Juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were raised under simulated natural photoperiod (SNP) and constant light (CL). SNP fish displayed typical characteristics of smolts in the spring including changes in colouration, elevated gill Na+/K+ ATPase activity and ability to pass a seawater challenge. CL fish grew at rates comparable to SNP fish, but did not demonstrate any of these molt characteristics.
Electrophoretic analyses of plasma proteins from both groups of fish revealed that SNP fish displayed reproducible qualitative changes in protein patterns from February to May with May patterns being the most complex. CL fish displayed patterns similar to SNP fish. The timing of the appearance of patterns was influenced by photoperiod as indicated by the fact that CL fish had a progression of pattern changes retarded by at least one month relative to SNP fish. The changes in plasma protein patterns in smolting Atlantic salmon were not dependent on changed growth rates.  相似文献

After conditioning Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus for 2 weeks, the photoperiod regime of 12 tanks of fish was changed to a 6L : 6D photoperiod while 12 further tanks were retained on the conditioning photoperiod regime (12L : 12D). Blood samples were collected 3 days (first sampling) and 3 months (second sampling) after changing the photoperiod regime. Blood was collected at 6 h intervals from both photoperiod regimes (1000, 1600, 2200 and 0400 hours). At the first sampling time, fish in the 6L : 6D had significantly higher cortisol both in the light and dark phases than levels in fish in the 12L : 12D photoperiod. At the second sampling time, the levels were significantly higher only in the light phase. The levels of cortisol, glucose and Cl in fish exposed to the 6L : 6D photoperiod, however, were far lower than those of acute stress‐induced levels observed in fish exposed to a stress experiment. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in overall values of all the variables between the photoperiod regimes at the second sampling time. This indicated that the fish exposed to the 6L : 6D photoperiod were not chronically stressed. Significantly higher blood lymphocyte counts were observed in fish exposed to the 6L : 6D compared to those of the 12L : 12D photoperiod during the light phase at the second sampling time. Other variables (glucose, Cl, haematocrit and neutrophil) did not show a significant difference between the treatments at either sampling time. These results demonstrated that the artificial photoperiod regime did not cause a significant acute or chronic stress response in Nile tilapia.  相似文献

A factorial culture experiment was designed to investigate the influence of light regimes and of some metal chelators on the accumulation of cadmium by Lemna gibba L. The plants were grown in a complete nutrient solution containing Cd2+ concentrations ranging from 0 to 27 μ M with or without EDTA, ethylenediamine-N,N'- bis -( o -hydroxyphenylacetic acid) (EDDHA) or salicylic acid. Each experiment was run for eight days in 18 h:6 h light:dark or continuous light. An increase in the Cd2+ concentration in plants and a simultaneous drop in accumulation efficiency (ratio of Cd2+ concentration in plants to the initial Cd2+ concentration in the nutrient solution) with increasing ambient Cd2+ levels was best represented by regression power curves. At the lowest Cd2+ concentration which caused a significant decrease in the relative growth rate of duckweed, there was a decrease in manganese and zinc and an increase in the iron level in the plants. EDDHA and EDTA protected in some cases against the toxic action of cadmium without preventing its uptake by plants. It was thus observed that 9 μ M or higher levels of Cd2+ were toxic to Lemna gibba depending on the chelator and light regime. Duckweed grown in continuous light produced, in general, more dry matter and hence accumulated more cadmium.  相似文献

Abstract. A simulation of the quantitative influence of altitude on photosynthetic CO2 uptake capability (AP) included the effects of predicted changes (1) in air temperature (lapse rate) and (2) leaf temperature, (3) ambient pressure and CO2 concentration, and (4) the diffusion coefficient for CO2 in air. When a dry lapse rate (0.01°C m−1) in air temperature was simulated, significant declines (up to 14%) in AP were predicted from sea level to 4km altitude. A moist lapse rate of 0.003°C m−1 resulted in less than a 4% decrease in AP over the same altitude range. When natural leaf temperatures (predicted from heat balance analyses) were simulated, AP was significantly greater (∼20%) than when leaf temperatures were considered equal to air temperature for all lapse conditions. There was virtually no change in AP with altitude when predicted leaf temperatures and moist lapse conditions were simulated. There was a significant (∼10%) increase in AP with altitude when leaf temperature was held constant at 30°C (regardless of altitude) under moist lapse conditions. Future studies evaluating the effects of elevation on photosynthesis could benefit from the above considerations of the effects of natural leaf temperature regimes and prevailing lapse conditions on CO2 uptake potential.  相似文献

Danish rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, (40–65 g) were transferred to 28%o sea water at intervals throughout the early spring and summer. Gill Na+/K+-ATPase of fish kept in fresh water surged distinctly during May. Simultaneously, a body silvering occurred and plasma concentrations of Cl, Na+ and total thyroxine (T4) decreased. The seawater transfer-induced adaptive response in plasma electrolytes comprised a biphasic change, i.e., an adjustive peak phase and a regulatory phase lasting for 2 days and 1 week after transfer, respectively. Further, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity increased to a new level after an initial lag phase of 2–3 days, but electrolyte regulation was mostly initiated prior to the adaptive change in ATPase activity. In spite of increasing pre-transfer freshwater Na+/K+-ATPase activity during the spring, the electrolyte peak level, the degree of muscle dehydration and the mortality of fish transferred to sea water increased from April to July. The apparent uncoupling of freshwater Na+/K+-ATPase activity and plasma electrolyte regulation in sea water is discussed in relation to smelting and prediction of hypo-osmoregulatory performance.  相似文献

Abstract:  The growth, development and consumption of three successive generations of cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), reared on milky grains of spring wheat grown under elevated CO2 (double-ambient vs. ambient) in open-top chambers (OTCs) were examined. Decreases in protein, total amino acid, water and nitrogen content, and increases in total non-structure carbohydrates (TNCs) and ratio of TNC : nitrogen were found in wheat milky grains grown under elevated CO2 conditions. Changes in quality of wheat grains affected the growth, development and food utilization of H. armigera . Significantly longer larval lifespan for the third generation and lower pupal weight for all generations were observed in cotton bollworm fed on milky grains of spring wheat grown under elevated CO2 conditions. Bollworm fecundity was significantly decreased for the second and third generations under elevated CO2 levels. The consumption, frass per larva and relative consumption rate significantly increased in elevated CO2 compared with ambient CO2 conditions. However, the potential population consumption was significant reduced by elevated CO2 in the second and third generations. The results of this study indicate that elevated CO2 levels adversely affect grain quality, resulting in consistently increased consumption per larva for a longer period to produce less fecund bollworm through generations, suggesting that net damage of cotton bollworm on wheat will be less under elevated atmospheric CO2 levels because increased consumption is offset by slower development and reduced fecundity.  相似文献

Migration of wild juvenile chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha during the first 80 km of their 254 km migration through the Rogue River, Oregon, was significantly slower than that during the last 170 km. Gill Na+, K+ -ATPase specific activity did not increase significantly during the first 38 km of migration. Specific activities during the next 43 km did increase significantly. Specific activities continued to increase as the fish moved downstream, reaching a maximum within 44 km from the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

The metabolic response of juvenile coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch to different salinities was examined, using whole-animal oxygen consumption rates and gill Na+, K+-ATPase activities as indicators of osmoregulatory energetics. Coho salmon smolts were acclimated to fresh water (FW), isosmotic salinity (ISO, 10‰) and sea water (SW, 28‰) and were sampled for up to 6 weeks for plasma levels of cortisol, glucose and ions (Na+, K+, Cl), gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity and oxygen consumption rates. Following an initial adjustment period, plasma constituents in SW fish returned to near-FW values, indicating that the fish were acclimated to SW by day 21. Gill Na+, K+-ATPase activities on days 21 and 42 were lowest in ISO, higher in FW and highest in SW. This result is consistent with the idea that less energy would be required to maintain ion balance in an isosmotic environment, where the ionic gradients between extracellular fluid and water would be minimal. Oxygen consumption rates of swimming fish (1 body length s−1), however, did not differ significantly between the three test salinities after 6 weeks. The results of this study suggest that the metabolic response of juvenile salmonids to changes in salinity is dependent on life-history stage (e.g. fry v . smolt), and that oxygen consumption rates do not necessarily reflect osmoregulatory costs.  相似文献

The effects of elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide and ozone on diurnal patterns of photosynthesis have been investigated in field-grown spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum ). Plants cultivated under realistic agronomic conditions, in open-top chambers, were exposed from emergence to harvest to reciprocal combinations of two carbon dioxide and two ozone treatments: [CO2] at ambient (380 μmol mol−1, seasonal mean) or elevated (692 μmol mol−1) levels, [O3] at ambient (27 nmol mol−1, 7 hr seasonal mean) or elevated (61 nmol mol−1) levels. After anthesis, diurnal measurements were made of flag-leaf gas-exchange and in vitro Rubisco activity and content. Elevated [CO2] resulted in an increase in photoassimilation rate and a loss of excess Rubisco activity. Elevated [O3] caused a loss of Rubisco and a decline in photoassimilation rate late in flag-leaf development. Elevated [CO2] ameliorated O3 damage. The mechanisms of amelioration included a protective stomatal restriction of O3 flux to the mesophyll, and a compensatory effect of increased substrate on photoassimilation and photosynthetic control. However, the degree of protection and compensation appeared to be affected by the natural seasonal and diurnal variations in light, temperature and water status.  相似文献

The diurnal patterns of plasma growth hormone (GH), thyroid hormone and cortisol concentrations in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss held under three photoperiod (L : D) regimes (6 : 18, 12 : 12 and 18 : 6), and fed either daily (DF) or on alternate days (ADF) with 2·0% body mass per day of a commercial trout diet were determined. The ADF groups had reduced total mass gain and specific growth rates compared with DF fish, but photoperiod had no affect on growth for either of the feeding regime groups. In the ADF groups, the mean 24 h plasma thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations were significantly lower, both on days of feeding and days of fasting, than in DF fish held under all three photoperiod regimes, but for GH, only the 18L : 6D DF group was higher than the comparable ADF groups. There were no significant differences in mean 24 h plasma cortisol concentrations of DF and ADF groups. Diurnal patterns of plasma GH, cortisol, T4 and T3 were found in DF fish held under all three photoperiod regimes. Increases in plasma cortisol changes were associated with the onset of the light phase; elevations in plasma GH and T4 concentrations were more closely associated with clock time, regardless of photoperiod; increases in plasma T3 concentrations were strongly associated with time of feeding. In ADF groups, these diurnal changes in plasma GH, T4 and T3 concentrations were suppressed for both the fed and fast days, and plasma cortisol concentrations were suppressed on the fasting day. The observations are discussed in terms of the proposed anabolic, catabolic and growth regulating roles of these hormones in different growth and metabolic modifying situations in teleosts.  相似文献

Passive fluxes of K+ (86Rb) into roots of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L. cv. Uniflorus) were determined at low K+ concentration (0.1 and 1.0 mM K+) in the ambient solution. Metabolic uptake of K+ was inhibited by 10−4M 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP). K+ (86Rb) fluxes were studied both continuously and by time differentiation of uptake. In high K+ roots passive uptake was directly proportional to the K+ concentration of the uptake solution, indicating free diffusion. This assumption was supported by the fact that passive Rb+ uptake was not affected by high K+ concentrations. In low K+ roots the passive uptake of K+ was higher than in high K+ roots. The increase was possibly due to carrier-mediated K+ transport. As K+ effluxes were quantitatively similar to influxes, it is suggested that passive K+ fluxes represent exchange diffusion without relation to net K+ transport.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of nitric oxide (NO)-generating agents on 45Ca2+ uptake in rat brain slices and cultured rat astrocytes were studied in the presence of monensin, which is considered to drive the Na+-Ca2+ exchanger in the reverse mode. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) at >10 µ M increased monensin-stimulated Ca2+ uptake in the slices, although it did not affect high K+-stimulated Ca2+ uptake. Another NO donor, 3-morpholinosydnonimine, was effective. The effect of SNP was antagonized by hemoglobin (50 µ M ), a NO scavenger, and mimicked by 8-bromo-cyclic GMP (100 µ M ). In rat brain synaptosomes, SNP increased monensin-stimulated Ca2+ uptake, but it did not affect high K+-stimulated Ca2+ uptake. 8-Bromocyclic GMP, but not SNP, increased Na+-dependent Ca2+ uptake significantly in synaptic membrane vesicles in the absence of monensin. In cultured rat astrocytes, SNP and 8-bromo-cyclic GMP increased Ca2+ uptake in the presence of ouabain and monensin, which were required for the Ca2+ uptake in the cells. These findings suggest that NO stimulates the Na+-Ca2+ exchanger in neuronal preparations and astrocytes in a cyclic GMP-dependent mechanism.  相似文献

Cessation of shoot elongation in seedlings of Salix pentandra L. is induced by short photoperiod. Gibbereliin A9 (GA9) applied either to the apical bud or injected into a mature leaf, induced shoot elongation under a short photoperiod of 12 h, and GA9 could completely substitute for a transfer to a long photoperiod. When [3H]GA9 or [2H2]GA9 was injected into a leaf, no [3H]GA9 was detected in the elongating apex and only traces of [3H]GA9 were found in the shoot above the treated leaf. By the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), [2H2]GA20 was identified as the main metabolite of [2H2]GA9 in both the shoot and the treated leaf. In addition, [2H2]GA1 and [2H2]GA29 were also identified as metabolites of [2H2]GA9. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that exogenous GA, promotes shoot elongation in Salix through its metabolism to GA20 and GA,.  相似文献

Young trees of European beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) were exposed in a phytotron to different levels of ozone and CO2 under the climatic simulation of one vegetation period. High ozone levels were simulated similar to high ozone concentration in the field (up to 110 ppb), while CO2 was added as 300 ppm to the present level of ca 380 ppm. Our study describes different aspects of photosynthesis from the leaf level to the reactions of selected thylakoid components at different harvest times during growth of the beech trees under the different fumigation regimes. Ozone effects appeared in the first weeks of the treatment as a stimulation of chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), in oxygen production and in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity, while the summer and early autumn harvests showed strong reductions in these parameters. Only phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPcase) activity remained higher under high ozone. The effects of high CO2 appeared in general as a small stimulation in enzyme activity like PEPcase in spring. However, with increasing time of fumigation, reductions of all parameters were observed. Especially chlorophylls showed strong reductions under high CO2. The combined treatment with high ozone plus high CO2 resulted mostly in an amelioration of the negative ozone effects, although control levels were not reached.  相似文献

Transpiration rates of young Tamarix aphylla (L.) Karst, plants grown in hydroponics were measured under NaCl- and Cd(NO3)2-stress. Transpiration rates were negatively correlated with the relative humidity of the ambient air at all NaCl concentrations investigated. Low and intermediate concentrations of Cd2+ (45 and 90 μ M , respectively) in the medium caused an increase in transpiration rates. This was particularly pronounced at low levels of relative humidity. At 180 μ M Cd2+, transpiration rates dropped, probably as a result of root damage due to Cd2+ toxicity. Since the transpiration rates differed by a factor of ca 3 between day and night, it is concluded that the stomata did not lose their ability to regulate transpiration under the influence of NaCl or of Cd(NO3)2. The transpiration behaviour of T. aphylla indicates that the effect of water vapour pressure (presented as relative humidity) on the degree of stomatal opening is small. Under conditions of ample water supply transpiration follows the evaporative demand of the ambient air and is influenced by the water uptake capacity of the root system as well as by other environmental factors, e.g. light.  相似文献

Abstract: A continuous dual 13CO2 and 15NH415NO3 labelling experiment was undertaken to determine the effects of ambient (350μmol mol-1) or elevated (700μmol mol-1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations on C and N uptake and allocation within 3-year-old beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) during leafing. After six weeks of growth, total carbon uptake was increased by 63 % (calculated on total C content) under elevated CO2 but the carbon partitioning was not altered. 56 % of the new carbon was found in the leaves. On a dry weight basis was the content of structural biomass in leaves 10 % lower and the lignin content remained unaffected under elevated as compared to ambient [CO2]. Under ambient [CO2] 37 %, and under elevated [CO2] 51 %, of the lignin C of the leaves derived from new assimilates. For both treatments, internal N pools provided more than 90 % of the nitrogen used for leaf-growth and the partitioning of nitrogen was not altered under elevated [CO2]. The C/N ratio was unaffected by elevated [CO2] at the whole plant level, but the C/N ratio of the new C and N uptake was increased by 32 % under elevated [CO2].  相似文献

Puccinellia tenuiflora is a useful monocotyledonous halophyte that might be used for improving salt tolerance of cereals. This current work has shown that P. tenuiflora has stronger selectivity for K+ over Na+ allowing it to maintain significantly lower tissue Na+ and higher K+ concentration than that of wheat under short- or long-term NaCl treatments. To assess the relative contribution of Na+ efflux and influx to net Na+ accumulation, unidirectional 22Na+ fluxes in roots were carried out. It was firstly found that unidirectional 22Na+ influx into root of P. tenuiflora was significantly lower (by 31–37%) than in wheat under 100 and 150 m m NaCl. P. tenuiflora had lower unidirectional Na+ efflux than wheat; the ratio of efflux to influx was similar between the two species. Leaf secretion of P. tenuiflora was also estimated, and found the loss of Na+ content from leaves to account for only 0.0006% of the whole plant Na+ content over 33 d of NaCl treatments. Therefore, it is proposed that neither unidirectional Na+ efflux of roots nor salt secretion by leaves, but restricting unidirectional Na+ influx into roots with a strong selectivity for K+ over Na+ seems likely to contribute to the salt tolerance of P. tenuiflora .  相似文献

The deposition rate of sagittal otolith rings in post-metamorphosed plaice, Pleuronectes platessa , was considered in relation to body growth under three feeding levels and two photoperiod regimes. Feeding levels and photoperiods significantly influenced the number of rings; more rings were deposited at higher levels of feeding and in longer photoperiod regimes. There was also a linear relationship between fish growth and the number of rings. The results suggest that sagittal rings could be used for aging wild juvenile plaice during the period of the growing season when growth rate is greater than 0.1 mm day1.  相似文献

Gldfish, Carassius auratus of varying sizes were conditioned in continuous light or darkness f or 10, 20 and 30 days and the incorporation of 3H-thymidine into the gonads was investigated to attempt to develop a bioassay for fish gonadotropins.
The 24-hour gonadal 3H-thymidine of 10-day conditioned fish was significantly less at the dose level of 0.5 μCi 3H-thymidine/fish compared to 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 μCi/fish which gave gonadal activities not significantly different from each other. Thus, for all subsequent work the dose of 1.0 μCi/fish was used.
Photoperiod of continuous light or darkness had little effect on fish weighing less than 11 g but in fish 11-15 g conditioned for 20 days in darkness and fish greater than 16 g conditioned for 10 days in darkness, depression in gonadal 3H-thymidine incorporation occurred. In fish 11-15 g, prolonged conditioning for 30 days in darkness induced more gonadal activity than was observed at 20 days.
The effect of injection of Channa striatus pituitary extract at doses of 1 mg/10 g body weight and 5 mg/10 g body weight induced a significant increase in 3H-thymidine incorporation in the gonads over saline injected controls. The results suggest the potential of using photoperiod as a means of inducing regression of gonads of suitable fish in a bioassay of gonadotropins.  相似文献

Abstract Unidirectional fluxes of Na+, Cl and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3-MG) were measured in vitro across Campylobacter jejuni live culture-infected and control rat ileal short-circuited tissues by the Using Chamber technique. Net secretion of Na+ and enhanced secretion of Cl ions was observed in the infected animals ( P < 0.001, n =6) as compared to the net absorption of Na+ and marginal secretion of Cl ions in the control animals. There was a significant decrease in the mucosal-to-serosal fluxes of 3-MG in C. jejuni -infected rat ileum. The specific Na+,K+-ATPase activity when measured biochemically in the membrane-rich fraction of enterocytes was found to be significantly lower (58%) in the infected group as compared to the control group ( P < 0.001). Our results therefore suggest that infection with an enterotoxigenic C. jejuni inhibits the Na+,K+-ATPase activity in rat enterocytes. The impairment of Na+,K+-ATPase activity thus appears to induce a secondary change in Na+,Cl and 3-MG transport in vitro in rat ileum.  相似文献
