The dominance hierarchy was studied by direct observation within a total of forty-four groups of pigs aged between 8 and 30 weeks. The groups were usually made up of eight animals and included both castrated males and immature females. On the introduction of preveiously unacquainted pigs vigorous fighting occurred, usually between pairs of animals. More than one encounter was often seen to occur simultaneously. This ceased within about 24 hr and the group could be ranked by 48 hr. The top animal in the dominance hierarchy, however, was identifiable within 30 to 60 min. Social rank was not correlated with sex and weight, and it is suggested that rank is a resultant of the interaction of a number of factors. The dominant animals directed most of their aggression to the rank immediately below. The basic structure of the hierarchy results from the summation of the strong, stable relationships which seem to develop between animals immediately adjacent to each other in the social hierarchy.  相似文献

Recognition and social dominance inPolistes wasps   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been known for a long time that relationships among femalePolistes wasps are controlled by dominance through linear hierarchy. A classical model of the development of social hierarchies suggests that individual recognition intervenes to maintain the hierarchy established after the initial confrontation that takes place when two animals meet for the first time. This hypothesis was tested in the present study onPolistes gallicus (L.) foundresses. A tolerance index was calculated from the reactions of a dominant female when already known or unacquainted females were successively encountered. Results show that individualised social recognition is possible and that it takes more than 4 h of inter-individual contact for individual characteristics to be memorised.  相似文献

The relation between stereotypes and social distance towards The Netherlands' minority groups is analysed in a survey of 204 secondary school and university students. Two aspects of social distance are distinguished. One is the amount of social distance towards minority groups, and the other is an ethnic hierarchy of minority groups in social distance. This ethnic hierarchy was shared by a majority of the students. Forty‐eight stereotypes scored for seven ethnic groups were found to converge into six latent dimensions common to all groups. The association between stereotypes, social distance and the ethnic hierarchy depended on the domain of contact. Stereotypes appear to anchor the ethnic hierarchy into Dutch institutions and values, rather than classical racism.  相似文献

Crayfish are known for their innate aggressiveness and willingness to quickly establish dominance relationships among group members. Consequently, the formation of dominance hierarchies and the analysis of behavioral patterns displayed during agonistic encounters have mostly been tested in environments that provide no immediate resources besides space. We tested the hypothesis that social hierarchy formation in crayfish serves to determine access to future resources. Individuals within groups of three juvenile crayfish were allowed to form a social hierarchy in a featureless environment before a single food resource was presented. Higher dominance indices were significantly correlated with increased access to the food. The highest ranked crayfish spent more time in contact with the food than did medium-ranked and lowest ranked crayfish, and crayfish of medium rank spent more time in contact with the resource than did lowest ranked animals. The highest ranked crayfish consolidated their dominant status in the presence of food, indicated by a complete absence of any submissive behaviors during that period. The results of these experiments show that the disposition of crayfish to engage in fighting and formation of a dominance hierarchy in a featureless environment serves to determine future access to an emerging resource, thereby entailing greater benefits for animals of higher social rank.  相似文献

The relationship between weight asymmetry and aggression when mixing groups of unacquainted pigs in two different environments was investigated. Ten groups of 4 female (LandracexYorkshire), unacquainted pigs with a weight asymmetry of 3.1+/-0.2 kg (mean weight: 16.6+/-0.6 kg) between each pig, and another 10 groups with a weight asymmetry of 1.2+/-0.1 kg (mean weight: 14.1+/-0.1 kg), were mixed at the age of 7 weeks. Ten of the groups (five of each) were mixed in an experimental pen with a heterogeneous distribution of straw. The pen consisted of two main compartments with straw in one of them, and a passage area with concrete floor in between. The other 10 groups were mixed in the same pen, but with a homogenous distribution of straw (straw spread all over the pen). The results showed that fighting duration was significantly shorter in groups with large weight asymmetry than in groups with small weight asymmetry irrespective of the environment. The number of bites delivered during the fights in the heterogeneous environment was lower in groups with large weight asymmetry than in groups with small weight asymmetry. In the homogenous environment, however, there was no significant difference between groups with large and small weight asymmetries regarding the number of bites. The combination of a limited straw area and a small weight asymmetry resulted in the greatest number of bites. In groups with large weight asymmetry, the largest pig won around 50% of the fights, and 25% of the variation in the percentage of fights won was explained by the weight asymmetry. In groups with small weight asymmetry, less than 10% of the variation in the percentage of fights won could be explained by weight asymmetry. The two largest pigs delivered significantly more bites and spent significantly more time fighting than the smallest pig. The second largest pig received significantly more bites and body lesions than the smallest pig in the groups. Fights between the two largest pigs had a significantly longer duration than when other pigs were involved. The results were discussed in relation to sequential assessment theory and resource defence theory.  相似文献

The aim of present study was to investigate the microbial colonization of worn contact lenses (CLs) and to evaluate the inhibitory effect of pomelo (Citrus maxima) peels essential oil on the biofilm development on unworn CLs. The essential oil was isolated by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, twenty compounds being isolated. The antimicrobial activity of pomelo oil was tested against S. epidermidis and P. aeruginosa strains, known for their ability to develop biofilms on prosthetic devices, by qualitative screening methods and quantitative assay of the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in order to evaluate the antibiofilm activity. Our study revealed that all worn CLs where 100% colonized by staphylococci and Enterobacteriaceae strains. The pomelo essential oil inhibited the development of bacterial biofilms formed by Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms on soft CLs, its antibiofilm activity being specific and dependent on different physical parameters (contact time and temperature). The architecture of bacterial biofilms developed on soft contact lenses was analyzed using confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM).  相似文献

This is a survey of the causes of blindness recorded by three students of The City University during a six-week stay at NOOR Eye Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan. The nature of the sample used makes it unsuitable for direct comparison with surveys from other countries. Nevertheless, broad conclusions can be drawn. Severe eye disease is a considerable problem in Afghanistan, in common with other developing countries. The survey included all new patients seen in the outpatient clinic, blind to the extent of being unable to count fingers at more than three metres, in one eye or both. The sample of patients was examined by an ophthalmologist working with our team. A diagnosis was made and various social and demographic questions were asked with the help of an interpreter. In all, 473 patients were examined and included in our survey sample, a very high proportion of the new patients attending the clinic (40.46 per cent). The main causes of blindness were found to be cataract (31.12 per cent), corneal scarring (19.8 per cent), chorioretinal degenerations (6.79 per cent), glaucoma (6.65 per cent) and aphakia (5.52 per cent). Of the major causes of blindness, about forty per cent of the cases were considered remediable, and about thirty per cent could have been prevented. An outstanding difference between the causes of blindness in developed nations and those seen in Afghanistan was the amount of blindness caused by infection, especially in the younger age groups (up to 30 years). Cataract is a major cause of blindness in the older age groups of both societies. People suffering from ocular disease in Afghanistan wait until their sight is badly impaired or lost completely before seeking treatment. This results from a lack of knowledge of what could be done to conserve sight, the irreversible nature of many eye diseases, the distances involved in travelling to the clinic, and even a lack of knowledge of its existence.  相似文献

Effect of straw on the behaviour of growing pigs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The effects of straw on the behaviour of young growing pigs were studied in two experiments. In Experiment 1, groups of three pigs, aged about 7 weeks, were housed in raised decks with or without straw bedding. Time-lapse video recording showed no major differences between treatments in the amount or daily pattern of overall activity and feeding. Detailed observations showed that bedding reduced the incidence of rooting and chewing on pen-mates, but had little effect on other social activities such as mounting and aggressive biting. Experiment 2 compared groups of eight growing pigs aged about 10 weeks, housed in floor pens with or without a small amount of straw provided daily in a rack. Pigs with straw concentrated more of their daily activity into the period when straw was fresh, but the total amount of overall activity and time spent feeding were not affected. Rooting and chewing of pen-mates were the only social activities reduced by the provision of fresh straw. In these studies, where straw was not required to compensate for deficiencies such as low temperatures or hunger, the one major function of straw was to provide a stimulus and outlet for rooting and chewing, with a resulting reduction in such activities directed at pen-mates.  相似文献

We examined effects of deprivation of feed, social contact and bedding on the choice behaviour in Y maze tests. Eighty pigs were used to study two main effects: feed (estimated voluntary feed intake (VFI) vs. 70% VFI) and bedding (presence vs. absence), experiment 1; social contact (full vs. restricted) and bedding (presence vs. absence), experiment 2; and feed (as in experiment 1) and social contact (as in experiment 2), experiment 3.Overall pigs consistently chose feed and social contact over bedding. While social contact was more preferred than feed in experiment 3, there was substantial variation between pigs in their choice behaviour. The overall choice behaviour in experiment 3 contradicts previous research, but differences such as the preference methodology as well as the level of deprivation, level of reward and cost involved in accessing reward, may be responsible. Average daily weight gain (ADG) was affected in experiment 3: both feed and social restriction reduced ADG. While the feed effect is expected, one interpretation of the social effect is that social deprivation, through stress, may have reduced ADG. These results provide limited support for the notion that deprivation of a highly preferred resource may disrupt biological function.  相似文献

When primate societies merge, the probabilities of genetic combinations are altered. What occurs when previously unacquainted groups meet is a product of the social organization of the species and a major contributor to genetic variance. Two colonies ofSaimiri sciureus that had lived independently for five to seven years were permitted to meet. One colony was subjected to injurious aggression by a second colony. We suggest that the demographic characteristics of the groups are suggestive determinants of the acceptance or rejection of unfamiliarSaimiri.  相似文献

A slime-producing isolate of Staphylococcus epidermidis attached to FDA Group II hydrogel contact lenses persisted on rabbit eyes for up to 14 days, but except for minor redness of the eye no other effect was observed. Eye flora of eight representative New Zealand White rabbits included four different species of Staphylococcus including S. epidermidis and one species of Micrococcus, none of which produced overtly obvious biofilms. The slime-producing strain of S. epidermidis adhered more effectively to lenses than a non-slime-producing strain, and lenses challenged with the slime-producing strain remained on the rabbit eye for longer time periods than those with a non-slime-producing strain. Bacteria associated with the contact lens may affect the retention of the lens on the rabbit cornea during experimental studies.  相似文献

Comparison of the locomotor behaviour of normal, unilaterally and bilaterally blinded goldfish (Carassius auratus) demonstrated the roles of perspective vision (depth perception), which requires binocular vision, and of vision provided by only one eye, in the control of locomotion. Because normal and bilaterally blinded fish exhibited similar size and direction of angles of turn, a similar number of consecutive turns in the same direction and the same turning frequency, normal, binocular vision plays no role in the control of turning behaviour. Unilaterally blinded fish exhibited a strong bias in turning behaviour which resulted in their displaying circus movements toward the blinded side, a direction opposite to that reported by others for both invertebrates and vertebrates with unilateral sensory elimination. The mean step length was significantly increased by both uni- and bilateral blinding, and its temporal relationship with turning frequency and distance swum was also changed. Perspective vision (binocular) therefore controls these parameters. The significantly lower velocity of bilaterally blinded fish and the similarity between the other two test groups, indicated that sight by one eye only was sufficient to mediate velocity control.  相似文献

In this study, we analyzed the dynamic motor patterns of attack or defense and age hierarchy to investigate aggression in African mole-rats Cryptomys foxi and the house mouse Mus musculus. The objective is to verify if the social order of dominance is associated with age hierarchy within the social group. Using the resident-intruder experimental model, we created a series of dyadic encounters that comprised of a standard adult mouse or rat paired with groups of aggressive and hierarchically age-ranked small animals in a territorial aggression test. Our results indicate that though the adult animals displayed the highest level of aggression, indicating their dominant status, there was no age-related hierarchical formation in the expression of aggression. In the non-territorial aggression test in which rats or mice were grouped together, animals displayed low levels of aggression compared to the territorial test and no hierarchical age-related order. These results indicate that the magnitude of aggression expressed by animals in the social group, based on their motor patterns of attack and defense, seem to depend on individual competitive strategies in reaction to various environmental challenges and not necessarily on age hierarchy.  相似文献

The oldest preserved visual systems are to be found in the extinct trilobites, marine euarthropods which existed between about 520 and 250 million years ago. Because they possessed a calcified cuticle, they have a good fossil record, and commonly the lens-bearing surfaces of their paired compound eyes are well preserved. The sublensar structures, however, remain unknown. Three kinds of eyes have been distinguished. Holochroal eyes, apomorphic for trilobites, typically have many contiguous small lenses, set on a kidney-shaped visual surface. Lens optics, angular range of vision, and ontogeny have been established for many compound eyes. Some pelagic trilobites have enormous eyes, subtending a panoramic field of view. Schizochroal eyes are found only in one group, the phacopids (Ordovician to Devonian). These have large lenses, separated from each other by cuticular material, and the lenses have a complex doublet or triplet internal structure, which could focus light sharply. The optics of phacopid eyes are becoming increasingly well known despite the fact that there are no direct counterparts in any living arthropods today. Schizochroal eyes are apomorphic for phacopids and were derived by paedomorphosis from a holochroal precursor. Abathochroal eyes are confined to a short-lived Cambrian group, the eodiscids (of which most representatives were blind). Less is known about them than other trilobite eyes and their origins remain obscure. Some trilobite groups had no eyes, but had other kinds of sensory organs. In Upper Devonian times several groups of trilobites independently underwent progressive eye-reduction leading to blindness, related to prevailing environmental conditions of the time. The last trilobites (of Carboniferous and Permian age), however, had normal holochroal eyes, which persisted until the final extinction of trilobites at the end of the Permian.  相似文献

Pre-slaughter stress has a negative impact on animal welfare and on meat quality. Aggressive behaviour when pigs are mixed together for transportation to, or on arrival at, the abattoir is an important factor in pre-slaughter stress. Aggressiveness of pigs varies between individuals in the population, and this study investigated its effects on stress and meat quality at slaughter. We mixed pigs at a young age to identify individuals of high (H) or low (L) aggressive temperament using the previously validated approach of lesion scoring. To contrast extremes of social stress single-sex groups of eight pigs were mixed according to their aggressiveness in HH, HL or LL combinations or left unmixed (U) prior to transport and slaughter (n = 271). Each treatment was replicated in at least two groups in each of four slaughter batches. Mixing per se had little effect, but mixed groups composed of aggressive pigs (HH) had more carcass skin lesions and higher levels of plasma cortisol at slaughter and had loin muscle samples with higher pH at 24 h, and lower redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) compared to the other treatments. Females had higher levels of plasma cortisol at slaughter, a more rapid decline in pH post-slaughter and greater lean content of meat. Lactate and creatine kinase (CK) levels and meat pH were affected by the interaction of sex and treatment. Genetic factors, dam and sire line composition, and halothane locus (ryanodine receptor 1, RYR1) genotype, also affected a number of production and meat quality parameters as expected. Additionally, 'commercially normal' levels of social stress were studied in four further slaughter batches with no manipulation of group composition (n = 313). In these pigs, the proportion of unfamiliar pigs and group size of lairage groups explained limited variation in lesion scores at slaughter, but earlier aggressiveness did not. High numbers of skin lesions on the carcass were associated with high levels of cortisol and lactate and low glucose at slaughter, but not with meat quality measures. When stress and meat quality measures were compared for all pigs, high lactate was associated with low early pH and high drip loss, while high cortisol and CK were associated with high pH at 24 h and changes in meat colour. In conclusion, mixing pigs of above average aggressiveness resulted in greater aggression and stress, and changes in meat quality parameters, consistent with the effects of pre-slaughter stress on muscle chemistry.  相似文献

Micropopulations consisting of six male mice of different genotypes were studied (each of lines A/He, CBA/Lac, C57BL/6J, DD, YT, and PT was represented by one male). Interlinear differences in the level of social dominance and the effects of genotype, social hierarchy, and season on in vitro testosterone production by testes were examined under different incubation conditions. The testosterone production was estimated under control conditions and under stimulation with human chorionic gonadotropin (CG). Significant genetic differences in the initial and CG-stimulated testosterone production by testes incubated in vitro were found. By the control production, the genotypes fell into two groups: lines C57BL/6J, A/He, and CBA/Lac had low production of the hormone; lines YT, PT, and DD, high production. By responsiveness of gonads to CG, the genotypes fell into three groups: line CBA/Lac had low testosterone production by testes; lines C57BL/6J, A/He, YT, and DD, line PT, intermediate production; and line PT, high production. The obtained data indicate stability of genetic polymorphism for the responsiveness of testes to gonadotropins, because neither season nor the formation of social hierarchy could significantly change the interlinear differences. In line PT characterized by high hormonal activity of gonads in the control and under stimulation with gonadotropins, males became dominant in a significantly greater number of cases studied during the formation of hierarchy in micropopulations. The dynamics of both control production of a male sex hormone and responsiveness of testes to CG was established in vitro during the formation of social hierarchy; the effects of season on this dynamics were revealed. Specific characteristics of secretory activity of testes were detected in the control and under stimulation with gonadotropins, depending on incubation conditions. Seasonal and genotypic characteristics of the responsiveness of testes to CG were revealed under different incubation conditions. Genotypic characteristics indicate interlinear differences in the degree of inertia of testosterone biosynthesis on exposure to gonadotropins.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes a variety of diseases in humans including lung and ocular infections. Infections of the cornea are usually associated with wearing contact lenses and can result in loss of vision. This study aimed to determine the effect of carbon or nitrogen limitation on the adhesion to contact lenses of a strain of Ps. aeruginosa isolated from contact lens-related corneal inflammation. Cells were grown in a continuous culture apparatus in varying levels of glucose or ammonia to effect nutrient limitation. Adhesion to contact lenses was measured as total counts and viable counts. The cell surface hydrophobicity and charge were measured using adhesion to surface-modified Sepharose. Changes in lipopolysaccharide were determined using 1D SDS-PAGE and changes in cell-surface proteins were measured using 2D gel electrophoresis. The more the cultures were nitrogen limited, the greater the increase in adhesion to unworn hydrogel contact lenses 0.3 x 10(3) - 2.2 x 10(3) cells/mm2 on Etafilon A lenses. Cells that were carbon limited showed a greater increase in adhesion to contact lenses when the lenses had been coated in artificial tears. It appeared that lipopolysaccharide may have been involved in the constitutive adhesion to unworn lenses that occurred during C-limitation, whereas changes in the outer membrane proteins contributed to the increased adhesion under nitrogen limitation, or the change in adhesion that occurred to carbon-limited cells using contact lenses coated in artificial tears. Nine cell-surface proteins appeared during nitrogen limitation with kDa/pI of 75/4.8, 4.9, 5.0; 62/5.6; 89/6.5; 38/6.4; 28/1.5; 18/6.4; 12/4.5. Any or all of these may have been involved in the increased adhesion and further experiments are underway to examine this possibility.  相似文献

Social recognition is essential for the maintenance of a stable group structure. Failure to recognise familiar conspecifics in social groups of juvenile pigs may initiate agonistic encounters that can compromise welfare and productivity. Current housing systems may allow build up of atmospheric ammonia that might, in turn, interfere with the olfactory system and compromise olfactory perception. In the present study, 16 juvenile pigs were housed in fresh air while another 16 pigs were kept in an ammoniated atmosphere (approximately 36ppm) for 1 week prior to test and another week during testing. We then assessed the role of olfaction in social recognition and determined whether chronic exposure to ammonia compromised discrimination based on olfactory perception by comparing the pigs' responses to selected cues from a familiar and an unfamiliar pig presented simultaneously in separate chambers of a modified Y-maze in each of two test situations (near, remote). Visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile cues were all provided in the "near" test situation; here, the stimulus pigs were presented in two separate chambers behind clear perspex walls containing an aperture that allowed nose-to-nose contact between the test and stimulus pigs. On the other hand, the "remote" test provided only olfactory cues via air passed from the chambers containing the stimulus pigs into the test chamber. Each test lasted 5min and the pigs' behaviour was recorded via overhead video cameras; we then measured the accumulated times spent near and the numbers of visits made to the familiar and the unfamiliar stimulus pigs as well as the transitions between them. Overall, pigs made more visits to and spent significantly longer near both the stimulus pigs in the near test than in the remote one (ANOVA, P<0.001). They also made more transitions between the stimuli in the former test than the latter (P<0.001). Pigs from both the ammonia and the fresh-air treatment groups showed social discrimination. However, pigs that had received chronic exposure to ammonia visited the familiar pig more often and spent longer near it than the unfamiliar one regardless of the test situation (P<0.05) whereas those reared in fresh air spent longer near the unfamiliar animal (P<0.05). The present results suggest that pigs from both treatment groups employed olfactory cues in social recognition, but that chronic exposure to ammonia did not interfere with this ability. However, ammonia treatment seemingly affected social preferences, thus indicating an unknown and more fundamental effect of living in ammoniated atmospheres.  相似文献

Background

Previous research has demonstrated the capacity of animal presence to stimulate social interaction among humans. The purpose of this study was to examine the interactions of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with an adult and their typically-developing peers in the presence of animals (two guinea pigs) compared to toys.

Methods

Ninety-nine children from 15 classrooms in 4 schools met the inclusion criteria and participated in groups of three (1 child with ASD and 2 typically-developing peers). Each group was video-recorded during three 10-minute, free-play sessions with toys and three 10-minute, free-play sessions with two guinea pigs. Two blinded observers coded the behavior of children with ASD and their peers. To account for the nested study design, data were analyzed using hierarchical generalized linear modeling.

Results

Participants with ASD demonstrated more social approach behaviors (including talking, looking at faces, and making tactile contact) and received more social approaches from their peers in the presence of animals compared to toys. They also displayed more prosocial behaviors and positive affect (i.e., smiling and laughing) as well as less self-focused behaviors and negative affect (i.e., frowning, crying, and whining) in the presence of animals compared to toys.

Conclusions

These results suggest that the presence of an animal can significantly increase positive social behaviors among children with ASD.  相似文献
