The genus Auricullina Vassiljeva, 1998 and its type species A. papulosa Vassiljeva, 1998 are redescribed based on new well-preserved material, which allows me to revise the generic diagnosis and greatly add to the morphological characterization of the type species. A new species, A. granulosa sp. nov., is described from the Botomian of Australia. The synonymy of the taxa is improved. The morphology and function of shell pores in Cambrian univalved mollusks are discussed.  相似文献

Three Ektaphelenchus species with unusual spicules are redescribed. Ektaphelenchus obtusus and E. riograndensis are redescribed from newly discovered material in the collection of the USDA Forest Service RMRS. Lectotype slides are designated for both species. Ektaphelenchus obtusus is characterized by a set-off head, lips of unequal size, double rows of oocytes and spermatocytes, and a hooked spicule terminus. Ektaphelenchus riograndensis is distinguished by a rounded head with six equal lips, and spicules with a large, rounded apex, and recurved terminus. A bursa and gubernaculum are absent in both species. Ektaphelenchus scolyti is redescribed from type material deposited in the collection of Rothamsted Experimental Station. It is characterized by a well set-off head, double rows of oocytes and spermatocytes, and spicules with a hooked terminus. A bursa and gubernaculum are absent.  相似文献

The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) poses a number of fascinating scientific questions, including the taxonomic status of postulated subspecies. Here, we obtained and assessed the sequence variation of 411 complete mitogenomes, mainly from the European H. r. rustica, but other subspecies as well. In almost every case, we observed subspecies-specific haplogroups, which we employed together with estimated radiation times to postulate a model for the geographical and temporal worldwide spread of the species. The female barn swallow carrying the Hirundo rustica ancestral mitogenome left Africa (or its vicinity) around 280 thousand years ago (kya), and her descendants expanded first into Eurasia and then, at least 51 kya, into the Americas, from where a relatively recent (<20 kya) back migration to Asia took place. The exception to the haplogroup subspecies specificity is represented by the sedentary Levantine H. r. transitiva that extensively shares haplogroup A with the migratory European H. r. rustica and, to a lesser extent, haplogroup B with the Egyptian H. r. savignii. Our data indicate that rustica and transitiva most likely derive from a sedentary Levantine population source that split at the end of the Younger Dryas (YD) (11.7 kya). Since then, however, transitiva received genetic inputs from and admixed with both the closely related rustica and the adjacent savignii. Demographic analyses confirm this species’ strong link with climate fluctuations and human activities making it an excellent indicator for monitoring and assessing the impact of current global changes on wildlife.  相似文献

The regulation of body-wall muscle contraction in the ascidian Styela rustica was studied. Acetylcholine (ACh, 1?C10 ??M) induced a significant contraction of isolated muscle strips. The ACh-induced contractile response was potentiated and prolonged in the presence of proserine (15 ??M), which confirms acetylcholinesterase activity in the S. rustica body-wall muscle. Atropine (1?C100 ??M, M-cholinoreceptor blocker) did not prevent the ACh-induced contractile response, while d-tubocurarine (1?C100 ??M, N-cholinoreceptor blocker) progressively reduced muscle contraction induced by 10 ??M ACh. Thus, neuromuscular transmission in the S. rustica body-wall muscle is mediated by nicotinic-like ACh-receptors. Procaine reduced ACh-induced (10 ??M) muscle contraction. As well, our experiments showed spontaneous rhythmic contractile activity in isolated muscle strips of S. rustica. Atropine, d-tubocurarine, procaine, and proserine did not alter rhythmic activity. Myogenic automaticity is suggested as a possible cause of the rhythmic contraction of the ascidian body-wall muscle.  相似文献

In the sexual interspecific cross, Nicotiana rustica L.xN. tabacum L., N. rustica can serve as the female but not as the male parent. By fusion of protoplasts, the barrier to fertilization was overcome and somatic hybrids containing N. tabacum cytoplasm were produced as shown by isoelectric focusing of the Fraction-1 protein (F-1-protein). All somatic hybrids displayed polypeptides of the large subunit of F-1 protein (which is coded by the chloroplast genome) characteristic of only one or the other parental species. Two hybrids had large subunits of the N. tabacum type and two hybrids had those of the N. rustica type. Three hybrids contained three smallsubunit polypeptides (coded by the nuclear genome), one being characteristic of N. rustica, one characteristic of N. tabacum, and one with an isoelectric point common to both species. A fourth hybrid contained only two small-subunit polypeptides of the N. tabacum type but in a F-1 protein macromolecule whose large subunits were of the N. rustica type. One somatic hybrid was self-fertile and its F2 progeny contained large- and small-subunit polypeptides indistinguishable in their isoelectric points from those in the parent F1 hybrid. All somatic hybrids showed an aneuploid chromosome number and morphological characteristics intermediate between those of N. rustica and N. tabacum.  相似文献

The taxonomic status of a disjunctive population of Phyllomedusa from southern Brazil was diagnosed using molecular, chromosomal, and morphological approaches, which resulted in the recognition of a new species of the P. hypochondrialis group. Here, we describe P. rustica sp. n. from the Atlantic Forest biome, found in natural highland grassland formations on a plateau in the south of Brazil. Phylogenetic inferences placed P. rustica sp. n. in a subclade that includes P. rhodei + all the highland species of the clade. Chromosomal morphology is conservative, supporting the inference of homologies among the karyotypes of the species of this genus. Phyllomedusa rustica is apparently restricted to its type-locality, and we discuss the potential impact on the strategies applied to the conservation of the natural grassland formations found within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biome in southern Brazil. We suggest that conservation strategies should be modified to guarantee the preservation of this species.  相似文献

The land planarian genus Choeradoplana (Plathelminthes, Tricladida) is currently integrated by 13 species. In previous works, morphological variation in its type species, Choeradoplana iheringi, was reported, but no attempt to test whether it is just a single species has been made yet. In order to disentangle the taxonomy of this species and further members of the genus, we sampled new specimens and combined morphological and molecular data and also have evaluated the performance of diverse methods of molecular species delimitation. Our data point to the presence of two cryptic species named C. iheringi, plus two new species, all hidden under the same general appearance. An in-depth morphological study of the specimens allowed detection of diagnostic morphological traits in each species, for which we also propose a molecular diagnosis. This integrative taxonomic study demonstrates once again the usefulness of molecular tools to weigh minor morphological characteristics and thus reveal the existence of species that would otherwise remain cryptic. However, under certain parameters, the molecular methods may over-split species with a high genetic structure, maybe pointing to incipient speciation. This makes critical the use of these methods combined with a comprehensive morphological approach. We also present a comprehensive phylogenetic tree including most Choeradoplana species. The tree, well supported, allows making some preliminary inferences on the evolution of the group and its historical biogeography.  相似文献

The tropical copepod Notodiaptomus iheringi (N. iheringi) is an ideal subject for studying zooplankton responses to cyanobacteria because it co-exists with permanent blooms across widespread regions in South America in high abundance. Single and mixed diets containing Cryptomonas and either a microcystin-producing (MC+) or microcystin-lacking (MC?) Microcystis were offered to N. iheringi at different proportions in a 10-day laboratory survival test to distinguish between the effects of toxicity versus nutrition. As expected, the pure MC+ Microcystis diet caused acute toxicity, indicated by high mortality compared to starved copepods. Both Microcystis strains were ingested in a 3-h short-term grazing experiment with pure diets. Despite its toxicity as the sole food source, survival was unaffected by MC+ Microcystis in mixed food diets. Even when MC+ Microcystis was 90% of the total food, survival was similar to the control with 10% Cryptomonas only. Hence, the survival in mixed food diets was controlled by the amount of Cryptomonas, not Microcystis. Previous reports show strong negative effects of Microcystis on copepod survival despite abundant high-quality food. Although this is the first example of copepods avoiding acute Microcystis toxicity in mixed diets, it could be a common trait where permanent blooms dominate the ecosystem.  相似文献

The pumping activity of the bivalve Mytulus edulus, Hiatella arctica, and solitary ascidian Styela rustica from the White Sea has been studied. The dependence of the pumping activity on the mass and size of animals has been analyzed. It was shown that the mussel is the most active filter-feeder, that the least value of the pumping activity has been registered for H. arctica, and that S. rustica occupies an intermediate position according this index. The results obtained are examined in connection with the competitive relationship of the animals in the fouling community.  相似文献

The cutthroat eel Dysomma alticorpus n. sp. is described based on a single specimen collected in a trammel net at a depth of 350 m off Eilat, Israel, Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. The new species belongs to the Dysomma anguillare species complex, which comprises species possessing a well-developed pectoral fin, intermaxillary teeth, a uniserial row of 7–15 large compound teeth in the lower jaw (which may be followed by a few smaller teeth), and an anteriorly situated anus with the trunk shorter than the head length. It is characterised by a combination of the following characters: origin of the dorsal fin well anterior to the base of the pectoral fin, predorsal length 13.8% TL; preanal length 22.8% TL; three compound teeth on the vomer; head pores: IO 4, SO 3; M 6; POP 0; AD 1, F 0, ST 0; lateral-line pores: predorsal 4, prepectoral 8, preanal 14, total 57–58, the last at the posterior two-thirds of the total length; MVF 7–16–115; total vertebrae 115. Dysomma alticorpus n. sp. is compared with other species of the genus. A revised key to the species of the genera Dysomma and Dysommina is provided.  相似文献

Schistura porocephala, a new nemacheilid species, is described from a stream that drains into the Mat River (Koladyne basin), India. It is characterized by the presence of prominent pores in the cephalic lateral line system; an incomplete lateral line; 20–23 thin dark olivaceous bars on the body, often bifurcated from the dorsolateral region; a depressed head and body anterior to the dorsal fin origin; and an elongated suborbital flap arising in front of the nostril and extending to the anterior one-third of the eye diameter in males.  相似文献

The mutual effects of several fouling species (the bivalves Mytilus edulis and Hiatella arctica and a solitary ascidian Styela rustica) on their growth rate and mortality were studied through field experiments. The interactions between S. rustica and H. arctica appeared to be the least antagonistic. In contrast, the mussel was the most “aggressive” species with regard to both competitors. It was observed that the ascidians died, because they were intensively braided and gummed up with the byssus threads of the mussels. However, in some cases the intraspecific competition was stronger than the interspecific one.  相似文献

Yanliaoa is a common fossil in the Middle Jurassic of western Liaoning, eastern Inner Mongolia and northern Hebei Province, China. It is an important element of the Yanliao biota. The genus was established by Pan in 1977 for fossil plants from the Middle Jurassic Haifanggou Formation in Xiasanjiaochengzi, western Liaoning Province, and in present paper, the genus Yanliaoa is studied based on new material. Pan never designated a type specimen and his fossil material cannot be located. We designate a type specimen here for Yanliaoa, so that the genus name Yanliaoa remains valid. Yanliaoa sinensis Pan emend. Tan et al., is found in the same locality and formation as the lost specimens, Y. sinensis of Pan, 1977. Yanliaoa daohugouensis n. sp., a new species with epidermal anatomy, is from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou, Inner Mongolia. A holotype is also selected from the new material for this new species. Characters of the leafy shoots and ovulate cones of Yanliaoa are emended. The epidermal anatomy of this genus is described for the first time. Compared with other extant and extinct species of Cupressaceae s. l., the current species can be distinguished from any known species both by the leafy shoot characters and its epidermal anatomy. It further indicates that Yanliaoa is an extinct and endemic conifer found in the Middle Jurassic of northeastern China.  相似文献

The impacts of different concentrations of the excretory-secretory products (ESPs) of the solitary ascidian Styela rustica (Linnaeus, 1767) and the sponge Halichondria panacea (Pallas, 1766) on the settlement, metamorphosis, and mortality rates of H. panacea larvae were studied in a laboratory experiment. At high concentrations, substances released into the environment by the ascidian S. rustica exerted a negative impact on the metamorphosis rate of sponge larvae. The exposure to moderate or high concentrations of ESPs from conspecific adults led to high mortality of larval sponges; however, low conspecific ESP concentrations markedly stimulated metamorphosis; larval mortality was low. Apparently, different concentrations of the same ESPs can have effects with a different strength and focus. This should be taken into account in the study of chemically mediated interactions between aquatic organisms.  相似文献
