In sub-Saharan Africa, tsetse (Glossina spp.) transmit species of Trypanosoma which threaten 45-50 million cattle with trypanosomiasis. These livestock are subject to various herding practices which may affect biting rates on individual cattle and hence the probability of infection. In Zimbabwe, studies were made of the effect of herd size and composition on individual biting rates by capturing tsetse as they approached and departed from groups of one to 12 cattle. Flies were captured using a ring of electrocuting nets and bloodmeals were analysed using DNA markers to identify which individual cattle were bitten. Increasing the size of a herd from one to 12 adults increased the mean number of tsetse visiting the herd four-fold and the mean feeding probability from 54% to 71%; the increased probability with larger herds was probably a result of fewer flies per host, which, in turn, reduced the hosts' defensive behaviour. For adults and juveniles in groups of four to eight cattle, > 89% of bloodmeals were from the adults, even when these comprised just 13% of the herd. For groups comprising two oxen, four cows/heifers and two calves, a grouping that reflects the typical composition of communal herds in Zimbabwe, approximately 80% of bloodmeals were from the oxen. Simple models of entomological inoculation rates suggest that cattle herding practices may reduce individual trypanosomiasis risk by up to 90%. These results have several epidemiological and practical implications. First, the gregarious nature of hosts needs to be considered in estimating entomological inoculation rates. Secondly, heterogeneities in biting rates on different cattle may help to explain why disease prevalence is frequently lower in younger/smaller cattle. Thirdly, the cost and effectiveness of tsetse control using insecticide-treated cattle may be improved by treating older/larger hosts within a herd. In general, the patterns observed with tsetse appear to apply to other genera of cattle-feeding Diptera (Stomoxys, Anopheles, Tabanidae) and thus may be important for the development of strategies for controlling other diseases affecting livestock.  相似文献

Abstract A field study in Zimbabwe of Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. morsitans morsitans Westwood supported Waage's (1981) hypothesis that the striped pattern of zebras may protect them from being bitten by blood-sucking flies. In addition, the results suggest that the orientation of the stripes may be crucially important for the unattractiveness of zebras. The relative attractiveness of five different stationary targets (black, white, grey, vertically-striped and horizontally-striped; stripe width = 5 cm) were each tested on their own and in pairs of all combinations, with artificial host odour (CO2 plus acetone) always present. Electric nets were used to catch flies as they attempted to land on or circle the targets. The results were similar for the two species of tsetse. When tested on their own, grey and vertically-striped targets caught similar numbers of flies and both caught significantly fewer than black or white targets (c. 36% as many). Horizontally-striped targets caught <10% as many flies as any other single target. Although there was no significant difference between the attractiveness of grey and vertically striped targets when they were presented together, when paired with the other targets, grey was as attractive as black or white, but the vertically-striped target was significantly less attractive than black or white (P < 0.001). In other words, a difference between grey and vertical stripes was found only in their attractiveness in relation to other targets. The horizontally-striped target, however, always caught the fewest flies, regardless of whether it was presented alone or alongside another target.  相似文献

In Zimbabwe, studies were made of the effect of host behaviour on the feeding success of Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. morsitans morsitans Westwood (Diptera: Glossinidae) attracted to cattle of different age and sex. The mean feeding rates for male and female G. pallidipes attracted to oxen were 60% and 58%, respectively, compared to 33% and 53% for male and female G. m. morsitans. The feeding rate of G. pallidipes varied between oxen and was inversely correlated with a host's rate of defensive leg movements, which, in turn, was positively correlated with the density of Stomoxys spp. (Diptera: Muscidae) caught in the vicinity of the host. Tsetse were significantly less successful in feeding from young cattle. For G. pallidipes, the feeding rate on calves (<6 months) was 11%, whereas for male and female G. m. morsitans the rates were 12% and 20%, respectively. Significantly lower feeding rates were apparent for cattle aged up to 2 years, when the feeding rate for G. pallidipes (31%) was still significantly less than that on mature oxen (68%). Feeding rates for G. pallidipes on adult female cattle were lower than those on oxen (45% vs. 61%). The lower feeding rates in young animals were attributed to higher rates of defensive movements. The results suggest that higher rates of defensive activities by young cattle reduce the risk of them contracting trypanosomiasis.  相似文献

Abstract. Glossina longipennis were recorded visiting and engorging on cattle in an enclosure and on a single ox in a crush using transparent electrocuting nets in an incomplete ring. Of the total flies caught, 3–6% of males and 5–6% of females in the total catches were engorged (a feeding success rate of up to 16.6% and 12.6%, respectively, depending on assumptions made about the proportion which had an opportunity to feed). Direct observation of tsetse from an observation pit showed 57% landing on the front legs, 13% on the hind legs, and 11 % on the belly of the host. The largest number of bloodmeals was taken from the front legs, although only 14% of landings there terminated in feeding; a higher proportion of the flies alighting on the hind legs and flank succeeded in feeding (28% and 21% respectively). Glossina longipennis were attracted to targets baited with ox odour from an underground pit in a dose-dependent manner. Odour of humans was much less attractive to G.longipennis than that of oxen (for equivalent biomass). Analysis of bloodmeal samples from tsetse caught in two sites on die ranch showed that G.longipennis preferentially feeds on suids, bovids and hippopotamus.  相似文献

Primer sets for five different ungulate loci were used to obtain individual microsatellite DNA profiles for 29 Mashona cattle from a herd in Zimbabwe. There were 3-13 alleles for each locus and, using the entire suite of five loci, each animal within the herd, including closely related individuals, could be unequivocally distinguished. Wild-caught Glossina pallidipes Austen (Diptera: Glossinidae) were fed on specific cattle and the bloodmeal was profiled 0.5-72 h after feeding. The individual specific sources of the bloodmeals, including mixe meals produced by allowing tsetse to feed on two different cattle, were reliabl identified up to 24 h after feeding. The technique was used in field studies of hos selection by G. pallidipes and G. morsitans morsitans Westwood (Diptera Glossinidae) attracted to pairs of cattle. When the pair comprised an adult and a calf, 100% of meals were from the adult. For some pairs of adult cattle, tsetse were biased significantly towards feeding on one animal, whereas for other pairs there was no such bias. In general, feeding was greater on the animal known to have lower rate of host defensive behaviour. Results suggest that relatively slight differences in the inherent defensive behaviour of cattle produce large difference in host-specific feeding rates when the hosts are adjacent. For flies attracted to pair of cattle, < 2% contained blood from both hosts. The DNA profiling technique will be useful in studying the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases of livestock.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. and G. pallidipes Aust. flying around and landing on coloured screens and traps were sampled using electrocuting nets. External colour affected both attractiveness and efficiency of traps, such that yellow and green traps were unattractive and inefficient; black and red, attractive and inefficient; white, moderately attractive, and very efficient; and blue traps, attractive and efficient. The order of attractiveness of coloured screens was similar to that for traps. Landing responses were generally strongest on black surfaces, and weakest on white, but the results for blue were variable. Carbon dioxide and acetone odours improved trap catches and also eliminated most catch differences between traps differently coloured on their outer surfaces. The relative performances of traps coloured differently on inside surfaces only were not affected significantly by these odours, and in all cases black or red target areas inside the trap were required for optimum trap performance. When acetone and 1-octen-3-ol odours were used, catches were improved but the relative performance of differently coloured traps and screens was not changed. There were no obvious species differences in colour responses although numbers of G. morsitans were too low for statistical comparisons.  相似文献

In Zimbabwe, observations were made of the behaviour of individual stable flies (Stomoxys spp.) (Diptera: Muscidae) and tsetse (Glossina spp.) (Diptera: Glossinidae) feeding on cattle during the wet (Stomoxys and tsetse) and dry (tsetse only) seasons. For Stomoxys landing on adult cattle, only 27% took a full meal (mean feeding time = 147 s). Most Stomoxys left the host before completing their meal, largely due to disturbance by the host's defensive behaviour (24%, mean time = 59 s) or other flies (44%, 71 s). The probability of a Stomoxys leaving the host progressively increased with time. Simultaneous observations of tsetse showed that, compared to Stomoxys, their feeding success was lower (15%), feeding was interrupted earlier (33 s) and the time taken to complete a meal was shorter (109 s). Further studies of tsetse across different seasons and hosts showed that feeding success varied according to host age (adult = 7%; calf = 3%) and was negatively correlated with the frequency of host defensive behaviour and the relative abundance of non-biting Diptera. Disturbances were more often caused by host behaviour (69%) than other flies (31%) and the probability of tsetse leaving decreased with time on the host. Overall, these results suggest that tsetse and Stomoxys have different feeding strategies. In particular, tsetse appear to be more responsive to host defensive behaviour, which reduces their feeding success relative to Stomoxys. These behavioural differences are consistent with the respective life-history characteristics of Stomoxys and tsetse.  相似文献

The behaviour of tsetse (mainly Glossina pallidipes Austen) around odour-baited targets, with or without a coating of ox sebum, was recorded in the field using video. The addition of sebum increased the total time a fly was in contact with the target, as well as the time spent flying around and landing on it. When carbon dioxide was released as part of the attractant odour plume, the presence of sebum on the target increased the number of landings made by each fly, but did not significantly affect the duration of each contact. When carbon dioxide was absent from the odour plume, sebum did not affect the number of landings made by flies but the duration of each contact with the target did increase. Evidence for an interactive effect of sebum and carbon dioxide was obtained. In addition, the presence of sebum on the target increased the percentage of landed flies which walked on its surface; such behaviour may represent an 'inspection' of the artificial host. The potential tsetse control application of the current findings are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Studies were conducted in Zimbabwe of the catch of Glossina pallidipes Austen from an electric net plus target baited with mixtures of acetone plus carbon dioxide or 1-octen-3-ol (octenol) plus carbon dioxide. For acetone dispensed alone at 5–50, 000 mg h-1, ten-fold increments in the dose increased the catch 1.7 times. For carbon dioxide dispensed alone, dose increments from 12 to 1201 h-1 doubled the catch, but the catch was not further increased by dispensing carbon dioxide at 600–1200 1 h-1. For mixtures of these two odours, ten-fold increments in the dose of carbon dioxide between 12 and 12, 0001 h-1 increased the catch c . 2.5 times if acetone was also dispensed at >50 mg h-1; changes in the dose of acetone between 50 and 50 000 mg h-1 did not affect the catch. The addition of octenol (0.05 mg h-1) to carbon dioxide (12–12001 h-1) doubled the catch. Ten-fold increments in the dose of octenol between 0.05 and 5 mg h-1 did not increase the catch significantly and the catch was independent of changes in the dose of carbon dioxide between 120 and 12001 h-1. The behavioural basis of the dose-response curves was investigated using an incomplete ring of electric nets to assess the flight orientation of tsetse in different odours. Upwind flight was not elicited by acetone or octenol alone, or by carbon dioxide unless it was at very high doses, however, mixtures of carbon dioxide with acetone or octenol elicited upwind flight. It is suggested that the attractiveness of mixtures of acetone and carbon dioxide is a function of the region of overlap of these two odours at above threshold concentration. Acetone and octenol on their own appear to increase the responsiveness of flies to visual cues.  相似文献

Abstract The visual acuity of two species of tsetse flies, Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. and Glossina pallidipes Aust., was investigated. Male G. morsitans eyes have an acute zone in the forward region, with large hexagonal lenses (mean minimum diameter, D=33, SE±0.7 μm), relatively small interommatidial angle (Δ(φ=1.08o) and angular receptive field of individual ommatidia (Δp) of not less than 1.14o. A narrow band of square lenses, with intermediate diameter and Δφ, merges with smaller hexagonal lenses in the periphery (24±0.7 μm), with relatively large interommatidial angle (Δφ=3.7o) and small angular receptive field (Δp = c. 1.6o). G.pallidipes eyes are similar, except that the lenses in the acute zone are larger than those of G.morsitans , in proportion to their larger body size. Female eyes are not significantly different from male eyes, except that they have a narrower region of binocular overlap (maximum for males = 24o, for females = 18o). The eye parameter (p=DΔφ) in the acute zone of male G.morsitans = 0.62, and in the peripheral zone = 1.56. These relatively high values are consistent with fast flight, visual detection of drift due to low wind speeds, mating chases and discrimination of cryptic host animals at high light intensities. The extended region of binocular overlap in males may serve as an early warning system of the approach of potential females. From our estimates, tsetse flies ought to be able to detect small objects against the sky c. 30 min before sunrise and after sunset, and to use their peripheral vision perhaps 15 min earlier and later than this.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In Zimbabwe, studies were made of the responses of Glossina pallidipes Austen and G.morsitans morsitans Westwood to artificial host odour using an incomplete ring of electrocuting nets. In a plume of synthetic host odour tsetse flew generally upwind, with 50–60% flying within 35o of due upwind. More than 80% of tsetse flew at < 50 cm above ground level. Upon losing contact with odour they executed a reverse turn within about 2 m, and upon regaining contact they turned upwind. There were no clear differences in the responses of G.m.morsitans and G.pallidipes. Using electrocuting nets lying horizontally on the ground it was found that tsetse landed in the vicinity of the odour source, the propensity to land being greater for G.pallidipes than for G.m, morsitans , greater for immature than mature flies, and greater for males than females.  相似文献

Tsetse flies Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides are among the major vectors of sleeping sickness (Human African Trypanosomiasis‐HAT) and nagana (African Animal Trypanosomiasis – AAT) in West Africa. Both riparian species occur sympatrically in gallery forests of south west Burkina Faso, but little is known of their interspecies relationships although different authors think there may be some competition between them. The aim of this study was to check if sympatric species have different strategies when approaching a host. A man placed in a sticky cube (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) and a sticky black‐blue‐black target (1 m × 1 m) were used to capture tsetse along the Comoe river banks in a Latin Square design. The number and the height at which tsetse were caught by each capture method were recorded according to species and sex. Glossina p. gambiensis was more attracted to human bait than to the target, but both species were captured at a significantly higher height on the target compared with the human bait (P < 0.05). No significant difference in heights was found between G. tachinoides and G. p. gambiensis captured on targets (33 and 35 cm, respectively, P > 0.05). However, catches on human bait showed a significant difference in height between G. tachinoides and G. p. gambiensis (22.5 and 30.6 cm, respectively, P < 0.001). This study showed that these sympatric species had different attack behaviours to humans, which is not the case with the target. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. The mode of reproduction of tsetse flies, by adenotrophic viviparity, is unusual among the Diptera and is associated with many unique aspects of the tsetse's mating system. Tsetse exist at relatively low densities in the environment but a combination of olfactory and visual stimuli brings males and virgin females together on or around host animals. The behavioural repertoire associated with mate location and identification, courtship and copulation is regulated by external physical and chemical stimuli as well as by internal physiological mechanisms. With a view to identifying stimuli that could be used to manipulate tsetse behaviour and exploited for control purposes, much progress has been made in recent years in elucidating the mating behaviour of tsetse and its regulatory mechanisms. This progress and the current state of understanding of tsetse mating behaviour is reviewed.  相似文献

The responses of male tsetse Glossina austeni Newstead (Diptera: Glossinidae) towards blue and white sticky legged panels, baited with odour attractants, and towards modified panels were studied in the Jozani forest of Unguja Island, Zanzibar. Increasing the height of the body of a standard panel from 30 to 60 or 90 cm, increased the catch two-fold. Increasing the height of the legs (from 15 to 60 or 120 cm) or raising the device more than 5 cm above the ground reduced the catch significantly. The legs of the panels were the preferred landing sites of the flies, irrespective of the height of the body of the panel. Acetone (300 mg/h) combined with cow urine (60-130 mg/h) significantly increased the catches two- to threefold during the rainy season, but not during the dry season. Acetone had no effect during the dry season and its effect during the rainy season was less consistent. There was no effect of octenol (2.5-12.5 mg/h), used alone or in combination with acetone. Likewise, the catch did not increase through the addition of cow sebum, pig urine (60-860 mg/h), pig urine combined with acetone and octenol. The observed seasonal differences in the response of G. austeni towards odours are discussed in relation to host location strategies.  相似文献

Abstract. In Zimbabwe, high‐resolution (10 Hz to an accuracy of ± 0.1 p.p.m.) measurements were made of atmospheric and host‐produced CO2 in tsetse habitats during the dry season. The diel structure of atmospheric CO2 concentrations is bimodal, with a minimum at approximately 16.00 hours and maxima at approximately 05.00 hours and 20.00 hours, respectively. The background CO2 noise is greater in densely vegetated riverine woodland than in leafless, deciduous (mopane) woodland. Variation in atmospheric CO2 concentrations is correlated with decreasing wind speed and increasing thermal stability. Consequently, the background noise during the day is greatest in riverine woodland during early morning and late afternoon, when winds are typically light and stable, and thermal inversion conditions are developing. Measurements were made of CO2 at 8–64 m downwind from natural (two cattle) or synthetic sources (4–20 L min?1 CO2). The signal from the sources appears as fluctuations above threshold (approximately 355–362 p.p.m.), in the form of intermittent ‘bursts’ of CO2. The strength, duration and intermittency of the signals attributable to these sources declines with source strength and distance from the source. In riverine woodland, approximately 50% of all bursts are 0.1 s long, and 10% are > 2.0 s long. Carbon dioxide signals from equivalent sources are stronger in riverine woodland than mopane. Carbon dioxide dispensed at rates of 4–20 L min?1 is detected up to 64 m downwind of the source but peaks are typically < 10 p.p.m. above threshold. Consequently, host‐CO2 signals are obscured during periods of large fluctuations in atmospheric CO2. These results suggest that CO2 is detectable, at least in some circumstances, at tens of metres downwind and hence dispels the notion that its action is limited to that of a short‐range attractant.  相似文献

Abstract. Marked Glossina pallidipes Austen were released downwind of an odour source in the field in Zimbabwe and the percentage recaptured at the source on the same day was measured.In the absence of odour, 1.3% of the marked tsetse released from a box or refuge were recaptured, independent of the distance between release point and odour source.The distance was varied from 10 to 100 m.When natural ox odour or a blend of carbon dioxide, acetone, octenol and phenols was dispensed, untransformed recapture percentages of box-released tsetse decreased from 18% for tsetse released at 10 m to 2% for tsetse released at 100 m.Recapture percentages were significantly higher than in the absence of odour at all release distances for ox odour and for release distances up to 75 m downwind for the artificial odour.When a combination of acetone, octenol and phenols or carbon dioxide on its own was dispensed, recapture percentages decreased from 6% for tsetse released at 10 m to 0% for tsetse released at 100 m.With these odours, recapture percentages were higher than in the absence of odour when tsetse were released at 20 m from the source, but were lower than recaptures in the presence of ox odour or the artificial mixture with carbon dioxide.Recapture percentages of flies spontaneously leaving refuges were higher than those of box-released tsetse.Proximity of source had no effect on the recapture percentage of refuge-leaving tsetse and host-location efficiency was close to 100% when host odour was detected at 30 m or less.The results are discussed in relation to the host location strategy of tsetse.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Studies were made in Zimbabwe of the propensity of Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. morsitans morsitans Westwood to divert from flying upwind in plumes of host odour to various visual features (termed targets). Using various arrangements of electrocuting nets with targets placed downwind of an odour source it was found that 45% diverted to a square target, c. 30% diverted to a black vertical oblong and there was no significant diversion to a bark-coloured vertical oblong that simulated the bole of a tree. The relative propensity of tsetse to divert to variously coloured targets decreased in the order: black = blue > red > yellow; for different shapes it decreased in the order: circle > square > horizontal oblong = vertical oblong. Changes in the composition or concentration of the odour, or loss of contact with it, did not markedly affect the percentage that diverted. Tsetse that diverted to a target and subsequently flew away from it showed an upwind bias in the presence of odour. In the absence of odour there was a slight crosswind bias. If these crosswind fliers then flew into a plume of host odour they turned c. 50 upwind.  相似文献

Abstract. To test the hypothesis that tsetse flies use visual input from the apparent movement of the ground to assess wind direction while in flight, Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood females were video- recorded in a wind-tunnel as they entered, in cross-wind flight, a broad plume of simulated host odour (C02 at c. 0.05%). The tunnel (2.3 times 1.2 m wide) generated winds up to 0.25 m s-1 and had a strongly patterned floor that could be moved upwind or downwind to increase or decrease the visual input due to wind drift. Flight tracks were analysed for speed, direction relative to the wind, and angle of turn. Mean groundspeeds were c. 1.8 m s-1. In control measurements in still air (with or without odour) flies turned 50:50 'upwind': 'downwind'. With a 0.25 m s-1 odour-perme- ated wind, 79% turned upwind, and c. 70% left view flying upwind. When the floor was moved at 0.25 m s-1 upwind (to mimic the visual input from the ground due to a 0.5 m s_-1 wind), the strength of this response increased. If instead the floor was moved downwind, faster than the wind speed (to mimic the visual input due to a wind from the opposite direction), 59% turned downwind and c. 70% left view flying downwind, and thus away from the source (though progressing 'upwind' in terms of the visual input from apparent ground pattern movement). Upwind turns were on average significantly larger than downwind turns. It is concluded that tsetse navigate up host odour plumes in flight by responding to the visual flow fields due to their movement over the ground (optomotor anemotaxis), even in weak winds blowing at a fraction of their groundspeed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Studies were conducted in Zimbabwe of the responses of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood and Glossina pallidipes Austen resting in a refuge to various host stimuli. Tsetse took off in response to 100% ox odour, 0.08% carbon dioxide or a visual stimulus consisting of a 0.75 × 0.75 m black target placed c . 5 m from the refuge moving at 4o s-1, but the level of response was low with only 35%, 19% and 29% responding, respectively. Tsetse did not take off in response to any one of 25% ox odour, 0.8% carbon dioxide, acetone (3 μg 1-1) or octenol (0.03 μg 1-1). In the absence of any host stimuli, flies emerged from the refuge later on hotter days (35–37oC) than on cooler days (32–34.5oC). Male G.pallidipes emerging later in the afternoon contained significantly more haematin than those emerging relatively earlier. There were no significant differences between the responses of G.m. morsitans and G.pallidipes. It is suggested that the initial activation of resting flies is primarily mediated through endogenous, rather than host, stimuli.  相似文献
