Résumé Nous avons fait élever des larves d'Anergates atratulus par des ouvrières deMyrmica laevinodis à 22°C. Pour y parvenir, il n'est pas utile de faire hivernerensemble les larves d'Anergates et les ouvrières deMyrmica. La présence de larves autochtones n'empêche pas lesMyrmica d'élever des larves d'Anergates. Dans toutes les expériences lesMyrmica ont été soumises au fridavant de recevoir des larves d'Anergates. Aucune reine deMyrmica n'a été utilisée dans ces expériences.Sur les 64 larves d'Anergates que nous avons utilisées, 38 se sont transformées en imagos. C'est au début de l'adoption et au moment des métamorphoses que périrent la plupart des 26Anergates perdus. Les femelles vécurent en général 2 ou 3 jours et cherchèrent très tôt à quitter le nid natal. Les mâles vécurent 2 à 3 semaines.
Summary Larvae ofAnergates atratulus were experimentally reared by workers ofMyrmica laevinodis, at 22°C. An overwintering of both larvae ofAnergates and workers ofMyrmica is not necessary for the success of that experiment. The presence of larvae ofMyrmica does not keep theMyrmica from rearing larvae ofAnergates. The workers ofMyrmica have been cooled, in all the experiments, before receiving larvae ofAnergates. No queen ofMyrmica have been used in that experiments.38 of the 64 larvae ofAnergates used became imagos. Most of the 26 lostAnergates died at the beginning of the adoption and during the metamorphosis. The females lived generally 2 or 3 days and tried, very early, to leave their native nest. The males lived 2 or 3 weeks.

The solvent effects of cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) on the reaction rates and enzyme enantioselectivity in the enantioselective transesterifications of racemic 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol (racemic sulcatol: SUL) and racemic 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol (racemic solketal: SOL) with a series of enol esters catalyzed by Pseudomonas cepacia lipase co-lyophilized with cyclodextrins (-, -, -, partially methylated -,and 2,3,6-tri-O-methyl--cyclodextrin: CyD; CyD; CyD; Me1.78 CyD; Me3CyD) were investigated and compared with those in diisopropyl ether (IPE). In the case of SUL, enzyme activities of the co-lyophilizate with Me1.78 CyD in CPME were lower than those in IPE with every acyl source, however, the absolute enantiopreference was shown in the transesterification with vinyl butyrate (VBR) in IPME. When the substrates were SOL and VBR, the enzyme activities in CPME were greatly enhanced as high as 1.6–9.8-fold, while the enantioselectivities in CPME were comparable to those in IPE.Revisions requested 16 December 2004; Revisions received 17 January 2005  相似文献

Summary The ratio of deuterium to hydrogen (expressed as D) in hydrogen released as water during the combustion of dried plant material was examined. The D value (metabolic hydrogen) determined on plant materials grown under controlled conditions is correlated with pathways of photosynthetic carbon metabolism. C3 plants show mean D values of-132 for shoots and -117 for roots; C4 plants show mean D values of -91 for shoots and-77 for roots and CAM plants a D value of-75 for roots and shoots. The difference between the D value of shoot material from C3 and C4 plants was confirmed in species growing under a range of glasshouse conditions. This difference in D value between C3 and C4 species does not appear to be due to differences in the D value (tissue water) in the plants as a result of physical fractionation of hydrogen isotopes during transpiration. In C3 and C4 plants the hydrogen isotope discrimination is in the same direction as the carbon isotope discrimination and factors contributing to the difference in D values are discussed. In CAM plants grown in the laboratory or collected from the field D values range from-75 to +50 and are correlated with 13C values. When deprived of water, the D value (metabolic hydrogen) in both soluble and insoluble material in leaves of Kalanchoe daigremontiana Hamet et Perr., becomes less negative. These changes may reflect the deuterium enrichment of tissue water during transpiration, or in field conditions, may reflect the different D value of available water in areas of increasing aridity. Whatever the origin of the variable D value in CAM plants, this parameter may be a useful index of the water relations of these plants under natural conditions.  相似文献

The meaning of function statements is not clear. Several authors have come up with different explications. By interviewing biologists I tried to get a picture of how they think about function. Two explications of Feature X of organism S has function F came to the fore: (1) X contributes to F and F contributes to survival/reproduction of S and (2) X does F and that contributes to the evolutionary development of X in S via natural selection. Most biologists also related function to adaptation. Gould and Vrba criticize the ordinary use of adaptation in biology. They propose to use it only in the sense of features developed by natural selection for their current role and to use exaptation for features enhancing fitness, but not developed for this by natural selection. This, however, leaves a terminological gap, because as a consequence only effects of adaptations are functions. Effects of exaptations and effects which are not beneficial, like the production of heart sounds, are placed on the same level. That is not in accordance with the practice of biology. That is why a distinction is made between general, adaptive and exaptive functions: function as a pluralistic concept.Revised version of an earlier paper, published in Dutch in Kennis en Methode, November 1988.  相似文献

The conformations and internal dynamics of the deoxyriboses of d(CGTACG)2 have been determined by NMR measurements at 15°C. The conformations of the sugars were determined using coupling constants and time-dependent NOE measurements. The J-splitting patterns of the H1, H2 and H2 resonances show that the sugars exist as mixtures of conformations near C2 endo (south) and C3 endo (north). The population of the south conformation was larger for the purines than for the pyrimidines. The overall tumbling time of the molecule in 2H2O was determined from measurements of the cross relaxation rate constant for the H6-H5 vectors of the two cytosine residues. Order parameters were determined for the H1-H2, H2-H2 and H2-H3 vectors from measurements of cross relaxation rate constants, making use of multi-spin analysis of the NOE build up rates. These order parameters are weakly dependent of the base sequence, and except for the terminal Cyt 1 residue, the H2-H2 and H2-H3 vectors are near unity, indicating the absence of rapid pseudorotation on the nanosecond time scale. However, the order parameter for the H1-H2 vector is significantly smaller than expected for rapid pseudorotation indicating the presence of other motions of the sugars. This motion must be about an effective axis parallel to the H2-H vector, and to occur with an angular fluctuation of about 30°.The results show that to obtain highly refined structures for nucleic acids by NMR the effects of spin diffusion and motional averaging cannot be ignored.Some of this work was presented as a poster at the 30th Experimental NMR Conference at Asilomar, California 1989  相似文献

Summary the organization of the -globin genes was studied by restriction endonuclease mapping, in subjects carrying the variant Hb J Mexico. A subject homozygous for Hb J synthesized both Hb J (about 55%) and Hb A and had two loci per chromosome. His restriction site map was found to be identical to that obtained with a normal DNA, except for a mutant Bgl II site which was observed on the Hb J chromosome proximal to the 5-locus. We have also mapped the DNA of a compound heterozygote for Hb J and -thalassemia, who synthesizes 38% Hb J and we have found a single gene corresponding to a –3.7 haplotype on one chromosome and two genes, respectively J and A, on the other.  相似文献

Summary Crude protein extracts from single seeds of nondomesticated Mexican bean accessions were analysed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for variability in phaseolin protein. Six new phaseolin types; M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, which contained polypeptides within the same range of molecular weights (51,000 to 45,000 daltons) as occur in the S, T and C phaseolin types of cultivated beans were identified. No T and C types were found among the non-domesticated Mexican accessions, and the S type occurred in less than 7% of the seeds screened. Genetic analyses of F2 progenies from crosses between Sanilac (S), and five of the M types showed that each M phaseolin phenotype was allelic to the S type and expressed codominantly.  相似文献

As tested progeny have never been obtained, breeding studies on African yams (Dioscorea cayenensisrotundata) are scarce. We report here the first progenies checked by isoenzyme markers. This was made possible by the choice of well-known genitors [one male (cv Zrezrou) and three females (cvs Sopéré, Dahomey and C 20)] and special hybridization conditions. Six enzymatic systems [esterase (EST), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH), and phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI)] were used to check the progenies and detect outbreeding. Despite the small number of progeny, it was possible to provide information on the genetics of the isoenzymatic systems.  相似文献

Summary Twelve scented (basmati) and one non-scented variety were analysed for their amino acid composition. The essential amino acid profiles of scented varieties when compared with non-scented, revealed that these varieties exhibited higher values, which ranged from 2.82 to 4.86 gm/100 gm protein for lysine, 1.92 to 3.13 for methionine, 1.67 to 4.23 for tyrosine, 3.65 to 4.91 for phenylalanine, 5.50 to 8.95 for leucine, 2.25 to 3.40 for isoleucine, 2.84 to 3.46 for threonine, 3.36 to 5.33 for valine. When these values were compared to FAO recommended standards, it was observed that most of the scented varieties had comparable or superior values, while varieties such as, Type 3, Basmati sufaid 100, Likitimachi, Randhunipagalu and Basmati 370 showed superior lysine, phenylalanine, leucine, and methionine content. These observations suggest that the scented varieties posses better amino acid profiles and exhibit superior nutritional qualities, which could be utilised in breeding varieties with improved amino acid composition.  相似文献

Summary On t.l.c. plates 125I-cholera toxin binds to a disialoganglioside tentatively identified as GDlb with about 10 times less capacity than to ganglioside GM1. Binding of labeled toxin to both gangliosides was abolished in presence of excess amounts of unlabeled B subunit. Ganglioside extracts from human or pig intestinal mucosa showed toxin binding to gangliosides GM1 and GD1b. In a randomly collected series of 175 cases of pityriasis versicolor in residents of the central-northern part of Venezuela, 13% of the patients were infected with ovoid unicellular units of the causal fungus (Malassezia ovalis) and 87% with globous unicellular units in the scales (M. furfur). Only globous unicellular units (Pityrosporum orbiculare) were seen outside the active lesions and in these, after the successful treatment with ketoconazole. The median age of 40 ovalis patients was 37.5 years; the same in 40 furfur patients was 24.5 years. The median age at the moment of discovering the first lesions among ovalis patients was 31; among furfur patients this was 20 years. There were 16 male patients among the ovalis and 24 among the furfur groups of 40. The topographic distribution of the lesions varied according to the type of the invader. M. ovalis prevailed on the trunk below the waist-line and on the limbs, mainly on buttocks and upper legs. M. furfur prevailed on the chest, neck, face and upper limbs.The hypothesis is offered that the ovoid agent of pityriasis versicolor preferentially occupies the less sweating and sebum-producing parts of the body in older (and drier) persons than the globous type does.  相似文献

The action of cyclic adenosine-3,5-monophosphate (3,5-AMP) and of substances modifying the rate of its breakdown (inhibitors and activators of phosphodiesterase) on the olfactory epithelium was investigated in frogs. The slow electrical response of the olfactory epithelium to stimulation by solutions of various substances was recorded. Cyclic 3,5-AMP and its dibutyryl derivative were found to excite the olfactory receptors effectively. Responses to these substances developed after an appreciably longer delay than responses to stimulation by solutions of odiferous substances. It is postulated that the depolarizing action of 3,5-AMP and dibutyryl 3,5-AMP is manifested only after they have penetrated inside the receptor cell through its membrane. Both 5-AMP and cyclic 2,3-AMP were ineffective. In the next series of experiments the integral receptor potential was recorded in response to short stimulation by the vapor of an odiferous substance. The duration of this potential was increased after treatment of the olfactory epithelium with phosphodiesterase inhibitors: methylxanthines or papaverine. Conversely, the negative wave of the integral receptor potential was shortened under the influence of the phosphodiesterase activator imidazole. Cyclic 3,5-AMP is considered to play the role of mediator in the mechanism of excitation of the olfactory receptor; during interaction between an odiferous substance and the receptor, adenyl cyclase is activated and the concentration of 3,5-AMP increases; this, in turn, causes depolarization of the receptor cell membrane.Institute of Chemical Physics, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Oxidative injury and antioxidant responses were investigated in two banana genotypes (Musa AAA Berangan and Musa AA Mas) subjected to 40 % PEG-induced water stress. PEG treatment resulted in oxidative injury, as expressed in increased lipid peroxidation and reduced membrane stability index, in both cultivars; however, greater oxidative injury was detected in Mas. Under PEG treatment, catalase activity and glutathione reductase activity were enhanced in both cultivars, but were higher in Mas. Ascorbate peroxidase activity was enhanced in Berangan under water stress, but was unaffected in Mas. Meanwhile, superoxide dismutase activity was inhibited in both cultivars under water stress, but higher activity was detected in Berangan. Higher ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were associated with greater protection against water stress-induced oxidative injury.  相似文献

Clusters of di-, tri-, and tetra-antennary -D-mannopyranosides were synthesized in good yields based on the coupling of amine-bearing mono- or trisaccharide {Man (16)[Man (13)]Man} haptens to poly-isocyanate or -isothiocyanate tethering cores. The relative binding properties of the resulting multivalent ligands were determined by turbidimetric and solid phase enzyme-linked lectin assays (ELLA) using plant lectins (phytohemagglutinins) Concanavalin A (Con A) and Pisum sativum (pea lectin) having four and two carbohydrate binding sites, respectively. Rapid and efficient cross-linking between tetravalent Con A and mannopyranosylated clusters were measured by a microtiter plate version of turbidimetric analyses. In inhibition of binding of the lectins to yeast mannan, the best tetravalent monosaccharide (30) and trisaccharide (31) inhibitors were shown to be 140 and 1155 times more potent inhibitors than monomeric methyl -D-mannopyranoside against pea lectin and Con A, respectively. Compounds 30 and 31 were thus 35 and 289 fold more potent than the reference monosaccharide based on their hapten contents. As a general observation, the ligands bearing the Man (16)[Man (13)]Man trimannoside structures were found to be more potent inhibitors for Con A than the ligands having single mannoside residues, whereas pea lectin could not discriminate between the two types of ligands.  相似文献

Summary Near isogenic/substitution lines of stem rust resistance genes in different backgrounds of Marquis, Chinese Spring and W 2691 and certain varieties with known genes for stem rust resistance were tested against each of 19 Indian cultures of stem rust races/biotypes (14, 15, 17, 21, 21A-1, 24, 34, 40, 40A, 42, 42B, 117, 117A, 117A-1, 122, 184, 194, 222 and 295). Sr 24 (Sear's 3D/Ag), Sr 24 (TR 380-27 4/3 Ag 14-White seeded recombinant with Agent type resistance), Sr 25 (Sear's 7D/Ag), Sr 26 (Eagle), Sr 26 (Knott's 6A/Ag translocation), Sr 27 (WRT 238-5), Combination line (Sr Tt1 + Sr 9b) were observed to be completely effective against all the 19 cultures tested. In addition, a number of lines, such as TAF2d (Sr Agi), Line W(Sr Tt2) and Combination III (Sr Tt1 + Sr 9e), were found to be effective against at least three of the most prevalent races (21, 40A and 117A-1) and a virulent race 122 in Indian natural population. Lines carrying genes other than Sr 2, Sr 9a, Sr 9f (Chinese Spring) and Sr 15 (Norka), and Line E were found to be resistant to one or more cultures of stem rust.The background effect upon the expression of a gene was observed by comparing the range of infection on single gene host lines in either different backgrounds and/or in cultivars with known genes for stem rust resistance against the 12 cultures of stem rust races found in India.  相似文献

Summary Detailed restriction enzyme analysis of the DNA from a Chinese female showed that one of her chromosomes had a >17.5 kb deletion of DNA, including the , 2, and 1 globin genes, which is present in many Southeast Asians with an -thalassemia-1 chromosome. Her normal chromosome had the expected cluster of -like globin genes (5----2-1-3), but the segment of DNA between the two globin genes was elongated by some 0.5–0.7 kb. Analyses of various restriction sites suggested that this normal variant of the human globin gene complex is due to a crossover between a normal chromosome with () and a chromosome with an -thalassemia-2 (–3.7) and an -21-hybrid gene.  相似文献

Summary The timing mechanism underlying ultradian (2–3 h) activity patterns in the common vole, Microtus arvalis, was studied using behavioural deprivation experiments. These were aimed at distinguishing between a homeostatic control mechanism, in which the rhythmic behaviour itself is part of the causal loop, and a clock mechanism, independent of the behaviour.In 175 experiments, deprivation of food during 3 ultradian cycles in (subjective) daytime did not result in significant changes in the ultradian periodicity of attempts to obtain the food, compared with ad lib. access to food and water. A minor, but significant increase in ultradian activity time () occurred in the course of the deprivation, but this was compensated by a shorter ultradian rest (). These results were obtained both in intact animals (n = 24), which showed ultradian and circadian rhythmicity in behaviour, and in animals (n = 21) with electrolytic lesions aimed at the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), which lacked the circadian modulation of behaviour. Simultaneous deprivation of water and food in 8 voles without circadian rhythmicity during 40 experiments also did not lead to any change in the ultradian periodicity of feeding attempts.Rest deprivation was studied in 5 SCN lesioned voles, by forcing running wheel activity to continue following spontaneous running. Thus, the experimental activity bout was artificially lengthened to 2–9 h in 67 experiments. The onset of the subsequent rest episodes occurred independent of the duration of the preceding . The duration of was dependent on the preceding, experimental in a periodic fashion. The interval experimental (=lengthened +following ) was equal to one, two or three times the control (obtained on nonexperimental days). This result fits the prediction of a clock model and is in conflict with a monotonicincrease of with , as expected in a homeostatic, restorative process.It is concluded that the ultradian timing of activity in the common vole can be explained neither by homeostatic hunger or thirst mechanisms nor by homeostatic rest/activity regulation. Summary The inheritance of resistance to whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) was studied in 21 rice varieties. Reactions of F1; F2 and F3 progenies of the crosses of 21 resistant varieties with the susceptible variety TN 1 revealed that a single dominant gene governs resistance in Mushkan 41, Santhi, Siahnakidar 195, SM2-34, Tirisurkh 251, Zirijowaian 245, 18, 24A, 39, 76 S, 78, 180, 213 B, 267, 293, CI 6037-4, NP97, S39 JKW and Bansphul. In varieties 65 and 274 A, resistance is governed by one dominant and one recessive gene which segregate independently of each other. Tests for allelism with the Wbph 1 gene originally identified in N 22 revealed that the dominant gene present in all the test varieties is the same as Wbph 1. Further studies are required to determine the allelic relationships of the recessive gene found in varieties 65 and 274 A.  相似文献

This paper outlines a widely-held conception of illness, related to perceived changes in body temperature — Chills and Colds on one hand, Fevers on the other — in an English suburban community on the outskirts of London. The relationship between this folk model, and that of the local family physicians is analysed, to show how biomedical treatment and concepts, particularly the germ theory of disease, far from challenging the folk model, actually reinforce it. Remedies which cannot be scientifically and biomedically justified are nevertheless prescribed by the physicians to meet their patients' need to make sense of biomedical treatment in terms of their folk model of illness. At the interface between physician and patient, biomedical diagnoses and treatment are more negotiable than previously realised — and this has important implications for the delivery of health care.  相似文献

Summary The occurrence of the AT chain (i.e. A75 Ile Thr) in different populations was evaluated through a study of 4250 cord blood samples and blood samples from more than 350 SS1 patients. High frequencies were observed in Italy, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Holland, but also in Japan, Vietnam, and India. The chain is (nearly) absent in the Black population of Ghana and Kenya, and low frequencies were observed in China and Australian aborigines. Only a few adult SS patients (18 out of 357) were AT heterozygotes. The chromosomes with the AT globin gene were mapped through an evaluation of the presence of 10 different restriction sites. The AT chromosomes from different populations were closely related and had the same subhaplotypes of [--++-+] (Hinc II 5 to ; Xmn I 5 to G; Hind III in G and A; Hinc II in and 3 to ), quite different from the subhaplotypes seen for AT negative chromosomes.2 This suggests a common ancestor which may have originated in Southern Europe. An evaluation of the chain production by both chromosomes in SS patients and -thalassemia heterozygotes was possible for subjects with an AT heterozygosity. It was concluded that in -thalassemia trait, the chain synthesis is directed for about two-thirds by the thalassemic chromosome and for about onethird by the normal chromosome; the contribution by the normal chromosome decreases with a decrease in total chain production.This is contribution #0890 of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA 30912, USA  相似文献
