Changes in phenolics (PhC - phenolic compounds) measured as UV-absorbing compounds (UVAC) and their localization as well as growth, lipid peroxidation (TBARS level) and proline (Pro) level in three-day-old roots of seedlings (To stage) obtained from hydroprimed (H) and hydroprimed with melatonin (H-MEL) seeds after 2 days of chilling (5 °C) and 2 days of re-warming were examined. H and H-MEL resulted in inhibition of root growth under optimal conditions, but after re-warming, a positive effect of MEL was noted. The results also showed a positive MEL impact on TBARS level already after chilling and especially after re-warming. Exposure of Vigna radiata seedlings to chilling caused a significant increase in Pro level, especially in H-MEL roots, but after re-warming it drastically decreased. Under chilling stress, accumulation of UVAC also decreased. However, after re-warming it returned to the level observed in the roots grown constantly at 25 °C. Even if after re-warming of V. radiata seedlings only slight accumulation of total PhC was observed, phenolic deposits accumulating in the vacuoles of H-MEL roots were completely different from those in the vacuoles of the control and H roots. H-MEL application to the seeds resulted in a significant increase in small granular composite materials, while in the control and H roots, large oval deposits prevailed. Taken together, it is probable that all of these differences were connected with positive effects of MEL on chilled V. radiata seedlings after re-warming.  相似文献

Three-day-old seedlings (t 0 stage) of Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek obtained from seeds hydroprimed (H) and hydroprimed with proline (HPro) were examined. H and HPro slightly improved mung bean seed germination and seedlings growth at 5°C. The best growth was observed in the seedlings obtain from HPro5 (5 mM) seeds in comparison with the seedlings obtained from the control-non-primed seeds and H seeds. Exposure of mung bean seedlings grown from non-primed seeds to chilling for 4 days induced chilling injury: membrane lipid peroxidation, decrease in endogenous proline level and inhibition of growth of roots and hypocotyls. The seedlings obtain from HPro seeds grew better during the time of chilling and after rewarming at 25°C. The possible role of HPro in chilling injury limitation is discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of selenium (Se) supply (0, control; 2.5, 5, 10, or 20 μM) on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv. Polan F1 plants grown under short-term low temperature stress. About 14–16 day-old seedlings, grown at an optimal temperature (25/20°C; day/night), were exposed to short-term chilling stress with a day/night temperature of 10°C/5°C for 24 h, for a further 24 h at 20°C/15°C, and then transferred to 25/20°C (re-warming) for 7 days. Se did not affect the fresh weight (FW) of plants at a concentration of 2.5–10 μM, but in the presence of 20 μM Se, the biomass of shoots significantly decreased. The contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids witnessed no significant change after Se supplementation. Compared with the control, the Se-treated plants showed an increase of proline content in leaves, once after chilling and again after 7 days of re-warming. However, proline levels were much higher immediately after chilling than after re-warming. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the root of plants treated with 2.5–10 μM Se decreased directly after stress. This was in comparison with the plants grown without Se, whereas it increased in roots and leaves of plants exposed to 20 μM Se. Seven days later, the MDA level in the root of plants grown in the presence of Se was still lower than those of plants not treated with Se and generally witnessed no significant change in leaves. Although Se at concentrations of 2.5–10 μM modified the physiological response of cucumber to short-term chilling stress, causing an increase in proline content in leaves and diminishing lipid peroxidation in roots, the resistance of plants to low temperature was not clearly enhanced, as concluded on the basis of FW and photosynthetic pigments accumulation.  相似文献

The impact of melatonin (50 µM L?1) applied to Vigna radiata seeds by hydro-priming on phenolic content, L-phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL) activity, MEL level, antioxidant properties of ethanol extracts as well as electrolyte leakage from chilled and re-warmed Vigna radiata roots of seedlings were examined. Seedlings obtained from non-primed seeds, hydro-primed and hydro-primed with MEL were investigated after 2 days of chilling and 2 days of re-warming. At 25°C, the level of MEL in roots derived from seeds hydro-primed with MEL was 7-fold higher than in roots derived from non-primed seeds. However, the content of MEL significantly decreased in all variants investigated after re-warming, in contrast to PAL activity and phenolic levels, which reached the highest values. The antioxidant capacity of ethanol extracts from chilled and re-warmed roots, determined by ABTS+· assay, was correlated with phenolic content while the reducing ability of these extracts, determined by the FRAP method, correlated with PAL activity. However, both were the highest in rewarmed roots with applied MEL, which was accompanied by a significant decline in electrolyte leakage. Taken together, results may indicate that MEL can play a positive role in plant acclimation to stressful conditions and activation of phenolic pathway by this molecule.  相似文献

Two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars differing in chilling sensitivity, Changbaijiu (chilling-tolerant) and Zhongjian (chilling-sensitive) were pre-treated with 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mM salicylic acid (SA) for 24 h before chilling at 5°C for 1 d. Chilling induced SA accumulation, particularly conjugated SA in both leaves and roots of the two rice cultivars. After SA administration, SA accumulated in the roots of both cultivars at a concentration-dependent manner, whereas only a slight increase was observed in their leaves. Conjugated SA accounted for most of the increase. The beneficial effect of SA treatment on protecting rice seedlings from chilling injury was not observed at any concentration in either cultivar. Pre-treatment with SA even decreased their chilling tolerance confirmed by increased electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation. Further, most of the activities of antioxidant enzymes decreased or remained unchanged in leaves and roots of SA pre-treated seedlings after chilling. These results implied that down-regulation of antioxidant defence might be involved in the reduction of chilling tolerance in SA-pre-treated plants.  相似文献

Chilling tolerance was increased in suspension‐cultured cells and seedlings of maize (Zea mays L. cv ‘Black Mexican Sweet’) grown in media containing glycinebetaine (GB). A triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) reduction test indicated that after a 7 d chilling period at 4 °C, cells treated with 1 mm GB at 26 °C for 1 d had a survival rate (30%) that was twice as high as that of untreated controls. The addition of 2·5 m M GB to the culture medium resulted in maximum chilling tolerance (40%). The results of a cell regrowth assay were consistent with viability determined by the TTC method. In suspension‐cultured cells supplemented with various concentrations of GB, accumulation of GB in the cells was proportional to the GB concentration in the medium and was saturated at a concentration of 240 μ mol (g DW) ? 1. The degree of increased chilling tolerance was positively correlated with the level of GB accumulated in the cells. The increased chilling tolerance was time‐dependent; i.e. it was first observed 3 h after treatment and reached a plateau after 14 h. Feeding seedlings with 2·5 m M GB through the roots also improved their chilling tolerance, as evidenced by the prevention of chlorosis after chilling for 3 d at 4 °C/2 °C. Lipid peroxidation, as expressed by the production of malondialdehyde, was significantly reduced in GB‐treated cells compared with the untreated controls during chilling. These results suggest that increased chilling tolerance may be due, in part, to the reduction of lipid peroxidation of the cell membranes in the presence of GB.  相似文献

Many developmental and physiological changes, including alterations of enzyme activities, occur in plants under low temperature stress. In this study the total ribonuclease activity was determined in crude extracts from root tips of soybean seedlings germinated at 25 °C, subjected to chilling conditions (10°C) and recovered at optimal temperature (25°C). Measurements of RNase activity were performed every 24 hours starting from the third to the 10-th day of growth. We found that chilling caused a considerable increase in ribonuclease activity (in comparison with the control), with an activity peak on the fourth day of the cold treatment. The enzyme activity in root extracts of the plants recovered after cold stress decreased along with the time of recovery. No differences were found in approximate molecular weight (35 kDa) and pH optimum (6.0) for ribonucleases extracted from control and chilled soybean roots.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the mechanism of some physiological processes accompanying acquisition of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) chilling resistance due to seeds hydropriming in the presence of salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, 24-epibrassinolide followed exposition of seeds to short-term heat shock treatment. The seeds were hydroprimed at 25 °C in limited amounts of water or solution of salicylic or jasmonic acid at 10?2, 10?3 and 10?4 M concentration, 24-epibrassinolide at 10?6, 10?8 and 10?10 M concentration. The seeds were incubated for 2 days, subjected to short-term heat shock (45 °C, 2 h) and chilled for 21 days at 0 °C. Sunflower chilling susceptibility and physiological responses were evaluated according to the inhibition of radicle growth, the inhibition of the number of lateral roots formation, the activity of catalase and changes in soluble carbohydrates in seedlings developing for 72 h at 25 °C. Hydropriming and short-term heat shock application explicitly reduced inhibition of roots as well as lateral roots development by allowing the germinating seeds to recover from the growth-inhibiting effects of chilling. Seeds hydropriming in solutions containing salicylic acid, jasmonic acid and 24-epibrassinolide followed heat shock treatment additionally promoted the activity of catalase and sugars metabolism, which stimulated seedlings development and alleviated the decrease of F v/F m caused by chilling conditions. These beneficial effects contributed to increased resistance of sunflower seedlings to chilling stress. The present study demonstrated that the most profitable effect on reducing negative effect of chilling may be achieved by short-term heat shock applied during hydropriming in water supplemented with 24-epiBL (10?8 and 10?10 M) or salicylic acid (10?3 and 10?4 M).  相似文献

Five Coffea genotypes differing in their sensitivity to low positive temperatures were compared with regard to the effects of chilling on membrane integrity, as well as their ability to recover from cold-induced injury upon re-warming. Membrane damage was evaluated through electrolyte leakage, changes in membrane lipid composition and malondialdehyde (MDA) production in control conditions (25/20 degrees C, day/night), after a gradual temperature decrease period to 15/10 degrees C, after chilling treatment (3 nights at 4 degrees C) and upon re-warming to 25/20 degrees C during 6 days (recovery). C. dewevrei showed the highest electrolyte leakage at 15/10 degrees C and after chilling. This was due mainly to lipid degradation observed at 15/10 degrees C, reflecting strong membrane damage. Furthermore, MDA production after chilling conditions indicated the occurrence of lipid peroxidation. A higher susceptibility of C. dewevrei to cold also was inferred from the complete absence of recovery as regards permeability, contrary to what was observed in the remaining plants. Apoat? and Piat? presented significant leakage values after chilling. However, such effects were reversible under recovery conditions. Exposure to cold (15/10 degrees C and 3 x 15/4 degrees C) did not significantly affect membrane permeability in Catuaí and Icatú. Furthermore, no significant MDA production was observed even after chilling treatments in Apoat?, Piat?, Catuaí and Icatú, suggesting that the four genotypes had the ability to maintain membrane integrity and/or repair membrane damage caused by low temperatures. Apoat?, Piat? and, to a lower extent, Catuaí, were able to cope with gradual temperature decrease through an enhanced lipid biosynthesis. After acclimation, Piat? and Catuaí showed a lowering of digalactosyldiacylglycerol to monogalactosyldiacylglycerol ratio (MGDG/DGDG) as a result of enhanced DGDG synthesis, which represents an increase in membrane stability. The same was observed in Apoat? after chilling, in spite of phospholipids decrease. The studied parameters clearly indicated that chilling induced irreversible membrane damage in C. dewevrei. We also concluded that increased lipid synthesis, lower MGDG/DGDG ratio, and changes in membrane unsaturation occurring during acclimation to low temperatures may be critical factors in maintenance of cellular integrity under chilling.  相似文献

Exposure of coffee to low temperatures caused growth inhibition, changes in metabolic rates, and membrane alterations. Root tissue exposed to 10 °C evolved significantly lower rates of metabolic heat compared with controls grown at 25 °C, and the values were closely associated with the observed root growth inhibition. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of intact tissues showed that the spin probe 5-doxylstearic acid was capable to intercalate within the cellular membrane lipids. Indeed, at the depth of the 5th carbon atoms of the alkyl chains, the nitroxide radical detected more rigid membranes in seedlings exposed to 10 °C compared with 25 °C treated samples. Ascorbate peroxidase and catalase activities did not show appreciable changes under chilling conditions, while guaiacol peroxidase activity increased 55 % compared to the control. On the other hand, glutathione reductase activity decreased, in parallel to a significant decline in the capacity to reduce triphenyl-tetrazolium. Our results showed a marked correlation between lipid peroxidation and root tissue damage, which seemed to be associated with increased membrane rigidity. The nucleolar vacuole formation in soybean root meristematic cells from seedlings grown 3 d at temperature 25 °C (control), 3 d at temperature 25 °C and then transferred to 10 °C (chilling) for 4 d, and after recovery for 1.5, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h at 25 °C were observed on semi-thin sections. Simultaneously, autoradiographic studies with 3H-uridine on squashed preparations were carried out. During recovery of plants, the number of vacuolated nucleoli increased gradually from 24 % after 1.5 h up to 40 % after 24 h, while in the control there were 18 % of nucleoli with vacuoles and after 4-d chilling only 5 %. Labelling of cells during 20-min incubation in 3H-uridine and during 80-min post-incubation in non-radioactive medium was increased in recovered plants in comparison with the control and chilled plants. The conclusion has been drawn that nucleolar vacuoles in soybean plants are formed as a result of migration of granular component accumulated in nucleolus during 4-d chilling.  相似文献

Exposure of plants to chilling (low temperatures above freezing) limits growth and development in all environments outside the lowest latitudes. Cell ultrastructure and morphometric studies may allow associations to be made between chilling-induced changes at the ultrastructural level, molecular events and their physiological consequences. We examined changes in the shape, size and membrane organization of the organelles of mesophyll cells in Arabidopsis thaliana (Col 0), a cold-resistant species, after subjecting 6-week-old plants grown at normal growth temperatures to chilling (2.5–4°C; 14-h dark/10-h light cycle) for 6, 24 and 72 h and after a re-warming period of 50 h. No ultrastructural differences were seen in the first 6 h of chilling but after 24 h we observed swollen and rounded chloroplasts with larger starch grains and dilated thylakoids compared to control plants. By 72 h, chilling had resulted in a large accumulation of starch in chloroplasts, an apparent crowding of the cytosol and a lower abundance of peripheral reticulum than in the controls. The average area per chloroplast in cell sections increased after 72-h chilling while the number of chloroplasts remained the same. Ring-shaped and other morphologically aberrant mitochondria were present in significantly higher abundance in plants given 72 h chilling than in the controls. Plant re-warming for 50 h reduced chloroplast size to those of the controls and returned mitochondria to standard morphology, but peripheral reticulum remained less abundant than in plants never given a cold treatment. The near full return to normal ultrastructure upon plant re-warming indicates that the morphological changes may be part of acclimation to cold.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop the method for increasing resistance of sunflower seedlings ‘Wielkopolski’ to chilling. Seeds were conditioned at 25 °C for 2 days in water to 15, 20 and 25 % moisture content or in salicylic or jasmonic acid in concentration of 10?2; 10?3 and 10?4 M or brassinolide in concentration of 10?6; 10?8 and 10?10–15 % moisture content. After 2 days of incubation the conditioned seeds were heat shocked at 45 °C for 0, 30, 60, 120 and 240 min and 5 mm seedlings were exposed to chilling at 0 °C for 21 days. The effectiveness of the methods was assessed by evaluation of roots growth in Phytotoxkit Microbiotest, changes in the activity of dehydrogenases, the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane and formation of polysomes after seedling were returned to 25 °C for 72 h. Seeds were conditioned at 25 °C for 2 days in water to 15 % moisture content and then heat shocked at 45 °C for 2 h decreased chilling injury of seedlings expressed by subsequent growth of the roots, electrolyte leakage, dehydrogenases activity and polysomes formation. Application of heat shock of 45 °C for 2 h during seed conditioning additionally provided seedling protection against subsequent chilling conditions. Brasinolide, salicylic acid or jasmonic acid applied during seeds conditioning exhibited further beneficial effect on seedling resistance to chilling. The most pronounced effect was obtained due to seed conditioning to 15 % moisture content in solutions of brassinolide in concentration of 10?8 M. After 2 days of imbibition treated in this way seeds were exposed to heat shock at 45 °C for 2 h. The role of physiological events in improvement of sunflower chilling tolerance are discussed.  相似文献

We studied cadmium effect on the respiratory pathways ratio in the organs of barley (Hordeum distichum L., cv. Novichok) plants grown in water culture at two temperature regimes. Mineral nutrients were supplied daily in exponentially increasing amounts in order to provide for steady-state growth. CdSO4 (30, 60, or 100 μmol/l) was added to nutrient solution at a single time in the beginning of the exponential growth period (19 days after germination). In further 6 days, the relative growth rate and biomass accumulation declined stronger with the increase in the cadmium concentration in plants grown at 13/8°C (day/night) than at 21/17°C (day/night). Cadmium suppressed root respiration (down to 60% of control) stronger than leaf respiration, and the roots manifested a higher sensitivity to the inhibitor of alternative oxidase, salicylhydroxamic acid. The respiratory pathways ratio in the roots occurred against the background of activated lipid peroxidation (POL). The highest POL activity and the highest proportion of alternative respiration pathway (AP) (up to 46% of total respiration) were observed in the roots in the presence of the highest cadmium concentration (100 μM) under lower temperature (13/8°C). Thus, high cadmium concentrations affected strongly the total rate of respiration and respiratory pathways ratio. Growth temperature modulated Cd effects on respiration. AP activation is one of the mechanisms for maintenance of root cell homeostasis under cadmium-induced stress.  相似文献

Two bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) cultivars, differing in their response to chilling, were exposed to three levels of root‐zone temperatures. Gas exchange, shoot and root phenology, and the pattern of change of the central metabolites and secondary metabolites caffeate and benzoate in the leaves and roots were profiled. Low root‐zone temperature significantly inhibited gaseous exchange, with a greater effect on the sensitive commercial pepper hybrid (Canon) than on the new hybrid bred to enhance abiotic stress tolerance (S103). The latter was less affected by the treatment with respect to plant height, shoot dry mass, root maximum length, root projected area, number of root tips and root dry mass. More carbon was allocated to the leaves of S103 than nitrogen at 17°C, while in the roots at 17°C, more nitrogen was allocated and the ratio between C/N decreased. Metabolite profiling showed greater increase in the root than in the leaves. Leaf response between the two cultivars differed significantly. The roots accumulated stress‐related metabolites including γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA), proline, galactinol and raffinose and at chilling (7°C) resulted in an increase of sugars in both cultivars. Our results suggest that the enhanced tolerance of S103 to root cold stress, reflected in the relative maintenance of shoot and root growth, is likely linked to a more effective regulation of photosynthesis facilitated by the induction of stress‐related metabolism.  相似文献

Abstract Root fatty acid composition, photosynthesis, leaf water potentials, stomatal resistances, leaf specific weights, and root: shoot ratios of soybean were measured in two temperature regimes. Groups of soybean plants were grown in controlled chambers of the Duke University Phytotron under two thermoperiods. One group of the plants was grown from seed for 3 weeks in either 29/23°C or 17/11°C thermoperiods, and another group was grown for 2 weeks in 29/23°C and then transferred to the 17/11°C thermoperiod where it remained for 8 days. Broccoli was also grown in either 29/23°C or 17/11°C thermoperiods. Soybean roots contained more unsaturated fatty acids than broccoli roots, although broccoli roots showed a larger increase in unsaturation than soybean roots with decreased temperature. The fatty acid unsaturation in the roots of soybean began to increase rapidly after the temperature regime was changed. The increase was in the new roots produced in the cold regime rather than in the pre-existing roots. The soybean leaf water and osmotic potentials decreased about 0.4 MPa, beginning one day after the transfer from 29/23°C to 17/11°C, but recovered significantly after 8 d. Plants grown at 17/11 °C had lower rates of photosynthesis and adaxial stomatal resistances, but higher root: shoot ratios and specific leaf weights compared to plants grown at 29/23°C. Plants grown and maintained at 29/23°C showed a steady increase in photosynthetic rates over the 8-d experimental period, whether rates were measured in 1 mol m?3 or 9 mol m?3 oxygen. Plants transferred to 17/11°C however maintained constant rates of photosynthesis at 1 mol m?3 O2, whereas at 9 mol m?3 rates declined for 2 d then were constant for the remaining 6 d of the experimental period. These results suggest that changes in membrane fatty acid unsaturation is an important aspect of plant acclimation to chilling temperatures in terms of maintaining root permeability and water uptake. However, the degree of unsaturation is not a good indicator of differences in chilling tolerance among species. The apparent acclimation of photorespiration to a constant percentage of photosynthesis suggests a role of photorespiration in the plant.  相似文献

Relative nuclear DNA contents in cortex parenchyma cells in root segments of 3- and 7-d-old soybean seedlings grown at 25 °C and in plants grown for 3 d at 25 °C, and then for 4 d at 10 °C, were determined with cytophotometry. Measurements revealed that in each variant the cortex cell nuclei with DNA content between 2C and 8C were in all the examined segments and nuclei with 8C – 16C DNA appeared in higher parts of roots. However, in chilled plant cells the number of 8C – 16C DNA nuclei was very low. Therefore, chilling inhibited endoreplication in comparison with plants grown at 25 °C for 7 d, and even reduced endopolyploidy level as compared to the initial seedlings, i.e. 3-d-old plants. DNA contents in root hairs grown at 25 °C (control) and in root hairs emerged at 10 °C were also determined. In controls 4C – 8C DNA nuclei predominated while in chilled plants an additional population of 2C – 4C DNA appeared. Thus a reduction of DNA synthesis was brought about by low temperature. The occurrence of an intermediate DNA contents besides those with full endoreplication cycles suggests the possibility of differential DNA replication. This suggestion seems to be supported by the lack of 3H-thymidine incorporation into root hair nuclei at the examined developmental stage both in control and chilled root hairs. The same number, but larger, chromocentric lumps in polyploid cortex cell nuclei of higher root zones, in comparison to meristematic nuclei, suggests that endoreduplication process occurred. The effect of root-zone temperature on Phytophthora cryptogea root rot was studied in tomato cv. Counter grown under winter and summer conditions in rockwool culture. A nutrient temperature of 25°C resulted in increased root initiation and growth, higher in winter-grown than in summer-grown plants. Rhizosphere zoospore populations were greatly reduced at 25°C and above. Growth of P. cryptogea in vitro was optimal between 20°C and 25°C and completely suppressed at 30°C. Encystment was enhanced by increased temperatures above 20°C. Zoospore release in vitro occurred in cultures maintained at constant temperatures in the absence of the normal chilling stimulus. Optimal release was at 10°C; no zoospores were released at 30°C. Inoculated, winter-grown tomato plants maintained at 15°C developed acute aerial symptoms and died after 21 days. Comparable plants grown at a root-zone temperature of 25°C remained symptomless for the 3-months duration of the experiment. Summer-grown infected plants at the higher root temperature wilted but did not die. Enhanced temperature was ineffective as a curative treatment in summer-grown plants with established infection. Aerial symptoms of Phytophthora infection are seen as a function of the net amount of available healthy root. With high root zone temperatures this is determined by new root production and decreased inoculum and infection.  相似文献

The shelf-life of fresh-cut tomatoes mainly depends on loss of tissue integrity and firmness that occurs also in intact fruits after long-term cold storage due to chilling injury. Round-fruit tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cv. Jama were stored in 1.1-L plastic (polyethylene) fresh-cut produce containers as 10.0-mm-thick tomato slices and as intact tomatoes at 4 ± 0.5 °C. The aim of this work was to study the loss of membrane integrity and biochemical processes involved in membrane disruption. Electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation were studied at different stages of maturity: mature green, pink (PK), fully ripe and two different storage temperatures: 4 and 15 °C. The tomato slices of PK stage stored at 4 °C did not show changes for both parameters, while significant increase in membrane leakage and lipid peroxidation was observed at 15 °C, especially after 24 h of storage. The enzymes showed a simultaneous increase in their activities with a rise in electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation after 7 days of storage. Finally, phospholipase C (PLC) and phospholipase D (PLD) were investigated for intact fruit and tomato slices stored at 4 °C. The PLC had higher activity compared with PLD. In conclusion, the loss of membrane integrity in fresh-cut tomatoes is mainly affected by ripening stages, storage temperature and duration. The wounds enhance the PLC and PLD activities and they play a role late during storage.  相似文献

The shoots of cultivated tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. T5) wilt if their roots are exposed to chilling temperatures of around 5 °C. Under the same treatment, a chilling‐tolerant congener (Lycopersicon hirsutum LA 1778) maintains shoot turgor. To determine the physiological basis of this differential response, the effect of chilling on both excised roots and roots of intact plants in pressure chambers were investigated. In excised roots and intact plants, root hydraulic conductance declined with temperature to nearly twice the extent expected from the temperature dependence of the viscosity of water, but the response was similar in both species. The species differed markedly, however, in stomatal behaviour: in L. hirsutum, stomatal conductance declined as root temperatures were lowered, whereas the stomata of L. esculentum remained open until the roots reached 5 °C, and the plants became flaccid and suffered damage. Grafted plants with the shoots of one genotype and roots of another indicated that the differential stomatal behaviour during root chilling has distinct shoot and root components.  相似文献
