Pigeons were trained to match 2- and 8-s food samples. The delay on training trials was either 0s (group 0sF), 5s (group 5sF), or varied between 2 and 8s (M=5s, group 5sV). Testing at a delay that exceeded the training delay by 15s in each group revealed a robust choose-short effect in each group. The same pigeons then reacquired a previously trained matching task involving 2- and 8-s keylight samples. Different comparison stimuli were used on food-sample and keylight-sample trials. The delay on training trials was the same on both food- and keylight-sample trials. Extended-delay testing revealed a robust choose-short effect in all three groups when the durations were conveyed by food presentations, but only group 0sF revealed a choose-short effect when the durations were conveyed by keylight presentations. Hence, training with a nonzero delay, whether fixed or variable, reduces the choose-short effect with keylight durations but not with food durations. It was concluded that at least some of the psychological processes mediating performance differ as a function of the event that conveys the duration.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained to matching 2- and 8-s keylight samples. The delay on training trials was either 0s (group 0sF), 2s (group 2sF), or varied between 1 and 3s (M=2s, group 2sV). Testing at delays of 10 and 20s revealed a choose-short tendency in all three groups. The magnitude of this tendency was largest in group 0sF and was highly similar in magnitude in groups 2sF and 2sV. In Experiment 2, the training delay remained at 0s in group 0sF and was increased to 5s in group 2sF (now group 5sF). Group 2sV (now group 5sV) received variable training delays ranging from 2 to 8s (M=5s). Testing at a 20-s delay and at a delay that exceeded the training delay by 15s for each group revealed a robust choose-short effect only in group 0sF. Groups 5sF and 5sV both demonstrated a weak and statistically nonsignificant choose-short tendency. When different durations of keylight are employed as samples, training with a nonzero delay, whether fixed or variable, reduces the magnitude of the choose-short effect, with longer training delays producing a greater reduction in the choose-short effect.  相似文献

Previous research has suggested that using stationary and moving levers as nonspatial response alternatives can significantly enhance the speed of acquiring a temporal discrimination in rats. In Experiment 1, rats were trained to discriminate 2 and 8s of magazine light illumination by responding to either a stationary lever or a moving lever with a cue light illuminated above it. Rats learned to discriminate event durations at a high level of accuracy after 25 sessions of training. During subsequent delay tests, rats exhibited a strong choose-long bias, indicating that they were timing from the onset of the magazine light until the entry of levers into the chamber. This occurred regardless of whether intertrial intervals and delay intervals were dark or illuminated. On test trials in which the sample was omitted, rats responded as if the short sample had been presented. In Experiment 2, the rats received extensive training with dark and illuminated variable delay intervals (1-4 s). However, they continued to exhibit a tendency to time from the onset of the magazine light until entry of the levers into the chamber. Although the use of stationary/uncued and moving/cued levers as response alternatives enhanced the speed of acquisition of the event duration discrimination in rats, additional procedural modifications will be necessary to prevent rats from timing during the delay interval.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, pigeons were trained to discriminate between sequences of two and four light flashes (illumination of the feeder). Retention functions obtained with dark delays exhibited a choose-many bias at a 1-s delay and a choose-few bias at delays of 4 and 8s. Retention functions obtained with illuminated delays only displayed a slight choose-few bias. In Experiment 2, additional birds were trained with the same sample sequences. However, the intertrial interval was illuminated by the houselight for Group Light, and it was dark for Group Dark. The acquisition data suggested that multiple temporal features of the light flash sequences controlled choice responding. For both groups, the retention functions were similar to those obtained in Experiment 1. In Experiment 3, baseline training with a 1-s dark delay eliminated the choose-many bias, but a significant choose-few bias at extended dark delays was still observed. Pigeons discriminate light flash sequences by relying on temporal properties of the sequence rather than using an event switch to count flashes. The biased-forgetting effects obtained in these studies appear to be primarily due to confusion between the delay interval and the gap between light flashes.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained to match 2- and 10-s durations of houselight to red and green comparisons. Following acquisition with a 0-s baseline delay, they were tested with delays of 0, 10 and 20 s. There was a strong tendency to choose the short-associated comparison stimulus at both the 10- and 20-s delays (i.e., a choose-short effect) and no bias at the 0-s delay. This test was repeated after baseline training with a constant 10-s delay. As in the first delay test, a choose-short effect was obtained at the 20-s delay. In contrast to the first test, no bias was obtained at the 10-s delay and a strong tendency to choose the long-associated comparison (i.e., a choose-long effect) was obtained at the 0-s delay. Importantly, the choose-long effect was obtained under conditions which insured that the temporal spacing between a 0-s delay trial and the preceding trial was equal to that in training. These results are inconsistent with the temporal summation account of the choose-long effect and are most readily interpreted within a perspective emphasizing the subjective shortening of temporal memories over time.  相似文献

Three appetitive conditioning experiments with rats examined temporal discrimination learning within Pavlovian conditioning trials. In all experiments, the duration of a feature white noise stimulus signaled whether or not a subsequent 10-s target tone would be reinforced. In Experiment 1, the feature durations were 4 and 1 min. For one group of rats (Group 4+/1−), 4 min of noise signaled that the tone would be reinforced and 1 min of noise signaled that the tone would not be reinforced. A second group (Group 1+/4−) was trained with the reverse contingency. The results showed a clear asymmetry in temporal discrimination learning: rats trained with 4+/1− (Long+/Short−) learned the discrimination readily (responding more in the tone on reinforced than on nonreinforced trials), whereas rats trained with 1+/4− (Short+/Long) did not. In Experiment 2, the feature durations were shortened to 60 and 15 s. Due to strong excitatory conditioning of the 15-s feature, the reverse asymmetry was observed, with the Short+/Long− discrimination learned more readily than the Long+/Short− discrimination. However, Experiment 3 demonstrated that the original Long+/Short− advantage could be recovered while using 60− and 15-s feature durations if the excitatory conditioning of the feature was reduced by including nonreinforced feature trials. The results support previous research involving the timing of intertrial intervals and are consistent with the temporal elements hypothesis which holds that the passage of time is encoded as a series of hypothetical stimulus elements.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of continuous and interval training on changes in lactate and ventilatory thresholds during incremental exercise. Seventeen males were assigned to one of three training groups: group 1:55 min continuous exercise at approximately 50% maximum O2 consumption (VO2max); group 2: 35 min continuous exercise at approximately 70% VO2max; and group 3: 10 X 2-min intervals at approximately 105% VO2max interspersed with rest intervals of 2 min. All of the subjects were tested and trained on a cycle ergometer 3 day/wk for 8 wk. Lactate threshold (LT) and ventilatory threshold (VT) (in addition to maximal exercise measures) were determined using a standard incremental exercise test before and after 4 and 8 wk of training. VO2max increased significantly in all groups with no statistically significant differences between the groups. Increases (+/- SE) in LT (ml O2 X min-1) for group 1 (569 +/- 158), group 2 (584 +/- 125), and group 3 (533 +/- 88) were significant (P less than 0.05) and of the same magnitude. VT also increased significantly (P less than 0.05) in each group. However, the increase in VT (ml O2 X min-1) for group 3 (699 +/- 85) was significantly greater (P less than 0.05) than the increases in VT for group 1 (224 +/- 52) and group 2 (404 +/- 85). For group 1, the posttraining increase in LT was significantly greater than the increase in VT (P less than 0.05). We conclude that both continuous and interval training were equally effective in augmenting LT, but interval training was more effective in elevating VT.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Most studies about human responses to mechanical vibrations involve whole-body vibration and vibration applied perpendicularly to the tendon or muscle. The aim of the present study was to verify the effects of mechanical vibration applied in the opposite direction of muscle shortening on maximal isometric strength of the flexor muscles of the elbow due to neural factors. Conventional isometric training with maximal isometric contractions (MVCs) and isometric training with vibrations were compared. Nineteen untrained males, ages 24 +/- 3.28 years, were divided into 2 training groups. Group 1 performed conventional isometric training and group 2 isometric training with mechanical vibrations (frequency of 8 Hz and amplitude of 6 mm). Both groups executed 12 MVCs with a duration of 6 seconds and 2-minute intervals between the repetitions. The subjects trained 3 times per week for 4 weeks. The strength of the group subjected to vibrations increased significantly by 26 +/- 11% (p < 0.05), whereas the strength of the group with conventional isometric training increased only 10 +/- 5% (p < 0.05). These data suggest that training with vibrations applied in the opposite direction of muscle shortening enhances the mechanism of involuntary control of muscle activity and may improve strength in untrained males. Since these findings were in untrained males, further studies with athletes are necessary in order to generalize the results to athletes' training, although it seems that it would be possible.  相似文献

Incompatibility of endurance- and strength-training modes of exercise   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Twenty-two male and female subjects trained for 7 wk for endurance (group E), for strength (group IS), or for both strength and endurance (group C) to evaluate the effect of concurrent performance of both modes of training on the in vivo force-velocity relationship of human muscle and on aerobic power. Endurance training consisted of five 5-min sessions three times a week on cycle ergometer with a work load that approached the subject's peak cycle-ergometer O2 uptake (peak CE VO2). Strength training consisted of two 30-s sets of maximal knee extensions per day performed on an isokinetic dynamometer three times a week at a velocity of 4.19 rad X s-1. Group C performed the same training as groups IS and E, alternating days of strength and endurance training. Subjects (groups C and IS) were tested pre- and posttraining for maximal knee-extension torque at a specific joint angle (0.52 rad below horizontal) for seven specific angular velocities (0, 0.84, 1.68, 2.81, 3.35, 4.19, and 5.03 rad X s-1). Groups C and E were tested for peak CE VO2 pretraining, at 14-day intervals, and posttraining. Group IS showed significant increases in angle-specific maximal torque at velocities up to and including the training speed (4.19 rad X s-1). Group C showed increases (P less than 0.05) at velocities of 0, 0.84, and 1.68 rad X s-1 only. Peak CE VO2, when expressed in relative or absolute terms, increased (P less than 0.05) approximately 18% for both groups E and C.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of an alteration from regular endurance to interval (10-20-30) training on the health profile, muscular adaptations, maximum oxygen uptake (Vo(2max)), and performance of runners was examined. Eighteen moderately trained individuals (6 females and 12 males; Vo(2max): 52.2 ± 1.5 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) (means ± SE) were divided into a high-intensity training (10-20-30; 3 women and 7 men) and a control (CON; 3 women and 5 men) group. For a 7-wk intervention period the 10-20-30 replaced all training sessions with 10-20-30 training consisting of low-, moderate-, and high-speed running (<30%, <60%, and >90% of maximal intensity) for 30, 20, and 10 s, respectively, in three or four 5-min intervals interspersed by 2 min of recovery, reducing training volume by 54% (14.0 ± 0.9 vs. 30.4 ± 2.3 km/wk) while CON continued the normal training. After the intervention period Vo(2max) in 10-20-30 was 4% higher, and performance in a 1,500-m and a 5-km run improved (P < 0.05) by 21 and 48 s, respectively. In 10-20-30, systolic blood pressure was reduced (P < 0.05) by 5 ± 2 mmHg, and total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol was lowered (P < 0.05) by 0.5 ± 0.2 and 0.4 ± 0.1 mmol/l, respectively. No alterations were observed in CON. Muscle membrane proteins and enzyme activity did not change in either of the groups. The present study shows that interval training with short 10-s near-maximal bouts can improve performance and Vo(2max) despite a ~50% reduction in training volume. In addition, the 10-20-30 training regime lowers resting systolic blood pressure and blood cholesterol, suggesting a beneficial effect on the health profile of already trained individuals.  相似文献

We examined if the representation of time intervals in a temporal discrimination task is based not only on their absolute but also on their relative durations. Six pigeons learned two temporal discriminations. In the first, red and green choices were correct following 2-s and 8-s samples, respectively. In the second, vertical and horizontal bar choices were correct following 4-s and 16-s samples, respectively. In a previous study [Zentall, T.R., Weaver, J.E., Clement, T.S., 2004. Pigeons group time intervals according to their relative duration. Psychon. Bull. Rev. 11, 113-117.], tests with 4-s samples and red/green comparisons revealed a bias for red, whereas tests with 8-s samples with vertical/horizontal comparisons revealed a bias for horizontal. These results were interpreted in terms of relative encoding of sample durations. We attempted to replicate this finding but instead of testing with only 4-s or 8-s samples, we tested with several other sample durations to obtain a psychometric function. Results were inconsistent with the relative encoding hypothesis.  相似文献

Cardiovascular and sympathoadrenal responses to stress in swim-trained rats   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Chronic exposure to swim stress (i.e., training) is associated with functional adaptations of the cardiovascular system. On the other hand, repeated exposure to tail shock, an emotional stress, often results in deleterious changes in resting blood pressure and myocardial pathology. We hypothesized that the pathological adaptation following chronic exposure to tail shock was associated with a larger acute physiological response compared with swim stress. Therefore, acute responses to swim and shock stress were compared. A second concern of this study examined the extent to which adaptation to swim training influences responses to predictable tail shock stress. The cardiovascular and sympathoadrenal responses to swim stress, using 1% body wt attached to the tail, were compared with predictable tail shock (0.2-0.4 mA intensity, 1-s duration, 1/min) in two groups of Long-Evans male rats. In the first, 11 rats were studied following 5-7 wk of swim training, consisting of daily 1-h sessions of swimming with 2% body wt attached to their tails. They were compared with an age-matched nontrained (NT) group (n = 8). During swimming, the trained animals showed significantly lower heart rate (387 +/- 10 vs. 449 +/- 18 beats/min) and significantly lower lactate (0.9 +/- 0.09 vs. 2.0 +/- 0.24 mmol/l), epinephrine (332 +/- 57 vs. 739 pg/ml), and corticosterone (32 +/- 10 vs. 62 +/- 9 micrograms/dl) responses. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were elevated in swim stress by the same degree in trained (167/110 mmHg) and NT (177/116 mmHg) rats.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to compare partial range-of-motion versus full range-of-motion training in the development of maximal upper-body strength in women. A 1 repetition maximum bench press was used as the criterion measurement. A 10-week, 2 days per week training regimen was used. Subjects were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 (n = 13) trained with 3 full range-of-motion sets on the bench press. Group 2 (n = 8) trained with 3 partial range-of-motion sets. Group 3 (n = 8), serving as a quasi-control, trained with an equal combination of partial and full range-of-motion sets. Findings indicated that each of the 3 groups experienced an increase in bench-press strength from pre- to posttest. In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between the full range-of-motion group and the partial and mixed groups (p < 0.5). This finding suggests that lifting through a full range of motion was superior to the other training regimens used in this study. However, this investigation also indicated that the partial technique had a positive effect on strength across time within the parameters of this study.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effects of single-set strength training and 3-set strength training during the early phase of adaptation in 18 untrained male subjects (age, 20-30 years). After initial testing, subjects were randomly assigned to either the 3L-1U group (n = 8), which trained 3 sets in leg exercises and 1 set in upper-body exercises, or the 1L-3U group (n = 10), which trained 1 set in leg exercises and 3 sets in upper-body exercises. Testing was conducted at the beginning and at the end of the study and consisted of 2 maximal isometric tests (knee extension and bench press) and 6 maximal dynamic tests (1 repetition maximum [1RM] tests). Subjects trained 3 days per week for 6 weeks. After warm-up, subjects performed 3 leg exercises and 4 upper-body exercises. In both groups, each set consisted of 7 repetitions (reps) with the load supposed to induce muscular failure after the seventh rep (7RM load). After 6 weeks of training, 1RM performance in all training exercises was significantly increased (10-26%, p < 0.01) in both groups. The relative increase in 1RM load in the 3 leg exercises was significantly greater in the 3L-1U group than in the 1L-3U group (21% vs. 14%, p = 0.01). However, the relative increase in 1RM load in the 3 upper-body exercises was similar in the 3L-1U group (16%) and the 1L-3U group (14%). These results show a superior adaptation to 3-set strength training, compared with 1-set strength training, in leg exercises but not in upper-body exercises during the early phase of adaptation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of intense interval training on erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) levels at rest and after maximal exercise. Eight normal men, mean +/- SE = 24.2 +/- 4.3 years, trained 4 days X week-1 for a period of 8 weeks. Each training session consisted of eight maximal 30-s rides on a cycle ergometer, with 4 min active rest between rides . Prior to and after training the subjects performed a maximal 45-s ride on an isokinetic cycle ergometer at 90 rev X min-1 and a graded leg exercise test ( GLET ) to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. Blood samples were obtained from an antecubital vein before, during and after the GLET only. Training elicited significant increases in the amount of work done during the 45-s ride (P less than 0.05), and also in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max: Pre = 4.01 +/- 0.13; Post = 4.29 +/- 0.07 1 X min-1; P less than 0.05) during exercise and total recovery VO2 (Pre = 19.14 +/- 0.09; Post = 21.45 +/- 0.10 1 X 30 min-1; P less than 0.05) after the GLET . After training blood lactate was higher, base excess lower and pH lower during and following the GLET (P less than 0.05 for all variables).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Operant conditioning is often used to train a desired behavior in an animal. The contingency between a specific behavior and a reward is required for successful training. Here, we compared the effectiveness of two different mazes for training turning behaviors in response to directional cues in Sprague-Dawley rats. Forty-three rats were implanted with electrodes into the medial forebrain bundle and the left and right somatosensory cortices for reward and cues. Among them, thirteen rats discriminated between the left and right somatosensory stimulations to obtain rewards. They were trained to learn ipsilateral turning response to the stimulation of the left or right somatosensory cortex in either the T-maze (Group T) or the maze (Group W). Performance was measured by the navigation speed in the mazes. Performances of rats in Group T were enhanced faster than those in Group W. A significant correlation between performances during training and performance in final testing was observed in Group T starting with the fifth training session while such a correlation was not observed in Group W until the tenth training session. The training mazes did not however affect the performances in the final test. These results suggest that a simple maze is better than a complicated maze for training animals to learn directions and direct cortical stimulation can be used as a cue for direction training.  相似文献

The effect of magnesium on thyroid hormones of sedentars and sportsperson in Tae-Kwon-Do, has been investigated in a 4-weeks training program. Group 1 consisted of sedentars receiving 10 mg/kg/day Mg for 4 weeks. Group 2 consisted of subjects receiving magnesium (Mg) supplement and practicing Tae-Kwon-Do for 90-120 min/day, for five days a week. Group 3 consisted of subjects practicing Tae-Kwon-Do but receiving Mg supplements. TSH levels increased with training and Mg supplementation (p<0.05). Mg increased FT3 values. (p<0.05). TT3 values of groups reduced in all groups (p<005). After supplementation, group 1 had higher TT4 values than groups 1 and 3 and the group 2 had higher TT4 values than the third group (p<005). Results of this research show that training until exhaustion causes reduction in thyroid hormone activity in sedentars and sportsperson. It has been established that Mg supplementation however, prevents reduction in thyroid hormone activity in sedentars and sportsperson.  相似文献

This study was performed to assess the effects of short-term, extremely high-intensity intermittent exercise training on the GLUT-4 content of rat skeletal muscle. Three- to four-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats with an initial body weight ranging from 45 to 55 g were used for this study. These rats were randomly assigned to an 8-day period of high-intensity intermittent exercise training (HIT), relatively high-intensity intermittent prolonged exercise training (RHT), or low-intensity prolonged exercise training (LIT). Age-matched sedentary rats were used as a control. In the HIT group, the rats repeated fourteen 20-s swimming bouts with a weight equivalent to 14, 15, and 16% of body weight for the first 2, the next 4, and the last 2 days, respectively. Between exercise bouts, a 10-s pause was allowed. RHT consisted of five 17-min swimming bouts with a 3-min rest between bouts. During the first bout, the rat swam without weight, whereas during the following four bouts, the rat was attached to a weight equivalent to 4 and 5% of its body weight for the first 5 days and the following 3 days, respectively. Rats in the LIT group swam 6 h/day for 8 days in two 3-h bouts separated by 45 min of rest. In the first experiment, the HIT, LIT, and control rats were compared. GLUT-4 content in the epitrochlearis muscle in the HIT and LIT groups after training was significantly higher than that in the control rats by 83 and 91%, respectively. Furthermore, glucose transport activity, stimulated maximally by both insulin (2 mU/ml) (HIT: 48%, LIT: 75%) and contractions (25 10-s tetani) (HIT: 55%, LIT: 69%), was higher in the training groups than in the control rats. However, no significant differences in GLUT-4 content or in maximal glucose transport activity in response to both insulin and contractions were observed between the two training groups. The second experiment demonstrated that GLUT-4 content after HIT did not differ from that after RHT (66% higher in trained rats than in control). In conclusion, the present investigation demonstrated that 8 days of HIT lasting only 280 s elevated both GLUT-4 content and maximal glucose transport activity in rat skeletal muscle to a level similar to that attained after LIT, which has been considered a tool to increase GLUT-4 content maximally.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated whether a heavy strength training program, as an additive to an endurance running program, would cause significant improvements in 3-km run time in a group of recreationally fit women when compared with endurance-only (EO) training. Sixteen women aged between 18 and 27 years of age were randomly assigned to either an EO group (n = 9) or a concurrent strength and endurance (CSE) group (n = 7). A 10-week training program for both groups consisted of an endurance running program performed three afternoons per week. The CSE group also participated in strength training on the morning of each running session. Testing was conducted pre and post training in a 3-km time trial and measured VO2peak, running economy, muscular strength (1 repetition maximum), and body composition and girth. There was a trend (P = 0.07) toward greater improvement in 3-km performance time for the CSE group (106.7 +/- 91.4 seconds) when compared with the EO group (77.3 +/- 93.0 seconds). Further, the CSE group showed an increase in strength levels when compared with the EO group. The CSE group showed significant increases (P 相似文献
