Relations between activities of neurons simultaneously recorded in the left and right sensorimotor brain cortices of rabbits were analyzed in a series of experiments before the induction of the immobilization state ("animal hypnosis"), in the state of immobilization, and after its termination. The total baseline percent of significant correlations between activities of neighboring (within 50 microns) neurons in the left hemisphere was significantly lower than in the right hemisphere. This characteristic of the left hemisphere changed neither in the immobilization state nor after its termination. In the right-hemisphere cortex, the total percent of correlations between neighboring neurons significantly decreased during immobilization and returned to the baseline level after the termination of this state. In contrast, percent of correlations between the activities of remote (within 500 microns) neurons in the right-hemisphere did not change during immobilization, whereas in the left cortex it changed significantly and reached its baseline level after the normalization of rabbit's state. Further analysis showed that the revealed cortical interhemispheric asymmetry is underlain by asymmetric activities of individual neurons and small neuronal populations. Thus, for example, changes in the structure of interneuronal correlations in cortical microareas of the left and macroareas of the right hemispheres could be of different directions, whereas correlated activities in microareas of the right and macroareas of the left-hemispheres could change synergetically. In other words, asymmetry was revealed at different levels of neuronal integration (neuronal pairs, micro- or macrogroups of neurons). This finding testifies to a mosaic character of neuronal activity, which finally results in the general functional asymmetry during the "animal hypnosis". Certain changes in the structure of functional relations between neurons of the sensorimotor cortex that developed in the state of "animal hypnosis" persisted and even augmented after the termination of this state.  相似文献

Breathing patterns were recorded during "animal hypnosis" in seven Chinchilla rabbits. The state of "animal hypnosis" was evoked by the hand pressure on the thorax and the waist of a rabbit. Breathing pattern was recorded by means of an elastic coal-powder element that was set round the rabbit's thorax. Distortions of the breathing patterns in the active state and in the course of hypnosis development were marked by numbers 0, 1, 2. In all rabbits, modifications of the breathing patterns depended on the features of the animal state: quiet state, tension, and "animal hypnosis".  相似文献

The character of interaction between two dominant foci (motivation hunger dominant and "animal hypnosis") which had been formed in the rabbit brain was ambiguous: the foci could either function simultaneously or compete. In the first case, summation food reactions were observed when the hunger dominant was tested during a hypnotic episode against the background of deep and continuous hypnotic state. Brain thermal activity was asymmetric the temperature being higher in the parieto-occipital areas of the left hemisphere. If the hypnosis inhibited the hunger dominant, summation reactions were absent and the brain temperature was higher in the parieto-occipital areas of the right hemisphere. In cases when despite the repeated immobilization sessions the hunger dominant prevented from induction of hypnosis, the left-hemisphere thermal dominance persisted against the background of general brain cooling.  相似文献

Multiunit activity was recorded in left and right sensorimotor cortex of rabbits in the state of tonic immobility. After the first immobilization session, the discharge frequency changed in 47% cells in the right hemisphere: 30% decreased their frequency, and 17% increased. In the left hemisphere, only 18% cells changed their discharge frequency (13% decreased and 5% increased). Reciprocal changes in discharge frequency could be observed in the neighboring neurons (recorded by the same electrode). Several days later, after the second immobilization session, the interhemispheric difference in the number of neurons, whose activity changed, almost disappeared (21% neurons in the right and 24% neurons in the left hemispheres). The relationship between the number of cortical neurons, which increased and decreased their activities in the state of "hypnosis" also became similar in the right and left hemispheres. A suggestion about the involvement of cortical neurons in organization of the state of "animal hypnosis" was made.  相似文献

Spike trains of individual neurons in the sensorimotor cortex detected in simultaneous multiunit records from the left and right rabbit brain hemispheres were analyzed in the baseline state, during immobilization ("animal hypnosis"), and after the termination of this state. The crosscorrelation analysis of pulse series revealed a relationship between the moments of spike generation by neurons of the left and right hemispheres. A significant correlation between the spike trains was considered as an interaction between the neurons (i.e., mutual influence of the cells on each other). It was shown that the strength of the effects of left-hemispheric neurons on cells of the right hemisphere could significantly vary (as compared to baseline) at any stage of the experiment and in any of the time periods analyzed. The strength of the effects activity by neurons of the right-hemispheres on cells of the left-hemispheres significantly changed only after the termination of the immobilization state and in substantially lower time limits.  相似文献

The electrical activity of the left and right sensorimotor cortex and left and right dorsal hippocampus (CA3 fields) was recorded during "animal hypnosis" in rabbits. The "animal hypnosis" produced asymmetry in the spectral power of the hippocampal electrical activity due to an increase in the power of delta 1, delta 2, and theta 1 components in the left-hippocampus and decrease in the spectral power in the same ranges in the right-hippocampus. Hemispheric asymmetry in the electrical activity during the "animal hypnosis" was also expressed in the indices of coherence between the sensorimotor cortex and hippocampus. EEG coherence between the left sensorimotor cortex and left hippocampus in the delta 1, theta 1, and theta 2 ranges was higher than that between the right-side structures.  相似文献

Two kinds of dominanta were simultaneously formed under conditions of chronic experiments in rabbits. The motor polarization dominanta was formed under exposure of the right sensorimotor cortex of an animal to direct anodic current, and the state of "animal hypnosis" (the second dominanta) was induced. Animal behavior and electrophysiological characteristics were recorded. It was shown that the "animal hypnosis" induced at the optimum of the right motor polarization dominanta inhibited the motor reaction of the "dominant" extremity to testing stimuli. After the "animal hypnosis session, exposure of the right sensorimotor cortex to anodic current produced the latent excitation focus, which did not reach the level of summation. Two days later, exposure to testing stimuli developed the latent foci at first in the right cortex and then in subcortical structures. In the course of recovery of the motor polarization dominanta and its further change for the state characteristic of the "animal hypnosis", the patterns of cortical EEG coherence in the delta range typical of each kind of dominanta alternated in parallel with the time course of state changes.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, simultaneous continuous recording of the circadian cycle of behavioral reactions and cardiac activity of freshwater crayfish Astacus astacus and Procambarus clarkii was carried out. A non-invasive fiber-optic method of recording of the heart rate (HR) was used. The obtained data were analyzed by the method of variational pulsometry (VP). It was revealed that certain values of HR and characteristics of VP corresponded to the physiological states of active wakefulness and rest. It was found that during long immobilization of crayfish it is possible to identify the states of operative rest and sleep by the animal behavioral reactions and parameters of cardiac activity. Crayfish were studied in the state of artificially evoked immobilization (“animal hypnosis”). During this state, a high HR level, an increase of indexes of tension and autonomic equilibrium, and changes of other VP characteristics were observed. It is suggested that the different level of cardiac activity in different physiological states of crayfish (active wakefulness, operative rest, sleep, and “animal hypnosis”) is regulated by nervous influences analogous to sympathetic and parasympathetic influences in vertebrates. It was concluded that freshwater crayfish as a representative of the highly organized invertebrates can serve an effective model for studying mechanisms of sleep-like states and “animal hypnosis” in animals.  相似文献

A stationary excitation focus produced in the sensorimotor cortex of a rabbit by rhythmic electrodermal paw stimulation was manifested in the reaction to a testing sound stimulus earlier indifferent for the animal. Regardless of the stimulated paw (left or right), reactions to the testing stimuli appeared approximately in the equal percent of cases (70.7% and 71.5%, respectively). After a single-trial induction of the "animal hypnosis" state, it was difficult to produce the dominant focus by simulation of the left paw, whereas the results of the right-paw stimulation did not differ from those obtained during control stimulation. Consequently, the influence of hypnosis on defensive stationary excitation foci in different hemispheres was not the same.  相似文献

The electrical activity of the right and left sensorimotor and premotor cortical areas and right and left medulary reticular formation was recorded during "animal hypnosis" in rabbits. In this state, the spectral power of potentials (predominantly, in the delta-range) recorded from the left reticular formation was higher than that recorded from the right side. The value of the function of coherence between the right and left reticular recordings was decreased to 0.1-0.2 in the whole frequency range. The tight-side intrahemispheric coherence between the activities recorded from the sensorimotor cortex and reticular formation was higher than respective left-side values, whereas the coherent relations between the activities recorded from the reticular formation and premotor cortex were not changed (as compared to nonhypnotic state).  相似文献

Behavioral changes and accompanying morphological neuron-glia reorganization in the rat brain were compared after emotional stress. Wistar rats (n = 20) were stressed by the interrupted immobilization, which was carried out during one week 7-8 h daily. Behavioral immobilization of rats was accompanied by an increase in horizontal and vertical locomotors activity and in duration of the III and IV phases of grooming ("comfortable" grooming) in the "open field" test. The morphometric studies showed a statistically significant increase in the density of hypoxic neurons in the right neocortex of the experimental animals as compared with control. Hypoxic changes in neurons were of functional character. Experimental rats can be considered as a model of redistribution of functional brain activity with preferential intensification of the left brain hemisphere.  相似文献

The neural mechanisms underlying hypnosis and especially the modulation of pain perception by hypnosis remain obscure. Using PET we first described the distribution of regional cerebral blood flow during the hypnotic state. Hypnosis relied on revivification of pleasant autobiographical memories and was compared to imaging autobiographical material in "normal alertness". The hypnotic state was related to the activation of a widespread set of cortical areas involving occipital, parietal, precentral, premotor, and ventrolateral prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortices. This pattern of activation shares some similarities with mental imagery, from which it mainly differs by the relative deactivation of precuneus. Second, we looked at the anti-nociceptive effects of hypnosis. Compared to the resting state, hypnosis reduced pain perception by approximately 50%. The hypnosis-induced reduction of affective and sensory responses to noxious thermal stimulation were modulated by the activity in the midcingulate cortex (area 24a'). Finally, we assessed changes in cerebral functional connectivity related to hypnosis. Compared to normal alertness (i.e., rest and mental imagery), the hypnotic state, significantly enhanced the functional modulation between midcingulate cortex and a large neural network involved in sensory, affective, cognitive and behavioral aspects of nociception. These findings show that not only pharmacological but also psychological strategies for pain control can modulate the cerebral network involved in noxious perception.  相似文献

Behavioural specialization was analyzed of hypothalamic and limbic neurones, with their activity recorded in rabbits during food-acquisition behaviour. The neurones with activity changed during staying of the animal in a definite place of the cage or during behavioural acts, characteristic of a specific behaviour in the cage, are considered as specialized in relation to the most "new" systems, acquired by the rabbit directly during learning of the given behaviour. Neurones with the activity changed with rabbit's turns, i.e. connected with behavioural acts, which the rabbit has not specially learnt, are considered specialized in relation to more "old" inborn systems. Neurones, in which no constant connection with any part of the studied behaviour was observed, are related to the most "ancient" systems. Comparison of the number of hypothalamic and limbic neurones of different groups showed that in the cortex there were some more neurones specialized in relation to behavioural acts, which were formed directly during learning of the rabbit in the experimental cage.  相似文献

Different behavioral reactivity of rabbit groups differentiated by locomotor activity in the "open field" was revealed during exposure to emotional stimuli (rustle, loud sound, pressuring on back of the neck, vibroacoustic tactile stimulation of an ear). In passive rabbits, the active locomotor reactions were induced harder and freezing was obtained easier than in active animals. During exposure to sound stimuli, passive rabbits increased their locomotion more rarely than active animals, pressing on back of the neck produced longer freezing, a threshold of defensive ear shaking in response to a vibroacoustic stimulus in passive animals was highest. Training to mild immobilization increased the threshold of defensive responses in active rabbits and animals of the intermediate type. Changes in respiratory parameters were correlated with behavioral reactions to emotional stimuli. The duration of exhalation and respiratory cycle increased during freezing and increased during enhanced locomotion. The duration of inhalation decreased in response to emotional stimuli irrespective of a behavioral reaction. The respiratory reactions to emotional stimuli differed in rabbits of different groups. The respiratory rate more frequently changed in passive rabbits than in animals of other groups. Passive animals reacted mainly by exhalation, active rabbits and animals from the intermediate group predominantly responded by inhalation.  相似文献

考察大鼠静卧状态下,相同强度刺激信号作用于前穿质通道时,海马齿状回颗粒细胞诱发电场电位的兴奋性突触后电位EPSP和群峰电位PS之间的一种负相关变化关系,即EPSP斜率减小时,PS幅值增加。采用同时记录齿状回诱发电位和大脑皮层ECoG电位的方法,分析诱发电位各成份和ECoG功率谱密度之间的关系,可见ECoG出现低频高幅慢波时,与ECoG出现高频低幅快波时比较,齿状回诱发响应的PS幅值较大,而EPSP斜率较小。这可能是因为:中脑网状结构上行激励系统通过丘脑-皮层回路使ECoG去同步化(出现低幅快波ECoG)时,同时也通过另一途径,即隔-海马连接,激活了作用于齿状回颗粒细胞胞体的抑制性神经通路,使得颗粒细胞兴奋性降低,从而使反应动作电位总和的PS幅值减小。在麻醉剂乌拉坦作用下,EPSP和PS的负相关变化减小或消失。这种负相关现象对于研究海马的生理功能具有重要的意义。  相似文献

Background

Identifying and quantifying pathological changes in brain electrical activity is important for investigations of brain injury and neurological disease. An example is the development of epilepsy, a secondary consequence of traumatic brain injury. While certain epileptiform events can be identified visually from electroencephalographic (EEG) or electrocorticographic (ECoG) records, quantification of these pathological events has proved to be more difficult. In this study we developed MATLAB-based software that would assist detection of pathological brain electrical activity following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and present our MATLAB code used for the analysis of the ECoG.

Methods

Software was developed using MATLAB(?) and features of the open access EEGLAB. EEGgui is a graphical user interface in the MATLAB programming platform that allows scientists who are not proficient in computer programming to perform a number of elaborate analyses on ECoG signals. The different analyses include Power Spectral Density (PSD), Short Time Fourier analysis and Spectral Entropy (SE). ECoG records used for demonstration of this software were derived from rats that had undergone traumatic brain injury one year earlier.

Results

The software provided in this report provides a graphical user interface for displaying ECoG activity and calculating normalized power density using fast fourier transform of the major brain wave frequencies (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta1, Beta2 and Gamma). The software further detects events in which power density for these frequency bands exceeds normal ECoG by more than 4 standard deviations. We found that epileptic events could be identified and distinguished from a variety of ECoG phenomena associated with normal changes in behavior. We further found that analysis of spectral entropy was less effective in distinguishing epileptic from normal changes in ECoG activity.

Conclusion

The software presented here was a successful modification of EEGLAB in the Matlab environment that allows detection of epileptiform ECoG signals in animals after TBI. The code allows import of large EEG or ECoG data records as standard text files and uses fast fourier transform as a basis for detection of abnormal events. The software can also be used to monitor injury-induced changes in spectral entropy if required. We hope that the software will be useful for other investigators in the field of traumatic brain injury and will stimulate future advances of quantitative analysis of brain electrical activity after neurological injury or disease.

Posterior hypothalamus was found to take part in the inhibitory control of the paradoxical sleep executive mechanisms responsible for the ECoG desynchronisation and phasic events. Functional activity of the posterior hypothalamus seems to be at its lowest during the paradoxical sleep stage as characterised by phasic events and the ECoG desynchronisation, and increases during the stage with alpha-like activity in the ECoG and absence of phasic events, the latter having, probably, a "sentinel" function.  相似文献

Human cortical area MT+ (hMT+) is known to respond to visual motion stimuli, but its causal role in the conscious experience of motion remains largely unexplored. Studies in non-human primates demonstrate that altering activity in area MT can influence motion perception judgments, but animal studies are inherently limited in assessing subjective conscious experience. In the current study, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), intracranial electrocorticography (ECoG), and electrical brain stimulation (EBS) in three patients implanted with intracranial electrodes to address the role of area hMT+ in conscious visual motion perception. We show that in conscious human subjects, reproducible illusory motion can be elicited by electrical stimulation of hMT+. These visual motion percepts only occurred when the site of stimulation overlapped directly with the region of the brain that had increased fMRI and electrophysiological activity during moving compared to static visual stimuli in the same individual subjects. Electrical stimulation in neighboring regions failed to produce illusory motion. Our study provides evidence for the sufficient causal link between the hMT+ network and the human conscious experience of visual motion. It also suggests a clear spatial relationship between fMRI signal and ECoG activity in the human brain.  相似文献

A hidden excitation focus (dominanta focus) was produced in the rabbit's CNS by threshold electrical stimulation of the left forelimb with the frequency of 0.5 Hz. As a rule, after the formation of the focus, pairs of neurons with prevailing two-second rhythm in their correlated activity were revealed both in the left and right sensorimotor cortices (with equal probabilities 29.3 and 32.4%, respectively). After "animal hypnosis" induction, the total percent of neuronal pairs with the prevalent dominanta-induced rhythm decreased significantly only in the right hemisphere (21%). After the termination of the "animal hypnosis" state, percent of neuronal pairs in the right cortex with prevailing two-second rhythm significantly increasead if the neurons in a pair were neighboring and decreased if they were remote from each other. Similar changes after the hypnotization were not found in the left cortex. Analysis of correlated activity of neuronal pairs with regard to amplitude characteristics showed that for both the right and left hemispheres, the prevalence of the two-second rhythm was more frequently observed in crosscorrelation histograms constructed regarding discharges of neurons with the lowest spike amplitude (in the right hemisphere) or the lowest and mean amplitudes (in the left hemisphere) selected from multiunit records.  相似文献
