The effects of para-chlorophenoxyacetic acid(p-CPA) application in improving the reduction in growthrate and sugar accumulation, and on the peel color and firmness ofparthenocarpic fruit, and its residual content in the treated fruit wereexamined. p-CPA application to parthenocarpic fruit duringthe rapid growth stage [5 or 10 days after anthesis (DAA)] enhanced the fruitweight, but was ineffective when applied at 40 DAA. p-CPA– promoting of fruit growth increased as the applied concentration rose,so the weight of fruit treated by p-CPA at 500 mgL–1 (the highest level) was the greatest in all plots;however the peel was considerably softer and abnormal swelling occurred in thenet. p-CPA applied to parthenocarpic fruit from 5 to 25DAAincreased sucrose content, the most effective application time being justbeforethe onset of sucrose accumulation (25 DAA). Fructose and glucose contents wereconsiderably lower than that of sucrose, and were not affected byp-CPA. p-CPA promoted sucroseaccumulation when applied to pollinated fruit, which showed the highest levelofenhancement in all plots. During the maturation period, the peel ofparthenocarpic fruit was a darker green color and the netting did not fullydevelop compared to pollinated fruit. p-CPA applicationsat10 or 25 DAA improved the peel color and netting of parthenocarpic fruits;therefore, the L value was similar to that of seeded fruit and the hue angledeclined. Applications of p-CPA during the early growthstage reduced the firmness of the mesocarp concomitant with increases in theapplied concentrations. p-CPA was present in the fruit atharvest, when applied from 10 to 25 DAA, even at 20 mgL–1. The residue level increased as the appliedconcentration rose, but p-CPA was not detected in thenon-treated plot.  相似文献

We examined the effects of seed formation andpara-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (p-CPA)treatment on the growth and endogenous indole acetic acid (IAA) content ofmuskmelon fruit. The growth of parthenocarpic muskmelon fruit induced by 1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-3-phenylurea (CPPU) declined 15 days after anthesis (DAA),resulting in smaller fruit than those pollinated at harvest.p-CPA improved the growth of parthenocarpic fruit thatweretreated between 10 and 25 DAA. Endogenous IAA levels in the seedsof artificially pollinated fruit were at their highest at 10 DAA,then decreased, and increased again after 30 to 45 DAA, whereas, the levels in the empty seeds of parthenocarpic fruit were significantly lowerthroughout development. Although endogenous IAA levels in the placenta ofpollinated fruit were lower than those in the seeds, the changing patterns werevery similar to those in the seeds. Endogenous IAA levels in the mesocarp ofpollinated fruit remained lower than those in the placenta throughout fruitgrowth, and the pattern of change was similar to that of the placenta. Levelsinthe seed, placenta and mesocarp of p-CPA-nontreatedparthenocarpic fruit stayed lower than those in pollinated fruit.p-CPA increased the levels of IAA in the seeds, placenta, and mesocarp of parthenocarpic fruit after the first treatment (10DAA) to 15 DAA, while those in the mesocarp increasedsignificantly after the second treatment (25 DAA), but did notincrease in empty seed and placenta.  相似文献

Ethylene, indol-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellin-like substances (GAs) and abscisic acid (ABA) were analysed in extracts from normal, seed-containing and parthenocarpic tomato fruits throughout fruit development. Parthenocarpic fruit growth was induced with an auxin (4-CPA), morphactin (CME) or gibberellic acid (GA3) and compared with that of pollinated control fruits. Fruit growth was only affected by the treatment with GA3, decreasing size and fresh weight by 60%. The peak sequence of hormones during fruit development was ethylene-GAs-IAA-ABA. Seeded fruits contained the highest levels of IAA and ABA but the lowest levels of GAs. Also, in seeded fruits, a high proportion of IAA and ABA was found in the seeds whereas this was not the case for GAs.Hormone levels of tomato fruits may be successfully, easily and reproducibly altered by inducing parthenocarpic fruit growth and thus eliminating development of seeds which are a major source of hormone synthesis. In spite of markedly changed hormone levels, there was no obvious relationship between fruit growth and extractable hormones per se. However, the results indicate that a high ratio of GAs: auxins is unfavourable for growth of tomato fruits.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of 1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-3-phenylurea(CPPU) and para-chlorophenoxyacetic acid(p-CPA) treatments on the sucrose metabolism-relatedenzymeactivities in excised mesocarp discs of muskmelon fruit at different growthstages. Both a CPPU and a p-CPA treatment applied to discsprepared at 5 and at 20 days after anthesis (DAA) increased acid invertase (AI)activity and neutral invertase (NI) activity, but neither treatment affectedthese activities in the discs prepared at 45 DAA. Both plant growth substancesincreased the activity of sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) in the discs at 5and20 DAA, but neither affected it in the 45 DAA discs. The sucrose synthase (SS)activity was markedly increased by p-CPA treatment in the20 and 45 DAA discs, but was not affected at 5 DAA. CPPU treatment did notactivate SS of discs throughout the growth stage.  相似文献

Indol-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellin-like substances (GAs), and abscisic acid (ABA) were measured throughout the first 35 days of fruit development in agar diffusates from seeded and parthenocarpic tomato fruits. Parthenocarpic fruit growth was induced with either an auxin (4-CPA), morphactin (CME) or gibberellic acid (GA3). IAA and GAs were at their highest levels in diffusates during the early stages of fruit growth, whereas diffusible ABA increased later. Most IAA was found in diffusates from auxin-induced and seeded fruits, whereas GAs were at their lowest levels in seeded fruits. There were only minor differences in ABA concentrations regardlesss of the treatments.Levels of diffusible hormones of tomato fruits may be easily manipulated by inducing parthenocarpic fruit growth. In spite of no obvious relationship between fruit growth and hormone levels in this study, induced parthenocarpy is considered a useful tool to further elucidate the role of hormones in fruit development and sink-source interactions.  相似文献

Application of GA3, IAA or 4-CPA to tomato ovaries induced the development of parthenocarpic fruit, which showed different growth rates. In the pericarp cell division and cell enlargement was affected differentially. GA3-induced fruits had considerably less but larger cells than seeded control fruits, IAA treatment resulted in the same number of cells but these were smaller and 4-CPA treatment induced fruits with about 20% more cells. Reduction in cell number had a similar effect on final fruit size as diminution of cell size. A reduction in the number of cell division centres (area around vascular bundles) as well as changes in the degree of endoploidy are possible reasons for the observed reductions in cell numbers. Hormonal causes for the different number and size of pericarp cells after the various treatments are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of phosphate deficiency on the sugar accumulation and sugar partitioning in the root cells of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was studied. Bean plants were cultured 17 - 19 d on a phosphate-sufficient and phosphate-deficient nutrient medium. Phosphate deficit in the growth medium resulted in increased sugar concentration for about 30 % in the apoplastic and cytoplasmic compartments as well as in the vacuoles of root cells. However, the distribution of sugars between apoplast and cytoplasm compartment and vacuole was not affected by decreased phosphate concentration. About 20 % of sugars were found in the apoplast and cytoplasm, about 80 % in the vacuole. Low phosphate concentration enhanced influx of exogenous 14C-sucrose into meristematic and elongation zones of root. The 14C-labelled sugar content in the root tips increased for about 60 % as compared to control plants. Phosphate deficiency increased also 14C-glucose uptake and content in the root tips. However, the amount of 14CO2 liberated during respiration of P-deficient roots (after feeding with uniformly labelled 14C-glucose) was lower than 14CO2 respired by control plants, thus a large part of accumulated sugars seems to be metabolically inactive. The effect of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and gibberellic acid (GA3) applications on parthenocarpic fruit set in Rosa canina and Diospyros lotus was investigated. GA3 induced parthenocarpic fruit set in both plants, but IAA only in D. lotus. Maturation of seedless fruits was earlier than the seeded fruits. GA3 caused a decrease in the fresh mass and size of both fruits. IAA induced an increase in the fresh mass and size in parthenocarpic fruit of D. lotus. The translocation of 14C-sucrose to the different parts of the mustard (Brassica juncea) crop has been evaluated in the context of understanding the source to sink relationship in the thiol-induced enhanced crop yield. The foliar application of thiols like TU, TGA and DTT to the plant gave maximum sucrose phosphate synthase activity, which was found to have direct correlation with the movement of sucrose. The distribution pattern of 14C-sucrose follows the path from internode and node to pod via leaf. The translocation of 14C-sucrose was found to be a light dependent process. Among the nucleotides ATP and GTP, only ATP was able to promote the translocation and GTP was ineffective. In this unique in situ tracer experiment using 14C-sucrose, we could establish that thiols are able to enhance the translocation of sucrose from source to sink.  相似文献

Plant D-type cyclin genes (CYCDs) are important regulators of cell division. However, little is known on their participation during the early developmental stage of cucumber fruit. In this study, cucumber CYCD genes were identified and characterized. The expression levels of these genes during early fruit development were assessed from 0 to 8 days after anthesis (DAA). The results revealed the presence of 13 different CYCD genes, which were named according to identity percentages of the corresponding orthologs in Arabidopsis thaliana and poplar. The genomic organization of each subgroup CYCD was similar to their orthologs in A. thaliana and poplar. The expression levels of CsCYCD genes were analyzed in cucumber fruits under different treatments including natural parthenocarpic fruit, pollinated fruit, and N-(2-chloro-4-pyidyl)-N′-phenyurea (CPPU)-induced parthenocarpic fruit. The highest expression levels of most CsCYCDs genes were at four DAA in natural parthenocarpic and pollinated fruits. Interestingly, the expression patterns of 8 of 13 CsCYCD genes in natural parthenocarpic fruit were similar to those in pollinated fruit, but different from those in CPPU-induced parthenocarpic fruit. Collectively, the results of this study provide insights on the CYCDs involved in cucumber parthenocarpic fruit development.  相似文献

Background

For the first time, a morphometric characterization of chaura (Gaultheria pumila) fruits has been conducted between natural populations growing in the Villarrica National Park, Araucania Region, Chile. Chaura is a native Ericaceae from Chile that produces aromatic and tasty fruits which could be of agricultural interest.

Results

To influence the decision for a further domestication of G. pumila, both the fruit sizes (indicator of productivity) and the nutritional properties of the fruits have been determined from different subpopulations. Samples were a total of 74 plants and 15 fruits per plant which were randomly harvested following its natural distribution around the Villarrica volcano. Altogether, fresh weight, shape, color, diameter in the pole and the equatorial dimensions were determined as phenotypic traits of the G. pumila fruits. Meanwhile the total soluble solids, anthocyanin and pectin contents were calculated as nutritional traits of the Chaura fruits. Results showed a high phenotypic diversity between the sampled population with three main fruit shapes and three predominant colors. The round shapes were the most abundant, whereas a significant correlation was found among fruit size with weight and color. The highest fresh weight (597.3 mg), pole diameter (7.1 mm) and equatorial diameter (6.5 mm) were estimated in the pink color fruits.

Conclusions

The total amount of anthocyanin was higher in red fruits, while the maximum pectin content was obtained in the round white fruits. Overall results must pave the way for a further domestication and introduction of the Chaura species in the agro-productive system in Chile.  相似文献

The actions of plant regulators in set and development of fruitsare well known. However, the presence and function of endogenoushormones in parthenocarpic fruits have still not been sufficientlyinvestigated. A comparison between seeded and seedless fruitsmakes it possible to obtain a more accurate understanding ofsome relationships between growth regulators and stages of fruitdevelopment. Endogenous auxin and gibberellin activity levelsand some growth parameters (fresh and dry weight, cell numberand cell volume, DNA content) have been determined in tomatofruits (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) of the cultivar Venturaand of its isogenic parthenocarpic mutant. In both genotypes, auxin and gibberellin are present in the first week after anthesis, though at different concentrations and with different patterns. These two activities are involved in fruit setting. The simultaneousoccurrence of maximum auxin concentration and of the beginningof cell enlargement, in both genotypes, shows that the activitypresent at this time starts fruit development and possibly determinesthe size of the fruits. High auxin activity is observed only in seeded fruits 20–40days after anthesis, and it is probably synthesized by seeds.Gibberellin activity is present, corresponding to the changein fruit development from the mature green to pink stages. The effect of root growth temperature on maximal photosynthetic CO2 assimilation (P max), carbohydrate content, 14C-photoassimilate partitioning, growth, and root morphology of lettuce was studied after transfer of the root system from cool root-zone temperature (C-RZT) of 20 °C to hot ambient-RZT (A-RZT) and vice versa. Four days after RZT transfer, P max and leaf total soluble sugar content were highest and lowest, respectively, in C-RZT and A-RZT plants. P max and total leaf soluble sugar content were much lower in plants transferred from C-to A-RZT (C→A-RZT) than in C-RZT plants. However, these two parameters were much higher in plants transferred from A-to C-RZT (A→C-RZT) than in A-RZT plants. A-RZT and C→A-RZT plants had higher root total soluble sugar content than A→C-RZT and C-RZT plants. Leaf total insoluble sugar content was similar in leaves of all plants while it was the highest in the roots of C-RZT plants. Developing leaves of C-RZT plants had higher 14C-photoassimilate content than A-RZT plants. The A→C-RZT plants also had higher 14C-photoassimilate content in their developing leaves than A-RZT plants. However, more 14C-photoassimilates were translocated to the roots of A-RZT and C→A-RZT plants, but they were mainly used for root thickening than for its elongation. Increases in leaf area, shoot and root fresh mass were slower in C→A-RZT than in C-RZT plants. Conversely, A→C-RZT plants had higher increases in these parameters than A-RZT plants. Lower root/shoot ratio (R/S) in C-RZT than in A-RZT plants confirmed that more photoassimilates were channelled to the shoots than to the roots of C-RZT plants. Roots of C-RZT plants had greater total length with a greater number of tips and surface area, and smaller average diameter as compared to A-RZT plants. In C→A-RZT plants, there was root thickening but the increases in its length, tip number and surface area decreased. The reverse was observed for A→C-RZT plants. These results further supported the idea that newly fixed photoassimilates contributed more to root thickening than to root elongation in A-RZT and C→A-RZT plants.  相似文献

Fruits formed after different pollination regimes (flowers hand pollinated, unpollinated, and open pollinated) and the seeds obtained were characterized in the wild chilli pepper Capsicum flexuosum Sendtn. Pollen tube development in vivo and ovary growth were also analyzed. Seedless fruits and empty seeds were abundant among the fruits from hand pollinated and open pollinated flowers, while no more than one seed with embryo was found in a low percentage of fruits from such pollination treatments. Parthenocarpic fruits were formed from unpollinated flowers. Pollen tube growth was arrested in the upper third of the style for almost all pollen tubes except for a single one that may continue elongating occasionally. The ovary size increased continuously after pollination, even without fertilization. The sum of the evidence registered may help to explain the low number of seeds with embryo harvested, the abundance of seedless fruits formed from pollinated flowers (possibly parthenocarpic), and the high rate of parthenocarpic fruits formed from unpollinated flowers.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine partitioning within seeds of 14C-photoassimilates at three stages of seed development in two Phaseolus crosses — P. coccineus Lam. selfed, and P. coccineus x P. vulgaris L. Abortion of the interspecific embryos occurred when the seed reached 10 mm seed length. When expressed as sink strength (% dpm) or sink activity (% dmp/d.wt.) there were no differences in partitioning of 14C-photoassimilates when whole seeds were analyzed. If the seed was divided into seed coat, liquid endosperm, and embryo, the sink activity of the interspecific embryo was higher than that of the embryo in the selfed seed. Therefore, abortion of these interspecific Phaselus embryos appeared not to be caused by a lack of photoassimilates.Assistant Professor, Professors, respectively.Contribution from the Agr. Expt. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of soil water potential, depth of N placement, timing, and cultivar on uptake of a small dose of labeled N applied after anthesis by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Understanding postanthesis N accumulation should allow better control of grain protein concentration through proper manipulation of inputs. Two hard, red spring-wheat cultivars were planted in early and late fall each yr of a 2-yr field experiment. Less than 1 kg N ha–1 as K 15NO3 was injected into the soil at two depths: shallow (0.05 to 0.08 m) and deep (0.15 to 0.18 m). In both years an irrigation was applied at anthesis, and injections of labeled N were timed 4, 12, and 20 days after anthesis (DAA). Soil water potential was estimated at the time of injection. Mean recovery of 15N in grain and straw was 57% of the 15N applied. Recovery did not differ between the high-protein (Yecora Rojo) and the low-protein (Anza or Yolo) cultivars. Mean recovery from deep placement was 60% versus only 54% from shallow placement (p < 0.01). Delaying the time of injection decreased mean recovery significantly from 58% at 4 DAA to 54% at 20 DAA. This decrease was most pronounced in the shallow placement, where soil drying was most severe. Regressions of recovery on soil water potential of individual cultivar x yr x planting x depth treatments were significant only under the driest conditions. Stepwise regression of 15N recovery on soil water potential and yield parameters using data from all treatments of both years resulted in an equation including soil water potential and N yield, with a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.64. The translocation of 15N to grain was higher (0.89) than the nitrogen harvest index (0.69), and showed a highly significant increase with increase in DAA. This experiment indicates that the N uptake capacity of wheat remains reasonably constant between 4 and 20 DAA unless soil drying is severe.  相似文献
