The present study was focused to examine diversity and distributional pattern of freshwater snails and to identify the schistosome infected snails in ten different ponds of Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, South India. Snails were collected from native substrates in ponds using dip net from Madurai North, Tamil Nadu province of south India and microscopic examination for detecting cercariae larvae in snails were assessed. In total, 1250 individuals belonging to six species under five families of freshwater snails were collected. The alpha and beta diversity analyses were calculated for estimating the diversity of snails. The cercariae infection was observed in four collected freshwater snail species. Of four infected snails, Lymnaea luteola had the highest percentage of cercariae infection. Statistical tests showed that the environmental factors of total dissolved solids, pH and salinity were significantly related with snail distribution and cercariae infection rather than spatial factor. The study demonstrated that the salinity, conductivity and total dissolved solids of pond water play a key factor for the distribution of snails and cercariae infection. The findings of our study will improve the understanding of the dynamics of schistosomiasis transmission and would ease the implementation of integrated disease control measures based on ecological knowledge of schistosomiasis vector in Madurai and Tamil Nadu zones.  相似文献

Background

Fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FZT) are a food safety and health concern in Vietnam. Humans and other final hosts acquire these parasites from eating raw or under-cooked fish with FZT metacercariae. Fish raised in ponds are exposed to cercariae shed by snail hosts that are common in fish farm ponds. Previous risk assessment on FZT transmission in the Red River Delta of Vietnam identified carp nursery ponds as major sites of transmission. In this study, we analyzed the association between snail population density and heterophyid trematode infection in snails with the rate of FZT transmission to juvenile fish raised in carp nurseries.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Snail population density and prevalence of trematode (Heterophyidae) infections were determined in 48 carp nurseries producing Rohu juveniles, (Labeo rohita) in the Red River Delta area. Fish samples were examined at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after the juvenile fish were introduced into the ponds. There was a significant positive correlation between prevalence of FZT metacercariae in juvenile fish and density of infected snails. Thus, the odds of infection in juvenile fish were 4.36 and 11.32 times higher for ponds with medium and high density of snails, respectively, compared to ponds where no infected snails were found. Further, the intensity of fish FZT infections increased with the density of infected snails. Interestingly, however, some ponds with no or few infected snails were collected also had high prevalence and intensity of FZT in juvenile fish. This may be due to immigration of cercariae into the pond from external water sources.

Conclusions/Significance

The total number and density of potential host snails and density of host snails infected with heterophyid trematodes in the aquaculture pond is a useful predictor for infections in juvenile fish, although infection levels in juvenile fish can occur despite low density or absence infected snails. This suggests that intervention programs to control FZT infection of fish should include not only intra-pond snail control, but also include water sources of allochthonous cercariae, i.e. canals supplying water to ponds as well as snail habitats outside the pond such as rice fields and surrounding ponds.  相似文献

Introduction

There is increasing interest in the control and elimination of schistosomiasis. Little is known, however, about the likely effects of increasing water-body temperatures on transmission.

Methods

We have developed an agent-based model of the temperature-sensitive stages of the Schistosoma and intermediate host snail life-cycles, parameterised using data from S. mansoni and Biomphalaria pfeifferi laboratory and field-based observations. Infection risk is calculated as the number of cercariae in the model, adjusted for their probability of causing infection.

Results

The number of snails in the model is approximately constant between 15–31°C. Outside this range, snail numbers drop sharply, and the snail population cannot survive outside the range 14–32°C. Mean snail generation time decreases with increasing temperature from 176 days at 14°C to 46 days at 26°C. Human infection risk is highest between 16–18°C and 1 pm and 6–10 pm in calm water, and 20–25°C and 12–4 pm in flowing water. Infection risk increases sharply when temperatures increase above the minimum necessary for sustained transmission.

Conclusions

The model suggests that, in areas where S. mansoni is already endemic, warming of the water at transmission sites will have differential effects on both snails and parasites depending on abiotic properties of the water-body. Snail generation times will decrease in most areas, meaning that snail populations will recover faster from natural population reductions and from snail-control efforts. We suggest a link between the ecological properties of transmission sites and infection risk which could significantly affect the outcomes of interventions designed to alter water contact behaviour – proposing that such interventions are more likely to reduce infection levels at river locations than lakes, where infection risk remains high for longer. In cooler areas where snails are currently found, increasing temperatures may significantly increase infection risk, potentially leading to new, high-intensity foci of infection.  相似文献

Densities of Schistosoma mansoni miracidia and cercariae in natural habitats in three St. Lucian valleys were monitored over a 3-year period by exposure of sentinel snails, Biomphalaria glabrata, and a cercariometric technique, supplemented by sampling of field snails. Separate measures for control of S. mansoni transmission were under evaluation in two of the valleys. Sentinel snails became infected sporadically and their infection rates per valley ranged from 0·12% to 4·99%. S. mansoni miracidial inoculation rates ranged from 1 to over 4 per infected sentinel snail. Combined rainfall of more than 3 in on the day before any day of sentinel snail exposure interfered with miracidium-snail interaction. Densities of S. mansoni cercariae ranged from 0·05 to 21 per litre of water sampled. The number of cercariae detected in a habitat by cercariometry was directly proportional to the number of infected field snails. Sentinel snail infection rates exhibited a downward and an upward trend, respectively, in the controlled and uncontrolled areas, although the changes were not significant statistically.  相似文献

Exposure of Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Schistosoma mansoni to 14C-glucose results in a greater uptake of original total snail label by the parasitized digestive gland-gonad, site of the developing daughter sporocysts and cercariae, than by the digestive gland-gonad of control animals. As a consequence of this greater uptake by the infected digestive gland-gonad, the albumen gland and remainder of the carcass of parasitized snails receive less label than do those areas in normal snails. Emergence of cercariae from the snail and daughter sporocyst mass account for a diversion of 12.6% of original total label from the infected snail itself. This diversion of label from the snail to the parasite may explain carbohydrate depletion in parasitized snails.  相似文献

BackgroundOncomelania snails serve as the sole intermediate host for Schistosoma japonicum, one of the most important neglected tropical diseases in the world. Afforestation suppression of the Oncomelania hupensis snail has been a long-term effective national strategy to decrease snail density in China. Many previous studies have made clear that vegetation (biotic factors) and soil (abiotic factors) were the basic requirements for snail survival on beaches. Moreover, a lot of research on snail control has been focused on the specific influencing environmental factors for snail survival, such as the vegetation community structure, species composition, diversity index, and the physical and chemical properties of the soil. Most of the existing research has studied the influence of a single factor on snail population density. Conversely, there have been only a few studies focused on the food sources and food composition of the snails. The current research situation on snail control has indicated that the mechanisms underlying ecological snail control have not been systematically characterized. The question of whether biotic or abiotic factors were more important in influencing snail survival remains unclear. Afforestation on beaches has significantly suppressed snail density in China so far. In this study, we proposed that the reduction of snail density was not affected by a single factor but by the interactions of multiple related factors introduced by afforestation. Moreover, different biotic and abiotic factors have significantly different effects on snail control. Therefore the goal of this study was to evaluate the relative importance and interactions of related biotic and abiotic factors on snail density. Methods: Four major vegetation communities: Sedge, Reed, Artificial poplar (3 years of age) and Artificial poplar (5 years of age), on the beaches of the Yangtze River in China were selected for vegetation and snail surveys, as well as for soil sampling. Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis was used to assess the interactions of biotic and abiotic factors in the context of snail ecology. The soil properties were considered as abiotic factors, while algae of Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta phyla were considered to be biotic factors. In the path analysis, the total effect between the variables was the sum of the direct and indirect effects.ResultsThe snail density had significant correlations with soil properties, such as water content, bulk density, capillary porosity and pH value, as well as with all three types of soil algae, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, and Bacillariophyta. Snail density had a direct negative relationship with capillary porosity and soil bulk density, an indirect negative relationship with soil pH value and an indirect positive relationship with soil water content via soil algae. Meanwhile, as an important food source for the snail, the Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta algae had a significant positive correlation with snail density. High soil pH had a negative impact on Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, while soil water content had a positive impact on Chlorophyta, and soil bulk density had a negative impact on Cyanophyta. In addition, the soil pH value and soil bulk density both had negative correlations with soil water content.ConclusionAfforestation of the beach environment can significantly reduce the snail population density by altering ecological factors. Soil algae (biological factors) might be the key element that drives ecological snail control. As important habitat determinants, the impact of the properties of the soil (non-biological factors) on the snail population was largely mediated through soil algae.  相似文献

There is a need for recent information on intermediate snail hosts of schistosomes in The Gambia; the previous studies were conducted over three decades ago. This study assessed the incidence, species diversity, distribution and infection status of schistosome intermediate snail hosts in the country. Malacological surveys were conducted in all 5 regions of The Gambia: Central River Region (CRR), Upper River Region (URR), Western Region (WR), Lower River Region (LRR) and North Bank Region (NBR). Sampling of snails was undertaken at 114 sites that included permanent water bodies such as streams (bolongs), rice fields, irrigation canals and swamps; and temporal (seasonal) laterite pools. Ecological and physicochemical factors of sites were recorded. Snails were identified morphologically and screened for schistosome infections using molecular techniques. Freshwater snails were found at more than 50% (60/114) of sites sampled. While three species of Bulinus were collected, no Biomphalaria snails were found in any of the sites sampled. Of the total 2877 Bulinus snails collected, 75.9% were identified as Bulinus senegalensis, 20.9% as Bulinus forskalii and 3.2% as Bulinus truncatus. Seasonal pools produced the largest number of snails, and CRR was the region with the largest number of snails. Bulinus senegalensis was found more in seasonal pools as opposed to permanent sites, where B. forskalii and B. truncatus were observed to thrive. Bulinus snails were more common in seasonal sites where aquatic vegetation was present. In permanent sites, the abundance of snails increased with increase in water temperature and decrease in water pH. Bulinus senegalensis was found infected with both S. haematobium and S. bovis, while B. forskalii and B. truncatus had only S. bovis infection. While the human parasite S. haematobium was restricted to just four sites, the livestock parasite S. bovis had a much more widespread geographical distribution across both CRR and URR. This new information on the distribution of intermediate snail hosts of schistosomes in The Gambia will be vital for the national schistosomiasis control initiative.  相似文献

Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts originally derived from monomiracidially infected Biomphalaria glabrata snails were serially transplanted into the cephalopedal sinus of anesthetized snails by the microsurgical implantation of fragments of parasitized hepato-pancreas and ovotestis. Three to six passages each of five male and five female clones were maintained for as long as 2.0 years. Of the recipient snails which survived surgery, 87% released cercariae, usually beginning 5–7 weeks after surgery. The percentage of snails which released cercariae increased with successive passages. The mean survival time of surgically infected snails after cercarial emergence began was 9.2 ± 0.5 weeks, nearly the same as that of miracidially infected snails. Longevities of snails infected with male or female clones were similar. Recipient snail size and age did not influence cloning success. Beginning 5 weeks from the onset of cercarial emergence large numbers of cercariae (a mean of 3900/snail from male clones and 1300/snail from females) were obtained during each shedding period. These results clearly demonstrate that the microsurgical transplantation of sporocysts is a practical means of maintaining and expanding populations of genetically homogeneous schistosomes (clones).  相似文献

Indoplanorbis exustus is the intermediate snail host of both Schistosoma nasale and S. spindale in Sri Lanka. Due to the similar morphology of the cercariae difficulties exist in identifying the species of schistosome infecting snails at transmission sites. Isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gels of malate dehydrogenase, glucose phosphate isomerase, phosphoglucomutase and acid phosphatase has been carried out on extracts of cercariae and potentially useful diagnostic markers have been identified. Cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis has been used to separate two glucose phosphate isomerase phenotypes each of which appears to be diagnostic for one of the species. This simple electrophoretic technique has been used to identify schistosome infections in Indoplanorbis exustus collected at two transmission sites in Sri Lanka. Out of a total of 1,240 snails collected, 13 snails were shown to be infected with S. nasale, 19 with S. spindale and two snails were found to have mixed infections.  相似文献

A study of the freshwater gastropods in the Saint Lawrence river near Montreal was undertaken to characterize the populations living in the benthos and on the vegetation, and to define the effects of a deterioration of water quality.Ninety-eight samples, collected simultaneously from the benthos and on macrophytes, were expressed as the logarithm of each species' relative abundance. WPGMA clustering, principal coordinates and discriminant analysis were used to describe and characterize differences between samples. Diversity was also computed to show the transformations of population structure due to differences in pollution levels.Prosobranch snails predominated in benthic populations while pulmonates characterized vegetation. A decrease in the number of species was the characteristic response to increasing pollution levels upon both types of substrates. High hydrocarbon levels were related to a decrease in the diversity of snail populations on the vegetation only.Predominance of prosobranchs in the benthos and pulmonates on the vegetation could be explained by a differential dependence of those two groups of snails on the aquatic medium, and by considering modes of nutrition. Sporadic oil spills affected the snail populations living on macrophytes.

We conducted monthly snail captures in Bananal, State of S?o Paulo, Brazil, between March 1998 and February 2001, to identify Schistosoma mansoni vectors, estimate seasonal population changes, and delimit foci. We also evaluated the impact of improvements in city water supply and basic sanitation facilities. We identified 28,651 vector specimens, 28,438 as Biomphalaria tenagophila, 49 of them (0.2%) infected with S. mansoni, and 213 as B. straminea, none of the latter infected. Vectors predominated in water bodies having some vegetation along their banks. Neither population density nor local vegetation could be linked to vector infection. We found the first infected snails in 1998 (from March to May). Further captures of infected snails ocurred, without exception, from July to December, when rainfall was least. Irrespective of season, overall temperature ranged from 16.5 degrees C to 21 degrees C; pH values, from 6.0 to 6.8. Neither factor was associated with snail population density. Frequent contact of people with the river result from wading across it, extracting sand from its bottom, fishing, washing animals, etc. Despite a marked reduction in contamination, cercaria shedding persists. Whatever the location along its urban course, contact with river Bananal, particularly of the unprotected skin, entails risks of infection.  相似文献

A routine to maintain infected snails Biomphalaria glabrata able to produce 1-2 million cercariae per week and a mean shedding of about 3,500 cercariae per snail was quantitatively described. To a monthly production of about 5.3 and 6.5 million cercariae during the years of 1982 and 1983 it was necessary to expose an average of 1,557 and 1,957 snails, respectively. The efficiency described was maintained by infecting 2,000 snails per month (infectivity index of about 60%). A maximal production of 6,000 cercariae/snail was obtained in the period between 56-70 days after the snail infection by miracidia. By this period, however, 90% of the infected snails were dead. In the summer of 1982-1983 it was observed an impairment on the daily cercarial harvests which was related to ambient temperature increase, and the presence of rotifers in the aquaria water. When the cercariae were transformed into schistosomula in vitro, a yield of 55% schistosomula was obtained, with 7% of tail contamination. Lyophilization of cercariae produced 50.9 +/- 63 g dry weight per 1,000 cercariae.  相似文献

This paper discusses observations on the emergence of Schistosoma mansoni from the snail Biomphalaria glabrata exposed to manganese sulfate. Such treatment, when snails were exposed to a short pulse of light, terminated cercarial emergence. However, with 6 hr of light, a relatively large number of cercariae emerged, indicating that a long photoperiod can override manganese inhibition. Manganese also inhibited emergence of cercariae from the sporocyst and retarded maturation of developing cercariae. Coincidental observations indicated that manganese exerts a prolonged anesthetic and relaxing action on the snail.  相似文献

Experimental infections of two South American lymnaeids (Lymnaea neotropica and L. viatrix var. ventricosa) with Paramphistomum daubneyi were carried out to determine if these snail species could sustain larval development of this digenean and, if so, to specify their potential for cercarial production. A French population of Galba truncatula infected and raised according to the same protocol served as controls. In both experiments, prevalence of P. daubneyi infections in snails did not significantly differ from each other. In snail groups evaluated for cercarial shedding (first experiment), a significantly lower number of shed cercariae was noted for L. neotropica, while those from G. truncatula and L. v. ventricosa did not differ significantly from each other. Dissection of infected snails at day 65 post-exposure at 20 °C (second experiment) found significantly lower burdens of P. daubneyi rediae and cercariae in the bodies of L. neotropica than in those of G. truncatula and L. v. ventricosa. Compared to total cercarial production observed in dissected snails, the percentage of cercariae which exited from snails was 75.6% for G. truncatula, 21.6% for L. neotropica, and 91.4% for L. v. ventricosa. This last species seems to be a good candidate for metacercarial production of P. daubneyi.  相似文献

The development of Echinostoma cinetorchis in several snail species reared in laboratory aquaria was observed. The eggs from adult flukes collected from the intestine of rats were cultivated to miracidia, and exposed to Hippeutis sp. snails. Observations were made for cercarial shedding from the exposed snails. The cercariae shed from the snails were again exposed to several species of fresh water snails in order to observe metacercarial formation in the snails and their infectivity to final hosts. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. Twenty miracidia were exposed to each snail of Hippeutis sp. About 58.3% of the above snails (7 out of 12) were dead before shedding the cercariae, and the remainder shed the cercariae for a period of 7 to 9 days before death. 2. Cercarial shedding from the infected snails started from the 25th day after the exposure to miracidia, and the total number of cercariae shed per snail was 684 in average (range; 482-904). 3. The size of rediae developed in the infected Hippeutis sp. snails was 1,242 x 214 microns in average, and the number of rediae per snail was 350 in average (range; 120-510). 4. About 40 to 50 cercariae shed from the Hippeutis sp. snails were each exposed to several species of snails reared in the laboratory. The metacercarial formation was confirmed by dissecting the infected snails, 12 to 16 days after the infection.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The subject of the following study was the natural and experimental invasion of trematode larvae in Potamopyrgus antipodarum from Bory Tucholskie National Park (Poland). Only one out of the 14,908 dissected specimens had oval sporocysts and mature cercariae of fish fluke, which belongs to the Sanguinicolidae family. It is the first recorded case in the European population of P. antipodarum living in inland water. The experimental study showed the possibility of native metacercariae (Echinostoma revolutum, Echinoparyphium aconiatum and Hypoderaeum conoideum) settlement in those immigrant snail species; however, exposure to parasites resulted in an increase in snail mortality. The three out of six used cercariae species were able to transform into metacercariae in P. antipodarum as in the second intermediate host, but the exposure to parasitic larvae of four of the used species resulted in an increase in snails’ mortality. It may suggest that not only metacercariae settlement but also the attack of cercariae (Rubenstrema opisthovitellinum at a temperature of 22 °C) affected the low survival of experimental snails in comparison to control animals. The subject of discussion presented in this paper is also the hypothesis on probable effect of the interaction between P. antipodarum and native snail species (as a source of invasive larvae of parasites) living in the same habitat.  相似文献

Digenean trematodes are common and abundant in aquatic habitats and their free-living larvae, the cercariae, have recently been recognized as important components of ecosystems in terms of comprising a significant proportion of biomass and in having a potentially strong influence on food web dynamics. One strategy to enhance their transmission success is to produce high numbers of cercariae which are available during the activity peak of the next host. In laboratory experiments with 13 Lymnaea stagnalis snails infected with Trichobilharzia szidati the average daily emergence rate per snail was determined as 2,621 cercariae, with a maximum of 29,560. During a snail’s lifetime this summed up to a mass equivalent of or even exceeding the snail’s own body mass. Extrapolated for the eutrophic pond where the snails were collected, annual T. szidati biomass may reach 4.65 tons, a value equivalent to a large Asian elephant. Emission peaks were observed after the onset of illumination, indicating emission synchronizing with the high morning activities of the definitive hosts, ducks. However, high cercarial emission is possible throughout the day under favorable lightning conditions. Therefore, although bird schistosomes, such as T. szidati constitute only a fraction of the diverse trematode communities in the studied aquatic ecosystem, their cercariae can still pose a considerable risk for humans of getting cercarial dermatitis (swimmer''s itch) due to the high number of cercariae emitted from infected snails.  相似文献

The genetic diversity of Schistosoma haematobium remains largely unstudied in comparison to that of Schistosoma mansoni. To characterize the extent of genetic diversity in S. haematobium among its definitive host (humans), we collected S. haematobium eggs from the urine of 73 infected schoolchildren at 5 primary schools in White Nile State, Sudan, and then performed a randomly amplified polymorphic DNA marker ITS2 by PCR-RFLP analysis. Among 73 S. haematobium egg-positive cases, 13 were selected based on the presence of the S. haematobium satellite markers A4 and B2 in their genomic DNA, and used for RFLP analysis. The 13 samples were subjected to an RFLP analysis of the S. haematobium ITS2 region; however, there was no variation in size among the fragments. Compared to the ITS2 sequences obtained for S. haematobium from Kenya, the nucleotide sequences of the ITS2 regions of S. haematobium from 4 areas in Sudan were consistent with those from Kenya (> 99%). In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that most of the S. haematobium population in Sudan consists of a pan-African S. haematobium genotype; however, we also report the discovery of Kenyan strain inflow into White Nile, Sudan.  相似文献

Summary The population dynamics of the prosobranch snail Planaxis sulcatus and its trematode parasites on 600 m of beachrock on the southern side of Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, were studied. Populations of Planaxis show little mixing, due to lack of long-distance movements. From March 1973 to June 1975, an increase in the numbers of small and medium-sized snails occurred, but the biomass (dry tissue weight) of the snail population did not change. Snails were infected with one species of Aspidogastrea and six species of cerariae. Infections with cercariae did not significantly affect the relative weight of the snails. Multiple infections were random, i.e. neither negative nor positive interactions between trematode species could be demonstrated. Proportions of uninfected snails and snails infected with various trematode species remained more or less constant from July 1973 to February 1975.The population dynamics of the prosobranch snail Cerithium moniliferum and its 11 species of cercariae and one species of Aspidogastrea in a small area at Heron Island were studied. Numbers of large snails decreased and numbers of small snails increased from August 1973 to June 1975. The biomass of the Cerithium population increased only slightly. Prevalence of infection changed significantly only in large snails.Infections of Cerithium moniliferum and Peristernia australiensis with an aspidogastrid species decreased strongly from January 1971 to March/April 1972 and had not recovered by mid 1975.Seasonal fluctuations could not be demonstrated for any of the snails or parasites. The data for Planaxis suggest equilibrium conditions and saturation of the habitat.  相似文献
