreeding Awassi ewes with exotic rams can thus be conducted to increase the number of lambs produced per ewe.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the BW and immune status of lambs reared under natural conditions or under artificial conditions fed two different colostrum amounts. In this study, 60 lambs were randomly divided into groups according to treatment. Twenty lambs remained with their dams (natural rearing (NR) group). Forty lambs were removed from their dams at birth. Lambs were bottle-fed with a pool of sheep colostrum, receiving either 4 g of IgG/kg of BW at birth (C4 group) or 8 g of IgG/kg of BW at birth (C8 group). The total colostrum amount was equally divided into three meals at 2, 14 and 24 h after birth. After this period, lambs were bottle-fed a commercial milk replacer. Blood plasma sample analysis and BW recordings were carried out before feeding at birth and then at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 20 days after birth. Another blood sample analysis and BW recording was carried out when animals reached 10 kg of BW. During weaning (30 days), sampling was carried out every 5 days. Blood plasma was used to determine the concentrations of IgG and IgM and the complement system activity – total and alternative pathways. The NR group showed greater BW than the C4 and C8 groups during milk feeding period, whereas the C4 and C8 groups had greater BW than the NR group at the end of weaning period. The C8 and NR groups had greater plasma IgG and IgM concentrations than the C4 group during milk feeding period. In addition, C4 and C8 groups showed similar IgG concentrations and greater IgM concentrations than the NR group at the end of the weaning period. Complement system activity was greater in the NR group than in the C4 and C8 groups during the first 3 days after birth. In conclusion, lambs fed amounts of colostrum equivalent to 8 g of IgG/kg of BW showed similar immune variables compared to lambs reared under natural conditions, obtaining a greater BW at the end of the weaning period. Nevertheless, this study shows that not only the colostrum amount but also the management during the milk feeding and weaning period, such as stress produced by dam separation, milk quality and suckling frequency, can affect the final immune status of lambs.  相似文献

Eighty-four nulliparous ewes were used to examine the effect of short-term insulin treatment on feed intake and reproductive performance. Following estrus synchronization, ewes were observed for estrus (= Day 0) and were penned individually beginning on Day 7. Ewes were fed twice daily and feed intake was recorded. On Days 9 through 13, ewes were treated s.c. with 1 IU/kg BW insulin (n = 44) or an equivalent volume of saline (n = 40). On Day 14, ewes were placed with fertile rams and number of ewes in estrus (bred) was recorded. Thirty days post-breeding, ewes were checked for pregnancy via ultrasonography. Feed intake and percentage of ewes in estrus did not differ between saline- and insulin-treated ewes. Similarly, neither pregnancy rate (69 +/- 8.7% vs. 80 +/- 8.1%, respectively) nor lambing rate (61 +/- 8.9% vs. 78 +/- 8.4%, respectively) differed between treatments. The number of lambs born per ewe was, however influenced by a breed-group effect (P < 0.0002). Romanov ewes had more (P < 0.001) lambs than the other breed groups in the study. Therefore, treating well-nourished, nulliparous ewe lambs with insulin did not increase reproductive efficiency, possibly because the ewes were already at a maximal nutritional and/or reproductive state.  相似文献

The research has shown the interesting contributions of shearing in mid-gestation on the performance of lambs from birth to weaning. Other studies have reported that shearing at early pregnancy influences the development of the placenta and lamb live weight at birth. However, there was a lack of information on the effect of early-prepartum shearing on the behavior of the offspring from weaning onward. This study evaluated the effect of shearing ewes at 50 days of gestation on the growth, reproductive behavior and response to a gastrointestinal parasite challenge in the female offspring from weaning to 18 months old. Fifty-seven Polwarth female lambs were used, 22 being singles and 35 twins born to ewes either shorn at 50 days of pregnancy (PS, n = 23) or shorn at 62 days postpartum (U, control, n = 34) resulting in four subgroups: single lambs born to PS ewes (n = 8), born to U ewes (n = 14), twin lambs born to PS ewes (n = 15) or born to U ewes (n = 20). All progeny were managed together under improved pasture with a minimum forage allowance of 6% live weight on dry basis. Body weight, body condition score and fecal eggs count were recorded every 14 days from weaning to 18 months of age. Concentrations of progesterone were measured weekly (from 4 to 10 months of age and from 14 to 18 months of age) to establish the onset of puberty. Ovulation rate at an induced and a natural heat (545 ± 1.0 and 562 ± 1.0 day old) was recorded. Prepartum shearing did not affect the age at puberty or the ovulation rate of female offspring, but those born as singles were more precocious ( P = 0.03) and heavier ( P = 0.02) at puberty than twin born lambs. Both the average value of parasite egg count ( P = 0.0 7) and the Famacha index ( P = 0.02) for the entire study period were lower in lambs born to prepartum shorn ewes than those born to postpartum shorn ewes. In conclusion, shearing at 50 days of gestation did not affect the growth or the reproductive behavior of female offspring. However, female lambs born from ewe shorn during gestation showed a better response to the parasitic challenge, and further research is required to confirm this.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in using sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) to feed sheep, but it contains proanthocyanidins (PACs), and the associated effects of PAC on sheep production are not well-known. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of the presence of PAC from sainfoin, through the inclusion of polyethylene glycol (PEG), on the intake and productive parameters of local ewes bearing one male lamb. For the experiment, 20 ewes and their newborn male lambs were placed in individual indoor cages. All ewes were fed ad libitum fresh sainfoin plus 200 g/d barley. Twice daily, half of the ewes were orally dosed with only water (Sainfoin Group; n = 10), and the other half were orally dosed with 100 g/d PEG 4000 per ewe (Sainfoin + PEG Group; n = 10). Sucking lambs were permanently housed with their dams until they reached 10–12 kg BW. The intake of sainfoin was recorded daily, and its chemical composition was analysed. Weekly, the BW, body condition score (BCS), milk yields and individual milk and blood samples were recorded. At the beginning and end of the experiment, faecal samples were collected from ewes and analysed for the anthelmintic role of PAC. The chemical composition, polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity of the diet and milk were analysed. The presence of PAC did not affect the intake, BW, BCS or milk yield of the dams (P > 0.05); however, all parameters were affected by the week of lactation (P < 0.05). Milk components were affected by the week of lactation (P < 0.001), but only the polyphenol and urea contents were reduced in the presence of PAC (P < 0.01). Similarly, the presence of PAC decreased the plasma urea concentration (P < 0.01) without effect on the rest of metabolites, polyphenols and antioxidant activity (P > 0.05). The presence of PAC had no effect on parasitism (P > 0.05). In conclusion, the presence of PAC had no relevant effects on milk production, although it affected protein metabolism, as indicated by the urea contents in milk and plasma.  相似文献

In ewe lambs, acceleration of growth and accumulation of both muscle and fat leads to earlier sexual maturity and better reproductive performance. The next stage in the development of this theme is to test whether these aspects of growth in young ewes affect milk production in their first lactation and the growth of their first progeny. We studied 75 young Merino ewes that had known phenotypic values for depth of eye muscle (EMD) and fat (FAT), and known Australian Sheep Breeding Values for post-weaning weight (PWT) and depths of eye muscle (PEMD) and fat (PFAT). They lambed for the first time at 1 year of age. Their lambs were weighed weekly from birth to weaning at 10 weeks to determine live weight gain and weaning weight. Progeny birth weight was positively associated with live weight gain and weaning weight (P<0.001). The PWT of the mothers was positively associated with birth weight (P<0.01), live weight gain and weaning weight of the progeny (P<0.05); however, these progeny traits were not influenced by EMD, FAT, PEMD, PFAT of the mothers (P>0.05). The PWT of the sire was positively associated with live weight gain (P<0.05) and weaning weight of the progeny (P<0.01). At around day 20 postpartum, we measured milk production and milk composition (fat, protein, lactose, total solids). Milk production was influenced positively by birth type (single or twin; P<0.05) and negatively by birth weight (P<0.05), but not by mother phenotype or genotype, sire genotype of the mother or the sex of the progeny (P>0.05). The concentrations of fat, protein, lactose and total solids in the milk were not affected by the phenotype or genotype of the mothers or of the sires of the mothers, or by the sex of the progeny (P>0.05). We conclude that selection of young Merino ewes for better growth, and more rapid accumulation of muscle and fat, will lead to progeny that are heavier at birth, grow faster and are heavier at weaning. Moreover, milk production and composition do not seem to be affected by the genetic merit of the mother for post-weaning live weight or PEMD or PFAT. Therefore, Merino ewes can lamb at 1 year of age without affecting the production objectives of the Merino sheep industry.  相似文献

After parturition (Day 0), 31 mature spring-lambing, fine-wool ewes were randomly allotted to one of six groups. Treatments were lambs suckled (one or two) and ovine growth hormone (oGH; 0, 5 or 10 mg). Growth hormone was administered subcutaneously daily from Days 6 to 25. Milk characteristics were determined on Day 26. Ewes were observed for estrus beginning on Day 27. Serum insulin did not differ (P > 0.10) between suckling intensity before or after oGH treatment on Days 6, 15 or 25. Likewise, no difference (P > 0.10) in serum insulin was detected among ewes receiving 0, 5 or 10 mg oGH. Ewes suckling twins had higher (P < 0.05) serum growth hormone on Day 6 (before beginning oGH treatment) than ewes suckling single lambs. In ewes receiving 0, 5 and 10 mg oGH, serum growth hormone differed (P < 0.01) in a linear fashion 1 h after treatment was initiated on Day 6 and continued through Hour 6. Serum growth hormone on Days 15 and 25 differed among groups both before and after oGH was administered (P < 0.01). Suckling intensity did not affect (P > 0.10) milk or milk protein and fat yields; however, oGH increased (linear, P < 0.05) fat but did not affect milk or protein yields. Interval from parturition to estrus did not differ (P > 0.20) in ewes suckling single or twin offspring. Likewise, no differences (P > 0.20) in interval length were noted in ewes receiving 0, 5 or 10 mg oGH. Suckling intensity and oGH administration for 20 d had little effect on postpartum interval or milk characteristics during the first 30 d after lambing in fine-wool ewes.  相似文献

Vitamin E and selenium have been reported to improve immune function across a range of species. Ewes lambing on poor-quality dry pasture in autumn in Western Australia are at risk of being deficient in vitamin E and selenium at lambing thus predisposing their lambs to deficiencies and increasing the risk of infection and disease. This study tested the hypotheses that (i) supplementation of autumn-lambing ewes with vitamin E plus selenium in late gestation will increase the concentrations of vitamin E and selenium in plasma in the ewe and lamb and (ii) that the increased concentrations of vitamin E and selenium in plasma in the lambs will improve their innate and adaptive immune responses and thus survival. Pregnant Merino ewes were divided into a control group (n=58) which received no supplementation or a group supplemented with vitamin E plus selenium (n=55). On days 111, 125 and 140 of pregnancy ewes in the vitamin E plus selenium group were given 4 g all-rac-α-tocopherol acetate orally. On day 111 the ewes were also given 60 mg of selenium as barium selenate by subcutaneous injection. The concentrations of α-tocopherol and selenium were measured in ewes and/or lambs from day 111 of pregnancy to 14 weeks of age±10 days (weaning). Immune function of the lamb was assessed by analysing the numbers and phagocytic capacities of monocytes and polymorphonuclear leucocytes and plasma IgG and anti-tetanus toxoid antibody concentrations between birth and 14 weeks of age±10 days. Maternal supplementation with vitamin E plus selenium increased the concentration of α-tocopherol in plasma (1.13 v. 0.67 mg/l; P<0.001) and selenium in whole blood (0.12 v. 0.07 mg/l; P<0.01) of the ewes at lambing compared with controls. Supplementation also increased the concentration of α-tocopherol (0.14 v. 0.08 mg/l; P<0.001) and selenium (0.08 v. 0.05 mg/l; P<0.01) in lambs at birth compared with controls. There was no significant effect of supplementation on immune function or survival in the lambs.  相似文献

A low finishing weight and poor carcass characteristics are major causes of lower incomes in extensive sheep flocks; however, the use of terminal sire crossbreeding would improve lamb performance and carcass traits under these conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate sire breed effects on the performance of lambs born to Corriedale ewes in extensive sheep systems in Western Patagonia. A total of 10 Corriedale, 10 Dorset, nine Suffolk and seven Texel sires, 16 of which were under a genetic recorded scheme and 20 selected from flocks not participating in genetic improvement programmes, were used across six commercial farms for 2 successive years. Data were collected from 685 lambs of the four resulting genotypes. Overall, Corriedale lambs were 0.47 kg lighter at birth than crossbred lambs (P<0.001). Suffolk and Texel sired lambs required more assistance (P<0.01) at birth than Corriedale or Dorset sired lambs, with Suffolk sired lambs requiring the most assistance (8%). Ewes sired with Suffolk rams had larger (P<0.05) litters than ewes sired with Texel or Corriedale rams. Lamb live weight gain from birth to weaning was higher (P<0.001) in crossbred lambs compared with Corriedale lambs, therefore, crossbred lambs averaged 2.9 kg heavier BW (P<0.001) than Corriedale lambs. A significant sire breed x sire source interaction was detected for lamb live weight gain (P<0.05) and lamb live weight at weaning (P<0.01), showing that the heaviest lambs were from recorded sires, except for Suffolk crossbred lambs. Mortality rate to weaning was increased (P<0.05) in Suffolk cross lambs (31%), with Corriedale lambs showing the lowest (17%) mortality. Terminal sire breeds increased (P<0.001) cold carcass weight, with 13.8, 16.0, 15.2 and 14.9 kg for the Corriedale, Dorset, Suffolk and Texel sired lambs, respectively. Carcass length, kidney knob and channel fat, fat grade, grade rule and fat depth measurements were not affected by sire breed (P>0.05). Carcass conformation was higher in Texel sired lambs compared with Corriedale lambs (P<0.05), with Dorset and Suffolk sired lambs being intermediate. Crossbred lambs showed a greater (P<0.001) eye muscle than Corriedale. Commercial cuts were affected by sire breed, as a result of the Corriedale lambs being smaller and having lighter carcass than crossbred lambs. Significant improvement in lamb weights at weaning and carcass traits could be expected when using a terminal sire on Corriedale ewes in Western Patagonia. However, no advantages were detected with the use of recorded sires under these production systems.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of GnRH analogue (buserelin) or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG, Chorulon) treatment on Day 12 of pregnancy on ovarian function, plasma hormone concentrations, conceptus growth and placentation in ewes and ewe lambs. After oestrus synchronization with progestagen sponges and eCG, all the animals were mated with fertile rams. Both ewes and ewe lambs (20 per treatment group) were given either normal saline or 4 microg GnRH or 200 IU hCG on Day 12 post-mating. Pre- and post-treatment plasma hormone concentrations were determined in seven pregnant animals per treatment group in samples collected 1h before and 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment. Overall mean progesterone concentrations were higher (P<0.001) in ewes as compared with ewe lambs in saline-treated controls. GnRH or hCG treatment increased (P<0.001) mean plasma progesterone concentrations in both age groups, however, post-treatment concentrations were significantly (P<0.05) higher in ewes than in ewe lambs. Oestradiol concentrations were similar in the two control groups. In ewes, but not in ewe lambs, both GnRH and hCG treatments significantly (P<0.05) increased the mean oestradiol concentrations above pre-treatment levels. Moreover, post-treatment oestradiol concentrations in GnRH- and hCG-treated animals were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those in the saline-treated controls. LH release in response to GnRH treatment was greater (P<0.05) in ewes than in ewe lambs, whereas FSH release in ewes was less (P<0.05) than that of ewe lambs. The effects of GnRH or hCG on conceptus growth and placentation was determined at slaughter on Day 25. In ewes, GnRH treatment increased (P<0.05) luteal weight, amniotic sac width and length, and crown-rump length compared with controls, but had no effect on these parameters in ewe lambs. In ewes, hCG treatment also enhanced (P<0.05) luteal weight, amniotic sac width and length, crown-rump length, embryo weight and number of placentomes as compared with controls. In ewe lambs, there was no difference (P<0.05) between hCG and control groups in luteal weight, embryo weight and amniotic sac width but crown-rump length, amniotic sac length and the number of placentomes forming the placenta were greater (P<0.05). In conclusion, GnRH or hCG treatment on Day 12 of pregnancy can increase ovarian function, conceptus growth and placental attachment in ewes. Two ways of reducing the cost of replacements are increasing litter size and number of litters produced; thus, the total weight of lamb carcass output per ewe lifetime. The effects of ewe genotype on the performance of ewes lambing at 1 year and of their progeny to slaughter, and the effect of age at first joining (7 or 19 months) on BW at ~19 months and survival to joining at 19 months were evaluated over two consecutive years, using 460 ewe lambs from three genotypes: Belclare (Bel), Suffolk × Belclare (Suf × Bel) and ≥ 75% Suffolk ancestry (Suf75). Lambs from the three genotypes were at a similar proportion of mature BW and half of the lambs, within genotype, were allocated to be joined for the first time at 7 or 19 months. The ewe lambs were managed in a grass-based rotational-grazing system, except when housed from December to March on a grass silage-based diet. Belclare ewes had larger litters (P < 0.001), reared more lambs per ewe joined (P < 0.01), were lighter at lambing and at 19 months (P < 0.01), were of smaller body size at 19 months (P < 0.001) and their progeny were lighter at weaning (P < 0.05) relative to Suf75 genotype; the Suf × Bel ewes were intermediate for most traits but had a significantly lower litter size (P < 0.05) than Bel ewes. Progeny from Suf × Bel ewes were 17 days younger at slaughter (P < 0.01) relative to those from Bel ewes. Ewe genotype had no effect (P > 0.05) on lamb mortality (born dead, total mortality to weaning), lambing assistance, number of ewes that failed to lamb, or on ewe survival to 19 months of age. Increasing ewe BW at joining increased the probability (P < 0.001) of rearing at least one lamb and this effect was consistent across genotypes. There were significant relationships (P < 0.001) between ewe BW at lambing and lamb BW at birth and at weaning of 0.053 (SE 0.0089) kg and 0.29 (SE 0.049) kg, respectively. Ewes that lambed at 1 year were 2 kg lighter (P < 0.001) at 19 months of age and had a smaller body size (P < 0.01) relative to those not joined. It is concluded that ewe genotype had a significant effect on number of lambs reared, and thus lamb carcass output. Whilst lambing at 1 year reduced BW by 2 kg when joined at 19 months, it did not affect ewe survival to that stage.  相似文献

Effects of season, postpartum interval and short-term weaning were investigated on luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in ewes. Blood samples were collected at 10-min intervals for 4 h (basal period). Then gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) was administered and 10 more blood samples were collected over an additional 4 h period. The effects of day post partum (5, 20 or 40) and short-term weaning (weaned Day 37, tested Day 40 post partum) on basal and GnRH-induced LH secretion were tested. Mean basal concentrations of LH for ewes on Day 5, 20 or 40 post partum ranged from 1.6 to 4.6 ng/ml and did not differ. Mean concentrations of LH during the post-GnRH sampling interval were greater (P<0.01) for ewes bled on Day 20 or 40 post partum (12.3 and 11.8 ng/ml, respectively) than for ewes bled on Day 5 or for unbred control ewes (6.7 and 5.8 ng/ml, respectively). Weaning on Day 37 depressed GnRH-induced LH secretion on Day 40 post partum (8.18 ng/ml; P<0.05). Seasonal changes in LH secretion on Day 20 or 40 post partum in January, March or June lambing ewes were also tested. There was no difference in basal or GnRH-induced LH secretion between Day 20 or 40 post partum among groups in January or March.. In June, ewes had lower (P<0.01) basal and GnRH-induced LH secretion on Day 20 post partum than ewes did on Day 40 post partum. Across month of the year, on Day 20 post partum, ewes lambing in March released more LH in response to GnRH than ewes lambing in January (P=0.07) or June (P<0.05). Response to GnRH on Day 20 post partum was similar for ewes lambing in January or June (P>0.1). Ewes lambing in January released less (P<0.01) LH on Day 40 post partum than ewes lambing in March or June; however, no difference was detected between the latter two groups (P>0.1). Thus, seasonal modifications of the releasable pool of LH may mask or modify the effect of the postpartum interval upon this endocrine response.  相似文献

Plane of nutrition (PN) offered to ewe replacements during the rearing phase (8 to 17 months) and first pregnancy may affect reproductive and progeny performance when replacements are joined at ~19 months. The effects of PN offered to spring-born ewe replacements during their first winter (winter_1), second summer (summer_2) and subsequent winter (mid and late pregnancy; winter_2) were evaluated, over 3 consecutive years, using 287 ewe lambs of four genotypes: Charmoise×Scottish Blackface (C×SBF), Belclare×SBF (Bel×SBF), Belclare (Bel) and Belclare×SBF (heterozygous for a gene, either FecGH or FecXG mutations, that increases ovulation rate: BelMG×SBF). Ewe lambs were offered, daily, a deferred-grazed herbage allowance (HA) of either 0.75 or 1.75 kg dry matter during winter_1. During summer_2 the replacements were set-stocked to maintain sward heights of 4 or 6 cm. Ewes were housed during mid and late pregnancy (winter_2) and offered either medium or high-feed-value grass silage, thus yielding a 2×2×2 factorial design. Increasing HA during winter_1 and residual sward height during summer_2 increased ewe BW post joining (P<0.001) and at lambing (P<0.01), but had no effect (P>0.05) on number of lambs reared. Increasing HA during winter_1 increased lamb BW at birth (P<0.05) and reduced carcass fat score (P<0.05). There was a significant interaction between PN offered during winter_1 and summer_2 for average daily gain (ADG) from birth to 5 weeks (P<0.01) and from 5 to 10 weeks (P<0.05): progeny of replacements that experienced either a high or low PN throughout the rearing phase had lower ADG than lambs born to the replacements that experienced a low PN only during winter_1 or summer_2. Increasing PN during winter_2 increased ewe BW (P<0.001), lamb BW at birth (P<0.001) and weaning (P<0.05) and reduced the proportion of ewes that failed to lamb (P<0.01). Ewe genotype had a significant (P<0.001) effect on litter size (1.48 to 2.45), number of lambs reared, lamb BW at birth and weaning, lamb ADG and age at slaughter. It is concluded that, among the nutrition treatments examined, increasing PN during mid and late pregnancy had the greatest effect on ewe and progeny performance. Although increasing PN offered during winter_1 increased lamb birth BW, PN offered during summer_2 had no effect on lamb performance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of restricted feeding before puberty on reproduction, lactation and offspring growth performance in replacement ewe lambs over two breeding seasons. At weaning, 41 Dorset ewe lambs were assigned to one of three diets: an ad libitum control diet with medium-quality forage (MQF; 13.3% crude protein (CP), 1.81 Mcal metabolizable energy per kg, 42.8% ADF; diet A-MQF); a restricted diet with the same forage as A but less feed concentrate (diet R-MQF); or a high-quality forage (HQF) diet (14.8% CP, 2.15 Mcal ME/kg, 34.7% ADF; diet F-HQF). The quantity of concentrate offered to the group R-MQF and F-HQF ewe lambs was adjusted to obtain 70% of the control ewe lambs' growth rate. The diets were offered for 75 days following weaning to cover the allometric phase of mammary gland development. Prepubertal restriction did not affect (P > 0.10) the gestation rate, number of lambs born or the body weight and body condition score of ewes at lambing or at the end of lactation. Ewes from groups R-MQF and F-HQF tended to produce more milk during their first lactation compared to those from group A-MQF (P = 0.07). During the second lactation, groups R-MQF and F-HQF had better standardized milk production than group A-MQF (P < 0.05), and group R-MQF produced more milk than group F-HQF (P < 0.05). Milk fat and protein content were not affected by treatments (P > 0.10) Fat and protein yield were affected by treatments only at the second lactation (P < 0.10 and P < 0.05, respectively). Lamb birth and weaning weights were not affected by prepubertal restriction of feeding in their mother (P > 0.10). However, the average daily gain of second breeding season lambs was higher for the R-MQF group than the F-HQF group (P < 0.05), and a similar trend was observed for total gain (P < 0.10). Restricted feeding before puberty does not impair future reproductive performance; however, it has a positive impact on lactation and on lambs' growth performance.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of vegetable oil supplementation of ewe diets on the performance and fatty acid (FA) composition of their suckling lambs. Forty-eight pregnant Churra ewes (mean BW 64.3±0.92 kg) with their 72 newborn lambs (prolificacy=1.5) were assigned to one of four experimental diets, supplemented with 3% of hydrogenated palm (PALM), olive (OLI), soya (SOY) or linseed (LIN) oil. Lambs were nourished exclusively by suckling from their respective mothers. Ewes were milked once daily, and milk samples were taken once a week. When lambs reached 11 kg, they were slaughtered and samples were taken from musculus longissimus dorsi (intramuscular fat) and subcutaneous fat tissue. No changes were observed in milk yield, proximal composition or lamb performance (P>0.10). Milk and lamb subcutaneous and intramuscular fat samples from the PALM diet had the highest saturated fatty acid concentration, whereas those of the OLI, SOY and LIN diets had the lowest (P<0.05). The greatest monounsaturated fatty acid concentration was observed in milk from ewes fed OLI, and the least in milk and in lamb subcutaneous and intramuscular fat samples from LIN and PALM diets. Milk and lamb fat from ewes fed PALM displayed the highest 16:0 proportion and the lowest 18:0 (P<0.05). There were higher concentrations of cis-9 18:1 in OLI samples (P<0.05), more 18:2n-6 in SOY lambs and milk fat (P<0.001) and the highest levels of 18:3n-3 and 20:5n-3 in LIN samples (P<0.01). Milk and lamb subcutaneous and intramuscular samples from SOY and LIN diets contained the most cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid, whereas PALM samples had the least (P<0.01). Sheep diet supplementation with different oils, constituting up to 3% of their diets, resulted in changes in the FA composition of milk and the subcutaneous and intramuscular fat of suckling lambs, but did not affect either milk production or lamb performance.  相似文献
