Detailed semen evaluations were carried out on approximately 363 Santa Gertrudis, 5/8 Brahman and Brahman bulls on 12 different properties across northern Australia, as part of systematic breeding soundness examinations. A subset of bulls (n=245) were subsequently mated in groups, to cows and heifers at bull:female ratios of 2.5-6.0%, with the paternity of resulting calves being determined by microsatellite DNA testing. Motility traits of semen and spermatozoa were moderately repeatable and correlated with each other, but were unrelated to calf output. The percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa in ejaculates was moderately to highly repeatable (e.g. r=0.10-0.64). The most common morphological abnormalities seen were mid-piece abnormalities, in particular, distal mid-piece reflex associated with a cytoplasmic droplet. Semen quality, particularly percent normal spermatozoa, was consistently related to calf output. In general, bulls with <50% normal spermatozoa sired few calves while bulls with the highest calf outputs had >70% normal spermatozoa. The presence or absence of heparin binding proteins in semen did not influence calf output. Semen from 93% of tested bulls was positive for heparin binding proteins. These results confirm that examination of semen, in particular, evaluation of percent morphologically normal spermatozoa, should be included in the breeding soundness examination of bulls.  相似文献

Bull breeding soundness evaluation (BBSE) usually neglects the libido and mating ability evaluation. The internal artificial vagina (IAV) permits semen sampling, as well as mating ability evaluation. Few studies have been performed using IAV with young bulls and there are none with Bos indicus bulls. The present study evaluated sexual behavior, mating ability and semen quality in young Bos taurus (Devon) and B. indicus (Nellore) bulls using the IAV device. In the first experiment, 52 Devon bulls, 18-25 months old were observed, and the behavior and mating ability recorded over a 10-min period within a restrained mount-cow with an IAV inserted. In the second experiment, 20 Nellore bulls, 20-30 months old were evaluated over a 20 min period. Of the 52 Devon bulls, 45 (86.5%) had semen recovered with the IAV, 31 (69.0%) were considered satisfactory. Nellore bulls exhibited a different sexual behavior, with 10 bulls not showing any interest in the females. Four bulls demonstrated sexual interest only once, e.g., sniffing, two showed interest on more than one occasion, and four had more than two mounts or mounting attempts. None out of the Nellore bulls was collected with IAV. The IAV was an effective and welfare-promoting animal technology for the evaluation of semen quality and mating ability of B. taurus bulls. However, the IAV was not adequate for young Nellore bulls, probably due to their quiescent sexual behavior and delayed sexual maturity. Further studies are needed to evaluate the performance of the IAV for older Nellore bulls.  相似文献

Angus, Polled Hereford and Santa Gertrudis bulls were subjected to a breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) just prior to being exposed to cows for 90 to 95 days in single-sire units under natural breeding conditions on pasture. Forty-eight of 55 bulls subjected to scrotal and semen evaluations passed the BSE and were considered acceptable for breeding. Of the bulls that passed BSE, 18 (six bulls from each breed) were used for breeding for each yr of the 2-yr study. Of the bulls used for breeding, breed of sire differences were significant for scrotal circumference and calving rate, while differences among sires within breed of sire were significant for secondary morphology, motility score and calving rate. The difference between means for bulls used vs bulls that failed BSE was significant for all eight traits. Correlations among various scrotal and semen evaluations were compared for bulls used vs bulls that failed BSE. Of the eight traits, only the motility score was significantly correlated with the calving rate. After the exclusion of bulls that failed to pass BSE, there remained differences (P<0.01) among bulls within breed of sire for calving rate. Thus, there is a need for an additional easy-to-use procedure that would more accurately predict the breeding performance of bulls.  相似文献

Semen collected from reindeer bulls in an artificial vagina was used for the artificial insemination of 16 reindeer cows: two with undiluted semen, five with diluted semen and nine with frozen semen. The two cows which received undiluted semen gave birth to normal calves 217 days later. The other cows returned to oestrus 23.5 days (mean) after insemination and subsequently calved, having been served by a fertile bull.  相似文献

A total of 1127 breeding soundness examinations was conducted on 1005 bulls utilizing the method of examination and criteria for classifying bulls of the Society for Theriogenology. Classification of bulls according to breeding soundness potentials was as follows: 83.5% of the bulls were satisfactory, 9.0% of the bulls were questionable, 6.9% of the bulls were unsatisfactory and .6% of the bulls could not be classified. There were no breed differences in classifications. After 60 months of age there was a greater incidence of unsatisfactory potential breeders. Of the 178 questionable and unsatisfactory bulls, 54 were re-evaluated after a rest period of approximately 72 days. Questionable and unsatisfactory bulls less than two years of age improved to satisfactory status on subsequent examinations more often than bulls greater than 2 years of age (P<.05). Questionable or unsatisfactory potential breeders with clinical abnormalities did not attain satisfactory status on subsequent examinations as often as questionable or unsatisfactory bulls without clinical abnormalities (P<.05). Of 942 satisfactory potential breeders, 120 bulls did not give a satisfactory semen sample on the first collection attempt, but did respond with satisfactory semen on subsequent attempts during the same examination period. In 1127 examinations, 7 bulls (.6%) did not respond to the electroejaculator.Breeding stock has for years been selected on the basis of conformation, carcass quality, rate of gain, feed conversion, mothering ability, and color markings. Many producers are now including breeding soundness examinations as a basis for selecting breeding animals. Although there have been many papers published describing various methods of clinically determining breeding potential in bulls, there are only a few reports summarizing the results when any of the described methods have been applied to large numbers of bulls. The University of Missouri Veterinary Clinic has been one of the major collection centers in the State of Missouri for conducting breeding soundness examinations for a number of years due to its central location and close proximity to many of the state-tested bull sales. A summary of 1127 breeding soundness examinations is being reported.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with 24 bulls in which semen collection was attempted by transrectal massage (RM) and electroejaculation (EE). In experiment 1, bulls received the following treatments on successive semen collection days: saline 10 min prior to electroejaculation (control); saline 10 min prior to 2 min of transrectal massage followed by electroejaculation; cloprostenol (CLO) 10 min prior to 2 min of transrectal massage followed by electroejaculation; oxytocin (OXY) 10 min prior to 2 min of transrectal massage followed by electroejaculation. Transrectal massage consisted of general, back and forth motion over the ampullae, prostate and urethra with a flattened hand.

In experiment 2, bulls received saline (control), oxytocin, or cloprostenol 10 min before attempting semen collection by transrectal massage. Massage was applied specifically to the ampullae for a maximum of 5 min or until a semen sample was obtained. Electroejaculation was attempted in all bulls following transrectal massage.

In experiment 1, semen was obtained in <1% of bulls by transrectal massage. However, by using an improved massage technique in experiment 2, semen was obtained in 97.2% of attempts. Semen was obtained in 96.9 and 98.9% of attempts by electroejaculation in experiments 1 and 2, respectively.

Oxytocin treatment increased the time to penile protrusion during electroejaculation in experiment 1 and during massage in experiment 2. In experiment 1, oxytocin decreased the time to semen emission and tended to decrease the number of electroejaculation stimuli to semen emission. Cloprostenol treatment, in experiment 1, resulted in an increased number of electroejaculation stimuli to penile protrusion, but did not affect the number of stimuli required for semen emission.

Massage of the ampullae prior to electroejaculation reduced both the time to semen emission and the number of electroejaculation stimuli required for semen emission. Transrectal massage of the ampullae was very effective in this experiment for producing semen emission, but quantity of semen samples was less than for electroejaculation. The usefulness of transrectal massage for semen collection in breeding soundness evaluations needs to be investigated further under field conditions.  相似文献

The effects of four seasons of semen collection and of artificial insemination on conception in dairy cows were studied. The solstices and equinoxes (December, March, June and September) defined the beginning and/or end of each season. Semen was collected from 973 progeny-test bulls over 8 years at the two Norwegian AI stations at 60.8 degrees N and 63.4 degrees N where artificial light was used to provide a minimum photoperiod of 10 h/day. The effect of using semen of elite bulls during progeny testing and after selection as elite sires also was investigated. Norwegian Red (NRF) cows were inseminated over a 7-year period using progeny test semen and over the last 4 years of the same period using the semen of the elite sires. The probability of conception to only first inseminations for cows up to, and including, the fifth lactation was assessed by 56-day non-return rate (56d NRR) and calving rate. Two data sets were analysed which excluded cows culled within 270 days of AI or included such cows as non-calving. The reasons for culling were categorised as those for fertility problems or all other reasons. Semen was used for AI irrespective of the season in which it had been collected. Season of semen collection did not affect 56d NRR but calving rate was significantly higher (by 0.5-0.8%, approximately; P < 0.01) for semen collected in the December-March period, when photoperiod was increasing, than at other times of the year. The season in which AI was performed showed a peak of 56d NRR in spring for heifers (P < 0.01) and in summer for parous animals (P < 0.01). For calving rate, however, no seasonal peak was found in heifers, whereas pluriparous cows had much higher calving rates in summer and autumn/early winter than late winter and spring (P < 0.01). Semen of elite sires resulted in higher calving rates by 0.5 (NS) to 1.9% (P < 0.01) when used after selection than when used during progeny testing. The difference between the calving rate achieved when the semen from elite sires was used during progeny testing and after selection indicates that farmers select different classes of cows for submission to AI by progeny test bulls and sires. The 56d NRR was not as good as calving rate for assessing seasonal and other effects on conception rates.  相似文献

The effect of trypanosomosis on reaction time and semen characteristics of 12 Zebu (Bunaji) x Friesian crossbred bulls aged between 3 and 5 years was studied for a duration of 12 weeks. Four of the bulls were infected with Trypanosoma vivax, another four with Trypanosoma congolense and the remaining four bulls served as controls. Rectal temperatures and haematological parameters were monitored twice weekly. The pre-infection mean value of the rectal temperature was 38.3 degrees C, and this rose to a mean of between 40.5 and 41.1 degrees C in the infected animals. Concurrently, the infected animals exhibited signs of anaemia shown by pale mucous membranes and decreased packed cell volume (PCV), weight loss, lethargy, weakness and dullness. The reaction time (ejaculation time) of semen collection significantly increased from a pre-infection mean value of 20.46-25.14 s to a mean of 290.33-301.15 s within 12 weeks post-infection. Semen characteristics deteriorated progressively within the same period in the infected bulls. There were highly significant and drastic decreases in sperm concentration and volume of semen and increases in sperm morphological defects. By the third week, all the infected bulls were unfit for breeding because of very poor semen characteristics. Deterioration, also characterized by oligospermia at 6 weeks post-infection in all bulls which later culminated in azoospermia in two bulls infected with T. vivax and two bulls infected with T. congolense continued to the end of the investigation. The present results indicate that trypanosomosis due to T. vivax and T. congolense infections is very pathogenic and devastating in its effect on the reaction time (ejaculation time) and semen characteristics which resulted in very poor semen quality. The practical implication is infertility and sterility in Zebu x Friesian crossbred bulls in trypanosome endemic areas.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the relationship of age and body weight to testicular development and to establish norms for breeding soundness evaluations of Murrah buffalo bulls. Testicular measurements of 133 Murrah buffalo bulls of various ages were recorded with a caliper and a tape. Semen was collected twice a week for 5 weeks from groups of bulls which were 25-36 (n=17), 37-48 (n=16), 49-60 (n=14), of >60 (n=10) months of age. After examining volume, sperm concentration, and progressive motility semen was diluted in Tris-citric acid-egg yolk-fructose extender and frozen in 0.5 ml French straws. Testicular measurements of buffalo bulls were lower than those recorded for European breeds of cattle bulls. Nevertheless, like cattle bulls, scrotal circumference was highly correlated with other testicular measurements. Also, it had a significant positive relationship with semen volume and sperm concentration per ejaculate. Average sperm output per week in order of increasing age group was 15.3, 18.2, 19.8 and 23.6 x 10(9). Corresponding values for sperm output per week per gram of testis were 59.1, 45.8, 41.1, 36.2 x 10(6) indicating a reduction in spermatogenesis per unit of testis with advancing age. Compared to European breeds, daily sperm output in Murrah bulls was nearly 45% lower, presumably due to their nearly 40% lower scrotal circumference than Holstein bulls of the same age. These results indicate that in buffalo, as in cattle, scrotal circumference is a useful indicator of potential sperm output and may serve as an important criterion for selecting young bulls as AI sires.  相似文献

An instrument called the Optibreed, BullMate sperm quality analyzer (SQA) contains a densitometer for determining sperm cell concentration and an optical sensor to evaluate light deflections caused by sperm movement. Analysis of light deflections enables the generation of a value called the sperm quality index (SQI). The SQI represents the quality of a semen sample defined by sperm motility, concentration, viability and morphology. The SQA was compared to conventional, microscopic techniques for determining percent motile sperm and sperm concentration in bull semen samples and evaluated for its ability to classify bulls as satisfactory or unsatisfactory potential breeders. Semen samples were collected from 105 mature beef bulls by electroejaculation (day 1) and from 51 of the same bulls by internal artificial vagina (IAV) on day 2. SQI values were arranged into 20 categories in increments of 50units from 0 to 1000units. Percent motile sperm and sperm concentration values from both methods were significantly positively correlated (P<0.000) with respective r values of 0.82 and 0.80. A calculation of kappa to evaluate the differences in percent motile sperm generated by each system yielded a value of 0.20 and 0.54 for unweighted and weighted determinations, respectively. The intraclass correlation coefficient used to evaluate the reliability of sperm cell concentration determinations was 0.62 (P<0.05). SQI values generated on days 1 and 2 ranged from 0-994 to 0-906, respectively. Bulls were categorized as satisfactory or unsatisfactory potential breeders in all categories. The most appropriate SQI for determining whether a bull was a satisfactory or unsatisfactory potential breeder was 500 with respective sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values (PPV) and negative predictive values (NPV) of 81, 65, 90.79 and 44.83%. In this experiment the BullMate SQA was not a reliable substitute for conventional semen analysis and was not useful for determining bull breeding soundness.  相似文献

Semen collected from dairy Israeli-Friesian bulls in the winter and summer was pelleted-frozen and used for inseminations in the collection season, in the other season, and after a 12-month storage period. The semen quality, as assessed by the percentage of ejaculates with initial poor motility and low sperm density and the percentage of spermatozoa surviving the freezing-thawing process, and those revealing acrosomal and tail abnormalities after thawing, was slightly and non-significantly lower in summer than in winter. The fertility of semen collected in both seasons was not affected by a 12-month storage period. The use of winter semen in summer did not improve the low fertility of cows in that season compared with those inseminated with summer semen. It appears from the results of this study that the summer decrease in the fertility of the inseminations is due to the adverse effect of this season on the fertility of the cows.  相似文献

The present study was based on data obtained from artificial inseminations (AIs) performed with cryopreserved semen from elite bulls used in the Norwegian breeding program. Semen was diluted to standardize the number of spermatozoa to 18 million per AI dose. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the net sperm concentration at semen collection and the storage period in liquid nitrogen have any effect on probability of conception in dairy cattle. We demonstrated that the natural range of sperm concentration at semen collection within some of the bulls was associated with the probability of conception. However, no primary trend among bulls was found on the effect of sperm concentration at semen collection. This appears to be due to differences among bulls in their response to the dilution ratio of seminal plasma to extender. The effect of storage time was investigated in semen that had been stored between 1000 days and 2400 days in AI straws in liquid nitrogen at the AI center. Our findings showed that use of semen with the longest storage period, i.e. 1951-2400 days, resulted in a more than one percentage point lower probability of conception than semen with a shorter storage period. In conclusion, the net sperm concentration at semen collection, which affects the dilution ratio of seminal plasma to extender, should be considered individually among bulls to achieve optimal reproductive performance. Furthermore, this study gives support to the idea that a measurable degree of damage to the spermatozoa could occur during the preservation time in liquid nitrogen.  相似文献

Male reproductive performances are often ignored in cattle breeding programmes, although semen traits might be used to improve bull breeding soundness. Effects of genetic and environmental factors on semen production and quality traits were estimated in 693 Piemontese bulls with the aim of providing the first estimates of genetic parameters for semen traits for this breed. Volume and concentrations of individual ejaculates (up to three per each test-day), and volume, concentration, total number of spermatozoa and post-thawing progressive motility of within test-day pooled semen were available for 19 060 ejaculates. Bulls reached the maximum amount of daily semen production after their third year of age, with concentration rapidly increasing until 23 months of age, and then slowly decreasing. Semen volume was at its highest when collection days were at least 15 days apart, whereas the maximum concentration was reached when the interval was 6 days. Heritability estimates were generally moderate (0.14–0.26), and low for progressive motility (0.08). Estimates of genetic correlation among the volumes of the individual ejaculates were high and positive (≥0.79), as were the genetic correlations among their concentrations (≥0.46). Genetic correlations among volume and concentration traits varied from −0.47 (with a 95% high posterior density interval ranging from −0.65 to −0.23) to −0.32 (with a 95% high posterior density interval ranging from −0.55 to −0.09). Progressive motility was unrelated with the other traits, but moderately positively correlated with volumes of the second and third ejaculates. The magnitude of heritabilities showed that selection for semen traits is possible. However, the unfavourable relationship between volume and concentration must be taken into account if a future selection programme is to be established.  相似文献

Bull breeding soundness parameters, semen characteristics and sexual behavior were evaluated for effects on reproductive performance in single-sire beef herds. A total of 155 cow herds (Angus, 50 herds; Hereford, 40 herds; Brahman, 46 herds; and Senepol, 19 herds) bred to bulls of the same breed were observed for 8 yr. All bulls produced adequate quality semen and had scrotal circumference (SC) >/= 30 cm. Reproductive performance was evaluated by the conception rate (CON), conception rate during the first 21 d of the breeding season (21dCON), mean calving date (MCD), and mean calving date of the first half of the herd to calve (HHCD). Correlations were determined between breeding soundness parameters and reproductive performance for all bulls combined, by breed, and by age. The Cp statistic was used to select models for the effects of parameters on CON, 21dCON, MCD and HHCD. Breeding season length and breed had significant effects. The percentages of normal cells, proximal droplets, detached heads and the semen score (motility plus percentage of normal cells) had a significant effect on CON when all bulls were considered. After the effect of season was deleted, the most significant parameter affecting CON in the Brahman was the percentage of detached sperm heads. In the Angus, motility was significantly correlated with all reproductive performance indices. In the Hereford, breeding soundness examination score (BSE) was positively correlated with 21dCON.  相似文献

Our objective was to perform a retrospective analysis of breeding soundness evaluations (BSEs) as classified by the 1993 Society for Theriogenology (SFT) guidelines [Chenoweth et al., Guidelines for using the bull breeding soundness evaluation form, in: Theriogenology Handbook, 1993, pp. B-10]. Data included BSE information obtained from five performance-testing stations in South Carolina (SC1, SC2, SC3) and Tennessee (TN1, TN2) from 1986 through 1999 on 3648 Angus, Brangus, Charolais, Chianina, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Polled Hereford, Santa Gertrudis, Simbrah, and Simmental bulls. Analyses were simplified by classifying all bulls as either satisfactory or unsatisfactory potential breeders. Of the 3648 bulls evaluated, 76.2% were classified as satisfactory potential breeders. Of all bulls evaluated, 4.0% were unsatisfactory due to inadequate spermatozoal motility, 7.0% due to inadequate spermatozoal morphology and 2.6% due to a combination of inadequate motility and morphology. Unsatisfactory classifications due to non-spermatozoal parameters out of all bulls were 10.2%, with 7.1% for inadequate scrotal circumference and 3.1% for physical abnormalities. For satisfactory and unsatisfactory bulls, respectively, means and standard deviations were 35.8 +/- 2.7 and 33.0 +/- 4.1 cm (P < 0.001) for scrotal circumference, 63 +/- 18 and 35 +/- 24% (P < 0.001) for percent motility, and 86 +/- 7 and 63 +/- 21% (P < 0.001) for percent normal morphology.  相似文献

The effect of the collection method on the characteristics of fresh semen and the recovery of spermatozoa after thawing was studied in 30 Zebu bulls (Bos indicus ) and in 30 Brown Swiss (Bos taurus ) bulls. Semen was collected by using an artificial vagina and by electroejaculation; the ejaculates were individually evaluated. Semen was diluted for freezing in skimmed milk and stored in 0.5-ml French straws, at a concentration of 30 x 10(6) spermatozoa. Data were evaluated by analysis of variance using a factorial model which included collection method, breed effect, and interaction between method and breed, with each bull as a block. Higher volume and pH of the semen was obtained following electroejaculation. Conversely, higher concentration prior to freezing and better progressive motility after thawing was observed in semen collected with an artificial vagina. No differences in motility were obtained in fresh semen between methods. Better post-thaw recovery occurred when the semen was collected by an artificial vagina, independently of the breed type.  相似文献

Crossbred (Bos taurus) yearling beef bulls were assessed for breeding soundness and physical traits prior to multi-sire natural mating at pasture. Bulls (n = 60) were assigned to six groups of nine or 10 bulls and two bull-groups were rotated on 14-day intervals during a 63-day mating season in each breeding herd (n = 3) of 191-196 cows. The remaining bulls (n = 14) were maintained under similar environmental conditions without mating exposure. Bulls were observed during mating and assessed for breeding soundness and changes following mating. Bulls used for breeding (UFB) lost 77 kg of body weight and declined from body condition scores of 6 to 4.5, whereas bulls not used for breeding (NUB) maintained body condition scores of 6 and gained 27 kg. The UFB bulls incurred a 75% total injury rate with 63% incidence of lameness and 12% incidence of reproductive injuries, resulting in a 22% attrition rate. Only 45% were physically sound at the end of mating. Scrotal circumference declined in UFB bulls (-4.58%) and increased in NUB bulls (2.49%). From the 98% BSE-satisfactory rate (UFB) prior to breeding, only 61% were BSE-satisfactory post-breeding. The NUB bulls declined from 57 to 36% satisfactory. The BSE classification was influenced by significant increases in abnormal spermatozoa (primary and secondary), which was significantly associated with injuries incurred during mating. Group and breed differences in injury rates and BSE-status following mating were evident. Environmental conditions and mating activity influenced bull seminal quality and physical condition. Pregnancy rates in all three breeding herds (91-96%) were similar, with insignificant differences between bull-groups; the effects of physical and reproductive changes on individual bull fertility were immeasurable.  相似文献

Semen from two high fertility Holstein bulls with extensive histories in artificial insemination was specially processed for the purpose of sexing and then frozen. The semen was used to inseminate 200 open crossbred beef heifers carefully selected for reproductive soundness from a much larger group. Animals were inseminated alternately with the semen from one of the two bulls and subsequently slaughtered. There were 96 fetuses, ranging in age from 63 to 88 days, which were carefully examined for general appearance, fetal crown-rump length and body weight. There was no effect of sire on fetal size, but the difference between fetal sexes was significant, with the male fetus being appreciably heavier. The regression of fetal length on fetal age was linear and the regression of fetal weight on fetal age was curvilinear. Fetal age accounted for 92% to 96% of the variation in fetal weight and also in crown-rump length.  相似文献

A total of 17 bulls was used to study the effects of boldenone undecylenate on growth and semen characteristics in beef bulls. In trial 1 nine mature mixed-breed beef bulls with satisfactory semen quality were divided into two groups. Group I (n = 5) received boldenone undecylenate (1.1 mg/kg) at 21 d intervals for a total of seven treatments (147 d). Group II (n = 4) served as untreated controls. Semen was collected from each group by electroejaculation on each treatment day and evaluated according to the standards of the Society for Theriogenology. Although neither the percentage of spermatozoa with primary or secondary morphological abnormalities was different, the ejaculates of Group I bulls contained a higher percentage of abnormal spermatozoa than those in Group II. In trial 2, eight mixed-breed bull calves, average weight 140.4 kg, were maintained under drylot conditions in a single paddock. The bulls were divided into two equal groups. Group I (n = 4) received boldenone undecylenate as in Trial 1. Group II (n = 4) served as untreated controls. The bulls were weighed and the scrotal circumference (SC) was measured every 21 d until it reached 30 cm, at which time semen was collected and evaluated as in Trial 1. Group I bulls had a higher percentage of spermatozoa with primary morphological abnormalities than bulls in Group II. Group I bulls had a higher average daily gain (ADG) than Group II bulls and required 21 d longer for the SC to reach 30 cm. Semen quality for all bulls was satisfactory at each sampling day.  相似文献

The relationships between natural service fertility of beef bulls and the components of breeding soundness evaluation, age, preweaning average daily gain, yearling weight and scores of two libido tests were studied in two seedstock herds. In one of the herds (YBH), 15 yearling bulls were rotated during six-week breeding season so that each group of five bulls served the cows for a period of one week and rested for two weeks before the next exposure. Five older bulls (one 3-year old and four 2-year old) were assigned to the other herd (MBH) during the entire breeding season (six weeks). The progeny of each bull were identified by blood typing.Calf crop was 6.4% higher (P=0.14) in the MBH compared with that in the YBH. There were large differences in fertility between the bulls in the MBH. The 3-year old bull sired 40.9% of the calves, presumably due to his high social dominance order. The third group of yearling bulls, which served the herd during the third and sixth weeks of breeding, sired the highest number of calves (49.4%) compared with the other two groups (28.4% and 22.2%). In each of the groups one and two of the yearling bulls, one bull did not produce any progeny, while another one sired 44% of the calves. The correlation coefficients between fertility of the bulls and the traits used to predict their fertilizing capacity were generally small and inconsistent in different groups, when the effect of age in the mixed age group was removed. The correlation coefficients of bull fertility with scrotal circumference and reproductive system score were higher and more consistent in different groups as compared with the other traits studied.  相似文献
