Reflections on Ernst Mayr's This is Biology

In this essay I argue that Ernst Mayr's idea that the emergence of evolutionary biology in Western thought was delayed by the pernicious influence of the false ideologies of Platonism, Christianity, and physicalism is ahistorical and anti-evolutionary, that similar ideas, especially his antipathy to physicalism, prejudice his account of the transformation of natural history and medical science into biology, that his organicist resolution of the perennial conflict between mechanism and vitalism is an unstable compound of semi-holism and semi-mechanism, that his conception of biology as the true bridge between the sciences and the humanities, ethics, and social theory is open to question (especially as to the adequacy of the theory of natural selection to account for every aspect of human nature), and that his depiction of science as the sovereign key to understanding everything known to exist or happen in this universe cannot be justified at the bar of reason.     

Ultrastructure of motor nerve terminals on different types of muscle fibers in the atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa,L.)

Summary White and intermediate parietal muscle fibers of Myxine are innervated focally at one end. Most synaptic vesicles are empty. These terminals also contain 1–2% large 800–1.100 Å dense-core vesicles. Red fibers of parietal and craniovelar muscle are innervated in a distributed fashion, and the presynaptic profiles contain a higher number of large dense-core vesicles (averaging 9% and 15%, respectively; up to 37%). For all terminals the synaptic gap is 450–600 Å wide, and postsynaptic folds are absent.Empty synaptic vesicles exist as round or elongated profiles. The proportion of elongated profiles increases by formation from round ones when increasing the molarity of the buffer in the aldehyde fixative. Furthermore, the proportion of elongated vesicle profiles in terminals on Myxine white fibers at different buffer molarities, is identical with that in mammalian motor terminals at similar molarities. On this basis the significance and mode of formation of elongated vesicle profiles is discussed. The conclusion is made that the susceptibility of flattening depends on the osmotic pressure of the vesicle contents once the aldehyde has influenced the vesicle membrane.The different vesicle populations in terminals on different types of muscle fibers are significant. Die Feinstruktur der Zirbeldrüse normaler,trächtiger und experimentell beeinflußter Meerschweinchen

Zusammenfassung In der Meerschweinchenzirbeldrüse lassen sich elektronenmikroskopisch helle und dunkle Pinealzellen sowie einzelne Gliazellen nachweisen. In den bei weitem überwiegenden hellen Pinealzellen zeichnet sich ein Teil der vesicle-crowned rodlets (VCR) durch lokale Auftreibungen aus. Von VCR deutlich abzugrenzen sind die vesicle-crowned balls (VCB). Erstmalig beschrieben wird das Vorkommen von sog. Zylindern, die als Vorstufen von VCB aufgefaßt werden. In den relativ seltenen dunklen Pinealzellen, die sich durch chromatinreiche Kerne und elektronendichtes Zytoplasma auszeichnen, sind Vesikel, VCR, VCB und Zylinder seltener als in hellen Pinealzellen. Die reichlich vorhandenen marklosen Nervenfasern finden sich vor allem in perivasculären Räumen, seltener im Parenchym. Synapsen zwischen Nerven und Pinealzellen wurden nicht beobachtet. In den Zirbeldrüsen trächtiger Meerschweinchen zeichnen sich in der 2. Hälfte der Tragzeit die hellen Pinealzellen durch stärkere Lappung der Kerne, gehäuftes Auftreten von laktiven Zonen, Vermehrung von Mitochondrien, glattem ER, agranulären Vesikeln, VCR, VCB und Zylindern aus. Die dunklen Pinealzellen nehmen während der Tragzeit an Zahl zu. Post partum bilden sich diese Veränderungen innerhalb einer Woche zurück. Längerer Aufenthalt der Tiere in Dunkelheit führt zu einer Aktivierung der hellen Pinealzellen mit auffallender Vermehrung der VCR und zu einer Zunahme der dunklen Zellen. Unter Dauerbelichtung kommt es in den hellen Zellen zu einer Abnahme fast aller Zellorganellen und zu einer starken Vermehrung der VCR, die nach 70 Tagen auch Formveränderungen aufweisen. Nach Reserpinbehandlung beobachtet man eine Verminderung und degenerative Veränderungen der VCR. Es wird diskutiert, daß die VCR als prae- bzw. postsynaptische Strukturen der Erregungsübertragung von Nerven zu Pinealzellen bzw. von Pinealzellen untereinander dienen könnten.

The fine structure of the pineal gland of normal, pregnant and experimentally affected guinea-pigs

Summary By means of electron microscopy light and dark pinealocytes can be distinguished in the guinea-pig pineal gland. Glial cells are rare. In the light pinealocyte. the most frequent cell type, some vesicle-crowned rodlets (VCR) show circumscribed thickenings. From these structures vesicle-crowned balls (VCB) have to be clearly distinguished. Furthermore cylinders occur, which, it is suggested, are precursors of VCB. Dark pinealocytes characterized by chromatin-rich nuclei and electron-dense cytoplasm are rare and contain fewer vesicles, VCR, VCB and cylinders than light pinealocytes. Numerous non-myelinated nerve fibres are situated within perivascular spaces, a few also in the parenchyma. Synapses between nerve fibres and pinealocytes were not observed. In the pineal gland of pregnant guinea-pigs the following changes can be observed in the second half of gestation. The light cells show many nuclear indentations and an increase of active zones, mitochondria, smooth ER, agranular vesicles, VCR, VCB, and cylinders respectively. The dark cells increase in number. After birth these changes reverse to normal within one week. Constant darkness leads to an activation of the light cells accompanied by an increase of the VCR and to an increase in number of the dark cells. Under constant illumination the light cells show a decrease of their organelles and a strong increase of the VCR. After 70 days the VCR also show a change in shape. Following reserpine treatment the VCR decrease in number and show signs of degeneration. It is discussed that the VCR function as pre- or postsynaptic structures and that they are involved either in transmitting impulses from nerve fibres to pinealocytes or from one pinealocyte to the other.

Mauritania: A neocolonial desert

Conclusion The Mauritanian ruling class, imposed upon the masses in 1960, continued to be assisted and advised by French cooperants techniques in the post-colonial period working closely with international finance capital, and have been promising their subjects that the construction of their society depended on the successful operation of multinational cooperation, represented in the country by MIFERMA and SOMIMA. By the 1970's it became clear to the majority of the Mauritanian people that these foreign firms were carrying out the systematic pillage of their resources rather than stimulating the development of their country; and that the rapid growth of the extractive sector was part of a radical process of peripherization, which has woven the Mauritanian economy and society into the capitalist center. Moreover, external economic aid pushed the neo-colonial state into the debt trap. Accordingly, Bonte observed that while production apparently increased and while private capital certainly flowed into the country, it flowed out in even larger quantities. These flows led to a persistent deficit in the balance of payment and to a growing debt [95]. This trend has been worsening in recent years. Without loans from European, American, and conservative Arab regimes, the neo-colonial state would have collapsed financially. Indeed, from 1970 to 1975, foreign loans provided between 75 and 90 percent of the funds for the governmental development programs [96].The social conditions of the people drastically worsened in the 1970's. For instance, in 1976 a government official admitted that only 15 percent of the total population received medical attention. Moreover, the activities of the multinational corporations have destroyed the supportive communal structures of the rural masses which, in the past, have minimized the consequences of drought and other economic crises. When the 1969–74 drought occurred, innumerable droughtstricken nomads and subsistence agriculturalists found themselves helpless and completely destitute. Confronted with such as state of affairs, they had no alternative but to flee to the mushrooming slums surrounding the urban centers, there to lead mutilated and mutilating lives.For these masses neither Mauritanianization nor nationalization have prevented their growing immiseration. The extractive activities, whether under the aegis of multinational corporations or state-owned companies, which remain dependent on finance capital and its market, cannot resolve the fundamental problems of the Mauritanian people. On the contrary, the operations of these foreigndominated companies negate the possibility of a liberating, diversified industrial process that relies on, assesses and takes into account the primary needs of the people. Only an industry that results in large employment effects generated in proportion to the amount of capital invested and whose management is assumed to a large degree by the producers themselves, can achieve deep development of a country like Mauritania. Extractive industry controlled by multinational corporations cannot generate positive linkage effects [97] to the local economic sectors powerful enough to effectuate their development within a well-planned, culturally integrated, and economically fruitful national social economy. A neo-colonial state of the Mauritanian type — ruled by a class that owes its ascension to power to a retreating colonialism — formed as a mediating mechanism for prolonging the foreign exploitation of its own resources — cannot resolve the basic problems of the people. In short, when the iron ore of Mauritania is worked out, that country will go back to the desert [98]. However, this observation by Amin is apocalyptic, pessimistic, and dangerously deterministic. Another, more viable, more human, alternative is for the northwestern African peoples to extricate themselves from the world capitalist system, and its local comprador bourgeois allies. They must find a way to dis-establish the neo-colonial, inviable statelets and replace them with a confederation of socialist republics devoted to the elimination of exploitation and the construction of authentic national cultures.Mahfoud Bennoune is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Stockton State College, Pomona, New Jersey.     

Effect of androgens on histochemical fibre type

Summary The temporal muscles of the guinea pig show a sexual differentiation reflected in their histochemical enzyme pattern. Using histochemical methods for mitochondrial (SDH, -GPDH), and glycolytic enzymes (phosphorylase, LDH) it could be shown, that in adult animals the male muscle is a white muscle with marked activity of glycolytic enzymes, the female muscle a red muscle displaying high activity of mitochondrial enzymes. This differential enzyme pattern can be converted by the application of testosterone to the female type during the postnatal development. The male sex hormone thus affects the histochemical enzyme pattern of the muscle, converting the red, female into a white, male muscle in the female guinea pig.     

Electrophoretic variation between class II molecules expressed on HLA-DRw8 homozygous typing cells reveals multiple distinct haplotypes

Two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis of immunoprecipitated HLA-DR antigens from eight homozygous typing cells (HTC) expressing the HLA-DRw8 specificity revealed a clustering of polymorphic chain patterns into distinct electrophoretic variants. The variant patterns correlate with three discrete HLA-D clusters that are defined in the mixed leukocyte culture reaction (MLR) using DRw8-positive HTC. These HLA-D clusters have been provisionally designated Dw8.1, detected primarily in Caucasoids, Dw8.2, detected primarily in American Indians, and Dw8.3, detected predominantly in Orientals. All three HLA-Dw8.1 cell lines express a single DR-locus product as defined by immunoprecipitation with a DR-specific monoclonal antibody, P4.1. This DR chain is identical among the Dw8.1 cell lines and different from the DR chains of the Dw8.2 and Dw8.3 cell lines. Two separate Dw8.2 HTC express a shared DR chain that is slightly more basic than the 8.1 DR molecule; interestingly, one of these lines also expresses an additional DR-like chain not found in the other cells. Thus, the two lines defining the Dw8.2 cluster share one distinct class 11 molecule, but differ in another and therefore are not biochemically HLA-identical. Cells from the Dw8.3 cluster are likewise distinct from all other Dw8 clusters. One additional DRw8-positive HTC has been analyzed and found to be distinct from the Dw8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 clusters by both MLR and 2D gels. lmmunoprecipitates using monoclonal antibody 1B5 [anti-DR and anti-DQ(DS)] identify additional polymorphic class II variants among the cell lines tested. These data indicate that HLA-DRw8 is a public serologic specificity present on class II molecules expressed on multiple distinct haplotypes. These haplotypes differ from each other in expression of polymorphic class II molecules encoded by at least two HLA loci. They also differ in HLA-D, even though they all type as HLA-DRw8 homozygous. In Dw8.2, variation in expressed chains is not reflected in variation in HLA-D, indicating that MLR, as well as serologic typing, does not detect the full degree of allelic polymorphism within HLA.     

The effect of intracapillary media feed protocols on hollow fiber cell culture

Summary Two intracapillary (IC) media feed protocols termed media rich and media lean were examined in an effort to understand the effect of this variable on hollow fiber cell cultures. The media rich protocol emphasized a high volume IC media per day (5 liters) containing no serum and a normal amount of extracapillary (EC) media serum (10% v/v). Alternatively, the media lean protocol used up to 1.0 liter of IC media per day containing 5% v/v serum and increased EC media serum (20% v/v). Both protocols produced substantial amounts of antibody in 25 days using HFN7.1 hybridoma cells (ATCC CRL 1606), however the media rich protocol produced twice as much antibody as the media lean protocol. The metabolism of the cells was dramatically different as measured by glucose uptake rate (GUR) with media lean cells having a six-fold lower GUR. Our results indicate that the media rich protocol is useful for producing larger amounts of antibody in a short time frame. The media lean protocol may be considered when the production costs of antibody, particularly media and serum, is the overriding concern.     

Meiotic studies ofElymus nutans andE. jacquemontii (Poaceae,Triticeae) and their hybrids withPseudoroegneria spicata and seventeenElymus species

Hybridizations ofElymus nutans andE. jacquemontii were carried out with one species ofPseudoroegneria (S genome), and 20Elymus species, each containing either of the SH, SY, SYH, or SYW genomes. Chromosome configurations were analysed at metaphase I of the two target taxa and their interspecific hybrids. It is concluded that (i)E. nutans is an allohexaploid containing the SYH genomes, andE. jacquemontii is an allotetraploid having the SY genomes; (ii) the genomic affinity is associated with the geographic distance between the species studied; (iii) minor genomic structural rearrangements have occurred within the hexaploid taxon ofE. nutans.     

The adaptive significance of cultural behavior: Comments and reply

Summary Fundamentally, theoretically, there is only one process underlying genetic and cultural evolution: natural selection. Organism fitness-enhancement (adaptive significance) is one of its practical mechanisms; group formation and maintenance is another, often but not always through fitness-enhancement; and need-fulfillment is still another. If Durham can accept that formulation, and switch from organism-thinking to instruction-thinking (Cloak, 1975: 178), he will free himself from two handicaps: First, he can forget his worries about reductionism and determinism (1976a: 100, 101). Under this general theory of natural selection, cultural evolutionis biological evolution, continued by other (nongenetic) means. Second, he will spare himself the appearance of anthropomorphism, mentalism, and wishy-washiness attendant on his discussion of kinds of significance, other than adaptive significance, of cultural behaviors (1976a: 102–106, 115).     

Problems of studying coral-reef ecosystems

The term reef has still to be defined in ecological terms. It is essential to discuss and to classify the most significant characteristics of coral-reef ecosystems. Coral reefs involve a number of interdependent problems of semantics, planeteary and regional geotectonics, paleo geography, geomorphology, ecology, hydrobiology and zoogeography. From an ecological point of view, the solution to these problems requires analyzing the correlation between the notions biocoenosis and ecosystem. We may regard a coral reef either as a super organism or as a complex aggregation of almost mutually independent organisms, more or less randomly composed during evolution. The pros and cons, as well as contraditions between these two possibilities can be largely setteled by means of historical anlyses.     

Task Relevance Enhances Early Transient and Late Slow-Wave Activity of Distributed Cortical Sources

The primary purpose of these studies was to link together concepts related to attention/working memory and feedforward/feedback activity using MEG response profiles obtained in humans. Similar to recent studies of attention in monkeys, we show early spike-like activity (<200 ms poststimulus), most likely reflecting an early transient excitatory response mixed with feedback influences, followed by slow-wave activity (>200 ms poststimulus) in MEG cortical response profiles evoked by a visual working memory task. We experimentally dissociated the early transient activity from the later sustained activity (predominately feedback) by conducting an auditory size classification task. Words, representing common objects, evoked activity in occipital cortex (presumably due to imagery) even though visual stimuli were not present in this task. The initial spike was absent from the response profile obtained from occipital cortex, leaving only slow-wave activity, thereby allowing us to characterize or profile feedback activity in this situation. Attention or task relevance enhanced the initial spike and slow-wave activity in visually responsive areas. Prefrontal activity, along the superior frontal sulcus, evoked by the working memory task, was active later in time than initial activity in visual cortex and later than the earliest effect of attention modulation in visual cortex.     

Determination of the apparent K mfor oxygen of Beneckea natriegens using the respirograph technique

The affinity for oxygen of the marine bacterium Beneckea natriegens was mesured using the Respirograph technique of Degn and Wohlrab. Values between 0.15 and 0.25 M oxygen were obtained for the apparent K _mfor oxygen regardless of the nature of the respiratory substrate. These values are an order of magnitude lower than those previously reported for B. natriegens using the conventional closed oxygen electrode system.     

Ultrastructure and behaviour of the spindle pole body of the aphid-pathogenic fungusErynia neoaphidis

Summary A detailed account of the ultrastructure and behaviour of the spindle pole body (SPB) of the entomophthoraceous fungusErynia neoaphidis is presented for the first time.The SPB consists of extranuclear (ENC) and intranuclear (INC) components. The ENC is a saucepan-shaped structure which lies in a pocket of the nuclear envelope. It is composed of a forked, fibrillar handle and a shallow, cylindrical pan. The pan has a wall of two layers, both of which are thickened with a regular periodicity so that they appear to be beaded. It is postulated that the pan is formed from rough endoplasmic reticulum and that it synthesizes the amorphous, electron-dense material coating the ENC.The INC is a saucer-shaped, electron-dense plaque in which the ends of the spindle microtubules terminate. During metaphase, a clear zone separates the INC from the nuclear envelope and persists until telophase. The roles of the amorphous, electron-dense material and the clear zone as well as the method of SPB replication are discussed.     

Concluding remarks

On the basis of symposium contributions onChlorella, Hibbertia, Eucalyptus, Ambrosia and on numerical approaches some fundamental problems of (bio)systematics, evolution, and taxonomic categories are discussed: Methods available for analysing affinities; conflicting evidence from phenetic, biochemical, cytogenetic and other analyses; further classification problems in cases of intermediacy, etc. While sibs of various levels and their natural hierarchy often can be objectively defined, this appears impossible for particular taxonomic levels itself (e. g. species). A single objective taxonomic system of organisms is unrealistic. Certain guiding lines for relative and practicable concepts of species and genus are proposed.Presented at the symposium Speciation and the Species Concept during the XIIth International Botanical Congress, Leningrad, July 8, 1975.     

Spin-labelling studies of fragmented sarcoplasmic reticulum

Vesicular fragments of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) were spin labelled with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl, 4-isothiocyanate piperidine-1-oxyl (probe A) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl, 4-amino (N-iodoacetamide) piperidine-1-oxyl (probe B). Two to five moles of probe A or B were covalently bound to 10⁶g of membrane protein, with minimal loss of activity (ATPase, Ca²⁺, uptake). The EPR spectra of labelled SR were then studied in various experimental conditions.Strongly acid or alkaline pH, protein denaturation with ura, and membrane solubilization with deoxycholate produced marked alterations of the EPR spectra of spin-labelled SR, indicating changes in the local environment surrounding the probes, and the occurrence of conformational changes.A reversible modification of the EPR spectra of probe A and an accelerated efflux of accumulated Ca²⁺ were produced by increasing the temperature of SR suspensions from 30° to 40° C. Such a parallel behavior indicates that reversible structural transitions may control membrane permeability and Ca²⁺ efflux.ATP modifies the EPR spectra of probe B, suggesting that ATP binding to the membrane induces a structural change involving the local environment of certain sulfhydryl groups. The ATP concentration required for this effect is comparable to that requied for activation of ATPase. ADP and ITP are also effective, while pyrophosphate, AMP, and cyclic AMP are not. The effect of ATP is reversible.In other experiments, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (probeC) was equilibrated with concentrated suspensions of SR. The EPR spectra obtained thereafter indicate that probe C binds to the membrane fragments, still maintaining a high degree of motional freedom. These spectra were markedly changed by deoxycholate solubilization of the membrane fragments, while they were little affected by protein denaturation with guanidine. These results confirm the hypothesis that the region of distribution of probe C into SR, is prevalently constituted by low-viscosity lipids.Supported by research grants from USPHS (HE 09878), the American Heart Association (66742), and the Muscular Distrophy Association of America.     

Idioms of distress: Kinship and sickness among the people of the Kingdom of Tonga

Idioms of distress refers to the popular expression of emotional tension that arises in the relationship between sickness and kinship. By reference to case studies and discussions among the Polynesian people of Tonga, the author shows where such tension arises and how it influences the sickness process. Sickness is necessarily a collective phenomenon which can best be understood not simply as a clinical event, but as an experience that is part of the experience of family. Various ways of expressing distress as a reflexive encounter between personal and cultural meaning systems are reviewed, as are several new concepts such as doing sickness as kinship, and turning in the process of decision making in the kinship management of sickness. The explanatory models of sickness in Tonga are shown to encompass culturally sanctioned expressions of distress as part of the adaptive coping mechanisms in that society. Distress frequently emerges in somatic form, as a number of studies have shown. However, the author emphasizes the kinship meaning of sickness, kinship management and sickness therapy, the adaptive process of idiomatic expressions of distress, which are expanded here and offered as potential avenues for elaboration in other cultural milieu. Two aspects of the notion idioms of distress are noted, and the phenomenon is understood as a process which acts as a prime mover in social change.     

The nervous system of Microstomum lineare (Turbellaria,Macrostomida)

Summary The ultrastructure of release sites of neurochemical messenger substances in the microturbellarian Microstomum lineare was examined. Aminergic neurites form conventional synapses and synapse-like structures (SLS). Variants of true synapses include: single synapses with symmetric pre- and postsynaptic densities, shared synapses, i.e., contacts between 1 pre- and 2 postsynaptic fibres, en passant synapses between parallel axonal membranes, and synapses without thickenings having only clustered vesicles in the presynaptic terminal. SLS on a nerve cell soma or facing an intercellular stromal channel near muscles are described. Peptidergic neurites containing large granular vesicles (LGV) form synaptoids and signs of putative neurosecretory release. Synaptoids between neurites and between neurite and muscle have lucent vacuoles (about 100nm) and dense material at the contact site. In en passage synaptoids dense-core vesicles are embedded in electron-dense material at the contact site. Putative signs of release of neurosecretory material other than typical exocytosis have been observed.     

Pancreatic glucagon cells contain endorphin-like immunoreactivity

Summary On the basis of the histochemical activity of succinic dehydrogenase, only two fibre-types are distinguished in pigeon pectoralis major muscle. These are narrow Red and broad White. The histochemical activity of myofibrillar ATPase was studied in these two distinct fibre-types. Both fibre-types showed high activity for the ATPase. Red fibres of pigeon pectoralis were not alkali-labile, at incubation pH 9.4, as were the Type I fibres of both avian and mammalian muscles. Again unlike Type I fibres, the Red fibres of pigeon pectoralis lacked the characteristic activation of acid-preincubated ATPase reaction. Pigeon pectoralis Red fibres are known to posses some characteristics of fast-twitch fibres (e.g. high fat, considerable phosphorylase, fibrillenstruktur myofibrillar arrangement, focal en plaque pattern of nerve endings). It is emphasized, therefore, that the pigeon pectoralis Red fibres are not equivalent to Type I or slow-twitch, muscle fibres, but they are possibly fast-twitch fatigue resistent or Type II Red muscle fibres.     

Ritual,the state,and the transformation of emotional discourse in Iranian society

This paper explores the social and cultural organization of Iranian emotional discourse and its transformation in post-revolutionary Iran. First, the Moharram dramas we participated in during field research are described, indicating how these performances organized a prototypical view of the social order, the self, and the passions. Using Kapferer's distinction between transcendental and transformative rituals, we argue that these dramas were traditionally organized as transcendental rites. Second, data on grieving rituals and depressive illness among Iranians is introduced, focusing on the transformative qualities of mourning rites and suggesting an interpretation of depression as a failure of the work of culture. Third, the appropriation of these symbolic forms of society, self, and the emotions by the current Iranian Islamic state and the role of the state in defming the meaning and legitimacy of emotions and their expression is analyzed.
