Movements of resident brown trout (age 2+ to 9+ years) and young Atlantic salmon (age 1+), stocked as fry, were studied in July, August and September in a coastal stream in northern Norway. Between 85 and 89% of the brown trout were recaptured in the study area (346m, 1326m2) within 45m of their release point throughout the investigation period. Most specimens had moved less than 150m. Trout movements were related to local variation in density. Trout occupying those sections of stream with the lowest fish densities (5.3–10.9 fish 100m?2) had a significantly lower movement rate than fish from sections with densities between 13.7 and 31.5 fish 100m?2. Trout that moved from their marking section were significantly larger than specimens that did not leave their original site. There was a significant correlation between permanence of station each month and the mean water level that month. The majority of the trout (47%) were caught at undercut stream banks or at sites in the proximity of these. A decrease in water level during the study period resulted in a high loss (36%) of such habitat, probably forcing some individuals to move. The recapture data indicate that the trout population consists of one small (c. 15–20%) mobile, and one large sedentary component. Young salmon displayed high station permanence in July and August (93% and 96%). However, in the autumn they exhibited a significant downstream movement, and only 73% were recaptured within their release section. This movement was significantly higher for larger specimens, and is thought to occur because of a pre-winter change in habitat, initiated by a decline in stream temperature. In contrast to trout, salmon in sections containing the lowest densities (22.0–25.0 fish 100m?2) did not show significantly lower movement rates when compared with salmon at higher densities (32.2–46.3 and 51.8–60.6 fish 100m?2). The spatial distribution of young salmon indicated the formation of territorial mosaics over the stream bed, which are thought to reduce intraspecific competition.  相似文献

Populations of brown trout Salmo trutta were monitored at a number of sites within a single stream, using an individual marking technique and recapturing uniquely marked fish repeatedly over a period of 12 months. Individual 1 + and 2 + resident brown trout in the Glenfinish River were found to consist of stationary and mobile component populations. The latter population consisted of a number of individuals observed moving mostly in an upstream direction, within a range of 0.03–2.24 km. On a large spatial scale, individuals in the stationary component population exhibited some degree of home site fidelity within the stream, over a period of 3–4 months, after which the fish tended to move from the site. Within sites, fidelity to either riffle or pool habitats, mostly the latter, was apparent in a proportion of the population. On a smaller scale, fidelity to the exact position with respect to boulders in the stream was also evident in a number of individuals. Home range size was calculated amongst these individuals, with ranges of up to 20 m recorded.  相似文献

The fish populations of an industrial river in South Wales   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The River Sirhowy, a trout river of the Ebbw System in south-east Wales still subject to sporadically high levels of suspended solids derived from the coal mining industry, was investigated over a three year period to assess its importance in the recolonization of a fishless river, the Ebbw Fawr, which is expected to recover from the effects of steelworks effluents discharged near its headwaters. Eight species of fish were recorded. Spawning areas for brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) were limited by industrial and urban developments and the discharge of suspended solids. Small numbers of native trout were produced in the system and the growth of these fish was poor in the main river, confirming the need for regular stocking. Movements of stocked trout were limited except in the lower reaches of the river where the presence of a native population, high levels of suspended solids and flash floods may have increased the numbers of fish moving into the recovering Ebbw Fawr.  相似文献

An experiment to induce anadromy in a population of wild brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis , was conducted near Sept-Iles, Quebec, in 1978–1979. Brook trout were captured from the Matamek River, tagged and transported to the Matamek River estuary during late spring and early summer, and allowed free movement between an impassable waterfall 0.7 km upstream and the sea. Fish were recaptured in autumn as they returned to fresh water. Over two years, 34.0% of the released fish were recaptured. Best returns were in the 2+ and 3+ age classes with 38.0 and 62.1% recaptured, respectively. Straying of transplanted fish appeared to be <1%. All age classes included sea run brook trout (sea trout) but the largest percentages of sea trout occurred in older fish. Growth was better in sea trout than in fish which did not develop anadromy, presumably a function of an increased food supply at sea. Severe tagging effects stunted growth and probably suppressed anadromy, especially among younger fish. Sexual characteristics of recaptured fish indicated suppressed maturation of gonads in sea trout compared to fish remaining in fresh water and there was a shift to a larger percentage of females in the sea trout. Comparisons between our results and data on other anadromous Salvelinus species underscore the potential for sea-ranching of trout and char as a moderate effort, high yield aquaculture technique.  相似文献

The population density, age structure, biomass, growth and production of brown trout were investigated in four tributaries of the upper River Wye. The populations at each site were largely maintained by immigration from nursery areas. Abundance of separate year classes at sites on the three largest tributaries reached a peak at age 2+. On the smallest stream numbers reached a peak at 1+. Recruitment occurred throughout the year but decreased with age of year classes. Maximum O+ densities ranged from 0.04 to 0.89 m−2, and >0+ densities from 0.13 to 0.59 m−2. Average total biomass in 1975 ranged from 2.6 to 14.2 g m−2. Within the study sites annual trout production in 1975 ranged from 2.9–19.7 g m−2. Production values were dependent on age structure and population mobility at the study sites. In the three largest streams 2+ and 3+ fish contributed 66.3–88.3% of total production whilst 1+ and 2+ fish contributed 74.5–84.5 % of the total in the smallest stream. The mobile (non-resident) component of the population accounted for up to 60–70% of production at certain times of the year, but over the year (1976) accounted for =30 % of total production. The resident component of the highest annual production value (19.7 g m−2) was estimated to be between 15.0 and 18.2 g m−2.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The sizes of home ranges of juvenile Atlantic salmon (age 1 +) and brown trout (age 2+ to 9+) in a Norwegian coastal stream were estimated by local movements of batch-marked fish from 12.5 and 25 m long sections. Only recoveries made in the release section and in up-and downstream neighbouring sections were considered.
2. There was no significant difference in the average percentage of recaptures of salmon and trout between 12.5 and 25 m sections; a stream area of about 40–50 m2 defines the size of home range for stocks of both species.
3. The fraction of brown trout recaptured in release sections increased with increasing fish densities, indicating a smaller home range under these conditions.  相似文献

Prey intake by Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta was measured across different riparian vegetation types: grassland, open canopy deciduous and closed canopy deciduous, in upland streams in County Mayo, Western Ireland. Fishes were collected by electrofishing while invertebrates were sampled from the benthos using a Surber sampler and drifting invertebrates collected in drift traps. Aquatic invertebrates dominated prey numbers in the diets of 0+ year Atlantic salmon and brown trout and 1+ year Atlantic salmon, whereas terrestrial invertebrates were of greater importance for diets of 1+ and 2+ year brown trout. Terrestrial prey biomass was generally greater than aquatic prey for 1+ and 2+ year brown trout across seasons and riparian types. Prey intake was greatest in spring and summer and least in autumn apart from 2+ year brown trout that sustained feeding into autumn. Total prey numbers captured tended to be greater for all age classes in streams with deciduous riparian canopy. Atlantic salmon consumed more aquatic prey and brown trout more terrestrial prey with an ontogenetic increase in prey species richness and diversity. Atlantic salmon and brown trout diets were most similar in summer. Terrestrial invertebrates provided an important energy subsidy particularly for brown trout. In grassland streams, each fish age class was strongly associated with aquatic, mainly benthic invertebrates. In streams with deciduous riparian canopy cover, diet composition partitioned between conspecifics with older brown trout associated with surface drifting terrestrial invertebrates and older Atlantic salmon associated with aquatic invertebrates with a high drift propensity in the water column and 0+ year fish feeding on benthic aquatic invertebrates. Deciduous riparian canopy cover may therefore facilitate vertical partitioning of feeding position within the water column between sympatric Atlantic salmon and brown trout. Implications for riparian management are discussed.  相似文献

(1) A survey of the macro-invertebrates and fish in the River Cynon, a trout stream in south-east Wales receiving industrial and domestic wastes, and nine of its tributaries, was carried out in the summer of 1970. Its principal purpose was to describe the structure of these communities before waste treatment facilities, in course of construction, reduce the degree of pollution. (2) The macro-invertebrate communities changed dramatically at station C4, there being a very varied fauna upstream and one dominated by chironomids and oligochaetes downstream, principally Nais barbata., Cricotopus bicinctus and Syncricotopus rufiventris. It seems likely that coal particles, influencing the substrate, are largely responsible for this change. Further downstream, and below substantial organic discharges, tubificids and the enchytraeid, Lumbricillus rivalis, became increasingly abundant. The total density of macro-invertebrates increased from about 2000/m2 in the headwaters to over 20,000/m2 in the lower reaches. (3) The fauna of the clean tributaries, Hir (C16) and Wenallt (C19) was similar to that ofthe unpolluted upper reaches ofthe Cynon (C1-C3) whereas that of tributaries affected by coal particles was similar to the fauna of the Cynon downstream of C4. (4) Six species of fish were recorded (bullhead, eel, minnow, trout, stickleback and stoneloach) of which tbree (bullhead, eel and trout) were confined to reaches upstream (C8 and above) of industrial eflluents at Abercwmboi. For 0–8 km downstream of these effluents the river was fishless and further downstream, to the confluence with the River Taff, fish density and biomass were reduced. (5) In the upper Cynon and its tributaries the density and biomass of trout were within the range recorded elsewhere in the British Isles. The growth rate of trout in the catchment is low. Diflerences in growth rate and shape of trout in the main river and tributaries suggest that there is little interchange between these areas, except perhaps with very young fish. 0 + * * The convention of referring to fish in their first year as 0+, in their second year as 1 + and so on is adopted here.
fish were only caught in abundance at two tributary stations and their numbers, even if widely distributed, could not permanently support the current density of older fish throughout the upper catchment. (6) Stone loach and minnow reached a very large size and individuals caught of the latter species approached the maximum recorded length for the British Isles.  相似文献

Wild and hatchery-reared 8–12-month-old (5–8 cm) trout, Salmo truttu L., were stocked into tributaries of the River Gudená. Movements were examined by means of electrofishing. Overall dispersal and upstream movement were greater for wild trout than for domestic trout. Maximum distance of movement was 600 m upstream for both strains and 600 m downstream for wild trout, and 700 m for domestic trout. Upstream movement started within 2 months from stocking and continued for at least 4 months. Downstream movement during the first few days after stocking, was more pronounced for domestic trout than for wild trout.  相似文献

A protective limestone treatment was applied to an acid-sensitive lake in northeastern Minnesota as part of the Acid Precipitation Mitigation Program. This 6–year study evaluated the impact of that treatment on lakes in the upper Midwest that experience episodes of acid stress but have not lost basic species integrity and community structure. Several changes in the fish community can be directly or indirectly attributed to the addition of 4.6 tonnes of calcium carbonate early in the third year of the study. An almost 30–fold increase in the population of Pimephales promelas(fathead minnow) a year after liming, based on mark-recapture estimates from trap netting and snorkeling, was attributed to a pH increase and a three-fold increase in the calcium concentration of the epilimnion. After the initial increase, the abundance of fathead minnows declined in subsequent years, as did the elevated pH and calcium concentrations. The Salvelimis fontinalis(brook trout) population also increased in the lake following application of limestone, but this was due in part to closing the lake to fishing. An increase in survival of stocked brook trout to age 1+ and an increase in growth of older brook trout after liming were attributed to the increased forage that the fathead minnows provided. Fathead minnows may have also reduced predation pressure on young brook trout by older brook trout. This study demonstrated that liming of a slightly acidic lake did not adversely affect the integrity of the fish community, and in fact may have increased the abundance and biomass of the forage fish community and indirectly increased the survival, abundance, and growth of brook trout.  相似文献

Brown trout and food web interactions in a Minnesota stream   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. We examined indirect, community‐level interactions in a stream that contained non‐native brown trout (Salmo trutta Linnaeus), native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill) and native slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus Richardson). Our objectives were to examine benthic invertebrate composition and prey selection of fishes (measured by total invertebrate dry mass, dry mass of individual invertebrate taxa and relative proportion of invertebrate taxa in the benthos and diet) among treatments (no fish, juvenile brook trout alone, juvenile brown trout alone, sculpin with brook trout and sculpin with brown trout). 2. We assigned treatments to 1 m2 enclosures/exclosures placed in riffles in Valley Creek, Minnesota, and conducted six experimental trials. We used three designs of fish densities (addition of trout to a constant number of sculpin with unequal numbers of trout and sculpin; addition of trout to a constant number of sculpin with equal numbers of trout and sculpin; and replacement of half the sculpin with an equal number of trout) to investigate the relative strength of interspecific versus intraspecific interactions. 3. Presence of fish (all three species, alone or in combined‐species treatments) was not associated with changes in total dry mass of benthic invertebrates or shifts in relative abundance of benthic invertebrate taxa, regardless of fish density design. 4. Brook trout and sculpin diets did not change when each species was alone compared with treatments of both species together. Likewise, we did not find evidence for shifts in brown trout or sculpin diets when each species was alone or together. 5. We suggest that native brook trout and non‐native brown trout fill similar niches in Valley Creek. We did not find evidence that either species had an effect on stream communities, potentially due to high invertebrate productivity in Valley Creek.  相似文献

Diel changes in the stomach contents of 0+, 1 + and 2+ or older trout were compared with diel changes in invertebrate drift. Peaks in mean numbers and biomass of invertebrates per fish stomach occurred in the midday (10.00 to 14.00 h) and evening (18.00 to 22.00 h) samples. The major peak was usually in the evening sample, but the major peak in biomass was in the midday sample for 2+ fish. There was a good correlation between diel changes of benthic invertebrates in the diet and drift, with the major peak in the evening. A similar relationship did not always exist for emerging and terrestrial invertebrates. Known non-drifting benthic invertebrates (e.g. large caddis larvae) were excluded from the comparisons, and were only taken by 2+ or older trout in which they contributed a large biomass to the day food.  相似文献

Movement by the larger more mobile species of coral reef fish plays a significant role in determining patterns in abundance and population structure. Fish movement is also relevant to the use and effectiveness of marine reserves in managing fish populations. Coral trout are large piscivorous serranids supporting major fisheries on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). This study reports on the within-reef movement of the common coral trout, Plectropomus leopardus, at Heron Reef, southern GBR, over a twelve month period, investigated by tagging and underwater tracking. Tracking of coral trout revealed no apparent relationship between the area moved and stage of tide or time of day. However, movement areas were affected by the size of fish: in spring a linear relationship between fish size and area of movement was measured, but in summer the largest (male) fish moved over significantly smaller areas than medium-sized fish. Movement of males may be related to cleaning behaviour and spawning. Fifty nine percent (n=101) of the tagged fish were resighted over periods of 4–5 months, in “home sites” measuring ∼2000 m2. Coral trout were not restricted to home sites, but moved on average 2 km along the reef slope; maximum distances of 7–7.5 km were measured. Coral trout appear to range as mobile, opportunistic predators, but also maintain home sites for access to shelter and cleaning stations. Accepted: 1 August 1996  相似文献

Movements of prey organisms across ecosystem boundaries often subsidize consumer populations in adjacent habitats. Human disturbances such as habitat degradation or non-native species invasions may alter the characteristics or fate of these prey subsidies, but few studies have measured the direct effects of this disruption on the growth and local abundance of predators in recipient habitats. Here we present evidence, obtained from a combined experimental and comparative study in northern Japan, that an invading stream fish usurped the flux of allochthonous prey to a native fish, consequently altering the diet and reducing the growth and abundance of the native species. A large-scale field experiment showed that excluding terrestrial invertebrates that fell into the stream with a mesh greenhouse reduced terrestrial prey in diets of native Dolly Varden charr (Salvelinus malma) by 46–70%, and reduced their growth by 25% over six weeks. However, when nonnative rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were introduced, they monopolized these prey and caused an even greater reduction of terrestrial prey in charr diets of 82–93%, and reduced charr growth by 31% over the same period. Adding both greenhouse and rainbow trout treatments together produced similar results to adding either alone. Results from a comparative field study of six other stream sites in the region corroborated the experimental findings, showing that at invaded sites rainbow trout usurped the terrestrial prey subsidy, causing a more than 75% decrease in the biomass of terrestrial invertebrates in Dolly Varden diets and forcing them to shift their foraging to insects on the stream bottom. Moreover, at sites with even low densities of rainbow trout, biomass of Dolly Varden was more than 75% lower than at sites without rainbow trout. Disruption of resource fluxes between habitats may be a common, but unidentified, consequence of invasions, and an additional mechanism contributing to the loss of native species Electronic supplementary material The online version of this article (doi:) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.  相似文献

Hybridization with introduced species represents a serious threat to the persistence of many native fish populations. Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) have been introduced extensively throughout the native range of bull trout (S. confluentus) and hybridization has been documented in several systems where they co-exist and is seen as a significant threat to the persistence of bull trout populations. We identified a group of diagnostic microsatellite loci to differentiate bull trout and brook trout and then used these loci to examine the spatial distribution of hybrids in the Malheur River basin, Oregon USA. In random samples of approximately 100 fish from each of three creeks we identified 181 brook trout, 112 bull trout and 14 hybrids. Although bull trout, brook trout and hybrids were found in all three creeks, they were not evenly distributed; brook trout were primarily found in the lower sections of the creeks, bull trout further upstream, and hybrids in the areas of the greatest overlap. One creek with a population of brook trout in a headwater lake provided an exception to this pattern; brook trout were found distributed throughout the creek downstream of the lake. Several post-F1 hybrids were identified suggesting that hybrids are reproducing in the Malher River Basin. Mitochondrial DNA analysis indicated that both female bull trout and brook trout are involved in hybridization events. Analysis of population structure suggested that brook trout have established multiple spawning populations within the Malheur system. Data presented in this study suggest that relative abundance of brook trout and habitat quality are important factors to consider when evaluating the threat of hybridization to bull trout populations.  相似文献

Epizootic haematopoietic necrosis virus (EHNV) is an iridovirus confined to Australia and is known only from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and redfin perch Perca fluviatilis. Outbreaks of disease caused by EHNV in trout populations have invariably been of low severity, affecting only 0+ post-hatchery phase fingerlings < 125 mm in length. To date the virus has been demonstrated in very few live in-contact fish, and anti-EHNV antibodies have not been found in survivors of outbreaks, suggesting low infectivity but high case fatality rates in trout. During an on-going study on an endemically infected farm (Farm A) in the Murrumbidgee River catchment of southeastern New South Wales, EHNV infection was demonstrated in 4 to 6 wk old trout fingerlings in the hatchery as well as in 1+ to 2+ grower fish. During a separate investigation of mortalities in 1+ to 2+ trout on Farm B in the Shoalhaven River catchment in southeastern New South Wales, EHNV infection was demonstrated in both fingerlings and adult fish in association with nocardiosis. A 0.7% prevalence of antibodies against EHNV was detected by ELISA in the serum of grower fish at this time, providing the first evidence that EHNV might not kill all infected trout. EHNV infection on Farm B occurred after transfer of fingerlings from Farm C in the Murrumbidgee river catchment. When investigated, there were no obvious signs of diseases on Farm C. 'Routine' mortalities were collected over 10 d on Farm C and EHNV was detected in 2.1% of 190 fish. Tracing investigations of sources of supply of fingerlings to Farm B also led to investigation of Farm D in Victoria, where the prevalence of anti-EHNV antibodies in 3+ to 4+ fish was 1.3%. The results of this study indicate that EHNV may be found in trout in all age classes, need not be associated with clinically detectable disease in the population, can be transferred with shipments of live fish, can be detected in a small proportion of 'routine' mortalities and may be associated with specific antibodies in a small proportion of older fish. Sampling to detect EHNV for certification purposes should be based on examination of 'routine' mortalities rather than random samples of live fish. Antigen-capture ELISA can be used as a cost effective screening test to detect EHNV on a farm provided that sampling rates conform with statistical principles.  相似文献

Infections of brown trout Salmo trutta L. by larvae of the nematode Eustrongylides sp. were studied over a period of two years in Fernworthy Reservoir, Devon. The parasite, here as elsewhere in Britain, is acquired only in the lake itself and not in the streams feeding it. Both native and introduced brown trout were infected but not rainbow trout which did not survive sufficiently long in the reservoir. The parasite showed a preference for female fish and for fish over 20 cm in length. Since these latter were approaching the end of their natural life span in the lake, there was insufficient time for the parasites to accumulate in older fish. No seasonal changes in infection levels or size composition of the parasite population were recorded. The larvae occurred in capsules, the majority of which were attached to the stomach wall. No local pathological effects associated with the capsules were observed and infested fish were of similar length, weight and condition to uninfected ones. The absence of harmful effects upon the trout in Fernworthy Reservoir is compared and contrasted with the effects of the parasite in other localities. It is concluded that although Eustrongylides can occasionally cause damage to some species of fish, there is no conclusive evidence that it does so to trout. but its unsightly appearance and harmful effects on birds renders it an undesirable parasite in any fishery.  相似文献

Rainbow trout have been introduced to six of the seven continents and currently are widely stocked for sport fishing. Despite their broad distribution, outside of New Zealand, little is known about the effects of rainbow trout on native species, especially fishes. We conducted experiments in an artificial stream to assess hypotheses that stocked rainbow trout significantly affected: (1) mesohabitat use, (2) foraging success, (3) social behavior, and (4) spatial organization of warpaint shiners (Luxilus coccogenis) a common native minnow found in southern Appalachian streams, with similar patterns of microhabitat use to rainbow trout. We replicated experiments at high and low natural densities (two and five warpaint shiners) and spring/fall (12 °C) and summer (17 °C) temperatures. Treatments included: (1) a control (five warpaint shiners), (2) trout (five warpaint shiners and one rainbow trout), (3) large fish control (five warpaint shiners and one river chub) and (4) density control (six warpaint shiners). The presence of rainbow trout produced a shift by warpaint shiners from pool mesohabitats to shallower, higher velocity habitats with more variable substrata, as well as reduced prey capture success, feeding efficiency, and distance from the front of the tank (i.e., warpaint shiners moved closer to food release points), and increased the distance to the additional fish (i.e., avoidance of the rainbow trout). Negative effects on foraging behaviors were stronger in 12 °C treatments. In a realistic stream flume the presence of rainbow trout produced effects that likely influenced individual fitness of warpaint shiners. The potential effects of stocking rainbow trout on native non-game fishes, such as warpaint shiners should be assessed when implementing or evaluating stocking programs.  相似文献

Synopsis Koaro, Galaxias brevipinnis, were once the only fish present in Lake Rotopounamu but, after a comprehensive survey in 1990, none were found in the lake or its tributary streams. Introduced native fish, specifically smelt, Retropinna retropinna, and the common bully, Gobiomorphus cotidianus, now occur in this lake. As koaro co-exist with bullies in other lakes, but have declined in landlocked lakes containing smelt, the disappearance of koaro in Lake Rotopounamu is attributed to the introduction of smelt alone. Interspecific competition for food between 0 + year old koaro and smelt, combined with predation by 2 + year old smelt on koaro larvae, are thought to be responsible. Such a mechanism would be consistent with theoretical predictions of predator-prey regulation systems within same chain food webs. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, which were introduced into a number of local lakes before smelt, and which preyed on the koaro, have been blamed for the decline of the koaro populations. However, the disappearance of koaro in Lake Rotopounamu shows that smelt can reduce koaro populations independently of trout predation.  相似文献
