With the development of transgenic crops, concern has been expressed regarding the possible escape of genetically-engineered genes via hybridization with wild relatives. This is a potential hazard for sunflowers because wild sunflowers occur as weeds in fields where cultivated sunflowers are grown and hybridization between them has been reported. In order to quantify the potential for gene escape, two experimental stands of sunflower cultivars were planted at two sites with different rainfall and altitude profiles. Populations of wild plants were planted at different distances from each cultivar stand. An allele homozygous in the cultivar (6Pgd-3-a), but absent in the wild populations, was used as a molecular marker to document the incidence and rate of gene escape from the cultivar into the wild populations of sunflowers. Three-thousand achenes were surveyed to determine the amount of gene flow from the cultivated to the wild populations. The marginal wild populations (3 m from the cultivar) showed the highest percentage (27%) of gene flow. Gene flow was found to decrease with distance; however, gene flow occurred up to distances of 1000 m from the source population. These data suggest that physical distance alone will be unlikely to prevent gene flow between cultivated and wild populations of sunflowers. 相似文献

An interspecific correlation between pollen grain size and seed size is demonstrated by means of the phylogenetic regression, which allows for phylogenetic bias. The correlation was not explained by plant size, mass of DNA per cell, style length or breeding system, although the first three of these factors all correlated with both pollen size and seed size. Two interpretations, involving pollen competition and flower size, are discussed. There is also an interspecific correlation between pollen grain number per flower and ovule number per flower. Some consequences of these correlations for the interpretation of pollen-ovule ratios and sex allocation strategies are considered. 相似文献

Individual variation in seed size and seed production is high in many plant species. How does this variation affect seed-dispersing animals and, in turn, the fitness of individual plants? In this study, we first surveyed intraspecific variation in seed mass and production in a population of a Chinese white pine, Pinus armandii. For 134 target trees investigated in 2012, there was very high variation in seed size, with mean seed mass varying among trees almost tenfold, from 0.038 to 0.361 g. Furthermore, 30 of the 134 trees produced seeds 2 years later, and for these individuals there was a correlation in seed mass of 0.59 between years, implying consistent differences among individuals. For a subset of 67 trees, we monitored the foraging preferences of scatter-hoarding rodents on a total of 15,301 seeds: 8380 were ignored, 3184 were eaten in situ, 2651 were eaten after being cached, and 395 were successfully dispersed (cached and left intact). At the scale of individual seeds, seed mass affected almost every decision that rodents made to eat, remove, and cache individual seeds. At the level of individual trees, larger seeds had increased probabilities of both predation and successful dispersal: the effects of mean seed size on costs (predation) and benefits (caching) balanced out. Thus, despite seed size affecting rodent decisions, variation among trees in dispersal success associated with mean seed size was small once seeds were harvested. This might explain, at least in part, the maintenance of high variation in mean seed mass among tree individuals. 相似文献

山杏(Prunus armeniaca)是一种灌木状小乔木,在北京山区较为贫瘠、干旱的阳坡地带广泛分布。于2002年7月和2003年7~9月,采用种子收集筐估计了山杏种子的产量、种子雨的动态变化过程;在2003年的研究中,把收集筐中所获得的种子转入扣网之中以排除鸟类的影响,并设置了地表对照样方,调查和比较了扣网内和对照样方中、扣网和对照样方之间山杏种子被取食、搬离的动态变化及其差异性。研究表明,山杏种子的下落高峰发生于7月下旬至8月上旬,败育种子的下落早于完好种子且数量极少;在扣网内和对照样方中,被取食和被搬运的种子数量之间存在显著性差异,在扣网和对照样方之间.被取食和被搬运的种子数量的差异均未达到显著性水平;鼠类是种子雨期间取食山杏种子的主要动物.鸟类的作用可以忽略。 相似文献

The ontogenetic changes in stomatal size, frequency and conductance (gs) on abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces of sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L. Russian Mammoth) were examined under controlled environmental conditions. The stomatal frequency on the adaxial and abaxial
leaf surfaces decreased with leaf ontogeny and insertion level. The ratio of adaxial to abaxial stomatal frequency did not
change with leaf ontogeny and insertion level, and 42–44% of total stomata was apportioned to the adaxial surface. Ontogenetic
changes in stomatal pore length were detected and increased with ontogenesis. The stomatal length of both leaf surfaces had

Summary We examined seed-mass variation in 39 species (46 populations) of plants in eastern-central Illinois, USA. The coefficient of variation of seed mass commonly exceeded 20%. Significant variation in mean seed mass occurred among conspecific plants in most species sampled (by hierarchical ANOVA), averaging 38% of total variance. For most species, within-plant variation was the larger component of total variance, averaging 62% of total variance. Variation in seed mass among fruits within crops was significant in most species tested.We conclude that variation in seed mass among and within plants is widespread and common. There was little evidence of trade-offs between number of seeds and mean or variance of seed mass, and little correlational evidence of local competition for maternal resources. No consistent ecological (dispersal mode and growth form) correlates of variance of seed mass were evident. 相似文献

We studied spatial and temporal patterns in foraging activity among diurnal birds and nocturnal mammals at a semiarid site in northern Chile using artificial foraging trays. Small mammals foraged more extensively under shrubs than in open microhabitats, but birds showed no such selection. Moreover, avian foraging was more extensive than that by small mammals in all seasons and both microhabitats. Avian foraging was highly seasonal, as many birds at our site migrate to the Andean prepuna or to Patagonia during the austral summer. Birds have tended to be overshadowed by small mammals and ants in studies of granivory, but this study suggests that their importance may be underestimated in some systems. 相似文献

Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) is one of many plant species that produce large numbers of fruits containing parthenocarpic or otherwise empty or inviable seeds. We tested the hypothesis that production of empty fruits in this species results in reduced levels of predation on fertile seeds. In a population in west-central Utah, we estimated the proportion of fruits with filled seeds in trees suffering high levels of fruit destruction by the seed-eating bird Parus inornatus and in neighbouring trees similar in crown and fruit-crop size but suffering negligible predation. We found that the heavily attacked trees had higher proportions of filled seeds. Thus, juniper may benefit from producing fruits that contain no offspring. This is the first study to demonstrate that empty seeds may reduce predation by vertebrate seed eaters and the first to demonstrate discrimination based on seed filling at the level of whole plants. 相似文献

I used a combination of laboratory experiments and field surveys to examine the role that population-specific predation risk may play in shaping the life history strategy of a stream-dwelling isopod Lirceus fontinalis. Two focal populations were identified that were exposed to different predator types. The first population was exposed to larvae of the streamside salamander (Ambystoma barbouri) and the second to banded sculpin (Cottus carolinae). A laboratory experiment, in which different size classes of prey were offered simultaneously to individual predators, revealed that L. fontinalis suffered greatest mortality risk at small sizes with A. barbouri. Alternatively, with C. carolinae the risk of mortality was independent of size. Life history theory predicts that L. fontinalis from populations exposed to the gape-limited salamander larvae should be larger at maturity relative to individuals from populations exposed to C. carolinae. Field surveys on the two focal populations both within 1 year and across 4 years supported this prediction. Four other populations, two exposed to streamside salamander larvae and two to fish, provided additional support for the prediction. I concluded that L. fontinalis exhibited an adaptive response in size at maturity in response to population-specific predation risk. I then used gut content assays of the major predators to assess whether the population-specific life history strategies adopted by L. fontinalis were successful in avoiding predation. 相似文献

Using the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) approach in a model for the co-evolution of seed size and seed predation, I show that seed size variation within individual plants is favoured if there is a trade-off in the predator's attack rate for different seed sizes. A single seed size is not evolutionarily stable because a predator that is optimally adapted to one particular seed size cannot prevent invasion by plants with a different seed size. The model generates the following predictions. The ESS consists of a continuous range of seed sizes. Small seeds tend to be attacked more frequently than big seeds. Plants with many resources and plants with low (frequency-independent) juvenile mortality have more variable seeds than plants with few resources and a high juvenile mortality. Seed size variation is higher in fluctuating populations regulated by seed predation alone than in stable populations (partially) regulated by seedling competition. Predator searching behaviour does not directly affect the ESS seed size range, but may have an indirect effect by affecting population stability or the significance of seedling competition as a population regulating mechanism. Moreover, seed size distributions are found to be more skewed in favour of small seeds if predation is spatially non-uniform than if predation is more even. Application of the model to systems of several co-evolving plant and predator species is discussed. 相似文献

Seed size is an important plant fitness trait that can influence several steps between fruiting and the establishment of a
plant’s offspring. Seed size varies considerably within many plant species, yet the relevance of the trait for intra-specific
fruit choice by primates has received little attention. Primates may select certain seed sizes within a species for a number
of reasons, e.g. to decrease indigestible seed load or increase pulp intake per fruit. Olive baboons (Papio anubis, Cercopithecidae) are known to select seed size in unripe and mature pods of Parkia biglobosa (Mimosaceae) differentially, so that pods with small seeds, and an intermediate seed number, contribute most to dispersal
by baboons. We tested whether olive baboons likewise select for smaller ripe seeds within each of nine additional fruit species
whose fruit pulp baboons commonly consume, and for larger seeds in one species in which baboons feed on the seeds. Species
differed in fruit type and seed number per fruit. For five of these species, baboons dispersed seeds that were significantly
smaller than seeds extracted manually from randomly collected fresh fruits. In contrast, for three species, baboons swallowed
seeds that were significantly longer and/or wider than seeds from fresh fruits. In two species, sizes of ingested seeds and
seeds from fresh fruits did not differ significantly. Baboons frequently spat out seeds of Drypetes floribunda (Euphorbiaceae) but not those of other plant species having seeds of equal size. Oral processing of D. floribunda seeds depended on seed size: seeds that were spat out were significantly larger and swallowed seeds smaller, than seeds from
randomly collected fresh fruits. We argue that seed size selection in baboons is influenced, among other traits, by the amount

Feeding data collected concurrently on bearded sakis (Chiropotes satanas) and red and green macaws (Ara chloroptera) on a large island in Guri, Venezuela provides preliminary evidence that these two seed predators have similar diets. Individuals
of both species were equally capable of opening very hard, protected fruits. Of the seven fruit species used by macaws during
the study period, four species were also ingested by sakis at the same stage of ripeness, two species were ingested at different
stages of ripeness (macaws earlier than sakis), and one species was never observed to have been eaten by sakis. The second
finding, that macaws ingest young seeds of the Anacardiaceae and Burseraceae families and the bearded sakis ingest only the
ripe mesocarp of these species suggests that the most distinguishable difference in their diets might be a tolerance of toxins
by the macaws that act as feeding deterrents for the monkeys. Although we did not document the location of local clay licks
in eastern Venezuela, the use of clay licks by macaws in Peru (Munn, 1992) suggests that this activity (that is not practiced by the sakis) may be helpful in detoxifying or ameliorating the
effects of ingesting chemically protected fruit.
