AbstractChambius kasserinensis from the late Early or early Middle Eocene Chambi locality, central Tunisia, is undoubtedly the oldest known macroscelidid and possibly the basalmost representative of the order Macroscelidea. Hence, since its discovery in 1986, Chambius has played a key role in analyses focusing on afrotherian and eutherian phylogeny; for instance, as early as 1995, Butler’s review of fossil macroscelideans highlighted the central position of Chambius in the origin of the order. Despite this, Chambius remained poorly known until recently. Here based on new mandibular fragments, well-preserved upper molars and CT scan analysis of the holotype maxilla, Chambius is revised. Its dentition is first described in detail, providing a precise characterization of the genus. Chambius is notably defined by a submolariform P4 with a three-cusped talonid, a reduced talonid on M2, and a prominent metaconule on M1?2. Interestingly, the two transverse lophs of the upper molars are basically formed by preconulecristae, evoking the recently defined peculiar bilophodonty of paenungulates. Comparisons with other Paleogene and modern macroscelidids, European Louisinidae, and North American Apheliscidae are also made, allowing the various hypotheses about the origin and early evolution of macroscelidids to be reviewed. 相似文献

The physiological parameters of heterothermy (e.g. minimum body temperature and oxygen consumption, percentage metabolic
reduction, and bout length) were measured in two species of Elephantulus elephant shrews (Elephantulus myurus and Elephantulus rozeti; Macroscelidea) as a function of ambient temperature. Both species displayed deep torpor whereby the body temperatures of
ca. 5 °C and oxygen consumption as low as 2% of basal metabolic rate were attained. Torpor bout length (n=57 bouts) never exceeded 24 h. These data are characteristic of both hibernation (minimum body temperature and metabolism)
and daily torpor (bout length), and argue that these two physiological responses may not necessarily have separate evolutionary
origins.

Part of the 12S rDNA gene was amplified and sequenced for 11 placental mammals, 3 marsupials, and 2 monotremes. Multiple alignments for these sequences and nine additional placental sequences taken from GenBank were obtained using CLUSTAL. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using standard parsimony, transversion parsimony, and Lake's method of invariants. All of our analyses uniteLoxodontia withDugong. Procavia, in turn, is a sister group to these taxa, thus supporting the monophyly of the Paenungulata. Perissodactyls are a sister group to paenungulates when transitions and transversions are both included but not when transitions are omitted. Likewise, cetaceans are a sister group to artiodactyls on minimum length trees under standard parsimony but not under transversion parsimony. Rodent monophyly and bat monophyly also receive mixed support, as does a putative alliance between primates and lagomorphs. Interestingly, the percentage divergence between the echidna and the platypus is less than for the rat and mouse. 相似文献

Microstructural features of the mammalian tooth enamel are rarely used to construct phylogenies, although macromorphological characters of the dentition figure prominently in phylogenetic analysis. In order to test the phylogenetic significance of the enamel microstructures, we investigate here the earliest proboscideans recently found in the Early Palaeogene of Africa (e.g. Phosphatherium , Daouitherium , Khamsaconus , and Numidotherium ). The results are discussed in the light of the recent advances concerning the intra- and interordinal relationships of the Proboscidea. We also consider other basal paenungulates such as 'anthracobunids', embrithopods, and hyraxes. The analysed microstructures suggest that the enamel ancestral morphotype of paenungulates was primitive for eutherian mammals, consisting in radial enamel. Some basal proboscideans developed decussations of prisms in Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB), as did most of the medium to large-sized mammals. More evolved proboscideans developed very complex enamel, the 3-D enamel, which represents an apomorphy for the group. The three-layered Schmelzmuster, typical of the elephantoids (3-D enamel, HSB, and radial enamel), is acquired during the late Eocene with the enigmatic ' Numidotherium ' savagei . This species is here considered as an advanced proboscidean along with Moeritherium -Deinotheriidae-Elephantiformes. The peculiar enamel of elephantoids arose step by step. Although homoplasy and mosaic evolution occur, the enamel microstructures represent an important source of new dental characters for phylogenetic reconstructions. As macromorphological characters testified, the diversity of the enamel microstructures observed in the various basal proboscideans illustrates an unexpected early diversity of the order in Africa. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 149 , 611–628. 相似文献

The characteristics of daily torpor were measured in the round-eared elephant shrew Macroscelides proboscideus (Macroscelidea) in response to ambient temperature and food deprivation. Elephant shrews are an ancient mammal order within a superordinal African clade including hyraxes, elephants, dugongs and the aardvark. M. proboscideus only employed torpor when deprived of food; torpor did not occur under an ad libitum diet at ambient temperatures of 10, 15 and 25?°C. Torpor bout duration ranged from <1?h to ca. 18?h. The times of entry into torpor were restricted to the scotophase, despite normothermic body temperature patterns indicating a rest phase coincident with the photophase. Full arousal was always achieved within the first 3?h of the photophase. When food deprived, the onset of the rest phase, and hence torpor, advanced with respect to the experimental photoperiod. The lowest torpor body temperature measured was 9.41?°C. Daily torpor in M. proboscideus confirms a pleisiomorphic origin of daily heterothermy. Torpor facilitates risk-averse foraging behaviour in these small omnivores by overcoming long-term energy shortfalls generated by the inherent variability of food availability in their semi-arid, El Niño-afflicted habitats. 相似文献

A retroposon analysis of Afrotherian phylogeny 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8

Recent comprehensive studies of DNA sequences support the monophyly of Afrotheria, comprising elephants, sirenians (dugongs and manatees), hyraxes, tenrecs, golden moles, aardvarks, and elephant shrews, as well as that of Paenungulata, comprising elephants, sirenians, and hyraxes. However, phylogenetic relationships among paenungulates, as well as among nonpaenungulates, have remained ambiguous. Here we applied an extensive retroposon analysis to these problems to support the monophyly of aardvarks, tenrecs, and golden moles, with elephant shrews as their sister group. Regarding phylogenetic relationships in Paenungulata, we could characterize only one informative locus, although we could isolate many insertions specific to each of three lineages, namely, Proboscidea, Sirenia, and Hyracoidea. These data prompted us to reexamine phylogenetic relationships among Paenungulata using 19 nuclear gene sequences resulting in three different analyses, namely, short interspersed element (SINE) insertions, nuclear sequence analyses, and morphological cladistics, supporting different respective phylogenies. We concluded that these three lineages diverged very rapidly in a very short evolutionary period, with the consequence that ancestral polymorphism present in the last common ancestor of Paenungulata results in such incongruence. Our results suggest the rapid fixation of many large-scale morphological synapomorphies for Tethytheria; implications of this in relation to the morphological evolution in Paenungulata are discussed. 相似文献

A geometric morphometric analysis was carried out on the crania of 13 species of elephant-shrews (Macroscelidea), a group of African mammals whose phylogeny is still debated. The material examined consisted of 313 crania and included all the genera of Macroscelididae, the unique family recognized by taxonomists. The results obtained from the analysis of the cranium shape and size, either from dorsal or lateral view, were very similar. The first one appeared more reliable because of the higher number of intersection points fixed between the cranial sutures. All the cranial features that distinguished the genus Rhynchocyon were a consequence of the extreme enlargement of frontal bones. Instead, within the subfamily Macroscelidinae, the differences between genera were based on modification involving other bones, mainly mastoids and nasals, as shown by the deformation grids. A cluster analysis confirmed the traditional subdivision in two subfamilies (Rhynchocyoninae and Macroscelidinae) but suggested a different relationship among the recognized genera belonging to Macroscelidinae. Our results are congruent with data obtained from previous biochemical research and support the traditional subdivision in two subfamilies, the monophily of the genus Elephantulus and its closeness with Petrodromus, relating to their similar cranium shapes. The latter presumably is a case of gigantism as adaptation to forest habitats. Further studies on all the species of Elephantulus could provide new evidence for assessing the relationships within this clade, including Macroscelides that by the present analysis appeared as a well-distinguished taxonomic entity. 相似文献

Patterns of daily torpor were measured in response to photoperiod and food restriction at a constant temperature (18 °C)
in two species of elephant shrew (Macroscelidea), Elephantulus rozeti (from Morocco) and Elephantulus myurus (from southern Africa). Body temperature was monitored continuously for ca. 3 months using temperature-sensitive telemeters.
Under short photoperiods (8:16 L:D), both species entered spontaneous torpor on an ad libitum diet, but showed a higher frequency
of induced torpor when food was restricted. Under long photoperiods (16:8 L:D), E. myurus could be induced to enter daily `summer' torpor. A total of 378 torpor bouts were measured, none of which were longer in
duration than 18 h. Under short photoperiods, arousal from torpor was associated with the onset of the photoperiod, whereas
the time of entry was variable throughout the scotophase. However, E. myurus tended to phase shift torpor from the photophase to the scotophase under long photoperiods, despite displaying weak circadian
amplitudes of body temperature indicative of a photophase rest phase. Both species lacked well-defined circadian amplitudes
of body temperature, a pattern thought to be associated with polyphasic activity cycles characteristic of several Elephantulus species. It was concluded that these and other patterns of torpor shown by Elephantulus show similarities with other small Afrotropical insectivores inhabiting semi-arid habitats or unpredictable environments.

Data obtained from quantifying the upper part of the mandibular ramus (the coronoid process, the condylar process, and the notch between them) lead us to conclude that Neanderthals (both European and Middle Eastern) differ more from Homo sapiens (early specimens such as Tabun II, Skhul, and Qafzeh, as well as contemporary populations from as far apart as Alaska and Australia) than the latter differs from Homo erectus. The specialized Neanderthal mandibular ramus morphology emerges as yet another element constituting the derived complex of morphologies of the mandible and face that are unique to Neanderthals. These morphologies provide further support for the contention that Neanderthals do not play a role in modern human biological ancestry, either through \"regional continuity\" or through any other form of anagenetic progression. 相似文献

A new species of sengi, or elephant-shrew, is described. It was discovered in the northern Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania in 2005. Sengis (Order Macroscelidea, super-cohort Afrotheria) include four genera and 15 species of mammals that are endemic to Africa. This discovery is a significant contribution to the systematics of this small order. Based on 49 camera trap images, 40 sightings and five voucher specimens, the new sengi is diurnal and distinguished from the other three species of Rhynchocyon by a grizzled grey face, pale yellow to cream chest and chin, orange-rufous sides, maroon back and jet-black lower rump and thighs. The body weight of the new species is about 700 g, which is 25–50% greater than any other giant sengi. The new Rhynchocyon is only known from two populations that cover about 300 km2 of montane forest. It has an estimated density of 50–80 individuals km−2 . This discovery has important implications for the conservation of the high biodiversity that is found in the forests of the Eastern Arc Mountains. 相似文献

Despite marked improvements in the interpretation of systematic relationships within Eutheria, particular nodes, including Paenungulata (Hyracoidea, Sirenia and Proboscidea), remain ambiguous. The combination of a rapid radiation, a deep divergence and an extensive morphological diversification has resulted in a limited phylogenetic signal confounding resolution within this clade both at the morphological and nucleotide levels. Cross-species chromosome painting was used to delineate regions of homology between Loxodonta africana (2n=56), Procavia capensis (2n=54), Trichechus manatus latirostris (2n=48) and an outgroup taxon, the aardvark (Orycteropus afer, 2n=20). Changes specific to each lineage were identified and although the presence of a minimum of 11 synapomorphies confirmed the monophyly of Paenungulata, no change characterizing intrapaenungulate relationships was evident. The reconstruction of an ancestral paenungulate karyotype and the estimation of rates of chromosomal evolution indicate a reduced rate of genomic repatterning following the paenungulate radiation. In comparison to data available for other mammalian taxa, the paenungulate rate of chromosomal evolution is slow to moderate. As a consequence, the absence of a chromosomal character uniting two paenungulates (at the level of resolution characterized in this study) may be due to a reduced rate of chromosomal change relative to the length of time separating successive divergence events. 相似文献

The endangered golden‐rumped sengi are found only in Arabuko‐Sokoke Forest with 395.4 km2 of forest habitat, and perhaps in a few isolated forest and thicket fragments of total area less than 30 km2 all within central coastal Kenya. Understanding its habitat use is an important requirement to develop better conservation measures for the species and its remaining forest habitat. A more reliable method for monitoring its status is also needed. We used the Bayesian occupancy modelling with camera trap data and habitat mapping to characterise the species habitat use in the Arabuko‐Sokoke Forest. The species uses 328 km2 (95% CI: 289–364 km2) of Arabuko‐Sokoke Forest habitat, and its site use increases with distance from forest edge, with the highest site use in the Cynometra thicket (0.93; 95% CI: 0.82–1). Its use of the mixed forest habitat has been significantly reduced following years of logging of Afzelia quanzensis. We recommend the use of modelled occupancy, interpreted as the proportion of area used by the species, to monitor the species status. Occupancy models account for detection probability, and heterogeneity in site use and detection can be incorporated. Estimated territory sizes can be combined to obtain abundance estimates. 相似文献

Cape rock elephant-shrews, Elephantulus edwardii (Macroscelidea) were found to be pollinators of Hyobanche atropurpurea (Orobanchaceae), a member of a holoparasitic plant genus, lacking up to now any detailed pollinator observations. The elephant-shrews were live-trapped near the plants in the Western Cape of South Africa. One animal was released in a terrarium, containing the plants. It licked nectar with its long and slender tongue while being dusted with pollen and touching the stigmas of the flowers with its nose and the fur above the snout. H. atropurpurea pollen was found in swabs of the fur around noses and snouts as well as in the faeces of captured animals. The occurrence of pollen in the faeces of the elephant-shrews is likely a result of grooming their fur as they visited the flowers without eating or damaging them. This is one of the first records of pollinating, nectar-drinking elephant-shrews, contributing to the very scarce knowledge about the behaviour of those primarily insectivorous animals, as well as small mammal pollination. 相似文献
