When is a maternal effect adaptive?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Dustin J. Marshall  Tobias Uller 《Oikos》2007,116(12):1957-1963
Maternal effects have become an important field of study in evolutionary ecology and there is an ongoing debate regarding their adaptive significance. Some maternal effects can act to increase offspring fitness and are called 'adaptive maternal effects'. However, other maternal effects decrease offspring fitness and there is confusion regarding whether certain maternal effects are indeed adaptive or merely physiological inevitabilities. Here we suggest that the focus on the consequences of maternal effects for offspring fitness only and the use of 'snapshot' estimates of fitness have misdirected our effort to understand the evolution of maternal effects. We suggest that selection typically acts on maternal effects to maximise maternal rather than (or in addition to) offspring fitness. We highlight the importance of considering how maternal effects influence maternal fitness across a mother's lifetime and describe four broad types of maternal effects using an outcome-based approach. Overall, we suggest that many maternal effects will have an adaptive basis for mothers, regardless of whether these effects increase or decrease survival or reproductive success of individual offspring.  相似文献

Most experimental studies that deal with the effects of bioticinteractions in marine soft sediments are designed to examinethe direct effects of one species (or group of species) on somesubset of the community. However, species within a communityinfluence one another through a complex web comprising bothdirect and indirect effects. Ignoring this complexity in thedevelopment of hypotheses and experimental designs will likelylead to unexpected or conflicting findings. Few studies of marinesoft-sediment communities have emphasized indirect effects andeven fewer have included experimental designs capable of testingfor them. To illustrate the potential importance of indirecteffects in marine soft sediments, I provide several examplesfrom the literature and describe the type of experimental designrequired to demonstrate a simple indirect effect involving threespecies. Perspective on indirect effects in a particular communitychanges as more information is collected about individual speciesand their effects. The influence of one species or guild maybe confounded by that of another and even effects expected tobe strong may appear weak or nonexistent as a result of unidentifiedindirect effects. Recognizing indirect effects in soft-sedimentcommunities may help to explain apparent paradoxical resultsin past experiments and provide an improved template for thedesign of future experiments.  相似文献

The effects of felodipine on renal hemodynamics and excretion were evaluated in the anesthetized dog. Unilateral renal arterial infusion of felodipine produced ipsilateral increases in the absolute and fractional excretion of sodium and water which were greater than those of potassium; these effects occurred in the absence of changes in mean arterial pressure, renal blood flow, or glomerular filtration rate. There were no significant effects on renal hemodynamic or excretory function in the contralateral kidney. The unilateral renal arterial infusion of isotonic saline or vehicle produced no significant effects on renal hemodynamic or excretory function in either ipsilateral or contralateral kidney. Felodipine, a calcium antagonist with vasodilator antihypertensive properties, in doses which do not affect systemic or renal hemodynamics in the dog, increased urinary flow rate and sodium excretion by decreasing renal tubular water and sodium reabsorption. As a vasodilator antihypertensive agent, felodipine possesses potentially advantageous diuretic and natriuretic properties.  相似文献

These experiments examined effects of chronic ethanol, repeated noradrenergic stimulation or inhibition, and ethanol combined with the noradrenergic treatments on regulation of Na+,K+-ATPase. Chronic treatment with ethanol reduced the sensitivity of K+-p-nitrophenyl-phosphatase to ethanol, increased affinity for K+, reduced the sensitivity of K+ affinity to ATP or ethanol, and reduced delta H and delta S for K+ activation and for the E1-E2 transition. These effects were all opposite to those of ethanol added in vitro. Treatment with yohimbine had the opposite effects on ethanol sensitivity, K+ affinity, K+ interactions with ethanol and ATP, and thermodynamic parameters for cation activation or conformational change. These effects were similar to those of norepinephrine in vitro. The effects of yohimbine treatment were eliminated or reduced in rats also treated with ethanol. Depletion of norepinephrine had effects opposite to those of yohimbine. These data are consistent with a reduction in membrane fluidity, at least in the vicinity of Na+,K+-ATPase, during ethanol tolerance. Exposure to norepinephrine, in vitro or in vivo, had effects on Na+,K+-ATPase that were similar to those of increased membrane fluidity.  相似文献

We determine the nuclear-dicytoplasmic effects of unidirectional gene flow via pollen and seeds upon a mixed-mating plant population, focusing on nuclear-mitochondrial-chloroplast systems where mitochondria are inherited maternally and chloroplasts paternally, as in many conifers. After first delineating the general effects of admixture (via seeds or individuals) on the nonrandom associations in such systems, we derive the full dicytonuclear equilibrium structure, including when disequilibria may be indicators of gene flow. Substantial levels of permanent two- and three-locus disequilibria can be generated in adults by (i) nonzero disequilibria in the migrant pools or (ii) intermigrant admixture effects via different chloroplast frequencies in migrant pollen and seeds. Additionally, three-locus disequilibria can be generated by higher-order intermigrant effects such as different chloroplast frequencies in migrant pollen and seeds coupled with nuclear-mitochondrial disequilibria in migrant seeds, or different nuclear frequencies in migrant pollen and seeds coupled with mitochondrial-chloroplast disequilibria in migrant seeds. Further insight is provided by considering special cases with seed or pollen migration alone, complete random mating or selfing, or migrant pollen and seeds lacking disequilibria or intermigrant admixture effects. The results complete the theoretical foundation for a new method for estimating pollen and seed migration using joint cytonuclear or dicytonuclear data.  相似文献

Plasma contains a variety of long-chain fatty acids (FAs), such that about 35% are saturated and 65% are unsaturated. There are countless examples that show how different FAs impart specific and unique effects, or even opposing actions, on cellular function. Despite these differing effects, palmitate (C16:0) is regularly used to represent "FAs" in cell based experiments. Although palmitate can be useful to induce and study stress effects in cultured cells, these effects in isolation are not physiologically relevant to dietary manipulations, obesity, or the consequences of physiological concentrations of FAs. Hence, authors should avoid conclusions that generalize about "FAs" or "saturated FAs" or "high-fat diet" effects if only a single FA was used in the reported experiments.  相似文献

It is often assumed that mating with close relatives reduces offspring fitness. In such cases, reduced offspring fitness may arise from inbreeding depression (i.e., genetic effects of elevated homozygosity) or from post‐mating maternal investment. This can be due to a reduction in female investment after mating with genetically incompatible males (“differential allocation”) or compensation for incompatibility (“reproductive compensation”). Here, we looked at the effects of mating with relatives on offspring fitness in mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki. In this species, females are assumed to be nonplacental and to allocate resources to eggs before fertilization, limiting differential allocation. We looked at the effects of mating with a brother or with an unrelated male on brood size, offspring size, gestation period, and early offspring growth. Mating with a relative reduced the number of offspring at birth, but there was no difference in the likelihood of breeding, gestation time, nor in the size or growth of these offspring. We suggest that due to limited potential for maternal effects to influence these traits that any reduction in offspring fitness, or lack thereof, can be explained by inbreeding depression rather than by maternal effects. We highlight the importance of considering the potential role of maternal effects when studying inbreeding depression and encourage further studies in other Poeciliid species with different degrees of placentation to test whether maternal effects mask or amplify any genetic effects of mating with relatives.  相似文献

Non-lethal effects of predation in birds   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
WILL CRESSWELL 《Ibis》2008,150(1):3-17
Predators can affect individual fitness and population and community processes through lethal effects (direct consumption or ‘density’ effects), where prey is consumed, or through non‐lethal effects (trait‐mediated effects or interactions), where behavioural compensation to predation risk occurs, such as animals avoiding areas of high predation risk. Studies of invertebrates, fish and amphibians have shown that non‐lethal effects may be larger than lethal effects in determining the behaviour, condition, density and distribution of animals over a range of trophic levels. Although non‐lethal effects have been well described in the behavioural ecology of birds (and also mammals) within the context of anti‐predation behaviour, their role relative to lethal effects is probably underestimated. Birds show many behavioural and physiological changes to reduce direct mortality from predation and these are likely to have negative effects on other aspects of their fitness and population dynamics, as well as affecting the ecology of their own prey and their predators. As a consequence, the effects of predation in birds are best measured by trade‐offs between maximizing instantaneous survival in the presence of predators and acquiring or maintaining resources for long‐term survival or reproduction. Because avoiding predation imposes foraging costs, and foraging behaviour is relatively easy to measure in birds, the foraging–predation risk trade‐off is probably an effective framework for understanding the importance of non‐lethal effects, and so the population and community effects of predation risk in birds and other animals. Using a trade‐off approach allows us to predict better how changes in predator density will impact on population and community dynamics, and how animals perceive and respond to predation risk, when non‐lethal effects decouple the relationship between predator density and direct mortality rate. The trade‐off approach also allows us to identify where predation risk is structuring communities because of avoidance of predators, even when this results in no observable direct mortality rate.  相似文献

In many animal taxa, prior contest experience affects future performance such that winning increases the chances of winning in the future (winner effect) and losing increases the chances of losing in the future (loser effect). It is, however, not clear whether this pattern typically arises from experience effects on actual or perceived fighting ability (or both). In this study, we looked at winner and loser effects in the jumping spider Phidippus clarus. We assigned winning or losing experience to spiders and tested them against opponents of similar fighting ability in subsequent contests at 1-, 2-, 5-, and 24-h intervals. We examined the strength of winner and loser effects, how long effects persist, as well as how experience affected perceived and actual fighting ability. Our results demonstrate that winner and loser effects are of approximately the same magnitude, although loser effects last longer than winner effects. Our results also demonstrate that previous experience alters actual fighting ability because both the assessment and escalation periods were affected by experience. We suggest that the retention time of experience effects depends on expected encounter rates as well as other behavioral and ecological factors. In systems with short breeding seasons and/or rapidly fluctuating populations, context-dependent retention of experience effects may allow males to track their status relative to the fluctuating fighting ability of local competitors without paying the costs necessary to recall or assess individual competitors.  相似文献

Understanding the potential impact of ozone depletion on terrestrial ecosystems is constrained by lack of information on the effects of environmentally realistic UV-B doses on terrestrial organisms other than higher plants. Increasing UV-B may alter interactions between plants and consumers through direct effects on consumer organisms (herbivores, phytopathogens, decomposers, etc.). The effects of increasing UV-B on arthropods are not known. Significant UV-B effects on fungi have been reported, and may be either negative (inhibition of spore germination and mycelial growth) or positive (increased growth, induction of reproductive development and sporulation). However, in many cases consumers are unlikely to be directly exposed to UV-B in the field. In addition, UV action spectra for fungi suggest that this major group may be less sensitive to the effects of ozone depletion than higher plants. Host mediated effects of UV-B on consumers may include alterations in plant chemistry. While secondary metabolites such as phenolics may increase under increased UV-B, this is not invariably the case and evidence that such changes have significant effects on consumers is limited. In particular, there is no evidence that increased UV-B increases resistance of higher plants to fungal pathogens. Indeed, increased UV-B prior to inoculation results in no significant effect or increased disease. Such responses may be attributable to UV-B effects on host surface properties or on compounds other than phenolics. However, such changes are poorly known, and their potential effects on phytopathogens, herbivores or decomposers cannot be assessed. Understanding the effects of UV-B on terrestrial ecosystems is further limited since virtually nothing is known of possible impacts on higher trophic levels, i.e. predators, parasites or pathogens.  相似文献

Early quantitative genetic theories emphasize the distribution of gene effects at individual loci or the distribution of mutant effects in maintaining quantitative genetic variation, but infrequently stress the distribution of gene effects among loci. In this study, we analyse the effects of the distribution of quantitative trait nucleotides (QTN) effects among sites under artificial and stabilizing selection. Wright's formula is applied to describing the density distribution of allele frequencies of multiple diallelic QTN at the equilibrium of mutation-drift-selection. Our results demonstrate that the distribution of QTN effects among sites can affect additive genetic variation in terms of total additive variance, average gene diversity, per-class contribution of QTN effects and per-QTN contribution. When the distribution of QTN effects among sites is changed from L-shaped to bell-shaped or to be a flatter, both the total additive variance and the average gene diversity are changed. Per-class and per-QTN contributions exhibit different distribution patterns. The L-shaped distribution indicates the predominant role of the aggregative effects from the QTN of small finite effects. The bell-shaped or flatter distributions indicate the predominance of the QTN of intermediate and large effects. These predictions highlight the significance of the distribution of QTN effects among sites in interpreting the maintenance of quantitative genetic variation at the fine genome scale.  相似文献

Phenotypes respond to environments experienced directly by an individual, via phenotypic plasticity, or to the environment experienced by ancestors, via transgenerational environmental effects. The adaptive value of environmental effects depends not only on the strength and direction of the induced response but also on how long the response persists within and across generations, and how stably it is expressed across environments that are encountered subsequently. Little is known about the genetic basis of those distinct components, or even whether they exhibit genetic variation. We tested for genetic differences in the inducibility, temporal persistence, and environmental stability of transgenerational environmental effects in Arabidopsis thaliana. Genetic variation existed in the inducibility of transgenerational effects on traits expressed across the life cycle. Surprisingly, the persistence of transgenerational effects into the third generation was uncorrelated with their induction in the second generation. Although environmental effects for some traits in some genotypes weakened over successive generations, others were stronger or even in the opposite direction in more distant generations. Therefore, transgenerational effects in more distant generations are not merely caused by the retention or dissipation of those expressed in prior generations, but they may be genetically independent traits with the potential to evolve independently.  相似文献

The major adverse consequences of radiation exposures are attributed to DNA damage in irradiated cells that has not been correctly restored by metabolic repair processes. However, the dogma that genetic alterations are restricted to directly irradiated cells has been challenged by observations in which effects of ionizing radiation arise in non-irradiated cells. These, so called, untargeted effects are demonstrated in cells that are the descendants of irradiated cells either directly or via media transfer (radiation-induced genomic instability) or in cells that have communicated with irradiated cells (radiation-induced bystander effects). Radiation-induced genomic instability is characterized by a number of delayed responses including chromosomal abnormalities, gene mutations and cell death. Bystander effects include increases or decreases in damage-inducible and stress-related proteins, increases or decreases in reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, cell death or cell proliferation, cell differentiation, radioadaptation, induction of mutations and chromosome aberrations and chromosomal instability. The phenotypic expression of untargeted effects and the potential consequences of these effects in tissues reflect a balance between the type of bystander signals produced and the responses of cell populations to such signals, both of which may be significantly influenced by cell type and genotype. Thus, in addition to targeted effects of damage induced directly in cells by irradiation, a variety of untargeted effects may also make important short-term and long-term contributions to determining overall outcome after radiation exposures.

Determining the sources of floral variation is crucial to the understanding of floral evolution. Architectural effects and phenotypic plasticity in development can play an important role in intraplant floral variation, giving rise to gender dimorphism or sexual specialization. Amphicarpic plants have another source of floral variation that could also be influenced by positional effects. We studied the effects of resource availability and architecture in intraplant floral variability in two ecotypes of the amphicarpic Emex spinosa. Male flowers were smaller than females, irrespective of position or resource availability. Emex spinosa shows gender dimorphism not influenced by positional effects. Flower size differences among positions were mainly due to architecture, because the effects of resources on flower size were minimal. Architectural effects caused a decrease in female flower size from ground to apical positions but an increase in most male traits that resulted in sexual specialization at the end of flowering. In general, the ecotypes were similarly affected by resources or architecture. Differences between subterranean and aerial female flowers seem also to be a consequence of architecture. Our results contribute to the evidence that resource limitation is an overestimated effect and that architectural effects must be considered in studies of floral or fruit variation.  相似文献

The effects of chalcone derivatives on 12-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase of mouse epidermis were investigated. The chalcone derivatives which have 3,4-dihydroxycinnamoyl structure in the molecule, such as 3,4-dihydroxychalcone, 3,4,2'-trihydroxychalcone, 3,4,4'-trihydroxychalcone and 3,4,2'4'-tetrahydroxychalcone, potently inhibited epidermal 12-lipoxygenase activity. Although some of them also inhibited cyclooxygenase activity at relatively high concentrations, the inhibitory effects of these chalcone derivatives on 12-lipoxygenase were 10 times or more potent than their effects on cyclooxygenase. The chalcone derivatives which have cinnamoyl or 4-hydroxycinnamoyl structure, instead of 3,4-dihydroxycinnamoyl structure, in the molecule, showed little or no inhibitory effects on either 12-lipoxygenase or cyclooxygenase activities. The inhibitory effects of chalcone derivatives on 12-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase of mouse epidermis are dependent on the particular structure, i.e. 3,4-dihydroxycinnamoyl structure, of the chalcone derivatives.  相似文献

Identifying high performing hybrids is an essential part of every maize breeding program. Genomic prediction of maize hybrid performance allows to identify promising hybrids, when they themselves or other hybrids produced from their parents were not tested in field trials. Using simulations, we investigated the effects of marker density (10, 1, 0.3 marker per mega base pair, Mbp(-1)), convergent or divergent parental populations, number of parents tested in other combinations (2, 1, 0), genetic model (including population-specific and/or dominance marker effects or not), and estimation method (GBLUP or BayesB) on the prediction accuracy. We based our simulations on marker genotypes of Central European flint and dent inbred lines from an ongoing maize breeding program. To simulate convergent or divergent parent populations, we generated phenotypes by assigning QTL to markers with similar or very different allele frequencies in both pools, respectively. Prediction accuracies increased with marker density and number of parents tested and were higher under divergent compared with convergent parental populations. Modeling marker effects as population-specific slightly improved prediction accuracy under lower marker densities (1 and 0.3?Mbp(-1)). This indicated that modeling marker effects as population-specific will be most beneficial under low linkage disequilibrium. Incorporating dominance effects improved prediction accuracies considerably for convergent parent populations, where dominance results in major contributions of SCA effects to the genetic variance among inter-population hybrids. While the general trends regarding the effects of the aforementioned influence factors on prediction accuracy were similar for GBLUP and BayesB, the latter method produced significantly higher accuracies for models incorporating dominance.  相似文献

Many peptides that are released in vitro or in vivo from animal or plant proteins are bioactive and have regulatory functions in humans beyond normal and adequate nutrition. Different health effects have been attributed to food-derived peptides, including antimicrobial properties, blood pressure-lowering (ACE inhibitory) effects, cholesterol-lowering ability, antithrombotic and antioxidant activities, enhancement of mineral absorption and/or bioavailability, cyto- or immunomodulatory effects, and opioid activities. Numerous products are already on the market or under development by food companies that exploit the potential of food-derived bioactive peptides and which ascribe scientifically evidenced health claims to consumption of these functional foods.  相似文献

Association studies using random population samples are increasingly being applied in the identification and inference of genetic effects of genes underlying complex traits. It is well recognized that population admixture may yield false-positive identification of genetic effects for complex traits. However, it is less well appreciated that population admixture can appear to mask, change, or reverse true genetic effects for genes underlying complex traits. By employing a simple population genetics model, we explore the effects and the conditions of population admixture in masking, changing, or even reversing true genetic effects of genes underlying complex traits.  相似文献
