Summary To test for different gene activity during ageing, an experiment was set up to determine whether or not genetic variation and genetic correlations between fitness traits at different ages change in a systematic way through time. Additive genetic and environmental variance components as well as genetic correlations between different age periods were calculated for the fitness trait number of adult offspring in a population of Drosophila melanogaster. Genetic correlations between age periods were all positive and, hence, did not support the theory postulating that genes with beneficial effects on early fitness have pleiotropic unfavourable effects on late fitness. The environmental variation as well as the additive genetic variance showed a clear increase with age. The increase of environmental variation is probably a result of the individuals' increasing difficulties in coping with environmental stress due to physiological deterioration with age. Increased additive genetic variation may be explained by more and more genes being turned on with age. Alternatively, it could be caused by accumulation of deleterious mutations with different effects and may reflect the individuals' capacity of DNA repair.  相似文献

Summary A selection experiment with Drosophila melanogaster was carried out to test some theories of ageing by calculating genetic parameters for a reproductive fitness trait at different ages. Successful selection for increased lifespan showed that longevity is a trait under genetic control. Positive genetic correlations between early and late fitness were found. These results do not support the pleiotropy theory of ageing which predicts a negative genetic correlation. Both environmental and additive genetic variation clearly increased with age. Increased environmental variation probably reflects the individuals' difficulties in coping with environmental stress. The increase in additive genetic variation supports the mutation accumulation theory of ageing, as well as other theories that postulate increased additive genetic variation with age.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted with 160 Hisex Brown laying hens to evaluate the effect of different inclusion levels of faba bean (FB) and enzyme supplementation on productive performance and egg quality parameters. The experimental diets consisted of five levels of FB: 0% (control), 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, substituting soybean meal (SBM), and two levels of enzyme supplementation (0 or 250 mg/kg). Each dietary treatment was assigned to four replicate groups and the experiment lasted 22 weeks. A positive relationship (P < 0.05) was found between FB inclusion and body weight (BW) change of hens when compared to those of the control treatment. Enzyme supplementation significantly affected the final hens’ BW. Feed consumption (FC) of hens was statistically increased with increasing FB level up to 50%. Supplementing dietary enzyme mixture at 250 mg/kg led to improvement in FC at all studied ages (P < 0.05). Inclusion of 25% or 50% FB in diets had no adverse effects on feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the higher FB inclusion levels (75% or 100%). Egg weight (EW), egg number (EN) and egg mass (EM) were significantly (P < 0.05) influenced by FB inclusion in diet during the entire experimental periods, except for EN and EM at 20–24 weeks of age. Egg productive parameters were not influenced by enzyme mixture supplementation (P > 0.05). The main effect of FB levels replacing for SBM affected (P < 0.05) yolk and shell percentages, yolk index, yolk to albumen ratio, shell thickness and egg shape index. It can be concluded that FB and enzyme supplementation could be included in hens diet at less than 50% instead of SBM to support egg productive performance, however higher raw FB levels negatively affected egg production indices and quality.  相似文献

Diapausing egg banks of aquatic zooplankton have the potential to remain viable for decades or even centuries, and can thus harbour potentially high levels of genetic variation. Diapausing (ephippial) eggs from the Daphnia galeata–hyalina complex (Crustacea: Anomopoda) in Lake Constance (Bodensee), Germany, were isolated from sections of dated sediment cores, hatched in the laboratory, and established as a clone bank. We used cellulose acetate electrophoresis at four polymorphic enzyme loci (Pgm, Pgi, Ao, and Got) to examine long-term temporal changes in the genetic composition of the hatchling pool. Our results indicate that significant shifts have occurred in the genetic structure of this population, which parallel concomitant shifts in the trophic state of Lake Constance during the past 25–35 years. Here we discuss the utility of egg bank propagules as good model organisms to study microevolution, as related to past environmental change.  相似文献

Under natural conditions, the feral hen (Gallus gallus domesticus) will choose a nest location away from the flock, whereas under commercial conditions, the domestic hen will often choose the same nest as other hens have used or are still using. Simultaneous nest sharing causes several welfare problems to laying hens, and egg production may also be negatively affected. Understanding what causes this difference in nest location selection may provide solutions to the problems associated with simultaneous nest sharing. The aims were to investigate whether a commercial strain of laying hens normally housed in intensive production systems share nests under semi-natural conditions and to describe the behaviour if this behaviour occurred. Twenty 15 weeks old hens were released into an 840 m2 enclosure with multiple options for natural and semi-natural nest sites. Over a 63-day period records were made daily of each nest with regard to number of eggs, position, and materials used. On five mornings nesting behaviour was observed. Nest sharing occurred on all but the first 5 days of egg-laying. The majority of hens (n = 14) chose to visit an occupied nest at least once, but no hens exclusively used occupied nests. Visits in shared nests lasted longer than visits in undisturbed nests (13 min 50 s (±4 min and 57 s) vs 30 min 44 s (±4 min and 55 s); P < 0.001). Fifteen nests were used. All shared nests (n = 5) were placed up against the borders, whereas the majority of non-shared nests (n = 7 out of 10) were placed more than 1 m away from the borders (P = 0.002). Some results indicate that nest sharing was caused by environmental restrictions.  相似文献

Hesperetin and naringenin phytochemicals are naturally occurring flavanoids in citrus fruits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementing different levels of extracted hesperetin and naringenin on egg quality, serum traits and antioxidant activity in laying hens. Two experiments were conducted, each for 10 weeks, in a completely randomized experiment design. Each had 100 Leghorn laying hens (26 weeks old) randomly assigned into five groups (n = 20) based on dietary categories of hesperetin 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 g/kg and naringenin 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 g/kg. Experimental results indicated that there was increased (P<0.05) egg production in the 1 g/kg naringenin-supplemented group, but lower (P<0.05) egg production in the hesperetin- and naringenin-supplemented groups given 4 g/kg. Cholesterol content (per gram yolk) and total cholesterol content (per egg) were lower (P<0.05) in the hesperetin- and naringenin-supplemented groups as compared to the control group, and the 2 g/kg hesperetin- and naringenin-supplemented groups showed the most significant difference. Both serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations were lower (P<0.05) in the 2 g/kg hesperetin- and naringenin-supplemented groups. The SOD and catalase activities, scavenging O2 and iron-chelating abilities were higher (P<0.05) in the 2 g/kg hesperetin- and naringenin-supplemented groups, and the trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity was higher (P<0.05) in the 2 g/kg naringenin-supplemented group. The results confirmed that both hesperetin and naringenin could lower serum and egg yolk cholesterol levels, and improve the antioxidant activities, however the measured variables generally showed significant quadratic responses to increasing amounts of the compounds. The recommended supplementation level of hesperetin and naringenin is 2 g/kg of the basal diet for reduced serum and yolk cholesterols contents and increased antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

Housing layers in battery cages is a practice still used by many countries but it has been criticized because of its influence on behavioral repertoire of birds. We investigated whether simple and affordable enrichment devices alone impact behavior, foot condition and performance of laying hens housed in conventional cages. Hens were divided into plain cages (CON), cages with perches (PER), and cages with tassels and scratch-pads (ENR), and parameters were evaluated before and after enrichment placement. After perch placement inactivity, drinking and competition for space reduced 35.6%, 40.8% and 70.3%, respectively, whereas social interaction increased 19.3%. Both modifications decreased locomotion (75.0% and 42.4% for PER and ENR respectively) and abnormal behaviors (62.5% and 43.9.4% for PER and ENR respectively). None of the performance variables were affected by ENR or PER. Thermography was more efficient than visual inspection in detecting subclinical bumblefoot, and it confirmed that PER reduced subclinical and clinical cases. Our findings indicate that perches increased welfare-related behaviors and foot health of hens, supporting the use of these inexpensive and highly adaptable alternatives for the enrichment of battery cages.  相似文献

该文于2008年4月采自南定河支流小勐统河的多鳞荷马条鳅(Homatula pycnolepis)群体(204尾,年龄仅为1~2龄,缺乏≥3龄个体,年龄结构简单);2007—2009年采自怒江流域4个采样点的多鳞荷马条鳅群体(80尾)的Cytb基因与群体遗传多样性及遗传结构分析共发现44个多态位点,仅定义4个单倍型,总体单倍型多样性(Hd)及核苷酸多样性(Pi)分别为0.7595及0.015,而怒江流域各采样点群体的Hd及Pi均为0,显示各地理群体遗传多样性丧失。怒江区域组、南定河组群体之间遗传分化明显,遗传距离为0.0356,组间分隔时间较久。由于被分离为小种群且面临较大捕捞压力,怒江多鳞荷马条鳅种群遗传多样性丧失,种群年龄结构简单,且怒江区域、南定河区域及澜沧江流域种群应被作为不同遗传管理单元而进行种群管理。  相似文献

Birds from Rhode Island Red (RIR) origin show a lower fear response and less feather pecking than birds from White Leghorn (WL) origin. This study investigated whether responses in fear eliciting tests were affected if RIR and WL birds were housed together. Experimental groups contained either birds from one line only ('pure' groups) or an equal number of RIR and WL birds ('mixed' groups). These arrangements were maintained from hatch onwards, throughout the rearing and laying period. Birds were subjected to open field tests at 5-6 weeks and 17-18 weeks of age and to manual restraint tests at 7-8 weeks and 24 weeks of age. RIR birds were more active in both open field tests and in the manual restraint test at 24 weeks of age as compared with WL birds. RIR birds from pure groups were more active in the open field test at 17-18 weeks and in the manual restraint test at 24 weeks of age than RIR birds from mixed groups. These results suggest that otherwise low fearful RIR birds may adopt a higher fear response if they are housed together with more fearful conspecifics. These effects do not emerge until after 8 weeks of age.  相似文献

A commercial-feed-grade form of zinc propionate was examined as a potential feed amendment at a concentration of 1% zinc to induce molt in 90-wk-old hens. Dietary treatments consisted, of 4 treatment groups of 28 birds each randomly assigned to either (1) molted conventionally by feed withdrawal, (2) 1% zinc as Zn acetate, (3) 1% zinc as Zn propionate, or (4) nonmolted control for 9 d. Ovary weights of hens fed Zn acetate or Zn propionate were not significantly different from each other, but hens fed Zn acetate or Zn propionate were significantly (p<0.05) lighter than the ovary weight of nonmolted control hens. Zinc concentrations in the kidney and liver were significantly (p<0.05) increased in both Zn acetate- and Zn propionate-molted hens when compared to either nonmolted control-fed hens or feed-withdrawal molted hens. Over the entire 3-mo postmolt period, there were no significant differences in interior or exterior egg qualities among the four treatments Egg production of hens fed Zn acetate was significantly lower than feed-withdrawal hens, Zn propionate-fed hens, or nonmolted control hens (p<0.05). The data of the current study demonstrated that feeding a feed grade of Zn propionate (1% Zn)-supplemented diet can induce molt and retain postmolt egg quality and production comparable to hens molted by feed withdrawal.  相似文献

Sequential feeding (SF) consists of splitting energy (E) and protein/calcium (P) fractions temporally, improving the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of hens compared with a continuous distribution during the day. In a previous study, the E fraction (with a low level of protein) was provided in the morning, whereas the P fraction (with low level of energy) was given in the afternoon. However, there is no clear evidence that a requirement in energy or proteins is connected to these distribution sequences, whereas the requirement for calcium is known to be required in the afternoon. To evaluate the effects on performances of the modulation of energy and protein supplies in SF, five different sequential treatments were offered: E0P0/E0P0; E+P+/E−P−; E+P−/E−P+; E0P+/E0P− and E+P0/E−P0 where E+ represents a high energy level, E0 a moderate one and E− a low one (with the same meaning for P regarding protein supply). Afternoon fractions were provided with particulate calcium. A total of 168 Hendrix hens were housed in individual cages from 20 to 39 weeks of age in two environmentally contrasted rooms. Feed intake in the morning and afternoon fractions, egg production, egg weight, BW and weight of digestive organs were recorded. No diet effect was observed concerning feed intake, egg production and BW. These results suggested that hens are not able to fit their feed intake on energy or protein level of fractions within half-day duration, whereas at the day scale same protein and energy intakes were observed. Moreover, the time of nutrient distribution in feeding did not seem to have an impact on birds’ performances. These studies have also demonstrated that, despite strong environmental pressure, the hens with SF had attenuated performance but continue to produce eggs.  相似文献

Yolk fatty acid (FA) concentrations and egg quality were evaluated with respect to the inclusion of different levels of marine fish oil (MFO) and linseed oil (LO) in a basal diet. Ten diets were arranged factorially with two levels of MFO addition (15 and 17 g/kg) and five levels of linseed oil (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 g/kg). Two commercial feeds with no n-3 FA sources added, or containing 15 g MFO/kg served as controls for egg sensorial quality traits. Type of diet did not affect egg production traits, nor total fat content in yolk or saturated and monounsaturated FA concentration in yolk fat. An increase in the inclusion of MFO from 15 to 17 g/kg increased (P<0.05) egg yolk content of total n-3 FA, C20:5 n-3 and C22:6 n-3 by 3.3, 9.8 and 3.5%, respectively. Linseed oil addition increased linearly (P<0.001) the level of total n-3 FA and the proportion of C18:3 n-3, C20:5 n-3, C22:5 n-3 and C22:6 n-3 retained in yolk fat by respectively 131, 12.0, 6.9 and 20.7% between extreme diets. Efficiency of retention of n-3 FA decreased (P<0.001) with dietary level of n-3 FA, and with the dietary ratio of MFO to LO. Both MFO and LO addition decreased (P<0.001) C20:4 n-6 to C18:2 n-6 ratio in yolk. Sensorial quality of eggs was not affected by treatments and did not differ with respect of that obtained in commercial n-3 FA enriched eggs. No interaction was found between LO and MFO addition for any of the traits studied. Regression equations have been calculated in order to predict efficiency of retention and yolk fat content of LC n-3 and n-6 FA from dietary characteristics.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to contribute to the discussion of overdosing vitamin E in laying hens. A total of 45 laying hens, divided into 5 groups were fed diets supplemented with either 0; 100; 1000; 10 000 or 20 000 mg dl‐α‐tocopheryl acetate/kg diet over a period of 10 weeks. Concentrations of vitamins A and E were measured in plasma, various tissues and egg yolk. Furthermore egg yolk colour and some carotinoids were measured in egg yolks. None of the vitamin E doses significantly influenced performance of the hens. As expected, vitamin E concentration in plasma, all tissue samples and egg yolk was significantly increased with increasing tocopherol content in the diet. The egg yolk showed the highest vitamin E concentration, followed by liver and muscles. Feeding 1000 mg α‐tocopheryl acetate per kg diet resulted in an increase of vitamin A concentration in the liver. Very high doses (10 000 and 20 000 mg/kg diet) significantly decreased retinol concentration in the liver and egg yolk, as well as carotinoid concentration in the egg yolk. The lower carotinoid concentration in egg yolk resulted in a decreased intensity of egg yolk colour. A prooxidative and/or competitive effect of very high doses of vitamin E with other fat soluble substances has been discussed.  相似文献

土壤水分的时空变异是指在一定的景观内,不同时间、地点和土层的土壤水分特征存在明显的差异性和多样性。土壤水分时空变异是由多重尺度上的土地利用(植被)、气象(降雨)、地形、土壤、人为活动等诸因子综合作用的结果,但就其某一具体地区而言存在着重点尺度和主控因子,土壤水分时空变异的重点尺度与主控因子的时空关系因时间、空间和尺度而异。本文综述了土壤水分(尤其是黄土高原地区)的时空变异与其环境因子时空关系的研究进展,并提出了广眨开展多重时空尺度上土壤水分的时空变异与其诸因素的时空关系,研究土壤水分时空变异性的尺度转换规律,确定重点尺度及其相应的主控因子。  相似文献

Introduction

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease, caused by mutations in the FMF gene MEFV (MEditerranean FeVer). It has a large phenotypic diversity even in patients with similar genotypes. Despite evidence that environmental factors (EFs) and genetic factors, including MEFV mutations (such as M694V, E148Q) and background modifier genes (MGs), affect the clinical manifestations of FMF, the relative contribution of each remains unknown.

Methods

To investigate the relative contribution of environmental and genetic factors to the phenotype of FMF, we compared the intra-pair clinical concordance of 10 mono and 7 dizygotic twins with FMF. The part played by EFs was determined by the phenotypic discordance of the monozygous twins, and the MGs effect was determined by deducing the environmental effect, computed for MZ twins, from the phenotypic discordance of the dizygous twins.

Results

The mean ± SD of intra-pair concordance was higher in the MZ than in DZ twin group (88.1 ± 13.2 vs. 70.7 ± 14.1 respectively, P value < 0.05). Based on the concordance in clinical manifestations in MZ and DZ twins, the environmental effect on the phenotype of FMF is estimated as 11.9% ± 6.6% and the MGs effect as 17.4% ± 15.5% in average.

Conclusions

In FMF the phenotype is affected by MEFV mutations, MGs and EFs in an estimated ratio of about 6:1.5:1 respectively.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of diet supplementation of laying hens with Enterococcus faecalis (EF) on egg production, egg quality and caecal microbiota. A total of 360 Hy-Line Brown laying hens (72 weeks old) were divided into three groups with four replicates of 30 birds each. The laying hens were fed with the basal diet (Control), the basal diet + 3.75 · 108 cfu EF/kg (Group I) or the basal diet + 7.5 · 108 cfu EF/kg (Group II). The experiment lasted for 45 d. Eggs and caecal samples were collected at the end of the experiment. Results showed that dietary supplementation with EF did not affect the average daily egg weight, cracked egg rate, mortality and egg quality. However, EF supplementation caused a significantly increased laying rate and decreased feed/egg ratio (p < 0.05). The differences in caecal microbiota between Group II and the Control were significant. The relative abundance of Verrucomicrobia and Cyanobacteria at the phylum level, Rikenellaceae, Christensenellaceae and Veillonellaceae at the family level, and the Faecalibacterium, Christensenellaceae R-7 group and Eubacterium coprostanoligenes group at the genus level changed significantly in Group II compared with the Control (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the tested dietary supplementations with EF improved product performance and affected the caecal microbial community structure of laying hens during the late laying period.  相似文献

Summary Argumentation is presented which indicates that the additive decomposition of the total genetic variation of a population into variation within and between (among) its subpopulations suffers from conceptual inconsistency. While the measurement of variation between subpopulations can be shown to be identical to the measurement of subpopulation differentiation, the notion of variation within subpopulations, when viewed as a single measurement, cannot be derived as an independent and cogent concept. Rather, it appears to be merely technically defined as the arithmetic difference between the total variation and the variation between subpopulations, and this difference happens to be non-negative for concave measures of variation such as the (statistical) variance or certain measures of genetic diversity. In order to overcome the conceptual inconsistency, variation between subpopulations could be regarded as subpopulation differentiation and the notion of variation within subpopulations could be replaced by measurements of the degree to which the variation in the total population is represented within the subpopulations. A complementary situation with respect to total variation is thus realized once more, and appropriate measures can be directly derived from existing ones.  相似文献

Hens well adapted to free-range systems should react quickly to avoid an attack by a predator but should also be able to return to the hen run soon after to ensure good use of the outside area. To ascertain if some strains cope better with a frightening event the fear reaction of three different genetic strains to a simulated hawk attack in a free-range system was tested. Eight groups of 21 hens composed of the three different strains (LSL, ISA brown and ISA black), were exposed to a simulated hawk attack. Fear reaction and recovery times were video recorded and the use of the hen run was observed. Although the hens did react to the simulated hawk attack as expected by running back into or in direction to the poultry house, no significant strain differences were found either in the reaction or recovery time or in the course of the hen run used. Regarding fear reaction no strain was found to have better features for use as free-range laying hen regarding the behaviour after a frightening event.  相似文献
