The responses of respiration and photosynthesis to temperature fluctuations in marine macroalgae have the potential to significantly affect coastal carbon fluxes and sequestration. In this study, the marine red macroalga Gracilaria lemaneiformis was cultured at three different temperatures (12, 19, and 26°C) and at high‐ and low‐nitrogen (N) availability, to investigate the acclimation potential of respiration and photosynthesis to temperature change. Measurements of respiratory and photosynthetic rates were made at five temperatures (7°C–33°C). An instantaneous change in temperature resulted in a change in the rates of respiration and photosynthesis, and the temperature sensitivities (i.e., the Q10 value) for both the metabolic processes were lower in 26°C‐grown algae than 12°C‐ or 19°C‐grown algae. Both respiration and photosynthesis acclimated to long‐term changes in temperature, irrespective of the N availability under which the algae were grown; respiration displayed strong acclimation, whereas photosynthesis only exhibited a partial acclimation response to changing growth temperatures. The ratio of respiration to gross photosynthesis was higher in 12°C‐grown algae, but displayed little difference between the algae grown at 19°C and 26°C. We propose that it is unlikely that respiration in G. lemaneiformis would increase significantly with global warming, although photosynthesis would increase at moderately elevated temperatures.  相似文献

Calcified microbial microfossils—often interpreted as cyanobacteria—were important components of Precambrian and Paleozoic limestones, but their paucity in modern marine environments complicates our ability to make conclusive interpretations about their taxonomic affinity and geologic significance. Freshwater spring‐associated limestones (e.g., travertine and tufa) serve as terrestrial analogs to investigate mineralization in and around aquatic biofilms on observable timescales. We document the diagenesis of calcite fabrics associated with the freshwater algae Oocardium stratum, an epiphytic colonial green algae (desmid) known for producing stalks of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and passively producing a bifurcating tubular calcite monocrystal. Bifurcating EPS stalks produced by Oocardium colonies can become calcified and preserved in ancient carbonate deposits. Calcified micritic EPS stalks have a filamentous morphology, show evidence of branching, and maintain uniformity in diameter thickness throughout the mm‐scale colony, much like the enigmatic calcimicrobe Epiphyton. We provide a mechanism by which calcification associated with a colonial semispherical micro‐organism produces microfossils that deceptively resemble filamentous forms. These findings have implications for the use of morphological traits when assigning taxonomic affinities to extinct microfossil groups and highlight the utility of calcifying freshwater modern environments to investigate microbial taphonomy.  相似文献

Prominent bands or lines were present on colonies of Millepora complanata on coral reefs at Barbados, West Indies. These bands appeared as regular, dark and light horizontal zones or stripes on vertically growing plates and blades making up the colonies. Bands are formed by wave-like undulations or currugations of the skeletal surface. The number of bands correlates with colony height and mean band width equals the mean annual vertical growth of measured colonies. Variation in annual growth and differences in growth rates of colonies between different reefs were determined from band width measurements. Bands provide a rapid and non-destructive means for measuring growth and ageing colonies of M. complanata.  相似文献

The short‐term and long‐term effects of elevated CO2 on photosynthesis and respiration were examined in cultures of the marine brown macroalga Hizikia fusiformis (Harv.) Okamura grown under ambient (375 μL · L?1) and elevated (700 μL · L?1) CO2 concentrations and at low and high N availability. Short‐term exposure to CO2 enrichment stimulated photosynthesis, and this stimulation was maintained with prolonged growth at elevated CO2, regardless of the N levels in culture, indicating no down‐regulation of photosynthesis with prolonged growth at elevated CO2. However, the photosynthetic rate of low‐N‐grown H. fusiformis was more responsive to CO2 enrichment than that of high‐N‐grown algae. Elevation of CO2 concentration increased the value of K1/2(Ci) (the half‐saturation constant) for photosynthesis, whereas high N supply lowered it. Neither short‐term nor long‐term CO2 enrichment had inhibitory effects on respiration rate, irrespective of the N supply, under which the algae were grown. Under high‐N growth, the Q10 value of respiration was higher in the elevated‐CO2‐grown algae than the ambient‐CO2‐grown algae. Either short‐ or long‐term exposure to CO2 enrichment decreased respiration as a proportion of gross photosynthesis (Pg) in low‐N‐grown H. fusiformis. It was proposed that in a future world of higher atmospheric CO2 concentration and simultaneous coastal eutrophication, the respiratory carbon flux would be more sensitive to changing temperature.  相似文献

Unicellular green algae have a dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrating mechanism, commonly known as the DIC pump, to concentrate inorganic carbon into cells and chloroplasts. The DIC pump activity is normally measured as the K0.5(DIC) that equals the CO2 plus HCO3‐ concentration at a cited pH at which the rate of DIC‐dependent photosynthetic O2 evolution is half‐maximal, or by the amount of intra‐cellular DIC accumulation in 15–60 s, using a limited amount of NaH14CO3, measured by the silicone oil cen‐trifugation technique. The dissolved oxygen in the assay inhibits or reduces the DIC uptake by the cells of unicellular green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dangeard, strain 137 and in a cell wall‐less marine algae Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher. The algal cells concentrated the highest amount of DIC when little or no oxygen was present in the assay medium. The results suggest that the amount of O2 and DIC must be carefully monitored before DIC‐pump assay.  相似文献

Light and dark bands in fully recrystallized fossil hermatypic corals are generally interpreted to represent annual growth increments reflecting a photosymbiotic life style—an interpretation of far reaching significance in palaeoecology. In this paper we describe annual growth bands in the colonial coral Porites in a perfect (aragonite and microstructures retained) and fully recrystallized (sparry calcite mosaic) style of preservation from sediments of Late Miocene age (Crete, Greece). Analysis of a continuous spectrum of transitional preservational stages shows that in Miocene Porites preservation of the growth banding was controlled by preferential dissolution of the high-density band associated with cementation by drusy calcite spar during freshwater diagenesis/shallow burial diagenesis. Marine precipitates (pelletoidal Mg-calcite) preferentially accumulated along tabulate dissepiments producing an additional growth rhythmicity. Massive Porites had annual growth rates of ∼4.0 mm, whereas in ramose branching Porites, a conspicuous banding is formed by concentrations of marine micropelletoidal cement along dissepiments at ∼1.8 mm spacing. If taken as annual growth increments, these bands represent very low extension rates, however, they may rather reflect subannual forcing functions (i.e., lunar cycles). An identical scenario of precipitation and concentration of pelletoidal carbonate along dissepiments and dissolution-controlled documentation of growth bands can be inferred for Late Jurassic microsolenids. Therefore, growth bandings in fossil corals potentially reflect both, monthly and annual cycles. Consequently, care must be taken when using coral growth bands in palaeoecology and palaeoclimatology.  相似文献

Movement away from an area or social group in response to increasing density (density‐dependent dispersal) is known for most species; why it evolves is fundamental to our understanding of ecology and evolution. However, we have yet to fully appreciate how individuals of varying conditions (e.g., age and sex) might differently consider effects of density (quorum) when deciding to disperse or not, and scale dependence in their sense of quorum. We tracked movements of all individuals of a naturalized population of feral horses (Equus ferus caballus; Sable Island National Park Reserve, Nova Scotia, Canada) during a period of rapid population growth (N increased from 375 to 484 horses from 2008 to 2010). Permanent dispersal from breeding groups (bands) was positively density dependent for all age and sex categories with respect to local density (horses/km2, bounded by the 99th percentile of individual movements [8000 m]), but was negatively and positively density dependent for males and females, respectively, in relation to group (band) size. Dispersal was generally female biased, with the exception of foals which moved with their mothers (no sex effect), and for yearlings and subadults when band sizes were smaller than average, in which case males dispersed at higher rates than females. Dispersal distance was positively related to local density. We conclude that dispersal rate can be both positively and negatively density dependent for feral horses, contingent on the state of individuals and the scale at which quorum with respect to choosing to disperse or not is assessed. Scale effects and interactions of density‐dependent and sex‐ and age‐biased dispersal may have both ecological and evolutionary consequences through effects on resource and mate competition.  相似文献

Coralline algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) that form rhodoliths are important ecosystem engineers and carbonate producers in many polar coastal habitats. This study deals with rhodolith communities from Floskjeret (78°18′N), Krossfjorden (79°08′N), and Mosselbukta (79°53′N), off Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. Strong seasonal variations in temperature, salinity, light regime, sea-ice coverage, and turbidity characterize these localities. The coralline algal flora consists of Lithothamnion glaciale and Phymatolithon tenue. Well-developed rhodoliths were recorded between 27 and 47 m water depth, while coralline algal encrustations on lithoclastic cobbles were detected down to 77 m water depth. At all sites, ambient waters were saturated with respect to both aragonite and calcite, and the rhodolith beds were located predominately at dysphotic water depths. The rhodolith-associated macrobenthic fauna included grazing organisms such as chitons and echinoids. With decreasing water depth, the rhodolith pavements were regularly overgrown by non-calcareous Polysiphonia-like red algae. The corallines are thriving and are highly specialized in their adaptations to the physical environment as well as in their interaction with the associated benthic fauna, which is similar to other polar rhodolith communities. The marine environment of Spitsbergen is already affected by a climate-driven ecological regime shift and will lead to an increased borealization in the near future, with presently unpredictable consequences for coralline red algal communities.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) is the major nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth and productivity over large ocean areas. Dinoflagellates are important primary producers and major causative agents of harmful algal blooms in the ocean. However, very little is known about their adaptive response to changing ambient N. Here, we compared the protein profiles of a marine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum donghaiense grown in inorganic N‐replete, N‐deplete and N‐resupplied conditions using 2‐D fluorescence differential gel electrophoresis. The results showed that cell density, chlorophyll a and particulate organic N contents presented low levels in N‐deplete cells, while particulate organic carbon content and glutamine synthetase (GS) activity maintained high levels. Comparison of the protein profiles of N‐replete, N‐deplete and N‐resupplied cells indicated that proteins involved in photosynthesis, carbon fixation, protein and lipid synthesis were down‐regulated, while proteins participating in N reallocation and transport activity were up‐regulated in N‐deplete cells. High expressions of GS and 60 kDa chaperonin as well as high GS activity in N‐deplete cells indicated their central role in N stress adaptation. Overall, in contrast with other photosynthetic eukaryotic algae, P. donghaiense possessed a specific ability to regulate intracellular carbon and N metabolism in response to extreme ambient N deficiency.  相似文献

Magnesium content, strongly correlated with temperature, has been developed as a climate archive for the late Holocene without considering anatomical controls on Mg content. In this paper, we explore the ultrastructure and cellular scale Mg‐content variations within four species of North Atlantic crust‐forming Phymatolithon. The cell wall has radial grains of Mg‐calcite, whereas the interfilament (middle lamella) has grains aligned parallel to the filament axis. The proportion of interfilament and cell wall carbonate varies by tissue and species. Three distinct primary phases of Mg‐calcite were identified: interfilament Mg‐calcite (mean 8.9 mol% MgCO3), perithallial cell walls Mg‐calcite (mean 13.4 mol% MgCO3), and hypothallium Mg‐calcite (mean 17.1 mol% MgCO3). Magnesium content for the bulk crust, an average of all phases present, showed a strongly correlated (R2 = 0.975) increase of 0.31 mol% MgCO3 per °C. Of concern for climate reconstructions is the potential for false warming signals from undetected postgrazing wound repair carbonate that is substantially enriched in Mg, unrelated to temperature. Within a single crust, Mg‐content of component carbonates ranged from 8 to 20 mol% MgCO3, representing theoretical thermodynamic stabilities from aragonite‐equivalent to unstable higher‐Mg‐calcite. It is unlikely that existing current predictions of ocean acidification impact on coralline algae, based on saturation states calculated using average Mg contents, provide an environmentally relevant estimate.  相似文献

Growth bands are alternate dark/light bands perpendicular to the feather rachis. Previous studies indicate that pairs of dark/light bands are grown every 24h, with light bands being produced at night, and dark ones during the day. Thus, the dark:light width ratio could reflect the photoperiod under which a feather was grown. We tested this hypothesis by inducing feathers to grow under contrasting photoperiods, using red‐legged partridges Alectoris rufa as a model species. We first validated the assumption that a pair of dark/light band is produced every day. Secondly, we show that dark/light width ratios remain close to 1:1, irrespective of the photoperiod under which feathers were grown. Dark:light width ratios of feathers grown in summer (15 light‐hours: 9 darkness‐hours) and winter solstices (9l: 15d) did not show any consistent pattern of variation within individuals. Thus, the dark/light banding patterns are not simply the product of light regimes and are not indicative of photoperiod. This finding, together with reports of “aberrant” growth band patterns (e.g. two growth bands produced over 24 h instead of one) challenges our current knowledge of growth bands. We propose that the normal circadian periodicity of growth bands is primarily driven by circadian rhythms: band formation starts at a point of critically low physiological activity (e.g. during night resting), and thus every 24 h irrespective of photoperiod. Our experiment emphasises that our knowledge of growth bands is weaker than previously appreciated, and that the study of dark/light band patterns on feathers could shed new light on interesting phenomena such as unusual avian biological rhythms and the functioning of internal clocks. Detecting “aberrant” banding patterns could therefore allow identifying bird species with unusual activity patterns or physiological rhythms.  相似文献

The cheilostome bryozoan Pentapora, an important benthic carbonate producer on non-tropical continental shelves, displays seasonal variations in deposition of the calcareous skeleton reflected by ‘winter’ and ‘summer’ growth bands. Studies on colonies from Atlantic and Mediterranean localities show that the ratio of the heights of these growth bands correlates significantly with mean annual range of temperature (MART) and mean annual temperature (MAT). The locality with the lowest MART and MAT showed the greatest wt% of calcite in the winter growth band. The opposite was true for the locality with the highest MART and MAT. Carbonate standing stock and carbonate production estimated for Atlantic localities were an order of magnitude lower than those measured at Mediterranean localities. Variability in skeletal carbonate depositional pattern and mineralogy suggests that fossil and historical collections of Pentapora may be useful indicators of past thermal conditions.  相似文献

The articulated coralline Calliarthron cheilosporioides Manza produces segmented fronds composed of calcified segments (intergenicula) separated by uncalcified joints (genicula), which allow fronds to bend and reorient under breaking waves in the wave‐swept intertidal zone. Genicula are formed when calcified cells decalcify and restructure to create flexible tissue. The present study has identified important differences in the main agaran disaccharidic repeating units [→3)‐β‐d ‐Galp (1→ 4)‐α‐l ‐Galp(1→] synthesized by genicular and intergenicular segments. Based on chemical and spectroscopical analyses, we report that genicular cells from C. cheilosporioides biosynthesize a highly methoxylated galactan at C‐6 position with low levels of branching with xylose side stubs on C‐6 of the [→3)‐β‐d ‐Galp (1→] units, whereas intergenicular segments produce xylogalactans with high levels of xylose and low levels of 6‐O‐methyl β‐d ‐Gal units. These data suggest that, during genicular development, xylosyl branched, 3‐linked β‐d ‐Galp units present in the xylogalactan backbones from intergenicular walls are mostly replaced by 6‐O‐methyl‐d‐ galactose units. We speculate that this structural shift is a consequence of a putative and specific methoxyl transferase that blocks the xylosylation on C‐6 of the 3‐linked β‐d ‐Galp units. Changes in galactan substitutions may contribute to the distinct mechanical properties of genicula and may lend insight into the calcification process in coralline algae.  相似文献

Modern microbialites in Pavilion Lake, BC, provide an analog for ancient non‐stromatolitic microbialites that formed from in situ mineralization. Because Pavilion microbialites are mineralizing under the influence of microbial communities, they provide insights into how biological processes influence microbialite microfabrics and mesostructures. Hemispherical nodules and micrite–microbial crusts are two mesostructures within Pavilion microbialites that are directly associated with photosynthetic communities. Both filamentous cyanobacteria in hemispherical nodules and branching filamentous green algae in micrite–microbial crusts were associated with calcite precipitation at microbialite surfaces and with characteristic microfabrics in the lithified microbialite. Hemispherical nodules formed at microbialite surfaces when calcite precipitated around filamentous cyanobacteria with a radial growth habit. The radial filament pattern was preserved within the microbialite to varying degrees. Some subsurface nodules contained well‐defined filaments, whereas others contained only dispersed organic inclusions. Variation in filament preservation is interpreted to reflect differences in timing and amount of carbonate precipitation relative to heterotrophic decay, with more defined filaments reflecting greater lithification prior to degradation than more diffuse filaments. Micrite–microbial crusts produce the second suite of microfabrics and form in association with filamentous green algae oriented perpendicular to the microbialite surface. Some crusts include calcified filaments, whereas others contained voids that reflect the filamentous community in shape, size, and distribution. Pavilion microbialites demonstrate that microfabric variation can reflect differences in lithification processes and microbial metabolisms as well as microbial community morphology and organization. Even when the morphology of individual filaments or cells is not well preserved, the microbial growth habit can be captured in mesoscale microbialite structures. These results suggest that when petrographic preservation is extremely good, ancient microbialite growth structures and microfabrics can be interpreted in the context of variation in community organization, community composition, and lithification history. Even in the absence of distinct microbial microfabrics, mesostructures can capture microbial community morphology.  相似文献

Chondrus crispus Stackhouse (Gigartinales) is a red seaweed found on North Atlantic rocky shores. Electrophoresis of RNA extracts showed a prominent band with a size of around 6,000 bp. Sequencing of the band revealed several sequences with similarity to totiviruses, double‐stranded RNA viruses that normally infect fungi. This virus‐like entity was named C. crispus virus (CcV). It should probably be regarded as an extreme viral quasispecies or a mutant swarm since low identity (<65%) was found between sequences. Totiviruses typically code for two genes: one capsid gene (gag) and one RNA‐dependent RNA polymerase gene (pol) with a pseudoknot structure between the genes. Both the genes and the intergenic structures were found in the CcV sequences. A nonidentical gag gene was also found in the nuclear genome of C. crispus, with associated expressed sequence tags (EST) and upstream regulatory features. The gene was presumably horizontally transferred from the virus to the alga. Similar dsRNA bands were seen in extracts from different life cycle stages of C. crispus and from all geographic locations tested. In addition, similar bands were also observed in RNA extractions from other red algae; however, the significance of this apparently widespread phenomenon is unknown. Neither phenotype caused by the infection nor any virus particles or capsid proteins were identified; thus, the presence of viral particles has not been validated. These findings increase the known host range of totiviruses to include marine red algae.  相似文献

This note is to call attention to a number of marine algal taxa from the Antilles that were described by Placide Duchassaing in his 1850 work Animaux radiaires des Antilles. The mid‐19th century was a period when the distinction between marine invertebrates and some calcified benthic marine algae was still not always clear. The names of these algal taxa were validated, although no figures or details on their specific provenance were provided, other than they were from Duchassaing's collections from the Antilles. Duchassaing assigned his new algal species to the following genera: Galaxaura, Amphiroa, Jania, Melobesia and Nullipora. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Temperature is one of the major environmental factors that affect the distribution, growth rate, and life cycle of intertidal organisms, including red algae. In an effort to identify the genes involved in the high‐temperature tolerance of Porphyra, we generated 3,979 expression sequence tags (ESTs) from gametophyte thalli of P. seriata Kjellm. under normal growth conditions and high‐temperature conditions. A comparison of the ESTs from two cDNA libraries allowed us to identify the high temperature response (HTR) genes, which are induced or up‐regulated as the result of high‐temperature treatment. Among the HTRs, HTR2 encodes for a small polypeptide consisting of 144 amino acids, which is a noble nuclear protein. Chlamydomonas expressing the Porphyra HTR2 gene shows higher survival and growth rates than the wild‐type strain after high‐temperature treatment. These results suggest that HTR2 may be relevant to the tolerance of high‐temperature stress conditions, and this Porphyra EST data set will provide important genetic information for studies of the molecular basis of high‐temperature tolerance in marine algae, as well as in Porphyra.  相似文献

Solenopora jurassica is a fossil calcareous alga that functioned as an important reef-building organism during the Palaeozoic. It is of significant palaeobiological interest due to its distinctive but poorly understood pink and white banding. Though widely accepted as an alga there is still debate over its taxonomic affinity, with recent work arguing that it should be reclassified as a chaetetid sponge. The banding is thought to be seasonal, but there is no conclusive evidence for this. Other recent work has, however demonstrated the presence of a unique organic boron-containing pink/red pigment in the pink bands of S. jurassica. We present new geochemical evidence concerning the seasonality and pigmentation of S. jurassica. Seasonal growth cycles are demonstrated by X-ray radiography, which shows differences in calcite density, and by varying δ13C composition of the bands. Temperature variation in the bands is difficult to constrain accurately due to conflicting patterns arising from Mg/Ca molar ratios and δ18O data. Fluctuating chlorine levels indicate increased salinity in the white bands, when combined with the isotope data this suggests more suggestive of marine conditions during formation of the white band and a greater freshwater component (lower chlorinity) during pink band precipitation (δ18O). Increased photosynthesis is inferred within the pink bands in comparison to the white, based on δ13C. Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (Py-GCMS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) show the presence of tetramethyl pyrrole, protein moieties and carboxylic acid groups, suggestive of the presence of the red algal pigment phycoerythrin. This is consistent with the pink colour of S. jurassica. As phycoerythrin is only known to occur in algae and cyanobacteria, and no biomarker evidence of bacteria or sponges was detected we conclude S. jurassica is most likely an alga. Pigment analysis may be a reliable classification method for fossil algae.  相似文献
