The limitations of heart rate as a predictor of metabolic rate in fish   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Although telemetered heart rate (fH) has been used as a physiological correlate to predict the metabolic rate (as oxygen consumption, V?O2) of fish in the field, it is our contention that the method has not been validated adequately for fish. If fH in fish is to be used to estimate V?O2, a single linear (or log-linear) relationship must be established for each species between the two variables which allows V?O2 to be predicted accurately under all environmentally relevant conditions. Our analyses of existing data indicate that while a good linear (or log-linear) relationship can be established between fH and V?O2, the conditions under which the relationship applies may be quite restricted. Physiological states and environmental factors affect the relationship between fH and V?O2 significantly such that several curves can exist for a single species. In addition, there are situations in which fH and V?O2 do not covary in a significant manner. In some situations fH can vary over much of its physiological range while V?O2 remains constant; in others V?O2 may vary while fH is invariate. The theoretical basis for this variability is examined to explain why the use of telemetered fH in predicting V?O2 of fish may be limited to certain specified applications.  相似文献

The field metabolic rates (FMRs) of nine captive goosanders, Mergus merganser , released on two Scottish rivers were estimated using the doubly-labelled water (DLW) technique. Mean (± S.E.) FMR was 2.322±0.239ml CO2 g−1 h−1 and daily energy expenditure (DEE) 1939 ± 184 kJ per day. This was significantly greater (x 1.5) than previous estimates which assumed DEE to be three times the basal metabolic rate (BMR) based on regression equations predicting BMR from body mass. FMR of captives and dietary data from previous studies were used to estimate daily consumption of salmon, Salmo salar , smolts and parr by natural populations of these ducks on the river North Esk, north-east Scotland. Goosanders are likely to consume 480-522 g fish per day of which two-thirds are juvenile salmon; equivalent to a daily intake of 10-11 smolts and 48-52 parr. Annual predation of smolts by goosanders was estimated to be between 8000 and 15 000 or 3 and 16% of annual production.  相似文献

Objective: This study examined the repeatability of measuring resting metabolic rate (RMR) in preschool children and the effect of different calculation protocols. Research Methods and Procedures: Eleven children (4 females and 7 males) participated in the project. They were recruited through advertisements in local schools and community centers. Resting metabolic rate was measured on 3 occasions over a 2‐week period, each after an overnight fast and each lasting ~20 to 25 minutes. Results were compared using repeated‐measures ANOVA to check for repeatability, and a number of methods of calculating RMR were assessed. Results: Repeatability of RMR measurements was good (coefficient of variation of replicates, 6.8%), with no significant difference between days of measurement. The lowest RMR measurement was obtained when the first 10 minutes were excluded and periods during which large activity was observed were excluded. This measurement was, on average, 4% lower than averaging the measurements after the first 5 minutes, including body movements. Discussion: This study suggests that RMR can be measured in preschool children and that the best method for calculating RMR in these subjects is to exclude periods when large body movements occur and the first 10 minutes of the measurement period. Only a single measurement of RMR is needed to obtain a reliable estimate.  相似文献

Objective: African American women have a high prevalence of obesity, which partially may be explained by their lower rates of resting energy expenditure (REE). The aim of this study was to examine the influence of acute sibutramine administration on REE and post‐exercise energy expenditure in African American women. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 15 premenopausal, African American women (age, 29 ± 5 years; body fat, 38 ± 7%) completed a randomized, double‐blind cross‐over design with a 30‐mg ingestion of sibutramine or a placebo. Each trial was completed a month apart in the follicular phase and included a 30‐minute measurement of REE 2.5 hours after sibutramine or placebo administration. This was followed by 40 minutes of cycling at ~70% of peak aerobic capacity and a subsequent 2‐hour measurement of post‐cycling energy expenditure. Results: There was no difference (p > 0.05) in REE (23.70 ± 2.81 vs. 23.69 ± 2.95 kcal/30 min), exercise oxygen consumption (1.22 ± 0.15 vs. 1.25 ± 0.15 liter/min), and post‐cycling energy expenditure (104.2 ± 12.7 vs. 104.9 ± 11.4 kcal/120 min) between the sibutramine and placebo trials, respectively. Cycling heart rate was significantly higher (p = 0.01) during the sibutramine (158 ± 14 beats/min) vs. placebo (150 ± 12 beats/min) trials. Discussion: These data demonstrate that acute sibutramine ingestion does not increase REE or post‐exercise energy expenditures but does increase exercising heart rate in overweight African American women. Sibutramine may, therefore, impact weight loss through energy intake and not energy expenditure mechanisms.  相似文献

Consumption is the basis of metabolic and trophic ecology and is used to assess an animal''s trophic impact. The contribution of activity to an animal''s energy budget is an important parameter when estimating consumption, yet activity is usually measured in captive animals. Developments in telemetry have allowed the energetic costs of activity to be measured for wild animals; however, wild activity is seldom incorporated into estimates of consumption rates. We calculated the consumption rate of a free‐ranging marine predator (yellowtail kingfish, Seriola lalandi) by integrating the energetic cost of free‐ranging activity into a bioenergetics model. Accelerometry transmitters were used in conjunction with laboratory respirometry trials to estimate kingfish active metabolic rate in the wild. These field‐derived consumption rate estimates were compared with those estimated by two traditional bioenergetics methods. The first method derived routine swimming speed from fish morphology as an index of activity (a “morphometric” method), and the second considered activity as a fixed proportion of standard metabolic rate (a “physiological” method). The mean consumption rate for free‐ranging kingfish measured by accelerometry was 152 J·g−1·day−1, which lay between the estimates from the morphometric method (μ = 134 J·g−1·day−1) and the physiological method (μ = 181 J·g−1·day−1). Incorporating field‐derived activity values resulted in the smallest variance in log‐normally distributed consumption rates (σ = 0.31), compared with the morphometric (σ = 0.57) and physiological (σ = 0.78) methods. Incorporating field‐derived activity into bioenergetics models probably provided more realistic estimates of consumption rate compared with the traditional methods, which may further our understanding of trophic interactions that underpin ecosystem‐based fisheries management. The general methods used to estimate active metabolic rates of free‐ranging fish could be extended to examine ecological energetics and trophic interactions across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献

目的:探讨高强度间隙训练(HIIT)对大学生健康体适能、能量消耗和心率的影响。方法:以18~19岁男性大学生108人为研究对象,平均配对分为2组,一组为对照组,参加正常体育课;一组为试验组,在正常体育课上进行1次HIIT,课外进行2次HIIT,包含原地高抬腿、开合跳、弓步跳、立卧撑、原地深蹲、平板支撑、俄罗斯转体、俯卧背肌8个动作,每次8~10 min,共持续12周,对试验前后两组大学生的身体成分、能量消耗、肌肉力量、心肺适能和心率进行了测试。结果:与对照组相比,试验组学生心肺适能、肌肉适能、能量消耗均有所提高,其中立定跳远、静息能量消耗、总能量消耗、最大心率以及安静时心率显著升高(P< 0.05)。与试验前比较,试验组立定跳远、肺活量和中长跑成绩显著高于试验前(P<0.05);试验组身体成分改善,BMI下降;静息心率降低。结论:HIIT是一种高效、安全的运动方式,花费时间少,能有效增加能量消耗,提高肌肉和心肺适能,增加最大心率和安静时心率。  相似文献

[Purpose]

Heart Rate Recovery (HRR) after maximum exercise is a reactivation function of vagus nerve and an independent risk factor that predicts cardiovascular disease and mortality. Weight loss obtained through dietary programs has been employed as a therapy to reduce risks of cardiovascular disease and obesity.

[Methods]

Eighteen subjects of middle aged obese men (age 44.8 ± 1.6 yrs, BMI 29.7 ± 0.5 kg/m2) were selected for this study. As a weight loss direction, the nutritional direction of low-calorie diet mainly consisted of carbohydrate, protein, and fat has been conducted for 3 months. Blood pressure was measured after overnight fasting, and blood samples were collected from the antecubital vein before and after weight loss program. All the pre- and post-exercise ‘HRR decay constant’s were assessed by using values of HRR (heart recovery rate; 2 minutes) and HR measured after reached to the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) exploited the bicycle ergometer.

[Results]

After the completion of weight loss program, body weight and BMI were significantly decreased, but the Heart Rate (HR) after maximum exercise and in steady state were not changed significantly (p > 0.05). The post-exercise HRR after the weight loss did not show significant changes in perspectives of 30 seconds (-16.6 ± 2.3 to -20.2 ± 2.1 beats/min, p > 0.05) and 60 seconds (-33.5 ± 3.4 to -34.6 ± 2.8 beats/min, p > 0.05) respectively but in perspectives of 90 seconds (-40.9 ± 2.6 to -48.1 ± 3.1 beats/min, p < 0.05) and 120 seconds (-48.6 ± 2.6 to -54.3 ± 3.5 beats/min, p < 0.05), they were decreased significantly. Pre-’HRR decay constant’s of 0.294 ± 0.02 %/second were significantly increased to post-values of 0.342 ± 0.03 %/second (p = 0.026). Changes in ‘HRR decay constant’ were significantly correlated with changes in blood glucose (r = -0.471, p < 0.05) and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max, r = 0.505, p < 0.05) respectively.

[Conclusions]

The low-calorie diet directed to obese middle aged men for 3 months significantly improved the HRR after maximum exercise, and this improvement in cardiovascular autonomic nerve system was estimated to be involved with improvements in blood glucose and maximal oxygen consumption.  相似文献

We studied the rate of oxygen consumption by the Lymnaea stagnalis embryos. The rate of oxygen consumption increased consistently during embryogenesis. The volume specific rate of oxygen consumption increased initially from the early cleavage stages until the gastrula stage and then decreased gradually to the eclosion of snails. There are three periods in embryogenesis of L. stagnalis, which differ in the coefficients of allometric dependence between the rate of oxygen consumption and volume of embryos: (1) early embryogenesis, when the increase in the rate of oxygen consumption is not accompanied by the growth of volume of the embryos; (2) larval period (trochophore and veliger stages; exponential coefficient k = 0.514), and (3) postlarval period (exponential coefficient k = 0.206).  相似文献

The number of physical activity measures and indexes used in the human literature is large and may result in some difficulty for the average investigator to choose the most appropriate measure. Accordingly, this review is intended to provide information on the utility and limitations of the various measures. Its primary focus is the objective assessment of free‐living physical activity in humans based on physiological and biomechanical methods. The physical activity measures have been classified into three categories:
  • 1 . Measures based on energy expenditure or oxygen uptake, such as activity energy expenditure, activity‐related time equivalent, physical activity level, physical activity ratio, metabolic equivalent, and a new index of potential interest, daytime physical activity level.
  • 2 . Measures based on heart rate monitoring, such as net heart rate, physical activity ratio heart rate, physical activity level heart rate, activity‐related time equivalent, and daytime physical activity level heart rate.
  • 3 . Measures based on whole‐body accelerometry (counts/U time).
Quantification of the velocity and duration of displacement in outdoor conditions by satellites using the Differential Global Positioning System may constitute a surrogate for physical activity, because walking is the primary activity of man in free‐living conditions. A general outline of the measures and indexes described above is presented in tabular form, along with their respective definition, usual applications, advantages, and shortcomings. A practical example is given with typical values in obese and non‐obese subjects. The various factors to be considered in the selection of physical activity methods include experimental goals, sample size, budget, cultural and social/environmental factors, physical burden for the subject, and statistical factors, such as accuracy and precision. It is concluded that no single current technique is able to quantify all aspects of physical activity under free‐living conditions, requiring the use of complementary methods. In the future, physical activity sensors, which are of low‐cost, small‐sized, and convenient for subjects, investigators, and clinicians, are needed to reliably monitor, during extended periods in free‐living situations, small changes in movements and grade as well as duration and intensity of typical physical activities.  相似文献

Doubly labeled water (DLW) is an accurate, portable method for measuring free-living energy expenditure. However, under certain conditions shifts in baseline abundance of deuterium and oxygen-18 tracers used in the method may produce errors in derivation of both turnover (k) rates and calculated energy expenditure. Present objectives were to examine during what experimental situations baseline errors arise and to address means of correcting for such baseline shifts so that consequent errors in energy expenditure calculations are minimized. Under conditions where shifts in baseline abundance for deuterium and oxygen-18 parallel abundances corresponding to the natural meteoric water ratio, self-compensating changes in k values for both deuterium and oxygen will result in minimal error to the DLW energy expenditure calculations, provided that the dose ratio of isotopes also mimics the meteoric water line. However, in situations where relative shifts in abundance of each isotope across the measurement period are not in parallel relative to the natural meteoric water line, then the potential for larger DLW errors exists. Optimally, subjects should equilibrate with the new water source. Failing this, correction for shifting baseline can be accomplished by measuring isotopic abundance changes in a control group of subjects not given the DLW dose, but performing similar tasks and consuming the same diet as the group given DLW. Alternatively, theoretically based correction values can be calculated given knowledge of the abundances of the final drinking water and the interval time that subjects consumed the new fluid.  相似文献

Southern catfish juvenile (37.6-65.9 g) were fasted for two weeks and fed with cutlets of freshly killed loach species at 2% body mass per meal twice daily (06:00 and 18:00) for four days at 27.5°C. Metabolic rates were measured during the fasting and feeding periods and all metabolic rates were adjusted to a standard body mass of 1 kg using an exponent of 0.75. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fasting and repeat feeding on the resting metabolic rate and the feeding metabolic rate. The results demonstrated that the standardized value of the resting metabolic rate gradually decreased from 69.6 ± 2.7 (means ± S.E.) to 42.8 ± 2.3 mgO2 h-1 during the two weeks of fasting. The peak feeding metabolic rate and average metabolic rate of each feeding (12 h) gradually increased with repeat feeding before leveling off. The results of this study suggest that southern catfish can regulate digestive function and gradually alter the characteristics of metabolism according to the availability of a food resource.  相似文献

Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus were housed individually during 7 days in a continuous flow-trough respirometry system and daily exposed to one of three treatments: (1) a series of knocks on the side of the aquarium, (2) a series of photo-flashes and (3) control group. Exposure to photo-flashes did not change locomotor activity but decreased both night-time and daytime oxygen consumption throughout the experiment. Knocking induced a short-lived increase in locomotor activity and tended to increase oxygen consumption, but this latter effect was not significant. Night-time oxygen consumption was not affected by knocking exposure. Cortisol levels assayed from fish-holding water collected at the end of the experiment were significantly lower in subjects exposed to photo-flashes than in subjects exposed to knocks or controls. Males did not respond differently than females to the treatments in any of the measurements taken. In summary, the data reported here suggest that exposure to repetitive photo-flashes, but not knocking, suppressed normal energy metabolism and cortisol levels. These effects were present hours to a half day after exposure to the flashes.  相似文献

The rates of metabolism in animals vary tremendously throughout the biosphere. The origins of this variation are a matter of active debate with some scientists highlighting the importance of anatomical or environmental constraints, while others emphasize the diversity of ecological roles that organisms play and the associated energy demands. Here, we analyse metabolic rates in diverse marine taxa, with special emphasis on patterns of metabolic rate across a depth gradient, in an effort to understand the extent and underlying causes of variation. The conclusion from this analysis is that low rates of metabolism, in the deep sea and elsewhere, do not result from resource (e.g. food or oxygen) limitation or from temperature or pressure constraint. While metabolic rates do decline strongly with depth in several important animal groups, for others metabolism in abyssal species proceeds as fast as in ecologically similar shallow-water species at equivalent temperatures. Rather, high metabolic demand follows strong selection for locomotory capacity among visual predators inhabiting well-lit oceanic waters. Relaxation of this selection where visual predation is limited provides an opportunity for reduced energy expenditure. Large-scale metabolic variation in the ocean results from interspecific differences in ecological energy demand.  相似文献

This study tests whether or not post-exercise oxygen consumption rates ( M o2) in fish are dependent upon how exhaustion is induced. A group of eight Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) were each exercised using (1) a critical swimming speed ( U crit) protocol, (2) an exercise protocol designed to measure anaerobic capacity of fish ( U burst), and (3) a protocol in which the fish were chased to exhaustion manually. M o2 was measured for a 2-h period following exhaustion induced by all three exercise regimes ( U crit, U burst and chase). Post-exercise M o2 following exhaustion from the U burst and chase protocols were significantly higher than post-exercise M o2 following the U crit protocol. Each fish during the U crit protocol exhibited maximal M o2 during exercise rather than during recovery, yet 75% of the fish during U brust recovery and 100% during chase recovery exhibited M o2 higher than that measured during U crit exercise. These results, as well as the large interindividual variations in M o2 among the eight fish, show that post-exhaustion M o2 is specific to the exercise regime employed, thus, investigators must exercise caution when combining results from different exercise protocols and/or individuals.  相似文献

Telemetered heart rate (fH) was examined as an indicator of activity and oxygen consumption rate (VO2) in adult, cultivated, Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. Heart rate was measured during sustained swimming in a flume for six fish at 10° C [mean weight, 1114 g; mean fork length (f. l.), 50·6 cm] and seven fish at 15° C (mean weight, 1119 g; mean f. l., 50·7 cm) at speeds of up to 2·2 body lengths/s. Semi–logarithmic relationships between heart rate and swimming speed were obtained at both temperatures. Spontaneously swimming fish in still water exhibited characteristic heart rate increases associated with activity. Heart rate and Vo2 were monitored simultaneously in a 575–1 circular respirometer for six fish (three male, three female) at 4° C (mean weight, 1804 g; mean F. L., 62· cm) and six fish (three male, three female) at 10° C (mean weight, 2045 g; mean f. l., 63·2 cm) during spontaneous but unquantified activity. Linear regressions were obtained by transforming data for both fH and Vo2 to log values. At each temperature, slopes of the regressions between fH and Vo2 for individual fishes were not significantly different, but in some cases elevations were. All differences in elevation were between male and female fish. There were no significant differences in regression slope or elevation for fish of the same sex at the two temperatures and so regressions were calculated for the sexes, pooling data from 4 and 10° C. There was no significant difference in the mean ± S. D. Vo2 between the sexes at 4° C (male, 66·0 ± 59·6 mgO2 kg?1 h?1; female, 88·0 ± 60·1 mgO2 kg?1 h?1) or 10° C (male, 166·2 ± 115·4 mgO2 kg?1 h?1; female, 169·2 ± 111–1 mgO2 kg?1h?1). Resting Vo2 (x?± s. d.) at 4°C was 36·7 ± 8.4 mgO2 kg?1 h?1, and 10° C was 72·8 ± 11·9 mgO2 kg?1 h?1. Maximum Vo2 (x?± S. D.) at 4° C was 250·6 ± 40·2 mgO2 kg?1 h?1, and at 10° C was 423·6 ± 25·2 mgO2 kg?1 h?1. Heart rate appears to be a useful indicator of metabolic rate over the temperature range examined, for the cultivated fish studied, but it is possible that the relationship for wild fish may differ.  相似文献
