Abstract: Previous ordination studies of land snail community composition have been limited to four or fewer habitat types from sites separated by no more than 300 km. To investigate the nature of large-scale patterns, North American land snail assemblages at 421 sites, representing 26 habitat types and covering a 1400 × 800 km area, were ordinated using global, nonmetric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS). These data were then subjected to model-based cluster analysis and kmeans clustering to identify the main compositional groups and most important environmental covariables. Six primary compositional groups were identified. Three of these largely represent upland forest and rock outcrop sites, while the remaining largely represent either lowland forest, lowland grassland or upland grassland habitats. The geographical location and moisture level of sites also influences community composition. A strong compositional difference exists between sites having duff vs. turf soil surface layers. Only 8% of sites were improperly classified when soil surface architecture was used as the sole predictor variable. Fully 43% of taxa exhibited significant preferences towards one of these surface types, while only 15% of relatively common (10 + occurrence) taxa showed no preferences. Twelve groups of closely related taxa within the same genus had members that favoured different surface types, indicating that differential selection pressures have existed over evolutionary time scales. While turf faunas appeared unaffected by anthropogenic disturbance, duff faunas were strongly impacted, suggesting that their conservation will require protection of soil surface architecture.  相似文献

Morphological, cytological and ecological observations were made onLycopodium clavatum. Among 121 individuals from 26 populations studied 31 were of the diploid cytotype with 2n=68, 45 were of the triploid cytotype with 2n=102 and 45 were of the tetraploid cytotype with 2n=136. The populations were divided into three types: (1) the sole type—characterized by a single cytotype occupying an entire population, (2) the mixed type A—characterized by two or three cytotypes occupying together the same population, but each cytotype choosing different habitats, (3) the mixed type B—characterized by two or three cytotypes occupying together the same population and sharing the same habitat with each other. The mixed type B populations were found in the places of the early phase of secondary succession in a plant community. In the sole type and the mixed type A, the habitat preference for each cytotype was described as follows: the habitat for the diploid was in humid and shady places, that for the tetraploid was in open and sunny, unstable places, and that for the triploid was intermediate between the other two. Each cytotype can progress towards occupying their optimum habitat successively from the mixed type B population to the mixed type A population and finally reaching the sole type population.  相似文献

Terrestrial isopods have adapted to land life by diverse morphological, physiological and behavioral changes. Isopod species exhibit a large variety of preferences ranging from moist to dry habitats. Isopod cuticle is an interesting model for studying adaptations to terrestrial life. The cuticle consists of a hierarchically organized material which provides protection and sites for muscle attachment. The present paper aimed to investigate the structure of the cuticle in three isopod species in order to relate some peculiar features to an adaptive process to environmental constraints. Results showed that general thickness of Ligia italica cuticle was quite similar to that observed in Porcellio lamellatus. Nevertheless, this cuticle was half as thick as in Porcellio laevis. Although the positive relationship found between total body lengths and the total thickness of the cuticle, the exocuticle did not show any differences between the three species. However, it is the development of a thicker endocuticle in P. laevis which make its total cuticle thickness more important.  相似文献

【目的】泉古菌为陆地热泉系统的主要古菌类群,可能在自然界生源元素的地球化学循环中发挥着重要作用。本研究旨在揭示俄罗斯堪察加地区热泉以及热泉周边区域的泉古菌多样性,同时基于之前已获得的我国云南地区热泉数据,比较两地区泉古菌群落差异。【方法】通过构建16S rRNA基因片段克隆文库获得序列信息和丰度,随后进行物种多样性、系统发育和群落结构差异分析。【结果】高温热泉Burlyashi Liza(BSL,89℃)中的泉古菌全部属于热变形菌纲(Thermoprotei)内的物种。中温热泉TF Vent 2(TFV,49℃)的群落结构主要由不确定的热变形菌纲类群、不确定的泉古菌类群、高温水环境泉古菌类群Ⅱ(HWCG-Ⅱ)和奇古菌下的Group1.1b类群组成。热泉周边常温环境的主要物种与热泉环境的代表性克隆pJP41一起聚成一个较大的遗传分枝。Jackknife聚类树和主坐标分析(Principal coordinates analysis,PCoA)的结果显示:温度相似的样点,其泉古菌群落结构相对来说更为相似。【结论】俄罗斯堪察加地区与我国云南地区热泉中的泉古菌存在着一定程度上的不同。陆地热泉系统影响着其周边环境的泉古菌类群。热泉中泉古菌群落结构受温度的明显影响。  相似文献

The diversity of a sublittoral epifaunal mollusk community of Punta Patilla, Sucre State, Venezuela, was studied from September 1990 to September 1991. We identified 25 species (14 bivalves and 11 gastropods) of mollusks that inhabit gravel, soft sand and bottoms covered by Thalassia testudinum. Total diversity indices were H' = 3.42. J' = 0.74 and 1-D = 0.85. Monthly diversity reached its maximum in March 1991 (3.12 bits/ ind.), June 1991 (2.88 bits/ind.) and September 1991 (2.95 bits/ind.); minimum diversity was recorded in August 1991 (1.20 bits/ind.). A log series model showed a diversity index alpha = 4.56 for species abundance data and alpha = 3.11 for biomass data. The more abundant species were Chione cancellata, Anigona listeri, Chione granulata and Area zebra among the bivalves, and Chicoreus brevifrons, Turritella variegata and Phllonotus pomum among the gastropods (which present maximum biomass). The average total biomass (56.80 g/m2) is low when compared to reports from other tropical zones.  相似文献

The distribution of fatty acids and fatty aldehydes of total lipids in mantle, foot and digestive gland of two prosobranch gastropod mollusks, Bellamya bengalensis and Pila globosa, from India were studied. The individual volatile compounds, e.g., acids and aldehydes, were separated by serially coupled capillary columns with different polarity stationary phase and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Saturated fatty acids were the main components and vary from 48–60%, monoenic are 18–30%, while polyunsaturates vary between 21–33%. The digestive glands of both the snail species contained cyclopropane fatty acids, not previously reported in gastropods.  相似文献

Summary Information on growth, gained from individually marked animals, is provided for at least one species of each of the families Trochidae, Neritidae, Strombidae, Cypraeidae, Thaisidae, Fasciolariidae, Vasidae and Conidae. Except in the cowries and strombs, which have determinate growth, shell growth is adequately described by a von Bertalanffy curve only to a certain point. Beyond this, growth continues slowly and at a rate that is independent of size. Size frequency distributions are characteristically negatively skew, mainly because early growth is fast relative to the total life span. Longevities seem to indicate that turnover rates are comparable to those of Prosobranch mollusks from colder seas.  相似文献

1. Focusing on the current environmental characteristics, the ‘habitat template’ theory proposes that life‐history strategies summarise how evolution has shaped species to cope with the temporal and spatial variability of their present environment. The hierarchical ‘landscape filters’ concept predicts that the distribution of species reflects their specific traits that allow them to pass through multiple habitat filters. Together, these theories showed the importance of identifying the functional relationships of species to selective habitat forces in order to predict the organisation and response of communities to the environment. 2. We test the relationships between life‐history traits of European freshwater fish species’ and their habitat preferences, to detect the strategies adopted by fish to cope with their current habitat. For this purpose, we use published data on species traits and habitat preferences (microhabitat hydraulics, temperature and oxygen level). We use multivariate analyses to classify fish species’ strategies and test the relationships between strategies and habitat preferences. 3. We identified a continuum of life‐history patterns between two extremes, with opportunistic and periodic species. Our study supports the idea that microhabitat hydraulics plays a more important role as a template for these species ecological strategies than temperature and oxygen level. Indeed, riffle habitats may select opportunistic species whereas weak relationships are found between species strategies and both their temperature and oxygen level preferences. In addition, the ratio between mortality and growth rate (dimensionless trait), reflecting a trade‐off between growth and survival, varied among species according to the use of their hydraulic habitat, with species using deep habitats exhibiting the highest values. 4. These general relationships between hydraulics and traits may be of importance in community ecology to develop predictive models to understand how fish communities change with the hydraulic environment.  相似文献

The present population structure of a species reflects the influence of population history as well as contemporary processes. To examine the relative importance of these factors in shaping the current population structure of Littorina keenae, we sequenced 762 base pairs of the mitochondrial ND6 and cytochrome b genes in 584 snails from 13 sites along the northeastern Pacific coast. Haplotype network analysis revealed a 'star-like' genealogy indicative of a recent population expansion. Nested clade and mismatch analyses also supported the hypothesis of sudden population expansion following a population bottleneck during the Last Glacial Maximum. Analysis of molecular variance and pairwise Phi(ST) showed no significant spatial population differentiation from Mexico to Oregon - not even across the recognized biogeographic boundary at Point Conception. This is probably due to high contemporary gene flow during the free-swimming larval stage of this snail. Surprisingly, we found a highly significant temporal population differentiation between a San Pedro sample from 1996 and one from 2005, which gave an estimate of effective population size (N(e)) of only 135. Nearly statistically significant changes in the frequency of a particular haplotype in three other populations over 2-3 years further support Hedgecock's 'sweepstakes' hypothesis. When by chance nearly all of the progeny from an aggregation of highly fecund sisters that possess a rare haplotype successfully recruit to become the next generation, the rare haplotype can become temporarily common across the entire species' range. This modification of the sweepstakes hypothesis can explain why the temporal variation that we observed was much greater than the spatial variation.  相似文献

Water relation parameters were measured in six congeneric lichen species with different requirements for water availability and with green algae (Peltigera aphthosa, Peltigera leucophlebia, Peltigera venosa) or cyanobacteria (Peltigera horizontalis, Peltigera praetextata, Peltigera rufescens) as main photobionts. Pressure–volume analysis was performed with a dewpoint hygrometer and integrated with anatomical analyses. The Peltigera species typical of arid environments were characterized by relatively lower osmotic potential (π0) and turgor loss point (ΨTLP), and higher values of bulk modulus of elasticity (?). Both π0 and ΨTLP were correlated with the size of medullary cells, while ? was negatively correlated with cell dimensions. The adaptive value of low ΨTLP might reside in the capability to maintain cell turgor for longer time intervals under dry conditions. High ? might allow xerophilous lichens to regain cell turgor more promptly even for small amounts of water uptake, thus enlarging the cumulative period of positive carbon balance in environments with fluctuating water availability. The influence of the photobiont type is also discussed.  相似文献

Terrestrial algae have been studied at widespread Antarctic localities. However, their diversity is not fully known as often collections have not been made from all habitats and techniques have been inadequate for recognition of the total flora. Identifications can be unreliable and are often left at generic level. Despite this it seems that they largely comprise cosmopolitan species but at a reduced diversity relative to other regions. There is a small element of endemic species which, in general, differ only slightly from related species elsewhere. Lack of base-line taxonomic knowledge, detailed characterization of environmental factors, and application of multivariate analysis restricts our ability to define communities and interpret their distribution patterns. Examples are provided where understanding would be greatly improved by more detailed analyses. Dispersal barriers could be operating both to and within Antarctica. However, local dispersal by wind seems readily accomplished. Overcoming dispersal barriers to Antarctica, and between ice-free localities within Antarctica, could present a greater problem. Investigation of long-distance transport of propagules by wind, birds and humans is needed.  相似文献

Elevational gradients have proven to be useful to examine key factors shaping species diversity patterns. This study examines the effects of elevation, area, geometric constraints, habitat type, environmental factors and land‐use intensity on terrestrial gastropod diversity patterns in Val Müstair, an alpine region influenced by different types of agricultural land use in the eastern Alps, Switzerland. Gastropods were sampled using a standardized method in 180 sites spanning an elevational range from 1215 to 2770 m and covering 11 different habitat types. A total of 11 102 specimens representing 70 species were recorded. Observed species richness, statistically estimated true richness (Chao) and geographically interpolated observed richness were used as measures of local species richness. The comparison of three alternative models (environmental, geometric constraints and gastropod abundance models) revealed that the environmental model explained most of the variation in all measures of local diversity. The best model combining the predictors of all three models showed that elevation, soil pH and habitat type affected all measures of local species richness. Similar analyses conducted at the level of 150‐m elevational bands showed that elevation was again the best predictor of species richness, while the area of the elevational band did not have any influence. However, in one out of the two measures of band species richness, the best model indicated that geometric constraints may also contribute to the observed pattern. At both spatial scales, all measures of species richness decreased with increasing elevation. An analysis of species‐specific life‐history traits showed that adult shell size of land snails decreased with increasing elevation. Most species with large shells were confined to lower elevations. The results indicate that environmental factors might be most important in shaping the observed patterns.  相似文献

The present study presents the results of a survey of a wide range of water bodies in Bangladesh to identify and describe Danio rerio habitat preferences. Field-based experiments were conducted to determine the vertical distribution of D. rerio in the water column, together with five other fish species commonly found in association with D. rerio. Danio rerio is a floodplain rather than riverine species, being most abundant in shallow lakes, ponds and ditches, typically in open locations with relatively clear water and abundant vegetation at the margins. It is commonly found in water bodies with a connection to rice cultivation and is more common in the north of Bangladesh than the south. Danio rerio occupies the whole of the water column and is observed as frequently in open water as amongst aquatic vegetation.  相似文献
