Flagellate species have been shown to survive transocean passage by ballast water and the large dinoflagellateGymnodinium catenatum was introduced from Japanese to Tasmanian waters in this way.Gymnodinium mikimotoi—better known asGyrodinium aureolum—andFibrocapsa japonica as well asAlexandrium leeii are good candidates to have been introduced recently. Species which seem to have been introduced recently into the North Sea but apparently are transported from adjacent seas by currents into the region areGymnodinium chlorophorum andAlexandrium minutum. Species reported as introduced due to misidentifications areGymnodinium catenatum andLepidodinium viride. Under other names the speciesProrocentrum minimum, Prorocentrum redfieldii, andHeterosigma akashiwo have been known for a long time in the North Sea. The recent reports of threeChattonella species may be either due to introduction or they have been overlooked. The reasons why the introduction of flagellates into coastal North Sea waters is difficult to prove will be discussed.  相似文献

Not all introduced (invasive) species in a region will spread from a single point of introduction. Long-distance dispersal or further introductions can obscure the pattern of spread, but the regional importance of such processes is difficult to gauge. These difficulties are further compounded when information on the multiple scale process of invasive species range expansion is reduced to one-dimensional estimates of spread (e.g. km yr−1). We therefore compared the results of two different metrics of range expansion: maximum linear rate of spread and accumulation of occupied grid squares (50 × 50 km) over time. An analysis of records for 54 species of introduced marine macrophytes in the Mediterranean and northeast Atlantic revealed cases where the invasion process was probably missed (e.g. Atlantic Bonnemaisonia hamifera) and suggested cases of secondary introductions or erratic jump dispersal (Dasysiphonia sp. and Womersleyella setacea). A majority of species analysed showed evidence for an accumulation of invaded sites without a clear invasion front. Estimates of spread rate are increasing for more recent introductions. The increase is greater than can be accounted for by temporally varying search effort and implies a historical increase in vector efficiency and/or a decreased resistance of native communities to invasion.  相似文献

The consequences of plant introductions into ecosystems are frequently reported from terrestrial environments, but little is known about the effects on ecosystem functioning caused by non-native primary producers in marine systems. In this study we explored the effects of the invasion by the two filamentous red algae Heterosiphonia japonica and Bonnemaisonia hamifera on the primary production of seaweed communities by using single and mixed cultures of non-native and native red algae. The experiments were conducted both in the presence and absence of herbivores. Biomass production of the invaded community increased more than four times in mixed cultures with H. japonica, while introduction by B. hamifera had no significant effect. The different impact on community production could be explained by differences in life history strategies between the invaders; H. japonica grew considerably faster than the native seaweeds which directly increased the community production, while B. hamifera showed a relatively slow growth rate and therefore had no effect. From previous studies it is known that B. hamifera produces a highly deterrent, but also costly, chemical defence. The assessment of survival and growth of a native generalist herbivore further corroborated that the biomass produced by B. hamifera constitutes a very low-quality food, whereas the performance of herbivores on a diet of H. japonica was comparable to that on native algal diets. In summary, this study demonstrates that successful invaders belonging to the same functional group (filamentous red algae) may have distinctly different impacts on productivity in the recipient community, depending on their specific life history traits.  相似文献

The carotenoid composition of the following 8 species of red algae has been studied quantitatively and qualitatively: Bangia fuscopurpurea, Nemalion helminthoides, Bonnemaisonia hamifera (tetrasporophyte), Gigartina stellata, Rhodymenia palmata, Ceramium rubrum, Polysiphonia brodiaei, and Polysiphonia urceolata. Naturally occurring material of G. stellata, R. palmata, and P. brodiaei was investigated, while monoalgally cultured material was obtained from the remaining 5 species. α- and β-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and small amounts of α- or β-cryptoxanthin were commonly present, but the two species P. brodiaei and P. urceolata were devoid of carotenoids containing α-ionone rings. Fucoxanthin was detected in naturally occurring material of B. fuscopurpurea, N. helminthoides, C. rubrum, and P. brodiaei, but could not be found in cultured material of the 3 first-mentioned species. The possible origin of the fucoxanthin is discussed as well as the biochemical and phylogenetic implications of the results obtained. As judged from the electronic spectrum of the total extracts, chlorophyll d was not present in any of the algae investigated. The total amounts of carotenoids and the ratio carotenoids: chlorophyll a were similar to those reported in previous work.  相似文献

Understanding how invasive species spread is of particular concern in the current era of globalisation and rapid environmental change. The occurrence of super‐diffusive movements within the context of Lévy flights has been discussed with respect to particle physics, human movements, microzooplankton, disease spread in global epidemiology and animal foraging behaviour. Super‐diffusive movements provide a theoretical explanation for the rapid spread of organisms and disease, but their applicability to empirical data on the historic spread of organisms has rarely been tested. This study focuses on the role of long‐distance dispersal in the invasion dynamics of aquatic invasive species across three contrasting areas and spatial scales: open ocean (north‐east Atlantic), enclosed sea (Mediterranean) and an island environment (Ireland). Study species included five freshwater plant species, Azolla filiculoides, Elodea canadensis, Lagarosiphon major, Elodea nuttallii and Lemna minuta; and ten species of marine algae, Asparagopsis armata, Antithamnionella elegans, Antithamnionella ternifolia, Codium fragile, Colpomenia peregrina, Caulerpa taxifolia, Dasysiphonia sp., Sargassum muticum, Undaria pinnatifida and Womersleyella setacea. A simulation model is constructed to show the validity of using historical data to reconstruct dispersal kernels. Lévy movement patterns similar to those previously observed in humans and wild animals are evident in the re‐constructed dispersal pattern of invasive aquatic species. Such patterns may be widespread among invasive species and could be exacerbated by further development of trade networks, human travel and environmental change. These findings have implications for our ability to predict and manage future invasions, and improve our understanding of the potential for spread of organisms including infectious diseases, plant pests and genetically modified organisms.  相似文献

Detailed fatty acid analyses are reported for ten benthic algae from Australian waters of which the data for Cladophora fascicularis (Chlorophyta); Polysiphonia pungens, Porphyra sp., Centroceras clavatum (Rhodophyta); Hormosira banksii, Ralfsia sp., and Dictyota dichomota (Phaeophyta) are presented for the first time. The analyses report the exact molecular structure of component acids which is essential for taxonomic and food chain studies. The acid 16:4ω3 could be taxonomically distinguishing for species of the Chlorophyta. The occurrence of cis-vaccenic acid (18:1ω7) in the algae reported here suggests a distribution in marine benthic algae which is wider than hitherto realised, with particular taxonomic importance for Chlorophyta species in which it occurs in high levels. Corallina officinalis was found to contain the non-methylene interrupted acids 20:2 and 22:2.  相似文献

The structure of microbial communities of brown algae, red algae, and of the red alga Gracilaria verrucosa, healthy and affected with thallus rot, were comparatively investigated; 61 strains of heterotrophic bacteria were isolated and characterized. Most of them were identified to the genus level, some Vibrio spp., to the species level according to their phenotypic properties and the fatty acid composition of cellular lipids. The composition of the microflora of two species of brown algae was different. In Chordaria flagelliphormis, Pseudomonas spp. prevailed, and in Desmarestia viridis, Bacillus spp. The composition of the microflora of two red algae, G. verrucosa and Camphylaephora hyphaeoides, differed mainly in the ratio of prevailing groups of bacteria. The most abundant were bacteria of the CFB cluster and pseudoalteromonads. In addition, the following bacteria were found on the surface of the algae: Sulfitobacter spp., Halomonas spp., Acinetobacter sp., Planococcus sp., Arthrobacter sp., and Agromyces sp. From tissues of the affected G. verrucosa, only vibrios were isolated, both agarolytic and nonagarolytic. The existence of specific bacterial communities characteristic of different species of algae is suggested and the relation of Vibrio sp. to the pathological process in the tissues of G. verrucosa is supposed.  相似文献

Knowledge on the distribution, abundance and species richness of intertidal macroalgae occurring on sandy and muddy flats of the German Wadden Sea is still incomplete. We summarize published and unpublished information available on the presence of macroalgae on the tidal flats of Königshafen Bay (island of Sylt, North Sea), one of the more extensively studied areas of the Wadden Sea. A total of 46 green algal species, 36 brown algal species and 26 red algal species has been recorded within the last 120 years on soft and hard substrata of Königshafen Bay (disregarding species found unattached or drifting). Several of these species were only temporarily resident on the tidal flats. Today, at least 35 green, 15 brown and 12 red algal species occur within or close to Königshafen Bay. Significant long-term changes in species abundances have occurred in all three major groups of algae: Since the late 1970s, dense green algal mats dominated byEnteromorpha flexuosa, E. radiata andE. prolifera have occurred regularly on the intertidal flats, whereas a general decrease of brown and red algae has been documented. Two red algal species,Gracilaria verrucosa and its epiphyteCallithamnion corymbosum, were conspicuous members of the macroflora until the middle of this century. Although still present in the 1980s, they have now disappeared completely. On the other hand, the brown algaSargassum muticum has begun to colonize mussel beds. The causal background of long-term changes in the macroalgal flora of Königshafen Bay is discussed. Owing to substantial nomenclatural changes during the last 120 years, a revised species list with authors’ names and synonyms is included.  相似文献

Caulerpa racemosa (Forsskål) J. Agardh has been recorded along the Mediterranean Sea since the 1920s, and since then has continually invaded its coasts moving westward towards the Atlantic. In recent years, authors have revealed the negative effect of the species on the Mediterranean’s benthic communities. Taking into account that the latest reference placed the species in Murcia (Southeastern Spain) in 2005, we now give evidence here of the presence of this invasive algae in Ceuta, a Spanish city located in the Strait of Gibraltar on the North Africa Coast. This is the first and westernmost recorded presence of the species in the area. Characteristics of the located patches are given.  相似文献

Complementary to a previous publication (Kornmann & Sahling, 1977), this investigation deals mainly with microscopic algae occurring in the rocky littoral of Helgoland island (North Sea). Based on the results obtained from cultivation experiments, the heterogeneousUlvella-complex of Dangeard has been rearranged and partly included in a new genusStromatella, andPlanophila respectively. The life history ofChlorocystis cohnii proved to be heteromorphic, the zygotes developing into a Codiolum-sporophyte. Also inHalochlorococcum marinum, some of the biflagellate swarmers give rise to Codiolum-like cells.Chlorocystis andHalochlorococcum, up to now members of the Chlorococcales, are incorporated into the new Codiolophycean order, Chlorocystidales. Three newHalochlorococcum species are described, the epiphytic“Chlorochytrium” moorei also being combined with this genus. Supplementary observations on some crustose red algae from transparent substrates are included in this study, as well as findings of some species not previously reported for the Helgoland area.  相似文献

The recent introduction of the macroalgaUndaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar into the North Atlantic is the latest of a large number of introductions, which have occurred over many years. Some have been deliberate introductions for mariculture or research, while most have been accidental, via vectors such as shipping and shellfish imports. Not all newly recorded species are introductions; some are thought to be merely extensions of distribution, e.g.Laminaria ochroleuca, while others may have been overlooked previously, e.g.Scytosiphon dotyi. Subsequent to its accidental introduction into the waters around the Mediterranean French coast at Sete, most likely with imported oysters,Undaria was deliberately introduced into the North Atlantic, to Brittany, in 1983 by IFREMER for commercial exploitation.Undaria has since spread from the original sites in Brittany, and is now established at several sites on the south coast of England. This paper discusses the introduced brown algae in the North Atlantic and outlines the establishment ofUndaria in the UK.  相似文献

The red alga Polysiphonia morrowii, native to the North Pacific (Northeast Asia), has recently been reported worldwide. To determine the origin of the French and Argentine populations of this introduced species, we compared samples from these two areas with samples collected in Korea and at Hakodate, Japan, the type locality of the species. Combined analyses of chloroplastic (rbcL) and mitochondrial (cox1) DNA revealed that the French and Argentine populations are closely related and differ substantially from the Korean and Japanese populations. The genetic structure of P. morrowii populations from South Atlantic and North Atlantic, which showed high haplotype diversity compared with populations from the North Pacific, suggested the occurrence of multiple introduction events from areas outside of the so‐called native regions. Although similar, the French and Argentine populations are not genetically identical. Thus, the genetic structure of these two introduced areas may have been modified by cryptic and recurrent introduction events directly from Asia or from other introduced areas that act as introduction relays. In addition, the large number of private cytoplasmic types identified in the two introduced regions strongly suggests that local populations of P. morrowii existed before the recent detection of these invasions. Our results suggest that the most likely scenario is that the source population(s) of the French and Argentine populations was not located only in the North Pacific and/or that P. morrowii is a cryptogenic species.  相似文献

Mya arenaria currently occupies a wide geographical range in the northern hemisphere, on both coasts of the Atlantic as well as on the Pacific east coast. Some authors claim it also occurs on the Pacific west coast. The species originated in the Pacific during the Miocene and was already present on both Atlantic coasts in the Pliocene. However, it died out on the east coasts of the Pacific and the Atlantic during glaciation of the Pleistocene. With the aid of man it was reintroduced to the North Sea some 400–700 years ago and to the East Pacific last century. In the 1960s it was also introduced to the Black Sea.M. arenaria invaded new habitats by different modes: (1) natural range expansion (2) intentional as plantings, (3) unintentional as a ballast species and (4) unintentional as a byproduct of oyster transplants. Properties that may favor its wide range of distribution and invading success are: high fecundity; planktonic dispersal stages and life stages that lend itself to unintentional transport by humans; a broad spectrum of habitat and food preference; tolerance of a wide range of environmental conditions such as salinity and temperature; longevity, and perhaps relatively large size.  相似文献

Temperature tolerance (1 week exposure time) was determined at intervals during two successive years in 54 dominant marine benthic algae growing near Helgoland (North Sea). Seawater temperatures near Helgoland seasonally range between 3°C (in some years 0°) and 18°C. All algae survived 0°C, and none 33°C. Among the brown algae,Chorda tomentosa was the most sensitive species surviving only 18°C, followed by theLaminaria spp. surviving 20°, however not 23°C.Fucus spp. andCladostephus spongiosus were the most heat-tolerant brown algae, surviving 28°C. Among the red algae, species of the Delesseriaceae(Phycodrys rubens, Membranoptera alata) ranged on the lower end with a maximum survival temperature of 20°C, whereas the representatives of the Phyllophoraceae(Ahnfelitia plicata, Phyllophora truncata, P. pseudoceranoides) exhibited the maximum heat tolerance of the Helgoland marine algal flora with survival at 30°C. The latter value was also achieved byCodium fragile, Bryopsis hypnoides andEnteromorpha prolifera among the green algae, whereas theAcrosiphonia spp. survived only 20°C, andMonostroma undulatum only 10°C, not 15°C. Seasonal shifts of heat tolerance of up to 5°C were detected, especially inLaminaria spp. andDesmarestia aculeata. The majority of the dominant marine algal species of the Helgoland flora occurs in the Arctic, and it is hypothesized that also there the upper lethal limits of these species may hardly have changed even today. In a section of the Liassic southwest of the village of Préjano (Prov. Logroño) Sinemurian Dasyclad algae were found for the first time in the “Bankkalk-Series” of the “Carniolas-Formation” which is not dated up to that time. Ventry Bay in County Kerry, southwest Ireland, was surveyed in June 1977 to a depth of 17 m using SCUBA and a grid of stations which were 400 m apart. The principal substrate was sand. Zostera marina L. was dominant and widespread from 0.5 to 13 m below Chart Datum and is the deepest-growing Zostera in Northwest Europe. Sixty species of algae were found and their occurrence and that of Zostera marina was subjected to cluster analysis resulting in one distinct cluster of Zostera marina, Ulva lactuca L., Gracilaria verrucosa (Huds.) Papenf., Polysiphonia elongata (Huds.) Spreng., Ectocarpus sp., Ceramium rubrum (Huds.) C. Ag. and Brongniartella byssoides (Good. et Woodw.) Schmitz. These algae are so common and widespread in the subtidal zone that their co-occurrence with Zostera is not considered to be significant. Zostera occurs virtually as monospecific stands in sand and the co-occurrence of any macroalgae is largely fortuitous and dependent on the heterogeneity of the substrate.  相似文献

In order to find new sources of arachidonic (AA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acids, the composition of fatty acids was studied and lipid concentrations were determined in the thalluses of 32 species of red algae from Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan. The greatest level of EPA and a small concentration of AA were registered in the thalluses of Corallina pilulifera, Palmaria stenogona, Halosaccion yendoi, and Laurencia nipponica. Taking into consideration the level of the lipid concentrations in the algae, as well as their biomass and frequency of occurrence, the algae C. pilulifera, P. stenogona, L. nipponica, and Polysiphonia morrowii may be of interest as potential sources of EPA. Among the examined algae, only Gracilaria verrucosa showed a high level of AA.  相似文献
