Newly hatched caterpillars of the specialist herbivorous species Ascia monuste (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) feed on egg chorion before ingesting plant material. They also ingest their exoskeletons and perform egg cannibalism in both the field and the laboratory. Females lay eggs on plants which already have conspecifics (eggs and/or caterpillars) leading to the observation of cannibalism in the field. Two favorable conditions are required for such an occurrence: (1) eggs laid close together on the same leaf, and (2) the finding by older caterpillars of eggs on the same plant. Oviposition preference experiments in cages showed that females do not avoid laying on plants with eggs. However, they do avoid laying eggs on plants predated by caterpillars. All instars perform cannibalism in the field and, in addition to this, the ingested eggs are healthy and cannibalism occurs in the presence of abundant food. The ingestion of eggs from their own clutch was more intense when the clutch was large. Contact with eggs is also important for cannibalism. Caterpillars ingested healthy eggs during three successive days. According to the results, it is possible to state that egg cannibalism in A. monuste is opportunistic, preferential and highly frequent and that there is a tolerance to a diet based on animal protein in this species. Since A. monuste obtains nutrients from both animal and vegetable resources, it is probably better to consider it as opportunistic omnivorous.  相似文献

Various aspects of the parasitims of caterpillars ofAscia monuste orseis byCotesia ayerzai, were studied in laboratory choice tests. Individual ♂♂ were found to be extremely variable in ovipositional duration, as well as in the number of eggs oviposited. To simulate parasitoid dispersal, or low host density, we isolated ♂♂ for 60 min following initial exposure and compared our tests with ♂♂ which had not been isolated. No differences in (1) the number of eggs oviposited per host instar; (2) the conditional probability of host encounter; (3) host acceptance; and (4) the conditional probability of instar specific parasitism were found between these groups. Held ♂♂ did, however, reject hosts after ovipositor insertions in a higher proportion.   相似文献

In addition to damaging trees, the eastern tent caterpillar is implicated in early fetal loss and late‐term abortion in horses. In a field study, we evaluated the potential biological control of the caterpillar using eastern tent caterpillar nuclear polyhedrosis virus (ETNPV), a naturally occurring virus that is nearly species‐specific. Egg masses were hatched and second instar larvae were fed virus‐inoculated foliage to propagate the virus in vivo. Then, a viral pesticide was formulated at concentrations of 104, 106 and 108 polyhedral inclusion bodies per ml. The pesticide was applied to foliage on which second, third and fourth instar caterpillars were feeding. When the majority of surviving larvae reached the sixth instar, colonies were collected and the surviving caterpillars counted. Mean numbers of surviving caterpillars per treatment were compared via 95% bootstrap confidence intervals. The data indicate second instar caterpillars were highly susceptible to the virus, but only at the highest concentration tested. Third instar caterpillars were also somewhat susceptible to high virus concentrations, while fourth instar caterpillars were fairly resistant. Our data provide the strongest evidence to date that ETNPV can be propagated, harvested and refined for formulation as a biological control agent for eastern tent caterpillar. Its use on this insect may be merited in circumstances where landowners and managers need to protect trees and horses.  相似文献

1. Although in recent years there have been a number of studies demonstrating trophic cascades in terrestrial systems, it is still unclear what environmental conditions enable or enhance such cascades, especially among four trophic levels. 2. In this study, the influence of environmental stress (increased soil pore water salinity) on a four trophic level study system in a Florida salt marsh was examined by experimentally increasing soil pore water salinity. Effects of increased salinity on the quality of the host plant, Batis maritima, were assessed, as were resulting effects on the lepidopteran herbivore Ascia monuste, and the primary parasitoids and hyperparasitoids of its caterpillars. 3. Increased salinity altered host‐plant quality, which subsequently affected the consumer species. These effects of altered plant quality cascaded up through the herbivore and primary parasitoid to the hyperparasitoid Hypopteromalus inimicus, influencing its density, sex ratio, body size, and initial egg load. 4. These results demonstrate how heterogeneity in environmental stress can result in effects that cascade up through four trophic levels. We suggest that such strong effects at higher trophic levels may be more likely in systems in which relationships are more specific and intimate such as those among hosts, parasitoids, and hyperparasitoids.  相似文献

The butterfly Ascia monuste L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) is a specialist pest of brassica crops in neotropical regions where it significantly impacts crop production. Understanding the actual and potential distribution of the pest and its hosts in current and future climates may help government agencies to mitigate and manage potential incursions. Here, we use MaxEnt algorithm to model the current distribution of both A. monuste and its host, Brassica oleracea var. capitata L. (cabbage) and then model the likely impact of projected climate change (RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios) on their potential future distributions. While A. monuste is currently restricted to the American continent, we show that under current conditions the potential distribution of both the butterfly and cabbage includes areas of Africa, Asia, Oceania and Europe to some extent. The annual temperature range and mean annual temperature were the strongest predictors of the distribution of both species. Under a projected climate change scenario, suitable areas in the tropical climate zone are expected to decrease for both species. However, in temperate regions, the suitable area for cabbage is expected to increase but will remain unsuitable for the pest. Our results highlight the need for strategies to prevent the introduction of A. monuste to other areas of the tropical climate zone and for the development of management practices in the neotropical region.  相似文献

The prey-handling behaviour of two species of Asian ratsnakes was studied in the laboratory. In experiment 1, effects of prey size and type (mouse, lizard and frog) on capture position, direction of ingestion, condition of prey at ingestion, and prey-handling method were investigated using newly hatched Elaphe quadrivirgata. Prey size did not affect these variables except prey-handling method in frog trials: large frogs were more frequently constricted after a delay of more than 1 s than small frogs, and small frogs were usually simply seized. On the other hand, prey type affected prey-handling method: mice and lizards were more frequently constricted or pinioned than frogs. When hatchlings of E. quadrivirgata tried to coil around a prey animal immediately after striking, they frequently failed or released their coils within 10 s after striking. In experiment 2, prey-handling behaviour of adult E. climacophora was examined with mice of various sizes. Adult E. climacophora tended to constrict large mice immediately after striking, whereas they simply seized small mice. Only one out of 38 mice which were constricted immediately after striking was released from the coils within the subsequent 10 s. Large mice were killed prior to ingestion, whereas small mice were swallowed alive. Large mice tended to be swallowed head first. Experiment 3 was conducted to investigate effects of mouse size on prey-handling behaviour of newly hatched E. climacophora. Mouse size affected condition of prey at ingestion and prey-handling method but not capture position and direction of ingestion. Possible relationships between feeding ecology and the differences of prey-handling behaviour among Elaphe are discussed.  相似文献

Caterpillars of the parasitic lycaenid butterfly are often adopted by host ants. It has been proposed that this adoption occurs because the caterpillars mimic the cuticular hydrocarbons of the host ant. This study aimed to examine whether caterpillars of the Japanese lycaenid butterfly Niphanda fusca induce adoption by mimicking their host ant Camponotus japonicus. Behavioral observations conducted in the laboratory showed that most second‐instar caterpillars were not adopted, whereas most third‐instar caterpillars were successfully adopted by host workers. A chemical comparison detected no characteristic differences in the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles between second‐ and third‐instar caterpillars. However, morphological features of the caterpillars differed between the second and third instars; third‐instar caterpillars developed exocrine glands (ant organs) such as tentacle organs and a dorsal nectary organ. These results suggest that multiple chemical signatures, not only cuticular hydrocarbons, may be important for invasion of the host ant nest.  相似文献

The predation capacity and prey preference of larvae of Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) on eggs or larvae of Pieris brassicae (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) in the absence and presence of cabbage aphids as an alternative prey were evaluated in laboratory experiments at 25°C. Both instars preyed upon butterfly eggs and larvae as well as on cabbage aphids with the third instar being the most voracious. The lacewings had a strong preference for caterpillars to butterfly eggs. In the presence of the aphids the predation on P. brassicae eggs or larvae was either completely abandoned or reduced by about 70%, respectively, by second instar lacewings and either reduced by about 80% or maintained, respectively, by third instar lacewings. Both instars thus had a clear preference for aphids compared to eggs of P. brassicae. However, second instar lacewings preferred aphids to caterpillars whereas the opposite was the case for third instar lacewings. The results indicate that 3rd instar C. carnea has a potential as biocontrol agent against P. brassicae.  相似文献

Previous study showed that diapause in Bombyx mori eggs can be terminated by dechorionation and that activation in the mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK)/extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK) in dechorionated cultured eggs is involved in diapause termination. In the present study, the possible mechanism underlying activation of ERK upon dechorionation was further investigated. Results showed that mechanical injury of diapause eggs without medium incubation also resulted in rapid increase in the phospho‐ERK levels and that injury increased the phospho‐ERK levels at different stages of both diapause eggs and eggs in which diapause initiation was prevented by HCl. Effects of anaerobiosis on dechorionation‐stimulated phospho‐ERK levels showed that the mechanical injury itself but not the dramatic increase in oxygen uptake upon injury is involved in a rapid activation of ERK. Chemical anaerobiosis on dechorionation‐stimulated phospho‐ERK levels and the in vivo effect of anaerobiosis showed that the supply of oxygen also plays a role in ERK signaling. In addition, injury induced the phosphorylation of c‐jun N‐terminal kinases (JNKs) and p38 kinase, components of two parallel MAPK pathways. A kinase assay showed a dramatic increase in JNK kinase activity in egg lysates upon injury. When newly hatched first instar larvae were injured, an increase in the phospho‐ERK levels similar to that in dechorionated eggs was observed. From the results, we hypothesize that the injury‐induced rapid activation of MAPK signaling, which serves as a natural signal for embryonic development, is related to diapause termination in dechorionated eggs.  相似文献

The temporal stability of trace element concentrations in fertilized, artificially incubated anadromous brown trout Salmo trutta eggs and newly hatched fry was investigated. The anadromous status of the parental fish was confirmed using strontium isotopic analysis of otoliths. Whilst manganese concentrations in eggs varied over time, concentrations of aluminium, potassium, magnesium, strontium, barium and calcium were all unchanged 1 week and 6 weeks post‐fertilization as well as in recently hatched larvae. The results clearly suggest that the distinctive trace element signature present in the eggs and newly hatched larvae of anadromous S. trutta (typically characterized by high strontium, low barium) is stable over time. Therefore analysis of the trace element composition of eggs is concluded to be a cost‐effective and reliable method for determining the spatial and temporal extent of upstream spawning migration by anadromous salmonids. The temporal variability of at least one element in this study suggests the stability of untested multi‐element signatures cannot automatically be assumed.  相似文献

1. Manipulative field studies were carried out to evaluate the foliage age preference–performance relationship for an extreme generalist herbivore, the whitemarked tussock moth (Orygia leucostigma Smith) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), within balsam fir [Abies balsamea (L.) Mill]. 2. Field surveys indicated that early instar caterpillars fed almost exclusively on young (i.e. current‐year) foliage, whereas late instars caterpillars fed on both young and mature (i.e. 1‐ and 2‐year‐old) foliage. 3. Survival of early instar caterpillars was highest in treatments where current‐year and/or 1‐year old foliage were available, but decreased significantly on older foliage. In contrast, late instar caterpillars had the highest survival when allowed to feed on all age classes of foliage, whereas potential fecundity was highest for late instars that fed on young foliage. 4. Overall, caterpillars had 32–65% higher fitness when able to feed on all rather than just one age class of foliage. 5. These results support both the ‘complementary diet' hypothesis, which states that dietary mixing of different‐aged foliage can increase nutrient uptake and/or dilute harmful secondary plant chemicals, and the ‘ontogeny’ hypothesis, which attributes changes in diet to changes in the nutritional needs and/or tolerance to plant defences of juvenile insects as they develop.  相似文献

This paper examines the life history of a generation of galls created by the aphid Quadrartus yoshinomiyai (Hormaphidinae: Nipponaphidini) on its primary host plant, Distylium racemosum. First‐instar fundatrix nymphs of Q. yoshinomiyai initiated galls on stems of developing shoots in early April and incipient enclosed galls were found from later the same month. The galls lasted for up to 14 months, during which they grew to maturity, opened in early or mid‐April of the following year and dried up by the end of June. First‐instar fundatrix nymphs were found on winter buds, indicating that they hatched from eggs in autumn and overwintered as nymphs. These results suggest that Q. yoshinomiyai has a three‐year life cycle.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The behaviour of the parasite Muscidifurax raptor Girault and Sanders was studied when searching for hosts, puparia of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). At low density females tend to avoid encountering parasitized hosts. This tendency decreases as density of searching females increases. 2. The proportional avoidance of superparasitism was calculated and the effect of increasing number of encounters per host on this parameter was analysed. 3. The mechanisms of solitariness were studied. These mechanisms include: outer marking of the hosts by the female parasite and deliberate physical attack of the newly hatched larvae to eliminate as yet unhatched eggs. 4. Aleochara bilineata oviposits in soil microhabitats likely to contain the dipteran pupae that are hosts of its ectoparasitoid first instar larvae. The eggs of A. bilineata have a rigid chorion but they are nonetheless hydropic and, after 30 h of development, start to increase in volume and do so until 50 h. This increase in volume is due to absorption of water. The eggs increase their initial volume by a factor of 1.68 that corresponds to an increase of 44.44% of initial weight. To explain this augmentation in volume, we describe the modifications occurring in the egg chorion during hydropy. The increase in volume in such a rigid egg is made possible through the fragmentation of the chorion which, initially dense and regular, becomes fragmented. Such adaptation enables female A. bilineata to oviposit hydropic eggs in habitats where mechanical resistance is needed. Accepted: 29 October 2000  相似文献

The Asian long-horned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennies (Motschulsky), is a destructive wood-boring pest that is capable of killing healthy trees. Gut bacteria in the larvae of the wood-boring pest is essential for the fitness of hosts. However, little is known about the structure of the intestinal microbiome of A. glabripennies during larval development. Here, we used Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze the larval intestinal bacterial communities of A. glabripennies at the stages of newly hatched larvae, 1st instar larvae and 4th instar larvae. Significant differences were found in larval gut microbial community structure at different larvae developmental stages. Different dominant genus was detected during larval development. Acinetobacter were dominant in the newly hatched larvae, Enterobacter and Raoultella in the 1st instar larvae, and Enterococcus and Gibbsiella in the 4th instar larvae. The microbial richness in the newly hatched larvae was higher than those in the 1st and 4th instar larvae. Many important functions of the intestinal microbiome were predicted, for example, fermentation and chemoheterotrophy functions that may play an important role in insect growth and development was detected in the bacteria at all tested stages. However, some specific functions are found to be associated with different development stages. Our study provides a theoretical basis for investigating the function of the intestinal symbiosis bacteria of A. glabripennies.  相似文献

A strain ofFusarium solani sensu Snyder & Hansen invaded the eggs of the insectPanstrongylus geniculatus in a vivarium. None of the invaded eggs hatched. To establish experimentally the pathogenicity of thisFusarium species against the eggs ofP. geniculatus, the fungus and the eggs were incubated together under different relative humidities and temperatures. At 64% relative humidity and 26 °C, the fungus grew well colonizing and penetrating all of the chorions.Three embryos died and were also colonized byF. solani. Only 4 nymphs hatched and survived to day 20. It is concluded that the isolate ofF. solani was capable of colonizing and invading the chorion of the eggs under certain humidity and temperature conditions and cause the death of the embryos.  相似文献

Therefore, a close relationship is predicted between the size of the host at parasitism and the size of the emerging adult wasp. This relationship is less clear for koinobiont than for idiobiont parasitoids.
  • 2 As size differentiation in host species exhibiting sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is likely to occur already during larval development, in koinobiont larval endoparasitoids the size of the emerging adult may also be constrained based on the sex of the host caterpillar.
  • 3 Sex‐specific growth trajectories were compared in unparasitised Plutella xylostella caterpillars and in second and fourth instar hosts that were parasitised by the solitary larval koinobiont endoparasitoid Diadegma semiclausum. Both species exhibit SSD, where females are significantly larger than males.
  • 4 Healthy female P. xylostella caterpillars developed significantly faster than their male conspecifics. Host regulation induced by D. semiclausum parasitism depended on the instar attacked. Parasitism in second‐instar caterpillars reduced growth compared to healthy unparasitised caterpillars, whereas parasitism in fourth‐instar caterpillars arrested development. The reduction in growth was most pronounced in hosts producing male D. semiclausum.
  • 5 Parasitism itself had the largest impact on host growth. SSD in the parasitoid is mainly the result of differences in growth rate of the parasitoid–host complex producing male and female wasps and differences in exploitation of the host resources. Female wasps converted host biomass more efficiently into adult biomass than males.

Irradiation at a minimum absorbed dose of 250 Grays (Gy) has been approved by the USDA as a quarantine treatment for certain fruits in Hawaii to control four species of tephritid fruit flies. Subsequent research must determine whether this dose is sufficient to control other quarantine pests, such as mealybugs, thrips, mites, beetles, moths, and scale insects, on other commodities with export potential that are approved for irradiation treatment for fruit flies. This study demonstrated that irradiation at 250 Gy caused non‐emergence of eggs and pupae, failure of larval development, and sterility of adults of yellow flower thrips, Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom). Adults were the most resistant stage tested, with 100% mortality at 57, 36 and 30 days post‐treatment for the 250, 350 and 400 Gy treatments, respectively. Untreated adults survived up to 66 days. After receiving an irradiation dose of 250 Gy, no one‐ to two‐day old eggs hatched successfully, while 3–4‐day old eggs hatched but did not develop beyond the larval stage. Of the controls, 96.0% of 1–2‐day old eggs and 75.9% of the 3–4‐day old eggs hatched and survived through pupation. No first or second instar larvae treated with a target dose of 250 Gy were able to pupate. When pupae were irradiated at 250 Gy, 37% emerged as adults and all were sterile compared to 88.3% emergence of controls.  相似文献

Bioassays were conducted to determine the susceptibility of egg masses of Mamestra brassicae and Spodoptera littoralis to different spore doses of Paecilomyces fumoso-roseus and Nomuraea rileyi at 20° and 25°C. P. fumoso-roseus was highly virulent against eggs, whereas N. rileyi provoked only a deferred mortality of larvae hatched from treated eggs. Nevertheless, larval mortality of S. littoralis caused by N. rileyi at 25°C was more effective after first-instar larval contamination than after egg mass treatment. The duration of the egg stage could explain differences of susceptibility between the two noctuids at 25°C. Scanning electron microscopical observations suggested two ways of contamination of newly hatched larvae. First, fungal germinations on the chorion surface suggested that newly hatched larvae might be infected by penetration of the egg integument before hatching. Second, conidia on the egg cuticle could be an entomopathogenic inoculum for newly emerging larvae which fed upon chorions. Results showed that pathogenicity of Hyphomycetes to noctuid eggs might be a promising area of investigation for biological control.  相似文献
