Species composition and structure of ectoparasite arthropod communities were examined all year round six years in the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus, Ural wood mouse Apodemus uralensis and the common shrew Sorex araneus in forests of the Ilmen'-Volkhov depression. In total, 4500 host samples have been examined and all ectoparasites have been collected. The species composition of ectoparasite community in small mammal species are as follows: the bank vole--29 insect, tick and mite species, the common shrew--23 species, the Ural wood mouse--16 species. In forest biotopes, many temporary ectoparasitic species occur on several host species living in the same habitats under a forest canopy and contacting each other. A parasitic supracommunity in the ecosystem examined has a pool of temporary ectoparasites, which is available for all the community of small mammals. A role of different rodent and shrew species are hosts of insects and ticks changes depending on a density of potential host populations and numerous other environment factors.  相似文献

From the beginning of the last century, the expansion of the ski industry has significantly altered alpine environments. The aim of this research was to study the impacts of forest ski-pistes on small mammals by assessing (1) whether ski-pistes were used or avoided and (2) whether they acted as ecological barriers to local movements. Two ski-developed valleys of the Western Italian Alps were considered. Most of the fieldwork occurred in the Sessera valley (Piedmont); a minor part was carried out in the Ayas valley (Aosta valley). In the main study site, three capture–mark–recapture studies on core species were carried out to assess habitat use (one study) and the capability of crossing ski-pistes (two studies: spontaneous crossing and individual translocation). Two radiotracking surveys of the most vagile species, the fat dormouse, were carried out to locate home ranges and resting sites in relation to ski-pistes. In the habitat use experiment, virtually all individuals (245 out of 249) were captured outside the ski-piste. In the spontaneous crossing test, recaptures of marked individuals showed that they moved on one side of the ski-piste only and never crossed it. However, in translocation experiments, 18.6 % of translocated individuals were able to cross the ski-piste and come back to the original forest patch. Fat dormice maintained home ranges on one side of the ski-piste and they never crossed it. Resting sites were mostly underground, between rocks, in boulders and in rocky crevices, never in the ski-piste. Our study clearly suggests that forest ski-pistes represent habitat loss and are ecological, semi-permeable barriers to small mammals. To mitigate habitat loss and make movements between forest patches easier, a possible management intervention could be maintaining a partial shrub cover or adding woody debris, both relatively easy methods for ski areas to implement in order to maintain small mammal communities.  相似文献

Different ectoparasitic species occur on different areas on the small mammal host: chiggers in the ear muzzle, ticks on the ears and other parts of the head, fleas and lice on the back and most gamasid mites on the posterior part of the host body.
The distribution might be affected by (1) the mechanical interference of the host. Thus attached species such as ticks and chiggers occur in areas where direct predation is limited and small and/or very mobile species are found on other parts of the body. (2) interaction between parasitic species. In areas where species meet, there might be a segregation in time or in space. Species such as Laelaps agilis (C. L. Koch) and Haemogamasus nidi Michael are most frequently found within a restricted area on the host, but differ in their seasonal occurrence. In other combinations of species, such as in fleas, there are marked differentiations in body areas used. These differentiations may be evolutionary fixed or manifested at first when species meet. The content of cesium-137 in the organisms of different species of small mammals in forests of Bryansk Province five years later the Chernobyl accident varies to a great extent within some modal value n.10(-6)-n.10(-7) Cu/kg. Gamma-radiation is about 200 mcR/h. The revealed radiation level results in increased mortality during embryonal and postnatal periods, as during these periods a very intensive process of radiocesium accumulation in the animal organism takes place. Statistically valid differences of young and old animals ratio with the asymmetrical deviation towards old age groups have been found on the polluted territory at the end of summer season.  相似文献

The total aestival ectoparasitic burden of six small mammal species ( Sorex araneus, Clethrionomys glareolus, C. rutilus, C. rufocanus, Microtus agrestis , and M. oeconomus ) was investigated in terms of frequency distribution, frequency of occurrence, species diversity and joint occurrences. The mammals were collected in northern Fennoscandia during peak density years. The frequency distribution of the ectoparasites was best described as negative binomial on C. glareolus, M. agrestis , and M. oeconomus but not so on S. araneus, C. rutilus and C. rufocanus. The distribution did not fit the Poisson distribution in any species. The percentage of S. araneus that had ectoparasites was 49%, and of the microtidae species, 73-96% had ectoparasites. The median number of ectoparasites on the vole species was between 2 and 9 specimens of 1 or 2 species. There was a significant, positive correlation between the number of ectoparasitic species and the total number of individuals on all host species. Pairs of ectoparasitic species occurring together more or less often than expected by chance were found on all host species. However, the pairs rarely repeated themselves on the same host species under different environmental conditions, or on other host species under similar circumstances. Differences in total infestation between reproductive categories and sexes were observed in M. agrestis but not in S. araneus and C. glareolus.  相似文献

A review of field data indicates the ubiquitous occurrence of parasites in small mammal communities, with the heligmosome nematodes in many cases dominant members of the helminth fauna. The population dynamics of the heligmosomes are discussed in relation to the interpretation of patterns of infection observed in the field. Laboratory data are then used to indicate ways in which the parasites might reflect or influence the population biology of their hosts. The aim of the paper is to suggest the potential significance of parasitism for the ecology of small mammal populations.  相似文献

Changes in the composition and abundance of 5 marsupial and 3 eutherian mammal species, and of their helminth communities pre- and post-perturbation by wildfire at Nadgee and Timbillica State Forests in southeastern coastal New South Wales during the period September 1977 to September 1985 are reported.
  • 2.2.Dasyurid marsupials (Antechinus stuartii, Antechinus swainsonii and Sminthopsis leucopus), peramelid marsupials (Perameles nasuta and Isoodon obesulus) and native eutherian rodents (Rattus fuscipes and Rattus lutreolus) occurred pre-fire. These species and the introduced house mouse (Mus musculus) occurred post-fire.
  • 3.3. All host taxa harboured a diverse helminth fauna dominated by nematodes. The helminth communities in A. stuartii, A. swainsonii, S. leucopus and R. lutreolus represented more than 70%, those in P. nasuta, R. fuscipes and M. musculus represented more than 50% and that in I. obesulus represented less than 40% of the total helminth faunas known to occur in these hosts throughout their geographic ranges in Australia.

Adult nematodes of Capillaria sp. 11 and Tetrabothriostrongylus mackerrasae occurred in all host groups, those of Peramelistrongylus skedastos occurred in both marsupial groups but not in rodents, larval stages of the ascaridoid nematode Ophidascaris robertsi occurred in all host groups and physalopterid nematode larvae believed to be Abbreviata spp. occurred in dasyurid marsupials and in rodents but not in peramelid marsupials.

The role of ecological and phylogenetic processes is fundamental to understanding how parasite communities are structured. However, for coral reef fishes, such information is almost nonexistent. In this study, we analyzed the structure of the parasite communities based on composition, richness, abundance, and biovolume of ecto- and endoparasites of 14 wrasse species (Labridae) from Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. We determine whether the structure of the parasite communities from these fishes was related to ecological characteristics (body size, abundance, swimming ability, and diet) and/or the phylogenetic relatedness of the hosts. We examined 264 fishes from which almost 37,000 individual parasites and 98 parasite categories (types and species) were recorded. Gnathiid and cestode larvae were the most prevalent and abundant parasites in most fishes. Mean richness, abundance, and biovolume of ectoparasites per fish species were positively correlated with host body size only after controlling for the host phylogeny, whereas no such correlation was found for endoparasites with any host variable. Because most ectoparasites have direct transmission, one possible explanation for this pattern is that increased space (host body size) may increase the colonization and recruitment of ectoparasites. However, endoparasites generally have indirect transmission that can be affected by many other variables, such as number of prey infected and rate of parasite transmission.  相似文献

Many plants rely on animals for seed dispersal, but are all individuals equally effective at dispersing seeds? If not, then the loss of certain individual dispersers from populations could have cascade effects on ecosystems. Despite the importance of seed dispersal for forest ecosystems, variation among individual dispersers and whether land‐use change interferes with this process remains untested. Through a large‐scale field experiment conducted on small mammal seed dispersers, we show that an individual's personality affects its choice of seeds, as well as how distant and where seeds are cached. We also show that anthropogenic habitat modifications shift the distribution of personalities within a population, by increasing the proportion of bold, active, and anxious individuals and in‐turn affecting the potential survival and dispersal of seeds. We demonstrate that preserving diverse personality types within a population is critical for maintaining the key ecosystem function of seed dispersal.  相似文献

The abundance of a given species in a community is likely to depend on both the total abundance and diversity of other species making up that community. A large number of co-occurring individuals or co-occurring species may decrease the abundance of any given species via diffuse competition; however, indirect interactions among many co-occurring species can have positive effects on a focal species. The existence of diffuse competition and facilitation remain difficult to demonstrate in natural communities. Here, we use data on communities of fleas ectoparasitic on small mammals from 27 distinct geographical regions to test whether the abundance of any given flea species in a community is affected by either the total abundance of all other co-occurring flea species, or the species richness and/or taxonomic diversity of the flea community. At all scales of analysis, i.e. whether we compared the same flea species on different host species, or different flea species, two consistent results emerged. First, the abundance of a given flea species correlates positively with the total abundance of all other co-occurring flea species in the community. Second, the abundance of any given flea species correlates negatively with either the species richness or taxonomic diversity of the flea community. The results do not support the existence of diffuse competition in these assemblages, because the more individuals of other flea species are present on a host population, the more individuals of the focal species are there as well. Instead, we propose explanations involving either apparent facilitation among flea species via suppression of host immune defenses, or niche filtering processes acting to restrict the taxonomic composition and abundance of flea assemblages.  相似文献

Habitat selection by seven species of small mammals was investigated in three areas of heathland in Victoria. A total of 12 120 trapnights over 22 months was used to assess preference for different vegetation groups formed by clustering trap sites on (a) floristic and (b) structural criteria. Rattus lutreolus proved to have both floristic and structural requirements. Seasonal changes in distribution in relation to rainfall appeared to be dependent on soil type. Greatest movement occurred on sandy podzol soils. Pseudomys shortridgei selected the most diverse vegetation types. Rattus fuscipes preferred wet, structurally complex vegetation. Mus musculus appeared to fill the niche of Antechinus minimus and partially replace A. stuartii and A. flavipes when Antechinus spp. were absent. M. musculus seems to commonly fill three niches in these heathlands: fossorial insectivore, scansorial insectivore and immediate post-fire omnivore. A small mammal community structure of five major food niches may be common to both heathland and forest communities of south-eastern Australia.  相似文献
