One-year-old poplar shoots (nodes, internodes and lenticels) of clones susceptible to infection by the pathogenic fungus Dothichiza populea, viz. Populus nigra Italica and P. Robusta, resistant ones, viz. P. Grandis and P. Hybrida 275, as well as a hybrid of a susceptible and a resistant clone, viz. P. maximowiczii x P. nigra (P. Kórnik 42), were used. The plate method was employed to determine: 1. the abundance of the epiphytic microflora on a mineral medium with glucose; 2. the quantitative composition of epiphytic communities by determining the numbers of typical bacteria (including rod-shaped, spherical and sporulating forms), actinomycetes and yeasts in microscopic preparations from epiphyte colonies; 3. the abundance and level of activity of epiphytes antagonistic towards Dothichiza populea. In all poplar clones the epiphytic microflora was most abundant on nodes and least abundant on lenticels. In the resistant clones epiphytes were 7 (P. Grandis) to as many as 84 times (P. Hybrida 275) less numerous than in the susceptible ones. In the microflora communities of the susceptible poplars, rod-shaped bacteria were the most abundant, and in the resistant ones and the hybrid, yeasts, which made up from 60% to 70% of the strains tested. Spherical and sporulating bacteria as well as actinomycetes were found in numbers not exceeding 4% of the total number of epiphytes. The proportion of antagonistic microflora in whole epiphytic communities was higher in the resistant clones and the hybrid than in the susceptible clones, with the microflora having a more restrictive effect on the development of the pathogen.  相似文献

In turn, in the susceptible P. ‘Robusta’ the introduction of three out of five epiphytes stimulated the growth of the pathogenic fungus producing on average a double increase in the necrotic area. Fungal Epiphytes and Endophytes of Coffee Leaves (Coffea arabica)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Plants harbor diverse communities of fungi and other microorganisms. Fungi are known to occur both on plant surfaces (epiphytes) and inside plant tissues (endophytes), but the two communities have rarely been compared. We compared epiphytic and endophytic fungal communities associated with leaves of coffee (Coffea arabica) in Puerto Rico. We asked whether the dominant fungi are the same in both communities, whether endophyte and epiphyte communities are equally diverse, and whether epiphytes and endophytes exhibit similar patterns of spatial heterogeneity among sites. Leaves of naturalized coffee plants were collected from six sites in Puerto Rico. Epiphytic and endophytic fungi were isolated by placing leaf pieces on potato dextrose agar without and with surface sterilization, respectively. A total of 821 colonies were isolated and grouped into 131 morphospecies. The taxonomic affinities of the four most common nonsporulating fungi were determined by sequencing the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region: two grouped with Xylaria and one each with Botryosphaeria and Guignardia. Of the most common genera, Pestalotia and Botryosphaeria were significantly more common as epiphytes; Colletotrichum, Xylaria, and Guignardia were significantly more common as endophytes. Suprisingly, more morphospecies occurred as endophytes than as epiphytes. Differences among sites in number of fungi per plant were significant. Thus epiphytic and endophytic communities differed greatly on a single leaf, despite living only millimeters apart, and both communities differed from site to site. Significant correlations between occurrence of fungal morphospecies suggested that fungi may have positive or negative effects on their neighbors. This is the first quantitative comparison of epiphytic and endophytic fungal floras in any plant, and the first to examine endophytic fungi or epiphytic fungi in leaves of coffee, one of the world’s most valuable crops.  相似文献

To elucidate the evolution of epiphytes in Liparis section Liparis, we examined the phylogenetic relationships of 16 species by using internal transcribed spacer regions of 18S–26S nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS) and three chloroplast DNA regions (trnS-trnG spacer, trnL with trnL-trnF spacer, and partial matK). Results showed that the epiphytic L. fujisanensis is sister to the terrestrial L. koreana and L. kumokiri, while another epiphyte, L. truncata, is sister to the terrestrial L. krameri. Therefore, the two epiphytic species evolved from terrestrial species independently in section Liparis. Comparative seed morphology revealed that the epiphytes have larger embryos than their closely related terrestrial counterparts. A similar trend toward the increase of embryo size in the two epiphytic species belonging to closely related, but distinct clades suggests that the large embryo may have an advantage in the epiphytic lifestyle. The two epiphytic species share another character state, smaller air spaces in the seed than that of closely related terrestrial species, suggesting possible low dispersibility of the epiphytes. Summary Herbivorous marine amphipods have been implicated as important grazers on filamentous and ephemeral algae, and thus as beneficial to macrophytes in reducing overgrowth by epiphytic competitors. In North Carolina, USA, amphipods comprise 97% of all macroscopic animals inhabiting the abundant brown seaweed Sargassum filipendula, and peak in abundance between late winter and early summer. I used outdoor tank experiments to test the species-specific impact of common phytal amphipods on the growth of Sargassum and its epiphytes. The results show that seaweed-associated amphipods are a trophically diverse group that could either increase or decrease host fitness depending on their feeding preferences. The amphipods Ampithoe marcuzii, Caprella penantis, and Jassa falcata each significantly reduced growth of epiphytes on Sargassum plants relative to amphipod-free controls, while Ericthonius brasiliensis had no significant effect on Sargassum or its epiphytes. However, amphipod grazing was not necessarily beneficial to Sargassum. A. marcuzii consumed Sargassum in one outdoor tank experiment, reducing its mass by 11%, while Sargassum plants without amphipods grew by 81%. Epiphytes (mostly diatoms and the filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus) and detritus remained abundant on these plants suggesting that A. marcuzii preferred the host to its epiphytes. Similarly, when given simultaneous access to Sargassum and to several common foliose and filamentous epiphytes in the lab, A. marcuzii ate Sargassum almost exclusively. The other three amphipods ate no macroalgae. In contrast to A. marcuzii, C. penantis consistently reduced epiphytes with no negative effect on Sargassum. Thus the species composition of the amphipod fauna can determine whether these animals increase or decrease seaweed fitness.  相似文献

Common problems faced in farming of the red algal genus Kappaphycus/Eucheuma are “ice-ice disease” and the occurrence of epiphytes. Considerable work has been documented on “ice-ice disease” and it's mode of infection but limited information is available on the emergence of epiphytes. The present study addresses the phenomenon of epiphyte infection, its prevalence in commercially cultivated red alga, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and their variability associated with seasonality. Cultured seaweed became susceptible to epiphytes in the dry seasons (1) between March – June and (2) September – November. Findings revealed Neosiphonia savatieri (Hariot) M. S. Kim et I. K. Lee, as the dominant infecting epiphyte, representing up to 80–85% of the epiphyte present during peak seasons. Besides N. savatieri, Neosiphonia apiculata, Ceramium sp., Acanthophora sp. and Centroceras sp. were observed in smaller quantities. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) micrographs revealed the epiphyte's attachment to the host. Further histological study showed the extent of penetration of epiphytes into the host's cortex tissues and condition of its surrounding tissues. The outbreak of epiphytic filamentous red algae also correlated with drastic changes in seawater temperature and salinity during March– June and September – November.  相似文献

In semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems, epiphytic plant species are practically absent, and only some species of palm trees can support epiphytes growing in their lower crown area, such as Phoenix dactylifera L. (date palm). In this study, we focused on Sonchus tenerrimus L. plants growing as facultative epiphytes in P. dactylifera and its terrestrial forms growing in adjacent soils. Our aim was to determine the possible presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in these peculiar habitats and to relate AMF communities with climatic variations. We investigated the AMF community composition of epiphytic and terrestrial S. tenerrimus plants along a temperature and precipitation gradient across 12 localities. Epiphytic roots were colonized by AMF, as determined by microscopic observation; all of the epiphytic and terrestrial samples analyzed showed AMF sequences from taxa belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota, which were grouped in 30 AMF operational taxonomic units. The AMF community composition was clearly different between epiphytic and terrestrial root samples, and this could be attributable to dispersal constraints and/or the contrasting environmental and ecophysiological conditions prevailing in each habitat. Across sites, the richness and diversity of terrestrial AMF communities was positively correlated with rainfall amount during the most recent growing season. In contrast, there was no significant correlation between climate variables and AMF richness and diversity for epiphytic AMF communities, which suggests that the composition of AMF communities in epiphytic habitats appears to be largely determined by the availability and dispersion of fungal propagules from adjacent terrestrial habitats.  相似文献

The mycorrhizal status of water-impounding tank bromeliad epiphytes from three locales differing in altitude and moisture regime within Venezuelan cloud forest was examined. Species of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi found in arboreal soils were compared to VAM fungi found in terrestrial soils. Sixteen of the 19 epiphytes examined for the presence of VAM fungi had roots with infection stages; 14 of these specimens showed growth of the fine endophyte Glomus tenue. Fine endophyte was the only VAM fungus found associated with epiphytes in the driest locale studied, while coarse VAM fungi (Gigaspora and Scutellospora spp.) were found at sampling locales receiving more moisture. Root infection was usually composed of intercellular hyphae and peletons; few arbuscules were observed. However, abundant extracellular hyphae were often observed tangled about roots in arboreal soil. It is concluded that epiphytic bromeliads probably benefit, at least periodically, from VAM fungi scavenging for sporadically available nutrients in arboreal soils. Glomus tenue may be particularly important as a colonizing VAM fungus in drier sites of Venezuelan cloud forest. The species composition of VAM fungi in arboreal soils was different to that of terrestrial soils sampled directly under epiphytic bromeliad perches, suggesting that VAM fungi species associated with bromeliads are dispersed to their hosts by vagile animal vectors.  相似文献

Invasion of a Habitat-Forming Seaweed: Effects on Associated Biota   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fucus evanescens is a brown alga of arctic origin that has invaded European coasts. The epiphytic community of F. evanescens in southern Sweden was compared with that of the native Fucus vesiculosus, to examine to what extent an invading seaweed can modify local biodiversity. F. evanescens was much less fouled than F. vesiculosus, supporting both less biomass and fewer species of epiphytes. Multivariate analysis of the most common epiphyte taxa showed that the epiphytic community composition of F. evanescens was not entirely separated from that of F. vesiculosus, but host species contributed significantly to explain the variation in community composition. The biomass of free-living invertebrates was also lower on F. evanescens, although the pattern differed between taxonomic groups. While the biomass of amphipods was lower on F. evanescens, there was no significant difference in biomass of isopods or gastropods between the Fucus species. The good correlation between biomass of epiphytes and free-living animals suggests that the epiphytes play an important role in providing a suitable habitat for many species of free-living epifauna. The study shows that the invasion of F. evanescens affects the environmental conditions for many species associated with the Fucus community but that the direct effect on biodiversity is probably low.  相似文献

Summary Near-isogenic cultivars of Hordeum vulgare which differ for the Mlp gene for resistance to Erysiphe graminis f.sp. hordei were inoculated with race 3 of this pathogen and in vitro translation products of mRNA populations compared by 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis and fluorography. This revealed the presence of new mRNA species in infected leaves compared to non-inoculated controls. These new mRNA species were more abundant in resistant leaves than susceptible leaves. A cDNA library was prepared from poly(A)+RNA isolated from infected leaves carrying the Mlp gene for resistance (cvMlp). The library was screened by differential hybridization using [32P]-labelled cDNA prepared from poly(A)+RNA of both control and infected leaves. Six cDNA clones showing greater hybridization to cDNA prepared from infected leaves were selected. These six cDNA clones hybridized to DNA isolated from barley leaves but not to DNA from conidia of the fungus. In Northern blot analysis of RNA from infected leaves the six cDNA clones each hybridized to mRNA species of different size. Translation products for three of the cDNA clones corresponded to infection-related translation products identified on 2-dimensional fluorograms. The cDNA clones were used to study the kinetics of host mRNA induction during infection of the near-isogenic cultivars of barley. The host mRNA species corresponding to the cDNA clones were induced prior to 24 h after inoculation during the primary penetration processes. In addition the mRNAs corresponding to four of the cDNA clones increased to greater amounts in cvMlp than in the near-isogenic susceptible cultivar (cvmlp) over a 2-d period following inoculation. These results suggest that the Mlp gene has a regulatory role in host gene expression resulting in enhanced expression of several host mRNA species following infection by the powdery mildew fungus.  相似文献

Phenolic compounds from leaves and roots of infected and healthy cocoyam clones resistant (RO1075), tolerant (RO1043), and susceptible (RO1157) to Pythium myriotylum were quantified and tested for their in vitro fungitoxicity on the causal agent of the cocoyam root rot disease. All clones, infected or not, have phenolic compounds showing fungitoxic activity. The phenolic content of the tolerant and susceptible clones is less than that observed in the resistant one meanwhile in the resistant clone RO1075, a large increase in phenolic content is observed particularly in the roots during attack by pathogen.  相似文献

Host traits partly determine the abundance and species richness of epiphytes in tropical forests. It has been proposed that older trees with rough bark and evergreens often house more individuals and more epiphytic species than those with thin, smooth, and peeling bark, which harbor few epiphytes. We hypothesize (i) that epiphytes are more abundant and species-rich in the more shaded forest, which is related to bark roughness, and (ii) that epiphytes are distributed in the middle of the host, where microenvironmental conditions are more favorable to survival. We evaluated abundance, species richness, and vertical distribution of epiphytes in two tropical dry forests, according to the deciduousness and basal area of the trees. Moreover, we selected the most abundant epiphytes to test whether their distribution is related to a specific bark type and examine their vertical distribution in two dry forests. We distinguished a high abundance and species richness of epiphytes in the deciduous forest, although basal area and host species richness were higher in the semi-deciduous forest. In both forests, we found a positive relationship between epiphyte abundance and basal area. Higher abundance of epiphytes was related to the predominance of Tillandsia schiedeana, a drought-adapted species, in both forests. Unexpectedly, epiphytes abundantly colonized Bursera simaruba, a host with peeling bark and a very branched crown, where small individuals of T. schiedeana colonized abundantly toward the top of the crown. Our results show the importance of the tropical dry forest, particularly, B. simaruba, in maintaining epiphyte diversity in terms of T. schiedeana colonization.  相似文献

Inoculation of resistant (R) and susceptible (S) Hevea brasiliensisleaves with Phytophthora palmivorainduced foliar necrosis and biosynthesis of scopoletin (Scp), considered as a Heveaphytoalexin. The degree of resistance of four clones, as classified by the necrotic lesions, was related to the rapidity and intensity of Scp production. The resistant BPM-24, and marked partially resistant clone PB-235, displayed an early secretion of scopoletin that intensified and lasted longer than the weak partially resistant RRIT251, and susceptible clone RRIM600. The lesion size and amount of Scp after infection were positively correlated to the concentration of spores applied to Hevealeaves. In addition, in leaflets inoculated with high spore concentration, Scp reached the highest level earlier than those with low spore concentration. A fungitoxic effect of Scp on mycelium growth was shown in bioassays; the I50 value tested on Phytophthora palmivora was relatively the same as on Phytophthora botryosa, but much lower than those found on other leaf pathogens of rubber tree, Corynespora cassiicolaand Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The lesion size and level of Scp upon spore inoculation may be appropriate for classifying Heveaclones according to their R/S with respect to P. palmivora  相似文献

附生植物是热带亚热带森林生态系统中物种多样性极高且极其脆弱敏感的生物类群之一。光照被认为是促进附生植物由陆生类群演化而来并决定其生长和分布的关键因素。然而,由于接近林冠和规范性采样的限制,附生植物与光照的关系仍亟待阐述。为揭示附生植物对光强变化的响应和适应策略,该研究以亚热带常绿阔叶林6种附生植物(林冠层木本:鼠李叶花楸、毛棉杜鹃;林冠层草本:狭瓣贝母兰、毛唇独蒜兰;树干区草本:点花黄精、距药姜)为对象,对其在4个光处理梯度下生长的叶片气孔特征及其可塑性进行了对比分析。结果表明:(1) 2种附生小乔木的气孔面积(SA)、气孔密度(SD)、潜在气孔导度指数(PCI)和表皮细胞密度(ECD)均对光强改变显著响应。2种附生兰科植物的SA最大,而SD最小;附生乔木叶片SD和ECD的光响应趋势与陆生植物更相似,而附生草本则出现种间差异。(2) 6种附生植物的气孔、表皮细胞特性及其表型可塑性,在草本-木本、常绿-落叶植物、林冠-树干区之间,均无明显差别。(3)附生植物气孔特性和表皮细胞平均可塑性指数均低于陆生植物。综上结果表明,亚热带常绿阔叶林中附生植物对于光环境变化的适应性相对较弱。不同的附生植物可以通过不同程度地增加叶片SD和ECD来适应高光强生境,并通过对SD和SA的双重调节以增大潜在光合能力从而应对低光胁迫。  相似文献

Significant differences were revealed in the taxonomic structure of the epiphytic yeast communities formed on Sphagnum mosses and on the leaves of vascular plants. On mosses, low abundance of red yeasts was found (the most typical epiphytes on vascular plant leaves), along with a relatively high content and diversity of nonpigmented dimorphic basidiomycetes related to the order Leucosporidiales. The species composition of epiphytic yeasts from mosses is different from that of both forest and meadow grasses and of the parts of vascular plants submerged in the turf. The specific composition of the Sphagnum mosses yeast community is probably determined by the biochemical characteristics of this environment, rather than by the hydrothermal regime in the turf.  相似文献

【目的】为了探究南海海藻共附生放线菌资源的多样性及潜在的应用价值,对中国西沙群岛来源的海藻进行共附生放线菌的分离鉴定与抗菌活性筛选。【方法】利用稀释涂布平板法,采用2种不同分离培养基对不同采样位点的6种海藻进行放线菌分离;通过16S rRNA基因序列分析、构建系统发育树对分离的放线菌进行鉴定;用打孔法对无乳链球菌(Streptococcus agalactiae)等10种敏感细菌进行抗菌活性筛选;对筛选得到的目标活性菌株HZ014进行全基因组测序,通过AntiSMASH在线工具分析其次级代谢产物生物合成基因簇,预测其产生新型活性物质的潜力。【结果】从6种海藻中分离得到36株共附生放线菌,基于16S rRNA基因序列比对和系统发育分析,鉴定结果为链霉菌属(Streptomyces) 2株、红球菌属(Rhodococcus) 2株、诺卡氏菌属(Nocardia)3株、小单孢菌属(Micromonospora) 5株和盐孢菌属(Salinispora) 24株;抗菌活性筛选结果表明,36株共附生放线菌发酵粗提物对至少1种敏感细菌表现出一定的抑制作用,不同菌株发酵粗提物的抗菌活性存在明显差异,...  相似文献

Two new species of the sectionMarginatae are described, namely,Inocybe populea sp. nov. andI. leptoclada sp. nov., from western Japan and eastern Japan, respectively.Inocybe leptoclada is assigned to sectionMarginatae, even though it lacks a marginate bulb.Inocybe populea is placed in the sectionMarginatae because of the presence of a marginate (often indistinct) bulbous base of stipe and the caulocystidia throughout. Summary Ninetten aminoacids, twelve sugars, eleven organic acids and ten phenols were detected in the leaf exudates of three cultivars of chilli. The number of aminoacids, sugars, organic acids and phenols increased as the plants grew older. More aminoacids and sugars were detected in the exudate from the susceptible cultivar (Malwa). More organic acids and phenols were detected from the resistant cultivar (Simla). The leaf exudate of the resistant cultivar (Simla) inhibited spore germination of the pathogen (Alternaria solani) while that of susceptible (Malwa) stimulated spore germination. The cultivar ‘Patna’ which is moderately resistant, occupied an intermediate position. Spore germination of the isolated fungi was enhanced in leaf exudate of susceptible cultivar (Malwa), while leaf exudates of the moderately resistant (Patna) and resistant (Simla) inhibited spore germination of the majority of fungi isolated. Most of the antagonistic fungi were not isolated from the susceptible cultivar and the percentage spore germination of these fungi was less in leaf exudate of the susceptible cultivar, while leaf exudates of resistant cultivars enhanced the percentage spore germination of antagonistic fungi,viz Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. versicolor, Penicillium citrinum, P. restrictum andTrichoderma viride.  相似文献

The strangler figs, Ficus pertusa and F. trigonata, are abundant in the seasonally flooded palm savanna (llanos intermedio) near Calabozo, Venezuela. The most common host tree for the hemiepiphytic figs is the palm Copernicia tectorum; nearly half of the palms support either an epiphytic or a ground-rooted fig. During their epiphytic stage the figs are rooted behind the palms' marcescent leaf bases. Material trapped behind the leaf bases is higher in organic matter, nitrogen, magnesium, and potassium than soil from the ground near the palms. The suggestion that nutrient availability to epiphytes is high is supported by the observation that concentrations of several nutrients, including N, P, and K, are significantly higher in epiphytic leaves than in tree leaves. Figs retain access to the epiphytic medium by producing upwardly growing (apogeotropic) roots that remain attached in the host palm's crown long after the fig has become firmly rooted in the ground. Although upward growing roots are expected to be more important in nutrient than water uptake, there are no obvious differences in the xylem anatomy of upward and downward growing fig roots. Terrestrial roots of fig trees are generally infected with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae, but the epiphytic roots of the same individuals are not infected.  相似文献
