Solution‐based semiconductors give rise to the next generation of thin‐film electronics. Solution‐based silicon as a starting material is of particular interest because of its favorable properties, which are already vastly used in conventional electronics. Here, the application of a silicon precursor based on neopentasilane for the preparation of thin‐film solar cells is reported for the first time, and, for the first time, a performance similar to conventional fabrication methods is demonstrated. Because three different functional layers, n‐type contact layer, intrinsic absorber, and p‐type contact layer, have to be stacked on top of each other, such a device is a very demanding benchmark test of performance of solution‐based semiconductors. Complete amorphous silicon n‐i‐p solar cells with an efficiency of 3.5% are demonstrated, which significantly exceeds previously reported values.  相似文献

Multijunction (MJ) solar cells have the potential to operate across the entire solar spectrum, for ultrahigh efficiencies in light to electricity conversion. Here an MJ cell architecture is presented that offers enhanced capabilities in photon recycling and photon extraction, compared to those of conventional devices. Ideally, each layer of a MJ cell should recycle and re‐emit its own luminescence to achieve the maximum possible voltage. This design involves materials with low refractive indices as interfaces between sub‐cells in the MJ structure. Experiments demonstrate that thin‐film GaAs devices printed on low‐index substrates exhibit improved photon recycling, leading to increased open‐circuit voltages (V oc), consistent with theoretical predictions. Additional systematic studies reveal important considerations in the thermal behavior of these structures under highly concentrated illumination. Particularly when combined with other optical elements such as anti‐reflective coatings, these architectures represent important aspects of design for solar cells that approach thermodynamic efficiency limits for full spectrum operation.  相似文献

An optimal photon absorption in thin film photovoltaic technologies can only be reached by effectively trapping the light in the absorber layer provided a considerable portion of the photons is rejected or scattered out of such layer. Here, a new optical cavity is proposed that can be made to have a resonant character at two different nonharmonic frequencies when adjusting the materials or geometry configurations of the partially transmitting cavity layers. Specific configurations are found where a reminiscence of such two fundamental resonances coexists leading to a broadband light trapping. When a PTB7‐Th:PC71BM organic cell is integrated within such cavity, a power conversion efficiency of 11.1% is measured. This study also demonstrates that when materials alternative to organics are used in the photoactive cell layer, a similar cavity can be implemented to also obtain the largest light absorption possible. Indeed, when it is applied to perovskite cells, an external quantum efficiency is predicted that closely matches its corresponding internal one for a broad wavelength range.  相似文献

The design and performance of solar cells based on InP grown by the nonepitaxial thin‐film vapor–liquid–solid (TF‐VLS) growth technique is investigated. The cell structure consists of a Mo back contact, p‐InP absorber layer, n‐TiO2 electron selective contact, and indium tin oxide transparent top electrode. An ex situ p‐doping process for TF‐VLS grown InP is introduced. Properties of the cells such as optoelectronic uniformity and electrical behavior of grain boundaries are examined. The power conversion efficiency of first generation cells reaches 12.1% under simulated 1 sun illumination with open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 692 mV, short‐circuit current (JSC) of 26.9 mA cm?2, and fill factor (FF) of 65%. The FF of the cell is limited by the series resistances in the device, including the top contact, which can be mitigated in the future through device optimization. The highest measured VOC under 1 sun is 692 mV, which approaches the optically implied VOC of ≈795 mV extracted from the luminescence yield of p‐InP.  相似文献

This study offers new insight into the role of Na in Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin film solar cells by studying samples with a spatially varying alkali distribution. This is achieved by omitting a diffusion barrier between the soda‐lime glass substrate and the Mo back contact, where compositional variations of the glass inherently result in non‐uniform alkali distributions in the CZTS. By correlating light beam induced current (LBIC) maps with secondary ion mass spectrometry composition maps, it is shown that samples containing regions of higher Na concentration (“hot spots”) have corresponding LBIC hot spots on comparable length scales. Samples containing an alkali diffusion barrier have lower LBIC dispersion; thus, LBIC can be used to evaluate non‐uniformity in CZTS devices, where a common cause is Na inhomogeneity. Moreover, it is shown that the Na hot spots are strongly correlated with other compositional variations in the device, including increased Cu in‐diffusion with the underlying MoS2 layer and decreased diffusion of Cd to the back contact. Neither of these effects are well understood in CZTS devices, and neither have previously been correlated with the presence or absence of Na.  相似文献

Quaternary semiconducting materials based on the kesterite (A2BCX4) mineral structure are the most promising candidates to overtake the current generation of light‐absorbing materials for thin‐film solar cells. Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) and their alloy Cu2ZnSn(Se,S)4 consist of abundant, low‐cost and non‐toxic elements, unlike current CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)Se2 based technologies. Zinc‐blende related structures are formed by quaternary compounds, but the complexity associated with the multi‐component system introduces difficulties in material growth, characterization, and application. First‐principles electronic structure simulations, performed over the past five years, that address the structural, electronic, and defect properties of this family of compounds are reviewed. Initial predictions of the bandgaps and crystal structures have recently been verified experimentally. The calculations highlight the role of atomic disorder on the cation sub‐lattice, as well as phase separation of Cu2ZnSnS4 into ZnS and CuSnS3, on the material performance for light‐to‐electricity conversion in photovoltaic devices. Finally, the current grand challenges for materials modeling of thin‐film solar cells are highlighted.  相似文献

Earth‐abundant Cu2BaSnS4 (CBTS) thin films exhibit a wide bandgap of 2.04–2.07 eV, a high absorption coefficient > 104 cm?1, and a p‐type conductivity, suitable as a top‐cell absorber in tandem solar cell devices. In this work, sputtered oxygenated CdS (CdS:O) buffer layers are demonstrated to create a good p–n diode with CBTS and enable high open‐circuit voltages of 0.9–1.1 V by minimizing interface recombination. The best power conversion efficiency of 2.03% is reached under AM 1.5G illumination based on the configuration of fluorine‐doped SnO2 (back contact)/CBTS/CdS:O/CdS/ZnO/aluminum‐doped ZnO (front contact).  相似文献

Kesterite‐type Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 has been extensively studied over the past several years, with researchers searching for promising candidates for indium‐ and gallium‐free inexpensive absorbers in high‐efficiency thin‐film solar cells. Many notable experimental and theoretical studies have dealt with the effects of intrinsic point defects, Cu/Zn/Sn nonstoichiometry, and cation impurities on cell performance. However, there have been few systematic investigations elucidating the distribution of oxygen at an atomic scale and the correlation between oxygen substitution and charge transport despite unavoidable incorporation of oxygen from the ambient atmosphere during thin‐film fabrication. Using energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy‐loss spectroscopy, the presence of nanoscale layers is directly demonstrated in which oxygen is substantially substituted for Se, near grain boundaries in polycrystalline Cu2ZnSnSe4 films. Density‐functional theory calculations also show that oxygen substitution remarkably lowers the valence band maximum and subsequently widens the overall bandgap. Consequently, anion modification by oxygen can make a major contribution to the formation of a robust barrier blocking the holes from bulk grains into grain boundaries, thereby efficiently attaining electron?hole separation. The findings provide crucial insights into achieving better energy conversion efficiency in kesterite‐based thin‐film solar cells through optimum control of oxidation during the fabrication process.  相似文献

Controllable fabrication of compositionally graded Gd0.1Ce0.9O2‐δ and Y0.16Zr0.84O2‐δ electrolytes using co‐sputtering is demonstrated. Self‐supported membranes were lithographically fabricated to employ the new electrolytes into thin film solid oxide fuel cells. Devices integrating such electrolytes demonstrate performance of over 1175 mW cm?2 and 665 mW cm?2 at 520 °C using hydrogen and methane as fuel, respectively. The results present a general strategy to fabricate nanoscale functionally graded materials with selective interfacial functionality for energy conversion.  相似文献

The stability of a perovskite solar cell (PSC) is enhanced significantly by applying a customized thin‐film encapsulation (TFE). The TFE is composed of a multilayer stack of organic/inorganic layers deposited by initiated chemical vapor deposition and atomic layer deposition, respectively, whose water vapor transmission rate is on the order of 10?4 g m?2 d?1 at an accelerated condition of 38 °C and 90% relative humidity (RH). The TFE is optimized, taking into consideration various aspects of thermosensitive PSCs. Lowering the process temperature is one of the most effective methods for minimizing the thermal damage to the PSC during the monolithic integration of the TFE onto PSC. The direct deposition of TFE onto a PSC causes less than 0.3% degradation (from 18.5% to 18.2%) in the power conversion efficiency, while the long‐term stability is substantially improved; the PSC retains 97% of its original efficiency after a 300 h exposure to an accelerated condition of 50 °C and 50% RH, confirming the enhanced stability of the PSC against moisture. This is the first demonstration of a TFE applied directly onto PSCs in a damage‐free manner, which will be a powerful tool for the development of highly stable PSCs with high efficiency.  相似文献

Polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells based on low bandgap polymer:fullerene blends are promising for next generation low‐cost photovoltaics. While these solution‐processed solar cells are compatible with large‐scale roll‐to‐roll processing, active layers used for typical laboratory‐scale devices are too thin to ensure high manufacturing yields. Furthermore, due to the limited light absorption and optical interference within the thin active layer, the external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells are severely limited. In order to produce polymer solar cells with high yields, efficient solar cells with a thick active layer must be demonstrated. In this work, the performance of thick‐film solar cells employing the low‐bandgap polymer poly(dithienogermole‐thienopyrrolodione) (PDTG‐TPD) was demonstrated. Power conversion efficiencies over 8.0% were obtained for devices with an active layer thickness of 200 nm, illustrating the potential of this polymer for large‐scale manufacturing. Although an average EQE > 65% was obtained for devices with active layer thicknesses > 200 nm, the cell performance could not be maintained due to a reduction in fill factor. By comparing our results for PDTG‐TPD solar cells with similar P3HT‐based devices, we investigated the loss mechanisms associated with the limited device performance observed for thick‐film low‐bandgap polymer solar cells.  相似文献

Energy generation and consumption have always been an important component of social development. Interests in this field are beginning to shift to indoor photovoltaics (IPV) which can serve as power sources under low light conditions to meet the energy needs of rapidly growing fields, such as intelligence gathering and information processing which usually operate via the Internet‐of‐things (IoT). Since the power requirements for this purpose continue to decrease, IPV systems under low light may facilitate the realization of self‐powered high‐tech electronic devices connected through the IoT. This review discusses and compares the characteristics of different types of IPV devices such as those based on silicon, dye, III‐V semiconductors, organic compounds, and halide perovskites. Among them, specific attention is paid to perovskite photovoltaics which may potentially become a high performing IPV system due to the fascinating photophysics of the halide perovskite active layer. The limitations of such indoor application as they relate to the toxicity, stability, and electronic structure of halide perovskites are also discussed. Finally, strategies which could produce highly functional, nontoxic, and stable perovskite photovoltaics devices for indoor applications are proposed.  相似文献

Organic solar cells (OSCs) containing non‐fullerene acceptors have realized high power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 14%. However, most of these high‐performance non‐fullerene OSCs have been reported with optimal active layer thickness of about 100 nm, mainly due to the low electron mobility (≈10?4–10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1) of non‐fullerene acceptors, which are not suitable for roll‐to‐roll large‐scale processing. In this work, an efficient non‐fullerene OSC based on poly[(5,6‐difluoro‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazol‐4,7‐diyl)‐alt‐(3,3′″‐di(2‐octyldodecyl)‐2,2′;5′,2″;5″,2′″‐quaterthiophen‐5,5′′′‐diyl)] (PffBT4T‐2OD):EH‐IDTBR (consists of electron‐rich indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene as the central unit and an electron‐deficient 5,6‐benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole unit flanked with rhodanine as the peripheral group) with thickness‐independent PCE (maintaining a PCE of 9.1% with an active layer thickness of 300 nm) is presented by optimizing device architectures to overcome the space‐charge effects. Optical modeling reveals that most of the incident light is absorbed near the transparent electrode side in thick‐film devices. The transport distance of electrons with lower mobility will therefore be shortened when using inverted device architecture, in which most of the excitons are generated close to the cathode side and therefore substantially reduces the accumulation of electrons in the device. As a result, an efficient thick‐film non‐fullerene OSC is realized. These results provide important guidelines for the development of more efficient thick‐film non‐fullerene OSCs.  相似文献
