The objective of this study was to develop an X-ray computed tomographic method for measuring pulmonary arterial dimensions and locations within the intact rat lung. Lungs were removed from rats and their pulmonary arterial trees were filled with perfluorooctyl bromide to enhance X-ray absorbance. The lungs were rotated within the cone of the X-ray beam projected from a microfocal X-ray source onto an image intensifier, and 360 images were obtained at 1 degrees increments. The three-dimensional image volumes were reconstructed with isotropic resolution using a cone beam reconstruction algorithm. The vessel diameters were obtained by fitting a functional form to the image of the vessel circular cross section. The functional form was chosen to take into account the point spread function of the image acquisition and reconstruction system. The diameter measurements obtained over a range of vascular pressures were used to characterize the distensibility of the rat pulmonary arteries. The distensibility coefficient alpha [defined by D(P) = D(0)(1 + alphaP), where D(P) is the diameter at intravascular pressure (P)] was approximately 2.8% mmHg and independent of vessel diameter in the diameter range (about 100 to 2,000 mm) studied.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the nitric oxide (NO) concentration and vessel diameter dependence of the pulmonary arterial dilation induced by inhaled NO. Isolated dog lung lobes were situated between a microfocal X-ray source and X-ray detector and perfused with either blood or plasma. Boluses of radiopaque contrast medium were injected into the lobar artery under control conditions, when the pulmonary arteries were constricted by infusion of serotonin and when the serotonin infusion was accompanied by inhalation of from 30 to 960 parts/million NO. Arterial diameter measurements were obtained from X-ray images of vessels having control diameters in the 300- to 3,400-microm range. Serotonin constricted the vessels throughout the size range studied, with an average decrease in diameter of approximately 20%. The fractional reversal of the serotonin-induced constriction by inhaled NO was directly proportional to inhaled NO concentration, inversely proportional to vessel size, and greater with plasma than with blood perfusion in vessels as large as 3 mm in diameter. The latter indicates that intravascular hemoglobin affected the bronchoalveolar-to-arterial luminal NO concentration gradient in fairly large pulmonary arteries. The data provide information regarding pulmonary arterial smooth muscle accessibility to intrapulmonary gas that should be useful as part of the database for modeling the communication between intrapulmonary gas and pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells in future studies.  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) produced by endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) plays a central role in regulation of vascular tone and reactivity. The purpose of this study is to clarify the basal tone and microvascular reactivity in eNOS-overexpressing transgenic (Tg) mice in vivo with a microangiography system using monochromatic synchrotron radiation (SR). The mouse femoral artery was cannulated, nonionic contrast media was injected, and microangiography was performed in hindlimbs of mice. Serial images of the small blood vessels (diameter <200 microm) were recorded by the SR microangiography system. At basal conditions, the diameter of tibial arteries in eNOS-Tg mice was larger than that of wild-type mice (179 +/- 8 versus 132 +/- 8 microm; P < 0.01). l-NAME treatment decreased the vessel diameter and canceled the difference in vessel diameters between two genotypes. Acetylcholine- and sodium nitroprusside-induced relaxations of small vessels were significantly reduced in Tg mice compared with wild-type mice (35.0 +/- 9.4 versus 61.6 +/- 6.7%, 85.0 +/- 10.2 versus 97.3 +/- 6.7% of the maximum relaxation, respectively). Our data provide the evidence that overproduced NO from endothelium reduces vascular tone and plays a pivotal role in regulation of vascular tone in small vessels. Furthermore, the reduced NO-mediated relaxation in small vessels of eNOS-Tg mice is demonstrated for the first time in vivo. SR microangiography allows us to evaluate the reactivity in small-sized vessels and appears to be a powerful tool for assessing the microvascular circulation in vivo.  相似文献

The apparent viscosity of blood in glass tubes declines with decreasing diameter (F?hraeus-Lindqvist effect) and exhibits a distinctive minimum at 6-7 microm. However, flow resistance in vivo in small vessels is substantially higher than predicted by in vitro viscosity data. The presence of a thick endothelial surface layer (ESL) has been proposed as the primary cause for this discrepancy. Here, a physical model is proposed for microvascular flow resistance as a function of vessel diameter and hematocrit in vivo; it combines in vitro blood viscosity with effects of a diameter-dependent ESL. The model was developed on the basis of flow distributions observed in three microvascular networks in the rat mesentery with 392, 546, and 383 vessel segments, for which vessel diameters, network architecture, flow velocity, and hematocrit were determined by intravital microscopy. A previously described hemodynamic simulation was used to predict the distributions of flow and hematocrit from the assumed model for effective blood viscosity. The dependence of ESL thickness on vessel diameter was estimated by minimizing deviations of predicted values for velocities, flow directions, and hematocrits from measured data. Optimal results were obtained with a layer thickness of approximately 0.8-1 microm for 10- to 40-microm-diameter vessels and declined strongly for smaller diameters, with an additional hematocrit-dependent impact on flow resistance exhibiting a maximum for approximately 10-microm-diameter vessels. These results show that flow resistance in vivo can be explained by in vitro blood viscosity and the presence of an ESL and indicate the rheologically effective thickness of the ESL in microvessels.  相似文献

Vessel segmentation in retinal fundus images is a preliminary step to clinical diagnosis for some systemic diseases and some eye diseases. The performances of existing methods for segmenting small vessels which are usually of more importance than the main vessels in a clinical diagnosis are not satisfactory in clinical use. In this paper, we present a method for both main and peripheral vessel segmentation. A local gray-level change enhancement algorithm called gray-voting is used to enhance the small vessels, while a two-dimensional Gabor wavelet is used to extract the main vessels. We fuse the gray-voting results with the 2D-Gabor filter results as pre-processing outcome. A Gaussian mixture model is then used to extract vessel clusters from the pre-processing outcome, while small vessels fragments are obtained using another gray-voting process, which complements the vessel cluster extraction already performed. At the last step, we eliminate the fragments that do not belong to the vessels based on the shape of the fragments. We evaluated the approach with two publicly available DRIVE (Staal et al., 2004) and STARE (Hoover et at., 2000) datasets with manually segmented results. For the STARE dataset, when using the second manually segmented results which include much more small vessels than the first manually segmented results as the “gold standard,” this approach achieved an average sensitivity, accuracy and specificity of 65.0%, 92.1% and 97.0%, respectively. The sensitivities of this approach were much higher than those of the other existing methods, with comparable specificities; these results thus demonstrated that this approach was sensitive to detection of small vessels.  相似文献

Tropical trees are often excluded from dendrochronological investigations because of a lack of distinct growth ring boundaries, causing a gap in paleoclimate reconstructions from tropical regions. The potential use of time series of vessel features (density, diameter, surface area and hydraulic conductivity) combined with spectral analysis as a proxy for environmental conditions in the mangrove Rhizophora mucronata was investigated. Intra-annual differences in the vessel features revealed a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency (large vessels) during the rainy season and hydraulic safety (small, more numerous vessels) during the dry season. In addition to the earlywood-latewood variations, a semiannual signal was discovered in the vessel density and diameters after Fourier transformation. The similarity in the Fourier spectra of the vessel features and the climate data, in particular mean relative humidity and precipitation, provides strong evidence for a climatic driving force for the intra-annual variability of the vessel features. The high-resolution approach used in this study, in combination with spectral analysis, may have great potential for the study of climate variability in tropical regions.  相似文献

The branching pattern of the coronary arteries and veins is asymmetric, i.e., many small vessels branch off of a large trunk such that the two daughter vessels at a bifurcation are of unequal diameters and lengths. One important implication of the geometric vascular asymmetry is the dispersion of blood flow at a bifurcation, which leads to large spatial heterogeneity of myocardial blood flow. To document the asymmetric branching pattern of the coronary vessels, we computed an asymmetry ratio for the diameters and lengths of all vessels, defined as the ratio of the daughter diameters and lengths, respectively. Previous data from silicone elastomer cast of the entire coronary vasculature including arteries, arterioles, venules, and veins were analyzed. Data on smaller vessels were obtained from histological specimens by optical sectioning, whereas data on larger vessels were obtained from vascular casts. Asymmetry ratios for vascular areas, volumes, resistances, and flows of the various daughter vessels were computed from the asymmetry ratios of diameters and lengths for every order of mother vessel. The results show that the largest orders of arterial and venous vessels are most asymmetric and the degree of asymmetry decreases toward the smaller vessels. Furthermore, the diameter asymmetry at a bifurcation is significantly larger for the coronary veins (1.7-6.8 for sinus veins) than the corresponding arteries (1.5-5.8 for left anterior descending coronary artery) for orders 2-10, respectively. The reported diameter asymmetry at a bifurcation leads to significant heterogeneity of blood flow at a bifurcation. Hence, the present data quantify the dispersion of blood flow at a bifurcation and are essential for understanding flow heterogeneity in the coronary circulation.  相似文献

Results were compared between the latex paint and compressed air methods for determining total vessel lengths, and between the sectioning and maceration methods for determining vessel diameters. The minimum, mean, median, and maximum vessel diameters were less with the sectioning method than with the maceration technique. Vessel diameter distributions were always nonnormal and had roughly similar patterns with the two techniques, but were statistically different from one another. In all six species where the paint and air methods for determining vessel length were compared, both methods showed a similar skewed vessel length distribution, with many short vessels and few long ones. Although there was no consistent pattern to the difference in results with these two methods, the vessel length frequency distributions were statistically different from one another. With the paint method, many vessels, especially many of the narrowest ones, were not paint-filled at the paint infusion port. The air method utilized the paint method, in part, and, in addition, is based upon the incorrect assumption that all vessels in the stem are the same diameter. Both techniques tended to exclude vessel lengths of the narrowest vessels. However, the narrow vessels, although numerous, contributed an insignificant amount to the total theoretical hydraulic conductance in stems.  相似文献

We have developed a novel mapping software package to reconstruct microvascular networks in three dimensions (3-D) from in vivo video images for use in blood flow and O2 transport modeling. An intravital optical imaging system was used to collect video sequences of blood flow in microvessels at different depths in the tissue. Functional images of vessels were produced from the video sequences and were processed using automated edge tracking software to yield location and geometry data for construction of the 3-D network. The same video sequences were analyzed for hemodynamic and O2 saturation data from individual capillaries in the network. Simple user-driven commands allowed the connection of vessel segments at bifurcations, and semiautomated registration enabled the tracking of vessels across multiple focal planes and fields of view. The reconstructed networks can be rotated and manipulated in 3-D to verify vessel connections and continuity. Hemodynamic and O2 saturation measurements made in vivo can be indexed to corresponding vessels and visualized using colorized maps of the vascular geometry. Vessels in each reconstruction are saved as text-based files that can be easily imported into flow or O2 transport models with complete geometry, hemodynamic, and O2 transport conditions. The results of digital morphometric analysis of seven microvascular networks showed mean capillary diameters and overall capillary density consistent with previous findings using histology and corrosion cast techniques. The described mapping software is a valuable tool for the quantification of in vivo microvascular geometry, hemodynamics, and oxygenation, thus providing rich data sets for experiment-based computational models.  相似文献

To determine the effects of alveolar hypoxia on pulmonary microvascular volume, X-ray microfocal angiographic images of isolated perfused dog lung lobes were obtained during passage of a bolus of radiopaque contrast medium during both normoxic (alveolar gas, 15% O(2), 6% CO(2), and 79% N(2)) and hypoxic (3% O(2), 6% CO(2), and 91% N(2)) conditions. Regions of interest (ROIs) over the lobar artery and vein at low magnification and a feeding artery ( approximately 500 microm diameter) and the nearby microvasculature (vessels smaller than approximately 50 microm) at high magnification were identified, and X-ray absorbance vs. time curves were acquired under both conditions from the same ROIs. The total pulmonary vascular volume was calculated from the flow and the mean transit time for the contrast medium passage from the lobar artery to lobar vein. The fractional changes in microvascular volume were determined from the areas under the high-magnification X-ray absorbance curves. Hypoxia decreased lobar volume by 13 +/- 3% (SE) and regional microvascular volume by 26 +/- 4% (SE). Given the morphometry of the lung vasculature, these results suggest that capillary volume was decreased by hypoxia.  相似文献

Quantitative analysis of wood anatomical characteristics is usually performed using classical microtomy yielding optical micrographs of stained thin sections. It is time-consuming to obtain high quality cross-sections from microtomy, and sections can be damaged. This approach, therefore, is often impractical for those who need quick acquisition of quantitative data on vessel characteristics in wood. This paper reports results of a novel approach using X-ray computed microtomography (microCT) for non-invasive determination of wood anatomy. As a case study, stem wood samples of a 2-year-old beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and a 3-year-old oak (Quercus robur L.) tree were investigated with this technique, beech being a diffuse-porous and oak a ring-porous tree species. MicroCT allowed non-invasive mapping of 2-D transverse cross-sections of both wood samples with micrometer resolution. Self-developed software 'microCTanalysis' was used for image processing of the 2-D cross-sections in order to automatically determine the inner vessel diameters, the transverse cross-sectional surface area of the vessels, the vessel density and the porosity with computer assistance. Performance of this new software was compared with manual analysis of the same micrographs. The automatically obtained results showed no significant statistical differences compared to the manual measurements. Visual inspection of the microCT slices revealed very good correspondence with the optical micrographs. Statistical analysis confirmed this observation in a more quantitative way, and it was, therefore, argued that anatomical analysis of optical micrographs can be readily substituted by automated use of microCT, and this without loss of accuracy. Furthermore, as an additional application of microCT, the 3-D renderings of the internal microstructure of the xylem vessels for both the beech and the oak sample could be reconstructed, clearly showing the complex nature of vessel networks. It can be concluded that the use of microCT in wood science offers an interesting potential for all those who need quantitative data of wood anatomical characteristics in either the 2-D or the 3-D space.  相似文献

A physiologically realistic arterio-venous countercurrent vessel network model consisting of ten branching vessel generations, where the diameter of each generation of vessels is smaller than the previous ones, has been created and used to determine the thermal significance of different vessel generations by investigating their ability to exchange thermal energy with the tissue. The temperature distribution in the 3D network (8178 vessels; diameters from 10 to 1000 microm) is obtained by solving the conduction equation in the tissue and the convective energy equation with a specified Nusselt number in the vessels. The sensitivity of the exchange of energy between the vessels and the tissue to changes in the network parameters is studied for two cases; a high temperature thermal therapy case when tissue is heated by a uniformly distributed source term and the network cools the tissue, and a hypothermia related case, when tissue is cooled from the surface and the blood heats the tissue. Results show that first, the relative roles of vessels of different diameters are strongly determined by the inlet temperatures to those vessels (e.g., as affected by changing mass flow rates), and the surrounding tissue temperature, but not by their diameter. Second, changes in the following do not significantly affect the heat transfer rates between tissue and vessels; (a) the ratio of arterial to venous vessel diameter, (b) the diameter reduction coefficient (the ratio of diameters of successive vessel generations), and (c) the Nusselt number. Third, both arteries and veins play significant roles in the exchange of energy between tissue and vessels, with arteries playing a more significant role. These results suggest that the determination of which diameter vessels are thermally important should be performed on a case-by-case, problem dependent basis. And, that in the development of site-specific vessel network models, reasonable predictions of the relative roles of different vessel diameters can be obtained by using any physiologically realistic values of Nusselt number and the diameter reduction coefficient.  相似文献

PurposeAn investigation was carried out into the effect of three image registration techniques on the diagnostic image quality of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA) images.MethodsWhole-body CE-MRA data from the lower legs of 27 patients recruited onto a study of asymptomatic atherosclerosis were processed using three deformable image registration algorithms. The resultant diagnostic image quality was evaluated qualitatively in a clinical evaluation by four expert observers, and quantitatively by measuring contrast-to-noise ratios and volumes of blood vessels, and assessing the techniques' ability to correct for varying degrees of motion.ResultsThe first registration algorithm (‘AIR’) introduced significant stenosis-mimicking artefacts into the blood vessels' appearance, observed both qualitatively (clinical evaluation) and quantitatively (vessel volume measurements). The two other algorithms (‘Slicer’ and ‘SEMI’), based on the normalised mutual information (NMI) concept and designed specifically to deal with variations in signal intensity as found in contrast-enhanced image data, did not suffer from this serious issue but were rather found to significantly improve the diagnostic image quality both qualitatively and quantitatively, and demonstrated a significantly improved ability to deal with the common problem of patient motion.ConclusionsThis work highlights both the significant benefits to be gained through the use of suitable registration algorithms and the deleterious effects of an inappropriate choice of algorithm for contrast-enhanced MRI data. The maximum benefit was found in the lower legs, where the small arterial vessel diameters and propensity for leg movement during image acquisitions posed considerable problems in making accurate diagnoses from the un-registered images.  相似文献

Background

Angiogenesis is widely investigated in conjunction with cancer development, in particular because of the possibility of early stage detection and of new therapeutic strategies. However, such studies are negatively affected by the limitations of imaging techniques in the detection of microscopic blood vessels (diameter 3-5 ??m) grown under angiogenic stress. We report that synchrotron-based X-ray imaging techniques with very high spatial resolution can overcome this obstacle, provided that suitable contrast agents are used.

Results

We tested different contrast agents based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the detection of cancer-related angiogenesis by synchrotron microradiology, microtomography and high resolution X-ray microscopy. Among them only bare-AuNPs in conjunction with heparin injection provided sufficient contrast to allow in vivo detection of small capillary species (the smallest measured lumen diameters were 3-5 ??m). The detected vessel density was 3-7 times higher than with other nanoparticles. We also found that bare-AuNPs with heparin allows detecting symptoms of local extravascular nanoparticle diffusion in tumor areas where capillary leakage appeared.

Conclusions

Although high-Z AuNPs are natural candidates as radiology contrast agents, their success is not guaranteed, in particular when targeting very small blood vessels in tumor-related angiography. We found that AuNPs injected with heparin produced the contrast level needed to reveal--for the first time by X-ray imaging--tumor microvessels with 3-5 ??m diameter as well as extravascular diffusion due to basal membrane defenestration. These results open the interesting possibility of functional imaging of the tumor microvasculature, of its development and organization, as well as of the effects of anti-angiogenic drugs.  相似文献

The coronary vasculature is characterized by highly asymmetric diameters at bifurcations, which may be an important determinant of flow distribution. To facilitate accurate reconstruction of the coronary network for hemodynamic analysis, we introduce a statistical data set of the diameter asymmetry at bifurcations based on morphometric data of the porcine coronary arterial and venous trees. The bifurcation asymmetry data were represented by the diameter ratio of the daughters relative to mother vessel and by an area expansion ratio (AER) at each bifurcation. A novel asymmetry ratio matrix was introduced to describe the diameter asymmetry of daughters to mother vessels. The relations between AER and flow velocity, and asymmetry ratio matrix and flow distribution, were considered. The results indicate that the ratio of large daughter to mother vessel has a minimum value at order 5 (mean diameter of approximately 70 microm), whereas the ratio of small daughter to mother vessel decreases monotonically with increase in order number. The AER was found to be fairly uniform for larger vessels and to increase from order 5 toward the capillaries. At order 5, we observe a transition in asymmetric bifurcation pattern that may mark a hemodynamic transition from transmural to perfusion subnetworks. The functional implications of these structural transitions are considered.  相似文献

Volumetric computed tomography (VCT) is a technology in which area detectors are used for imaging large volumes of a subject with isotropic imaging resolution. We are experimenting with a prototype VCT scanner that uses flat-panel X-ray detectors and is designed for high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) imaging. Using this technique, we have demonstrated microangiography of xeno-transplanted skin squamous cell carcinomas in nude mice. VCT shows the vessel architecture of tumors and animals with greater detail and plasticity than has previously been achieved, and is superior to contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) angiography. VCT and MR images correlate well for larger tumor vessels, which are tracked from their origin on 3D reconstructions of VCT images. When compared with histology, small tumor vessels with a diameter as small as 50 microm were clearly visualized. Furthermore, imaging small vessel networks inside the tumor tissue improved discrimination of vital and necrotic regions. Thus, VCT substantially improves imaging of vascularization in tumors and offers a promising tool for preclinical studies of tumor angiogenesis and antiangiogenic therapies.  相似文献

Lianas and other climbing plants are known for their extraordinarily wide vessels. Wide vessels are thought to contribute to the extreme hydraulic efficiency of lianas and to play a part in their ability to dominate many tropical habitats, and even their globally increasing abundance with anthropic disturbance. However, recent hydraulic optimality models suggest that the average vessel diameter of plants generally is the result of tip-to-base vessel widening reflecting the effects of selection buffering conductive path length-imposed hydraulic resistance. These models state that mean vessel diameter should be predicted by stem length, by implication even in lianas. We explore vessel–stem relations with 1409 samples from 424 species in 159 families of both self- and non-self-supporting plants. We show that, far from being exceptional in their vessel diameter, lianas have average natural (not hydraulically weighted) vessel diameters that are indistinguishable for a given stem length from those in self-supporting plants. Lianas do, however, have wider variance in vessel diameter. They have a small number of vessels that are wider than those in self-supporting plants of similar stem lengths, and also narrower vessels. This slightly greater variance is sufficient to make hydraulically weighted vessel diameters in lianas higher than those of self-supporting counterparts of similar stem lengths. Moreover, lianas have significantly more vessels per unit of wood transection than self-supporting plants do. This subtle combination of slightly higher vessel diameter variance and higher vessel density for a given stem length is likely what makes lianas hydraulically distinctive, rather than their having vessels that are truly exceptionally wide.  相似文献

Elms containing narrow and scattered vessels have been reported to be more resistant to Ophiostoma novo-ulmi (Dutch elm disease pathogen) than elms with large and contiguous vessels. However, recent measurements in Ulmus pumila and U. minor showed a contrary trend. The pin method was applied to 4-yr-old branches of eight clones planted in Madrid. During 2002, radial growth increments and vessel diameters were measured monthly, and beetle trapping was undertaken weekly. U. minor formed larger vessels at the beginning of the season, coinciding with a peak of captured beetles, but, up to June 15, vessels were larger for U. pumila. The number of vessels per group, the transversal area per vessel group, and the mean theoretical hydraulic conductances were significantly higher for U. minor on most dates. Researchers should take into consideration the seasonal changes in vessel size. The results highlight that seasonal variation of vessel diameters and hydraulic parameters, in combination with beetle abundance, are the main factors that could explain the different susceptibility of both elm species to O. novo-ulmi.  相似文献

The bulbar conjunctiva is one of the few areas in which blood flow in the peripheral vasculature can be directly and noninvasively observed in the human. Although extensive literature exists describing morphological changes which correlate with a variety of systemic diseases in this vasculature, little quantitative data is available on hemodynamics in either normal or abnormal states. The hemodynamic data available are primarily subjective assessments of "low flow." Approaches to place the subjective assessment on more quantitative grounds have usually been based on photographic techniques that have intrinsic inadequacies. The objective of the work reported here was to develop a system capable of providing sequential blood velocity data potentially useful for providing quantitative information on blood flow and its change in the microvessels of the human conjunctiva. The method that has evolved uses a standard Zeiss slit-lamp to image a subject's conjunctival vessels by using a 1-inch Newvicon TV camera with an electronic magnification of 2x. The video image is simultaneously recorded on a video tape recorder (VTR) to an overall system magnification of approximately 4 microm/raster line. The data acquisition phase requires approximately 5 minutes of patient time, whereas the actual determination of blood velocity in individual vessels is done offline through a modification of the dual-slit videodensimetric method. Two independently controllable video cursors are placed axially over the vessel image with the VTR in the still-frame mode. For each consecutive video field, the position of two reference points on the vessel and the position of each cursor relative to these and to each other are encoded into a computer to track the moving image caused by normal eye movement. The computer then determines new cursor coordinates to ensure a constant position within the vessel. The electrical signals obtained for each cursor site and for each video field are cross-correlated to yield the average blood velocity over the sampled time interval. The system has been calibrated in vitro from 0.2 to 2.5 mm/sec, evaluated in experimental animals, and used to measure blood velocity (0.3 to 1.5 mm/sec) in human conjunctival venules with diameters ranging from 20 to 50 microm. At this writing, blood velocity has been recorded during a period of about 3 months in the same vessel of several postmyocardial infarction patients. Thus, the method appears suitable for determining sequential changes in small vessel blood flow in patients over extended periods of time.  相似文献

Automatic detection of retinal blood vessels and measurement of vessel diameter are important steps in the computer aided diagnosis in ophthalmology. Here, we present a new multi-scale vessel enhancement method based on complex continuous wavelet transform (CCWT). The parameters of CCWT are optimized to represent line structures in all directions and separate them from simple edges. The final vessel network is obtained by applying an adaptive histogram-based thresholding process along with a proper length filtering method. An efficient circular structure operator is employed on the centerline of vessels to estimate their diameters. The performance of the proposed method is measured on the publicly available DRIVE and STARE databases and compared with several state-of-the-art methods as well as second observer. The proposed method shows much higher accuracy (95%) and sensitivity (79%) in the same range of specificity (97%). The predictive value of it is higher than 72.9%. The vessel diameter estimation process also shows lower root mean square error compared to the existing methods and second observer.  相似文献
