The production of cellulolytic enzymes by Aspergillus niger on lignocellulosic substrates groundnut fodder, wheat bran, rice bran and sawdust in solid state fermentation in a laboratory scale was compared. Czapek Dox liquid broth amended with cellulose (0.5%) was used to moisten lignocellulosic solid supports for cultivation of Aspergillus niger. The production of filter paperase, carboxymethyl cellulase and -glucosidase were monitored at daily intervals for 5 days. The peak production of the enzymes occurred within 3 days of incubation. Among solid supports used in the study, wheat bran was the best solid matrix followed by groundnut fodder in production of cellulolytic enzymes in solid state fermentation. Groundnut fodder supported significant production of FPase (2.09 FPU/g), CMCase (1.36 U/g) and -glucosidase activity (0.0117 U/g) in solid state fermentation. Considerable secretion of protein (5.10 mg/g) on groundnut fodder at peak time interval 1st day of incubation was recorded.  相似文献

More than 50% of Nepal’s population lives in the hill regions, usually with small land holdings, and over 60% are considered below the poverty line. Livestock, and particularly goats, provide these small-scale farmers with about 55% of their on-farm income. We studied goat production in Katteldanda, a mid-hill village of 78 households, mainly Brahmins, in Ghorka District. Subsistence farmers raise six or seven goats and one or two buffalo, and cultivate mainly maize, millet and rice. Tree fodder constituted about 70% of dry matter intake of goats for large parts of the year and was collected by lopping branches from trees on upland, rain-watered, private terraces (bari) near the household compound. Local farmers ranked the fodder trees they considered best and we measured the actual fodder they offered to goats. In addition, we evaluated and ranked 23 fodder species on the basis of laboratory in vitro nutritional and metabolizable energy yields. Using a Mantel test, a significant correlation was found between what the farmers thought was best fodder and fodder offered to goats (Mantel r = 0.398; P = 0.037) but non-significant correlations were found between either what the farmers thought was best fodder or fodder offered to goats and laboratory rankings (Mantel r = −0.027; P = 0.49 and Mantel r = 0.187; P = 0.18, respectively). We concluded that biomass produced and availability throughout the year, in addition to nutritional and energy yield, are important criteria for selecting fodder trees for goat production.  相似文献

This study aimed to identify the economic dimension of directing treated wastewater to the production of green fodder. To achieve its objectives, the study relied on economic equations, the method of using multiple criteria, and a scoring technique for prioritization. The study showed that green fodder is a crop that depletes water, as it consumes about 67.27% of the water used for agricultural purposes. In determining the priority of regions intending to use treated wastewater, the ranking put Riyadh region first, followed by the eastern region, the Qassim region, Hail, Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Tabuk, Asir, Al-Jawf, Jizan, Madinah, Najran, the northern borders, and Al-Baha, in this order. The area that can be cultivated with forage crops is estimated to be about 53.05 thousand hectares, with a production of 953.75 thousand tons. The cost of treating wastewater to make it usable amounts to 2126.22 million riyals, while the value of the benefits gained from its use is 2508.95 million riyals; thus, the Saudi agricultural economy achieves a net gain estimated at about 382.73 million riyals annually. Therefore, this study recommends the use of treated wastewater in the production of green fodder.  相似文献

A grazing experiment was conducted in the summer/autumn of 2003 to determine the effect of grazing on willow fodder blocks at 6000 stems/ha during mating, relative to control ewes grazed on drought pasture, upon ewe production and reproduction. The fodder blocks contained a mixture of herbage and small trees. Grazing occurred over 10 weeks, from 19 February including three cycles of mating, with four groups of 100 ewes, comprising short drought pasture typical of drought pasture, long drought pasture typical of the pasture growing in the willow fodder blocks, short drought pasture with restricted access to willow fodder blocks (restricted access) and full access to willow fodder blocks (fenced on the willow fodder blocks all the time; full access). After mating, the four groups were joined and managed as one group until weaning in late November 2003. Ewe live weight (LW) and body condition score (BCS) change and reproductive rate at foetal ultra-sound scanning, lambing, docking and weaning were measured. Ewe wool production and staple length were measured at weaning. Short drought pasture had a pre-grazing mass of 1639 kg dry matter (DM)/ha with a dead matter content of 60%; typical of drought conditions. Herbage in the willow fodder blocks was similar to both control drought pastures (short and long) in nutritive value, with an organic matter digestibility (OMD) of 0.50. Tree yields were low in the fodder blocks, but they had higher concentrations of all secondary compounds, including 30 g condensed tannin (CT)/kg DM and OMD was higher, at 0.72. CT concentration was higher in the fodder block herbage than in short and long control drought pasture (5.0 g/kg versus 2.5 g/kg DM). Substantial LW loss occurred in the short control group (101 g/day), and reproductive rate was low, as would occur in severe drought conditions. Full access to fodder blocks lowered LW loss to 40 g/day and increased reproductive rate by approximately 20% units, with more ewes giving birth to twin lambs. Restricted access ewes had a low reproductive rate, similar to the short control group. Reproductive rate in full access treatment was slightly higher than in the long control group, despite similar calculated DM intakes in both groups. Calculated crude protein and CT intakes were higher for full access ewes than for any other groups, due to contributions from both the herbage and the trees; this may have increased the flow of undegradable dietary protein (UDP) to the small intestine and so have contributed to the increased fecundity of this group. Full access to willow fodder blocks proved beneficial in increasing ewe reproductive rate. However, both pasture and trees need to be managed as a tree/pasture system in order to produce herbage of higher nutritive value and more efficiently utilise willow fodder blocks as a supplementary feed.  相似文献

The practical utilization of heterosis in crop plants has been greatly facilitated during the past 15 years by the use of cytoplasmic male|sterility for low-cost, large-scale emasculation of the seed parents of hybrids. The method is now being used in commercial production of hybrid onions, sugar beets, field corn, grain sorghum, and petunias. The majority of New Zealand dairy goat farmers utilise cultivated green-fed fodder dominated by perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), but evidence from other ruminant species suggests that milk production may be improved when using a more diverse array of species within the green fodder. The aim of this experiment was to determine whether feeding lactating dairy goats a mixed-species green fodder (MF, consisting of perennial ryegrass, timothy (Phleum pratense L.), prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth), white clover, red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) improves dietary intake, milk yield and composition compared with a standard ryegrass and white clover green fodder (SF). Thirty-six mid-lactation goats were housed indoors in pairs and split into two groups (A and B). The trial was split into three periods – firstly a uniformity period of 6 days, in which all goats were fed a combination of both green fodder types, followed by two treatment periods (P1 and P2) of 12 days, respectively. For P1, group A was fed MF and group B was fed SF, and then the group diets were switched for P2. Goats fed MF had 13% greater dry matter intake and 7% greater milk yield than goats fed SF. In addition, the milk protein and fat concentration of goats fed MF were 4% greater than for those fed SF, whereas there was no effect on milk lactose concentration. There was no treatment effect on the levels of protein, glucose, urea or non-esterified fatty acids in the blood of the goats. An effect of green fodder type on milk fat profile was demonstrated, with proportions of pentadecylic acid (C15:0), cis-vaccenic acid (C18:1 c11), linoleic acid (C18:2 n6) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3 n3) being increased in response to MF consumption. In contrast, iso-C15 and iso-C17 proportions were lesser. In summary, this study demonstrated that goats fed MF increased green fodder intake and milk production compared with goats fed SF. The green fodder type affected the fatty acid profile of goat’s milk, with MF increasing the levels of beneficial polyunsaturated omega fatty acids (linoleic and α-linolenic acids).  相似文献

Corn silage juice was found to be a favorable substrate for production of fodder yeasts. Kluyveromyces marxianus NRRL Y-610 yielded significantly more cell dry weight than other cultures examined. In shake-flask experiments, the yeast produced over 13 g of cell dry weight per liter of corn silage juice and completely consumed the organic pollutants (lactic acid, acetic acid, and ethanol). The yeast settled rapidly and had a yeast volume index of 21 ml/g. The results indicate that K. marxianus NRRL Y-610 could be used to efficiently remove lactic acid and other organic compounds from corn silage juice with the concomitant production of fodder yeast.  相似文献

This study examined the feasibility of producing hydrogen by direct fermentation of fodder maize, chicory fructooligosaccharides and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in batch culture (pH 5.2-5.3, 35 degrees C, heat-treated anaerobically digested sludge inoculum). Gas was produced from each substrate and contained up to 50-80% hydrogen during the peak periods of gas production with the remainder carbon dioxide. Hydrogen yields obtained were 62.4+/-6.1mL/g dry matter added for fodder maize, 218+/-28mL/g chicory fructooligosaccharides added, 75.6+/-8.8mL H(2)/g dry matter added for wilted perennial ryegrass and 21.8+/-8mL H(2)/g dry matter added for fresh perennial ryegrass. Butyrate, acetate and ethanol were the main soluble fermentation products. Hydrogen yields of 392-501m(3)/hectare of perennial ryegrass per year and 1060-1309m(3)/hectare of fodder maize per year can be obtained based on the UK annual yield per hectare of these crops. These results significantly extend the range of substrates that can be used for hydrogen production without pre-treatment.  相似文献

An enzyme immunoassay (EIA) system for the detection of fodder yeast antigens in the air of production areas at fodder protein producing plants has been developed. The method has proved to be highly sensitive and specific and shows advantages in comparison with the nonspecific method of low sensitivity, currently used at such plants. The sensitivity of solid-phase EIA techniques is 0.001 micrograms/ml (for protein) or 10(2)-10(3) cells/ml, and 10 ng/ml for soluble antigen. Intensive livestock grazing can largely deplete the natural fodder resources in semi-arid, subtropical highlands and together with the low nutritional quality of the pasture vegetation limit the growth and production of grazing animals. To evaluate the contribution of homestead feeding of grazing goats to rangeland conservation and animal nutrition, two researcher-managed on-farm trials were conducted in a mountain oasis of Northern Oman. Goats' feed intake on pasture in response to four rations containing different levels of locally available green fodder and concentrate feeds was determined in six male goats each (35 ± 10.2 kg body weight (BW)). Total feed intake was estimated using titanium dioxide as external fecal marker as well as the diet organic matter (OM) digestibility derived from fecal crude protein concentration. The nutritional quality of selected fodder plants on pasture was analyzed to determine the animals' nutrient and energy intake during grazing. The pasture vegetation accounted for 0.46 to 0.65 of the goats' total OM intake (87 to 107 g/kg0.75 BW), underlining the importance of this fodder resource for the husbandry system. However, metabolizable energy (7.2 MJ/kg OM) and phosphorus concentrations (1.4 g/kg OM) in the consumed pasture plants were low. Homestead feeding of nutrient and energy-rich by-products of the national fishery and date palm cultivation to grazing goats increased their daily OM intake (R2 = 0.36; P = 0.005) and covered their requirements for growth and production. While the OM intake on pasture was highest in animals fed a concentrate-based diet (P = 0.003), the daily intake of 21 g OM/kg0.75 BW of cultivated green fodder reduced the animals' feed intake on pasture (R2 = 0.44; P = 0.001). Adjusting homestead supplementation with locally available feedstuffs to the requirements of individual goats and to the nutritional quality of the pasture vegetation improves animal performance and eases the grazing pressure exerted on the natural vegetation. This management strategy therefore appears to be a valuable alternative to intensive livestock feeding in zero-grazing systems and may contribute to sustainable livestock production in ecologically fragile, semi-arid mountain regions.  相似文献

High concentrations of tannins in fodder plants inhibit gastrointestinal bacteria and reduce ruminant performance. Increasing the proportion of tannin-resistant bacteria in the rumen protects ruminants from antinutritional effects. The reason for the protective effect is unclear, but could be elucidated if the mechanism(s) by which tannins inhibit bacteria and the mechanisms of tannin resistance were understood. A review of the literature indicates that the ability of tannins to complex with polymers and minerals is the basis of the inhibitory effect on gastrointestinal bacteria. Mechanisms by which bacteria can overcome inhibition include tannin modification/degradation, dissociation of tannin–substrate complexes, tannin inactivation by high-affinity binders, and membrane modification/repair and metal ion sequestration. Understanding the mechanism of action of tannins and the mechanism(s) bacteria use to overcome the inhibitory effects will allow better management of the rumen ecosystem to reduce the antinutritional effects of tannin-rich fodder plants and thereby improve ruminant production.  相似文献

Summary Operating conditions for our semi-continuous, solid-phase fermentation system were optimized for conversion of fodder beets to fuel ethanol and distiller's wet feed (DWF). This information was then used to estimate operating parameters achievable in a commercial plant, and likely baseline production costs of such a plant. Initial acidification of pulp to pH 2.9–3.2 was effective in controlling bacterial contamination. The maximum operating capacity of the fermentor was approximately 92%, with 75% used for commercial application. A fermentation time of 24 h was sufficient to completely ferment the beet pulp to 8–9% (v/v) ethanol. Based on these parameters, a fodder beet cost of $19.25/metric ton ($17.50/ton), other operating and capital costs, and a PF credit of $0.14/L ($0.53/gal), ethanol production costs were estimated to be $0.49/L ($1.87/gal).  相似文献

Historically, sugar beets were selected from fodder beets. We used mitochondrial minisatellite loci to analyze cytoplasmic genetic diversity in fodder beet and sugar beet. Among the 8 sugar beet accessions examined we identified 3 multi-locus haplotypes. These 3 haplotypes were a subset of 5 haplotypes identified among the 29 fodder beet accessions examined. All but one haplotype in fodder beet comprised, in turn, a subset of 12 haplotypes identified previously in leaf beets. Such apparent decreases in cytoplasmic genetic diversity must result from genetic bottlenecks associated with domestication and the ensuing breeding processes. We also detected the haplotype associated with the male-sterile Owen cytoplasm of sugar beet in the fodder beet gene pool. Furthermore, the presence of a 39 kDa protein associated with the Owen cytoplasm was confirmed in two fodder beet plants by Western blot analysis. These results lead us to speculate that the Owen cytoplasm may have originated in fodder beet, from which sugar beet was derived.  相似文献

Various yeasts such as two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces diastaticus, and Kluyveromyces marxianus were investigated for their ability to ferment fodder beet juice to alcohol. Juice extracted from fodder beet roots without any additives was used as a fermentation substrate. The fermentation kinetic parameters were determined and compared for each species of yeast tested. The best species for fodder beet juice fermentation was chosen and products obtained by fermentation of one hectare of fodder beet plants are given.  相似文献

This paper deals with remediation of the Campine soil, an agricultural area diffusely contaminated with metals where most farmers raise dairy cattle and grow fodder maize. In a previous study, we calculated the effect of switching from fodder to energy maize on the farmer's income. Selling this energy maize as feedstock for anaerobic digestion to produce renewable energy could lead to a significant increase in his income. This paper explores the economic opportunities for the farmer of digesting the harvested contaminated biomass himself, by performing a Net Present Value (NPV) analysis on the digestion activity and by calculating the probability of a positive NPV of income resulting from the digestion installation. We investigate the trade off between the maximum price for energy maize that can be paid by the digestion activity and the minimum price that the farming activity needs to compensate for covering its production costs. Integrating the previous study in the current analysis results in an increase of total extra income for the farmer (i.e., from both growing energy maize and performing digestion).  相似文献

Maize is an important fodder resource for ruminants. The yield and quality of fodder is governed by genetic variability and interaction of genotypes with environment. Therefore, it is prerequisite to evaluate the available variability for fodder traits in maize. For this, 75 genotypes were evaluated in three replications for 2 years. Data were recorded on eight morphological traits including green fodder yield and dried fodder samples were evaluated for eight fodder quality traits. Wide range of estimates for fodder quality and productivity characters except DFF and LSR reflects the existence of significant variations among genotypes. ANOVA revealed significant variety × year interaction for seven traits. Plant height, stem girth, leaf-length and -width demonstrated positive correlation with green fodder yield per plant. Inverse association was observed between crude protein and cell wall component (NDF, hemicellulose). First three principle components explained 44.28% of the total variation. Two-way clustering grouped the genotypes and traits into five and three major clusters, respectively. During SSR analysis, a total of 133 alleles from 21 primers were generated with mean PIC value was 0.58. The genetic distance between genotypes was ranging between 0.16 and 0.75 with an average of 0.49. All genotypes were clustered in three main groups and clustering was consistent with genotype origin. A weak correlation was identified between morphological and molecular distance. Eventually results suggested that both morphotypes and molecular markers should exploit simultaneously to reveal the true genetic diversity to get maximum heterosis through hybridization.  相似文献
