Previous studies on frequency-dependent food selection (changing food preferences in response to changes in relative food abundance) have focused on predators and parasitoids. These organisms utilize several victims during their lifetime. We introduce the case of parasites which, having accepted a host, do not change it. We propose two alternative models to explain the biased occurrence of parasites on different host types: (1) through the option of rejecting less-preferred hosts prior to accepting one of them; (2) by differential parasite survival on different host types. These models predict that host rejection, but not differential survival, can create frequency-dependent parasitism (FDP). Unlike previously described factors responsible for frequency dependence of food selection, which act through changing the foraging behaviour of individual predators or parasitoids, FDP involves no adjustment of parasite foraging strategy according to previous feeding experience. The mite Hemisarcoptes coccophagus is an obligate parasite of armoured scale insects (Homptera: Diaspididae). Our field data show that H. coccophagus is found more frequently on ovipositing than on young host females. Our model, combining the effects of host rejection and differential survival, is used to estimate the relative contribution of these factors to parasite biased occurrence on different hosts. The contribution of differential survival was dominant in H. coccophagus, and overode any effect of host rejection. Nevertheless, our prediction that FDP may be found in parasites is supported by literature data about a parasitic water mite.  相似文献

Reciprocal transplant experiments have been used to estimate the probability that negative frequency-dependent selection by natural enemies has occurred in host populations by determining whether pest populations are less adapted to “foreign” (rare) hosts, which originate from a population with which the pests have not coevolved. However, these experiments usually confound the effects of frequency and origin: the rare genotypes are also genotypes that did not originate at a site. When clonal organisms are used, and the clones occur in more than one population, it is possible to separate the effects of origin and frequency. Here I present the results of an experiment in which Arabis clones of known frequency were reciprocally transplanted among sites. Contrary to expectations, clones at their site of origin had less disease, less herbivory, and higher fitness than foreign clones. However, variation within and among sites in herbivory and infection was large, suggesting that the number of sites and clones needed to thoroughly test the hypothesis of negative frequency-dependent selection in this system is very large: thus, these results are suggestive but not conclusive. Few studies have examined the potential for pathogens with complex life cycles to cause selection on their required alternate (=intermediate) hosts. Here we examine the effects of two fungal pathogens on an herbaceous mustard, Arabis holboellii. One pathogen species uses A. holboellii as a primary host, the other uses it as an alternate host. This plant-pathogen system is especially interesting because the host, A. holboellii, is apomictic; thus individuals reproduce exact copies of themselves. Despite this mode of reproduction, A. holboellii populations are surprisingly genetically diverse. Could frequency dependent selection by pathogens be maintaining clonal diversity? This study assesses the potential for selection by pathogens. In a controlled greehouse experiment we show that there is heritable variation in A. holboellii's resistance to the rust, Puccinia monoica, and that host fitness is severely reduced by P. monoica infection in both the greenhouse and under natural conditions. Field observations indicate that host clones are also differentially susceptible to the short-cycled rust, P. thlaspeos, and that host fitness is reduced by infection to this pathogen as well. Although the preconditions for pathogen-mediated selection are present, frequency-dependent selection by pathogens is unlikely to be important in structuring populations of Arabis holboellii because multiple host genotypes are susceptible to the same inoculum and the pathogen has a long generation time.  相似文献

We compare the results of four experiments, conducted at different times and with different protocols, that explored the relationship between frequency-dependent selection and prey density in wild birds feeding on artificial populations of coloured baits. One (experiment 4) used pastry baits that differed only in the presence or absence of a red stripe, and this experiment provided no evidence for any kind of selective behaviour. The other three experiments used green and brown baits, and they all provided evidence for a trend towards increasing anti-apostatic selection with high densities (>100 baits m–2). However, one of these (experiment 3) provided no evidence for frequency-dependent selection at low densities (0.5–20 baits m–2), while the other two experiments concurred in suggesting a trend towards increasing apostatic selection with low densities (down to 2 baits m–2). Together, these experiments both support and qualify the published findings of experiment 1 that frequency- dependent selection by wild birds on bait populations is modified by density. Experiment 4 indicates that frequency-dependent selection may break down entirely if bait types are too similar, while experiment 3 indicates that some details of this trend with density will depend either on the protocol used or on exogenous changes in the birds’ feeding behaviour. Summary Attempts were made to obtain intergeneric hybrids between Diplotaxis siifolia, a wild species, and cultivars of Brassica (B. campestris, B. juncea, and B. napus). The crosses showed unilateral incompatibility. When the wild species was used as female parent, pollen germination and pollen tube growth were normal, but hybrid seeds aborted due to post-fertilization barriers. Reciprocal crosses (cultivars as female parent) showed strong pre-fertilization barriers; although pollen grains showed germination, pollen tubes failed to enter the stigma. Hybrids were realized in two of the crosses, D. siifolia x B. juncea and D. siifolia x B. napus, through ovary culture. The hybrids were multiplied in vitro by multiplication of axillary shoots, or somatic embryogenesis. Detailed studies were carried out on the hybrid D. siifolia x B. juncea. F1 hybrids had shrivelled anthers and were pollen sterile. Amphiploids of this hybrid showed 60% pollen fertility and produced seeds upon self-pollination as well as backcross pollination with the pollen of B. juncea.  相似文献

The selectable marker system, which utilizes the pmi gene encoding for phosphomannose-isomerase that converts mannose-6-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate, was adapted for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Only transformed cells were capable of utilizing mannose as a carbon source. The highest transformation frequency of 23% was obtained with 10 g/l mannose and 10 g/l sucrose in the medium. Molecular, genetic analysis, and PMI activity assay showed that the regenerated shoots contained the pmi gene and the gene was transmitted to the progeny in a Mendelian fashion. The results indicated that the mannose selection system, which is devoid of the disadvantages of antibiotic or herbicide selection, could be used for cucumber Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.  相似文献

Summary Somatic embryos, developed from hypocotyl segments of light-grown seedlings of Brassica juncea cv RLM198, were subjected to selection at varying concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl). Plants were developed from proliferated somatic embryos selected on NaCl-containing medium. The selections were characterized for salt tolerance, esterase isozyme pattern, and proline accumulation. It has been found that: (i) selected tolerant lines showed better root growth, shoot growth, and fresh weight accumulation on salt-containing medium when compared to the control; (ii) salt tolerance was transmitted to the next generation in seed progeny of tolerant plants grown in the absence of exposure to salt; (iii) both the starting material and the tolerant selections accumulated proline, even when grown in salt-free medium. On salt-containing medium, however, the differences in accumulated proline between the control and tolerant lines became more pronounced, and (iv) the patterns of esterase isozymes of two tolerant selections were similar but distinctly different from that of the parental control.  相似文献

Summary. The mature apomictic embryo sac of Chondrilla juncea is highly vacuolated and demonstrates a polarization similar to that of the amphimictic gametophyte. The microtubule cytoskeleton of this embryo sac is uncharacteristic and relatively weak. The microtubules are positioned along cell walls and resemble cortical microtubules of somatic cells. They do not form the parallel, brushlike structures observed around the filiform apparatus of synergids in the amphimictic embryo sac. In the apomictic embryo sac, the microtubules of both the egg cell and the central cell develop a cortical-like structure, which is entirely different from the radial arrangement observed around the nuclei in the amphimictic embryo sac. Summary The effect of simulated opposing natural selection on the response to mass selection for 18-day pupa weight of Tribolium castaneum was studied for 10 generations of selection. Natural selection was simulated in replicated treatment lines by imposing a negative relationship between mid-parent genetic value for pupa weight and fertility. Responses to selection and realized heritabilities were smaller (P < 0.05 and P < 0.10, respectively) for the treatment lines than for control lines under selection for pupa weight only. One treatment, line E3G1, reached an intermediate selection plateau by generation 10, and responded linearly to 4 generations of artificial selection after natural selection had been discontinued. Possible explanations for the different behaviors of the replicate lines E3G1 and E3G2 were also discussed.  相似文献

Summary The incidence and severity of Rhynchosporium secalis infections were assessed in a large population of Hordeum leporinum. Transects were set out in four directions from five trees to determine the effect of shading. Under the tree canopy 60.3% of H. leporinum plants were infected while only 11.2% were infected away from the canopy. Disease severity, on those plants which were infected, was higher under the canopy (mean 12.4% and 13.0% leaf area diseased for the flag and first leaves, respectively) than away from the canopy (means of 7.8% and 5.0% for the flag and first leaves respectively). Plants under the tree canopy contained on average 23% more nitrogen, raising the possibility that the susceptibility of the host changed in response to nitrogen levels. However, the observed pattern is also consistent with the hypothesis that shade-associated changes in the environment enhanced the ability of the pathogen to infect and develop on the host. The data clearly demonstrate the importance of small-scale environmental factors on natural host-pathogen interactions. These environmental factors may cause differential selection for disease resistance within a host population, which may ultimately lead to the formation of sub-populations with differing levels of resistance.  相似文献

Summary Allozymic variation in proteins encoded by 48 loci was analyzed electrophoretically in 1984 and 1985 in 137 individual plants of wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, from a microsite in Yehudiyya, northeast of the Lake of Galilee, Israel. The test involved two climatic microniches in the open Tabor oak forest (1) sunny between trees and (2) shady under trees' canopies. Significant genetic differentiation at single-, two- and multilocus structures was found between neighboring climatic niches, which were only separated by a few meters. Our results suggest that allozyme polymorphisms in wild emmer wheat are partly adaptive, and differentiate primarily at the multilocus level by climatic factors presumably related to aridity stress.  相似文献

Wild-carrot (Daucus carota L.) cell cultures were screened to yield small (less than 63 m) or large (greater than 170 m) cell aggregates which were then subcultured. Cultures of the small-size class had a higher, those of the large-size class a lower anthocyanin yield than the unscreened culture. This relationship became accentuated with an increasing number of passages with screening prior to subculture. At the end of six months (12 passages), the pigment yield of the small-size class was triple that of the unscreened cells. Following this selection period, the tendency of the small-size fraction to increase in clump size when subcultured without screening was much less than that of freshly isolated cell aggregates of the same size. These observations may be explainable on the basis of a differential distribution of cytokinin between aggregates of different sizes. High levels of cytokinin inhibit anthocyanin accumulation and inhibit cell separation; these effects result in large cell aggregates having low levels of anthocyanin. In support of this hypothesis, it is shown that addition of kinetin to cultures of small cell aggregates causes an increase in the size of cell aggregates and a parallel decrease in anthocyanin yield.  相似文献

Rodent acorn selection in a Mediterranean oak landscape   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Quercus suber, Quercus ilex and Quercus coccifera (Cork, Holm and Kermes oaks, respectively) are common evergreen oak species that coexist in the landscapes of the western part of the Mediterranean basin. Rodents are the main acorn predators and thus one of the main factors for understanding recruitment patterns in oaks. In this paper we analyse to what extent mice prefer acorns from one oak species over another in three oak species studied using acorn removal experiments and video tape recordings. Twenty labelled acorns from each of the three Quercus species (60 acorns) were placed in 40 cm×40 cm quadrats on each plot. Because selection might vary as a result of the vegetation context, we performed the trials in the five main vegetation types within the study area (four replicates in each vegetation type) in order to control for habitat influences on rodent acorn preferences (a total of 20 plots). The removal of 1,200 acorns occurred within 68 days. Mice removed 98.7% of the acorns. Q. ilex acorns were preferred over Q. suber and Q. coccifera in all vegetation types except in pine forest, where no acorn preferences were detected. Acorn removal rates differed with vegetation type, correlating positively with shrub cover. The distance at which acorns were displaced by rodents (mean =4.6 m±5.1 SD) did not differ between acorn species, but varied among vegetation types. Bigger acorns of Q. coccifera were selected only after Q. ilex and Q. suber acorns were depleted, while no size selection was detected for the latter two species. Thus, we conclude that rodents show preference for some oak acorns and that landscape context contributes significantly to rodent activities and decisions.  相似文献

Summary Allozymic variation in proteins encoded by 47 loci was analyzed electrophoretically in 1983/4 and 1984/5 in 356 individual plants of wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, from a microsite at Tabigha, north of the Sea of Galilee, Israel. Each year the test involved two 100-meter transects, each equally subdivided into basalt and terra rossa soil types, and comparisons were based on 16 common polymorphic loci. Significant genetic differentiation, genetic phase disequilibria, and genome organization according to soil type were found over very short distances. Our results suggest that allozyme polymorphisms in wild emmer wheat are partly adaptive, and that they differentiate at both single and multilocus structures primarily from environmental stress of such ecological factors as soil type, topography, and temporal changes, probably through aridity stress.  相似文献

We examined the effects of pollen selection for rapid pollen-tube growth on progeny vigor. First, we crossed a wild gourd (Cucurbita texana) to a cultivated zucchini (Cucurbita pepo cv Black Beauty) to produce an F1 and then an F2 generation. Half of the F1 seeds were produced by depositing small loads of C. texana pollen onto the stigmas of C. pepo. These small pollen loads were insufficient to produce a full complement of seeds and, consequently, both the fast- and the slow-growing pollen tubes were permitted to achieve fertilization. An F2 generation was then produced by depositing small loads of F1 pollen onto stigmas of F1 plants. The F2 seeds resulting from two generations of small pollen loads are termed the non-selected line because there was little or no selection for pollen-tube growth rate on these plants. The other half of the F1 and F2 seeds were produced by depositing large pollen loads (>10 000 pollen grains) onto stigmas and then allowing only the first 1% or so of the pollen tubes that entered the ovary to fertilize the ovules. We did this by excising the styles at the ovary at 12–15 h after pollination. The resulting F2 seeds are termed the selected line because they were produced by two generations of selection for only the fastest growing pollen tubes. Small pollen loads from the F2plants, both the selected and the non-selected lines, were then deposited onto stigmas of different C. pepo flowers, and the vigor of the resulting seeds was compared under greenhouse and field conditions. The results showed that the seeds fertilized by pollen from the selected line had greater vegetative vigor as seedlings and greater flower and fruit production as mature plants than the seeds fertilized by pollen from the non-selected line. This study demonstrates that selection for fast pollen-tube growth (selection on the microgametophyte) leads to a correlated increase in sporophyte (progeny) vigor.  相似文献

Wheat line CSP44, a selection from an Australian bread wheat cultivar Condor, has shown resistance to stripe rust in India since the last twenty years. Seedlings and adult plants of CSP44 showed susceptible infection types against stripe rust race 46S119 but displayed average terminal disease severity of 2.67 on adult plants against this race as compared to 70.33 of susceptible Indian cultivar, WL711. This suggests the presence of nonhypersensitive adult plant stripe rust resistance in the line CSP44. The evaluation of F1, F2 and F3 generations and F6 SSD families from the cross of CSP44 with susceptible wheat cultivar WL711 for stripe rust severity indicated that the resistance in CSP44 is based on two genes showing additive effect. A selection system based on the phosphomannose-isomerase gene (pmi) as a selectable marker and mannose as the selective agent was evaluated for the transformation of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.). Mannose is an unusable carbon source for many plant species. After uptake, mannose is phosphorylated by endogenous hexokinases to mannose-6-phosphate. The accumulation of mannose-6-phosphate leads to a block in glycolysis by inhibition of phosphoglucose-isomerase, resulting in severe growth inhibition. The phosphomannose-isomerase is encoded by the manA gene from Escherichia coli and catalyzes the conversion of mannose-6-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate, an intermediate of glycolysis. Transformed cells expressing the manA gene can therefore utilize mannose as a carbon and survive on media containing mannose. The manA gene along with a β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene was transferred into apple cv. ‘Holsteiner Cox’ via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Leaf explants were selected on medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of mannose and sorbitol to establish an optimized mannose selection protocol. Transgenic lines were regenerated after an initial selection pressure of 1–2 g l−1 mannose in combination with 30 g l−1 sorbitol followed by a stepwise increase in the mannose concentration up to 10 g l−1 and simultaneous decrease in the sorbitol concentration. Integration of transgenes in the apple genome of selected plants was confirmed by PCR and southern blot analysis. GUS histochemical and chlorophenol red (CPR) assays confirmed activity of both transgenes in regenerated plants. The pmi/mannose selection system is shown to be highly efficient for producing transgenic apple plants without using antibiotics or herbicides.  相似文献

Summary The body size of the host insect in which a parasitoid develops can have important effects on its development and life history. Large and small host body size have both been suggested to be advantageous to parasitoids, depending on the life-history of the species concerned. We test field data on the bumblebeeBombus terrestris and its conopid parasitoids for evidence of differences in size between parasitised and unparasitised worker bees. Bees acting as hosts for conopid parasitoids are on average larger-bodied than unparasitised bees. This result holds for bees collected in two different years, and whether bees are collected while foraging or from the nest. The results we present demonstrate differential parasitism of hosts of different body sizes, but do not necessarily indicate active host choice by conopids. However, they are in agreement with independent evidence that conopids develop more successfully in large-than in small-bodied hosts.  相似文献

We report in this study, the successful deployment of a double mutant acetolactate synthase gene (ALSdm, containing Pro 197 to Ser and Ser 653 to Asn substitutions) as an efficient in vitro selection marker for the development of transgenic plants in Brassica juncea (oilseed mustard). The ALS enzyme is inhibited by two categories of herbicides, sulfonylureas (e.g. chlorsulfuron) and imidazolinones (e.g. imazethapyr), while the mutant forms are resistant to the same. Three different selection agents (kanamycin, chlorsulfuron and imazethapyr) were tested for in vitro selection efficiency in two B. juncea cultivars, RLM198 and Varuna. For both the cultivars, higher transformation frequencies were obtained using chlorsulfuron (3.8 +/- 0.6% and 4.6 +/- 0.9% for RLM198 and Varuna, respectively) and imazethapyr (10.2 +/- 0.7% for RLM198 and 7.8 +/- 1.2% for Varuna) as compared to that obtained on kanamycin (3.1 +/- 0.2% and 2.8 +/- 0.5% for RLM198 and Varuna, respectively). Additionally, transformation frequencies were higher on imazethapyr than on chlorsulfuron for both the cultivars indicating that imidazolinones are better selective agents than sulfonylureas for the selection of mustard transgenics.  相似文献

Summary Habitat selection whereby individuals within a population have different microhabitat preferences is possibly important for genetic diversity and stability. It has received a good deal of attention, especially forDrosophila populations. The literature is summarized and an attempt is made to reconcile what appear to be contradictory findings. Some generalizations are drawn: (1) individualDrosophila choose habitats in consistent and characteristic ways; (2) some microhabitat differences are more important to flies than others; (3) genetic factors influence habitat preferences; (4) experiential factors influence habitat preferences; (5) differences in processing ability moderate the influence of experience on habitat choice. It is argued that the traditional analysis of variance models are frequently not very helpful for visualizing the process, and a computational model is suggested instead.  相似文献
