Two‐dimensional (2D) nanomaterials (i.e., graphene and its derivatives, transition metal oxides and transition metal dichalcogenides) are receiving a lot attention in energy storage application because of their unprecedented properties and great diversities. However, their re‐stacking or aggregation during the electrode fabrication process has greatly hindered their further developments and applications in rechargeable lithium batteries. Recently, rationally designed hierarchical structures based on 2D nanomaterials have emerged as promising candidates in rechargeable lithium battery applications. Numerous synthetic strategies have been developed to obtain hierarchical structures and high‐performance energy storage devices based on these hierarchical structure have been realized. This review summarizes the synthesis and characteristics of three styles of hierarchical architecture, namely three‐dimensional (3D) porous network nanostructures, hollow nanostructures and self‐supported nanoarrays, presents the representative applications of hierarchical structured nanomaterials as functional materials for lithium ion batteries, lithium‐sulfur batteries and lithium‐oxygen batteries, meanwhile sheds light particularly on the relationship between structure engineering and improved electrochemical performance; and provides the existing challenges and the perspectives for this fast emerging field.  相似文献

Structural/compositional characteristics at the anode/electrolyte interface are of paramount importance for the practical performance of lithium ion batteries, including cyclic stability, rate capacity, and operational safety. The anode‐electrolyte interface with traditional separator technology is featured with inevitable phase discontinuity and fails to support the stable operation of lithium ion batteries based on large‐capacity anodes with structural change in charges/discharges, such as transition metal oxide anodes. In this work, an anode/electrolyte framework based on an oxide anode and an active‐oxide‐incorporated separator is proposed for the first time and investigated for lithium ion batteries. The architecture builds a robust anode‐separator interface in LIBs, shortens Li+ diffusion path, accelerates electron transport, and mitigates the volume change of the oxide anode in electrochemical reactions. Remarkably, 4 wt% CuO addition in the separator leads to a 17% enhancement in the overall capacity of a battery with a CuO anode. The battery delivers an unparalleled record reversible capacity of 637.2 mAh g?1 with a 99% capacity retention after 100 charge/discharge cycles at 0.5 C. The high performance are attributed to the robust anode‐separator interface, which gives rise to enhanced interaction between the oxide anode and the same‐oxide‐incorporated composite in the separator.  相似文献

Since their commercialization by Sony in 1991, graphite anodes in combination with various cathodes have enabled the widespread success of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), providing over 10 billion rechargeable batteries to the global population. Next‐generation nonaqueous alkali metal‐ion batteries, namely sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs), are projected to utilize intercalation‐based carbon anodes as well, due to their favorable electrochemical properties. While traditionally graphite anodes have dominated the market share of LIBs, other carbon materials have been investigated, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, and disordered carbons. The relationship between carbon material properties, electrochemical performance, and charge storage mechanisms is clarified for these alkali metal‐ion batteries, elucidating possible strategies for obtaining enhanced cycling stability, specific capacity, rate capability, and safety aspects. As a key component in determining cell performance, the solid electrolyte interphase layer is described in detail, particularly for its dependence on the carbon anode. Finally, battery safety at extreme temperatures is discussed, where carbon anodes are susceptible to dendrite formation, accelerated aging, and eventual thermal runaway. As society pushes toward higher energy density LIBs, this review aims to provide guidance toward the development of sustainable next‐generation SIBs and PIBs.  相似文献

Rechargeable magnesium ion batteries are interesting as one of the alternative metal ion battery systems to lithium ion batteries due to the wide availability and accessibility of magnesium in the earth's crust. On the one hand, electrolyte solutions in which Mg metal anodes are fully reversible are not suitable for the use of high voltage/high capacity transition metal oxide cathodes due to complex surface phenomena. On the other hand, Mg metal anodes cannot work reversibly in conventional electrolyte solutions in which high voltage/high capacity Mg insertion cathodes can work because of passivation phenomena that fully block them. Replacing Mg metal with alternative anodes that can work reversibly in conventional electrolyte solutions could provide a promising route to elaborate high voltage and high capacity rechargeable Mg battery systems. Herein, the recent progress in alloy anodes based on group IIIA, IVA, VA elements is summarized. The theoretical evaluations, achievable capacities, synthetic strategies, battery test configurations, electrochemical properties, and underlying reaction mechanisms are systematically summarized and discussed. The key issues and challenges impeding their current use are identified and some valuable suggestions for their future development as practical reversible anodes for Mg batteries are provided.  相似文献

The increasing demand for replacing conventional fossil fuels with clean energy or economical and sustainable energy storage drives better battery research today. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as a promising alternative for grid‐scale storage applications due to their similar “rocking‐chair” sodium storage mechanism to lithium‐ion batteries, the natural abundance, and the low cost of Na resources. Searching for appropriate electrode materials with acceptable electrochemical performance is the key point for development of SIBs. Layered transition metal oxides represent one of the most fascinating electrode materials owing to their superior specific capacity, environmental benignity, and facile synthesis. However, three major challenges (irreversible phase transition, storage instability, and insufficient battery performance) are known for cathodes in SIBs. Herein, a comprehensive review on the latest advances and progresses in the exploration of layered oxides for SIBs is presented, and a detailed and deep understanding of the relationship of phase transition, air stability, and electrochemical performance in layered oxide cathodes is provided in terms of refining the structure–function–property relationship to design improved battery materials. Layered oxides will be a competitive and attractive choice as cathodes for SIBs in next‐generation energy storage devices.  相似文献

Electrochemical metal‐ion intercalation systems are acknowledged to be a critical energy storage technology. The kinetics of the intercalation processes in transition‐metal based oxides determine the practical characteristics of metal‐ion batteries, such as the energy density, power, and cyclability. With the emergence of post lithium‐ion batteries, such as sodium‐ion and potassium‐ion batteries, which function predominately in nonaqueous electrolytes of special formulation and exhibit quite varied material stability with regard to their surface chemistries and reactivity with electrolytes, the practical routes for the optimization of metal‐ion battery performance become essential. Electrochemical methods offer a variety of means to quantitatively study the diffusional, charge transfer, and phase transformation rates in complex systems, which are, however, rather rarely fully adopted by the metal‐ion battery community, which slows down the progress in rationalizing the rate‐controlling factors in complex intercalation systems. Herein, several practical approaches for diagnosing the origin of the rate limitations in intercalation materials based on phenomenological models are summarized, focusing on the specifics of charge transfer, diffusion, and nucleation phenomena in redox‐active solid electrodes. It is demonstrated that information regarding rate‐determining factors can be deduced from relatively simple analysis of experimental methods including cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and impedance spectroscopy.  相似文献

Resources used in lithium‐ion batteries are becoming more expensive due to their high demand, and the global cobalt market heavily depends on supplies from countries with high geopolitical risks. Alternative battery technologies including magnesium‐ion batteries are therefore desirable. Progress toward practical magnesium‐ion batteries are impeded by an absence of suitable anodes that can operate with conventional electrolyte solvents. Although alloy‐type magnesium‐ion battery anodes are compatible with common electrolyte solvents, they suffer from severe failure associated with huge volume changes during cycling. Consequently, achieving more than 200 cycles in alloy‐type magnesium‐ion battery anodes remains a challenge. Here an unprecedented long‐cycle life of 1000 cycles, achieved at a relatively high (dis)charge rate of 3 C (current density: 922.5 mA g?1) in Mg2Ga5 alloy‐type anode, taking advantage of near‐room‐temperatures solid–liquid phase transformation between Mg2Ga5 (solid) and Ga (liquid), is demonstrated. This concept should open the way to the development of practical anodes for next‐generation magnesium‐ion batteries.  相似文献

Developing high‐performance batteries through applying renewable resources is of great significance for meeting ever‐growing energy demands and sustainability requirements. Biomaterials have overwhelming advantages in material abundance, environmental benignity, low cost, and more importantly, multifunctionalities from structural and compositional diversity. Therefore, significant and fruitful research on exploiting various natural biomaterials (e.g., soy protein, chitosan, cellulose, fungus, etc.) for boosting high‐energy lithium‐based batteries by means of making or modifying critical battery components (e.g., electrode, electrolyte, and separator) are reported. In this review, the recent advances and main strategies for adopting biomaterials in electrode, electrolyte, and separator engineering for high‐energy lithium‐based batteries are comprehensively summarized. The contributions of biomaterials to stabilizing electrodes, capturing electrochemical intermediates, and protecting lithium metal anodes/enhancing battery safety are specifically emphasized. Furthermore, advantages and challenges of various strategies for fabricating battery materials via biomaterials are described. Finally, future perspectives and possible solutions for further development of biomaterials for high‐energy lithium‐based batteries are proposed.  相似文献

The exploration of new and efficient energy storage mechanisms through nanostructured electrode design is crucial for the development of high‐performance rechargeable batteries. Herein, black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) and Ti3C2 nanosheets (TNSs) are employed as battery and pseudocapacitive components, respectively, to construct BPQD/TNS composite anodes with a novel battery‐capacitive dual‐model energy storage (DMES) mechanism for lithium‐ion and sodium‐ion batteries. Specifically, as a battery‐type component, BPQDs anchored on the TNSs are endowed with improved conductivity and relieved stress upon cycling, enabling a high‐capacity and stable energy storage. Meanwhile, the pseudocapacitive TNS component with further atomic charge polarization induced by P? O? Ti interfacial bonds between the two components allows enhanced charge adsorption and efficient interfacial electron transfer, contributing a higher pseudocapacitive value and fast energy storage. The DMES mechanism is evidenced by substantial characterizations of X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X‐ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and kinetics analyses. Consequently, the composite electrode exhibits superior battery performance, especially for lithium storage, such as high capacity (910 mAh g?1 at 100 mA g?1), long cycling stability (2400 cycles with a capacity retention over 100%), and high rate capability, representing the best comprehensive battery performance in BP‐based anodes to date.  相似文献

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) spontaneously formed on anode surfaces as a passivation layer plays a critical role in the lithium dissolution and deposition upon discharge/charge in lithium ion batteries and lithium‐metal batteries. The formation kinetics and failure of the SEI films are the key factors determining the safety, power capability, and cycle life of lithium ion and lithium‐metal batteries. Since SEI films evolve with the volumetric and interfacial changes of anodes, it is technically challenging in experimental study of SEI kinetics. Here operando observations are reported of SEI formation, growth, and failure at a high current density by utilizing a mass‐sensitive Cs‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The sub‐nano‐scale observations reveal a bilayer hybrid structure of SEI films and demonstrate the radical assisted SEI growth after the SEI thickness beyond the electron tunneling regime. The failure of SEI films is associated with rapid dissolution of inorganic layers when they directly contact with the electrolyte in broken SEI films. The initiation of cracks in SEI films is caused by heterogeneous volume changes of the electrodes during delithiation. These microscopic insights have important implications in understanding SEI kinetics and in developing high‐performance anodes with the formation of robust SEI films.  相似文献

Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) with outstanding energy and power density have been extensively investigated in recent years, rendering them the most suitable energy storage technology for application in emerging markets such as electric vehicles and stationary storage. More recently, sodium, one of the most abundant elements on earth, exhibiting similar physicochemical properties as lithium, has been gaining increasing attention for the development of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) in order to address the concern about Li availability and cost—especially with regard to stationary applications for which size and volume of the battery are of less importance. Compared with traditional intercalation reactions, conversion reaction‐based transition metal oxides (TMOs) are prospective anode materials for rechargeable batteries thanks to their low cost and high gravimetric specific capacities. In this review, the recent progress and remaining challenges of conversion reactions for LIBs and SIBs are discussed, covering an overview about the different synthesis methods, morphological characteristics, as well as their electrochemical performance. Potential future research directions and a perspective toward the practical application of TMOs for electrochemical energy storage are also provided.  相似文献

The combined effect of lithium‐ion diffusion, potential‐concentration gradient, and stress plays a critical role in the rate capability and cycle life of Si‐based anodes of lithium‐ion batteries. In this work, Si nanofilm anodes are shown to exhibit an asymmetric rate performance: around 72% of the total available capacity can be delivered during de‐lithiation under a high current density of 420 A g‐1 (100C where C is the charge‐rate) in 22 s; in striking contrast, only 1% capacity can be delivered during lithiation. A mathematical model of single‐ion diffusion is established to elucidate the asymmetric rate performance, which can be mainly attributed to the potential‐concentration profile associated with the active material and the ohmic voltage shift under high currents; the difference in chemical diffusion coefficients during lithiation and de‐lithiation also plays a role. This clarifies that the charge and discharge rates of lithium‐ion‐battery electrodes should be evaluated separately due to the asymmetric effect in the electrochemical system.  相似文献

Despite the wide application of lithium‐ion batteries in portable electronic devices and electric vehicles, the demand for new battery systems with the merits of high voltage, environmental friendliness, safety, and cost efficiency is still quite urgent. This perspective focuses on dual‐ion batteries (DIBs), in which, both the cations and anions are involved in the battery reaction. An anion's intercalation/deintercalation process on the cathode side allows the DIBs to operate at high voltages, which is favorable for enhanced energy density. However, electrolytes with a wide electrochemical window and suitable anion‐intercalation materials with highly reversible capacities should be developed. The progress of research into stable organic electrolytes, ionic liquids, and their effects on the electrochemical performances of DIBs are first discussed. Thereafter, the anion‐host materials including graphitic materials, organic materials, and their working mechanisms are discussed in detail. In addition, recently emerging DIB systems with high‐capacity anodes, or sodium‐, potassium‐ion involved battery reactions are also reviewed. The authors' recent work, demonstrating a generalized DIB construction using metal foil as both current collector and alloying anode material, which is successfully extended into lithium‐, sodium‐, and potassium‐based DIBs, is also discussed.  相似文献

Interfacial chemistry between lithium metal anodes and electrolytes plays a vital role in regulating the Li plating/stripping behavior and improving the cycling performance of Li metal batteries. Constructing a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li metal anodes is now understood to be a requirement for progress in achieving feasible Li‐metal batteries. Recently, the application of novel analytical tools has led to a clearer understanding of composition and the fine structure of the SEI. This further promoted the development of interface engineering for stable Li metal anodes. In this review, the SEI formation mechanism, conceptual models, and the nature of the SEI are briefly summarized. Recent progress in probing the atomic structure of the SEI and elucidating the fundamental effect of interfacial stability on battery performance are emphasized. Multiple factors including current density, mechanical strength, operating temperature, and structure/composition homogeneity that affect the interfacial properties are comprehensively discussed. Moreover, strategies for designing stable Li‐metal/electrolyte interfaces are also reviewed. Finally, new insights and future directions associated with Li‐metal anode interfaces are proposed to inspire more revolutionary solutions toward commercialization of Li metal batteries.  相似文献

Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have the potential to be practically applied in large‐scale energy storage markets. The rapid progress of SIBs research is primarily focused on electrodes, while electrolytes attract less attention. Indeed, the improvement of electrode performance is arguably correlated with the electrolyte optimization. In conventional lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), ether‐based electrolytes are historically less practical owing to the insufficient passivation of both anodes and cathodes. As an important class of aprotic electrolytes, ethers have revived with the emerging lithium‐sulfur and lithium‐oxygen batteries in recent years, and are even booming in the wave of SIBs. Ether‐based electrolytes are unique to enabling these new battery chemistries in terms of producing stable ternary graphite intercalation compounds, modifying anode solid electrolyte interphases, reducing the solubility of intermediates, and decreasing polarization. Better still, ether‐based electrolytes are compatible with specific inorganic cathodes and could catalyze the assembly of full SIBs prototypes. This Research News article aims to summarize the recent critical reports on ether‐based electrolytes in sodium‐based batteries, to unveil the uniqueness of ether‐based electrolytes to advancing diverse electrode materials, and to shed light on the viability and challenges of ether‐based electrolytes in future sodium‐based battery chemistries.  相似文献

Solid‐state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) may become one of the high‐energy density storage devices for the next generation of electric vehicles. High safety and energy density can be achieved by utilizing solid electrolytes and Li metal anodes. Therefore, developing cathode materials which can match with Li metal anode efficiently is indispensable. In SSLMBs, Li metal anodes can afford the majority of active lithium ions, then lithium‐depleted cathode materials can be a competitive candidate to achieve high gravimetric energy density as well as save lithium resources. Li0.33MnO2 lithium‐depleted material is chosen, which also has the advantages of low synthesis temperature and low cost (cobalt‐free). Notably, solid‐state electrolyte can greatly alleviate the problem of manganese dissolution in the electrolyte, which is beneficial to improve the cycling stability of the battery. Thus, SSLMBs enable practical applications of lithium‐depleted cathode materials.  相似文献

Transition metal sulfides, as an important class of inorganics, can be used as excellent electrode materials for various types of electrochemical energy storage, such as lithium‐ion batteries, sodium‐ion batteries, supercapacitors, and others. Recent works have identified that mixing graphene or graphene derivatives with transition metal sulfides can result in novel composites with better electrochemical performance. This review summarizes the latest advances in transition metal sulfide composites with graphene or graphene derivatives. The synthetic strategies and morphologies of these composites are introduced. The authors then discuss their applications in lithium‐ion batteries, sodium‐ion batteries, and supercapacitors. Finally, the authors give their personal viewpoints about the challenges and opportunities for the future development about this direction.  相似文献

The electrochemical performance of mesoporous carbon (C)/tin (Sn) anodes in Na‐ion and Li‐ion batteries is systematically investigated. The mesoporous C/Sn anodes in a Na‐ion battery shows similar cycling stability but lower capacity and poorer rate capability than that in a Li‐ion battery. The desodiation potentials of Sn anodes are approximately 0.21 V lower than delithiation potentials. The low capacity and poor rate capability of C/Sn anode in Na‐ion batteries is mainly due to the large Na‐ion size, resulting in slow Na‐ion diffusion and large volume change of porous C/Sn composite anode during alloy/dealloy reactions. Understanding of the reaction mechanism between Sn and Na ions will provide insight towards exploring and designing new alloy‐based anode materials for Na‐ion batteries.  相似文献

Lithium metal anodes are highly promising for next‐generation rechargeable batteries. However, implication of lithium metal anodes is hampered by the unstable electrochemical behavior. Herein, the fabrication of hermetic coatings of hybrid silicate on lithium metal surface using a simple vapor deposition technique under the ambient condition is reported. Such coatings consist of a “hard” inorganic moiety that helps to suppress lithium dendrites and a “soft” organic moiety that enhances the toughness. Lithium metal batteries, including Li–LiFePO4 and Li–S batteries, made with such coated anodes show significantly improved lifetime. This work provides a simple yet effective approach to stabilize lithium metal anodes for high‐performance lithium metal batteries.  相似文献

Lithium metal is the most attractive anode material due to its extremely high specific capacity, minimum potential, and low density. However, uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrite results in severe safety and cycling stability concerns, which hinders the application in next generation secondary batteries. In this paper, a new and facile method imposing a magnetic field to lithium metal anodes is proposed. That is, the lithium ions suffering Lorentz force due to the electromagnetic fields are put into spiral motion causing magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) effect. This MHD effect can effectively promote mass transfer and uniform distribution of lithium ions to suppress the dendrite growth as well as obtain uniform and compact lithium deposition. The results show that the lithium metal electrodes within the magnetic field exhibit excellent cycling and rate performance in a symmetrical battery. Additionally, full batteries using limited lithium metal as anodes and commercial LiFePO4 as cathodes show improved performance within the magnetic field. In summary, a new and facile strategy of suppressing lithium dendrites using the MHD effect by imposing a magnetic field is proposed, which may be generalized to other advanced alkali metal batteries.  相似文献
