New identifications of radiolaria and conodonts allow clarifying the biostratigraphy of the Pennsylvanian and Permian deposits in San Salvador Patlanoaya (Puebla State, Mexico). The radiolaria are sometimes relatively common in the series, but weakly diversified and endemic. Among the conodonts, Streptognathodus bellus is characteristic of the Late ‘Virgilian’ sensu Baars, probably coeval with the Early Wolfcampian sensu Thompson or Wilde, the Bursumian of Ross & Ross or the Orenburgian–Asselian stage or substage of Russia (sensu Davydov). San Salvador Patlanoaya is a key-section for the Pennsylvanian–Permian boundary in Mexico.  相似文献

Constraining the age of strata is a fundamental source of uncertainty in the study of sedimentary rocks, particularly in restricted basins that generally lack index fossils. An illustrative example of this is the evaporite‐bearing Salina Group in the Michigan Basin. Our integrated study of facies, paleontology, and stable isotope geochemistry from the base of the Salina Group in Wisconsin addresses long‐standing chronostratigraphic uncertainty surrounding these units. Conodont samples from the basal boundary interval (Racine‐Waubakee formation contact) produced non‐diagnostic ‘disaster’ and ‘recovery’ faunas typical of both the Mulde (Homerian) and Lau (Ludfordian) events. Strontium isotope analysis (87Sr/86Sr) of these conodonts from five horizons just below the boundary yield values between 0.70844 and 0.70850 confirming a Homerian age. Multiple carbon isotope profiles through this interval confirm the presence of a 2.5–3‰ positive excursion. Cumulatively these data constrain the base of the Salina Group in Wisconsin to the Mulde Excursion interval (late Homerian). This integrated study provides a sound initial step towards a deeper understanding of the processes of Silurian evaporite formation in the Michigan Basin.  相似文献

Candidatus Magnetobacterium bavaricum’ is unusual among magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) in terms of cell size (8–10 µm long, 1.5–2 µm in diameter), cell architecture, magnetotactic behaviour and its distinct phylogenetic position in the deep‐branching Nitrospira phylum. In the present study, improved magnetic enrichment techniques permitted high‐resolution scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X‐ray analysis, which revealed the intracellular organization of the magnetosome chains. Sulfur globule accumulation in the cytoplasm point towards a sulfur‐oxidizing metabolism of ‘Candidatus M. bavaricum’. Detailed analysis of ‘Candidatus M. bavaricum’ microhabitats revealed more complex distribution patterns than previously reported, with cells predominantly found in low oxygen concentration. No correlation to other geochemical parameters could be observed. In addition, the analysis of a metagenomic fosmid library revealed a 34 kb genomic fragment, which contains 33 genes, among them the complete rRNA gene operon of ‘Candidatus M. bavaricum’ as well as a gene encoding a putative type IV RubisCO large subunit.  相似文献

Live-collected samples of four common reef-building coral genera (Acropora, Pocillopora, Goniastrea, Porites) from subtidal and intertidal settings of Heron Reef, Great Barrier Reef, show extensive early marine diagenesis where parts of the coralla less than 3 years old contain abundant macro- and microborings and aragonite, high-Mg calcite, low-Mg calcite, and brucite cements. Many types of cement are associated directly with microendoliths and endobionts that inhabit parts of the corallum recently abandoned by coral polyps. The occurrence of cements that generally do not precipitate in normal shallow seawater (e.g., brucite, low-Mg calcite) highlights the importance of microenvironments in coral diagenesis. Cements precipitated in microenvironments may not reflect ambient seawater chemistry. Hence, geochemical sampling of these cements will contaminate trace-element and stable-isotope inventories used for palaeoclimate and dating analysis. Thus, great care must be taken in vetting samples for both bulk and microanalysis of geochemistry. Visual inspection using scanning electron microscopy may be required for vetting in many cases.  相似文献

Conodonts are a clade of chordates and are valuable indicator fossils for biostratigraphy. The segminiplanate (neogondolelliform) conodonts represent a major morphological group ranging from upper Carboniferous to Upper Triassic marine sediments. However, the morphological similarity of segminiplanate P1 elements generates problems for taxonomy, especially in the Permian and Triassic clades. This paper represents the first study of morphological variation in Triassic segminiplanate conodonts using a geometric morphometric approach. The laminar microstructures observed in conodont cross‐sections indicate that, within our analysed specimens, smaller conodonts with fewer laminae are generally from an earlier ontogenetic stage while larger conodonts with more laminae are from a later stage of ontogeny. Using linear regressions between relative warp scores from both upper and lateral views and conodont length, we demonstrate strongly allometric growth patterns for the species Paragondolella bifurcata Budurov & Stefanov. Our results indicate that the species‐group taxon Pg. praeszaboi bystrickyi (Kovacs et al.) is an early growth stage of Pg. bifurcata and thus synonymous. We suggest that the allometry of conodonts should be considered seriously, especially when there are numerous transitional morphologies between large‐ and small‐sized conodonts. Reconstructing the ontogenetic series and using larger‐sized conodonts within the numerous transitional morphologies in the population of a rock sample for the definition of new species are suggested for future studies.  相似文献

Eucalypts cover most of Australia. Here, we investigate the relative contribution of climate and geochemistry to the distribution and diversity of eucalypts. Using geostatistics, we estimate major element concentrations, pH, and electrical conductivity at sites where eucalypts have been recorded. We compare the median predicted geochemistry and reported substrate for individual species that appear associated with extreme conditions; this provides a partial evaluation of the predictions. We generate a site‐by‐species matrix by aggregating observations to the centroids of 100‐km‐wide grid cells, calculate diversity indices, and use numerical ecology methods (ordination, variation partitioning) to investigate the ecology of eucalypts and their response to climatic and geochemical gradients. We find that β‐diversity coincides with variations in climatic and geochemical patterns. Climate and geochemistry together account for less than half of the variation in eucalypt species assemblages across Australia but for greater than 80% in areas of high species richness. Climate is more important than geochemistry in explaining eucalypts species distribution and change in assemblages across Australia as a whole but there are correlations between the two sets of environmental variables. Many individual eucalypt species and entire taxonomic sections (Aromatica, Longistylus of subgenus Eucalyptus, Dumaria, and Liberivalvae of subgenus Symphyomyrtus) have distributions affected strongly by geochemistry. We conclude that eucalypt diversity is driven by steep geochemical gradients that have arisen as climate patterns have fluctuated over Australia over the Cenozoic, generally aridifying since the Miocene. The diversification of eucalypts across Australia is thus an excellent example of co‐evolution of landscapes and biota in space and time and challenges accepted notions of macroecology.  相似文献

New crystalline structures have been observed in argon ion‐milled conodont elements from a diverse suite of Ordovician taxa (‘Cordylodus robustus’, Drepanoistodus suberectus, Panderodus gracilis, Plectodina? sp., Aphelognathus sp., Periodon aculeatus), using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electron diffraction patterns of albid tissue reveal that the component crystals are extraordinarily large, in the order of hundred(s) of microns. These large albid crystals show typical cancellate porosity, although a distinctly lamellar structure has also been observed within a large albid crystal positioned between hyaline lamellar and cancellate albid tissues. There is a distinct absence of ‘interlamellar space’ within all hyaline tissues examined, which are characterized by a polycrystalline matrix of micron‐scale elongate crystals that are both strongly aligned and tightly bound within a broader lamellar structure. Optical opacity, caused by light scattering within large (≥ 0.5 µm) pores, is also a feature of both albid and polycrystalline lamellar crown tissues. Accordingly, conodont hard tissues are differentiated by crystal size and shape, as well as inter‐ and intracrystalline porosity. These new observations highlight the structural complexities of conodont histologies and the need for more comprehensive investigations particularly of transitional crown tissues, which are not well defined by terms typically used in the literature. Their histological structures are interpreted to be a product of in vivo crystallization and thus provide new insights into the relative porosity, permeability, and inherent integrity of the tissues as well as their growth relationships. Accordingly, these data not only have implications for earlier histological and palaeobiological interpretations of conodont hard tissues but are also fundamental in determining their chemical integrity, which is crucial for characterizing palaeoseawater composition and palaeoenvironmental change. The potential for conodont apatite to retain primary chemical information depends on crystal size and permeability, so the large albid crystal domains are consistent with parallel geochemical studies that suggest that cancellate albid crown is more resistant to diagenetic modification.  相似文献

The effectiveness of several leaf water models (‘string‐of‐lakes’, ‘desert river’ and the Farquhar–Gan model) are evaluated in predicting the enrichment of leaf water along a maize leaf at different humidities. Progressive enrichment of both vein xylem water and leaf water was observed along the blade. At the tip, the maximum observed enrichment for the vein water was 17.6‰ at 50% relative humidity (RH) whereas that for the leaf water was 50‰ at 34% RH and 19‰ at 75% RH. The observed leaf water maximum was a fraction (0.5–0.6) of the theoretically possible maximum. The ‘string‐of‐lakes’ and ‘desert river’ models predict well the variation of leaf water enrichment pattern with humidity but overestimate the average enrichment of bulk leaf water. However, the Farquhar–Gan model gives good prediction for these two aspects of leaf water enrichment. Using the anatomical dimensions of vein xylem overestimates the effective longitudinal Péclet number (Pl). Possible explanations for this discrepancy between the effective and the xylem‐based estimate of Pl are discussed. The need to characterize the heterogeneity of transpiration rate over the leaf surface in studies of leaf water enrichment is emphasized. The possibility that past atmospheric humidity can be predicted from the slope of the Δ18O spatial variation of leaf macrofossils found in middens is proposed.  相似文献

Contemporary perfumery has its roots in the work of the past, and many of the perfumes from this time have long since disappeared. What follows is a short account of some of the most famous perfumes from the past which have been inspired by the novel synthetic materials of the time. These important creations include, ‘Fougère Royale’ by Houbigant (1884) containing coumarin ( 1 ), ‘Jicky’ by Guerlain (1889) containing vanillin ( 2 ) and linalool ( 3 ), ‘Vera Violetta’ by Roger & Gallet (1892) containing α‐ and β‐ionone ( 4 and 5 , resp.), ‘Trèfle Incarnat’ by Piver (1898) containing isoamyl salicylate ( 6 ), ‘La Rose Jacqueminot’ of Coty (1904) containing Rhodinol ( 7 ), ‘Après l'Ondée’ by Guerlain (1906) containing para‐anisaldehyde ( 8 ), ‘Quelques Fleurs’ by Houbigant (1912) containing hydroxycitronellal ( 9 ), ‘N°5’ by Chanel (1921) containing the aldehydes C‐10 ( 10 ), C‐110 ( 11 ), and C‐12 ( 12 ), ‘Nuit De Noël’ by Caron (1922) containing 6‐isobutylquinoline ( 14 ), and ‘Femme’ by Rochas (1944) containing the so‐called ‘aldehyde C‐14’ ( 15 , γ‐undecalactone). The Osmotheque, the International Conservatory of Perfumes, was launched in 1990 and is regarded as a primary source of knowledge for the history of perfumery. Its vocation is to compile an amazing collection of 1700 perfumes (400 of them almost forgotten fragrances) – jewels of perfumery.  相似文献

Background information. For explanation of the formation of ‘dark’ neurons, an enigmatic phenomenon in neuropathology, we hypothesized recently that all spaces between the ultrastructural elements visible in the traditional transmission electron microscope are filled with a gel structure that stores free energy in the form of non‐covalent interactions, is continuous in the whole soma—dendrite domains of neurons, and is capable of whole‐cell phase transition. This hypothesis was deduced from the fact that ‘dark’ neurons can be formed, even under conditions extremely unfavourable for enzyme‐mediated biochemical processes, if initiated by a physical damage. In order to gain further information on this gel structure, we perfused transcardially rats for 5 min with physiological saline containing 1 mM SDS before the perfusion of a fixative for electron microscopy. Results. Dramatic compaction of visibly intact ultrastructural elements was caused in the whole soma—dendrite domains of thinly scattered neurons (‘dark’ neurons), whereas substantial cytoplasmic swelling and patchy ultrastructural disintegration occurred in numerous other neurons (‘light’ neurons). Similar morphological changes were observed in scattered astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, pericytes and endothelial cells. Conclusions. These observations: (i) support the existence of the above intracellular gel structure in neurons; (ii) allow the conclusion that this gel structure is present in the form of an ubiquitous trabecular network surrounded by a confluent system of fluid cytoplasm; (iii) draw attention to the possibility that the previous two statements also apply to other cell types of the brain tissue; and (iv) suggest that pressure‐induced direct channels exist between neurons and astrocytes.  相似文献

Centromeres are sites for assembly of the chromosomal structures that mediate faithful segregation at mitosis and meiosis. This function is conserved across species, but the DNA components that are involved in kinetochore formation differ greatly, even between closely related species. To shed light on the nature, evolutionary timing and evolutionary dynamics of rice centromeres, we decoded a 2.25‐Mb DNA sequence covering the centromeric region of chromosome 8 of an indica rice variety, ‘Kasalath’ (Kas‐Cen8). Analysis of repetitive sequences in Kas‐Cen8 led to the identification of 222 long terminal repeat (LTR)‐retrotransposon elements and 584 CentO satellite monomers, which account for 59.2% of the region. A comparison of the Kas‐Cen8 sequence with that of japonica rice ‘Nipponbare’ (Nip‐Cen8) revealed that about 66.8% of the Kas‐Cen8 sequence was collinear with that of Nip‐Cen8. Although the 27 putative genes are conserved between the two subspecies, only 55.4% of the total LTR‐retrotransposon elements in ‘Kasalath’ had orthologs in ‘Nipponbare’, thus reflecting recent proliferation of a considerable number of LTR‐retrotransposons since the divergence of two rice subspecies of indica and japonica within Oryza sativa. Comparative analysis of the subfamilies, time of insertion, and organization patterns of inserted LTR‐retrotransposons between the two Cen8 regions revealed variations between ‘Kasalath’ and ‘Nipponbare’ in the preferential accumulation of CRR elements, and the expansion of CentO satellite repeats within the core domain of Cen8. Together, the results provide insights into the recent proliferation of LTR‐retrotransposons, and the rapid expansion of CentO satellite repeats, underlying the dynamic variation and plasticity of plant centromeres.  相似文献

The Barcaliente Formation in its type section provides significant conodont occurrences in the Mid‐Carboniferous Boundary interval (between the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian sub‐periods). A sequence of Declinognathodus morphotype appearances (considered here as species) is recognized from the uppermost Serpukhovian to the lower Bashkirian. These morphotypes belong to Declinognathodus noduliferus (Ellison & Graves) sensu lato, the primary marker for the worldwide correlation of the Mid‐Carboniferous Boundary. Among them, D. inaequalis (Higgins) appears to have been the first species to occur at the Mid‐Carboniferous Boundary bed in the Arrow Canyon GSSP. A morphocline between D. bernesgae (Sanz‐López et al.) and D. inaequalis is studied here to identify the bed correlated with the GSSP. Other diagnostic first occurrences of conodonts (Rachistognathus minutus (Higgins & Bouckaert), D. noduliferus, D. lateralis (Higgins & Bouckaert), Idiognathoides asiaticus Nigmadganov & Nemirovskaya and I. corrugatus (Harris & Hollingsworth)) are evaluated as chrono‐markers throughout their worldwide distribution, particularly for the Eurasian faunas. The available secondary markers provide a better resolution and support chrono‐correlation in sections other than that at the GSSP. The worldwide first and late occurrences of studied taxa are considered within the background of the Mid‐Carboniferous Extinction Event and the conodont overturn, where crises progenitor Declinognathodus gave rise to members of the Family Idiognathodontidae. Firstly, progenitor taxa are good biostratigraphic tools, whereas local extinction of genera considered Mississippian in age and new taxa arising later in the post‐crises radiation suggest an early Bashkirian palaeogeography and climatic conditions confining temporarily the biogeographic distribution of conodonts.

Ozarkodinid conodonts were one of the most successful groups of agnathan vertebrates. Only the oropharyngeal feeding apparatus of conodonts was mineralized, and the skeletal elements were generally disarticulated on the death and decay of the body. Occasionally, however, they were preserved in association as ''natural assemblages'', fossilized in situ after post-mortem collapse of the apparatus. From analysis of element arrangement in natural assemblages of Idiognathodus from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois we have produced a precise scale model of the feeding apparatus of ozarkodinid conodonts. At the front lay an axial Sa element, flanked by two groups of four close-set elongate Sb and Sc elements which were inclined obliquely inwards and forwards; above these elements lay a pair of arched and inward pointing M elements. Behind the S-M array lay transversely oriented and bilaterally opposed Pb and Pa elements. Our model sheds new light on food acquisition in conodonts. We propose that the anterior S and M elements of ozarkodinid conodonts were attached to cartilaginous plates. In order for the animal to feed, these plates were first everted, and then drawn back and upward over the anterior edge of an underlying cartilage. These movements produced a highly effective grasping action, the cusps and denticles of the elements converging to grab and impale any food item that lay anterior to the open array. According to this hypothesis, the anterior part of the conodont apparatus is comparable to, and possibly homologous with, the lingual apparatus of extant agnathans; the elements themselves, however, have no direct homologues. <br>  相似文献

Abstract: The osteology of Thaiichthys buddhabutrensis, nov. gen., from the Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous of Thailand is described on the basis of a collection of well‐preserved specimens. The mode of preservation of the material allows describing the external anatomy, as well as some elements of the internal anatomy (braincase, elements of the vertebral column). Most of the cranial and postcranial skeleton shows a rather conservative anatomy for ‘semionotiformes’, but the jaw apparatus displays specializations. Variations observed in the ossification pattern of the skull roof and of the cheek, in the morphology of the median dorsal scales and in fin rays’ count indicate that caution should be applied when these characters are used in diagnoses and in phylogenetic analyses. A phylogenetic analysis including a set of gars, of ‘semionotiformes’, of Macrosemiiformes and of Halecomorphi shows the following features: (1) the monophyly of Holostei; (2) sister‐pair relationships between Tlayuamichin/Semiolepis, Isanichthys/’Lepidotes’ latifrons and Araripelepidotes/Pliodetes; (3) the latter pair, together with Thaiichthys and possibly ‘Lepidotes’ mantelli, are resolved as stem Lepisosteiformes; and (4) the ‘semionotiformes’ (a group gathering species of Semionotus and Lepidotes) do not form a clade.  相似文献

The taxonomy of Lomechusini Fleming has a complex history. Recent studies have shown that this group is polyphyletic; however, little is known about the evolutionary interrelationships among its constituent genera. The goals of the present study are to infer the phylogenetic relationships of Falagonia Sharp and closely related genera; to define the boundaries of those genera based on synapomorphic characters; and to explore the evolution of myrmecophily within the lineage. The phylogenetic analyses are based exclusively on morphological characters of adults. A total of 36 operational taxonomic units were used for the analysis. The best trees were selected based on maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference. During the parsimony reconstruction, different weighting strategies were used to recover the most robust phylogenetic hypothesis. Although minor differences were observed in the results of the different analyses, the topologies were consistent throughout. Several groups of genera proposed by Seevers (1965), such as the ‘Tetradonia’ and ‘Ecitopora’ groups, were not recovered. Thus, these may represent nonmonophyletic groups that were based on nonsynapomorphic diagnostic characters. Our analyses consistently recovered the genera Asheidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Delgadoidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Falagonia, Newtonidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Pseudofalagonia Santiago‐Jiménez, Sharpidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Tetradonia Wasmann and Thayeridium Santiago‐Jiménez, forming a monophyletic group that we have called the ‘Asheidium complex’. Falagonia mexicana Sharp shows seven autapomorphies, none of which were used to establish the genus. Based on the phylogenetic results, myrmecophily has evolved independently at least three times within the lineage. This study, based on morphological characters, is one of the first approaches towards gaining an understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within the polyphyletic tribe Lomechusini.  相似文献

We present the rationale for a cross‐disciplinary investigation addressing the ‘Devonian plant hypothesis’ which proposes that the evolutionary appearance of trees with deep, complex rooting systems represents one of the major biotic feedbacks on geochemical carbon cycling during the Phanerozoic. According to this hypothesis, trees have dramatically enhanced mineral weathering driving an increased flux of Ca2+ to the oceans and, ultimately, a 90% decline in atmospheric CO2 levels through the Palaeozoic. Furthermore, experimental studies indicate a key role for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in soil–plant processes and especially in unlocking the limiting nutrient phosphorus in soil via Ca‐phosphate dissolution mineral weathering. This suggests co‐evolution of roots and symbiotic fungi since the Early Devonian could well have triggered positive feedbacks on weathering rates whereby root–fungal P release supports higher biomass forested ecosystems. Long‐standing areas of uncertainty in this paradigm include the following: (1) limited fossil record documenting the origin and timeline of the evolution of tree‐sized plants through the Devonian; and (2) the effects of the evolutionary advance of trees and their in situ rooting structures on palaeosol geochemistry. We are addressing these issues by integrating palaeobotanical studies with geochemical and mineralogical analyses of palaeosol sequences at selected sites across eastern North America with a particular focus on drill cores from Middle Devonian forests in Greene County, New York State.  相似文献

Described and illustrated is Warneckea cordiformis R. D. Stone, an evidently localized endemic of coastal dry forest in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado Province. In ‘Flora Zambesiaca’ the new species would key to W. sansibarica (Taub.) Jacq.‐Fél., from which it is readily distinguished by the much smaller, ovate to cordiform leaves and white, short‐pedicellate flowers. Because of its evidently very limited occurrence as well as on‐going anthropogenic threats, Warneckea cordiformis is here assessed as ‘Critically Endangered’ (CR) B1a,b(iii) according to IUCN criteria. A key is provided to the Mozambican species of Warneckea.  相似文献

Abstract: ‘Totanuslartetianus, Elorius paludicola and ‘Tringagracilis are the three scolopacid birds from the early Miocene of Saint‐Gérand‐le‐Puy described by the French palaeontologist Milne‐Edwards in the 19th century. Since then, no revision of these taxa has been performed. Our re‐examination revealed that not much of the material originally assigned to ‘Totanuslartetianus can be retained within the species. Presumably plesiomorphic features of the humerus – and potentially the coracoid we attributed to this taxon – indicate that it is misplaced in the extant scolopacid genus and may not even belong to the Scolopacidae (sandpipers and allies), and we therefore place it in the new genus Scolopacimilis. Comparisons of the material assigned to Elorius paludicola and ‘Tringagracilis show that they are morphologically similar, both exhibiting distinct scolopacid anatomical features. The latter, however, cannot be referred to the extant taxon Tringa and is classified into the new genus Parvelorius. We further introduce three new species, ?Elorius limosoides sp. nov., and ?Parvelorius calidris sp. nov., which we have tentatively assigned to the extinct scolopacid genera Elorius and Parvelorius, respectively, and Becassius charadriioides gen. et. sp. nov., which, together with Scolopacimilis, display a morphology uncharacteristic for extant Scolopaci. For the first time we have assigned skulls to some of the postcranial elements described in this study. The presence of at least six species of Scolopaci from the early Miocene considerably increases the number of members of the group known from this time.  相似文献
