One specimen of the sand-burrowing nudibranch Armina tigrinaRafinesque was collected from South Carolina in June. The specimendeposited a single egg mass of approximately 6500 white eggswhich developed into lecithotrophic veligers in 8 days at 23°C.Of the veligers which metamorphosed, 9 lived 4–5.5 months(i.e. the life cycle was subannual). Eight individuals reachedsexual maturity in about 80 days. Copulation began at a bodylength of 24 mm and oviposition at 28 mm. During the 1.5 monthegg-laying period, each individual laid 2–4 wavy egg masseswith 2000–7000 eggs per mass. Death followed oviposition.Average growth rate of fed and starved pre-ovipositional nudibranchswas 3.4% and 0.9% per day respectively. Growth rate of ovipositingspecimens was 0.6% or less per day. Based on average feedingrates, each nudibranch consumed approximately 1.6 g damp weightof Renilla reniformis (one small colony) between metamorphosisand egg laying and 6.1 g damp weight (about two average colonies)from egg laying to death. Feeding efficiency is presumably increasedby interlocking and abutting radular teeth. Egg diameters reportedfor Armina tigrina from South Carolina and Florida were 199µm and 82 µm respectively. This difference suggeststhe existence of two species of Armina or ne species with twogeographically separated developmental types. Nuptial gifts and sexual selection in photinus fireflies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The phenomenon of nuptial gift transfer during mating occursacross a remarkably wide range of taxa, and such male donationsare likely to influence both pre-copulatory and post-copulatorysexual selection. This paper reviews what is known about nuptialgifts in Photinus fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), and discussesthe adaptive significance of spermatophores in firefly matingsystems. During copulation Photinus males transfer a spiral, gelatinous spermatophore to the female: sperm are released intothe female's spermatheca for storage, while the remainder ofthe spermatophore disintegrates within a specialized gland.Radiolabelling studies indicate that male-derived protein isused to help provision the female's developing oocytes, andmultiply-mated females show increased fecundity. As most Photinusadults do not feed, these studies suggest that females shouldcontinue to forage for matings to supplement their diminishinglarval reserves, even after they have gained sufficient spermto fertilize their eggs. Male spermatophore mass declines acrosssequential matings, and smaller spermatophores are associatedwith lower paternity success in situations where males competefor fertilizations. Declining spermatophore size across sequentialmatings may thus lead to diminishing reproductive returns forfirefly males. Taken together, these results suggest that seasonalchanges in nuptial gift availability may contribute to reversalsof traditional courtship roles, with male choice and female-femalecompetition occurring as spermatophore availability declines.  相似文献

The evolution of egg size in the brood parasitic cuckoos   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We compared genera of nonparasitic cuckoos and two groups ofparasitic cuckoos: those raised together with host young ("nonejectors")and those in which the newly hatched cuckoo either ejects thehost eggs or chicks, or kills the host young ("ejectors"). Nonejectorsare similar to their hosts in body size and parasitize largerhosts than do ejectors, which parasitize hosts much smallerthan themselves. In both types of parasite, the cuckoo's eggtends to match the host eggs in size. To achieve this, nonejectorshave evolved a smaller egg for their body size than have nonparasiticcuckoos, and ejectors have evolved an even smaller egg. Amongejector cuckoo genera, larger cuckoos have larger eggs relativeto the eggs of their hosts, and the relationship between cuckooegg volume (mass of the newly-hatched cuckoo) and host egg volume(mass to be ejected) did not differ from that predicted by weight-liftingallometry. However, comparing among Cuculus cuckoo species, the allometric slope differed from the predicted, so it is notclear that egg size is related to the need to give the cuckoochick sufficient strength for ejection. Comparing the two mostspeciose ejector genera, Chrysococcyx cuckoos (smaller and parasitizedome-nesting hosts) lay eggs more similar in size to their host'seggs than do Cuculus cuckoos (larger and parasitize open cup–nestinghosts). Closer size-matching of host eggs in Chrysococcyx mayreflect the following: (1) selection to reduce adult body massto facilitate entry through small domed nest holes to lay, and(2) less need for a large egg, because longer incubation periodsin dome-nesting hosts allow the young cuckoo more time to growbefore it need eject host eggs.  相似文献

Females of the dragonfly Erythemis simplicicollis (Say) (Odonata, Libellulidae) store enough sperm to fertilize 6–13 clutches of eggs laid on consecutive days. Nonetheless, they usually mate one or more times per day. Males wait for females at ponds containing surface vegetation on which the females lay eggs. Some males defend vegetation while other act as satellites. After mating, both types of males attempt to guard females against takeover by other males. Sperm precedence by male E. simplicicollis was studied using sterility produced by gamma irradiation to label sperm. After a dose-response analysis, males receiving a dose of 25 kiloroentgens (>99.9% sterile) were returned to their home pond as territory residents and satellites. Both types of males fertilized an average of 99.5% (range 97.3–100%) of the female's remaining clutch. After mating with a sterile male, females were isolated in a large cage, and eggs collected for several consecutive days. These clutches revealed that sperm mixing in the bursa of the females is essentially complete after 24 to 48 h and that the last male to mate had replaced an average of more than 57–75% of the sperm stored by female from previous matings. Thus, the last sperm in is the first sperm out fertilizing essentially all of the eggs laid soon (5–6 min) after the mating. Sperm from the most recent mating competes for fertilizations with sperm stored from previous matings only if the female oviposits on the following day without remating.  相似文献

Pseudocalanus species are important contributors to the secondaryproduction of the northern hemisphere mid- to high-latitudeoceans. In the coastal Gulf of Alaska, Pseudocalanus are presentyear round and are represented by three species. In 2001, Pseudocalanusmimus was the dominant Pseudocalanus species on the shelf duringspring and summer, comprising 30–100% of the total, whilePseudocalanus newmani dominated in Prince William Sound (10–90%).Pseudocalanus minutus were only abundant in Prince William Soundduring early spring. Egg production (by number and volume) wasa function of female prosome length and decreased from springto summer; however, significant variability was attributableto regional influences that were independent of size. For thesame sized female, P. newmani produced more eggs per clutchthan P. mimus. Pseudocalanus mimus, however, tended to havea larger mean egg size than P. newmani. Consequently, clutchvolumes of the two species were indistinguishable. Pseudocalanusegg production rates (EPRs) (eggs female–1 day–1)were lower in July and August (ca. 2–4) than April andMay (ca. 1–9), but total egg production by the population(eggs day–1) was nearly equivalent for the two time periodsdue to higher female concentrations in summer.  相似文献

Resting egg production and oviducal cycling were investigatedfor the calanoid copepods Arctodiaptomus alpinus and Acanthodiaptomusdenticornis both in the laboratory and in a small karstic alpinelake by making a census of the number of eggs produced and theproportion of females in each of four morphologically distinguishedreproductive conditions each day in the laboratory or duringa 2–3 week period in lake enclosures. In the laboratory, individuals were maintained on a mixed diet of natural phytoplanktonat constant temperatures of 4, 10, 15 and 20C, respectively. Both species differed considerably in their temperature requirementsfor reproduction. Lifetime fecundity was highest at 10C in A.alpinusand at 20C in A.denticornis, with up to 327 eggs –1 spawnedin the former and up to 582 eggs –1 in the latter species.Unfavorable temperatures were further reflected in an increasein egg mortality and the allocation of time spent in a post-reproductivephase, as well as in a decrease of longevity. Increasing temperaturesenhanced egg production rates due to decreasing clutch productionperiods, although clutch size was negatively correlated withtemperature. Maximum rates reached 5.88 and 7.98 eggs –1day–1 in the laboratory, and 0.73 and 0.55 eggs –1day–1 in enclosures in A.alpinus and A.denticornis, respectively.Egg production rates and clutch size were clearly governed bynutritional conditions in the lake, but were less affected byfood supply in the laboratory. Here, rates of egg productionwere adapted to improving food supply by increasing the frequencyof spawning events, rather than the number of eggs per clutch. No correlation was found between female body size and reproductiveparameters in the laboratory. A very low proportion of totalclutch production resulted in clutches composed of subitaneouseggs, i.e. 0.14% in A.denticornis and 1.20% in A.alpinus. Oviducalphase duration allocations indicate that there exists a temperatureoptimum for gamete maturation.  相似文献

Reproductive characters and growth of Punctum pygmaeum wereinvestigated under laboratory conditions. Eggs were laid singlyat intervals of 2–8 days. Egg size averaged 0.41 by 0.50mm. Due to a variable period of egg retention, newly depositedeggs contained differently developed embryos resulting in anincubation period varying from 1 to 34 days. Each snail on averagelaid 6.0 eggs (range 1–16 eggs) during its life. Egg productionrate and hatching success in individuals kept in isolation werethe same as in individuals kept in pairs. Hatchlings measured0.49 mm in shell breadth. Snails grew throughout their life, but the growth rate declined significantly at a shell breadthof 1.3–1.4 mm, the point at which the onset of sexualmaturity occurred. Comparison of reproductive characters ofsnails living in leaf litter revealed that very small-sizedspecies produce few, but in relation to their shell size largeeggs, which they oviposit singly. *Present address: Zoological Institute, University of Basel,Rhein-sprung 9. Annual variations of egg production rate (EPR) and clutch sizeof Calanus sinicus, as well as body size of females (prosomelength and dry weight), were investigated at a series of stationsin the Southern Yellow Sea by onboard incubation. Calanus sinicuswas spawning in all the 11 cruises investigated, and the annualvariation of EPR was bimodal. Monthly average EPR was highestfrom May to July, respectively, 5.97, 5.36 and 6.30 eggs female–1d–1, then decreased dramatically to only 1.37 eggs female–1d–1 in August and attained the lowest 1.07 eggs female–1d–1 in October. In November, average EPR increased againto 4.31 eggs female–1 d–1. Seasonal variation ofclutch size was similar to EPR, except that it decreased graduallyafter August rather than dramatically as did EPR. Prosome lengthof females was maximum in May and minimum in October, but dryweight was highest in November. Monthly average EPR correlatedbetter with prosome length than dry weight, while clutch sizewas rather determined by dry weight of females. It is suggestedthat egg production of C. sinicus was active during two discontinuousperiods when both surface and bottom temperature fell into itsfavorite range (i.e. 10–23°C), and different reproductivestrategies were adopted in these two reproductive peaks: otherthan the highest EPR, longer prosome length was also achievedby C. sinicus from May to July, while females in November developedshorter bodies but accumulated more energy for reproduction.  相似文献

I investigated two possible reasons for remating in female Plodia interpunctella: i) females remate to obtain sufficient sperm to maintain fertility; and ii) male investment in non-sperm components increases female fecundity and longevity. The number of sperm and the mass of the spermatophore transferred by males decreases on successive matings. Sperm numbers and potential male investment were varied by allowing females to mate either once or twice with males either on their first or second mating. Females receiving a single small spermatophore containing few sperm (from a male on his second mating) had sufficient sperm to fertilize all their eggs. Females did not show increased fecundity or longevity as a result of obtaining more spermatophore material. I discuss why females remate when they already have sufficient sperm to fertilize all their eggs.  相似文献

Retusa obtusa held individually in the laboratory carried largeoocytes in the gonad but did not spawn in December-late January. In late Jan-early Feb, however, the first few individuals producedbatches of 8–17 eggs and, by early February, most individualswere producing means of 2–4 eggs d–1 and maximain late Feb of <7.9 d–1. Spawning declined to low levelsin few individuals in late March. By early April, spawning hadvirtually ceased prior to the drastic loss of adults in thepopulation by May. Larger R. obtusa generally produced more eggs than smaller onesand the few specimens shorter than 3.8 mm produced markedlyfewer than those of 3.8–5.0 mm shell length. Twenty of the 34 R. obtusa held in the main breeding period(4 sets started 29 Jan-3 Mar) spawned in 3 or more successiveweeks whereas only 6 of them failed to spawn in 2 consecutiveweeks, so indicating that several successive batches of eggsare commonly produced. Yet in virtually all individuals (exceptat the start of breeding) more eggs were produced in the firstweek of captivity than subsequently. These first-week valuesimply total production by individuals in the spawning seasonof some 112-305 eggs comprising about 2.8-7.6 mg dry weightor, by the Forth estuary population, of 26880-73200 eggs m–2comprising 0.67-1.83 g dry weight m–2. Spatial and seasonal egg production rates (Er) and egg hatchingsuccess in the copepods Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus helgolandicuswere measured in the North Sea from March to September. Foodavailability was monitored by chlorophyll and protist concentrationsand three size fractions of seston fatty acids. Seasonal andspatial distribution and production differed between the species.Calanus finmarchicus was found only offshore of the 50-m isobath, with decreasing Er (37–28 eggs female–1 day–1)from March to July. Calanus helgolandicus had two abundancepeaks, in spring and autumn, with a low in May during whichtime the highest Er were observed (38 eggs female–1 day–1).At other times, Er in C. helgolandicus remained lower than inC. finmarchicus (  相似文献

A mature motile mouse spermatozoon was microinjected under the zona pellucida of mouse eggs. Twenty-five percent of eggs were fertilized, and 54% of these developed to normal fetuses or to term after transfer to pseudopregnant recipients. These results provide a quantitative estimate of the minimum proportion of spermatozoa in a population that are able to contribute to normal development--at least 54% of mature individuals that were able to fertilize the egg after microinjection, or at least 13 1/2% (25% of 54%) of the total population of mature sperm. The production of normal young shows that sperm microinjection is a feasible means for the treatment of severe male infertility in the human and in other species.  相似文献

We have examined the relationship between sperm adhesion and fertilization in the cross species insemination of Arbacia punctulata eggs by Strongylocentrotus purpuratus sperm. As previously reported (Kinsey et al., 1980) the addition of S. purpuratus egg jelly results in induction of the acrosome reaction in sperm and significant numbers of S. purpuratus sperm adhere to A. punctulata eggs. However, in the absence of S. purpuratus egg jelly, S. purpuratus sperm fail to bind to A. punctulata eggs. Although at least 200 S. purpuratus sperm bind to an A. punctulata egg in the presence of S. purpuratus jelly, less than 8% of the eggs are fertilized. The adhesion of S. purpuratus sperm meets the same functional criteria as homologous A. punctulata sperm-egg adhesion. Electron microscopy shows that S. purpuratus sperm that have undergone the acrosome reaction adhere to A. punctulata eggs by their bindin-coated acrosomal process in a manner that is morphologically identical to that observed with homologous A. punctulata sperm. We have also compared the ability of S. purpuratus and A. punctulata sperm to fuse and fertilize with A. punctulata eggs after removal of the vitelline layer. Using high levels of sperm of either species, heterologous as well as homologous fertilization is readily detectable. Under these conditions, where stable binding is not demonstrable, there is no difference in the ability of S. purpuratus and A. punctulata sperm to fertilize A. punctulata eggs. These observations suggest that the failure of S. purpuratus sperm to fertilize A. punctulata eggs under normal conditions may be due to their inability to penetrate the vitelline layer so that they can fuse with the egg plasma membrane. In relation to the possible mechanism of vitelline layer penetration, we have also investigated the mode of action of chymostatin, an inhibitor of chymotrypsin that has been reported to inhibit fertilization of sea urchin eggs (Hoshi et al., 1979). Our findings suggest that the fertilization inhibitory activity of chymostatin is not related to its antichymotrypsin activity. Rather, it appears that this inhibition is due to the induction of an abnormal acrosome reaction in sperm that precludes formation of the acrosome process.  相似文献

Investigations of the reproductive biology of Cyclops vicinusrevealed that mated females oscillate between gravid and nongravidreproductive conditions. The gravid condition can be dividedin two recognizable phases: gravid/nonovigerous and gravid/ovigerous,the former phase being shortest. The maturation of new oocytestakes place when the old egg sacs are still being carried; thisensures a rapid clutch succession. Females which remain unmated, extrude few eggs, in no case complete egg sacs, and remain gravidthus conserving oocytes. Females which mate only once, showa similar reproductive pattern (clutch size and clutch succession)to those which remain combined with males, and thus have theopportunity to remate, but tend to produce fewer clutches. Malesare able to fertilize 3–4 females day–1. Matingcapacity of males is possibly limited by the time needed tofill a new spermatophore. Short-term starvation (5 days) lengthenedclutch-to-clutch periods and diminished clutch size. When thestarvation period started in the gravid/ovigerous phase, a normalclutch was extruded but no new oocytes matured during starvation, indicating that the energy for egg maturations is provided inthe first part of the reproductive cycle.  相似文献

The life-cycle, growth characteristics and reproductive activityof Achatina fulica were studied in laboratory culture. Six generationshave been completed. Sexual maturity is reached as early as5 months of age, with a peak in egg production between 210–270days. Egg clutches contain 100–200 eggs which hatch synchronouslywithin a 24-hour period. The incubation period (days betweenoviposition and hatching) was determined exactly. The rangeof incubation times was 1–25 days, due to a variable degreeof ovoviviparity exhibited by the snail. The success of laboratoryculture provides a basis for experimental studies in developmentalneurobiology utilizing Achatina fulica. *Present address and to whom correspondence should be addressed:Jerry Lewis Neuromuscular Research Center, UCLA School of Medicine,Los Angeles, California 90025 U.S.A. The rates of egg production of individually reared females ofCentropager typicus have been observed from the moulting C5-adultto death under constant conditions of food (10 000 cells ml–1of Hymenomonas elongara) and temperature (15 and 20°C).Preliminaiy experiments showed that virgin females could produceunfecunded eggs, but that the distinctive spines of the eggsof C.typicus were only obtained after fecundation occurred.High and continuous egg production needs several matings, andthe following experiments were run with a couple. In all experiments, both males and females fed and produced faecal pellets. Thefemales show a high variability in spawning life periods, inspawning rhythms, in daily rates and, consequently, in cumulatednumbers of eggs spawned during their life. The highest dailyrates of egg production were obtained in the first half of thefemale's life, and were as high at 20°C as at 15°C.Nevertheless, the females survived longer at 15°C than at20°C, and finally produced 47.6% more eggs during theirwhole life at 15°C than at 20°C, which can be partiallydue to the difference in size (almost 10% bigger at 15°Cthan at 20°C). The production of faecal pellets occurredduring the whole of life and was more regular than egg production, with a maximum daily rate in the first part of life, and showeda decrease until death. The decline in daily egg productionwith age was parallel to the decrease in daily faecal pelletproduction. The daily production of faecal pellets was higherat 15°C than at 20°C. At 20°C, a good correlationwas observed between the total egg production per female andthe total faecal pellet production per female. The individual-basedegg production rates of our experiments have been compared withrates obtained in different conditions by several authors, andwere lower than in other published studies, probably due tothe food offered. We emphasize the difficulties of comparingresults which have been obtained for the entire life of thefemales with those based on daily egg production. The totalegg production of a female is an important parameter in regardto the population d because it fixes the maximal rate of losses(mortality plus dispersion) for which a population can continueto develop.  相似文献

Daphnia iongicephala were reared from early embryogenesis inthe presence or absence of crest-inducing kairomones releasedby Anisops gratus (Notonectidae) and from birth in one of fiveconcentrations of the organochiorine pesticide, endosulfan (0,0.1, 1.0, 10 or 100 g 1–1 The morphologyof the daphnidswas measured 3 days after birth and on production of the firstbrood of eggs. The reproductive parameters, first brood size, age at first reproduction, mean egg volume and total egg volume, were also measured. Endosulfan significantly induced crest developmentin 3-day-old daphnids at 0.1, 1.0 and 10 g 1– in thepresence and absence of Anisops kairomone, although crest sizein the absence of kairomone was only marginally greater thancontrols. A concentration of 10 pg 1–1 endosulfan significantlyenhanced crest growth of kairomone-exposed daphnids at maturity. The Anisops kairomone alone induced a large crest in D.iongicephola, reduced first brood size, mean egg volume and total egg volume, and increased age at maturity. The coefficient of variationof mean egg volume was significantly reduced by Anisops kairomone. It is hypothesized that endosulfan enhances crest developmentbyinhibition of .  相似文献

The lobate ctenophore, Mnemiopsis leidyi, consumed eggs andlarvae of the bay anchovy, Anchoa mitchilli, in laboratory experiments. This ctenophore exhibited a type I functional response to increasesin egg densities without reaching saturation at high prey densities.Clearance rate increased with increasing experimental containervolume. There was a 3-fold increase in the volume of water clearedby 2.0–2.5-cm ctenophores and a >5-fold increase for4.5–5.0-cm ctenophores in 15–1 versus 100–200–1containers. Clearance rate was dependent on tenophore lengthbut was probably underestimated for the larger animals due tocontainer effects. The presence of various densities of alternateprey, Acartia hudsonica or Anemia sp. nauplii, in addition toAnchoa mitchilli eggs did not affect the clearance rates onthe eggs alone. Comparison of clearance rates of 2.0–2.5-cmctenophores on various ages of starved and fed bay anchovy larvaeindicated that predation may be higher on yolk-sac larvae thanon eggs but decreases as the larvae grow. After 3 days posthatch starved anchovy larvae become more vulnerable to predationthan fed larvae. The ctenophore, M.leidyi has the potentialto inflict substantial predation pressure on early stages inthe life history of bay anchovy. 1 Present address: University of Maryland, Center for Environmentaland Estuarine Studies, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, POBox 38, Solomons, MD 20688-0038, USA  相似文献

Sperm are limited in the Bengalese finch; three copulationsin 3 h result in a 95% reduction in sperm numbers transferred.Recovery from sperm depletion occurs within 24 h. Pairs in captivitycopulate about 15 times per clutch and about twice each dayin the 5 days before egg laying. Sixty-eight percent of behaviorallysuccessful copulations result in sperm transfer, with some malesperforming consistently better than others. Single ejaculatescontain 2.9 x 106 sperm, the testes (combined mass: 0.103 g)comprise 0.7% of male mass, and the seminal glomera hold sufficientsperm (7.7 x 106) for two or three inseminations. The intervalsbetween successive copulations were significantly more uniformthan expected by chance, indicating that males allocate theirejaculates prudently. Conflicts of interest between males andfemales within monogamous pairs exist over the timing and frequencyof copulation; the resolution of these conflicts is discussed.[Behav Ecol 1991;2:267–275]  相似文献
