The autotrophic production and heterotrophic consumption of organic matter in the Westerschelde, a highly turbid and eutrophic estuary in the Southwest Netherlands is examined by means of a dynamic simulation model. The model describes the ecologically relevant processes in thirteen spatial compartments and adequately fits most observed data.Three autotrophic processes are included in the model. Net pelagic photosynthetic production is relatively low (average 41 gC m–2 yr–1) and three spatial compartments near the turbidity maximum zone are respiratory sinks of phytoplankton biomass. According to the model, net phytobenthic primary production is more important than pelagic primary production in the upstream half of the Westerschelde. On the scale of the entire estuary, benthic primary production amounts to about 60% of pelagic primary production. Water-column nitrification, which is very important in the nitrogen cycle, is most pronounced near the turbidity zone where it accounts for the major autotrophic fixation of carbon (up to 27 g C m–2 yr–1). Viewed on the scale of the total estuary, however, the process is not very important.Less than 20% of total organic carbon input to the estuary is primary produced, the remainder is imported from waste discharges and from the river. The degree of heterotrophy of the Westerschelde estuary proved to be one of the highest yet reported. On average 380 g carbon per square metre is net lost per year (range 200–1200 gC m–2 yr–1). The yearly community respiration (bacterial mineralization, respiration of higher trophic levels and sedimentation) is 4 to 35 times (estuarine mean of 6) higher than the net production. This degree of heterotrophy is highest near the turbidity maximum and generally decreases from the freshwater to the seaward boundary. About 75% of all carbon losses can be ascribed to pelagic heterotrophic processes; the sediment is only locally important.Mineralisation rates are highest in the turbidity region, but as only a fraction of total carbon resides here, less than 20% of all organic carbon is lost in this part of the estuary. This result is in contradiction with a previous budget of the estuary, based on data of the early seventies, where more than 80% of all carbon was estimated to be lost in the turbidity zone. Part of this discrepancy is probably caused by changes that have occurred in the estuary since that time.Due to the high heterotrophic activity, nearly all imported and in situ produced carbon is lost in the estuary itself and the Westerschelde is an insignificant source of organic matter to the coastal zone. The model estuary acts as a trap for reactive organic matter, both from the land, from the sea or in situ produced. Internal cycling, mainly in the water column, results in the removal of most of the carbon while the more refractory part is exported to the sea.  相似文献

Effects of manipulation of food supply on estuarine meiobenthos   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A comparative mesocosm experiment was carried out to determine the effects of natural foods of different quality and quantity on the structure of natural meiobenthic communities collected in undisturbed sediment from the polluted Westerschelde and the comparatively undisturbed Gironde estuaries. Nematode communities are more diverse and species rich in the latter estuary. The organic matter or foods used were phytoplankton, green alga, salt marsh plant detritus and leaf litter detritus which were added at three dose rates including a high dose. There was no change in community structure in response to the treatments in either of the estuarine meiobenthic communities. Analysis of all the results from this experiment indicate that the food quantity manipulations had almost no effect on the deposit feeding meiofauna. It may be that the reserves of organic matter within the sediment were sufficient to satisfy their dietary requirements for the duration of the experiment. The abundance of diatom/epigrowth feeding nematodes which were initially dominant in the Gironde, declined substantially suggesting that they may have been food limited since diatoms were not among the sources of organic matter added to the mesocosm. There was no specific response to the five different types of organic matter added to the mesocosm  相似文献

Background

Estuaries are highly productive ecosystems that can export organic matter to coastal seas (the ‘outwelling hypothesis’). However the role of this food resource subsidy on coastal ecosystem functioning has not been examined.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We investigated the influence of estuarine primary production as a resource subsidy and the influence of estuaries on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in coastal mollusk-dominated sediment communities. Stable isotope values (δ13C, δ15N) demonstrated that estuarine primary production was exported to the adjacent coast and contributed to secondary production up to 4 km from the estuary mouth. Further, isotope signatures of suspension feeding bivalves on the adjacent coast (Dosinia subrosea) closely mirrored the isotope values of the dominant bivalves inside the estuaries (Austrovenus stutchburyi), indicating utilization of similar organic matter sources. However, the food subsidies varied between estuaries; with estuarine suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) dominant at Tairua estuary, while seagrass and fringing vegetation detritus was proportionately more important at Whangapoua estuary, with lesser contributions of estuarine SPOM. Distance from the estuary mouth and the size and density of large bivalves (Dosinia spp.) had a significant influence on the composition of biological traits in the coastal macrobenthic communities, signaling the potential influence of these spatial subsidies on ecosystem functioning.

Conclusions/Significance

Our study demonstrated that the locations where ecosystem services like productivity are generated are not necessarily where the services are utilized. Further, we identified indirect positive effects of the nutrient subsidies on biodiversity (the estuarine subsidies influenced the bivalves, which in turn affected the diversity and functional trait composition of the coastal sediment macrofaunal communities). These findings highlight the importance of integrative ecosystem-based management that maintains the connectivity of estuarine and coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

Biota and abiotic environment in the Westerschelde estuary   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
An estuary such as the Westerschelde is a highly dynamic environment, both on an ecological time scale where climatic and hydrodynamic forces, mainly the tides, shape a very variable environment and on a geological, evolutionary time scale, since estuaries are young and very unstable habitats.Low species diversity and high adaptability of the resident animal and plant populations are characteristic of estuarine habitats where large fluctuations in submersion, salinity, temperature etc. occur. The existing biota are therefore resilient to environmental stress and effects of the important influx of anorganic and organic pollutants from the river Schelde and its tributaries on the biota in the estuary are not easy to detect.Although water movement and sedimentation patterns in the Westerschelde are relatively well known, there exists little information on important ecological processes such as primary production and heterotrophic metabolism in the estuary.Contribution no. 405 of the Delta Institute, Yerseke.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and potential sources of organic material in the Manko Estuary, Okinawa Island, Japan, were investigated to elucidate the origin of organic matter in suspended particulate matter and the contribution of these inputs to the diet of tilapia. Fatty acid fingerprints of POM revealed that diatoms, bacteria, and possible material input originating from domestic waste discharges contributed a major proportion of the organic matter pool in the estuary. The diet of tilapia is likely influenced by domestic waste-derived organic matter through a POM link. Because of their highly plastic feeding habits, tilapia may develop a feeding strategy of utilizing the most favorable food resources in the ecosystem. Tilapia likely does not prefer mangrove detritus as a food source as indicated by the absence of even-number long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) in their tissues. Instead of mangrove detritus, tilapia preferentially utilized more palatable organic food sources in the water column, such as phytoplankton and its detrital matter. In addition to phytoplankton and bacterioplankton, the other dietary sources that contributed a minor fraction were possible green macroalgal materials and zooplankton.  相似文献

The influence of the biochemical composition of particles originating from surface waters of the Gironde estuary on egg production rates of Eurytemora affinis zooplanktonic population was studied. In the high turbidity zone, suspended particulate matter had a low nutritional quality because the easily available organic fraction represented less than 15% of the overall particulate organic matter. In waters located seaward of the high turbidity zone, a slight increase in nutritional quality was observed. As a result, the sum of easily extractable organic macromolecules represented 15 to 33% of the overall particulate organic matter. The present study suggests that the low egg-production rate of Eurytemora affinis, occurring in the high turbidity zone, results from combined effects of temperature and bad feeding conditions in the area. Low copepod production can be explained by little phytoplankton growth due to light limitation and, therefore, restricted food availability, as well as difficulties in food selection, non-living particle may being dominant.  相似文献

Trophic processes in coastal lagoons are strongly influenced by freshwater inputs and water exchanges with the sea. In recent years, stable isotope analysis has become a widespread and reliable method for the examination of trophic structure over time and space, also in complex ecosystems such as coastal lagoons. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen were studied in primary producers and consumers to identify organic matter source pools from terrestrial, benthic and pelagic environments and to characterise the trophic structure in three Mediterranean coastal lagoons (Lake Fusaro, the Lake of Sabaudia and Stagnone di Marsala). The results highlighted the negligible importance of terrestrial production to higher trophic levels in all the ecosystems investigated. Consumer dependence on benthic and pelagic organic matter showed high variability: overall macroalgae were at the base of the food web in Lake Fusaro and the Lake of Sabaudia, while mixed sources (seagrass detritus, epiphytes, macroalgae and sedimentary organic matter) appeared to be the major baseline food resource in the Stagnone di Marsala. We have found evidence for significant changes in the trophic structure in these Mediterranean coastal lagoons and such differences may be triggered by differential environmental features (e.g. freshwater inputs and hydrodynamic regime). The zooplankton of three european estuaries (Ems, Gironde and Westerschelde) was investigated during spring 1992 by means of samples taken along the salinity gradient. The three estuaries are comparable in terms of total area, flushing time and salinity gradient but differ by their level of eutrophication (highest in the Westerschelde), suspended matter concentration (highest in the Gironde) and potential phytoplankton production (highest in the Ems). Copepods and meroplankton dominated the zooplankton in the three estuaries. The dominant copepod species were Eurytemora affinis and Acartia bifilosa. The distribution of E. affinis along the salinity gradient differed between the estuaries. Peaks of abundance were observed at 0 PSU in the Gironde, 6 PSU in the Ems and 9 PSU in the Westerschelde. The downstream shift of the population in the Westerschelde was likely due to anoxic conditions occurring in the oligohaline zone. In the Gironde the downstream distribution of E. affinis was limited by the very high suspended matter concentration found in the maximum turbidity zone. Whatever the estuary, the parameters of the population of E. affinis and maximum abundance values were similar. However, the influence of the better quality of the available food was suggested in the Ems where individual dry weights and egg production were higher than in the two other estuaries. The influence of a good quality of food in the Ems was confirmed by the development of a large population of Acartia bifilosa (as abundant as E. affinis) and highest values of adult individual weights. The meroplankton (essentially Polychaete and cirripede larvae) was much more developed in the Ems than in the Westerschelde and Gironde. This was likely due to the large extent of mudflats and hard substrates in the Ems favouring adult settlement and hence the number of larvae locally produced.  相似文献

The monthly feeding activity and food habits of populations of Ethmalosa fimbriata occurring in the sea and an estuary in Cape Coast, Ghana district were investigated during a 14-month period. The juvenile fish, whose total length (T.L.) ranged from 5.3 to 14.7 cm, occur in the estuary and appeared to be more active feeders than the marine samples which measured 15.0–30.4 cm. The peak feeding activity in the marine population coincided with the onset of'upwelling' in the sea, which period is characterized by high salinities, decreasing temperatures and high zooplankton production. The species is primarily a plankton feeder. The stomachs of the marine samples contained mainly protozoa, crustacea, molluscan larvae and a considerable amount of detritus while the stomachs of the estuarine fish contained mainly phytoplankton, protozoa, sand grains and organic detritus. These observations have been discussed in relation to other reports on populations occurring along the West African coast.  相似文献

The salt marshes along the Westerschelde estuary have been influenced by various human activities of which reclamation has been a major cause for the loss of salt marsh area. The salinity gradient in the aquatic system is also mirrored in the vegetation of the salt marshes. The role of the salt marshes for the estuary as a whole is manifold but a major importance is their function as a sink for anthropogenic substances. The possible role as a carbon and mineral source for the estuary is discussed in this paper. It is estimated that the total area of salt marsh adds about 8% to the organic matter input in the estuary while the nutrient input may be as high as 25%.Communication nr. 403 of the Delta Institute, Yerseke.  相似文献

The Oosterschelde estuary has a special position among the Dutch North Sea estuaries. With relatively unpolluted water and high transparency it combines high biotic diversity and high primary and secondary production. Before 1970 a major part of the water of the rivers Rhine and Meuse flowed into the Oosterschelde. The building of a permeable storm-surge barrier (1986) decreased the exchange between Oosterschelde and North Sea. The construction of two additional dams (1987) reduced the very limited fresh water discharge on the estuary even further. The total effect of these changes was a decrease of the nutrient levels in the water column. The estuary is used intensively for culture of mussels and fishery of cockles. Both zoobenthos groups use together up to 60% (in the western part) of the organic food available in the Oosterschelde estuary. The storm-surge barrier resulted in reduced current velocities and increased sedimentation, accompanied by higher transparency, hence accelerating primary production. This phenomenon is counteracted by the lowered nutrient concentrations throughout the year.In the seventies a preliminary carbon budget study indicated that a substantial import of organic carbon was required to sustain the ecosystem. Later studies did not confirm this hypothesis. In the present paper three different methods are presented to answer the question, if internal production suffices to sustain the foodweb. At first a steady state model is applied, secondly, calculations with actually measured process rates are carried out and, finally, a dynamic simulation model is used. The conclusion is drawn that, before the construction of the storm-surge barrier, primary production of organic matter by phytoplankton is much more important than import, although the latter can not be neglected as additional food source for mussels, cockles and zooplankton. The simulation model predicts that this conclusion will not have to be changed in the future. The Oosterschelde will remain largely a self-sustaining ecosystem.  相似文献

In Tissawewa, a shallow, eutrophic reservoir in southeastern Sri Lanka, the effect of a major drought on the ecosystem was studied by monitoring the size-structured fish community and its resource base. Primary production was determined as well as the production and diets of ten taxa belonging to four trophic guilds (i.e. herbivorous/detritivorous, benthivorous, zooplanktivorous/insectivorous, piscivorous) that made up more than 98% of the total fish biomass. Two extreme states of the ecosystem were distinguished. Before the drought most primary production was generated byphytoplankton, suspended fine particulate detritus was an important food source and total fish density was high. After the drought the ecosystem was characterised by high macrophyte density, low concentration of suspended detritus and low total fish density. The availability and origin of detritus appeared to be the major factor influencing fish production in Tissawewa. The small pelagic herbivore/detritivore A. melettinus contributed the most biomass and production to the fish community before the drought. After the drought, however, biomass and production dropped considerably. In contrast, the production of the most important species in terms of fisheries yield, the exotic herbivorous/detritivorous tilapias, was hardly affected. Although the composition of their food, benthic detritus, had markedly changed. In Sri Lankan reservoirs a subsidiary fishery for pelagic minor cyprinids was suggested to increase the current yield which is based almost entirely on the exotic tilapia species. The perturbation observed in this study, however, showed that the production of pelagic species was affected particularly by the environmental changes. Exploitation of these species can, therefore, only be considered in combination with hydrological and other management measures that control the environmental conditions of the reservoirs. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Suspended matter in the Scheldt estuary   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Scheldt estuary is characterised by a specific energy pattern resulting from the interaction of wave energy, tidal energy and river energy. It divides the estuary into three parts and governs suspended matter transport and distribution pattern. Observation of suspended matter transport shows the existence of three estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM), a marine-dominated ETM in the lower estuary at the river mouth, a river-dominated ETM in the upper estuary with suspended matter concentration reaching up to 300 mg/l, and the most important tide-dominated ETM in the middle estuary with suspended matter concentrations from several hundred milligrams per litre up to a few grams per litre. Resuspension is the dominant phenomenon in this last ETM due to the tidal related bottom scour, which is initiated when a critical erosion velocity of 0.56 m/s is exceeded. An assessment of residual current along the axis of the estuary shows distinctive pattern between the surface water flow and the near bottom water flow. Also the local morphology of the river, natural or man-made, has a prominent effect on the orientation and strength of the residual currents flowing along either side of the river or river bend. Evaluation of suspended matter concentration in relation to the current flow shows no systematic correlation either because of phenomena as scour lag and settling lag mainly in the middle estuary, or because of the current independency character of uniform-suspension mainly in the upper and lower estuary. Quantification of suspended matter load exhibits a net downstream transport from the upper estuary, a near-equilibrium sustainable status in the middle estuary and a net upstream transport of suspended matter from the lower estuary. The characteristic of suspended matter is induced by and is a function of e.g. tidal phase, spring-neap tide, longitudinal and vertical distribution mechanisms, seasons, short and long terms of anthropogenic influence and/or estuarine maintenance. Suspended matter is dominated by complex and cohesive organo-mineral aggregates. It consists of a variable amount of an inorganic fraction (average of 89%) and an organic fraction and occurs largely as flocs, the size of which is remarkably larger in the upper estuary and smallest within the ETM in the middle estuary. Independent time series measurements (1990–2000) of suspended matter property show an increasing sand fraction, a decreasing organic matter content, a rise in 13C as well as a decrease in water transparency. These independent measurements exhibit coherent consequences of estuarine maintenance operations. Maintenance dredging of the shipping channel and harbours and dumping operation in the Scheldt strengthen marine influence further landward, resulting in a sustained tidal range increment and upstream flow and transport of suspended matter.  相似文献

The effect was determined of organo-mineral detritus (OMD), one of the components of suspended mineral matter in aquatic ecosystems, on the production characteristics of bacterioplankton (bacterial production P b and destruction of organic matter R b, as well as bacterial growth efficiency BGE). The relation was determined between these parameters and the ratio of the content of suspended mineral matter M to the total organic carbon content (M/TOC). More active utilization of organic matter by bacterioplankton in the presence of OMD resulted in its positive effect on specific production characteristics of the phytoplankton.  相似文献

Seasonal monitoring of the meiobenthos in the Dutch estuaries revealed an anomaly in density and diversity of harpacticoid copepods in the Westerschelde.Another Dutch estuary, the Eems Dollard, has comparable hydrodynamical, physical and sedimentological, characteristics and a similar fauna, but even in the severely organically polluted oligohaline mudflats of this estuary, annual average density and diversity of endo-epibenthic harpacticoid communities are higher than at similar less enriched meso- to polyhaline biotopes of the Westerschelde.Besides the concentrations of inorganic pollutants, such as phosphates and nitrates, the concentrations of pesticides, cyanide, detergents, phenoles, oils, polychlorobenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals were compared in both estuaries and compared to suggested permissive levels when available. From this it appears that these pollutants are present in the Westerschelde either in too low concentrations to be considered dangerous or at concentrations comparable to those occurring in the Eems Dollard, except for heavy metals. The load of a.o. Zn, Cu and Pb is distinctly and persistently higher in sediments and suspensions of the Westerschelde than in the Eems Dollard and copper is continuously present in a concentration at which, according to bioassays, egg production and larval development of planktonic copepods are severely affected. The remarkable scarcity of harpacticoid life on nutrient rich mudflats of the Westerschelde is thus probably due to heavy metal pollution.Since no other hardbodied meio- and macrobenthic taxa nor the plankton of this estuary show such a marked impoverishment, benthic harpacticoids prove to be suitable as indicators for the first stages of ecosystem-breakdown in estuarine and coastal zones polluted by trace-metals.  相似文献

Analyses of stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and C:N ratios of food webs within a floodplain and a constricted-channel region of the Ohio River during October 1993 and July 1994 indicate that the increasingly influential flood pulse concept (FPC) does not, for either location, adequately address food web structure for this very large river. Furthermore, results of this study suggest that the riverine productivity model (RPM) is more appropriate than the widely known river continuum concept (RCC) for the constricted region of this river. These␣conclusions are based on stable isotope analyses of potential sources of organic matter (riparian C3 trees, riparian C4 grasses and agricultural crops, submerged macrophytes, benthic filamentous algae, benthic particulate organic matter, and transported organic matter containing detritus and phytoplankton) and various functional feeding groups of invertebrate and fish consumers. The FPC, which stresses the key contribution of organic matter, particularly terrestrial organic matter, originating from the floodplain to riverine food webs, was judged inappropriate for the floodplain region of the Ohio River for hydrodynamic and biotic reasons. The rising limb and peak period of discharge typically occur in November through March when temperatures are low (generally much less than 10°C) and greater than bank-full conditions are relatively unpredictable and short-lived. The major food potentially available to riverine organisms migrating into the floodplain would be decaying vegetation because autotrophic production is temperature and light limited and terrestrial insect production is minimal at that time. It is clear from our data that terrestrial C4 plants contribute little, if anything, to the consumer food web (based on δ13C values), and δ15N values for C3 plants, coarse benthic organic matter, and fine benthic organic matter were too depleted (∼7–12‰ lower than most invertebrate consumer values) for this organic matter to be supporting the food web. The RPM, which emphasizes the primary role of autotrophic production in large rivers, is the most viable of the remaining two ecosystem models for the constricted-channel region of the Ohio based on stable isotope linkage between sources and consumers of organic matter in the food web. The most important form of food web organic matter is apparently transported (suspended) fine (FTOM) and ultra-fine particulate organic matter. We propose that phytoplankton and detritus of an autochthonous origin in the seston would represent a more usable energy source for benthic (bivalve molluscs, hydropsychid caddisflies) and planktonic (microcrustaceans) suspension feeders than the more refractory allochthonous materials derived from upstream processing of terrestrial organic matter. Benthic grazers depend heavily on nonfilamentous benthic algae (based on gut analysis from a separate study), but filamentous benthic algae have no apparent connection to invertebrate consumers (based on δ13C values). Amphipod and crayfish show a strong relationship to aquatic macrophytes (possibly through detrital organic matter rather than living plant tissue). These observations contrast with the prediction of the RCC that food webs in large rivers are based principally on refractory FTOM and dissolved organic matter from upstream inefficiencies in organic-matter processing and the bacteria growing upon these suspended or dissolved detrital compounds. The conclusions drawn here for the Ohio River cannot yet be extended to other floodplain and constricted-channel rivers in temperate and tropical latitudes until more comparable data are available on relatively pristine and moderately regulated rivers. Marine and terrestrial ecosystems are connected via transfers of nutrients and organic matter in river discharges. In coastal seas, such freshwater outflows create prominent turbidity plumes. These plumes are areas of high biological activity in the pelagos, of which zooplankton is a key element. Conceptually, the increased biomass of zooplankton consumers in plumes can be supported by two alternative trophic pathways—consumption of fresh marine phytoplankton production stimulated by riverine nutrients, or direct trophic subsidies through the uptake of terrestrial and estuarine organic matter flushed to sea. The relative importance of these two pathways has not been established previously. Isotopic tracing (carbon and nitrogen) was used to measure the extent of incorporation of marine versus terrestrial matter into mesozooplankton consumers in the plumes off a small estuary in eastern Australia. Replicate zooplankton samples were taken during baseflow conditions with minimal freshwater influence to the sea, and during pulsed discharge events that generated turbidity plumes in coastal waters. Food sources utilized by zooplankton differed among locations and with the strength of freshwater flow. Terrestrial and estuarine carbon only made a sizeable contribution (47%) to the carbon demands of zooplankton in the lower estuary during pulsed freshwater flows. By contrast, in plumes that developed in nearshore marine waters, phytoplankton supplied up to 90% of the dietary carbon of zooplankton feeding in the plumes. Overall, it was “fresh” carbon, fixed by marine phytoplankton, the growth of which became stimulated by fluvial nutrient exports, that dominated energy flows in plume regions. The trophic role of terrestrial and estuarine organic exports was comparatively minor. The trophic dynamics of plankton in small coastal plumes is closely linked to variations in freshwater flow, but this coupling operates mainly through the enhancement of in-situ phytoplankton production rather than cross-boundary transfers of organic matter to marine food webs in the pelagos.  相似文献

During 1975, measurements were made to quantify all sources of input of organic matter in the Dollard. This made a comparison possible between in situ primary production, import from natural sources and organic waste discharges in terms of organic carbon. In order to make a carbon budget, mineralization and the amount of organic matter buried in the sediment was also measured. Input of organic carbon was mainly based on primary production on the tidal flats (measured in situ as O2 production, 9.3×106 kg C · year–1), accumulation of suspended matter originating from the North Sea and the River Ems (maximal 37.1×106 kg C · year–1) and discharge of heavily polluted water (33.0×106 kg C · year–1). Input from primary production in the water phase was negligibly low (0.7×106 kg C · year–1). Loss of organic carbon was due to mineralization in the sediment (measured in situ as oxygen consumption, 18.2×106 kg C · year–1), mineralization in the water phase (using the BOD technique, 7.2×106 kg C · year–1) and burying of organic matter in the sediment (9.9·106 kg C · year–1). The loss of dissolved organic matter to the adjacent Waddensea was not measured but must be considerable. Allochthonous detritus was the main source of energy for the food-webs in the Dollard. The role of bacteria as an important source of food for higher organisms in the Dollard is discussed.  相似文献

The residence time of the water masses in the Westerschelde estuary was determined using a simple compartment-model that simulates the advective-diffusive transport of a conservative dissolved substance (chlorinity). The residence time of a water parcel in the upstream part of the estuary (i.e. the time needed for this water parcel to leave the estuary) varied from about 50 days in winter to about 70 days in summer. The most seaward compartment had residence times of about 10-15 days.Dispersive coefficients that are fixed in time were able to reproduce the observed salinity distributions very well in the Westerschelde. They were obtained by calibration on observed chlorinities. It is argued that the apparent relationship of dispersive coefficients with freshwater flow, which is observed in certain studies, could (partly) reflect the deviation from steady state conditions which are required assumptions to calculate these dispersive coefficients directly from salinity profiles.  相似文献

Resuspension of bottom sediments by wind andtide-driven currents often occur in shallow waters, coastal embayments and estuaries. These processes maylead to dramatic variations in the concentration andorganic richness of suspended particle assemblages.Since resuspended matter is mainly inorganic, decreasing organic contents are usually associatedwith higher seston loads.Under this environmental context the feeding behaviourof bivalves shows a wide degree of plasticity, whichhas been interpreted as having high adaptive value. Inorder to evaluate benefits derived from thisbehaviour, we have used functional relationshipsobtained in previous studies, relating feedingparameters to characteristics of suspended food, topredict the effect that different feeding responseswould have exerted. In cockles, main processesdetermining energy acquisition are feeding rates andpreingestive food selection. Thus, the procedurefollowed in the present work consisted of simulatingrates of food absorption under alternative feedingbehaviours characterised by: (a) no preferentialingestion of filtered organic matter and (b) maintenance ofconstant clearance rates. In theabsence of selection of organic matter at thepreingestive level, ingestion rate of organics (OIR)would decline with increasing seston loads to 30% ofvalues predicted by functions fitted to experimentaldata; difference in absorption rate (AR) would be evengreater, falling to 10%, due to the strong effectthat the organic content of ingested matter exerts onabsorption efficiency. On the other hand, had theclearance rate (CR) kept constant despite theincreasing seston load, OIR and AR would have fallento values respectively 30% and 49% lower than actualvalues. From these results it is concluded that the ability ofsorting particles before ingestion and the capabilityof adjusting clearance rate are key elements in thefeeding behaviour that enable cockles to be welladapted to cope with changes in the water columncaused by resuspension events.  相似文献
