Neural networks have received much attention in recent years mostly by non-statisticians. The purpose of this paper is to incorporate neural networks in a non-linear regression model and obtain maximum likelihood estimates of the network parameters using a standard Newton-Raphson algorithm. We use maximum likelihood estimators instead of the usual back-propagation technique and compare the neural network predictions with predictions of quadratic regression models and with non-parametric nearest neighbor predictions. These comparisons are made using data generated from a variety of functions. Because of the number of parameters involved, neural network models can easily over-fit the data, hence validation of results is crucial.  相似文献

A binary random variable depends on nonstochastic covariates through a density function. The equations that determine the maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters are intractable and difficult to solve iteratively. We develop modified maximum likelihood estimators for both logistic and nonlo-gistic densities. These estimators are explicit functions of sample observations and are, therefore, easy to compute. They are asymptotically fully efficient and, for small samples, are almost fully efficient. The appropriateness of the logistic density function is also discussed.  相似文献

A semiparametric regression model for longitudinal data is considered. The empirical likelihood method is used to estimate the regressioncoefficients and the baseline function, and to construct confidenceregions and intervals. It is proved that the maximum empiricallikelihood estimator of the regression coefficients achievesasymptotic efficiency and the estimator of the baseline functionattains asymptotic normality when a bias correction is made. Two calibrated empirical likelihood approaches to inferencefor the baseline function are developed. We propose a groupwiseempirical likelihood procedure to handle the inter-series dependencefor the longitudinal semiparametric regression model, and employbias correction to construct the empirical likelihood ratiofunctions for the parameters of interest. This leads us to provea nonparametric version of Wilks' theorem. Compared with methodsbased on normal approximations, the empirical likelihood doesnot require consistent estimators for the asymptotic varianceand bias. A simulation compares the empirical likelihood andnormal-based methods in terms of coverage accuracies and averageareas/lengths of confidence regions/intervals.  相似文献

A methodology for obtaining maximum likelihood estimates of life table regression coefficients from complex survey data is presented. Certain of the issues of writing a likelihood for survey data are presented and discussed. The proposed methodology includes consideration of the sampling design in any inference by using design based variance estimates for the parameters. An example is given using data from the 1973 United States National Survey of Family Growth.  相似文献

Since the seminal work of Prentice and Pyke, the prospective logistic likelihood has become the standard method of analysis for retrospectively collected case‐control data, in particular for testing the association between a single genetic marker and a disease outcome in genetic case‐control studies. In the study of multiple genetic markers with relatively small effects, especially those with rare variants, various aggregated approaches based on the same prospective likelihood have been developed to integrate subtle association evidence among all the markers considered. Many of the commonly used tests are derived from the prospective likelihood under a common‐random‐effect assumption, which assumes a common random effect for all subjects. We develop the locally most powerful aggregation test based on the retrospective likelihood under an independent‐random‐effect assumption, which allows the genetic effect to vary among subjects. In contrast to the fact that disease prevalence information cannot be used to improve efficiency for the estimation of odds ratio parameters in logistic regression models, we show that it can be utilized to enhance the testing power in genetic association studies. Extensive simulations demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method over the existing ones. A real genome‐wide association study is analyzed for illustration.  相似文献

We consider semiparametric regression for periodic longitudinal data. Parametric fixed effects are used to model the covariate effects and a periodic nonparametric smooth function is used to model the time effect. The within-subject correlation is modeled using subject-specific random effects and a random stochastic process with a periodic variance function. We use maximum penalized likelihood to estimate the regression coefficients and the periodic nonparametric time function, whose estimator is shown to be a periodic cubic smoothing spline. We use restricted maximum likelihood to simultaneously estimate the smoothing parameter and the variance components. We show that all model parameters can be easily obtained by fitting a linear mixed model. A common problem in the analysis of longitudinal data is to compare the time profiles of two groups, e.g., between treatment and placebo. We develop a scaled chi-squared test for the equality of two nonparametric time functions. The proposed model and the test are illustrated by analyzing hormone data collected during two consecutive menstrual cycles and their performance is evaluated through simulations.  相似文献

In nutritional epidemiology, dietary intake assessed with a food frequency questionnaire is prone to measurement error. Ignoring the measurement error in covariates causes estimates to be biased and leads to a loss of power. In this paper, we consider an additive error model according to the characteristics of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)‐InterAct Study data, and derive an approximate maximum likelihood estimation (AMLE) for covariates with measurement error under logistic regression. This method can be regarded as an adjusted version of regression calibration and can provide an approximate consistent estimator. Asymptotic normality of this estimator is established under regularity conditions, and simulation studies are conducted to empirically examine the finite sample performance of the proposed method. We apply AMLE to deal with measurement errors in some interested nutrients of the EPIC‐InterAct Study under a sensitivity analysis framework.  相似文献

An estimate of the risk or prevalence ratio, adjusted for confounders, can be obtained from a log binomial model (binomial errors, log link) fitted to binary outcome data. We propose a modification of the log binomial model to obtain relative risk estimates for nominal outcomes with more than two attributes (the "log multinomial model"). Extensive data simulations were undertaken to compare the performance of the log multinomial model with that of an expanded data multinomial logistic regression method based on the approach proposed by Schouten et al. (1993) for binary data, and with that of separate fits of a Poisson regression model based on the approach proposed by Zou (2004) and Carter, Lipsitz and Tilley (2005) for binary data. Log multinomial regression resulted in "inadmissable" solutions (out-of-bounds probabilities) exceeding 50% in some data settings. Coefficient estimates by the alternative methods produced out-of-bounds probabilities for the log multinomial model in up to 27% of samples to which a log multinomial model had been successfully fitted. The log multinomial coefficient estimates generally had lesser relative bias and mean squared error than the alternative methods. The practical utility of the log multinomial regression model was demonstrated with a real data example. The log multinomial model offers a practical solution to the problem of obtaining adjusted estimates of the risk ratio in the multinomial setting, but must be used with some care and attention to detail.  相似文献

For a prospective randomized clinical trial with two groups, the relative risk can be used as a measure of treatment effect and is directly interpretable as the ratio of success probabilities in the new treatment group versus the placebo group. For a prospective study with many covariates and a binary outcome (success or failure), relative risk regression may be of interest. If we model the log of the success probability as a linear function of covariates, the regression coefficients are log-relative risks. However, using such a log-linear model with a Bernoulli likelihood can lead to convergence problems in the Newton-Raphson algorithm. This is likely to occur when the success probabilities are close to one. A constrained likelihood method proposed by Wacholder (1986, American Journal of Epidemiology 123, 174-184), also has convergence problems. We propose a quasi-likelihood method of moments technique in which we naively assume the Bernoulli outcome is Poisson, with the mean (success probability) following a log-linear model. We use the Poisson maximum likelihood equations to estimate the regression coefficients without constraints. Using method of moment ideas, one can show that the estimates using the Poisson likelihood will be consistent and asymptotically normal. We apply these methods to a double-blinded randomized trial in primary biliary cirrhosis of the liver (Markus et al., 1989, New England Journal of Medicine 320, 1709-1713).  相似文献

The routinely assumed parametric functional form in the linear predictor of a generalized linear mixed model for longitudinal data may be too restrictive to represent true underlying covariate effects. We relax this assumption by representing these covariate effects by smooth but otherwise arbitrary functions of time, with random effects used to model the correlation induced by among-subject and within-subject variation. Due to the usually intractable integration involved in evaluating the quasi-likelihood function, the double penalized quasi-likelihood (DPQL) approach of Lin and Zhang (1999, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B61, 381-400) is used to estimate the varying coefficients and the variance components simultaneously by representing a nonparametric function by a linear combination of fixed effects and random effects. A scaled chi-squared test based on the mixed model representation of the proposed model is developed to test whether an underlying varying coefficient is a polynomial of certain degree. We evaluate the performance of the procedures through simulation studies and illustrate their application with Indonesian children infectious disease data.  相似文献
