The intracellular distribution of the enzymes of nitrate and ammonia assimilation in apical cells of pea (Pisum sativum L.) roots is described. Nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.2) was found to have no organelle association, and is considered to be located in the cytosol or possibly loosely bound to the outside of an organelle. Nitrite reductase and glutamate synthase (EC 2.6.1.53) are plastid located, as is glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2) although this enzyme also has activity in the cytosol. Glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.3) was found only in the mitochondrion.  相似文献

10 selected midfacial dimensions were measured on each of 711 skulls from 4 anthropologically different populations and tested for their usefulness for the characterization of populations. The palate height cannot be recommended as a distinctive feature because of its considerable variability within the single groups. Lead remains one of the most hazardous metals in our environment. The concentrations of lead in coronal dentine and enamel have previously been reported but limited information is available regarding lead levels in radicular dentine and cementum. This study reports the distribution of lead in 26 roots of 16 human maxillary primary teeth from seven individuals. In addition, calcium and phosphorous concentrations were also measured to detect any variations in the degree of mineralization in different regions of the roots. The mean lead concentration in these roots was 1.67 +/- 1.43 microg/g, which is comparable to other studies. In all cases there were higher lead concentrations in the apices of non-resorbed roots of primary maxillary teeth relative to middle and cervical regions. The findings reported here are of potential significance during the process of physiological root resorption whence periapical tissue may be exposed to higher levels of lead.  相似文献

Outgrowth and fusion of the lateral and medial nasal processes and of the maxillary process of the first branchial arch are integral to lip and primary palate development. Wnt9b mutations are associated with cleft lip and cleft palate in mice; however, the cause of these defects remains unknown. Here, we report that Wnt9b(-/-) mice show significantly retarded outgrowth of the nasal and maxillary processes due to reduced proliferation of mesenchymal cells, which subsequently results in a failure of physical contact between the facial processes that leads to cleft lip and cleft palate. These cellular defects in Wnt9b(-/-) mice are mainly caused by reduced FGF family gene expression and FGF signaling activity resulting from compromised canonical WNT/β-catenin signaling. Our study has identified a previously unknown regulatory link between WNT9B and FGF signaling during lip and upper jaw development.  相似文献

The present paper describes the pattern of tooth replacement in the upper jaw of two size ranges of rainbow trout (standard lengths 12-15 cm and 20-23 cm) as determined from wax impressions of the dentitions taken twice weekly on anaesthetised fish. There was considerable variation in the nature of replacement waves (lines constructed on dental charts linking eruption times of alternate teeth) between fish for both the premaxillary/maxillary and vomerine/palatine rows. The wave patterns obtained showed the same consistency of form for any one animal which is to be expected when consecutive generations show constant or proportionately changing life spans. Data relating to the life span of the teeth is given. The results are compared with those derived for the lower jaw and the significance of wave form discussed.  相似文献

The roots ofAllium cepa L. were treated with water solutions of cyanein and griseofulvin for 24 and 48 h respectively, thereafter cultured for 48 h in the medium without the antibiotics, and the reversibility of the inhibition caused by the antibiotics was evaluated. Changes in the mitotic index of meristematic cells were followed in squash preparations of root apices. In addition to the cytologic observations, the differentiation of the primary meristem was followed in longitudinal sections. After the treatment with reversible doses of cyanein and griseofulvin respectively, differences were found in both the effects of the antibiotics during the treatment and the restoration of the inhibited processes after the treatment. In the cells treated with cyanein the restoration of mitotic activity was instantaneous but less intensive and in|complete especially in the case of the 48 h treatment. After the treatment with griseofulvin which temporarily interfered also with the differentiation of the primary meristem, the restoration of the inhibited processes was delayed but intensive after both application times, 48 h after the treatment no symptoms of the preceding inhibition could be observed.  相似文献

Recent work in our laboratory provides evidence for a revised view of the functioning of roots of maize, and probably of all the grasses. The development of coherent soil sheaths on the distal 30-cm of these roots, and the loss of the sheaths further back, led us to investigate the differences in surface structure, anatomy, carbon exudation and microflora of the sheathed and bare zones. The significant differences are summarized. But the fact which underlies all these differences is the maturation of the late metaxylem (LMX). In the sheathed zones the LMX elements are still alive and non-conducting; only the early metaxylem (EMX) and protoxylem are open. In the bare zones they are open vessels. This leads directly to the dryness of bare zones and the wetness of sheathed zones, and indirectly to the other differences noted. Branch root junctions are shown to be structures of great significance. Besides connecting the branches to the axile systems, they serve also to connect the EMX and LMX vessels, and contain a tracheid barrier which prevents air embolisms entering the main vessels. These discoveries force us to revise the traditional view of water uptake by the root hair zone, and to suggest that much water must also enter bare roots, possibly via the laterals. There is some published evidence for this. The living LMX elements of the sheathed zone accumulate large concentrations of potassium which must joint the transpiration water at the transition to the bare zone. Calculations suggest that this may be only a tenth of the requirement of a mature plant, and that the balance may enter the bare zones with the transpiration water.  相似文献

Studies were carried out on guinea pigs and albino rats, intranasally infected with P. pseudomallei C-141. The cells of bronchovesicular exudate were obtained from animals 1, 4 and 24 hours after infection. Electron microscopy was applied to study the process of interaction of the agent and alveolar macrophages. Bacteria were shown to form a capsule which permitted avoiding phagocytosis, when entering the host respiratory system. Microbes that failed to form a capsule were absorbed by macrophages and enclosed in a phagosome. Then some bacteria were destroyed by the lysosomal enzymes, the other synthesized a capsule, which protected them against the effect of phagolysosome content. There were also such microbes which escaped from a phagosome prior to fusion with lysosomes and parasitized in phagocytic cytoplasma forming a capsule there. By the end of the first 24 hours of observation the intact encapsulated microbe species were found to prevail in the host cells.  相似文献
