This paper presents new species, combinations, national reports and host records for the South African rust fungi (Uredinales/Pucciniales). Endophyllum mpenjatiense on cf. Hibiscus sp. (Malvaceae), Phakopsora combretorum (anamorph Uredo combreticola) on the new host Combretum apiculatum (Combretaceae) and Uredo sekhukhunensis on Ziziphus mucronata (Rhamnaceae) are described as new species. Dietelia cardiospermi and E. metalasiae are proposed as new combinations to replace Aecidium cardiospermi on Cardiospermum halicacabum (Sapindaceae) and A. metalasiae on Metalasia spp. (Asteraceae), respectively. Four species are new records for South Africa: Crossopsora antidesmae-dioicae on Antidesma venosum (Euphorbiaceae), Phakopsora ziziphi-vulgaris on Z. mucronata, and Uromyces cypericola and Puccinia subcoronata, both on a new host, Cyperus albostriatus (Cyperaceae). The record of P. subcoronata is the first one from outside the New World. Puccinia scirpi is reported as a possible addition to the South African rust fungi. New host records and observations are presented for Pucciniastrum agrimoniae that is recorded on two new host genera and species, Cliffortia odorata and Leucosidea sericea (Rosaceae), Uromyces cypericola whose urediniospores are described for the first time, Phakopsora stratosa in that spermogonia and Uredo-like aecia were discovered, and for Sphaerophragmium dalbergiae in that characters of the urediniospores are re-evaluated. A lectotype is selected for Aecidium garckeanum and spermogonia are reported for this rust for the first time. The rust fungi of Ehrharta (Poaceae) are discussed and critically evaluated in the light of spore morphology and host species.  相似文献

Investigation of material of British smut fungi held in the national collections at kew (k) undertaken during preparation of the new checklist of British and Irish Basidiomycota (Legon et al. 2005) identified several species not hitherto known from the British Isles. These include taxa not previously recognised due to earlier, broader species concepts, as well as others based on earlier misidentifications or discovered during examination of herbarium material of their host plants. These taxa are fully reported here. In addition, amendments to nomenclature and taxonomy of other British species which have occurred since the monography by Mordue & Ainsworth (1984) are summarised.  相似文献

The phylogenetic positions of Puccinia spp. infecting sugarcane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) were determined using 38 newly generated rust sequences and 26 sequences from GenBank. Rust specimens on sugarcane were collected from 164 locations in 23 countries and identified based on light microscopy. The morphology for all samples matched that of Puccinia kuehnii or P. melanocephala, the orange and brown rust pathogens of sugarcane, respectively. Nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences (rDNA) including portions of the 5.8S rDNA, the complete internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and 5′ region of the large subunit (nLSU) rDNA were obtained for each species along with 36 additional rust taxa. Despite a shared host, the two Puccinia spp. on sugarcane are not closely related within the Pucciniales. Phylogenetic analyses place P. melanocephala most closely to P. miscanthi, P. nakanishikii, and P. rufipes infecting Miscanthus sinensis, Cymbopogon citratus, and Imperata cylindrica, respectively. Puccinia kuehnii is basal to a clade of Poaceae-infecting rusts including P. agrophila, P. polysora, P. substriata, and Uromyces setariae-italicae infecting Schizachyrium spp., Zea mays, Digitaria spp., and Urochloa mosambicensis, respectively. Light and scanning electron microscopy images highlight morphological differences distinguishing the two sugarcane-infecting species. This study confirms the separation of rust species infecting Poaceae from Cyperaceae- and Juncaceae-infecting rusts and also provides support for the presence of an additional group that includes P. kuehnii and other grass-infecting relatives.  相似文献

Rust fungi are obligate biotrophic pathogens that differentiate a series of specialized cells to establish infection. One of these cells, the haustorium, which serves to absorb nutrients from living host cells, normally develops only in planta. Here, we show that the rust fungus Uromyces fabae (Pers.) Schroet. stimulates volatile emission of its host, broad bean (Vicia faba L.). Volatiles were identified and shown to be perceived by the fungus in in vitro assays that excluded the host. Three of them, nonanal, decanal, and hexenyl acetate promoted the development of haustoria on artificial membranes. In contrast, the terpenoid farnesyl acetate suppressed this differentiation. In assays using whole plants, farnesyl acetate reduced rust disease not only on broad bean but also on several cereals and legumes including soybean. This natural substance was effective against all rusts tested when directly applied to the host. This demonstrated that farnesyl acetate may serve as a powerful novel tool to combat rust fungi including Phakopsora pachyrhizi that currently threatens the production of soybeans world-wide.  相似文献

Notes on some rust fungi in Vietnam   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sixteen rust species and two unconnected Peridermium collected in Vietnam are enumerated. For all the rust species except Hemileia vastarix, Olivea tectonae, and Puccinia thwaitesii, these are the first records of their occurrence in Vietnam. Some taxonomic and pathological considerations are noted for two economically important pine stem rusts.  相似文献

Proceedings: Preservation of rust fungi in liquid nitrogen   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
J L Cunningham 《Cryobiology》1973,10(5):361-363
Spores of rust fungi can be expected to retain viability without loss of infectivity for at least several years when stored in liquid nitrogen (?196 °C). Addition of liquid suspending media is harmful and not necessary. Some rust fungi experience cold-induced dormancy when exposed to less than 0 °C for a minute or longer but germinability is dependably restored on applying a heat shock by heating the spores to 40 °C for at least 15 sec during or after thawing. Most rust fungi are not sensitive to moisture content at the time of freezing but Puccinia striiformis must be vacuum dried before freezimg. The need for heat shock may not show up until several days after thawing. All of the rust strains tested to date have retained their properties to the extent tested and for the duration of storage. Data are available for up to 11 years. Preliminary experiments to preserve saprophytic mycelial cultures of P. graminis have so far failed, with and without use of 10% glycerol and 5% DMSO. The successful preservation of rust spores has made feasible the development of a collection of living rust fungi at ATCC beginning in 1965 and which now has over 80 strains in 20 species in 7 genera.  相似文献

Inheritance studies on the nonhost resistance of plants would normally require interspecific crosses that suffer from sterility and abnormal segregation. Therefore, we developed the barley-Puccinia rust model system to study, using forward genetics, the specificity, number, and diversity of genes involved in nonhost resistance. We developed two mapping populations by crossing the line SusPtrit, with exceptional susceptibility to heterologous rust species, with the immune barley cultivars Vada and Cebada Capa. These two mapping populations along with the Oregon Wolfe Barley population, which showed unexpected segregation for resistance to heterologous rusts, were phenotyped with four heterologous rust fungal species. Positions of QTL conferring nonhost resistance in the three mapping populations were compared using an integrated consensus map. The results confirmed that nonhost resistance in barley to heterologous rust species is controlled by QTL with different and overlapping specificities and by an occasional contribution of an R-gene for hypersensitivity. In each population, different sets of loci were implicated in resistance. Few genes were common between the populations, suggesting a high diversity of genes conferring nonhost resistance to heterologous pathogens. These loci were significantly associated with QTL for partial resistance to the pathogen Puccinia hordei and with defense-related genes.  相似文献

Diseases caused by rust fungi pose a significant threat to global plant production. Although carotenoid pigments are produced in spores of nearly all rust species, the corresponding biosynthesis pathway(s) have not been investigated. Here, candidate genes for carotenoid biosynthesis in Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt) were identified, cloned and functionally complemented using specifically engineered strains of Escherichia coli. A part of the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway in rust fungi was elucidated, with only two genes, CrtYB and CrtI, catalysing the reactions from geranyl–geranyl diphosphate (GGPP) to γ-carotene. The CrtYB gene encodes a bi-functional lycopene cyclase/phytoene synthase, which catalyses the condensation of two GGPP into phytoene, as well as the cyclisation of the ψ-end of lycopene to form γ-carotene. The CrtI gene encodes a phytoene desaturase that carries out four successive desaturations of phytoene, through the intermediates phytofluene and neurosporene to lycopene. The evolution of carotenoid pigmentation in rust fungi, including Pgt, P. graminis avenae, P. graminis secalis (Pgs), P. graminis lolli, P. striiformis f. sp. tritici, P. striiformis f. sp. pseudohordei, P. striiformis f. sp. hordei, the “scabrum” rust (putative hybrids between Pgt and Pgs), P. triticina, and P. hordei, was investigated by phylogenetic analysis. Both CrtYB and CrtI were found to be closely related among rust fungi, other pathogenic fungi, and some aphids. Our results provide a springboard to increase the understanding of the physiological role(s) of carotenoid pigments in rust fungi, to better understand evolution within the Pucciniales, and to develop robust molecular diagnostics for rust fungi.  相似文献

Rust diseases cause significant reductions annually in yield of cereal crops worldwide. Traditional monoculture cropping systems apply significant selection pressure on the pathogen to cause rapid shifts in pathotypes. Plant breeders strive to stay ahead of the evolving pathogens by releasing new crop genotypes with new rust resistance genes or gene combinations. Owing to the limited number of known resistance genes and the lack of molecular understanding of the plant-pathogen interaction, rusts remain challenging organisms to study, both at organismal and molecular levels. This review discusses recent progress by a number of laboratories towards better understanding the molecular component of rust disease resistance.  相似文献
