Abstract

During the last 30 years, supporters of the animal rights movement have questioned the use of animals for human benefit and have campaigned for improvements in their welfare. In the present study, activists' representations of animals and animal rights were investigated by interviewing 23 participants (from three animal welfare and animal rights organizations) during four focus-group discussions. Results show that the activists' representations were generated from the love/pain thema, which on the one hand showed the compassion and love the activists have for animals, and on the other hand the suffering that animals can endure. Moreover, differences were found in this study in the way that members of the three animal welfare and rights organizations constructed their views of animals. While members of two out of the three organizations aimed to protect abandoned animals, members of the Anti-Vivisection League faced the contradictions within the human–animal relationship and endorsed a more coherent approach to animals. These findings are interpreted in light of previous studies conducted on the animal rights movement and of recent developments in social representation theory.  相似文献

Effect of whole body gamma irradiation (1200 r) on spleen lipid metabolism of male and female rats 24 hrs and 48 hrs after irradiation and the effect of radioprotective chemicals vis. AET, serotonin, their mixture and cystamine on radiation induced changes in spleen lipid metabolism has been studied. In male rats both 24 and 48 hrs after irradiation a significant increase in spleen total lipids, cholesterol, phospholipids, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine was observed. Administration of AET before irradiation prevented the changes in spleen total lipids and cholesterol but not in phospholipids, which was prevented by prior administration of both serotonin and the mixture of serotonin and AET. In female rats 24 hrs after irradiation only spleen total lipids showed an increase which was prevented by prior administration of cystamine. In male rats, 24 hrs after irradiation the incorporation of NaH2 32PO4 (counts/min/ug PLP and counts/min/g spleen) into spleen total phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine was reduced and this was corrected by prior administration of AET. Serotonin and the mixture of serotonin + AET did not protect the specific activity of phosphatidy choline. In female rats irradiation increased the incorporation of NaH2 32PO4 into phosphatidylcholine, which was not prevented by prior administration of cystamine. The fatty acid composition of spleen lipid of female rats was profoundly altered 24 hrs after irradiation. Palmitic acid and oleic acid showed an increase whereas arachidonic and fatty acid above arachidonic acid showed an decrease, which were corrected by administration of cystamine before irradiation.  相似文献

The effects of a range of compounds were assessed using cellsuspension cultures of three species. The results were comparedwith previous data on seedlings and calli of the same species.The effects on seedlings of Lycopersicon esculentum, Solanumnigrum and Cirsium arvense were compared with those on cellcultures of the same species. There was a significant correlationbetween the suspension cultures and the calli from which theywere derived. When the results for seedlings were compared withthose for suspension cultures, the major deviations from positivecorrelations were compounds inhibiting the cells more than theydid the whole plants. Thus cell suspension cultures can be usedto assess possible phytotoxicity as well as to detect potentialtoxicity of compounds not penetrating into or being translocatedin whole plants. alpha-Adrenoceptor agonists of both main groups, i. e. arylalkylamines and imidazolines, have a pronounced radioprotective effect. Their chemical analogs, which fail to stimulate alpha-adrenoceptors, do not protect mice. The effect of phenylephrine, adrenaline, and noradrenaline comes into play via alpha 1-adrenoceptors and that of clonidine, via alpha 2-adrenoceptors and also via alpha 1-adrenoceptors. Adrenoceptor agonists can probably manifest their radioprotective action via both subtypes of alpha-adrenoceptors. Possible intracellular mechanisms of the radioprotective action are discussed.  相似文献

Isoproterenol of ED50 = 0.16 mumol/kg is highly effective in protecting mice against ionizing radiation and has the high therapeutical index. There are three new indications that isoproterenol exerts its radioprotective action via beta-adrenoceptors. They are: the effect of isoproterenol is prevented by three additional beta-adrenoceptor antagonists, the isoproterenol effect is reproduced by the seven studied beta-adrenoceptor agonists of different chemical structure, and with chemical analogs which fail to stimulate beta-adrenoceptors the radioprotective effect is absent. Both beta 1 and beta 2 adrenoceptor agonists are protective agents. Mechanisms of the radioprotective action are discussed.  相似文献

Dehydrozingerone (DZ) was explored for in vitro-in vivo antioxidant potential and in vivo radioprotective activity against whole body gamma irradiation in Swiss albino mice. DZ scavenged the ABTS (2, 2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and DPPH (1, 1-dipehnyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radicals at room temp. DZ reduced Fe (III) to Fe (II) at pH 7.4 and scavenged the NADH/phenazine methosulfate generated superoxide radical in cell free system. DZ also scavenged the nitric oxide radical generated by sodium nitroprusside. To evaluate the radioprotective activity, mice were exposed to whole body gamma irradiation 30 min after the drug treatment at a dose rate of 1.66 Gy/min. Pretreatment with DZ 75, 100 and 125 mg/kg, i.p. reduced the radiation induced mortality and increased the mean survival times (MSTs). An i.p. dose of DZ 100 mg/kg was found the most effective dose in preventing radiation sickness and increasing the MST. Pretreatment DZ100 mg/kg maintained the spleen index (spleen weight/body weight x 100) and stimulates the endogenous spleen colony forming units (CFU). Pretreatment with DZ100 mg/kg maintained the villus height close to normal, prevents mucosal erosion and basement membrane damage in irradiated mice jejunum. However, no significant reductions in dead, inflammatory and mitotic cells were observed in DZ pretreated mice, but there was an increased in crypt cells proliferation and regeneration. Pretreatment with DZ100 mg/kg significantly elevated the endogenous antioxidant enzymes (GSH, GST and SOD) in mice at 2, 4 and 8 h post sham irradiation. Radiation induced fall in endogenous antioxidant enzymes was significantly prevented by DZ pretreatment. Pretreatment with DZ 75 and 100 mg/kg reduced the radiation induced micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MPCE) and normochromatic erythrocytes (MNCE) in mice bone marrow. DZ also maintained the polychromatic erythrocytes (PCE) and normochromatic erythrocytes (NCE) ratio (P/N ratio) in irradiated mice. Dose modifying factor (DMF) was calculated by using the graded radiation dose (8.0, 9.0, 9.5 and 10 Gy). DZ 100 mg/kg elevated radiation LD(50) from 9.1 to 10.0 Gy, indicating the DMF of 1.09.  相似文献

Spleen cells of C57BL/6 mice produced high amounts of PGE in vitro when tested 5 to 10 days after injection of heat-killed C. parvum organisms. Little or no PGE was produced by spleen cells from untreated mice or from mice injected with a strain of coryneform bacteria that does not stimulate the lymphoreticular system of mice. Significant release of PGE from spleen cells of C. parvum injected mice could be detected as early as 30 min after initiating the cultures and maximal levels were usually seen after 48 hr. Treatment by indomethacin completely abolished this PGE production. Removal of the adherent population from the spleen cell suspension resulted in markedly decreased levels of PGE, but PGE release of the remaining population was never completely abolished. These data suggest that the cells responsible for most of the PGE synthesis in this system were adherent cells, presumably macrophages. The levels of PGE produced in spleen cells of C. parvum-treated mice were further increased by in vitro addition of C. parvum. This effect could also be observed after addition of zymosan particles indicating that it was not an immunologically specific effect. The reported data suggest that prostaglandins may represent important mediator molecules of the described immunostimulatory and immunosuppressive effects of C. parvum.  相似文献

A single injection of Archangelica officinalis Hoffm. and Ledum palustre L. extracts to mice 5-15 min before irradiation with a median lethal dose increased their survival rate. The most favourable effect was produced by a combination of the two preparations: by day 30 100% of animals survived after a dose of 6 Gy (LD50/30); 70% survived after a dose of 7.5 Gy (LD90/30), and 25% after a dose of 8 Gy (LD100/12). Some biological properties of Murayama virus, a new paramyxovirus, were studied. The virus grew well in primary monkey kidney cells as well as embryonated eggs, while the virus yields in primary chick embryo and BHK-21 cells were much lower. The infected BHK-21 cells formed large syncytia and showed typical hemadsorption, but did not produce any detectable amount of hemagglutinin in the culture fluid. The virus yields were very low in Vero. LLC-MK2 and MDCK cells at first passages. The addition of trypsin to the medium enhanced virus growth in Vero and LLC-MK2 but not in MDCK cells. Cell fusion activity of the virus was observed in Molt-4 cells. Hemolytic activity was enhanced by freeze-thawing. Several species of mammals and birds were susceptible to experimental infections with the virus as evidenced by seroconversion and positive virus isolation without showing any clinical signs.  相似文献

Leproma pieces obtained from leprosy patients and M. leprae-infected animals were cultivated by the method of primary explantation. It is noted that the development of a monolayer from macrophages overloaded with M. leprae is a characteristic common to the lepromas of various origin. Antileprosy activity of the drugs under study was assessed by the rate of decrease in mycobacterial load of macrophages. Species features of cultivated lepromas from man, nine-banded armadillo and mouse are characterised. While cultivating lepromas from leprosy patients the peculiarities of tissue culture organization are found out representing immune status and prognosis of specific therapy.  相似文献

In the long-term cultivated callus cultures ofMatricaria recutita L. the identical concentration changes in the biosynthesis of glutathione, glutamate, aspartate, total thiols and proteins were detected within the subculture. The level of oxidized glutathione during the growth of callus culture was low with the highest value 10.66 nmol g-1 on the 13th day of subculture. The ratio GSH/GSSG which significantly influences the redox processes in a cell, and the activity of glutathione reductase increased from the 8th day. Ascorbate formation was detected on the 17th day, although no relation between the ascorbate synthesis and the concentration of glutathione and glutathione reductase was found.  相似文献
