Facial expressions aid social transactions and serve as socialization tools, with smiles signaling approval and reward, and angry faces signaling disapproval and punishment. The present study examined whether the subjective experience of positive vs. negative facial expressions differs between children and adults. Specifically, we examined age-related differences in biases toward happy and angry facial expressions. Young children (5–7 years) and young adults (18–29 years) rated the intensity of happy and angry expressions as well as levels of experienced arousal. Results showed that young children—but not young adults—rated happy facial expressions as both more intense and arousing than angry faces. This finding, which we replicated in two independent samples, was not due to differences in the ability to identify facial expressions, and suggests that children are more tuned to information in positive expressions. Together these studies provide evidence that children see unambiguous adult emotional expressions through rose-colored glasses, and suggest that what is emotionally relevant can shift with development.  相似文献

Foraging skills of young individuals are assumed to be inferior to those of adults. The reduced efficiency of naive individuals may be the primary cause of the high juvenile mortality and explain the deferment of maturity in long-lived species. However, the study of juvenile and immature foraging behaviour has been limited so far. We used satellite telemetry to compare the foraging movements of juveniles, immatures and breeding adult wandering albatrosses Diomedea exulans, a species where foraging success is positively influenced by the distance covered daily. We showed that juveniles are able to use favourable winds as soon as the first month of independence, but cover shorter distances daily and spend more time sitting on water than adults during the first two months after fledging. These reduced movement capacities do not seem to be the cause of higher juvenile mortality. Moreover, juveniles almost never restrict their movement to specific areas, as adults and immatures frequently do over shelf edges or oceanic zones, which suggest that the location of appropriate areas is learned through experience. Immatures and adults have equivalent movement capacities, but when they are central place foragers, i.e. when adults breed or immatures come to the colony to display and pair, immatures make shorter trips than adults. The long duration of immaturity in this species seems to be related to a long period of learning to integrate the foraging constraints associated with reproduction and central place foraging. Our results indicate that foraging behaviour of young albatrosses is partly innate and partly learned progressively over immaturity. The first months of learning appear critical in terms of survival, whereas the long period of immaturity is necessary for young birds to attain the skills necessary for efficient breeding without fitness costs.  相似文献

Doxorubicin (DOX) is widely used to treat various cancers affecting adults and children; however, its clinical application is limited by its cardiotoxicity. Previous studies have shown that children are more susceptible to the cardiotoxic effects of DOX than adults, which may be related to different maturity levels of cardiomyocyte, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Moreover, researchers investigating DOX‐induced cardiotoxicity caused by human‐induced pluripotent stem cell‐derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC‐CMs) have shown that dexrazoxane, the recognized cardioprotective drug for treating DOX‐induced cardiotoxicity, does not alleviate the toxicity of DOX on hiPSC‐CMs cultured for 30 days. We have suggested that this may be ascribed to the immaturity of the 30 days hiPSC‐CMs. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms of DOX induced cardiotoxicity in cardiomyocytes of different maturity. We selected 30‐day‐old and 60‐day‐old hiPSC‐CMs (day 30 and day 60 groups), which we term ‘immature’ and ‘relatively mature’ hiPSC‐CMs, respectively. The day 30 CMs were found to be more susceptible to DOX than the day 60 CMs. DOX leads to more ROS (reactive oxygen species) production in the day 60 CMs than in the relatively immature group due to increased mitochondria number. Moreover, the day 60 CMs mainly expressed topoisomerase IIβ presented less severe DNA damage, whereas the day 30 CMs dominantly expressed topoisomerase IIα exhibited much more severe DNA damage. These results suggest that immature cardiomyocytes are more sensitive to DOX as a result of a higher concentration of topoisomerase IIα, which leads to more DNA damage.  相似文献

Metal distribution in an organism at any one time is a resultant of many extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Improved analytic methodology has made it feasible to obtain highly sensitive determinations for many metals in a single sample. Thus, it is now feasible to examine patterns of metal distribution. We report on a study of the effect of age on metal patterns in the common tern,Sterna hirundo, a fisheating seabird. We contrast the levels of nine metals in the liver of adult and young terns and compared these with levels in tern eggs. Unlike many previous studies, adults did not have significantly higher levels of metals, although for most metals, levels in eggs were significantly lower than liver levels of young and adults. The intermetal correlations showed more significant positive correlations for adults and eggs than for chicks, the latter showing instead a correlational chaos, probably reflecting the immaturity of their physiologic defense mechanisms and the absence of dynamic equilibrium.  相似文献

Beyond the canonical neurogenic niches, there are dormant neuronal precursors in several regions of the adult mammalian brain. Dormant precursors maintain persisting post-mitotic immaturity from birth to adulthood, followed by staggered awakening, in a process that is still largely unresolved. Strikingly, due to the slow rate of awakening, some precursors remain immature until old age, which led us to question whether their awakening and maturation are affected by aging. To this end, we studied the maturation of dormant precursors in transgenic mice (DCX-CreERT2/flox-EGFP) in which immature precursors were labelled permanently in vivo at different ages. We found that dormant precursors are capable of awakening at young age, becoming adult-matured neurons (AM), as well as of awakening at old age, becoming late AM. Thus, protracted immaturity does not prevent late awakening and maturation. However, late AM diverged morphologically and functionally from AM. Moreover, AM were functionally most similar to neonatal-matured neurons (NM). Conversely, late AM were endowed with high intrinsic excitability and high input resistance, and received a smaller amount of spontaneous synaptic input, implying their relative immaturity. Thus, late AM awakening still occurs at advanced age, but the maturation process is slow.  相似文献

The research described in this article tests the hypothesis that caretakers who fear the supernatural will inflict more pain on the children in their charge than will those caretakers who do not fear the supernatural. The hypothesis is drawn from a larger body of theory which states that child training practices influence adult personality, including beliefs in the supernatural—these beliefs in turn influence the training of children. In order to test the hypothesis it was necessary to find a group of people whose adults differ from each other in theirbeliefs in the supernatural and whose children receive differential training. The village of Congo Town, located on Andros Island in the Bahamas, provides such a group of people. In the course of ethnographic fieldwork carried out in 1968 in this village, twenty caretakers were interviewed about the training given to their forty-eight children and grandchildren, as well as about their beliefs in the supernatural. Differences both in beliefs in the supernatural and in child training practices exist. Three specific hypotheses are derived from the major hypothesis described above. Each of these hypotheses is found to be supported by data gathered in Congo Town. Since each of the derived hypotheses receives support, it is concluded that the major hypothesis is confirmed.  相似文献

The study attempted to define characteristics of renal podocytes in nephrotic syndrome glomerulopathies in children with and without glomerular immaturity based on the histochemical expression of cytokeratin 18 (CK 18) and vimentin. Material consisted of 29 renal biopsies performed in the Department of Pediatric Nephrology, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, between 1991 and 2000. The study group included 16 children with mesangial glomerulonephritis (MesGN) and signs of glomerular immaturity and 13 children with MesGN without signs of glomerular immaturity. The control tissue was derived from macroscopically normal renal cortex taken from kidneys resected for localised neoplasms (n=3). In the control samples, the immunocytochemical expression of CK 18 was found only in epithelial cells of proximal and distal tubules. Vimentin was present in all podocytes, some mesangial cells and endothelium. In all cases of children with MesGN with signs of immaturity, both CK 18-positive and vimentin-positive podocytes were found. In all cases of MesGN without immaturity we revealed CK 18-negative podocytes but with distinct vimentin-positive expression. Reorganisation of cytoskeletal proteins within immature podocytes may be associated with the unfavourable clinical course of nephrotic syndrome in children. The application of antibodies against intermediate filaments may help to differentiate between mature and immature forms of MesGN.  相似文献

Background

Due to immunologic immaturity, IFN-γ-producing T cell responses may be decreased in young children compared to adults, thus we hypothesized that IFN-γ responses to mycobacterial antigens in household contacts exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) would be impaired in young children relative to adults. The objective of this study was to compare whole blood IFN-γ production in response to mycobacterial antigens between children and adults in Uganda.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We studied household contacts of persons with culture-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) enrolled in a cohort study conducted in Kampala, Uganda. Whole blood IFN-γ production in response to Mtb culture-filtrate antigens was measured by ELISA and compared between infants (<2 years old, n = 80), young children (2 <5 years old, n = 216), older children (5 <15 years old, n = 443) and adults (≥15 years old, n = 528). We evaluated the relationship between IFN-γ responses and the tuberculin skin test (TST), and between IFN-γ responses and epidemiologic factors that reflect exposure to Mtb, and the effect of prior BCG vaccination on IFN-γ responses. Young household contacts demonstrated robust IFN-γ responses comparable to those of adults that were associated with TST and known risk factors for infection. There was no effect of prior BCG immunization on the IFN-γ response.

Conclusions/Significance

Young children in a TB endemic setting can mount robust IFN-γ responses generally comparable to those of adults, and as in adults, these responses correlated with the TST and known epidemiologic risk factors for Mtb infection.  相似文献

Adult marine mammal muscles rely upon a suite of adaptations for sustained aerobic metabolism in the absence of freely available oxygen (O2). Although the importance of these adaptations for supporting aerobic diving patterns of adults is well understood, little is known about postnatal muscle development in young marine mammals. However, the typical pattern of vertebrate muscle development, and reduced tissue O2 stores and diving ability of young marine mammals suggest that the physiological properties of harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) pup muscle will differ from those of adults. We examined myoglobin (Mb) concentration, and the activities of citrate synthase (CS), β-hydroxyacyl coA dehydrogenase (HOAD), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in muscle biopsies from harbor seal pups throughout the nursing period, and compared these biochemical parameters to those of adults. Pups had reduced O2 carrying capacity ([Mb] 28–41% lower than adults) and reduced metabolically scaled catabolic enzyme activities (LDH/RMR 20–58% and CS/RMR 29–89% lower than adults), indicating that harbor seal pup muscles are biochemically immature at birth and weaning. This suggests that pup muscles do not have the ability to support either the aerobic or anaerobic performance of adult seals. This immaturity may contribute to the lower diving capacity and behavior in younger pups. In addition, the trends in myoglobin concentration and enzyme activity seen in this study appear to be developmental and/or exercise-driven responses that together work to produce the hypoxic endurance phenotype seen in adults, rather than allometric effects due to body size.  相似文献

Many secretory diarrheas including cholera are more prevalent and fulminant in young infants than in older children and adults. Cholera toxin (CT) elicits a cAMP-dependent chloride secretory response in intestinal epithelia, which accounts for the fundamental pathogenesis of this toxigenic diarrhea. We have previously reported that the action of this bacterial enterotoxin is excessive in immature enterocytes and under developmental regulation. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that enhanced endocytosis by immature human enterocytes may, in part, account for the excessive secretory response to CT noted in the immature intestine and that enterocyte endocytosis of CT is developmentally regulated. To test this hypothesis, we used specific inhibitors to define endocytic pathways in mature and immature cell lines. We showed that internalization of CT in adult enterocytes is less and occurs via the caveolae/raft-mediated pathway in contrast to an enhanced immature human enterocyte CT uptake that occurs via a clathrin pathway. We also present evidence that this clathrin pathway is developmentally regulated as demonstrated by its response to corticosteroids, a known maturation factor that causes a decreased CT endocytosis by this pathway.  相似文献

The heart rate, peripheral arterial blood pressure (BP), and respiration parameters were simultaneously recorded in adult subjects and young schoolchildren in two modes of testing: using a mask with airflow sensors that did not restrict air inflow but increased the pulmonary dead space and without the mask. It was demonstrated that wearing the mask was a functional test for the state of the cardiorespiratory system in both age groups; however, the responses of the children’s and adults’ bodies differed from each other, probably, because of the functional immaturity of the sympathetic component of the autonomic control. In adults, the parameters of the cardiovascular system did not change, except that the heart rate variability spectrum was redistributed toward an enhancement of the high-frequency component. In children, testing with the mask on decreased the systolic BP; increased the heart rate; and, as evidenced by the spectral characteristics of BP variability, activated the sympathetic nervous system.  相似文献

Coherence (COH) of rhythmic components of the EEG α rhythm at rest was analyzed to demonstrate that the maturation of deep regulatory systems (RSs) of the brain at different levels substantially affected the functional organization of the cerebral cortex and the time course of the formation of intercentral connections in young schoolchildren. The specific effect of fronto-thalamic regulatory system immaturity (FRSI) was a decrease in the α-rhythm COH predominantly in neighboring left-hemispheric derivations of foci in the anterior temporal area. A deficit of nonspecific activation had the strongest effect on the α-rhythm integration of right-hemispheric areas, although this effect was less distinct than that of FRSI and remained only as a tendency by the age of nine to ten years. Children with normal and functionally immature cerebral RSs differed from each other with respect to age-related changes in the corticocortical connections, especially in the left hemisphere. In the norm, intense growth of functional connections in the left hemisphere ceased in the period between seven to eight and nine to ten years of age; in contrast, children with RS immaturity exhibited a trend towards an increasingly greater amount of these connections in both hemispheres, which, apparently, corresponded to an earlier stage of ontogeny.  相似文献

We examined whether social priming of cognitive states affects the inhibitory process in elderly adults, as aging is related to deficits in inhibitory control. Forty-eight elderly adults and 45 young adults were assigned to three groups and performed a cognitive control task (Simon task), which was followed by 3 different manipulations of social priming (i.e., thinking about an 82 year-old person): 1) negative—characterized by poor cognitive abilities, 2) neutral—characterized by acts irrelevant to cognitive abilities, and 3) positive—excellent cognitive abilities. After the manipulation, the Simon task was performed again. Results showed improvement in cognitive control effects in seniors after the positive manipulation, indicated by a significant decrease in the magnitude of the Simon and interference effects, but not after the neutral and negative manipulations. Furthermore, a healthy pattern of sequential effect (Gratton) that was absent before the manipulation in all 3 groups appeared after the positive manipulation. Namely, the Simon effect was only present after congruent but not after incongruent trials for the positive manipulation group. No influence of manipulations was found in young adults. These meaningful results were replicated in a second experiment and suggest a decrease in conflict interference resulting from positive cognitive state priming. Our study provides evidence that an implicit social concept of a positive cognitive condition in old age can affect the control process of the elderly and improve cognitive abilities.  相似文献

The upper respiratory tract (URT) is a crucial site for host defense, as it is home to bacterial communities that both modulate host immune defense and serve as a reservoir of potential pathogens. Young children are at high risk of respiratory illness, yet the composition of their URT microbiota is not well understood. Microbial profiling of the respiratory tract has traditionally focused on culturing common respiratory pathogens, whereas recent culture-independent microbiome profiling can only report the relative abundance of bacterial populations. In the current study, we used both molecular profiling of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and laboratory culture to examine the bacterial diversity from the oropharynx and nasopharynx of 51 healthy children with a median age of 1.1 years (range 1–4.5 years) along with 19 accompanying parents. The resulting profiles suggest that in young children the nasopharyngeal microbiota, much like the gastrointestinal tract microbiome, changes from an immature state, where it is colonized by a few dominant taxa, to a more diverse state as it matures to resemble the adult microbiota. Importantly, this difference in bacterial diversity between adults and children accompanies a change in bacterial load of three orders of magnitude. This indicates that the bacterial communities in the nasopharynx of young children have a fundamentally different structure from those in adults and suggests that maturation of this community occurs sometime during the first few years of life, a period that includes ages at which children are at the highest risk for respiratory disease.  相似文献

Adolescence and early adulthood are developmental time periods during which creative cognition is highly important for adapting to environmental changes. Divergent thinking, which refers to generating novel and useful solutions to open-ended problems, has often been used as a measure of creative cognition. The first goal of this structural neuroimaging study was to elucidate the relationship between gray matter morphology and performance in the verbal (AUT; alternative uses task) and visuo-spatial (CAT; creative ability test) domain of divergent thinking in adolescents and young adults. The second goal was to test if gray matter morphology is related to brain activity during AUT performance. Neural and behavioral data were combined from a cross-sectional study including 25 adolescents aged 15–17 and 20 young adults aged 25–30. Brain-behavior relationships were assessed without a priori location assumptions and within areas that were activated during an AUT-scanner task. Gray matter volume and cortical thickness were not significantly associated with verbal divergent thinking. However, visuo-spatial divergent thinking (CAT originality and fluency) was positively associated with cortical thickness of the right middle temporal gyrus and left brain areas including the superior frontal gyrus and various occipital, parietal, and temporal areas, independently of age. AUT brain activity was not associated with cortical thickness. The results support an important role of a widespread brain network involved in flexible visuo-spatial divergent thinking, providing evidence for a relation between cortical thickness and visuo-spatial divergent thinking in adolescents and young adults. However, studies including visuo-spatial divergent thinking tasks in the scanner are warranted.  相似文献

This article is a review of literature in developmental psychology concerned with children's thinking about their own bodies. There is an emphasis on ways in which children explain things that they know about their bodies. Very young children (younger than about 7 years of age) may have intuitive understanding of the distinction between the biological nature of the body and ways in which the mind controls and influences the body, but they sometimes explain processes that adults think of as biological in psychological ways. Older children acquire knowledge of internal organs and processes in the body, particularly ones concerned with the transformation of substances. However, they may understand these processes in ways different from that of a basic biological framework. The possibility that children have ideas about vital energies or forces is considered. Some implications for biology education are discussed.  相似文献

While ecogeographic variation in adult human body proportions has been extensively explored, relatively less attention has been paid to the effect of Bergmann's and Allen's rules on human body shape during growth. The relationship between climate and immature body form is particularly important, as immature mortality is high, mechanisms of thermoregulation differ between young and mature humans, and immature body proportions fluctuate due to basic parameters of growth. This study explores changes in immature ecogeographic body proportions via analyses of anthropometric data from children included in Eveleth and Tanner's (1976) Worldwide Variation in Human Growth, as well as limb proportion measurements in eight different skeletal samples. Moderate to strong correlations exist between climatic data and immature stature, weight, BMI, and bi-iliac breadth; these relationships are as strong, if not stronger, in immature individuals as they are in adults. Correlations between climate and trunk height relative to stature are weak or nonexistent. Altitude also has significant effects on immature body form, with children from higher altitudes displaying smaller statures and lower body weights. Brachial and crural indices remain constant over the course of growth and display consistent, moderate correlations with latitude across ontogeny that are just as high as those detected in adults. The results of this study suggest that while some features of immature body form, such as bi-iliac breadth and intralimb indices, are strongly dictated by ecogeographic principles, other characteristics of immature body proportions are influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as nutrition and basic constraints of growth.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that chronic physical exercise improves attentional control in young healthy participants. To do this, we compared the performance of physically active and passive participants in the Attentional Network Task, which allows for the assessment of the executive, orienting and alerting networks. The results showed a selective positive effect of exercise on the executive network. These results extend the evidence gathered in children, older adults and certain clinical populations suggesting that exercise can also improve attentional control in healthy young adults.  相似文献

Worldwide, invasive pneumococcal disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae is most common in young children. In adults, disease rates decline following intermittent colonization and the acquisition of naturally acquired immunity. We characterized mucosal and systemic pneumococcal-specific T-cell responses in African children and adults who contend with intense rates of colonization, up to 100% and 60% respectively. We find most Malawian children have high pneumococcal-specific T-cell responses in tonsil tissue and peripheral blood. In addition, frequent commensalism generates CD25hi (Tregs) which modulate mucosal pneumococcal-specific T-cell responses in some children and ≥50% of adults. We propose that immune regulation may prolong pneumococcal colonization and predispose vulnerable individuals to disease.  相似文献

The spermatogenic cells of the adult and young mice differ by the content of certain electrophoretic fractions of proteins and the activity of a number of enzymes (glucose-6-phosphate, sorbitol and pyruvate dehydrogenases). The expression of age differences changes in the process of differentiation. It is suggested that the differences found are of dual nature: they are due to both the "immaturity" of young animals and the age processes per se in adults; the role of the latter decreases as the differentiation proceeds.  相似文献
