The role of dopamine in the dysregulation of TSH secretion in uremic male rats was investigated using the dopamine antagonist, pimozide. In order to obviate the effect of weight loss due to uremia-induced anorexia as a cause of altered TSH secretion in uremia, we also studied a group of normal animals whose food intake was restricted and who demonstrated weight loss comparable to that of the uremic animals. Baseline TSH concentrations were not significantly different in the normal, uremic or starved animals. Pimozide administration produced no change in the baseline TSH concentrations in any of the groups of rats. The peak TSH response to TRH (5 micrograms IV) was significantly blunted in the uremic animals compared to the normal controls and the starved animals. Pimozide administration did not alter the peak TRH-stimulated TSH response in either the normal animals or the starved animals. However, the peak TRH-stimulated TSH response was significantly increased in the uremic animals and was comparable to the peak TSH response seen in the pimozide-untreated control animals. The data suggest that experimental renal failure in rats is associated with diminished sensitivity of the thyrotroph to TRH stimulation, and that this blunted sensitivity may be dopamine-dependent since it can be abolished by pharmacologic dopamine blockade.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Childhood neglect has severe, pervasive, negative outcomes that often continue into adulthood. As a potential source of support for both children and adults, companion animals (pets) can both give and receive affection and therefore may be sources of healthy attachment for people who were raised in negative situations. Toy stuffed animals, in contrast, can only receive affection but may still be useful as transitional objects, particularly for people who experienced interpersonal neglect in childhood and who are in the midst of a transition away from the family home and into college. The current study examined the relationships among childhood neglect, companion animal attachment, and attachment to toy stuffed animals. Undergraduate participants (n = 457) from a large regional university answered questionnaires online. The first hypothesis, that self-reported childhood neglect would be positively related to attachment to companion animals, was supported for women only. Neglected women were more attached to companion animals than were non-neglected women, with a medium effect size. For men, there was no significant effect. The second hypothesis was that childhood neglect would be positively related to attachment to stuffed animals; this hypothesis was not supported. The third hypothesis, that women would be more attached to both companion animals and stuffed animals than would men, was supported. Attachment to companion animals and attachment to stuffed animals were positively related. Results are discussed within a framework of attachment and transitional objects as potential aids to therapy in people who were neglected in childhood.  相似文献

Abstract

The presence of animals has been associated with decreased physiological responses to stressors. Not all individuals respond equally to the presence of friendly animals. The current study was designed to examine whether attitudes toward animals are related to individuals' physiological responses when an animal is present. The relationship of individuals' perceptions of animals to their blood pressure and heart rate responses during verbalization in the presence of a dog were examined among urban college students (n=218). Lockwood's projective Animal Thematic Apperception Test (ATAT) was used to assess subjects' attitudes toward animals and people in scenes containing animals and identical scenes without animals. The significant period by perception interactions in analyses of variance with repeated measures revealed that cardiovascular responses to verbalization with an animal present were significantly lower for individuals who perceived scenes with animals more positively than for individuals who perceived scenes with animals present less positively. Cardiovascular responses when the dog was present were not related to perceptions of scenes without animals present. The differences in cardiovascular responses depended upon the scenes used. This study supports the view that how people perceive animals moderates their physiological responses to stressors when an animal is present.  相似文献

Communication and behaviour of animals living ex situ has been one of the major sources of knowledge about wild animals. Nevertheless, it is also acknowledged that depending on the environment that the animals inhabit (or are kept in), there are differences in their communication and behaviour. With some species (especially large mammals) it is difficult to reproduce their natural environment to an extent that excludes deviations from the behaviour and communication exhibited by animals living in situ. In zoological gardens, welfare measures are introduced in order to counteract the effects of the captive environment and to grant an individual’s good physical and psychological well-being. The relation between good welfare and species-specific communication and behaviour is discussed, and as a result, a general model of ex situ animal communication and behaviour is proposed. The suggested model is inclusive of differences between captive animals and free-ranging animals and serves to explain the welfare-related reasons underlying individual animal’s deviations from species-specific behaviour and communication.  相似文献

Internal and external parasites remain a significant concern in laboratory rodent facilities, and many research facilities harbor some parasitized animals. Before embarking on an examination of animals for parasites, two things should be considered. One: what use will be made of the information collected, and two: which test is the most appropriate. Knowing that animals are parasitized may be something that the facility accepts, but there is often a need to treat animals and then to determine the efficacy of treatment. Parasites may be detected in animals through various techniques, including samples taken from live or euthanized animals. Historically, the tests with the greatest diagnostic sensitivity required euthanasia of the animal, although PCR has allowed high-sensitivity testing for several types of parasite. This article demonstrates procedures for the detection of endo- and ectoparasites in mice and rats. The same procedures are applicable to other rodents, although the species of parasites found will differ.  相似文献

Excretion with urine of tyrosine and methionine metabolites as well as the activities of enzymes involved in their metabolism are correlated with the state and type of melanin synthesized in the skin. The response of tyrosine aminotransferase to melaninogenesis induction was more pronounced in animals with predominant pheomelaninogenesis, especially after tyrosine load, while that to dopachrome oxidoreductase--in animals with predominant eumelaninogenesis and after methionine load. Glutathione reductase and cystathionine-beta-synthase responded more vigorously to methionine injections, which was especially well pronounced in animals with prominent pheomelaninogenesis and in albino animals. The metabolic "block" in melanine synthesis in albino animals seems to be observed after the 5-S-cysteinyl-DOPA synthesis, whereas the initial steps of melaninogenesis in these animals are identical to pheomelanine synthesis reactions.  相似文献

The performance of 22 adult male rhesus monkeys on a Fixed Interval 1-min reinforcement schedule was examined under conditions where the reinforcement probabilities were either 1.00 or .80. The results were then related to the social rank of animals at the time that they were taken from their social groups. Both high and low ranked animals reached criterion performance in the same number of trials. In general, high ranking animals responded at lower rates than low ranking animals when the reinforcement probability was 1.00. When the reinforcement probability was shifted to .80, all animals showed an increase in responding after nonreinforced intervals as compared with responses after reinforced intervals. Luteinizing hormone (LH) receptor knockout animals have an ovarian failure due to an arrest in folliculogenesis at the antral stage. As a result, the animals have an infertility phenotype. The present study was undertaken to determine whether this phenotype could be reversed by orthotopic transplantation of wild-type ovaries. The results revealed that transplanting wild-type ovaries into null animals did not result in resumption of estrus cycles. Although the number of different types of follicles increased, none progressed to ovulation. The serum hormone profiles improved, reflecting the ovarian changes. The wild-type animals with null ovaries also failed to cycle and their ovaries and serum hormone levels were more like null animals with their own ovaries. Although the lack of rescue of null ovaries placed into wild-type animals was predicted, the failure of wild-type ovaries placed in null animals was not, which could be due to chronic exposure of transplanted tissue to high circulating LH levels and also possibly due to altered internal milieu in null animals. These findings may have implications for potential future considerations of grafting normal donor ovaries into women who have an ovarian failure resulting from inactivating LH receptor mutations.  相似文献

The influence of estradiol and testosterone on body growth of young male Wistar rats was investigated. In the first experiment, estradiol was given to intact ad libitum fed male rats at 32, 37 and 42 days of age. Moreover, two untreated groups of animals were used: one was fed restrictedly according to the food intake of animals receiving estradiol and another was fed ad libitum. The animals were sacrificed at 47 days of age. Both untreated groups of animals achieved significantly higher body weight and length of tibia than estradiol treated animals. Also the growth of the tail of untreated animals was more intensive than that of estradiol treated animals. In the second experiment, estradiol was given to intact ad libitum fed male rats at 30, 35 and 45 days of age. Moreover, testosterone was given to a half of these animals at 45, 50 and 55 days of age. The animals were sacrificed at 60 days of age. Administration of testosterone significantly increased the growth of the tail and tibia in comparison to the animals which did not receive testosterone after estradiol administration. The results of the present study show that the inhibitory effect of estradiol on body growth of young male rats is not only the result of decreased food intake and that testosterone can improve the skeletal growth of male rats altered by previously given estradiol.  相似文献

Seventeen male crab-eating macaques drawn from two captive troops, were tested on a brightness discrimination, reversal learning task. Fourteen of these animals completed ten reversals. It was found that the performance of the three highest ranking animals from each troop, taken together, was poorer than that of the lower ranking animals that were tested. The high ranking animals made more errors before reaching criterion on both initial learning and the reversal problems. Analysis of error patterns revealed that, while the high ranking animals had no more difficulty than the others in withholding their responses to the previously correct stimulus following reversals, they did not adopt the correct strategy as soon as the low ranking animals. The results have been interpreted in terms of a carry-over of a hypothetical factor or factors resulting from pressures created by the ongoing social dynamics involved in establishing and maintaining a given social rank at the time laboratory testing occurred. ABSTRACT

In this paper the results are presented of a national survey in the Netherlands. The aim was to identify and describe the convictions about animals that people have in Dutch society and the role of these in judgments on the culling of healthy animals during an animal disease epidemic. A total of 1,999 responses was received and two groups of respondents were distinguished: A profile (50% of the respondents) and B profile (28%). The A profile respondents considered humans to be superior to animals, whereas the B profile respondents considered both to be equal. Both groups were of the opinion that animals have value, that people have a duty to care for and protect all animals, and that all animals have a right to life. These convictions were based on a number of values, such as animal life, the ability of animals to feel pain and emotions (sentience), and the importance of animal species in the ecosystem. The results of a case study suggest that convictions play a role in judgment. More A respondents agreed with the culling of healthy animals during an animal disease epidemic. More B respondents partly (dis)agreed or disagreed with this. Most respondents (A: 81%, B: 61%) agreed with culling to protect human life. The most important argument against culling was the value of animal life. The A respondents rated all arguments against culling significantly lower than did the B respondents.  相似文献

The Syracuse high- and low-avoidance rats, which have been selectively bred for good (SHA/Bru) or poor (SLA/Bru) avoidance learning in a two-way shuttle box, differ in emotionality. This experiment investigated the effect of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), administered centrally (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 μg), on conditioned suppression and on the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenocortical system. Three groups of animals were used: SHA/Bru rats conditioned at 0.21 or 0.43 mA and SLA/Bru rats conditioned at 0.21 mA. The results confirm those of previous studies which found that SLA/Bru rats show greater conditioned suppression than the SHA/Bru rats at the low shock intensity and that at 0.43 mA, the SHA/Bru animals acquire a level of conditioning comparable to that of the SLA/Bru animals at 0.21 mA. The results show that the nonlinear behavioral effect of CRH is independent of strain and produces comparable effects in animals of both strains, but only when level of conditioning is equated. Adrenal and plasma concentrations of corticosterone increased in all three groups of animals as a direct linear function of dose of CRH. Both greater levels of conditioning and larger amounts of CRH increase the synthesis of corticosterone more in SHA/Bru animals than in the SLA/Bru animals. Thus, genetic variation, which differentiates the behavioral and endocrinological characteristics of these animals, shows that these effects of CRH can be independent of each other and suggests that some minimal level of conditioned fear is necessary for CRH to exert its anxiogenic effect.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Prior research shows that the correlation between religiosity and support for animal rights can be positive, negative, or zero. We hypothesized that this relationship may actually be curvilinear, where a moderate degree of religiosity may reduce support for killing animals (compared with non-religiosity or atheism), but a very high degree of religiosity (e.g., fundamentalism) might increase support for killing animals. We tested this hypothesis in a large sample of American undergraduate students, using a correlational study design with self-report measures of religiosity and of support for killing animals in different domains. The results indicated that, in support of our hypothesis, the relationship between religiosity and support for killing animals is curvilinear, as moderate levels of religiosity were related to less support for killing animals. People who were either not religious at all or very religious were the ones who most supported the killing of animals. Belief in God in itself was related to less support for killing animals. We then replicated the curvilinear relationship between religiosity and support for killing animals using data from four experiments from a previously published article on support for killing animals. We briefly consider possible explanations for these findings, the limitations of the study, and propose directions for future research. Overall, we believe that this study helps clarify the complex relationship between religiosity and support for killing animals, and advances the scientific understanding of the psychological forces that motivate people to support or object to the killing of animals.  相似文献

This paper hypothesizes that average muscle length and minimum tendon strain govern muscle and tendon length adaptation in all situations. A model has been implemented to test this hypothesis, and simulations have been performed for normal development, bone lengthening, immobilization, and retinacular release experiments in young and adult animals. The simulation results predict that both muscle and tendon lengthen during normal development, with the rate of tendon growth slowing faster than the rate of muscle growth. The results also predict that muscle length increases during bone lengthening in both young and adult animals, while tendon length increases only in young animals. For immobilization in adult animals, the results predict that muscle length increases when the muscle is immobilized in a lengthened position and decreases when the muscle is immobilized in a shortened position with no change in tendon length. For immobilization in young animals, the results predict reduced muscle growth and increased tendon growth regardless of immobilization position. Finally, the simulations predict that retinacular release which increases excursion of the musculotendinous unit leads to increased muscle length with decreased tendon length in young animals and decreased muscle length with no change in tendon length in adult animals. These simulation results are consistent with experimental findings reported in the literature by other investigators. This suggests that average muscle length and minimum tendon strain may represent general principles that govern muscle and tendon length adaptation.  相似文献

Dysfunction of the inner ear as caused by presbyacusis, injuries or noise traumata may result in subjective tinnitus, but not everyone suffering from one of these diseases develops a tinnitus percept and vice versa. The reasons for these individual differences are still unclear and may explain why different treatments of the disease are beneficial for some patients but not for others. Here we for the first time compare behavioral and neurophysiological data from hearing impaired Mongolian gerbils with (T) and without (NT) a tinnitus percept that may elucidate why some specimen do develop subjective tinnitus after noise trauma while others do not. Although noise trauma induced a similar permanent hearing loss in all animals, tinnitus did develop only in about three quarters of these animals. NT animals showed higher overall cortical and auditory brainstem activity before noise trauma compared to T animals; that is, animals with low overall neuronal activity in the auditory system seem to be prone to develop tinnitus after noise trauma. Furthermore, T animals showed increased activity of cortical neurons representing the tinnitus frequencies after acoustic trauma, whereas NT animals exhibited an activity decrease at moderate sound intensities by that time. Spontaneous activity was generally increased in T but decreased in NT animals. Plastic changes of tonotopic organization were transient, only seen in T animals and vanished by the time the tinnitus percept became chronic. We propose a model for tinnitus prevention that points to a global inhibitory mechanism in auditory cortex that may prevent tinnitus genesis in animals with high overall activity in the auditory system, whereas this mechanism seems not potent enough for tinnitus prevention in animals with low overall activity.  相似文献

The relationship between antisperm antibodies as determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the occurrence of alterations in testicular weight and histology was studied following vasectomy in Lewis rats. The effects of vasovasostomy on antisperm antibody levels were also examined. At 1, 3, and 4 months after vasectomy, the mean absorbance values in an ELISA for sera from animals with altered testes was significantly greater than that from animals lacking testicular alterations. However, animals showing positive antisperm antibody responses were represented both in the group with testicular alterations and among those that lacked testicular damage. Levels of antisperm antibody in both vasectomy and vasovasostomy groups significantly exceeded that for sham-operated animals, but the level of antisperm antibodies in vasovasostomized animals with positive responses was similar to vasectomized animals one and four months after reanastomosis. It is suggested that persistence of antisperm antibodies or testicular alterations, or both, may play roles in limiting the restoration of fertility after vasovasostomy.  相似文献

The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Center for Veterinary Medicine issued a voluntary request to producers of livestock clones not to introduce food from clones or their progeny into commerce until the agency had assessed whether production of cattle, swine, sheep, or goats by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) posed any unique risks to the animal(s) involved in the process, humans, or other animals by consuming food from those animals, compared with any other assisted reproductive technology (ART) currently in use. Following a comprehensive review, no anomalies were observed in animals produced by cloning that have not also been observed in animals produced by other ARTs and natural mating. Further systematic review on the health of, and composition of meat and milk from, cattle, swine, and goat clones and the progeny of cattle and sheep did not result in the identification of any food-consumption hazards. The agency therefore concluded that food from cattle, swine, and goat clones was as safe to eat as food from animals of those species derived by conventional means. The agency also concluded that food from the progeny of the clone of any species normally consumed for food is as safe to eat as those animals. The article also describes the methodology used by the agency to analyze data and draw these conclusions, the plans the agency has proposed to manage any identified risks, and the risk communication approaches the agency has used.  相似文献

The potential for commercial application of transgenic technologies in domestic animals is discussed in relation to the areas where a significant impact on agriculture might be expected. These are the endocrine system, novel biochemical pathways, structural proteins of milk and of textile fibers, and the immune system. Manipulation of the endocrine system has been investigated for some years and it is clear that very accurate control is needed over gene expression if this approach is to prove commercially useful. The area most advanced in commercial application is the production of high-value pharmaceutical proteins in the mammary glands of domestic animals. Other applications that are discussed remain to be proven in larger animals despite being demonstrated laboratory test animals. These include a functional cysteine biosynthetic pathway and a functional glyoxylate cycle transferred from bacteria to mice, and alterations to the proteins of hair that change the physical properties of the resultant fibers. Research is also actively directed toward novel approaches for providing domestic animals with resistance to insects.  相似文献
