Three cultivars of Italian or hybrid ryegrass were exposed to frit fly attack at varying frequency in the laboratory. Initially a Westerwolds and a hybrid cultivar showed greater yield reductions than an Italian ryegrass cultivar, although they did not usually suffer a higher proportion of damaged tillers. The differing effect on yield appeared to be due mainly to greater impact of first or infrequent attacks on cultivars producing fewer tillers. After two to six attacks in approximately 7 months the Westerwolds and hybrid cultivars appeared to become tolerant to attack and were subsequently the least affected, although continuing to suffer tiller damage at a rate at least as high as the Italian ryegrass. All cultivars recovered fully when attack ceased, and their exclusion from attack did not improve their persistence.

In four experiments from 1981 to 1983 August-sown perennial (Lolium perenne) and Italian (L. multiflorum) ryegrass were exposed to frit fly attack by oviposition on the seedlings. Responses to pesticide treatment were detected at autumn harvests. Even at low sowing rates pesticide application did not ultimately establish a better sward and, owing to a tendency towards spring reversal of autumn yield responses, even temporary returns were negligible. As frit fly numbers were unusually low the autumn response to pesticide was sufficient to suggest that frit fly is always likely to be an influential factor in ryegrass sown in early August in this area. Later sowings are less likely to be affected. The yield response was related to the numbers of adult flies present 2–7 wk after sowing. Neither grass species was consistently more affected than the other. Additional seed (compared with a sowing rate below normal commercial rates) and the inclusion of fertiliser at sowing also gave only small temporary returns and failed to establish a better sward. It is suggested that routine protection against frit fly attack is of at least equal value to the other two variables in an early August sowing.

From 1978 - 1985, 14 trials were conducted, mainly in Northern England, to assess the efficacy of different insecticides, formulations and application times for the control of frit fly (Oscinella frit) on winter cereals (13 on winter wheat and one on winter barley). Treatments were compared by assessing shoot damage in December-January, numbers of healthy tillers in April and harvested yield. A chlorpyrifos spray to the grass before ploughing or at crop emergence gave the most consistently good results, significantly reducing damage and increasing yield by 0·61 and 0·31 t/ha respectively when taken over all trials. Sprays or granules of other insecticides applied from before drilling to 8 wk after emergence gave variable but sometimes good control and enhanced yield. Chlorpyrifos applied from crop emergence to 8 wk after emergence was generally more effective than other insecticides. Cypermethrin at emergence or 2wk later gave promising results in the two trials where it was used. Of the seed treatments fonofos was the most effective though it did not match the spray treatments. In additional trials, where insecticides were applied after damage occurred, sprays of chlorpyrifos and pirimphos-methyl reduced damage and increased yield.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) are important temperate forage grasses which are closely related, generating fertile interspecific hybrids. All groups are represented by multiple cultivars in the commercial pasture seeds market. Due to the close taxonomic relationship between the two species, differentiation based on morphophysiological criteria is not always readily achievable. In addition, an obligate outbreeding reproductive habit produces high levels of individual heterozygosity and intrapopulation diversity, which presents problems for discrimination between cultivars. Molecular genetic marker polymorphism provides an effective means of addressing these challenges. An iterative process of resequencing from loci distributed across the perennial ryegrass genome was used to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, which were then validated and formatted in a highly multiplexed (384-plex) assay system. SNP genotyping was then performed across samples of 48–192 individuals from a total of 27 ryegrass cultivars (19 of perennial ryegrass, seven of Italian ryegrass and one hybrid cultivar). SNP markers from perennial ryegrass exhibited a high level of transfer to Italian ryegrass. Data analysis permitted quantification of intra- and inter-species diversity, as well as discrimination between cultivars within each species, including diploid and autotetraploid cultivars of perennial ryegrass. Lower levels of SNP-based diversity were detected in Italian ryegrass than in perennial ryegrass. A neighbour-joining tree based on genetic distance analysis located a hybrid cultivar to an intermediate position between the two species-specific cultivar groups. The resulting catalogue of ryegrass cultivars will provide support for the processes of cultivar accreditation and quality assurance.

Pesticide applications made at the time of sowing significantly improved seedling stand and/or herbage dry matter yield at 20 of 45 sites studied during 1977-79 in England and Wales. More autumn-sown swards responded to pesticide treatment than spring-sown ones and re-seeded grass was attacked more often than grass sown after arable crops. Pest damage was seldom obvious although some noticeable attacks by frit fly occurred. Slugs and leatherjackets appeared to be unimportant. The effect of nematodes was unresolved.

The present two field experiments, involving plots of Italian ryegrass sown in 1976, 1980 and 1984 confirmed results of earlier work in which the yield and persistence of Italian ryegrass was greatly increased by the application of pesticide. A range of pesticide treatments were used. The responses to application of permethrin applied three times per year average 8% for the three years of the first experiment and 5% for the five years of the second experiment. Such responses appeared cost-effective, but the overall environmental impact of such applications is not known.

Plots at each of eight widespread permanent pasture sites below 300 m and representative of large areas of long established grassland in England and Wales, were treated with an insecticide plus molluscicide, a fungicide or nematicide treatment. Populations of various invertebrates and the occurrence of foliar fungal diseases were assessed. Leaf blotch (Drechslera) was the most common disease, but neither this nor other foliar fungal diseases were prevalent until late in the growing season. The fungicide treatment did not control diseases satisfactorily. The fungicide and nematicide treatment had little effect on total annual herbage yield. Leatherjackets, crambids, slugs and frit fly larvae were present, usually in low numbers, at most sites. The insecticide and molluscicide treatment increased yield by 11% on average across all sites and years. Losses caused by pests to UK grasslands were estimated to be over £500 million per year.

Rye (Secale cereale L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) are commonly double cropped with soybean (Glycine max L.). Recent greenhouse studies have shown variability in plant-parasitic nematode response to cool season grass species and cultivars. However, subsequent soybean performance was not affected by previous annual ryegrass cultivar in the green-house. The objective of this research was to determine whether winter cover crop species or cultivars affected nematode populations and subsequent performance of soybean in teh field. Four cultivars of annual ryegrass, wheat, and rye, and a fallow control were seeded on a Suffolk sandy loam (fine-loamy, siliceous, thermic Typic Hapuldult) soil in each of three years. Nematode-susceptible soybeans were seeded following forage removal. Soil samples for nematode counts were taken immediately before soybean harvest each year. In another experiment, one cultivar each of annual ryegrass, wheat, and rye, and a fallow control were followed by three soybean cultivars selected for differing nematode susceptibility. Grass cultivars did not affect nematode populations under succedding soybean. The only nematodes affected by grass species in either experiment were Pratylenchus spp., Heterodera glycines Ichinohe, and Tylenchorhynchus claytoni (Kofoid and White) Chitwood. Nematode population means were usually low following ryegrass and high following the fallow control. High soybean yields followed the fallow control, and low soybean yields followed annual ryegrass.

Plant yield within and between four cultivars of perennial ryegrass infected with ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV) was closely related to symptom severity. Distribution of symptom severity was continuous in four perennial ryegrass and four Italian ryegrass cultivars infected with a severe RMV isolate, and also in another perennial ryegrass cultivar infected with a severe isolate of the virus, a mild one and one of intermediate severity. Symptom expression was polygenically inherited in both Italian (cv. RvP) and perennial (cv. S.24) ryegrass. Both additive and non-additive genetic variation was present in RvP, but the variation in S.24 was additive only. No significant maternal inheritance was present in either species.

Species diversity and abundance of frit flies from the genus Meromyza have been assessed in coastal biotopes, grasslands, and agro-ecosystems of Vologda oblast (Russia) and Warsaw province (Poland). The Jaccard quotient of similarity (IG) of frit fly abundance has shown a uniformity between coastal banks and grasslands along these banks, as well as between cultivated cereals (except for oats) and field boundaries, cultivated fields, and some reach-in-herbs grasslands, including hayfields. Considerable heterogeneity of species composition of the flies has been revealed in similar biotopes. The biotopes studied have been found to be dominated by one species of frit flies. It has been discovered that cereal rotation in agro-ecosystem results in change in the dominant species of frit fly. The cereal height has been found to influence the abundance and diversity of frit flies. No regularities have been observed in the correlation between the abundances of frit flies in different biotopes. It has been pointed out that M. nigriseta Fed. and M. variegata Mg. can feed on cultivated cereals.

To increase our insight into the above- and belowground N flows in grass and grass-clover swards relations between crop and soil parameters were studied in a cutting trial with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) monocultures and ryegrass–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures. The effects of clover cultivar on herbage yield, the amount of clover-derived nitrogen, apparent N transfer to companion grass, dynamics of N and organic matter in the soil were estimated. The grass monocultures had very low DM yields (<2.1 t ha-1) and a low N concentration in the harvested herbage. During 1992–1995 the annual herbage DM yield in the mixtures ranged from 7.0 to 14.3 t ha-1, the white clover DM yield from 2.4 to 11.2 t ha-1 and the mean annual clover content in the herbage DM harvested from 34 to 78%. Mixtures with the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage and clover DM and had a higher clover content than mixtures with small/medium-leaved cvs. Gwenda and Retor. Grass cultivar did not consistently affect yield, botanical composition or soil characteristics. The apparent N2 fixation was very high, ranging from 150 to 545 kg N ha-1 in the different mixtures. For each tonne of clover DM in the harvested herbage 49 to 63 kg N was harvested, while the apparent N transfer from clover to grass varied between 55 and 113 kg N ha-1 year-1.The net N mineralization rate was lower under monocultures than under mixtures. The C mineralization and the amounts of C and N in active soil organic matter fractions were similar for monocultures and mixtures, but the C:N ratio of the active soil organic matter fractions were higher under grass than under mixtures. This explains the lower N mineralization under grass.

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is the most widely cultivated annual forage grass in Japan. Lodging damage reduces both harvested yield and forage quality. To identify the chromosomal regions controlling lodging resistance in Italian ryegrass, we analyzed seven quantitative characters—heading date, plant height, culm weight, culm diameter, culm strength, tiller number, and culm pushing resistance—and evaluated lodging scores in the field in a two-way pseudo-testcross F1 population. Significant correlations between most combinations of the traits examined were found. Seventeen QTLs for all traits except culm weight were detected on six of seven linkage groups by simple interval mapping using cross-pollination (CP) algorithm, and 33 independent QTLs were also detected by composite interval mapping from both male and female parental linkage maps. In addition, up to 18 QTLs for lodging scores evaluated at nine different times were detected on all linkage groups. The flanking markers of those QTLs will serve as a useful tool for marker-assisted selection of lodging resistance in Italian ryegrass.

Field and glasshouse experiments on the control of potato mop-top virus
Field observations during 3 yr on a stock of potato cv. Red Craigs Royal partially infected with potato mop-top virus (PMTV) confirmed that the virus was passed by an infected mother plant to only a proportion of its progeny tubers, and showed that in this cultivar symptomless plants gave rise only to symptomless progeny. The elimination of PMTV from stocks can therefore be greatly accelerated by removing symptom-bearing plants. Infected potato tubers were not freed from PMTV by treating them at 37 °C for up to 8 wk. Treating ‘seed’ tubers bearing powdery scabs that contain PMTV-carrying resting spores of Spongospora subterranea with formaldehyde or organo-mercurial fungicide greatly decreased PMTV establishment when the tubers were planted in previously uninfective soil, but fumigation with 2-aminobutane was ineffective. Decreasing the pH of infective soil to 5-0 by applying sulphur greatly decreased the infection of potato cv. Arran Pilot with PMTV and S. subterranea in field experiments, but this treatment did not eliminate either; when the pH of treated soil was raised the transmission of PMTV resumed. Treating infective soil with a range of fungicides greatly decreased the infection of Nicotiana debneyi bait seedlings in glasshouse experiments but only calomel at 75 kg/ha controlled spread of PMTV and 5. subterranea to potato in field experiments. In other field experiments, applying zinc frit, zinc sulphate or zinc oxide to infective soil greatly decreased the spread of both to potato. The amount of zinc required increased with increase in clay content of the soil. However, treatment with zinc compounds did not eliminate PMTV-carrying vectors from soil, and when treated soil was diluted with autoclaved soil many of the bait seedlings planted in the mixture became infected. The zinc frit was phytotoxic because of its boron content but zinc sulphate and zinc oxide caused little or no decrease in tuber yield. The zinc content of potato tubers was increased but not doubled in zinc-treated plots, and during the first year after treatment the zinc content of topsoil decreased greatly. The zinc content of ryegrass grown after potatoes was greater than of potato tubers but did not reach a level considered dangerous to livestock. Treatment of soil with sulphur, zinc oxide or calomel may be useful for small plots used in the early stages of propagation of virus-tested potato clones where there is risk of infection with PMTV.

The effects of irrigation, four fertiliser rates, fungicide, insecticide + molluscicide, and nematicide treatments were tested on an Italian ryegrass sward sown in May 1983, in a multi-factorial experiment that allowed treatment interactions to be examined. Pests and fungal diseases were monitored over a 2-yr period. No recognised grassland insect pests or slugs were found in the seedbed but there were an estimated 17 300 plant parasitic nematodes/litre soil. Other, non-pest invertebrate populations, e.g. earthworms, were not assessed. In the first year yields were increased most by irrigation. There were also large yield responses to fertiliser over the range 50–900 kg N/ha/yr. Responses to pesticide application were relatively small. However, there were significant yield responses in the first year to nematicide and to insecticide + molluscicide treatments. Yields in the second year were affected more by increased fertiliser use than by irrigation; increases after pesticide use were similar to the previous year, and there was also a small but significant yield gain over untreated plots at the second harvest from those treated with fungicide. Interactions between main factors occurred in both years, affecting yields and nematode abundance. Nematode numbers were decreased in both years where the larger, compared to the smaller fertiliser applications had been made. In the first year these differences were only apparent on irrigated plots. It was concluded that, in this trial, irrigation had the greatest effect on yields of spring-sown ryegrass during its establishment year but that increasing fertiliser rates had a greater effect the year after; that fungi had had little effect on ryegrass yields, and that nematodes were more important pests than insects during establishment but insects were more important subsequently.

Effects of long-term applications (50, 100 and 200 m3 ha?1y?1) of pig and cow slurries on yield, botanical composition and nutrient content of herbage of an original perennial ryegrass sward were assessed in a three-cut silage system and compared with unamended and fertilized controls in the 36th year of the experiment. Cow slurry at 50 m3 ha?1 produced similar annual herbage DM yield to 200 kg ha?1 fertilizer N in 2006, whereas about 100 m3 ha?1 pig slurry were required to produce a similar amount of DM. The highest slurry application rate significantly influenced sward botanical composition without depressing DM yield. The principal invading species were creeping bent and meadow grasses (similar to findings at a previous assessment in 1981) except in the unamended control (which were common bent and Yorkshire fog). Perennial ryegrass remained a main species in plots receiving fertilizer (31 % annual DM yield) and low slurry rates (38 %) but declined to 3 % annual DM yield at the highest slurry rate where the ability of ryegrass to utilize slurry N and P may have been affected by chemically or physically induced deficiencies of other nutrients (e.g. Ca) or direct physical effects such as smothering.

Mixing the ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV) resistant perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cv. Endura with the susceptible Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum) cv. RvP decreased infection of RvP wth RMV from 37% when grown alone to 22% when mixed. However, Endura yielded less than RvP and there was no yield benefit from mixing the two cultivars. Mixing red clover (Trifolium pratense) cv. Hungaropoly with RvP had no detectable effect on RMV incidence in RvP but did decrease the incidence of red clover necrotic mosaic virus in Hungaropoly from 9% to 1% and of white clover mosaic virus from 53-5% to 41%. The yield of the mixture was equal to that of RvP grown alone but given nitrogen fertiliser. The numbers of eriophyid mites, including Abacarus hystrix the vector of RMV, on ryegrass leaves were similar in pure and mixed swards. It is concluded that with herbage crops, the common practice of sowing mixtures of species may help control virus diseases.

The effects of first generation carrot fly larval damage on chlorogenic acid concentration in carrots was investigated in a field experiment at Wellesbourne in 1985. In a separate experiment carrots grown in the absence of a resident population of carrot fly were also analysed for chlorogenic acid; these carrots maintained low concentrations of chlorogenic acid through the summer and autumn until low ground temperatures occurred from November to January. The relationship between chlorogenic acid concentration and damage by the first generation of carrot fly was described by a similar model to the one derived previously for late-generation damage but without the cultivar dependence. This may have been because first generation damage takes place in mid-summer when soil temperature is not sufficiently low for differential chlorogenic acid production by carrot cultivars. The model supports the hypothesis that carrot fly damage increases chlorogenic acid production which subsequently encourages further attack. The increase in acid production due to the low winter temperature may be the mechanism which, in turn, induced a differential cultivar response in carrots harvested during the winter.

It has been demonstrated that the use of living mulches solves some of the environmental problems associated with the conventional cropping of maize (Zea mays L.). However, plant growth and yield are often reduced in such a cropping system. Since shoot competition between the main crop and the cover crop can be avoided by regular cutting of the cover crop, it was hypothesized that decreases in maize growth and yield in a living Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) mulch must be related to below ground interactions between the two species and that these may be traced back to the characteristics of their root systems. Two cropping systems, maize grown alone in bare soil (conventional cropping, BS) or together with a living Italian ryegrass mulch (LM), were studied in lysimeters (1.0 m2 surface area and 1.1 m depth) placed outdoors, near Zurich Switzerland, for a duration of three years. In the LM treatment a strip, 0.3 m wide, in the center of the plot around the maize row was free of grass. For comparison, an Italian ryegrass (RG) treatment, managed as the LM treatment but without maize plants, was also included in the study. Minirhizotrons (54 mm inner diameter) were horizontally installed at ten soil depths between 0.0 and 1.0 m, perpendicular to the orientation of the maize rows. The development of the maize shoot and the rooting patterns were observed non-destructively. LM strongly modified the maize crop by decreasing growth and duration of the leaf area, and thus biomass and grain yield at harvest by as much as 78 and 72%, respectively. Maximum root densities in the three treatments were observed around the time of maize anthesis. However, BS maize was unable to build up root densities similar to those observed in Italian ryegrass plots at the time of maize sowing. The root densities of the LM and the RG treatments were usually similar. The inability of the maize plants to establish a competitive root system in the LM limits the supply of nutrients and water and therefore reduces growth and yield. Improving the productivity of maize in living mulches will depend on the ability to achieve a better separation of the rooting volumes of the two species, so that specific steps to facilitate the main crop and control the living mulch can be taken.

Factors affecting parasitism of stem-boring larvae which attack Italian ryegrass were studied. Stem-boring larvae dissected out of tillers from a range of Italian ryegrass cultivars showed parasitism of between 10–65%. However, the level of attack by Chasmodon apterus Nees, a ground-dwelling braconid which dominated the parasitoid complex, did appear to be affected by the plant cultivar, independently of the level of stem-borer infestation.Italian ryegrass cultivars, newly-sown on land previously sown to barley and which had received conventional seed-bed cultivations showed low levels of attack by C. apterus, but increased levels of attack by Halticoptera circulus Walker. The use of the pesticide phorate adversely affected parasitism by c. apterus.
