Intermaxillary (IMF) screws feature several advantages over other devices used for intermaxillary fixation, but using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to determine the safe and danger zones to place these devices for all patients can be expensive. This study aimed to determine the optimal interradicular and buccopalatal/buccolingual spaces for IMF screw placement in the maxilla and mandible. The CBCT volumetric data of 193 patients was used to generate transaxial slices between the second molar on the right to the second molar on the left in both arches. The mean interradicular and buccopalatal/buccolingual distances and standard deviation values were obtained at heights of 2, 5, 8 and 11 mm from the alveolar bone crest. An IMF screw with a diameter of 1.0 mm and length of 7 mm can be placed distal to the canines (2 - 11 mm from the alveolar crest) and less than 8 mm between the molars in the maxilla. In the mandible, the safest position is distal to the first premolar (more than 5 mm) and distal to the second premolar (more than 2 mm). There was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the right and left quadrants. The colour coding 3D template showed the safe and danger zones based on the mesiodistal, buccopalatal and buccolingual distances in the maxilla and mandible. The safest sites for IMF screw insertion in the maxilla were between the canines and first premolars and between the first and second molars. In the mandible, the safest sites were between the first and second premolars and between the second premolar and first molar. However, the IMF screw should not exceed 1.0 mm in diameter and 7 mm in length.

It is of interest to compile available information on the root canal morphology of primary maxillary molars from known literature. The literature resources used to collect data include Medline/PubMed, The Cochrane Central Register of Clinical Trials, SIGLE and Science Direct. Data consists of type of population, number of teeth per study, number of root canals, canal length and type of root canal configuration. We used data from a total of 13 studies (951 primary maxillary molars). Maxillary molars (1st and 2nd) are dominant for two roots variant. The first molar the mean root length ranges from 7.9mm - 8.1mm. The second molar ranges from 7.2mm-8.5mm. Type I (explain in a phrase) canal morphology is the common variant in both the molars. Data shows that Root Canal morphology shows variations with the diagnostic aid (example micro CT) used and in different ethnic populations.

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00583.x Evaluation of compressive strength in the first premolars between young and elderly people: ex vivo study Objective: This study evaluated the compressive strength of first maxillary premolars from young and elderly people. Background: Findings have revealed that changes happening on dental structure lead to a higher susceptibility of tooth fracture. Materials and methods: Thirty teeth were divided into four groups as follows: G I (n = 7) premolars of elderly patients with fused roots, G II (n = 8) premolars of elderly with separate roots, G III (n = 7) pre‐molars of young people with fused roots and G IV (n = 8) premolars of young people with roots separated. The roots were placed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cylinder and embedded in acrylic resin. Afterward, the samples were subjected to fracture by compressive strength in a universal testing machine. Loads were applied in continuous and progressive speed of 0.5 mm/min until the moment of fracture. The values found underwent statistical analysis (anova α = 0.05). Results: With regard to age, there was a statistical difference, the teeth of the elderly being more susceptible to fracture (p < 0.05). With regard to root morphology, no significant differences between both groups were observed (p > 0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that with the methodology employed, the age factor was important with regard to fracture resistance to compression.

Among 234 children examined annually from age three to 20 years at the Burlington Growth Centre, there was statistically significant cooccurrence of early and late emergence sequences of the permanent first and second molars relative to the central incisors and second premolars in the same jaw and in both jaws. Alternatively, mandibular molar delay was not accompanied by corresponding maxillary molar delay, and the mandibular molars emerged later than the maxillary molars. This was strongly associated with Angle Class II malocclusion, indicating a relationship between relative time of emergence and relative position of opposing molars. Delay of the mandibular molar relative to the successional teeth or maxillary molars was associated with increased frequency of four cusped first and second molars and agenesis of third molars, indicating a tendency for co-occurrence of delay in timing of molar emergence with reduction in structure of the molars. These relationships were evident even though emergences were affected by early loss of a deciduous second molar which increased M1I1 and M2P2 sequences by earlier emergence of M1 and delayed emergence of P2.

Tooth eruption is a multifactorial process involving movement of existing tissues and formation of new tissues coordinated by a complex set of genetic events. We have used the model of the unopposed rodent molar to study morphological and genetic mechanisms involved in axial movement of teeth. Following extraction of opposing upper molars, lower molars supererupted by 0.13 mm. Labeled tissue sections revealed significant amounts of new bone and cementum apposition at the root apex of the unopposed side following supereruption for 12 days. Newly apposited cementum and alveolar bone layers were approximately 3-fold thicker in the experimental vs the control group, whereas periodontal ligament width was maintained. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining indicated bone resorption at the mesial alveolar walls of unopposed molars and provided in tandem with new bone formation at the distal alveolar walls an explanation for the distal drift of molars in this model. Microarray analysis and semiquantitative RT-PCR demonstrated a significant increase in collagen I, integrin beta5, and SPARC gene expression as revealed by comparison between the unopposed molar group and the control group. Immunohistochemical verification revealed increased levels of integrin beta5 and SPARC labeling in the periodontal ligament of the unopposed molar. Together our findings suggest that posteruptive axial movement of teeth was accomplished by significant formation of new root cementum and alveolar bone at the root apex in tandem with upregulation of collagen I, integrin beta5, and SPARC gene expression.

AimTo compare the angular changes of the third molars relative to the occlusal plane and to the second molar long axis in extraction group and compare these changes with a non extraction group.Materials and methodsThe study included pre and post treatment panoramic radiograph records of 90 subjects treated by first premolar extractions and 90 subjects who had been treated with non extraction orthodontic therapy (n = 90). Two angular variables were measured. Firstly, the angle between the long axis of the third molar and the occlusal plane (M3–OP) and secondly, the angle between the long axis of the third molar and the long axis of the second molar (M3–M2). Data were analyzed by paired and student’s t-test.ResultThe analyzed data to assess the changes in the third molar angulation from pretreatment to post treatment did not vary significantly in both the groups (p < 0.05). Both the groups showed decreased angular values. The M3–OP angular difference was (−7.3 ± 2.45) in extraction group as compared to (−5.85 ± 1.77) in non extraction group. The M3–M2 angular difference of (−4.26 ± 3.11) in extraction group and (−2.98 ± 1.74) in non-extraction group was observed.ConclusionExtraction of premolars did not demonstrate considerable changes on the angulation of the third molars. The factors other than premolar extractions may influence the angulation of the third molars.

The sequence of tooth eruption and replacement in Reeves' muntjac was determined from captive animals of known age. Pronounced sexual dimorphism is shown by the permanent upper canine which in the male is large, tusk-like and is used as a weapon. The upper canine was the first deciduous tooth to be replaced in males, at approximately 21 weeks of age, compared with 53–57 weeks in the female. The permanent mandibular teeth erupted in the order: molars, first and second incisors, premolars, third incisor and canine. The maxillary teeth erupted in the order: first molar, canine (in male), second and third molars, canine (in female), premolars. The full complement of 34 functional permanent teeth was attained by 83–92 weeks of age.

We observed the histology and tetracycline (TC) labeling in a single frontal section of alveolar bone of upper first molars of adolescent rats. A single injection of TC was administered intraperitonealy in adolescent rats. After three weeks, the upper jaws were immersed rapidly in liquid nitrogen and sectioned. Five micrometer unfixed, undecalcified frozen sections were cut and observed by light and fluorescence microscopy. Frontal sections of the upper first molar area revealed that the structural relationships among the roots, the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone, and also between the cervical enamel and the attachment epithelium were well preserved. The TC labeling lines in the sections were very clear and distinguished new bone from old bone. The brightness of the lines differed among regions. An analysis of the brightness in the same section suggested a difference in the bone forming activity at the time of injection.

The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of expression and bilateralism of two dental morphological traits in contemporary Jordanians: The hypocone reduction trait on the maxillary second permanent molar and Carabelli's trait on maxillary permanent first and second molars. Furthermore, inter-trait correlation and the relationship of Carabelli's traits with upper first molar dimensions were investigated. Three hundred subjects of school children at their 10th grade and of an average age of 15.5 +/- 0.4 years were involved. Alginate impressions for the maxillary arch were taken, dental casts were reproduced. The selected accurate casts were of 132 male- and 155 female-students. The frequencies of hypocone reduction trait on the maxillary second molar and Carabelli's trait on the maxillary molars were examined. Buccolingual and mesiodistal diameters of the maxillary first molar were measured and recorded. Paired Sample t test and Nonparametric Correlation analysis were used for data analysis. Hypocone reduction trait on the maxillary second molar was found in 29.8% of the examined students. Positive forms of Carabelli's trait on first and second molars were observed in 65.0% and 3.8%, respectively. Nonparametric correlation analysis revealed positive association between Carabelli's trait on first molar and hypocone reduction trait on the maxillary second molar. The presence of Carabelli's trait on first molar was strongly associated with the increase of buccolingual, but not the mesiodistal, diameter. Bilateralism was found highly significant in the tested traits and both genders (p < 0.001). This finding might be a sign of relatively low environmental stresses in the living Jordanian population and/or great ability of its individuals to buffer the adverse effects of such stresses.

‘Symmetrodontans’ are extinct mammals characterized by having a reversed‐triangle molar pattern in which three main cusps define a triangular molar crown. This dental morpholgy has been regarded as being intermediate between the ‘triconodont’ tooth and the tribosphenic pattern characterizing therians; it is a key feature in taxonomy of Mesozoic mammals and one to understand mammalian evolution and palaeobiology. Here we report a new genus and species of ‘symmetrodontan’ mammal, Lactodens sheni, from the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota, represented by a partial skeleton with dentary and upper and lower teeth with dental morphologies well‐preserved. The new species has a dental formula of three upper incisors, one canine, three premolars, and six molars/three lower incisors, one canine, five premolars and six lower molars, double‐rooted canines, extremely low‐crowned and transversely thin premolars, and acute angled molars. The dental morphologies of molars and peculiar deciduous premolars are similar to those of Spalacolestes from North America. The associated upper and lower dentitions from one individual animal helped to clarify tooth identification of some spalacotheriids represented only by fragmentary material. Phylogenetic analyses indicate a close relationship of the new species to North American spalacolestines and faunal interchanges between Eurasia and North America, thus supporting the notion that small‐bodied spalacotheriids were diverse and had a pan‐Laurasian distribution during the Early Cretaceous. Absence of the Meckelian groove suggests acquisition of the definitive mammalian middle ear in spalacolestines, and deciduous canines and premolars in the slim and extremely long dentary imply a faunivorous diet.

Objective

Molar intrusion by mini-screw implantation can cause different degrees of root resorption. However, most methods (2-D and 3-D) used for evaluating root resorption have focused on the root length without considering 3-D resorption. The purpose of this study was to volumetrically evaluate root resorption using cone beam computed tomography(CBCT) after mini-screw implant intrusion.

Materials and Methods

1. The volumes of 32 teeth were measured using CBCT and laser scanning to verify the accuracy of CBCT. 2. Twelve overerupted molars from adult patients were investigated in this study. After mini-screw implants were inserted into the buccal and palatal alveolar bones, 150 g of force was applied to the mini-screw implants on each side to intrude the molars. CBCT images of all patients were taken immediately prior to intrusion and after intrusion. The volumes of the roots were calculated using the Mimics software program. The differences between the pre-intrusion and post-intrusion root volumes were statistically evaluated with a paired-samples t-test. In addition, the losses of the roots were statistically compared with each other using one-way analysis of variance at the P<0.05 level.

Results

No statistically significant volume differences were observed between the physical (laser scanning) and CBCT measurements (P>0.05). The overerupted molars were significantly intruded (P<0.05), and the average intrusion was 3.30±1.60 mm. The differences between the pre-intrusion and post-intrusion root volumes were statistically significant for all of the roots investigated (P<0.05). The roots were sorted by volume loss in descending order as follows: mesiobuccal, palatal, and distobuccal. Statistical significance was achieved among the three roots. The average total resorption for each tooth was 58.39±1.54 mm3.

Conclusion

Volume measurement using CBCT was able to effectively evaluate root resorption caused by mini-screw intrusion. The highest volume loss was observed in the mesiobuccal root among the three roots of the investigated first molar teeth.

Tooth number in rodents is an example of reduction in evolution. All rodents have a toothless diastema lacking canine and most premolars present in most other mammals. Whereas some rodent lineages retained one premolar (p4), many others lost it during evolution. Recently, an 'inhibitory cascade' developmental model (IC) has been used to predict how the first molar (m1) influences the number and relative sizes of the following distal molars (m2 and m3). The model does not, however, consider the presence of premolars, and here we examine whether the premolar could influence and constrain molar proportions during development and evolution. By investigating a large data set of both extinct and extant rodent families over more than 40 million years, we show that the basal phenotype is characterized by the presence of premolars together with equally sized molars. More recent rodent families, with and without premolar, show more unequal molar sizes. Analysing molar areas, we demonstrated that (i) rodents harbour almost all the molar proportions known in mammals, and the IC model can explain about 80% of taxa in our data set; (ii) proportions of molars are influenced by the presence or absence of p4; and (iii) the most variable teeth in the dental row are m1 and m3, whether p4 is present or not. Moreover, m1 can represent up to half of the total molar area when p4 is absent. We hypothesize that p4 loss during evolution released the constraint on m1 development, resulting in a more variable size of m1 and thereby having an indirect effect on the evolution of the whole molar row.

Four fragmentary mandibles from the Stonesfield Slate facies, Taynton Limestone Formation, Middle Bathonian (Middle Jurassic), England, represent two species of Amphitherium A. prevostii A. rixoni sp. nov. Both species had five lower premolariform teeth. The composite formula for the lower dentition of Amphitherium appears to have been I/4, C/1, P/5, M/6–7. The seventh molar is not present in the presumably oldest individual, and its presence is regarded as probably an individual variation.   The mosaic evolution of patterns of differentiation of the postcanine dentition from nonmammalian cynodonts to modern therian mammals is reviewed. It is concluded that Amphitherium probably had reached the grade of modern therians in the division between diphyodont premolars and monophyodont molars. The common ancestor of Amphitherium and zatheres probably had lost the primitive pattern of posterior shift of the postcanine dentition, which appears to have consisted of five premolars and four or possibly five molars. In Amphitherium the number of molars probably was secondarily increased.

The buccal and lingual roots of 1077 teeth from 100 mandibles of South African Negroes were examined for the presence of dehiscences and fenestrae. All specimens were obtained from cadavers of known sex, tribe, and stated age; 10.5% of teeth were affected. Canines and first premolars were the most common teeth associated with dehiscences and fenestrae. Dehiscences occurred more commonly than fenestrae (1:0.49). The defects were found exclusively in the buccal plate of the alveolar process.

Prenatal dental development was investigated in 19 black howler monkey fetuses that ranged in crown-rump length from 84 mm to 170.5 mm. During this period of fetal development, all of the deciduous teeth and the first permanent molars were found to pass through various stages of crown and root formation. The deciduous incisors, canines, and first molars each calcified from a single calcification center. The second deciduous molars each calcified from two separate calcification centers. And, the third deciduous and first permanent molars each calcified from four separate calcification centers. The morphogenetic events involved in the establishment of the molar crown patterns were found to differ markedly from those of their counterparts among catarrhine primates. In all cases, however, the calcification sequence was found to be directly related to the morphology of the developing crown.

The dentition of a medieval population from the former Spandau Burgwall in Berlin was investigated with regard to caries and other abnormities of the teeth, the palate and the jaws. The caries frequency amounts to 7.9%, while 63.6% of the individuals had a caries dentition. The diminuation of the caries frequency from the juveniles to the 40--60 years old individuals depends on the high rate of loss of tooth during life. Probably, all teeth which have been lost during life can be evaluated as decayed teeth. X-ray pictures have shown that three sets of teeth have hypercementotic alterations at the roots, eight permanent dentitions have cysts and apical parodontitis. Supernumerary cuspids at the toothcrowns are to be seen as a tuberculum paramolare and a tuberculum intermedium. A second upper molar has a reduced crown with only two cuspids and shows the tendency of reduction to a bicuspid. Toothrotation and other deviations of teeth from their position in the row are frequent in this material. Four deciduous dentitions of children were investigated, too. Three carious teeth were found among 45 available teeth, two deciduous molars and one first upper molar show a Carabelli's tubercle, the other first molar has a fovea carabelli.

Lesions were noted in 7.0 and 4.4% of mandible pairs collected from the Western Arctic caribou herd of northwestern Alaska in 1959-61 and 1975-77, respectively. The prevalence of mandibular lesions in the 1959-61 collection is believed to be the highest reported in wild caribou herds of North America. The frequency of occurrence of mandibular lesions was highest in caribou 7 years of age and older, and there was a higher prevalence in adult males than in adult females. Trauma, dental abscesses, and periodontal disease were the probably cause of most lesions. Pathogenic bacteria were not isolated from mandibular lesions from an 11 year-old female. Thirty-three of 98 (33.7%) mandibles with lesions were missing one tooth, while ten (10.2%) were missing more than one tooth. The first molar (M1) was the most common tooth lost in association with lesions, although the loss of two or more teeth was more common among premolars than among molars.
