The flounder, Paralichthys orbignyanus, is found in coastal and estuarine waters of the Western South Atlantic Ocean. It is being considered for aquaculture due to its high market price and wide tolerance to environmental factors such as salinity, pH, and nitrogenous compounds. The objective of this study was to characterize the ionic and osmotic regulation of P. orbignyanus over the range of its tolerated ambient salinities (0-40‰) and to evaluate the survival and growth in freshwater (0‰) and seawater (30‰) over 90 days. After 15 days of exposure to different salinities (0‰, 10‰, 20‰, 30‰ and 40‰), plasma osmolality and ionic (Na+, Cl, K+ and Ca2+) concentrations slightly increased with salinity. The isosmotic point was estimated as 328.6 mOsm kg−1 H2O and corresponded to 10.9‰ salinity. After 90 days, survival was similar in freshwater and seawater, but osmo- and ionoregulation was significantly affected in freshwater and flounders reared in this medium showed a lower growth rate than those reared in seawater. Based on the results from this study, P. orbignyanus can be characterized as a marine/estuarine euryhaline teleost capable of hyper/hypo iono- and osmoregulation over the fluctuating salinity regime faced by this species in the environment. Furthermore, results suggest that the lower growth rate exhibited by P. orbignyanus in freshwater could be due, at least partially, to a higher energy expenditure associated to a higher branchial Na+, K+-ATPase activity in this environment.  相似文献

This paper is intended to reveal effects of siphon cropping on siphon production of a tellinacean bivalve Nuttallia olivacea, an important prey for juvenile stone flounder. We carried out a two-way field experiment in which bivalves of three treatments (3-times siphon removal, 1-time removal, no removal) and four size classes (9-50 mm shell length) were caged and placed in the field for 3 mo. Growth of repeatedly-removed bivalves was inhibited, indicating reduced siphon growth (natural increase of siphon size according to somatic growth). However, siphon production of removed bivalves was larger than non-removed bivalves, possibly because of siphon regeneration. Juveniles (N. olivacea < 20 mm shell length) showed high growth performance. Their siphon growth was greater than their siphon regeneration. In all bivalves except juveniles, siphon regeneration was greater than siphon growth and engendered high siphon production. Siphon growth was dependent on bivalve size and was only slightly reduced by siphon loss, but siphon regeneration seemed to be dependent mostly on the extent of siphon loss. Greater siphon removal enhanced larger siphon production. These results indicate that intensive siphon cropping by juvenile stone flounder induces high siphon production without serious impact on N. olivacea.  相似文献

The mud flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Pleuronectiformes, Paralichthyidae) inhabits shallow waters of low salinities and mud bottoms in the temperate marine coastal regions of the Bonaerensean Ecoregion of the Argentinean Biogeographic Province in the south-western Atlantic Ocean. Specimens of P. orbignyanus were collected from Lagoa dos Patos (LDP) (southern Brazil), Mar Chiquita (MCH) and Marisol (MAR) both located in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and San Antonio Oeste (SAO) in the San Matías Gulf, Rio Negro (Argentina). A fragment of the mitochondrial DNA of the Control Region and seven microsatellite loci were characterized. In the Control Region, P. orbignyanus showed high variability, low nucleotide diversity, mild population expansion and a coalescence time of 35,000 years before the present. Flounders provided evidence of a genetic structure between the sampling sites LDP, MCH, MAR vs. SAO. On the other hand, P. orbignyanus displayed a lower to moderate contemporary genetic structure among all samples except between LDP and MCH. With no evidence of isolation by distance, this analysis supports a model of limited gene flow that is likely to be associated with a consistent larvae retention in all sampling sites. In addition, the present connectivity is ascribed to a lower migration process from SAO in the San Matías Gulf congruent with the prevailing littoral drift.  相似文献

Wound closure of the siphon of Scrobicularia plana (da Costa), after amputation of the tip, is complete within 48 h. Once the lesion has been plugged by connective tissue new epithelial tissue begins to grow and is fully formed 96 h after wounding. As the epithelial cells are being formed, regeneration of the siphon commences at a rate of ≈ 6 mg per wk. When expressed in terms of percentage weight increase of the total siphon weight (20%) this rate is comparable with that calculated for other bivalves. The siphon continues to grow until the original size is attained. When small amounts of siphon are removed (15% of total siphon), regeneration is of little energetic cost, even when animals are starved. When greater amounts are, however, removed from unfed animals (e.g. 50% of the total siphon) regeneration takes place at the expense of the body condition, the animal using 0.6 kJ of body energy to replace 0.2 kJ of siphon.  相似文献

Ascidians have powerful capacities for regeneration but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we examine oral siphon regeneration in the solitary ascidian Ciona intestinalis. Following amputation, the oral siphon rapidly reforms oral pigment organs (OPO) at its distal margin prior to slower regeneration of proximal siphon parts. The early stages of oral siphon reformation include cell proliferation and re-growth of the siphon nerves, although the neural complex (adult brain and associated organs) is not required for regeneration. Young animals reform OPO more rapidly after amputation than old animals indicating that regeneration is age dependent. UV irradiation, microcautery, and cultured siphon explant experiments indicate that OPOs are replaced as independent units based on local differentiation of progenitor cells within the siphon, rather than by cell migration from a distant source in the body. The typical pattern of eight OPOs and siphon lobes is restored with fidelity after distal amputation of the oral siphon, but as many as 16 OPOs and lobes can be reformed following proximal amputation near the siphon base. Thus, the pattern of OPO regeneration is determined by cues positioned along the proximal distal axis of the oral siphon. A model is presented in which columns of siphon tissue along the proximal-distal axis below pre-existing OPO are responsible for reproducing the normal OPO pattern during regeneration. This study reveals previously unknown principles of oral siphon and OPO regeneration that will be important for developing Ciona as a regeneration model in urochordates, which may be the closest living relatives of vertebrates.  相似文献

The inhalant siphon of the tellinacean bivalve Nuttallia olivacea is an important prey item for juvenile stone flounder Platichthys bicoloratus in estuaries in Japan. We examined quantitative siphon regeneration of N. olivacea in rearing experiments of siphon-removed bivalves (> 30 mm shell length) both in the laboratory and in their natural habitat. Under laboratory conditions, siphon-removed bivalves regenerated lost tissues quantitatively at 15 and 25 °C 1 mo after siphon removal, although regeneration was incomplete. A 3-mo caging experiment in the field showed that great regeneration occurred in siphon-removed bivalves. However, the siphon weight of removed bivalves was significantly smaller than that of non-amputated bivalves, suggesting the incomplete regeneration. In a 1-mo caging experiment, bivalves that had approximately 15% of their siphons amputated were selected at some intervals to illustrate the quantitative regeneration process. Estimated daily siphon production was remarkably high only a few days after amputation. It decreased greatly thereafter, but regeneration was not completed within 30 d. These results indicate that bivalves regenerate siphons rapidly just after losing siphon tissues and then regeneration is slowed down before it is completed.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to verify the viability of frozen B. orbignyanus sperm cells after freezing with dilution media containing different concentrations of the melatonin and after different freezing times. Semen from 15 males was collected and pooled as five pools from three random animals. Oocytes (100) from three females were separately used for fertilization. There were three treatments: (C) Control Medium: 90% of extender Beltsville thawing solution (5% concentration) + 10% methylglycol (MG); (M1) Control Medium + 1 mM melatonin; and (M2) Control Medium + 2 mM melatonin. Sperm samples were diluted in media at a final proportion of 1:4 [125 μl sperm (25% V/V) + 337.5 μl BTS (65% V/V) + 37.5 μl MG (10% V/V)]. Melatonin was added at final solution. Three Dry shipper freezing times were used: T1 (15 min), T2 (12 h) and T3 (24 h). The samples were transferred, stored in a cryobank and thawed in a water bath at 60 °C for 5 s and evaluated concerning viability, morphology and fertilization rate. B. orbignyanus semen frozen in M2 presented the highest fertilization rate (8.40 ± 2.54%). The highest vitality (85.2 ± 2.8%), motility (64.63 ± 8.3%), motility duration (84.22 ± 11.4 s) and progressive motility (17.01 ± 1.2%) rates were maintained for M2. The highest number of altered cells was observed in C (57.4 ± 5.9%). Melatonin at 2 mmol L−1 associated with the cryoprotectant methylglycol in cryopreservation could be used to improve a cryobank for endangered Brycon orbignyanus populations.  相似文献

The widely held view that neurogenic placodes are vertebrate novelties has been challenged by morphological and molecular data from tunicates suggesting that placodes predate the vertebrate divergence. Here, we examine requirements for the development of the tunicate atrial siphon primordium, thought to share homology with the vertebrate otic placode. In vertebrates, FGF signaling is required for otic placode induction and for later events following placode invagination, including elaboration and patterning of the inner ear. We show that results from perturbation of the FGF pathway in the ascidian Ciona support a similar role for this pathway: inhibition with MEK or Fgfr inhibitor at tailbud stages in Ciona results in a larva which fails to form atrial placodes; inhibition during metamorphosis disrupts development of the atrial siphon and gill slits, structures which form where invaginated atrial siphon ectoderm apposes pharyngeal endoderm. We show that laser ablation of atrial primordium ectoderm also results in a failure to form gill slits in the underlying endoderm. Our data suggest interactions required for formation of the atrial siphon and highlight the role of atrial ectoderm during gill slit morphogenesis.  相似文献

A new benthic foraminifer is described as Siphodinarella costata n. gen., n. sp. from Coniacian shallow-water platform-interior carbonates of Slovenia and Croatia. The new foraminifer is found in skeletal wackestone in association with small benthic foraminifera, thaumatoporellaceans, and calcimicrobes (Decastronema, Girvanella-type tubes). The existence of an internal siphon in Siphodinarella n. gen. is interpreted as an entosolenian tube and discussed in terms of its generic and suprageneric importance.  相似文献

Study of Turonian echinoids from Gabon store section allowed us to distinguish 10 species belonging to 2 genera: Mecaster pseudofourneli (Péron et Gauthier 1878), Mecaster toucasanus (d’Orbigny, 1854), Mecaster africanus (Coquand, 1862), Mecaster semicavatus (Peron et Gauthier 1880), Mecaster verneuili (Desor, 1847), Mecaster cf. orbignyanus (Desor, 1857), Mecaster palpebratus (Loriol, 1888), Mecaster sp.1, Mecaster sp. 2, Epiaster michelini (Agassiz) 1847. All species are found for the first time in Gabonese coastal basin. The composition and the distribution of echinoids fauna and the sedimentary characteristics indicate a proximal shallow platform deposit environment, with warm water and soft substrate. Two types of depositional environment are suggested: (1) a deep part of the proximal platform, represented by silty limestones and (2) a shallower part of the proximal platform, represented by limestones.  相似文献

Although high-impact hemodynamic forces are thought to lead to cerebral aneurysmal change, little is known about the aneurysm formation on the inner aspect of vascular bends such as the internal carotid artery (ICA) siphon where wall shear stress (WSS) is expected to be low. This study evaluates the effect of vessel curvature and hemodynamics on aneurysm formation along the inner carotid siphon. Catheter 3D-rotational angiographic volumes of 35 ICA (10 aneurysms, 25 controls) were evaluated in 3D for radius of curvature and peak curvature of the siphon bend, followed by univariate statistical analysis. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were performed on patient-derived models after aneurysm removal and on synthetic variants of increasing curvature. Peak focal siphon curvature was significantly higher in aneurysm bearing ICAs (0.36±0.045 vs. 0.30±0.048 mm−1, p=0.003), with no difference in global radius of curvature (p=0.36). In CFD simulations, increasing parametric curvature tightness (from 5 to 3 mm radius) resulted in dramatic increase of WSS and WSS gradient magnitude (WSSG) on the inner wall of the bend. In patient-derived data, the location of aneurysms coincided with regions of low WSS (<4 Pa) flanked by high WSS and WSSG peaks. WSS peaks correlated with the aneurysm neck. In contrast, control siphon bends displayed low, almost constant, WSS and WSSG profiles with little spatial variation. High bend curvature induces dynamically fluctuating high proximal WSS and WSSG followed by regions of flow stasis and recirculation, leading to local conditions known to induce destructive vessel wall remodeling and aneurysmal initiation.  相似文献

Purpose

Anterior segment neovascularization (ASNV) could be a masquerade for ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS) in diabetic patients which misleads diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of our study is to find the relationship between blood flow velocity in carotid siphon and the development of ASNV in diabetic.

Methods

We reviewed 34 eyes of 17 diabetic patients who had Transcranial Color Doppler (TCD) examination with unilateral ASNV. The circulatory parameters of both eyes of each patient were compared and analyzed. In addition, 9 patients with more than 50% stenosis of extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) and low velocity flow through TCD had been treated by carotid revascularization surgery.

Results

The maximal velocity in systole (Vmax) of carotid siphon (SCA) was lower in the eyes with ASNV than in the eyes without ASNV (P<0.05). ASNV of all the 9 patients regressed totally and BCVA improved significantly (P<0.05). Stenosis of ICA and arm-retina time (ART) decreased significantly (P<0.01) and SCA and ophthalmic artery (OA) increased significantly (P<0.01).

Conclusions

Our study showed ASNV could be a masquerade for OIS in patients with diabetic retinopathy. The decreased blood flow velocity in carotid siphon is related to the development of ASNV. Circulatory parameters screening of SCA by TCD is important to help us to evaluate the blood flow in SCA, the possibility of development of ASNV, and the prognosis of the patient. Interference such as carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or carotid artery stenting (CAS) can be performed if necessary to improve the blood flow in SCA and make ASNV regression.  相似文献

Specimens of flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Jenyns, 1842) were collected in Bahía Blanca estuary between February 1997 and January 1998, and their feeding habits were examined in relation to season and size class. The stomach contents of 823 specimens, ranging from 70 to 875 mm total length, were analysed. Their diet included organisms from 17 taxa. The highest vacuity index values were found during autumn and winter. The stomach fullness index indicated that flounders increased their feeding activity between October and March, reaching a highest point in February and decreasing after February. Fish were the primary prey item in frequency, number and weight, followed by crustaceans, such as shrimps and crabs. A seasonal and size class variation was detected in the diet. During summer all-size flounders consumed mainly fish. In autumn, for all-size classes the main food were fish and crustaceans even though fish were dominant in terms of biomass. In spring, crustaceans (mysids Arthromysis magellanica (Cunningham), shrimps Artemesia longinaris Bate, and prawns Pleoticus muelleri (Bate)) were the dominant prey in terms of number and biomass for flounders ≤ 450 mm TL. Size classes larger than 451 mm TL fed on crustaceans and fish though the most important prey item in terms of biomass was fish. In Bahía Blanca estuary,P. orbignyanus evidenced mainly an ichthyophagou – carcinophagous diet. The results collected from the present study lead to conclude that P. orbignyanus shows, in this region, a clear preference for fish.  相似文献

Remains of vertebrates of Villafranchian age have been found in the Nuraghe Su Casteddu (Nuoro, Sardinia) formation. The fossiliferous layer contain a rich fauna of continental molluscs. The composition of the vertebrate fauna is as follows: Rana sp., ? Coluber sp., Aves indet., Episoriculus aff. gibberodon PETENYI, Talpa sp., Chiroptera indet. and Rodentia indet. It is the first discovery of Villafranchian vetebrates in Sardinia.  相似文献

In this study, a systematic review of researches published about the determining factors in the intention of the use of devices and digital technology in older adults has been carried out. The technology acceptance model is the framework used. The main result of the analysis of 60 scientific articles published between 2010 and 2020 has been summarized after a bibliographic research and a subsequent selection process in the most important bibliographic databases: Web of Science (n = 45), Scopus (n = 66) and Google Scholar (n = 224). It has been proved the predominance of quantitative studies with a prevalence of study factors that associate the intention to use technology with: Facilitating conditions, experience, health, social support, emotions, perceived enjoyment, perceived satisfaction in using technology, anxiety, perceived risk, motivation, cost, subjective norm and social influence. The results of the systematic review allow us to conclude the urgent need to incorporate new research on the identification and influence of these factors that stand between older adults and technology, as possible barriers or facilitators of use.  相似文献

Strawberry plants have been regenerated from petioles and flower buds Petiole segments derived from strawberry plants(Fragaria vesca L. andFragaria xananassa Duch. cvs. Gorella and Redgauntlet) maintainedin vitro have been cultured on the Gambobg’s. agar medium supplemented with 2,4-D (2 mg 1?1) either alone or with kinetin or BAP (0.1 mg I?1 or 1 mg I?1). The calli thus obtained have been transferred to media differing from the first ones only by the nature and the concentration of the growth regulators used. One or two months later, shoots appeared on these calli. The influence of the media hormonal content on plant regeneration has been observed. Moreover, genotypic variations have also been investigated: the wild strawberry exhibited the greatest organogenic capacity. Shoots have also been obtained from flower buds(Fragaria xananassa Duch. cvs. Fern, Hummi Gento, Gorella and Redgauntlet). In this case, shoots appeared directly on small calli derived from the peduncular base of the flower buds. These regenerations have been observed, without changes of media, on the Lee and de Fossabd’s agar medium.  相似文献

A defensin-like peptide was previously detected in hemocytes of Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum). In the current study, we cloned and characterized this defensin, designated MCdef. Cloning produced a full-length gene sequence of 201 bp predicted to encode a 66-amino-acid precursor protein maturing to a 44-amino-acid residue. Amino acid sequence analysis showed that MCdef is similar to defensins from marine mollusks and ticks. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that MCdef is closely related to defensins from Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mediterranean mussel) and Crassostrea gigas (Pacific cupped oyster). The three-dimensional structure of MCdef was modeled using the solution structure of C. gigas defensin as a template. With the exception of three variable loop areas, the modeled structure of MCdef was identical to that of C. gigas defensin. MCdef antiserum was raised against a synthetic MCdef peptide and verified by Western blotting using recombinant MCdef. RT-PCR analysis demonstrated high levels of MCdef mRNA in hemocytes and adductor, foot, gill, mantle, palp, and siphon tissues of Vibrio tapetis-infected Manila clams, whereas in V. tapetis-uninfected Manila clams, the level of MCdef mRNA was low in adductor, palp, and siphon tissues and even lower in the other tested tissues. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed high MCdef expression was detected in the gill, the mantle, and the digestive tubules of the diverticulum of V. tapetis-infected Manila clams. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the purified rMCdef was determined. MCdef showed highest activity against Streptococcus iniae and Staphylococcus aureus.  相似文献

BackgroundSeborrheic dermatitis (SD) is considered the second most frequently dermatosis associated with the genus Malassezia but little is the knowledge about the epidemiology of this association.AimsTo determinate the prevalence of Malassezia species associated with SD and to analyse their distribution according to the location of the lesion on the body.MethodsThis study was performed in Resistencia city, located in a subtropical area in northeast Argentina. In this study, 226 skin samples from patients with lesions compatible with SD were studied. Age, gender and body sites lesion were recorded. Strains were identified by PCR-RFLP.ResultsOne hundred and thirty-one positive cultures were obtained. Association of 2 species was detected in 10 cases; therefore, 141 strains were isolated. Malasezzia globosa (43.3%) was the most frequent species isolated, followed by Malasezzia furfur (20.6%), Malasezzia sympodialis (17%) and Malasezzia restricta (16.3%). Three isolates of Malasezzia slooffiae (2.1%) and one of Malasezzia pachydermatis (0.7%) were obtained. Statistical significance (P < 0.05) was found between M. globosa and scalp. Malasezzia restricta was isolated only in head areas.ConclusionsThis study suggests M. globosa is the most related species to SD. The prevalence of other species is different from that reported by other authors. Only M. globosa and M. restricta presented a pattern of relationship with the body sites of the lesions. It is noteworthy is the isolation of the zoophylic species M. pachydermatis. The Malassezia genus ecology and the pathogenic role of its species are still under study.
