An event-by-event Monte Carlo code called NOREC, a substantially improved version of the Oak Ridge electron transport code (OREC), was released in 2003, after a number of modifications to OREC. In spite of some earlier work, the characteristics of the code have not been clearly shown so far, especially for a wide range of electron energies. Therefore, NOREC was used in this study to generate one of the popular dosimetric quantities, the scaled point kernel, for a number of electron energies between 0.02 and 1.0 MeV. Calculated kernels were compared with the most well-known published kernels based on a condensed history Monte Carlo code, ETRAN, to show not only general agreement between the codes for the electron energy range considered but also possible differences between an event-by-event code and a condensed history code. There was general agreement between the kernels within about 5% up to 0.7 r/r 0 for 100 keV and 1 MeV electrons. Note that r/r 0 denotes the scaled distance, where r is the radial distance from the source to the dose point and r 0 is the continuous slowing down approximation (CSDA) range of a mono-energetic electron. For the same range of scaled distances, the discrepancies for 20 and 500 keV electrons were up to 6 and 12%, respectively. Especially, there was more pronounced disagreement for 500 keV electrons than for 20 keV electrons. The degree of disagreement for 500 keV electrons decreased when NOREC results were compared with published EGS4/PRESTA results, producing similar agreement to other electron energies.  相似文献

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Center for Radiation Protection Knowledge has undertaken calculations related to various environmental exposure scenarios. A previous paper reported the results for submersion in radioactive air and immersion in water using age-specific mathematical phantoms. This paper presents age-specific effective dose rate coefficients derived using stylized mathematical phantoms for exposure to contaminated soils. Dose rate coefficients for photon, electron, and positrons of discrete energies were calculated and folded with emissions of 1252 radionuclides addressed in ICRP Publication 107 to determine equivalent and effective dose rate coefficients. The MCNP6 radiation transport code was used for organ dose rate calculations for photons and the contribution of electrons to skin dose rate was derived using point-kernels. Bremsstrahlung and annihilation photons of positron emission were evaluated as discrete photons. The coefficients calculated in this work compare favorably to those reported in the US Federal Guidance Report 12 as well as by other authors who employed voxel phantoms for similar exposure scenarios.  相似文献

Summary The pigmented epithelium of Rana pipiens tadpole eyes normally develops at least two types of melanosomes: (1) an elongated melanin granule of relatively homogeneous electron density, and (2) a complex melanosome which has an outer electrondense area and one or more less dense cores. Evidence indicates that complex melanosomes are formed by new melanin enclosing preexisting melanosomes. An organized fibrillar premelanosome is demonstrated with the aid of the antimelanogenic compound phenylthiourea (PTU). These premelanosomes are the developing forms of the elongated melanosomes. There is evidence that the premelanosomes originate in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Phenylthiourea blocks melanin synthesis in the premelanosomes; however, removal of the PTU allows pigment deposition. Mary Esther Gaulden presents a personal summary of the activities of Alexander Hollaender, from his days at the National Institutes of Health to his becoming Director of the Biology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1947. This appealing story deals with many of her reactions to his personality and organizational style. It reflects the atmosphere of science in those days, and her enthusiasm in this vibrant milieu. Next is a brief account by John Jagger of his first meeting with Dr. Hollaender, arrival in Oak Ridge in April 1956, and wedding to Mary Esther six months later at the house of the Hollaenders in Oak Ridge. The third section is an account by Virginia P. White of how she came to Oak Ridge in 1955 and became Dr. Hollaender's Laboratory Administrator. She gives a personal account of the many facets of his managerial style, as well as of the personality of his wife, Henrietta. She also describes one of Hollaender's many avocations, the collection of fossils on Sunday morning hikes in the Cumberland Mountains, accompanied by lab and visiting personnel, and finally comments on the annual research conferences in Gatlinburg TN, for which Hollaender and the lab became very well known, with some closing vignettes on his leadership style.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted with subsurface sediments from Oak Ridge National Laboratory to determine the potential for reduction of U(VI) under sulfate-reducing conditions with either ethanol or acetate as the electron donor. The results showed extensive U(VI) reduction in sediments supplied with either electron donor, where geochemical and microbiological analyses demonstrated active sulfate reduction.  相似文献

Acanthamoeba royreba sp. n. from a human tumor cell culture   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A new species of Acanthamoeba was isolated from a culture of an established line of human choriocarcinoma cells. The identification of this strain, originally called the Oak Ridge strain, and the establishment of a new species for it were based on morphologic, serologic, and immunochemical studies. In general, the structure of the trophozoite did not differ significantly from that of other species of Acanthamoeba, except that a body which more closely resembled a centriole than material described previously as centriolar satellites was observed in trophozoites examined with the electron microscope. The dimensions of the trophozoite were the smallest among the species of Acanthamoeba. The cyst was typical of the genus, but differed from those of other species by its smaller size and the presence of numerous ostioles. Studies of the Oak Ridge strain by immunofluorescence using antisera developed against the isolate and Acanthamoeba culbertsoni, A. castellanii, A. polyphaga, A. rhysodes, A. astronyxis, and A. palestinensis revealed the antigenic uniqueness of the Oak Ridge strain. It was demonstrated by immunoelectrophoretic analyses of the soluble proteins of the Oak Ridge strain that shared approximately 1/2 of its antigenic structure with A. castellanii and A. culbertsoni. The antigenic differences of the isolate from other species of Acanthamoeba were deduced from comparison of the antigenic constitution of these species and the Oak Ridge strain with A. culbertsoni and A. castellanii. Although the strain was initially recognized by its cytopathogenicity for cultures, it did not produce acute infections in mice after intranasal inoculation of 1 X 10(4) ameba/mouse. The foregoing results constituted the basis for the establishment of the Oak Ridge strain as a new species, A. royreba sp. n., in the genus Acanthamoeba.  相似文献

The approximation method of N. Rashevsky is discussed and reviewed. It is shown that in addition to theexplicit assumptions and approximations there is involved the assumption that the rate of metabolism is the same at every point in the cell and that theaverage rate of metabolism is different from zero. An expression is given for the error in the approximate method when the rate of metabolism is any function of the concentration. It is also shown that a solution in theform of that obtained by the approximate method is not possible if the generalized laws of diffusion are assumed to apply. Bacteriol. 90:223-226. 1965.-Cells of certain mutant strains of Escherichia coli grow into long multinucleate filaments after exposure to radiation. Deoxyribonucleic acid, ribonucleic acid, and protein synthesis proceed, but cytokinesis does not occur. Cytokinesis (cross-septation) can be initiated by exposure of the filaments to pantoyl lactone or a temperature of 42 C. If growing filaments are treated with mitomycin C, nuclear division does not occur, and nuclear material is confined to the central region of the filament. Cytokinesis cannot be induced in mitomycin C-treated filaments by pantoyl lactone or treatment at 42 C.  相似文献

Summary A new multivariate analytical technique, canonical group correlation (CGC) is developed to correlate abiotic and biotic characterization of communities. This technique is applied to the plant communities of a 97.5 ha oak-hickory watershed. This analysis has validated inferences drawn in earlier studies which used only species data. We have concluded that the dominant factors discriminating the four distinct types of vegetation which exist in the region being studied are age and slope position. Slope position is inferred to be correlated with a moisture gradient. This information is depicted by the location of the four community types in two canonical spaces. One space is determined by vegetational parameters (species composition), the other by environmental parameters. A linear transformation between the two spaces is derived. A lysimeter facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, originally constructed to investigate leaching from low-level radioactive waste, was converted for use as an intermediate-scale facility for subsurface bioremediation research. The six experimental lysimeters are 2.5 m diameter by 4 m deep. The number and size of the lysimeters allow for replicate experiments and extensive sampling of the soil under controlled conditions. The facility provided containment of the contaminated soil, leachate, and microorganisms; positive control of the water table within the lysimeter; the ability to aerate the subsurface; multiple means of adding nutrients, electron acceptors, and electron donors to the subsurface; instrumentation for monitoring oxygen level, temperature, and moisture level; and means for obtaining samples of groundwater, soil, and liquid and gas samples from the soil pores. The flexibility of the facility allows for simulation of a wide range of subsurface bioremediation technologies. Startup and operational procedures and the advantages and disadvantages of the lysimeter facility are discussed. The facility is currently available to the bioremediation research community.  相似文献

Neutron dose coefficients for standard irradiation geometries have been reported in International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Publication 116 for the ICRP Publication 110 adult reference phantoms. In the present work, organ and effective dose coefficients have been calculated for a receptor in both upright and articulated (bent) postures representing more realistic working postures exposed to a mono-energetic neutron radiation field. This work builds upon prior work by Dewji and co-workers comparing upright and bent postures for exposure to mono-energetic photon fields. Simulations were conducted using the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s articulated stylized adult phantom, “Phantom wIth Moving Arms and Legs” (PIMAL) software package, and the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) version 6.1.1 radiation transport code. Organ doses were compared for the upright and bent (45° and 90°) phantom postures for neutron energies ranging from 1 × 10??9 to 20 MeV for the ICRP Publication 116 external exposure geometries—antero-posterior (AP), postero-anterior (PA), and left and right lateral (LLAT, RLAT). Using both male and female phantoms, effective dose coefficients were computed using ICRP Publication 103 methodology. The resulting coefficients for articulated phantoms were compared to those of the upright phantom. Computed organ and effective dose coefficients are discussed as a function of neutron energy, phantom posture, and source irradiation geometry. For example, it is shown here that for the AP and PA irradiation geometries, the differences in the organ coefficients between the upright and bent posture become more pronounced with increasing bending angle. In the AP geometry, the brain dose coefficients are expectedly higher in the bent postures than in the upright posture, while all other organs have lower dose coefficients, with the thyroid showing the greatest difference. Overall, the effective dose estimated for the upright phantom is more conservative than that for the articulated phantom, which may have ramifications in the estimation or reconstruction of radiation doses.  相似文献

Foliar nitrogen has been shown to be positively correlated with midsummer canopy albedo and canopy near infrared (NIR) reflectance over a broad range of plant functional types (e.g., forests, grasslands, and agricultural lands). To date, the mechanism(s) driving the nitrogen–albedo relationship have not been established, and it is unknown whether factors affecting nitrogen availability will also influence albedo. To address these questions, we examined variation in foliar nitrogen in relation to leaf spectral properties, leaf mass per unit area, and leaf water content for three deciduous species subjected to either nitrogen (Harvard Forest, MA, and Oak Ridge, TN) or CO(2) fertilization (Oak Ridge, TN). At Oak Ridge, we also obtained canopy reflectance data from the airborne visible/infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) to examine whether canopy-level spectral responses were consistent with leaf-level results. At the leaf level, results showed no differences in reflectance or transmittance between CO(2) or nitrogen treatments, despite significant changes in foliar nitrogen. Contrary to our expectations, there was a significant, but negative, relationship between foliar nitrogen and leaf albedo, a relationship that held for both full spectrum leaf albedo as well as leaf albedo in the NIR region alone. In contrast, remote sensing data indicated an increase in canopy NIR reflectance with nitrogen fertilization. Collectively, these results suggest that altered nitrogen availability can affect canopy albedo, albeit by mechanisms that involve canopy-level processes rather than changes in leaf-level reflectance.  相似文献

Illus. 1960.–After receiving large doses of gamma rays, wheat grains can germinate and grow into small seedlings, either in water or in a solution of gibberellic acid, without undergoing any mitosis. Gibberellic acid stimulates growth of plants from grain given twice the dose that abolishes all detectable mitotic activity. Therefore, it must stimulate growth of these irradiated plants by cell expansion alone. Growth stimulation in shoots from such irradiated grain was reflected in increased dry matter content and other responses characteristic of gibberellin treatment. Comparison of the shoot height-dose curves for plants grown in water and those in gibberellin suggest that cell division per se does not contribute greatly to the gibberellin stimulation of growth in unirradiated young wheat seedlings. The effect of gibberellic acid on plants from grain irradiated sufficiently to prevent subsequent mitotic activity was on the total extent of growth, not only on the rate. The general ineffectiveness of gibberellin on mature tissues can not be attributed to the cells having reached the maximum size that they were potentially capable of attaining, but must be caused by a physiological incapacity of the cells to respond to gibberellin treatment. These results are discussed in connection with recent reports that stimulation of growth by gibberellin can be attributed solely to an increase in cell number.  相似文献

Plants not only evolve but also reduce oxygen in photosynthesis. Considerable oxygen uptake occurs during photorespiration of C3 plants. Controversies exist on whether direct oxygen reduction in the Mehler reaction together with associated electron transport is also a major sink of electrons when leaves are exposed to sunlight. Here, preference is given to the view that it is not. Whereas photorespiration consumes ATP, the Mehler reaction does not. In isolated chloroplasts photosynthesizing in the presence of saturating bicarbonate, the Mehler reaction is suppressed. In the water – water cycle of leaves, which includes the Mehler reaction, water is oxidized and electrons flow through Photosystems II and I to oxygen producing water. The known properties of coupled electron transport suggest that the water – water cycle cannot act as an efficient electron sink. Rather, by contributing to thylakoid acidification it plays a role in the control of Photosystem II activity. Cyclic electron transport competes with the Mehler reaction for electrons. Both pathways can help to defray possible ATP deficiencies in the chloroplast stroma, but play a more important role by making intrathylakoid protein protonation possible. This is a necessary step for the dissipation of excess excitation energy as heat. Linear electron flow to oxygen relieves the inhibition of cyclic electron transport, which is observed under excessive reduction of intersystem electron carriers. In turn, cyclic electron transport replaces functions of the linear pathway in the control of Photosystem II when oxygen reduction is decreased at low temperatures or, experimentally, when the oxygen concentration of the gas phase is low. Thus, cyclic electron flow acts in flexible relationship with the water–water cycle to control Photosystem II activity. Monte Carlo computer models that simulate the detailed, event-by-event transport of electrons in liquid water are valuable for the interpretation and understanding of findings in radiation chemistry and radiation biology. Because of the paucity of experimental data, such efforts must rely on theoretical principles and considerable judgment in their development. Experimental verification of numerical input is possible to only a limited extent. Indirect support for model validity can be gained from a comparison of details between two independently developed computer codes as well as the observable results calculated with them. In this study, we compare the transport properties of electrons in liquid water using two such models, PARTRAC and NOREC. Both use interaction cross sections based on plane-wave Born approximations and a numerical parameterization of the complex dielectric response function for the liquid. The models are described and compared, and their similarities and differences are highlighted. Recent developments in the field are discussed and taken into account. The calculated stopping powers, W values, and slab penetration characteristics are in good agreement with one another and with other independent sources.  相似文献

A new alternative set of elastic and inelastic cross sections has been added to the very low energy extension of the Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation toolkit, Geant4-DNA, for the simulation of electron interactions in liquid water. These cross sections have been obtained from the CPA100 Monte Carlo track structure code, which has been a reference in the microdosimetry community for many years. They are compared to the default Geant4-DNA cross sections and show better agreement with published data.In order to verify the correct implementation of the CPA100 cross section models in Geant4-DNA, simulations of the number of interactions and ranges were performed using Geant4-DNA with this new set of models, and the results were compared with corresponding results from the original CPA100 code. Good agreement is observed between the implementations, with relative differences lower than 1% regardless of the incident electron energy.Useful quantities related to the deposited energy at the scale of the cell or the organ of interest for internal dosimetry, like dose point kernels, are also calculated using these new physics models. They are compared with results obtained using the well-known Penelope Monte Carlo code.  相似文献

Repair of radiation-induced damage to the cell division mechanism of Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 91:737-742. 1966.-Microscopic observations of irradiated populations of filamentous Escherichia coli cells indicated that filaments can be induced to divide by a substance donated by neighboring cells. We have made this observation the basis for a quantitative technique in which filaments are incubated in the presence of nongrowing donor cells. The presence of "donor" organisms promotes division and subsequent colony formation in filaments. "Donor" bacteria do not affect nonfilamentous cells. An extract of "donor" cells retains the division-promoting activity. The extract has been partially fractionated, and consists of a heat-stable and a heat-labile component. The heat-stable component is inactive in promoting cell division, but enhances the activity of the heat-labile component. The division-promoting system is discussed as a radiation repair mechanism and as a normal component of the cell division system in E. coli.  相似文献

The mouse mutation hairy ears (Eh) originated in a neutron irradiation experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Subsequent linkage studies with Eh and other loci on Chr 15 suggested that it is associated with a chromosomal rearrangement that inhibits recombination since it shows tight linkage with several loci occupying the region extending from congenital goiter (cog) distal to caracul (Ca). We report here (1) linkage experiments confirming this effect on recombination and (2) meiotic and mitotic cytological studies that confirm the presence of a chromosomal rearrangement. The data are consistent with the hypothesis of a paracentric inversion in the distal half of Chr 15. The effect of the inversion extends over a minimum of 30 cM, taking into account the genetic data and the cytologically determined chromosomal involvement extending to the region of the telomere.  相似文献
